Beer... Deschutes Brewery has partnered with the Deschutes River Conservancy (DRC) to restore one billion gallons of water annually to the Deschutes River. The donation is being made through the DRC’s water leasing program, which pays farmers to lease their irrigation water and legally protect that water instream. The result is increased stream flow and improved water quality in the middle Deschutes River, creating opportunities for life to flourish. This annual one billion gallon donation, which is a long-term commitment by Deschutes Brewery, marks the program’s largest private donation to date. “We’ve always been avid supporters of the DRC
and its mission,” said Michael LaLonde, chief operating officer for Deschutes Brewery and a board member of the DRC. “By creating this new partnership, we are able to give back to the river in a significant way, preserving the lifeblood of the Central Oregon region.” The one billion gallon donation equals 14 times more water than Deschutes Brewery and all of its suppliers use in water per year. To find out more about the Deschutes River Conservancy, check out their website www.deschutesriver.org.

BOASTING ONE OF THE NORTHWEST’S LEADING FERMENTATION SCIENCE PROGRAMS Maybe it’s the water. Or the hops. Or the numerous links people here have to a European ancestry. Whatever the cause, the Pacific Northwest has a reputation as the microbrew capital of the world. Oregon State University has played no small part in building this image, thanks to the hard work and talents of graduates of its fermentation science program in the Department of Food Science and Technology. With one of the nation’s only teaching breweries, OSU offers students the opportunity to develop new brews while they learn subtle chemistry of taste and the innovations of business. Cheers to the Bend Brewfest breweries who count graduates of Oregon State University’s Fermentation Science program within their ranks: Boneyard Beer, Bridgeport, Cascade Lakes, Deschutes, Double Mountain, Fire Mountain, Full Sail, Hopworks Urban, McMenamins, Ninkasi, Pelican Pub, Redhook and Widmer Brothers.
