A MESSAGE FROM

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS The gap between the haves and have-nots in our society has grown tremendously in the last seventeen years that Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon has been in existence. Boys & Girls Clubs always have and always will serve all children, no matter their circumstances and no matter their needs. Through good times and bad, the Clubs continue to be a place that opens the doors to great futures. There are now 23,000 people living at or below the poverty line in Central Oregon. Of the children who attend Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon, many of them are living near that line. Those kids need our help to build a brighter future, and we need you to help open the

doors for the kids who need us most. Poverty’s effect on children is far reaching. Poverty reduces school readiness and academic achievement. Programs like Power Hour and Project Learn at Boys & Girls Clubs turn that problem around. We have the data to prove it. Hunger caused by poverty leads to poor nutrition, low fitness and underachieving students. Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon served over 50,000 meals last year and through programs like Triple Play and Running Club, over 600 kids were out getting exercise. Poverty introduces problems like alcohol abuse, drug use and other

bad choices. Boys & Girls Clubs’ Character & Citizenship programs teach important life skills and improve self esteem so that kids can handle whatever life throws at them. You see, it is really simple. Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon is on the front lines fighting the effects of poverty every day. We can’t eliminate the problem altogether, but we can help these kids fight their way out of that cycle to reach their full potential. Poverty steals hope. We give it back. Donate online or in person today to help us help the kids of Central Oregon who need us the most. Together, we can create a better Central Oregon.

In 2011, we had 1,350 registered members. We also served an additional 128 youths through targeted outreach.

BE THE FUTURE.

KEY ELEMENTS

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS PROGRAMS ARE BUILT AROUND FIVE PRINCIPAL ELEMENTS FOR POSITIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT, ENSURING SUCCESS & GREAT FUTURES.

1. SAFE, POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT: From the moment you walk into one of our Clubs, you will notice our safe facilities, our professional Club staff and the abundance of positive programs. We aim to make each day one where every Club member feels SAFE TO GROW PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY, to trust and to have a chance to truly be themselves.

2. FUN: Our days start and end with fun. Fun is always the first thing we want members to experience when they enter our Clubs. Fun makes everything else seem easy, and it is a guiding force for all of the Club staff and volunteers as IT CREATES A SENSE OF BELONGING FOR MEMBERS. Fun at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon is not an option, it is a requirement!

8

3. SUPPORTIVE RELATIONSHIPS: There is a special bond that happens between Club members and Club staff. These bonds are meaningful and filled with WARMTH, CARING, APPRECIATION, ACCEPTANCE AND GUIDANCE. Club members know when they are at the Club that they will always have someone they can look to for solutions to their problems, big or small.

4. OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPECTATIONS: While at the Club, youth acquire physical, social, technological, artistic and life skills. These skills play a vital part in the great futures ahead and are built upon high expectations set by the Club staff. The opportunities that Club youth are presented throughout high school, college and professional life can often be attributed to the three simple rules at our Clubs: RESPECT CLUB STAFF; RESPECT CLUB MEMBERS; RESPECT CLUB EQUIPMENT.

5. RECOGNITION: Every day, week, month and year, Club members are recognized for their achievements. The positive contributions which our Club members make never go unnoticed and are always praised. Whether it is a simple high five, a YOUTH OF THE MONTH AWARD, or our ultimate honor—a YOUTH OF THE YEAR NOMINATION—our Club staff makes it an integral part of every day to showcase the achievements of our amazing members.

Of our registered members, 40 percent have been with us for two or more years.

9

When compared with non-Boys & Girls Club youths, Project Learn participants increased their overall grade point average by 11 percent; increased their spelling grade point average by 22 percent; and missed 87 percent fewer days in school.

BE ACADEMIC.

10

There is a widening gap in America between millions of youth who graduate from high school and their peers who don’t. THE ACADEMIC SUCCESS PROGRAMS that take place at every Boys & Girls Club in Central Oregon play an increasingly important role in helping youth increase their grades and earn their high school diplomas. Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon is dedicated to doing everything in our power to lift the academic achievement of our children.

By reinforcing and enhancing the knowledge gained from school, PROJECT LEARN uses fun, interactive “high-yield” learning activities at the Club to promote academic success. This includes leisure reading, writing activities, homework assistance and educational games.

Club members become more successful in school by receiving homework help and tutoring every day during POWER HOUR. This program encourages members to become self-directed learners, builds confidence and teaches the importance of long-term dedication to academics.

Want your child to be safe online? NETSMARTZ teaches Club members Internet safety skills through engaging multimedia activities and offline interaction with Club professionals in age-appropriate modules.

In 2011, 522 of our members participated in the Power Hour program, while 202 participated in our Project Learn program.

11

BE A CITIZEN.

12

85 percent of Club alumni say that staff members helped them to know right from wrong. In fact, 77 percent attributed their learning of good leadership skills to Club staff, and 81 percent said that, by participating in the Club, they developed a sense of responsibility to give back to their community.

The ethics of reciprocity is a quality our nation’s young people must not lose. Through service activities, CHARACTER & CITIZENSHIP PROGRAMS at Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon identify community needs, develop programs and activities and encourage kids to actively participate in their community. By creating partnerships with schools, community leaders and parents, and by hiring caring staff, Boys & Girls Clubs are creating a network and culture in which youth embrace the importance of building character and becoming good citizens.

These programs at Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon play an essential role in teaching some of the most important ethics in the world—TO TREAT ALL OTHERS WITH CONSIDERATION.

Our YOUTH OF THE YEAR PROGRAM recognizes service to Club and community, academic performance and contributions to family life. One youth is selected each year locally and receives an $18,500 scholarship.

Leadership and service groups like TORCH CLUB (for youths ages 11-13) and KEYSTONE CLUB (for 14- to 18-year-olds) encourage young people to become leaders through service to their Club and community.

Our SMART MOVES (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) program helps youth resist drug use and premature sexual activity through small-group activities that increase participants’ peer support, enhance their life skills, build their resiliency and strengthen their leadership skills.

In 2011, we recognized 240 members in our Youth of the Month program, sponsored by Subway.

13

BE ACTIVE.

CLUB MEMBERS WHO PARTICIPATE IN HEALTHY LIFESTYLE PROGRAMS AT BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CENTRAL OREGON: • Increased their knowledge of healthy habits, good nutrition and physical fitness; • Increased the number of hours per day participating in physical activities;

14

• Improved their ability to interact positively with all youth and engage in healthy relationships.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES

Obesity is a serious health concern affecting children and adolescents at staggering rates. Today, one-third of American school children are overweight or obese; in 1960, only 4 percent of children were obese. Being healthy means eating well, getting regular exercise and making good lifestyle choices such as staying away from tobacco and drugs. Kids making positive choices today build habits that carry into adulthood. Studies prove that a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE makes a growing mind more alert. Youth gain confidence and self-esteem, both essential traits for successful lives.

HEALTHY HABITS is an upbeat and fun program that encourages kids and their immediate family members to eat healthier. During the summer, we have weekly programs offered by OSU Nutrition Education that help achieve these goals.

The goal of TRIPLE PLAY is to improve the overall health of Club members of all ages by increasing their daily physical activity, teaching them good nutrition and fitness habits and encouraging them to develop healthy relationships.

Give a child a carrot, they’ll eat for a day. Teach them to garden, and they’ll eat healthy for a lifetime. GARDENING CLUB teaches Club members how easy it is to grow healthy fruits and vegetables from scratch, thanks to the help of the experts at Oregon State University. *Gardening Club is only at our Bend and Redmond Clubs.

With the mission “to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.” GIRLS ON THE RUN combines training for a 5K (3.1 miles) running event with healthy living education. Our programs instill self-esteem and strong values through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships and physical training, all of which are accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff and the community.

In 2011, we served 50,916 healthy meals to our members.

15

FACTS ABOUT YOUTH WHO PARTICIPATE IN OUT OF SCHOOL ARTS PROGRAMS LIKE THOSE AT A BOYS & GIRLS CLUB: Four times more likely to have won school-wide attention for their academic achievement Being elected to class office within their schools more than three times as often Four times more likely to participate in a math or science fair Three times more likely to win an award for school attendance Over four times more likely to win an award for writing an essay or poem

BE CREATIVE.

16

As the arts are being eliminated from public education, consequences include the loss of several important developmental skills including critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, higher-order thinking, analysis, evaluation, imagination, cooperation, leadership, literacy, communication, and nimbleness of judgment. The challenges of discipline, reasoning, and problem solving inherent in the arts are especially effective in building self窶田onfidence and self-esteem in young people. The arts offer tremendous opportunities for building resiliency in youth. These rich and inexhaustible resources help young people learn and grow in healthy ways. Research indicates that young people who participate in arts and humanities programs are more likely to stay in school and avoid harmful behaviors.

Through FINE ARTS programming at Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon, members are exposed to a broad range of art education activities and continually encouraged to develop new skills and talents, express themselves, and to expand individual creativity. At the same time, these activities will contribute to improved academic performance.

Every winter, over 100 pieces of art are chosen from within our Clubs to be exhibited at our FINE ARTS EXHIBIT. These pieces are voted on by professionals with art backgrounds and are chosen to move on to a regional and finally the National Fine Arts Exhibit.

Give a Club member a digital camera, and they will see the world through a whole new lens. IMAGE MAKERS brings local photographers and Club members together to teach photography basics from composition to editing. At the end of the program, top shots from the year are shown in a local exhibit.

In 2011, we had 590 members participate in our Fine Arts programs.

17

BE WELL-ROUNDED.

18

Keeping teens on the right path to success, it’s what we do. Imagine an entire year at the Club, including one of the best Summer programs in town, for only $25. Throughout the year, our goal is to provide a safe, positive, and fun environment for our older Club members. Teens who are involved with programs at the Club are engaging in constructive activities that further educational, emotional, and social goals instead of idling in front of the television or the computer. Teen programming runs Monday through Friday with “Teen Night” held every Friday to give teens a safe and fun alternative to begin the weekend. Teens participate in visits to the Athletic Club of Bend, play hide and go-seek in the Club, execute mock trials, hold movie nights with discussion afterwards, and engage in other productive teen-centric activities. In addition, a few of the programs teens can expect to participate in are:

Many young people enter the work force with few of the skills needed to find a suitable job. CAREERLAUNCH encourages Club teens to assess their skills and interests, explore careers, make sound educational decisions and prepare to join our nation’s work force. Club staff will work with teens individually and in small groups to build their job-search skills, and the CareerLaunch website, www.careerlaunch.net, provides teens with options for online career exploration.

There are many early warning signals for youth at risk of dropping out of school, including: attendance, behavior, and failing grades. BE GREAT: GRADUATE is designed to enhance our Club members’ engagement in school by providing consistent support from trusted adults in developing the academic, emotional, and social skills needed to achieve academic success.

Managing financial matters is a key skill for teens to learn as they transition to adulthood. Teens need help in learning how to balance a checkbook, create a budget, save money, and invest for college and retirement. MONEY MATTERS helps teens build their money management skills with practical tips and activities in small groups as well as online at moneymattersmakeitcount.com.

In 2011, our Jr. Staff program employed seven teen members.

Volunteers Making a Difference in the Clubs

TO VOLUNTEER NOW, HEAD TO WWW.BGCCO.ORG AND CLICK ON “GET INVOLVED”

Brandon has been coming to the Club regularly for over a year. He averages about four hours a week working with Kaila, our teen director, and our diverse group of teen members. Brandon’s favorite thing about working with the teens is the chance to be a role model, to mentor, and the resulting self-knowledge that comes with those activities. Brandon is also hoping to move into law enforcement to work with teens in the community, so the experience he is getting at the Club is going to one day translate out into the community where Brandon’s many hours of service at the Club will give him greater empathy and understanding of the way teenage minds work and the things that are important to them. Brandon says that the last year has been a great experience. “Being with these kids just gives me joy,” Brandon says of his time at the Club. Brandon has been a valuable asset to Kaila and to the teens at our Club.

SOME FACTS ABOUT BRANDON: Favorite Movie: Gran Torino Occupation: Studying Criminal Justice @ COCC Army Veteran: Recently returned from an 8 year stint from 2003-2011 Marital Status: Married just recently

In 2011, we benefited from the service of 249 adult volunteers (including board members) and 103 youth volunteers.

COMING TOGETHER TO BUILD FUTURES Redmond’s community can be described by its generosity and its “can do” attitude. When Cascade Childcare Center in Redmond, Oregon closed its operations and donated it assets to Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon the initial response was, “well let’s get to work and find some people to help”! Knowing that the location was ideal for relocation because it was better situated across the street from Obsidian Middle School and very close to MA Lynch Elementary School, the vision for a permanent home began to take hold. The excitement mounted as a master plan hatched and financial support started to snowball. A three-phase master plan for the new facility and property will build a safe, affordable and accessible option for youth development in the Redmond community. PHASE I of the capital campaign was completed in May 2011. With the donation of property and buildings from Cascade Childcare Center, and the subsequent legal, planning and architectural work, this success provides the foundation upon which the balance of the campaign will be built. PHASE II is currently underway. The renovation will ready the facility for use as a safe, nurturing center for the many youth members served by the Club. The Club will be move-in ready by mid-May 2012.

PHASE III, funding for a multi-purpose gymnasium building, will kick off once phase two is complete, with the goal of beginning construction once funding is secured. Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to assist with Phase II during the Make a Difference Day, nationally recognized day of volunteer service, in October 2011. Hours of in-kind labor and supplies were donated to build ramps, stairs, and awnings, and landscaping projects such as building garden beds, irrigation systems, tree planting, and drought tolerant plants and bushes were taken on. In the coming months, with the help of United Way Day of Caring volunteers, we plan to move from our current building to our new location beginning May 2012. Through this volunteer effort, a variety of indoor and outdoor projects will ready us to move in. Just as Phase II has fallen into place, the Redmond community will continue come together “get to work”, and construct a positive place for youth for generations to come.

At all of cour clubs combined, we served 260 members on a daily basis during the school year.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon had four youth members compete at our regional competition, and after hearing from all of the deserving teens, the judges selected Heather Powell as the 2012 Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon Youth of the Year!
