Message from the Editor:
Making connections to change lives by Ben Montgomery / Special Projects Editor Nonprofit organizations boast such a diverse mix of missions that they seemingly rival the human spectrum when it comes to personality, creativity and overall uniqueness. Some charitable organizations are blessed with a level of support and know-how that allows them to cast safety nets that are both familiar and extensive. Other, often smaller organizations exist to fill a single niche, one that is sometimes so fine that it barely (if ever) registers as a point of concern throughout our daily lives. And yet these smaller niches can’t be ignored. Often the work of organizations that seem to fly under the radar fulfills needs that touch people in the most personal of ways, providing services that are as beneficial as they are delicately human. Dolls 4 Alzheimer’s, a local organization, is a great example of this. While many of the larger, nationwide organizations dealing with Alzheimer’s disease focus on the bigger picture — study, prevention, treatment and perhaps a

cure — Dolls 4 Alzheimer’s mission focuses on a single thing: the comfort of late-stage Alzheimer’s sufferers. They do this by providing them with life-like dolls. According to its website, “it has been proven time and again” that life-like dolls provided to women and men with Alzheimer’s offer comfort, contentment and even joy to their lives. There may be a study out there that explains this effect, but that’s of little importance to Dolls 4 Alzheimer’s leaders who, on their website, would rather share testimonials and emotional words of thanks than scientific theory. And yet most of us could quickly to develop a theory or two as to where an effect like this might derive. Perhaps Alzheimer’s suffers crave simple companionship, or maybe the dolls take them back to a happier time in their lives. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s simply our nature as humans to nurture others — to extend a hand, offer our compassion and make a connection. Such connections can give meaning to our lives, providing us with experiences of happiness, fulfillment and contentment. It’s why we care for others, why we
give of ourselves, and why we volunteer our time for causes we care about. It’s also why a simple doll can give comfort to a dementia sufferer who, while she may no longer understand the world around her, still finds joy through the nurturing of another. With enough focus, drive, passion and support, such seemingly insignificant connections can wield the power to change a life, a community … maybe even the world. It’s appropriate, then, that we’ve chosen to call this publication Connections. Our annual booklet listing and highlighting hundreds of Central Oregon nonprofit organizations, Connections exists as a way to empower our readers with knowledge about area programs that enrich lives. Please consider using this booklet as a resource for giving in 2012. Whether you plan to donate time, money or other resources, the following pages will help you channel your resources toward causes that most reflect your interests and value system. You may find that making such a connection leads to a happy, fulfilling and more purposeful 2012.
Foundation of the Economy Central Oregon nonprofits being relied on as safety nets as well as economic developers. by Kathy Oxborrow, for The Bulletin Special Projects
Like all sectors of our economy, nonprofit organizations continue to face uncertainty and look for ways to tighten their belts while trying to create new sources of income. “In past recessions, we thought the economy would rebound and we’d go back to business as usual after a few years,” said Doug Stamm, the CEO of Meyer Memorial Trust, the foundation created by the Fred G. Meyer estate that annually grants millions of dollars in Oregon and Clark County, Washington. Stamm doesn’t think that is the case now. He believes the current economic climate is the “new normal.” In response to this “new normal” — the realization that they will have to continue to do more with less — nonprofit organizations are hunkering down and looking for ways to deliver services more effectively. “The nonprofit organizations I work with recognize they have to be questioning the status quo in everything they do,” said Adrienne Graham, a nonprofit consultant and owner of Leapfrog Training & Facilitation. Ken Wilhelm, the executive director of United Way of Deschutes County, is worried that smaller, less glamorous organizations won’t

Nonprofit organizations that receive government funding have also weathered the recession a little better, although that support is waning because government revenue is declining. NeighborImpact, a large nonprofit organization based in Redmond, has not had to cut back on services mainly because it still has federal government stimulus money. “With that funding going away, we are looking at how we will fill those gaps,” said Sharon Miller, NeighborImpact’s executive director. survive. He said some have done all they can to reduce costs. “They’ve burned through their reserves, leaned into fundraising, and it hasn’t been enough,” he said. Organizations that are able to charge for some of their services are doing better. For example, the Tower Theatre, in addition to ticket sales from performances, rents out its facility. “Rental of the Theatre got us through the darkest days of the recession,” said Ray Solley, Tower Theatre’s executive director.

business services they can generate income to continue providing basic services. One of the trends from last year’s analysis of the state of nonprofits found that collaboration had increased among the groups. Nonprofit leaders were talking to each other more and pooling resources to sponsor fundraising events. That trend has continued and extended to some unusual partnerships and ventures.
Economic Development
Recognizing that until the economy improves and the job market rebounds, nonprofit organizations will continue to struggle, the philanthropic community is examining ways it can help economic development and job creation efforts. Scott Cooper, executive director of The Partnership to End Poverty, said this is new territory for foundations because, by nature, they don’t like taking risks. Small business ventures, in contrast, involve risks. “Where I have seen success in foundation engagement with the business community is through the wise use of intermediary organizations like Eco-

nomic Development of Central Oregon (EDCO),” he said. The Oregon Community Foundation (OCF), one of the largest foundations in Oregon, recently contributed to VentureBox, a project established to create jobs in Bend. VentureBox is the brainstorm of EDCO and the Tech Alliance of Central Oregon. Its goal is to mentor entrepreneurs and get them “investment ready.” It’s kind of a boot camp for promising new businesses. “The response has been absolutely phenomenal,” said Jim Boeddeker,
Nonprofit Impact on Oregon’s Quality of Life Based on the sheer numbers representing the scope of nonprofits in Oregon, it should come as no surprise that they significantly impact the quality of life throughout the state. According to the Nonprofit Association of Oregon, “Nonprofits also offer meaningful avenues for civil engagement through volunteerism. Over 33 percent of all Oregonians volunteer, one of the highest rates of volunteerism in the U.S.” Nonprofit organizations also rate favorably in the minds of Oregonians. In a Davis Hibbitts 2005 public opinion poll of more than 1,700 Oregonians: • 70 percent said nonprofits play an important role in making their communities better places to live. • 70 percent said they or a member of their household participated in or was helped by a nonprofit organization in the past two years. • 79 percent said their involvement with nonprofits improved their lives. executive director of VentureBox. “It’s almost like there’s been pent up demand for this idea.” Funding this kind of a project is new for OCF, but Roger Lee, EDCO’s executive director, said that foundations have realized that jobs and the economy are the foundation for everything else. Melissa Durham, the director of strategic projects for OCF, agrees. “It’s a way to focus the work of the foundation in thinking about what we need to do to help Oregon become a healthy, thriving, family state,” she said. Meyer Memorial Trust is also contributing its resources to economic development. It has a full-time fellow, Kipp Baratoff, who is developing an economic tool and piloting it in the Hood River area. “The trustees are taking a comprehensive look at how they can contribute to a thriving economy where basic services are met,” said Baratoff.
Getting Social volunteeringinamerica.gov
Another new trend this year is the increased use of social media by nonprofit organizations.
United Way’s Wilhelm said he thinks organizations that have excelled at getting their message out using social media are doing better than those who haven’t been able to tell their story through that medium. “Facebook is a way to acknowledge donations that has been very effective for us,” said Holly Remer, Healthy Beginnings’ executive director. “It’s been an excellent way to build relationships.” The Deschutes Land Trust has a presence on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr. “The value we see in social media, outside of being able to tell our story more visually, is in the measurable data and interaction with our supporters,” said Karyn Verzwyvelt, outreach associate at Deschutes Land Trust. In the coming years, Central Oregon will continue to rely on nonprofit organizations because they provide essential services and are part of the social fabric of our community. They, like the for-profit sector, will survive by adapting to the “new normal.”

by Linda Orcelletto, for The Bulletin Special Projects Research shows that volunteering keeps us happier, healthier and more connected with our communities. And volunteering has proven to be the backbone of our society. “It’s human nature to want to give of ourselves,” said Betsy Warriner, executive director for Volunteer Connect of Bend. “When you volunteer, you are serving others as well as yourself.” According to www.volunteeringinamerica.gov, a site of the Federal government that quantifies the outreach of volunteerism in our country, the year 2010 saw 62.8 million adults volunteer their time to a variety of causes. It’s estimated these volunteers gave a total 8.1 billion hours of their time during that calendar year. Also according to the site, Oregon ranks 14th among the 50 states in the percentage of its residents which volunteer (32.9 percent), which accounts for a commulative total of 115.9 million hours of service. If you’re one of the two-thirds remaining who is new to volunteering, below are a few tips for making your experience a positive one for both you and the organization for which you choose to serve.
Making the Match
To make the best match, and make the experience positive for everyone, both the prospective volunteer and organization should be aware of the following: PASSION AND MOTIVATION. Know what drives you. If you love kids, volunteering for an organization working with animals isn’t a good fit. SPECIFIC SKILLS AND EXPERTISE. Only you know the answer. Tell the volunteer coordinator. TIME COMMITMENT. Know how much time you have to give and how much the task requires. SUPERVISION. Determine if you work best alone or with a supervisor. Learn how to effectively communicate with the supervisor. TRAINING. Specialized work may require training or education. Find out what is required. Know the expectations, yet set boundaries. PHYSICAL ABILITY. If a certain capability is required or if there are limitations, be clear.
Giving Your Best
“A positive attitude is important when volunteering,” said Taffy Gleason, executive director for Bend’s Community Center. “Not all volunteer jobs are glamorous, but all are equally important and critical to the organization.” Both Gleason and Warriner agree that volunteering needs to be fun and rewarding. Here are suggestions on how to be a good volunteer: TREAT VOLUNTEERING AS A JOB. Be on time, not too early since they may not be ready. If you are unable to volunteer or will be late, call.
volunteeringinamerica.gov
LISTEN AND LEARN. Be respectful of other viewpoints. Don’t feel as though you can change the world without first being aware of the issues. SHOW INITIATIVE. If you notice something can be done more efficiently, offer positive suggestions. Make sure to ask first; there may be particular reason for doing so. IF IT TAKES A WHILE FOR AN ORGANIZATION TO CALL YOU BACK, DON’T GIVE UP. Now might be the time to offer your services as a volunteer coordinator. IF YOU WANT TO BRING OTHERS, GET PERMISSION. There may not be enough to do, which can lead to disappointment. IF YOU HAVE SMALL CHILDREN, ask if you are able to volunteer from home. “Volunteering is as easy as finding something you want to accomplish, whether it is a one-time event or ongoing,” said Warriner. “Then, find a friend to join you.” The Bulletin | 9
Seeking Help? Central Oregon 2-1-1 is your best resource for finding assistance. by Robert Springer, for The Bulletin Special Projects
Central Oregonians have one, easy to remember phone number and website to call or visit when they need non-emergency social services: 2-1-1 and www.co211.info. Calling 2-1-1 from Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook counties will put the caller in touch with a professional trained to provide a referral to an appropriate social service agency. Phone lines are staffed Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., while the website is always available for searching. “There are myriad private and government programs and services that people use,” said Ken Wilhelm, executive director of the United Way of Deschutes County, the lead partner in Central Oregon 2-1-1. “It can be overwhelming to figure out how to get to the right agency, to get what you’re looking for, even what programs exist, especially if you’re new to looking for them. “2-1-1 makes it easy to get to the right place at

of un-met needs, especially in the areas of housing and health care.” “2-1-1 operators are trained to help out with problem solving when there is no resource for the caller,” he said. “Let’s say the person has been evicted and we can’t get them rent, we’ll tell them where the shelters are. If they don’t want to go to a shelter, we ask them if they have family or a friend to stay with. We always try to help.” The service, a partnership between the United Way and the Central Oregon Family Resource Center, has been in existence since the spring of 2009. Volunteer Connection
by Robert Springer, for The Bulletin Special Projects
Finding a volunteer or seeking out a volunteer oportunity continues to remain more seemless than in the past thanks to the efforts of Volunteer Connect, a nonprofit organization in Central Oregon. Its website, volunteerconnectnow.org, aims to make finding a volunteer or a volunteering opportunity simple for those exploring options for giving back to their communities. “We’re a resource for volunteers and community agencies; we help make the connections,” said Betsy Warriner, Volunteer Connect’s executive director. “We help people who are looking for new ideas, people who already volunteer but are looking for new ways to connect with the community, and those new to the area. “We also help students find opportunities.” Find an opportunity by visiting volunteerconnect10 | Connections 2012
the right time. Help lines have been around for awhile; this organizes them into one easy-touse-and-remember phone number.” The service is anonymous, but the 2-1-1 operator will ask for demographic information. If reached after hours, 2-1-1 callers will get a recording listing some non-emergency alternatives (for mental health services, for example) with the option to leave a message. The CO211.info site is almost as easy to use as calling the service. Click on “Get Help,” enter your zip code or select the nearest city from the dropdown menu, and choose a category. The results will be displayed. Quick and simple is what the creators of 2-1-1 had in mind. The most frequent requests are for assistance with housing, utilities, food and health care. 21-1 employees work hard to ensure that the referral is appropriate and effective so the caller isn’t sent on the proverbial wild goose chase trying to obtain assistance. Still, Wilhelm said that there is a “fair amount

A recent visit showed dozens of volunteer opportunities ranging from helping kids with after-school homework to a program volunteer for adaptive aquatics. Once they’ve found the right opportunity, wouldbe volunteers can contact the organization directly. Volunteers can connect to opportunities on the site with or without registering with Volunteer Connect. The organization encourages registration (it takes less than five minutes) as it allows a volunteer to keep track of his or her preferences, create saved searches and receive occasional volunteering updates. Volunteer Connect is not just for volunteers, Warriner said. After registering online or calling Volunteer Connect, organizations interested in finding volunteers can begin asking for help once they are approved and have paid the nominal annual fee. Warriner said that Volunteer Connect has achieved
its mission. Volunteer Connect has facilitated more than 2,000 connections betweens volunteers and community agency opportunities online. Today, users registered on volunteerconnectnow. org total 725 individuals, an increase of 333 from last year. More than 650 individuals have inquired about volunteer opportunities at 106 different nonprofit and public agencies, according to representatives at Volunteer Connect. Currently, Volunteer Connect has more than 200 different volunteer opportunities listed on its website. Volunteer Connect is funded by individual donations, grants, business sponsorships and the small fees they charge agencies. Last Easter morning a fire broke out in Lisa Choate’s fifth wheel trailer at the Whispering Pines RV park in La Pine. Lisa and her family were sleeping when one of her children noticed the fire and woke the rest of the family. Neighbor’s quickly called 911. While the family was lucky to be alive, they lost most of their possessions. “I am very proud of our response to the fire in La Pine last Easter,” says Tom Farley, executive director of the Oregon Mountain River Chapter (OMRC) of the Red Cross. “Our volunteers responded to help the victims who were basically standing out in the cold on an Easter Sunday.” Because Central Oregon communities are surrounded by forests that could go up in a blaze, rivers that may flood and potentially erupting volcanos, the region needs to be prepared. According to their website, the Oregon
Mountain River Chapter responded to 114 local disasters last year. The responses ranged from support with family fires, like the one in La Pine, to helping with the evacuation of communities threatened by wildfire, such as Warm Springs this summer. Founded in the early 1860s, the International Committee of the Red Cross began as a relief organization to bring aid to the war-injured. Twenty years later, Clara Barton established the American Red Cross and shortly thereafter provided its first disaster relief to forest fire victims in Michigan. Although the Red Cross is an international organization, each local chapter operates as a separate entity. Central Oregon’s chapter, the Oregon Mountain River Chapter, was established in 1917. “While each Red Cross chapter is separate, the five Oregon chapters work together to make one Red Cross,” said Farley. “We share some administrative and operational duties to perform them more efficiently.” The Bulletin | 13
With a small paid staff of four, the OMRC relies on its list of approximately 200 volunteers to provide service to Central Oregonians. “Our biggest challenge is trying to continue the same level of service and response with the dwindling funds available,” mentions Farley. One important function of the Oregon Mountain River Chapter is to provide training to over 7000 people annually in personal and family safety classes. The OMRC can, “assess each business in terms of their own readiness for disasters.” “We also provide a confidential self-assessment on our website that covers all businesses, large and small,” Farley said. The OMRC is also active in preparing youths for life’s challenges, from caring for other people to disaster response. “We have a very active program with the boy and girl scouts,” says
Farley. “A natural synergy exists with a goal of preparedness.” According to Farley, the OMRC offers babysitting classes and has visited high school health classes to discuss preparing and responding to disasters. The Red Cross maintains a close relationship with local government agencies, according to Farley. “That way, if something were to occur, the people working together to offer support would be familiar with each other,” he said. “... we work closely with first responders. Where the fire department may suggest clearing brush to prevent fires, we talk about emergency kits.” Because the Red Cross is volunteer-driven and not a government agency, they rely on the support of the communities they serve. The Oregon Mountain River Chapter of the Red Cross accepts donations in the form of volunteer hours,

money and blood. “As the saying goes, ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.’ It takes a donor 45 minutes to give blood. But, it takes the red cross weeks of preparation,” Farley said. The OMRC organizes multiple
blood drives annually in Central Oregon, including the recent Civil War Blood drive at the Red Cross on Twin Knolls Drive. For more information about the Oregon Mountain River Chapter of the Red Cross, visit www. mountainriver.redcross.or.

Building homes and futures First Story inspiring communities through the creation of homeownership opportunities. by Bridget McGinn, for The Bulletin Special Projects
For years, Cathi Rupp and her two children, Kaleb, 14 and Ashley, 10, lived in low-income housing while she went back to school, hoping for a better future. Rupp steadily added to a savings account for a down payment on a home, participated in a homeownership class, earned her degree and found a stable, fulfilling job as a dental assistant. On the path toward realizing her dream of home ownership, she was devastated when her loan application was denied due to a high debtto-income ratio as a result of her school loans. “I felt totally defeated,” said Rupp. “And a failure as a mom.” Facing a $500 increase in her monthly rent and the prospect of moving her family back into her parent’s home, Rupp had nowhere to turn. And then, like a miracle, she learned of First Story. Created in 1998 as a way for Hayden Homes employees to give back to the community and originally known as The Hayden Giving Fund,
the nonprofit organization changed its name to First Story in 2010 to better reflect its mission to promote giving. Their goal is to inspire communities through the creation of home ownership opportunities and financial support. “First Story is all about celebrating ‘firsts,’” said First Story Development Director Claire Duncan. “First step towards a stronger future; first chance at home ownership; first-time home buyers; and first step in attaining the American Dream.” With a simple vision —to change lives — the organization serves communities in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Since its inception, their Housing Grant Program has served 41 families, 125 children and more than 100 at-risk young adults. Additionally, the organization’s Community Giving Grant Program has awarded nearly half a million dollars to support organizations dedicated to creating opportunities for low-income families, youths and persons in need. “First Story targets hardworking, educated, deserving families that are ready to become homeThe Bulletin | 17
owners but have not had the opportunity up to this point,” said First Story founder and Hayden Homes CEO Hayden Watson. “Our experience with the families at First Story is that a home still means a lot and is a lifelong dream which most believe [is] impossible to achieve.” Not giving up on her own dream of home ownership, Rupp seized the opportunity to apply to the First Story Housing Grant Program. An avid scrapbooker, she and her children created a creative scrapbookthemed application which illustrated just how much a home of their own would mean. Rupp’s application was reviewed by a selection committee to determine if she met the three basic requirements of the program: an income below 80 percent of area median income; the ability to pay a monthly, no-interest mortgage payment; and status as a current community member with intentions to stay in the area. The day following her family’s interview, Rupp received a call informing her that she had been se-
lected by First Story to participate in the Housing Grant Program. “I was at work,” said Rupp. “And I just started crying and everyone else did too. They had been praying with me for this to happen, and it was just amazing.” Providing the opportunity for individuals to have similar experiences is what drives Watson and other members of First Story’s board of directors and staff. “We want to change lives and create wealth in the community,” said Watson. “Additionally, we believe First Story is providing a conduit for the community to give. Employees at Hayden Homes, trade partners and suppliers that we work with as well as many private individuals tell us that they are thankful for the opportunity to give.” Watson takes special pride in the fact that corporate partnerships, charitable fees attached to every home that Hayden Homes builds, an endowment and the principalonly payments that First Story receives from homeowners all serve to create sustainable funding for the

organization, a rare feat. “We pride ourselves on being a locally funded nonprofit, with minimal bureaucracy,” said Watson. “First Story has learned a lot about creating local partnerships to stretch our fundraising to build more homes for deserving families.” Rupp is grateful to First Story for giving her the opportunity to make her dream of home ownership come true. And she and her children are working on a special scrap-
book about life in their new home to share with the staff at First Story. “First Story is truly an organization that is all about helping people,” Rupp said. “It is a nonprofit that doesn’t get anything out of it except being able to give this amazing gift — a home — and change people’s lives.” To contribute to First Story or to access the First Story homeowner application or community giving grant application visit www.firststory.org.

Creating opportunities

by Laurel Brauns, for The Bulletin’s Special Projects
Icon City is serving the homeless youths of Bend in a radical new way. Once a week, co-founders Lonnie Chapin and Tim Bach send out a text to more than 700 volunteers in Central Oregon. Hours later, items like socks, jackets, sleeping bags and tents arrive at Icon City headquarters, articles that were specifically requested by homeless kids in Bend. Chapin and Bach are two successful Christian music artists who moved here two years ago to start the next chapter in their lives. Their mission was to channel the community’s desire to help people into practical and actionable opportunities. Some of their volunteers work at an outdoor food kitchen every week; others choose to help without making direct contact with the kids, by doing things like donating new socks or shoes. Both musicians speak of the great fortune they were given in life as successful touring art-
ists, as well as the sense of obligation they have to give back. “I was just a punk kid from Bend who got to see a lot of things,” said Chapin. “Where much has been given, much is required.” Chapin grew up as the son of a pastor. His family moved to Nashville, where Chapin eventually became the bassist for the Christian metal band, Petra. He toured the world playing stadium concerts and winning Grammy Awards. Icon City co-founder, Tim Bach, was a soughtafter Nashville session musician — a wellknown keyboardist and songwriter in his own right — and the two often collaborated on projects together. But Bach’s upbringing carries different and sad refrain. As a teenager, he lived out of a truck, scraping by with a job he had working for a baseball team. He left home because his mother’s boyfriend was violent, and he could not stand to watch his family suffer and live in fear. “When I came to Bend and saw all these The Bulletin | 23
homeless kids hanging out in the circle (by Riverfront Plaza), I could relate to them, and I saw that helping them was a real need in this community,” Bach said. Chapin said he has seen the population of homeless youths in Bend explode in the years since the economy took a turn for the worst. There are now more than 1,000 homeless kids in Bend under the age of 18. “A lot of parents were putting hope in the money they made, and when they lost their jobs, the financial strain created an epidemic in the family that a lot of these kids couldn’t handle, so they left home,” Chapin said. “The increase is directly related to families torn apart by economic factors.” Chapin and Bach’s vision was not just to start another nonprofit organization; they wanted to take both a pragmatic and progressive approach by avoiding some of the overhead costs associated with office space and paid staff. The only paid employee is a bookkeeper, and the organization is run entirely by volunteers.
Icon City created a tool called BeRemedy, a system that connects people: the volunteers in the Central Oregon community that want to help, and the homeless youths who need their assistance. While their weekly texts bring in jackets and sleeping bags, they also establish a temporary headquarters every Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Riverfront Plaza to provide a warm meal and toiletry items like toothbrushes and soap. As Bach and Chapin got to know some of the kids they serve, they were able to ask them directly what they needed. Many continually requested a hot shower. Icon City went to work transforming an old delivery truck into a portable shower house with three stalls and changing rooms. The truck is also part of the Sunday meal program. “Some of these kids literally come out of the woods on Sundays,” said Bach. “For a few hours, we transform the park into a safe place with people they can trust.” “A meal, a hot shower and a new coat might be just the things a kid

United by a love for dance Bend Dance Project provides a venue for all levels of dancers to choreograph and perform. by Susan Thomas Springer, for The Bulletin Special Projects
Marilyn Wurster remembers her first ballet class at age 5. She’s been dancing ever since, branching out to tap and her current favorite, zumba. Today, she’s an active volunteer in a dance collective which brings a variety of dance styles and ages together with the mission of sharing their art form with the community. “I like being a part of the group and entertaining people,” Wurster said. “Dancing is a ball — I just love it.” This passion for dance was the basis around which Bend Dance Project was formed in 2006. The leaders are united by their collective love of dance, their enjoyment of the mental challenge of choreographing new dances, and their interest in using dance performance to benefit charitable and educational causes. This nonprofit organization is home to three dance groups: Jazz Dance Collective led by artis-
tic director Gail Bartley, Ubiquitous Dance Company led by artistic director Dee Dee Burzynski, and Velocity Dance Theatre led by artistic director Alesa Terry. Wurster, who serves as the group’s secretary and treasurer, said the idea to join together came out of a charitable event in 2006 for the Sparrow Clubs when different dance groups filled Bend’s Tower Theatre for several days of cabaret, swing and jazz dancing. The dance groups who participated were inspired by the success of the event. “When you’re so small you think, ‘What can I do in the community? Nobody knows me,’ and we pulled it off, so we were very proud of ourselves that year,” Wurster said. Bend Dance Project performs both separately and together. This April, the group is planning a show together with the theme of postcards, featuring the live music of the Pamela McGuire Trio. Choreographing an event such as this is a passion for its artistic directors. Terry, director of Velocity which consists mostThe Bulletin | 27
ly of teenage girls, likes to include her dancers in the choreography process. “I enjoy that it’s always evolving,” she said. “For me, choreography and that problem solving and creating a piece is what I like the best.” Bartley, who directs a group of adult women, also appreciates the choreography process. “It is hugely rewarding to be able to work with dancers who are willing to be challenged, each of whom contributes to the process of creating new dances,” Bartley said. “There are other dancers in the group besides myself who also choreograph for Jazz Dance Collective and who take turns leading our technique class.” Wurster agrees the ever-changing nature of dance is what has held her interest through the years. “I’ve always felt dance not only challenges your body, but it challenges your mind,” said Wurster.
Burzynski added it’s rewarding to work with dancers who also want to learn and grow. “The possibility to dream and with hard work, perseverance, dedication - and in many cases a large quantity of time - see those dreams come to fruition. To continually expand Central Oregon’s exposure, opportunities and training in the world of dance,” said Burzynski. Bend Dance Project wants to develop more appreciation for all forms of dance by bringing professional dance companies to visit Central Oregon. In the past year, they publicized the performances of the Paul Taylor Dance Company from New York City and the Eugene Ballet Company. “By connecting with the companies ahead of time, we were also able to arrange for affordable master classes for local dance students, taught by company members,” Bartley said. “These were fantastic

educational opportunities which, normally, local dance students would have to travel to participate in.” Terry said it’s inspiring to work with a larger group of dancers and bounce ideas off one another. “We can share ideas, we can grow the knowledge of dance,” added Terry.

Another benefit the participants enjoy is the camaraderie and bond that forms through hours of practice and performances. They hope the dance community as a whole becomes closer-knit and that dancers can move between companies and produce dances together. “Not only is dance great exercise, whether its ballet, modern, jazz, tap, ballroom, or belly dance, but it’s also an outstanding way to reduce stress and express yourself,” Bartley said. “I personally believe that every person is creative, and dance is a fabulous way to express that creativity.” The Bend Dance Project participants and board of directors are all volunteers. Their budget is fairly small with ticket prices funding basics such as new costumes and studio rentals. Details of Bend Dance Project’s spring show will be coming to www.benddanceproject.org.
