Message from the Editor:
There’s strength in happiness by Ben Montgomery / Special Projects Editor Happy people are more likely to give — to write a check, to volunteer their time or to help a stranger — than wealthy people. That’s one of the more pointed conclusions of a first-ofits-kind study by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), an international charity renowned for its research and philanthropic trends. In partnership with Gallup, CAF studied the charitable behavior in 153 countries representing 95 percent of the world’s population. The foundation looked at giving trends, well-being, happiness and wealth. In September of 2010, CAF released their final report, “The World Giving Index,” within which countries and regions are ranked based on overall generosity. Incidentally, the U.S. was ranked fifth in the world (tied with Switzerland) behind Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Canada. Overall, the study concludes that the main way “the world” gives is by helping strangers. Forty-five percent of the world’s population, on average, has given help directly to someone they have never met. (In the U.S., the average is 65 percent.) The study further reports that 30 percent of the world’s
population had given money to charity (60 percent in the U.S.) and 20 percent had volunteered time in the month prior (that’s 39 percent in the U.S.). This is all well and good, but what exactly do these numbers indicate? According to Dr. John Low, chief executive of the Charities Aid Foundation, giving is a clear indicator of strength. “Giving time or money voluntarily to help others is seen by sociologists as a marker of cohesiveness in a society,” Dr. Low wrote in the report’s forward. “The level of giving in a country indicates something about the strength of civil society — the extent to which individuals are willing and able to contribute toward addressing the needs of others both in their own localities and across the borders.” If this is true, then it seems safe to further conclude that Central Oregon packs a mighty punch strength-wise. This region’s charitable community has always been known as one of great outreach and innovation. Yet after facing economic difficulties over the last few years, the more savvy, streamlined version of this community has become even more effective in its mission to improve quality of life in the high desert. In this year’s edition of Connections, we again strive to celebrate Central Oregon’s nonprofit community, the work
they do, and the people who inspire this work through both heart and sweat. This year, we further wish to offer Connections as a more usable publication for those wishing to donate, volunteer or seek assistance. And as always, Connections contains one of Central Oregon’s most thorough listings of active local nonprofits, featuring more than 400 organizations from Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook counties. It has often been speculated that charitable giving, regardless of form, is contagious — that one selfless act can directly lead to another. The World Giving Index concludes there’s definite truth to this concept. “Happier people are more likely to give than wealthy people as satisfaction proves a stronger influence than wealth,” it states. “Those who donate are likely to help improve the happiness of others, who in turn may be more likely to give to charity, and so on.” It is our hope that this clearinghouse of nonprofit information serves as a year-round source for Central Oregonians who resolve to increase their levels of giving and volunteering in 2013. If happiness truly is an indicator of goodwill to both neighbors and strangers, it seems that in Central Oregon, we’re already on track toward greater strength and prosperity.

STATE OF CENTRAL OREGON’S NONPROFIT COMMUNITY:
Collaboration is the Key Central Oregon nonprofits working together as they trudge through difficult financial times. by Kathy Oxborrow, for The Bulletin Special Projects
Just when Central Oregon nonprofit organizations began to feel like the dark days of the “Great Recession” were behind them, they are faced with new challenges. You’ve probably heard of the “fiscal cliff” by now. Officially called “sequestration,” the U.S. Congress and President Barack Obama were tasked with coming up with deficit reducing measures by Monday, Dec. 31 or face automatic spending cuts of $1.2 trillion phased in over a 10-year period beginning Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013. About half of those cuts, $5.4 billion, were set for non-defense programs — also known as social service programs. In addition, the Bushera tax cuts are scheduled to expire at the end of the year along with President Obama’s payroll tax deductions. The U.S. Congress set the fiscal cliff in motion as a mechanism to force all the parties to agree on a budget that addressed the $16.3 trillion national debt. Since 2007, the federal government has eliminated more than $1 trillion from domestic programs for Americans, and state governments have cut more than $250 billion, but the human need has not gone away. These spending reductions have only shifted the volume of work—but not supporting dollars—to nonprofit organizations, including those who provide valuable services here in Central Oregon..
“Thirty-three organizations have come together to discuss how we can pool our creativity to forward art and culture and heritage.” — Cate O’Hagan, Executive Director of Arts Central

“Regardless of how congress resolves the fiscal cliff, nonprofits are facing a new reality going forward,” said Jim White, executive director of the Nonprofit Association of Oregon. “In 2011, Oregon nonprofits were already reporting that 26 percent had to scale back programs and 51 percent had to turn away clients. In the coming months, difficult budget decisions will be made, and the threat is catastrophic to the nonprofit sector. Our communities and the many vulnerable people are at risk.” Ken Wilhelm, executive director of United Way of Deschutes County, said federal cutbacks will hurt local nonprofits from those that help seniors and people with disabilities to those that serve disadvantaged children to those that provide temporary shelter and permanent housing. “You can expect to see collateral damage across the spectrum,” Wilhelm said. Jason Carr, executive director of the Partnership to End Poverty, said that even though fundraising levels for nonprofits are rising, they still have not returned to the levels prior to the recession, causing nonprofits to try and fulfill an even greater need with the same or fewer resources. Now with the impending additional federal funding cuts, they will be expected to do even more with less. One option floated as a way to reduce the budget deficit and increase revenue is to put a cap on charitable deductions. This option would disproportionately hurt Oregon nonprofits because charitable giving is high in the state. The Oregon Community Foundation just released a report, called “Giving in Oregon 2012,” which notes that: Oregonians, across income levels, are giving more generously than national averages. Oregon continues to rank in the top 20 states for charitable giving. Nonprofits in Oregon reported almost $1.5 billion in charitable contributions in 2010. Nearly 90 percent of charitable contributions were reported by nonprofits in just eight counties (Benton, Clackamas, Deschutes, Jackson, Lane, Marion, Multnomah and Washington counties). “We now have this perfect storm hap-
pening, a hobbling if you will, a tying of the legs of the people onto which we are loading more of the burden by saying, ‘Oh, and by the way, you can’t raise more money either,’” White said. He added that there will be a double hit for nonprofits if limits to charitable giving are put in place as part of the plan to raise more tax revenue. “Oregon nonprofits, already stretched by an anemic recovery and slowdown in charitable giving caused by the recession, will not be able to fill the gaps,” he said. White has been speaking around the state urging nonprofit organizations to contact their Congressional delegation and let them know how harmful cap-
Mid-Columbia Economic Development District, a five county region spanning Washington and Oregon. MMT fellow, Kip Baratoff, whose research led to project’s creation, has managed the initiative. Doug Stamm, CEO of MMT, said the platform intends to improve the strategic deployment of capital into communities by coordinating investment among public, private and philanthropic providers around prioritized community needs. “It’s a way to organize community priorities within a region and communicate them to a broad array of funders,” said Stamm. ping the charitable deduction would be to Oregon nonprofits. However, there is a bright side to what’s been happening with nonprofits. Grappling with the effects of the recession, nonprofits started working more collaboratively with each other, with the faith community and with the private sector. Foundations also ventured into new partnerships. In response to the economic downturn, some foundations funded projects outside their traditional giving areas. Under the initial leadership of the Meyer Memorial Trust (MMT), a multi-stakeholder collaborative is now pioneering a new economic development investment platform being pilot tested in the
web application has been developed to enable private capital investors, government agencies and foundations to match their available funds to the identified needs. Called the Investment Platform for Economic Development (IPED), the project is funded by MMT, the Ford Family Foundation, the Oregon Governor’s Strategic Reserve and the U.S. Economic Development Administration. Stamm says IPED has the potential to be applied throughout the state and across other areas of the country. The joint effort of IPED’s participants is an example of “collective impact,” a term coined by FSG, an international nonprofit consulting firm.
“They’ve taken the nonprofit and the community world by storm because they have talked about the need to do cross-sector collaboration,” said Joyce Akse, director of the Ford Family Foundation’s Institute for Community Building, speaking of FSG. She said the Ford Institute has started to apply this model in some of its work to create a framework for how participants can organize themselves. Many nonprofits are also using this approach, Akse said. FSG’s collective impact model lists five conditions that need to occur if you want to achieve wider scale and higher impact work in communities. The conditions are: a common agenda, shared measurement systems, mutually reinforcing activities, continuous communication and the presence of a backbone organization. FSG says three elements must be in place before beginning a collective impact initiative: an influential champion, adequate financial resources and a sense of urgency for change. The Mobile Medical Unit initiated by Central Oregon Veterans Outreach, (COVO) represents a collective impact approach locally. Surveying veterans in the homeless camps that surround Central Oregon communities, COVO determined that veterans needed health care brought to them. COVO, with the support of more than 25 local agencies, went to work. It acquired a broken down van from NeighborImpact and, using volunteer veterans, got the engine running, outfitted the interior to accommodate delivering medical services, and painted the exterior. Doctors and nurses from Volunteers in Medicine, St. Charles Health System and Bend Memorial Clinic donated their services, and Bend’s First Baptist Church continues to contribute $100 a month for prescriptions and medical supplies. The Collins Foundation gave a grant, and other veteran groups and the Elks donated money. Family Kitchen prepared sack lunches, and Vital Provisions and Helpful Hearts assembled hygiene kits to take to the veterans living in the camps. Volunteers from local churches helped in camp cleanups. COVO developed outcome measures The Bulletin | 5

which is leading the program toward a more solid future. “We were able to demonstrate sufficient savings and efficiencies that now, Mosaic Medical, as of January 1, 2013, will take over the responsibility for the Mobile Medical Unit,” said Chuck Hemingway, COVO’s executive director. While cross-sector collaborations among Central Oregon nonprofits may not encompass all five conditions that FSG says collective impact requires, these collaborative efforts demonstrate how working together creates a much better outcome. The Family Access Network partners with more than 100 local groups, including social service agencies, churches and businesses, to ensure that disadvantaged children have their basic needs of food, shelter, clothing and health care met. Josh Alpert with Oregon Trust for Public Land credits the recent approval of the Bend Parks and Recreation District’s bond measure for improving the trails system to the joint effort of the business community, city and county government, other environmental groups, St. Charles Health System and Visit Bend. The common concern was preserving Central Oregon’s recreation and tourist-based economy because that’s what attracts individuals
and businesses to locate here, according to Alpert. Cate O’Hagan, the executive director of Arts Central, said within the arts community, the initiation of the Arts and Culture Alliance is an example of the effort being made to collaborate. “Thirty-three organizations have come together to discuss how we can pool our creativity to forward arts and culture and heritage,” said O’Hagan. Scott Cooper, who sits on the Mosaic Medical Board, attributes the organization’s rapid growth to its “extreme partnerships with other entities in both the for-profit and nonprofit community.” Wearing his hat as the new executive director of NeighborImpact, Cooper said that the organization’s food bank program has 46 nonprofit partners. Annually, the partners distribute 3.5 million pounds of food to 55,000 people. Today’s economic landscape is certainly posed to present additional challenges to nonprofits. The current financial reality will demand that they embrace new and creative ways to do business. Nonprofits have demonstrated they can successfully meet new challenges in the past and, with continued support from all sectors of our community, their ability to serve their constituencies will endure.

Supporting kids, community Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Oregon empowers kids to discover the path to their dreams. by John Cal, for The Bulletin Special Projects
I’ve passed by the Boys and Girls Club countless times, on foot coming and going from the library or driving through downtown Bend toward Jackson’s Corner or the Old Mill. Its charming rounded peak is flanked by stairs beckoning entrance into perhaps Bend’s most majestically understated building, a façade of red brick and field stone. Built in 1917, the building itself is historical in it’s own right. I’ve had and still have friends who currently work at the club. I hear them talking about dodge ball and snack time, rock climbing and carrot sticks, and I’ve always had an idea of what went on there — homework and finger paints, hand-cut paper chains and bean bags — but the reality of what it means to effect change, to be a part of a kid’s life, the reality of what the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Oregon actually does reach much deeper and further than foosball tables and after-school arithmetic. “People grew up with the old Boys Club mod-
els — a pool table, a basketball hoop, a pool, and maybe a woodshop — and that’s what they needed at the time” said Lisa Maxwell, executive director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Oregon. “Swim and gym,” she continued, “and the myth is starting to be dispelled, the old idea that clubs across the country are serving ‘delinquent kids.’ We’re not serving delinquent kids. We’re serving great kids.” As society changes and the needs of our communities and the families that make up our communities shift and diversify, Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Oregon continues to adapt to serve Central Oregon’s kids. “We never demand or force kids to participate. That’s their choice,” said Nate Wyeth, the club’s development and marketing director. “It’s about empowering them to discover the path to their own dreams instead of prescribing goals for them. When kids are discovering their own passions, enthusiasm and empowerment is contagious. It happens naturally.” The Bulletin | 9
Derek Beauvais, club director, is on the floor, with kids day to day seeing and intentionally fostering this passion. “A big part of what makes the club so awesome is based on our balanced and diverse staff,” he said. “We want them to use their strengths and passions when they interact with our kids. It’s why we do what we do and why it works so well.” Staff members foster organic and individualized relationships with kids, connecting with them based on mutual interests. “When our staff connect with the kids, it’s real. It’s not faked fun,” Beauvais said. “We love what we do, and that’s so inspirational for the kids to see, that someone really cares and takes genuine interest in their lives.” It’s this larger lexicon of knowledge and interests held by both workers and kids that attend the club that creates community, that makes it possible for staff and kids alike to participate in their passions. And it goes far beyond just tutoring and educational mentoring. Learning at the club is holistic and integrally made fun, teaching basic math skills through playing pool or respect for each other while par-

ticipating in basketball. “We try to have as many opportunities for our kids to discover their passions,” Beauvais said. “There are projects and programs throughout the year that encourage self discovery.” Right alongside with the club’s more traditional learning programs that assist kids in tutoring, adolescent changes, and even how to attain college scholarships, the club also offers individualized program that touch on specific interests and passions. One such program is Girls on the Run started by council director,
Melissa MacManiman, a program that’s at work in three sites across Deschutes county. The program works to teach girls in the third through eighth grades about their self worth and develop life skills through the practicality of preparing for a 5K race. “It’s really about giving them the tools to make healthy decisions and develop positive self image,” MacManiman said. Yet another one of the opportunities offered is the club program “Get Out” started by club staffer Dave Thomas. Affectionately called DT, Dave set out to create an envi-
ronment wherein kids learn life skills, teamwork and community against the backdrop of the Central Oregon’s epic outdoors — rafting, hiking, mountain biking and caving. The program has been wildly successful at giving kids the opportunity to, as DT put it, “just be outside”. “It’s important that our club reflect not only our kids but also the community and our values. . . it’s really exciting that we get to personalize what we do in that way,” said Maxwell. This blend of personalities, programs and interest in the club’s staff is part of what is so empowering to kids, that they can find someone who is like them, who shares their dreams and, in part, can see the world and offer understanding in a way that their parents, teachers or even peers can. “We’re not here to be or replace parents or teachers. We want to be a part of that support that’s already being offered, but we do want to be role models and mentors and cheerleaders,” Beauvais said. “They get a different kind of learning here, that hopefully helps support what’s happening at home or school . . . it’s sort of magical.”

Paddling a vision forward The Bend Paddle Trail Alliance serves to enhance and protect local recreational opportunities. by Kari Mauser, for The Bulletin Special Projects
A daydream-inspired wish, muttered aloud almost dismissively, seemed to catch on the water’s surface. The idea spread like ripples when a rock breaks the water’s surface. Soon, it had stirred up a conversation that was the beginning of something bigger than the daydream itself had been in the first place. A number of kayakers in search of somewhere to play kept finding themselves in the whitewater eddies of the river canals on the edges of town. Though the waves were always fun and often exhilarating, the one thing they weren’t was legal. So as the days on the canals passed in the summer of 2000, a group of avid river canal users started talking about how great it would be if there could be a legal whitewater park right in Bend. The idea took hold, and together the group began pursuing ways to make their wish come true. They started brainstorming ideas of how to enhance the Colorado Avenue spillway, including the addition of a whitewater surf park, and opened communications with property owners and officials.
It was the start of what would prove over time to be an organization at the heart of the community. In the spring of 2005, the Bend Paddle Trail Alliance was formed as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, made up of individuals from many different backgrounds. Together, they dug in and began researching exactly what it was going to take to see this daydream become reality. According to board member Jason Offutt, because the committee came from various disciplines, their research was thorough and effective. “It was great to have a team of wonderfully talented individuals. We all took the lead at times,” he said. “We met, discussed and assigned tasks for each other, and they were each completed without a hitch.”

Ingersoll

The members set to work with the appropriate agencies, landowners and other stakeholders in an effort to obtain the required permits and raise the funds needed to renovate the Colorado Avenue spillway. “Our original mission [as a nonprofit] was really to create river awareness from the High Cascade Lakes to where the middle of the Deschutes River starts,” Offutt said. “It was also water safety and the Colorado Avenue spillway enhancements.” While there were two organizations already operating with focus on the river, one was concerned with water quantity and the other water quality. Bend Paddle Trail Alliance was initiated with the hope to bring the people element into the equation. “Outdoor recreation is the backbone of Central Oregon,” said BPTA’s current president Will Blount. “Whether it’s skiing and snowboarding, hiking, biking or paddling, people here are active and engaged in the recreational space.” The board members of BPTA share that love of the outdoors and have a particular passion for the rivers and lakes. Though they come from diverse backgrounds and professions, each of them has been introduced to paddling activities at some point in their lives and has been inspired by it. “If you asked any one of us where our soul sleeps, every one of us would tell you, ‘Beside the river.’” Blount said. “And it’s natural to want to share that passion with others and to protect that resource. There’s a sense

of community on the river. It’s a place of incredible bonds and friendships — a shared appreciation.” From the beginning, those who have been board members have recognized the amazing resource that the Deschutes River is. “I’ve spent a lot of time on the East Coast, and it is so rare to find a town with such a pristine river running right through it,” Blount said. “The possibility of putting a whitewater surf park right in town, in the community, would enhance the river — this incredible resource that we have.” The success BPTA saw in the first two years drew the attention of Bend Park and Recreation District. “We were raising project awareness with movie nights for fundraisers, and they were always sold out,” Offutt said, adding that they were also raising money with silent auctions and other events. Then, since Bend Park and Recre-
ation District had shown interest, the group took the project to them for help bridging some of the required permitting. “They took the ball and went running with it for sure,” Offutt said. Over the years, while the whitewater park has remained at the forefront of BPTA’s objectives, the board has also worked together to create a series of lake and river guides aimed at helping people understand where they can put in and take out and where the hazards are along the paddle trail that the team established — a trail that includes 25 miles of the Little Deschutes, 93 miles of the Deschutes, and nine miles of the High Cascade Lakes. The paddle trail, Blount explained, is like a hiking or biking trail, except on the water. It’s for paddle boards, canoes and kayaks. It’s one of the first in Oregon, he said. And the whitewater park at the Colorado Avenue spillway will be the
very first in Oregon. Thanks to the passing of a $29 million bond measure in November, the project finally has a chance to become reality. The bond, created to expand Bend Park and Recreation District development work, however, doesn’t fund the surf park itself. It does lay the groundwork, funding a new bridge with safe passage for floaters as well as riparian restoration. BPTA is committed to fundraising the difference, to finally see the Colorado Avenue spillway enhancement that’s been their vision for so long. But it’s not just the enhancement to the river that’s been a driving force behind the spillway project, according to Blount. It’s also the economic benefit to the entire community, the promise of sustained families and businesses, he explained. “The rivers are the arteries of the planet, and so many things are connected to the rivers that it is hard to even start to quantify,” Blount said. “We have one flowing right through our backyard … and it’s staggering when you think about all the people who are recreating on the waters here and all the local businesses touched by that recreation.” So putting our outdoor recreational assets to work for the community’s economic benefit, along with being stewards of those assets, is a great way to build a sustainable future — a future the board members of BPTA envision and work tirelessly to promote. The power of Laundry Love Part of an international program, Laundry Love offers confidence through cleanliness. by Gregg Morris, for The Bulletin Special Projects
Interviewing for a job can be a stressful endeavor. This becomes especially true if that job means the difference between paying for a roof over your head and living on the street. In addition, that job could provide you with the ability to feed your family. Now imagine having to worry about one of the most basic parts to a good interview: clean clothes. For most of us, the thought of clean clothes for a job interview is a no brainer, but for many families living below the poverty line, cleanliness becomes another obstacle in the path toward self reliance. With that in mind, Laundry Love was born. “We offer a program for laundry coverage where we supply detergent and the quarters,” said Justin Bronson, leader of Bend’s chapter of this international program. “We want them to be able to walk into an interview without the stigma of dirty clothes. This social and cultural discrimi-
nation is a fact of life.” The beauty of Laundry Love lies in its simplicity. By eliminating the financial hardship and logistical problems associated with clean clothes, Laundry Love is able to boost not only the chance to get a job, but overall confidence in men, women and children as they stroll through everyday life. “Our goal is to help people go from dependence of government programs to independence in the form of a job,” Bronson said. Bend resident Spice Darnall is the mother of two boys and has taken advantage of Laundry Love for about a year. She learned of the program through Project Connect. “By the time you pay your bills, there isn’t much left,” Darnall said. “It alleviates a lot of stress.” Laundry Love utilizes a small, unpaid staff and a budget of around $300 per month to help those struggling to afford laundry services. “We have no office or no paid staff, and we are able to help anywhere between 20 to 80 people The Bulletin | 19
each week,” Bronson said. “In the last two years, we have seen close to a thousand people.” The all-volunteer staff, usually consisting of Bronson and his wife, Sasha, along with another couple, has recently received some additional help. “It’s nice to see some of our longtime participants helping to guide the newer ones,” Bronson said. Reaching more than one section of our population allows Laundry Love to have a community minded approach to helping. “We have a diverse socio-economic group that use our program,” Bronson said. “Some participants live in tents outside of town. Others are just down on their luck and need a little help.” While Laundry Love does keep track of their numbers, participation in the program does not require identification, residency or proof of hardship. Laundry Love supporters are merely interested in helping people who need a little help. “Many of my friends take advantage of the free showers in town, but then they put on dirty clothes,”
Darnall said. “Something as basic as clean laundry is amazing. I’ve told several homeless friends about it.” A wide-range of locations and participants has made Laundry Love a worldwide charity movement. Facebook pages dedicated to different projects and websites giving step-by-step instructions on how to start a Laundry Love program in your area ease the transi-
tion from interest to action. There are currently close to 130 chapters of Laundry Love across the globe. In Central Oregon alone, two chapters of Laundry Love exist. While Bronson runs Bend’s group, there is also a Redmond-based program. Justin estimates between the two Central Oregon programs, they have helped close to two thousand people.
Bend’s Laundry Love is fortunate enough to have a benefactor in the form of Journey Church. Since its inception in 2010, Laundry Love’s $300 monthly operating cost has been included in the Journey Church budget. Bronson, however, sees Laundry Love as being bigger than just a religious-based program. “We want this program to be a community project and not just the church’s,” he said. “Backporch Coffee Roasters has graciously allowed us to place pamphlets and donation boxes in both of their coffee shops.” By partnering with local laundromats, Laundry Love is able to offer some financial relief to those less fortunate. This help is often the difference in getting a job, keeping a child from being made fun of in school, or simply allowing someone struggling under the poverty line to experience a higher level of self-worth. Bend’s laundry Love operates every second and fourth Sunday, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Westside CoinOp Laundry, located off Galveston Road. Teams participate in Bend’s annual Walk to Defeat ALS / Photo courtesy of ALS Association’s Oregon and Southwest Washington Chapter
Imagine a world without ALS Central Oregon benefits from the ALS Association’s Oregon and Southwest Washington Chapter by Gregg Morris, for The Bulletin Special Projects
Four years ago, Don Larson was performing at a weekend gig with his daughter, Bend resident Shallon Mehr, when he began to feel stiffness in his left hand. Larson, a well-respected Spokane, Wash., musician, chalked it up to fatigue. Then, his mouth started to become weak and his voice began to slur. “After two years of misdiagnoses, dad was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) in February of 2011,” Mehr said. “The first thing I did was get online to research his symptoms and help with a diagnosis. I wanted to get as much information as I could.” More than 5,600 cases of ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, are diagnosed each year, and at any given time as many as 30,000 Americans are living with ALS. In Oregon and Southwest Washington, there are an estimated 500 families living with ALS. Currently, there is no known cause or cure. “There is an overwhelming sense of helpless-
ness associated with this disease,” Mehr said. “This is the cruelest disease I have ever witnessed. It essentially traps its victims inside their body.” In September, Mehr organized a team in honor of her father for the two-mile ALS walk in Bend’s Old Mill District. Shortly thereafter, she received a call from the ALS Association. “They wanted to make sure everything was being done for my father,” she said. “They were concerned his care had fallen through the cracks.” This proactive act of kindness was Mehr’s first impression of the ALS Association. Our regional chapter of the ALS Association has been providing education and services to people with ALS, their families, and caregivers since 2002. According to Meagan Lancaster, fundraising manager for the ALS Association’s Oregon & Southwest Washington Chapter, their vision is to “create a world without ALS.” “The biggest part of my job is to connect with families,” explains Betsy Paige, LMSW, local services coordinator for Central Oregon. “I like to feel the satisfaction that people are getting what The Bulletin | 23
they need. I want to pull together the people with what they need to ease the burden.” As her title indicates, the most important part of Paige’s job is coordinating. A typical week for Paige may include informing families living with ALS of the monthly support group, making sure patients receive communication devices, or rallying to prevent “caregiver burnout.” One of the main problems with fighting a disease with no known cause or cure is the onslaught of misdiagnoses that befall on the affected. This becomes even more frustrating considering early diagnosis is extremely beneficial for treatment. “Because of the problem in my father’s mouth, the original diagnosis was Bell’s Palsy,” Mehr said. “They ran through the gamut of tests ending with a spinal tap. His motor skills kept getting worse. The worst part was not knowing what was going on.” In keeping with their mission of leading the fight to treat and cure ALS, the ALS Association offers individualized services in the form of education, treatment and support. Through programs and medical centers sponsored by the ALS Association, The ALS Association

CenterSM Program is able to offer specialized treatment on a global scale. Locally, the ALS Association works closely with St. Charles Medical Center to ensure the needs of Central Oregonians living with the disease are being met. “Every two months, we bring in specialists to help diagnose and treat people,” Paige said. “It helps to get all of them in one central location, rather than having the patients drive around to the different
specialists.” In addition to medical assistance, the ALS Association also offers financial assistance and coordination with medical devices designed to help patients lead a fuller life. Devices such as portable showers, communication devices and feeding tubes aid both the afflicted and their caregivers. “It is important caregivers take care of themselves as well,” Paige said. “I am kind of a nag in making sure the caregivers take some time
away from the patients. It helps to keep the situation a little more energized.” ALS is a disease that affects not only those who have contracted the illness, but their families, friends and those who offer their support. “The hardest part is bearing witness to the daily losses,” Paige said. “The lack of control and the randomness of not having a cure has kicked my butt a couple of times. It’s hard work.” Once a month, Betsy organizes a local support group for those dealing with the disease. These meetings are a safe place to share advice and support among individuals living day to day with ALS. “I don’t push the support groups,” Paige said. “I offer it to people and revisit the idea, but I don’t want to push it on anybody. People deal in different ways.” Central Oregon’s monthly support group takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month, at St. Charles Medical Center. The local Walk to Defeat ALS take place annually on the second Saturday in September. The walk begins at Riverbend Park. Visit webor.alsa.org for more information on ALS or ideas of how you can help.

NEED HELP?
DIAL 2-1-1
Central Oregon 2-1-1 connects those in need with local organizations that provide relevant services. by Bridget McGinn, for The Bulletin Special Projects Connecting people with community resources is the goal of Central Oregon 2-1-1: a free, confidential service that has served as a model for similar programs throughout the state. Dialing 2-1-1 or accessing an online database at www. co211.info provides resources to help address issues related to a variety of concerns. The most common inquiries are those related to food, shelter, utilities and health care. Initially the bulk of inquiries to the service were made through Dial 2-1-1, but the service has seen a steady increase in online usage. People who access the service online are able to search the community information database, the exact same resource that call center staff utilize to respond to queries, and which is continually updated. The online service is quick and easy to use: Click on the “Search Now” button, enter your zip code or select the nearest city from the dropdown menu and choose a category. Every step of the process is clear and includes tips and instructions. Results include comprehensive contact information and are designed to help make connections between those in need and resources that can help. While calls to the service are handled by professionals at a call center based in Portland, re-
sponsibility for maintaining the extensive local database of social service and organizational resources is held by staff at Central Oregon Family Resource Center. Ken Wilhelm, executive director of the United Way of Deschutes County, the lead partner in Central Oregon 2-1-1, credits the commitment of the local nonprofit staff with the success of the program in our region. “I’ve been really impressed with the work that the Family Resource Center does plus their commitment to changing their approach to do whatever is necessary to make sure the program is a success,” said Wilhelm. 211info, an Oregon 501(c)(3) nonprofit, provides core infrastructure support to the statewide 2-1-1 network. The Central Oregon 2-1-1 program had a unique role to fill in Oregon when it was launched in 2009. “Central Oregon was the first area in the state outside of Portland to get 211 service,” said Wilhelm. “We developed the model to handle information locally while the calls were answered at the call center in Portland. This is now the model used around the state.” By early 2013, 100 percent of the state’s population—even those living in the most rural areas—will be covered by the 2-1-1 service, something that Wilhelm feels proud to be a part of.
“We’ve been talking about having a central database since I came here 25 years ago,” said Wilhelm. “We have finally moved forward with a model that works not only locally but that is helping to get service to people across the whole state.” Future plans for the program include enhancing the system to further assist in disaster or emergency situations, reducing the volume of non-critical calls to 911. The Central Oregon 2-1-1 program serves Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook Counties. The phone lines are staffed Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the website is of course available at all hours.

Make the
Volunteer Connection
Volunteer Connect builds a bridge between local nonprofits and those wishing to volunteer. by Bridget McGinn, for The Bulletin Special Projects Research indicates that volunteering can provide health benefits such as lower mortality rates, greater functional ability and lower rates of depression later in life. It is not only individual health that can benefit from volunteering, but the overall health of an entire community, says Betsy Warriner, executive director of Volunteer Connect. The Central Oregon nonprofit has been fostering a caring, vibrant community in Central Oregon since 2004. “We’ve been very steadily focused on connecting volunteers with opportunities that interest them and have seen steady growth in the number of volunteers as well as the number of organizations that we have served,” said Warriner. In 2012 Volunteer Connect served more than 2000 individual volunteers and assisted 110 local organizations with their volunteer needs. They also took on the annual Project Connect event, bringing together 800 volunteers and 2500 guests at the “one day, one stop” provision of services for those in need. The organization provides both one-time and ongoing volunteer opportunities. To access their database, visit www.volunteerconnectnow.org and click on “Find a Volunteer Opportunity.” You can review the calendar for one-time volunteer opportunities or click on “Search the Database” for an extensive and detailed search function. Options
include selecting the area or issue you want to focus on, times you are available and the population you want to serve. Other choices include reviewing opportunities by organization, and -- for those willing to make an even greater contribution -- the site includes a listing of organizations currently seeking volunteer members for their board of directors. Volunteer Connect recently launched Career Connect, designed to assist people who are unemployed. “Many times people find that the longer they are unemployed the harder and harder it becomes to find a job,” said Warriner. “There is a gap in their resume that just continues to grow.” Career Connect helps to fill that gap with valuable volunteer experience, as well as providing opportunities for networking and skill enhancement. According to Warriner, the number one impact of volunteering is on the lives of those directly served. Beyond that, volunteering connects the community and allows people from different walks of life to encounter each other, build relationships and understand each other. “Volunteering allows people to better understand situations, such as homelessness, and the underlying factors surrounding the issue,” said Warriner. “Volunteers can then become advocates, working on the root causes of issues and taking action to
make things different.” In addition, volunteering can have a significant impact on our community at large. “There are many organizations for which volunteers provide the majority of hours of service; more than paid staff time,” said Warriner. “Many organizations would not survive without volunteer support or would not be able to achieve their missions without volunteers.” To learn more about volunteer opportunities in Central Oregon, visit www.volunteerconnectnow. org, call 541-385-8977 or make an appointment to visit their office at 404 NE Norton Ave.

first story | 45 HOMES AND GROWING ...
15 YEARS OF GIVING Every year millions of children around the world share a single holiday wish. Instead of gifts under the tree or lights in the windows, these children hope for something more meaningful, a home. First Story, a local non-profit founded in Redmond, is making these wishes come true for hundreds of children throughout the Northwest.
“Through the work we are doing at First Story, we are reminded that the holidays are truly about family traditions, giving and children.” Hayden Watson, CEO of Hayden Homes.
First Story partners with reputable, award-winning builders to build quality, affordable homes in safe, stable neighborhoods for families in need. Homes are awarded through a 30-year no interest and no down payment loan to qualified low-income families.
Visit firststory.org to download a home owner application.
The most precious gift is to give.
First Story would not be where it is today without the continued support from local builder Hayden Homes. Hayden Homes, its employees, trade partners and suppliers have been the backbone of First Story since the organization was founded in 1998. Other key local partners include: Woodhill Homes, Parr Lumber, LP Building Products, MCM Fund, Cascade Lakes Brewing Co., Building Partners for Affordable Housing, COBA, YouthBuild U.S.A. and Tetherow.
Help First Story give the gift of a lifetime to local families next year. To donate towards a home being built in Central Oregon visit www. firststory.org, email us at info@ firststory.org or call 541-728-0830
