W

hat started two decades ago in a local high school gymnasium has grown into the region’s biggest home and garden event — the Central Oregon Builders Association (COBA) Spring Home and Garden Show Presented by Standard TV and Appliance. The show will take over the Bank of the Cascades Event Center on the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center grounds Friday, May 1, noon to 6 p.m.; Saturday, May 2, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, May 3, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. COBA expects more than 10,000 people to view the products and services offered by builders and home improvement retailers. “It’s the biggest opportunity to get in front of the largest amount of people and show your products or services,” said Sheri Terry, in charge of events, sales and business development for COBA. More than 170 vendors will set up to invade two buildings and an outside area. In addition to the typical contractor booths inside, the diverse set of companies will showcase items including cooking products, heating & cooling devices, financial planning and bedding, home décor and much more. Outside, vendors representing solar energy, hot tubs, tractors and landscaping companies will showcase their wares alongside local marketplace and vendors. New to the event this year is the Taps N Tastes featuring

eight of your favorite Oregon brews including Atlas Cider, Bend Brewing Company, GoodLife, Three Creeks Brewery, Sunriver Brewing and Pelican Brewery. Open Friday and Saturday during regular show hours, Taps N Tastes is on the north end of the building. A photo ID is required for tastes, or buy a glass and enjoy at your leisure. “You can even bring a growler and fill it to go,” said Terry. Jake Woodruff, owner of Northwest Quality Roofing. has been a vendor at the show for the last four years. “I like to keep myself connected with the community as well as the building community. We get a lot of leads.” In addition to the various showcases of products and services, the Spring Home and Garden Show will host numerous workshops and seminars. Every year the Master Gardeners host seminars and hands-on options that are a much loved series, and this year there will be workshops on security, financing, solar and skin-care tips at various times each day. The Spring Home and Garden Show hosts attendees from across the region in an attempt to inform and educate on the products and services available. This will be the third year the event is free to the public. “We pull from all over Central Oregon,” said Terry. “We get people who are looking to make updates or changes, both big and small, to their home.” COBA’s mission is “to represent the building industry before government and the community, to promote high

workshops & more! ethical standards within the building industry, to provide service to its membership and to defend the opportunities of home ownership for all.” With that in mind, the Spring Home and Garden Show, in conjunction with their other events such as the Tour of Homes, works to further their message. “We are here to help the builders market their products and services, and build their relationship with their clients,” explained Terry. “This show helps us do that.” The 2015 Spring Home and Garden Show is made possible by our sponsors, without whom this grand event wouldn’t be possible year after year. A special thanks to Standard TV & Appliance, Building Solutions, Hippo Financial, Great Northern Window Company, Alpha Turf, Resist all Seamless Gutters and Septic Pros, and The Bulletin. HomeStreet Loan Center Funding Your Dream Home Project

By Tom Ferrara When it comes to homes these days, customization is the name of the game. Whether building or remodeling, the construction process gives you the opportunity to customize just the way you want. You may not find the exact features you desire in a spec home or perhaps you’ve found an existing home in the perfect neighborhood but it lacks features important to you. These are both reasons to consider custom construction or renovation to ensure that your home

isn’t just a house — it’s your dream home. You may think that the complexity of financing custom construction or renovation will be an obstacle, but it doesn’t need to be. Of course for smaller renovation projects, you might choose to use cash or revolving credit, but what about larger projects or custom construction? There are numerous types of renovation loans available based on the sizes and scope of the project. Some options allow only for basic renovations, while others are available for making more luxurious upgrades.

If you are building from the ground up, a “construction to permanent” loan may be a good option. This type of loan is exactly what the name implies; it’s a construction loan during the construction of the home and converts to a permanent mortgage after the home is completed. This type of loan may sometimes be used for major renovations to an existing structure, as well, if the project is large enough. Regardless of your project, it is advisable to consult with an experienced mortgage lender before deciding on how you are going to fund the work.

With major renovations or construction, each situation is unique, so the lender will go over all of the details with you to determine what your options are. You may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it’s possible to live in your dream home after all. Tom Ferrara (NMLS ID# 590587) has worked in the mortgage industry for 17 years as a Sr. Mortgage Loan Officer, Certified Builder Rep and Sales Manager. Tom manages the HomeStreet Home Loan Center at 360 SW Bond Street, Suite 120 in Bend Oregon, and can be reached at 541-815-8050.

Parr Lumber Company When Choosing a Supplier for Your Spring Project, it’s What You Find Inside That Matters Most. “Many people recognize Parr’s iconic blue and white stores and delivery vehicles stacked with materials,” said Regional Manager Doug Nelson. “But what they don’t see until they come inside our stores is the incredible depth of our product lines, the breadth of our design services, the beautiful displays, and experts in every category.” This is the time of year that people start thinking about outdoor projects. Whether you are planning to expand your deck, put in a new patio, create a spectacular outdoor living experience, or simply pick up a new BBQ grill for the backyard, step inside your nearest Parr Lumber location to see what it has to offer. This is a special year for the family-owned and family-operated company, celebrating its 85th anniversary with 30 locations in the Northwest, three of which (Bend, Prineville, and Burns) are in Central Oregon.

Inside every Parr Lumber store you’ll find what you need for your next project, including design tools to help visualize your project, estimating services to ensure an accurate budget, and free delivery. Parr has one of the largest window and door departments in Central Oregon with five dedicated window and door experts; cabinet displays; and countless deck, railing, and fence options. In addition, the Prineville and Burns

locations have top-notch paint departments that can custom color-match any color imaginable and offer high quality Benjamin Moore, Pratt and Lambert, and Miller paints. These two locations also specialize in farm and ranch supplies for pole barns, hay sheds, and storage buildings. The employees inside also make the difference at Parr Lumber. “Our employees are some of the most experienced and knowledgeable experts in the industry,” said Nancy Cranston, Parr’s marketing manager. “We are very proud of our continuing education program that includes online instruction, instore training, and handson manufacturer classes every month of the year. We provide contractors and homeowners with resources and a level of

support that’s second to none.” Parr’s product experts include window and door specialists, paint consultants, truss designers for remodel or new construction projects, and cabinet designers trained in three-dimensional CAD designs. Doug Nelson is excited about this year’s COBA Spring Home and Garden Show. “We live in one of the most beautiful areas of the entire country. It makes sense that people would want to invest in the inside and outdoor living spaces of their homes,” he said. “The COBA Spring Home and Garden Show gives us an opportunity to show homeowners all of the possibilities available.” This year Parr Lumber has a fantastic booth at the show that will highlight several styles of composite decking and state-of-the-art railing systems from Trex and TimberTech, as well as concrete patio products and retaining wall block from Basalite. Several models of BBQ grills from Traeger and Green Mountain will be on display next to latticework and patio furniture. If you are thinking about an outdoor project or any project this year, a great place to start is inside the home and garden show and inside a Parr Lumber location.

Shade On Demand 4 WAYS TO SHADE YOUR DECK OR PATIO If you want to make your deck or patio more enjoyable this summer, consider these four ways to provide shelter from the sun, and in some cases, rain and even snow (yes, it can snow here just about any month!).

1. Louvered Roof Systems

Imagine a solid roof over your patio that you could actually open up to let in just the amount of sun desired. The Equinox® Louvered Roof accomplishes just that, with motorized 8” extruded aluminum louvers that rotate a full 160 degrees. In the fully closed position, you are protected from sun, rain and snow. Rotate the louvers to let in any amount of sun desired. Add solar screen shades on the east or west sides of any louvered roof structure to block lowangle sun, and you have an

outdoor living space you can use year-round.

2. Aluminum Shade Structures

Wood pergolas can provide shade from the sun, and can look beautiful when new. But the wood and finish deteriorate quickly and require extensive maintenance over time. Enter the Alumawood® Shade Structure. Made from cedar-embossed aluminum with a Teflon-coated painted surface with a 10year warranty, Alumawood Shade Structures are nearly maintenance free, and look as beautiful as they are functional. Just hose them off periodically to remove dust and pollen. The structures can be customized with posts and columns to match any home design.

3. Retractable Awnings

If you do not want a permanent structure over your deck or patio, consider a retractable lateral arm awning. Most retractable awnings are motorized for your convenience. Protected by wireless wind/motion sensors, the awnings are retracted automatically when winds exceed a set threshold. Choose from a wide variety of beautiful Sunbrella® woven acrylic fabrics, in both solids and stripes. Projections range up to 16’-6”, to cover just about any patio. To block lowangle sun, add a manual or motorized drop shade in the front bar of the awning.

4. ShadeTree Canopies

Imagine a pergola structure with rafters set on 48” or 60” centers with retractable ShadeTree® canopies set between or below the rafters. On

sunny days, you simply pull out the canopies, made from beautiful Sunbrella® woven acrylic fabric, to cover your deck or patio. They conveniently lock in place, although if the wind really picks up, the patented locks release to allow the canopies to safely stack up against your home. The canopies provide very effective sun protection when extended. But, your view to the sky can be wide open when the canopies are retracted. See all of these patio shading solutions at the Shade On Demand booth (#336-338) at the Spring Home and Garden Show, or visit our website at www. shadeondemand.com. Our showroom is open from 10 am to 5 pm weekdays at 1465 SW Knoll Avenue in Bend. Call 541-389-9983 to schedule an appointment with one of our professional staff. Sun when you want it, shade when you need it — that’s Shade on Demand! Home & Garden Show - 2015 Page 15

The Allure

of Bookscaping

When it comes to decorating a home, books aren’t just for reading! by Lauren Davis Baker, for The Bulletin Special Projects / photos by Kevin Prieto

Picture this: You walk into a new home. You’re dazzled by the high ceilings and the open layout. You notice the soft-toned couch with the colorful pillows, the framed art on the walls, the bowl of fake fruits on the counter. Then you catch sight Page 18 - Home & Garden Show - 2015

of a lamp on an end table — and a stack of books with your favorite novel visible. And suddenly you feel right at home. Like the clever seller who takes fresh-baked cookies from the oven just as buyers enter the room, books

can create a sense of home, a sense of place. A novel by the fireplace brings to mind cozy afternoons in a comfortable chair. A gourmet cookbook on a granite countertop suggests fine meals enjoyed with friends and family.

“Books can help to evoke a lifestyle,” said Drea DeRose of Complements Home Interiors in Bend, which is why she and other interior designers are using books in home staging, with a decorative technique dubbed bookscaping. When marketing a home, staging is the art of decorating a house to make it more appealing to buyers. Designers use just enough art, furniture and other accessories in staging to make a house feel welcoming and worth the asking price. Bookscaping can be an important part of the staging effort. When grouped and placed thoughtfully, books become art pieces. “You take an everyday item and make it look like more,” said DeRose. Rather than placing books in the usual vertical, bookshelf format, DeRose likes to mix horizontal and vertical stacks, thinking in terms of shape and sculpture. The way the books are arranged is as important as the books themselves, which may be chosen based on their color, size, or theme. “When you group everyday items like cookbooks or yearbooks, they become a piece of artwork,” DeRose said. “Something more than books.” Martha Murray of Martha Murray Design in Bend, incorporates objects with books, but emphasizes that part of what makes staged homes beautiful is the minimal amount of “stuff” on shelves and surfaces. “Less is more,” Murray said. “Otherwise you can’t see the things you love. Nothing stands out.” If you give bookscaping a try in your own home, give focus to clothbound books, which are more appealing than paperbacks. Use an odd

number of books when possible and mix objects such as pottery, sculpture or artwork in with books to create something eye-catching. “Place something on top of a stack of books to add interest,” Murray said. “If there’s space for beautiful coffee-table books, I may stack them horizontally on a table or bench,” Murray said. “Some books you want to display more prominently than on a bookcase.” It’s also fun to arrange books in unusual places, such as a windowsill or laundry room bench. DeRose likes

to place larger books on the floor. “Stacked next to a chair, larger books become more of a sculptural item,” she said. She also suggests adding height and visual interest to a lamp on an end table by showcasing it on top of artfully arranged books. In addition to their treasured content, these everyday objects have a beauty of their own. Try highlighting vintage books in their own special grouping. Or let your favorite children’s books add a whimsical element to a playroom or bedroom. “Books can be a timeless piece of art,” said DeRose. But when all is said and done, attaining a professionally staged look at home isn’t as easy as it may seem, and you don’t need it to be perfect. Incorporating books into a decor should reflect your sense of style and personal interests, while making your house more interesting and inviting. “Honestly, you have to play with it,” Murray said. “Stand back and look at it. Rearrange it until it looks good.”

Solar Light The Sun Catcher Helps You Light Up Your Life Some people catch and redirect the sun for a living. At least Brennan & Melody Morrow with co-owner Creed Seibel of Solar Light — Bend’s premier Solatube dealership — do. It’s not just a job, it’s a passion. The first time Brennan saw a dark room suddenly flooded with natural light after a Solatube had been installed, he was hooked. Brennan instinctively knew what science would later prove—change your light and you’ll change your life. The evidence about the profound impact that light has on our bodies and our minds is, well, profoundly enlightening. Studies have uncovered that aging eyes reduce the amount of sunlight that actually penetrates the lenses of our eyes. As a

No wonder so many of us wind up struggling with insomnia, as well as a host of other conditions like memory loss and depression which are aggravated by lack of sleep.

live and work in welllit environments not only feel happier, they’re healthier and even more productive. Worker productivity studies repeatedly prove that our concentration, short-term

“My passion for what Solatubes do continues to grow. I think they should be in all of our schools, in office buildings, in new construction, everywhere because they’re such an affordable way to reduce our dependence on energy.” result, by the age of 45, we’re getting on average just 50 percent of the photoreceptors needed to stimulate our circadian system, which essentially regulates our internal clocks. By age 75, the average person gets just 17 percent of needed light. Page 22 - Home & Garden Show - 2015

Natural light has also been proven to elevate our mood. People affected by SAD (seasonal affected disorder) experience everything from general fatigue or weight gain to feelings of irritability or even despair. The treatment? More light. Research reveals that people who

memory, performance and health all improve with high levels of daylight. Solatubes bring in so much light that they even diminish trip and fall accidents, a major health concern as we age. Solatubes are ever improving with new innovations—including the new smart LED system—

drive Brennan and Melody to share that family tradition with as many others as they can. With nine years of business under their belts, Solar Light has been a family affair since the beginning.. Melody runs the office and (wo)mans the phones, while Brennan takes care of all the graphic design for advertising and helps with the installations. Creed Seibel, partner and lead installer, joined the team about 1½ years ago, bringing an enthusiastic new energy. And of course, their two oldest sons (when not in school or playing sports), Keegan, 18, and Jevan, 16, are becoming quite the young installers with several Summers joining in the family business. This year you will even meet their youngest daughter, Inanna, at the shows helping to educate the community about the benefits of Solatubes. “My passion for what Solatubes do continues to grow,” says Melody. “I think they should be in all of our schools, in office buildings, in new construction, everywhere because they’re such an affordable way to reduce our dependence on energy.”

The beautification of you home is intimately related to the valuation of its architectural elements, the respect of its surroundings, and the expression of your personal tastes. Selecting the right colors that harmonize with those considerations will have

Budget Blinds of Central Oregon Energy-Efficient Window Treatments to Keep Homeowners Cool This Summer According to the Energy Information Administration, about 48 percent of energy consumption in homes comes from heating and cooling. Budget Blinds serving Central Oregon can help reduce a home’s energy consumption by installing energy-saving window treatments that provide effective insulation, offering increased protection against heat gain during the summer. Some of the best types of products for energy efficiency are:

Solar Shades

Available for interior or exterior windows, solar shades act as a shield against solar heat gain and gently filter and diffuse natural sunlight, block out harmful UV rays, and keep rooms cooler.

Cellular Shades

Designed with honeycomb-shaped pockets or “cells,” cellular shades create an accordion type effect, as

the open cells effectively trap air that is attempting to travel from one side to the other, enhancing a home’s energy efficiency by keeping air from escaping or entering.

Hardwood Shutters

The insulating design makes indoor spaces cooler in the summer, keeping rooms at an ideal temperature. Save on energy costs and prevent UV rays from shining through with the convenience of motorized, automated opening and closing for window coverings. Solar shades and cellular shades are optimum for motorization, and sensors in window coverings can be automated to close when the sun’s heat is most intense. Budget Blinds serving Central Oregon is launching its Hot Summer Trends Event which runs from May 1 through Aug. 2, 2015, and offers customers 25 percent off or more on energy efficient window coverings. Consumers can schedule

a complimentary in-home consultation, by visiting www.budgetblinds.com or calling 541-788-8444. Budget Blinds is also excited to announce our partnership with national nonprofit, Homes for Our Troops. Homes for Our Troops (HFOT) is a privately funded 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization building specially adapted, mortgagefree homes nationwide for the most severely injured Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of these Veterans are

multiple amputees, paraplegic, quadriplegic, or have suffered severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). These homes restore some of the freedom and independence the Veterans lost defending ours, and enable them to focus on their family, recovery, and re-building their lives. Since its inception in 2004, over 90 percent of donations to Homes for Our Troops has gone to directly support Veterans. Visit www. hfotusa.org

Simply Sustainable Gardening Tips that Preserve and Protect Resources. Sustainability is a concept that can be applied to many facets of life, and gardening is no exception. Sustainable gardening involves preserving and protecting resources, which can benefit us both in the present and in the future. Sustainability is especially applicable to gardening, and the following are a handful of ways green thumbers can embrace sustainability in their gardens. Choose to water more effectively. Oscillating sprinklers may harken today’s gardeners back to the carefree days of their childhoods when they would run through the

sprinklers in their parents’ yards. But such sprinklers can lose substantial amounts of water to evaporation. When designing an irrigation plan for your lawn and garden, use drip irrigation or soaker hoses to conserve water. Add mulch to flower and plant beds. Many a gardener has gone to bed with a beautiful garden only to return in the ensuing days and see flower and plant beds littered with weeds. Mulch is perhaps best known for helping flower and plant beds retain moisture, but mulch also prevents the growth of weeds. Develop a compost

pile. Compost is made up of decayed organic material, and it can be used as a fertilizer. Gardeners can make their own compost piles at home, providing valuable minerals and nutrients for their lawns, without having to rely on store-bought amendments that need to be produced, packaged and transported before they can make it onto the store. Choose native plants. A garden filled with exotic plants and flowers may be stunning, but unless those plants are native to where you live, that beauty is coming at a steep price. Non-native

plants are likely to need excessive watering and other less sustainable attention that native plants do not need. Plant with a plan. When planting trees around your property, plant them in locations that can reduce your reliance on air conditioning in the warmer months. You can go one step further, and plant deciduous trees that will shed their leaves when the weather gets cold, ensuring that sunlight you want to keep out in the summer can get in and warm up the house in the winter, reducing the amount of energy needed to heat your home.
