Ah, Summer!

Flip Flops, Sunshine and Beer What would summer in Bend be like without a fresh, crisp summer ale to enjoy around the campfire or the barbeque? Luckily for us in Central Oregon, we have an abundance of craft beers to choose from, all brewed here locally — taking a bit of the Central Oregon sunshine and bottling it up to enjoy during all the best summertime activities.

10 Barrel Brewing Summer Ale

This brew is so light and smooth, it’s actually available all year long. You can taste the craftsmanship in this easy drinking ale with a blend of Cascade and Sterling hops and finished with a touch of Honey malt to balance it out. This is a great introduction if you are new to the world of Craft Brewing. For established craft enthusiasts, 10 Barrel Summer Ale is a good reprieve from overly hopped and overly malty alternatives.

Bend Brewing Company Paulina Pale Ale

A light American Pale Ale with a smooth finish brewed right on the Deschutes River a few times during each summer. Perfect for a sunny Central Oregon day on this downtown brewer’s stellar patio, this amber-colored ale has a lasting beige head with a balanced citrus hop profile.

Boneyard Beer Wit Shack

This classic style Belgian witbier hits the palate with a light, crisp effervescence that quenches that summer thirst. Made with wheat, plus a bit of coriander and sweet orange peel, this smooth beverage has a low bitterness and pours an opaque white — just right for capturing the sunlight.

Cascade Lakes Brewing Paulina Lake Pilsner

This classic German style Pilsner is light straw in color and well-hopped with European noble hops. It is fermented to a low final gravity which leads to a beer with few residual sugars to create a dry crisp lager with higher hop-bitterness and aroma than your typical American Lager.

Deschutes Brewery Twilight Ale

The crisp effervescence of this highly sessionable ale is perfect to enjoy just as the sun sets during those extended summer evenings. This straw-colored ale has a vigorous hop essence and a subtle, wafer-like body that complements a unique blend of four hops and malts: Cara-Pils and Carastan malts with the late addition of whole flower Amarillo, Cascade and Tettnang hops. Make some magic happen with a beer that’s brewed just for the long, lazy days of summer.

www.theoldmill.com | the life we love

A traditional German-style Hefeweizen, this refreshing summer brew pours an inviting butterscotch yellow with a nice white head and good lacing. With a lively flavor that’s been described as malty with some citrus and fruit, the finish is dry and crisp — perfect solution for a hot summer day.

Three Creeks Brewing Company’s Golden Stitches Ale

This easy drinking, Summer Session Ale is made with pilsner malt to ensure a light, golden, effervescent body and a touch of Acidulated malt that adds a pleasant, crisp zest on the pallet. Blended with small amounts of Sterling and US Golding hops, the result delivers just the right balance for a delightful summer Quaffer.

McMenamin’s Copper Moon

This beer has a bit more malt quality and hop character than most other summer seasonals, giving rise to a refreshing, flavorful beer style. On top of that, all of the malted barley used in every batch of Copper Moon is organically grown and malted. The outcome is a smooth, flavorful summer pale ale.

2006: Old Mill District installs Rainbird Irrigation System - effectively regulating and preserving water resources • Temporary dog Park created on west side of the river

2007: Saxon’s Fine Jewelers placed 5th in America’s coolest stores, top 10 IN Store Magazine • Wilson Roundabout Art installed. Artist Andy Wachs & Erik Gerding • Phase II North End of Shops opened - employment of Old Mill District exceeds peak of mill’s employment

Brahms was at his most dramatic and passionate when he composed Symphony No. 4. Dudamel is joined by brothers Renaud and Gautier Capuçon for Brahms’ towering Double Concerto, Brahms’ final orchestral work. Renaud, a violinist and younger brother Gautier a cellist both enjoy flourishing concert careers and are in demand internationally playing with many of the world’s leading conductors and orchestras. NCM Fathom and the Los Angeles Philharmonic have partnered to bring specially selected performances LIVE from the Walt Disney Concert Hall to movie theatres nationwide. LA Phil LIVE is an immersive sight and sound experience, featuring full concert performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic led by its dynamic music director Gustavo Dudamel, broadcast live from Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE Friday, May 27 • 6 p.m. • $35 Death Cab for Cutie’s long train to popularity has its roots in Western Washington University, Bellingham, way back when in 1997. Death Cab for Cutie was well on its way musically when members began combining their love of The Smiths with the popular strains of Northwest college rock (soon to be more commonly known as indie rock) from the likes of Halobenders, Modest Mouse, and Built to Spill. Melodic guitar-based rock poured out of the three young men: Ben Gibbard, Chris Walla and Nick Harmer. Originally planned as just a way to take up time and have fun at college, the band’s debut and follow-up albums received unanimous critical acclaim. Their third and fourth albums were critical indie successes — so much so that Atlantic Records signed the band. With help from their new, larger record label, the band cracked radio airwaves via their fifth album, Plans, sixth album, Narrow Stairs, and a major hit single for the Twilight movie soundtrack. In May 2011, the band will release their seventh full-length album, Codes and Keys.

Jenny & Johnny will kick off this night of music. The pair first started working together in 2005 after being introduced by Conor Oberst. Jenny is also the lead singer for the band Rilo Kiley. During Jenny’s Acid Tongue tour in 2007 with Johnathan, the band cut the song “Carpetbaggers” with Elvis Costello. Costello was so inspired with the collaboration that he enlisted Lewis and Rice on his Momofuku album released in 2008. During that tour, Rice and Lewis began writing a batch of songs different from anything they had previously created. The material was fast, ultra-melodic and often blended both of their voices into one, creating a completely new sound. When the tour wrapped in Japan in August of 2009, Jenny and Johnny recorded these new tunes. The album, I’m Having Fun Now, was released in 2010.

June 12: The Chapmans

The Chapmans are truly a family bluegrass band. Their musical journey began in the early 1990s in Colorado when John Chapman won a statewide junior-division fiddle championship in his early teens. Inspired by his son’s interest in music, John’s father, Bill, took up the banjo, and the two started a bluegrass band with some family friends. Eventually John switched to guitar and sang lead vocals. When younger brothers Jeremy and Jason took up mandolin and bass respectively, a hobby turned into a full-time family passion.

from some major experiences he’s been through lately. The powerful lead single It Did closely mirrors Blaine’s own journey over the last three years — marrying his wife and welcoming their first child last year. Those events also influence Blaine’s performance of the album’s title cut Not Too Bad for a Good Old Boy and the playful Baby You Get Me. Blaine’s also working on establishing himself as a songwriter in Nashville. Blaine co-wrote I Gotta Get To You which is included on George Strait’s 2009 release, Twang. Blaine has toured with Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts and Kenny Chesney, putting him in front of country music’s biggest audiences in the past few years.

In 1998, the band jumped into the national spotlight when they won the International Bluegrass Band Championships. In 1999, they were nominated for Album of the Year by the Society for Bluegrass Music in America. The Chapman’s released Follow Me in 2001, which led to winning the emerging artist award from the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2002. In 2005, the band released the album Simple Man. Now based in Springfield, Mo., The Chapmans have been touring for more than two decades.

June 19: Blaine Larsen

July 3: MOsley WOtta

July 31: David Mayfield Parade

MOsley WOtta combines hip-hop, rap and poetry into their live performance as a full live band and also with solo performer Jason Graham. MOsley WOtta has played at numerous venues around town, including Bend Roots, and won Bend’s The Last Band Standing in July 2010. Jason’s quick lyrics, high energy and witty phrasing easily draw you in. Get ready to bounce up and down to the beat in the afternoon sun. We look forward to seeing MOsley WOtta on stage with newest band member Stephanie Slade, whose strong rock vocals are not to be missed and a great addition to the band’s sound. The band name is a play on words “mostly water,” and Jason is often heard saying from the stage, “I’m Mosley Wotta and so are you.”

David Mayfield brings energy, playfulness and great bluegrass songs to each performance. He’s the former bass player for Cadillac Sky and earned a Grammy nomination as the producer and engineer of a southern-gospel record in 2009. He’s had several appearances playing on the Grand Ole Opry stage with country singer Andy Griggs. While playing bass with his sister, Jessica Lea Mayfield, he met Seth and Scott Avett who invited him to join them on stage for performances at Bonnaroo and MerleFest in 2010. These numerous performances, including playing on NPR’s Mountain Stage, have earned him a growing reputation as a musician. The band is based out of Nashville.

July 17: The Greencards

The Greencards are part of the progressive bluegrass “newgrass” sound that draws from a wide variety of musical influences — Irish traditional music, gypsy, rock, folk and Latin sounds. The Greencards have toured extensively, including appearances at Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Austin City Limits, Lollapolooza and MerleFest. The Greencards toured with Dylan and Willie Nelson in 2005. They earned the Americana Music Award in 2006 for Emerging Artist of the Year and received Grammy nominations in 2008 and 2010 for Best Country Instrumental Performance. The band was formed in Austin in 2003 and was initially composed of two Australians, Kym Warner on mandolin and Carol Young on bass and vocals, and Englishman Eamon McLoughlin on fiddle. McLoughlin left the band in 2009 and was replaced by Tyler Andal, a fiddle player from Tennessee. Carl Miner, originally from Oregon, joined the group in May 2010, playing acoustic guitar. The Brick Album will be released in June 2011. The Greencards played the Sisters Folk Festival in September 2007.

July 24: Franchot Tone Franchot Tone is an Oregon-based singer-songwriter. His sound is a mix of vintage reggae and dub, poprock, funk and soul. His best-known work is as a member of the Culver City Dub Collective, the critically acclaimed band he co-founded with Adam Topol, best known for his work as Jack Johnson’s drummer.
