New Businesses join the Old Mill District Sweet Tooth Candy Shoppe will open in July and offer a large variety of candy as well as specialty Japanese candy and gift items. Central Oregon Community College COCC opens two new buildings this fall. The health careers building will house the growing programs in nursing, medical assisting, dental assisting, pharmacy technician, massage therapy and a new veterinary technician program. In addition, a new science center will open, to meet the demands in the much-needed science courses. www.cocc.edu Last year COCC opened the Jungers Culinary Institute, a stateof-the-art culinary education center and Elevation, a teaching lab/ restaurant serving dinner three nights a week. Oregon State University-Cascades OSU-Cascades Graduate & Research Center will open this fall for classes and will house the graduate teaching and counseling programs as well as administrative staff. The purchase was made possible thanks to a generous gift by former Bend City Mayor Allan Bruckner. OSU-Cascades plans to expand to a four-year university with a campus near the Old Mill District and a goal to serve 3,000 - 5,000 students by 2025. Founded in 2001, OSU-Cascades is the fastest growing campus in the Oregon University System. The university currently offers upper division and graduate classes to close to 800 students. Nearly 2,000 bachelor’s and master’s degrees have been awarded since 2001. Deschutes Dash and Splash & Dash The eighth annual Deschutes Dash is on Saturday-Sunday, July 14-15. This is a fine art festival not to be missed and this summer celebrates their fifth year in the Old Mill District. Works of art in the festival include mixed media, photography, jewelry, sculpture, ceramics, glass, print-making, wood, fiber art, drawing and painting.

The Quilt Walk is a self-guided walking tour of quilts on display in the Old Mill District July 6-23. We Are Augustines
We Are Augustines are an indie rock trio based in Brooklyn consisting of guitarist Billy McCarthy, bassist Eric Sanderson and drummer Rob Allen. Billy McCarthy has a brazen voice showing a range of emotion and energy with each song. The lyrical story-telling throughout their recent album Rise Ye Sunken Ships adds to the absorbing and resilient nature of the raw and heartfelt songs.

Kasey Anderson and the Honkies serve up welldeveloped songs and sharp-edged, introspective lyrics to their alt-country, blues and roots rock music. The band is anchored by Kasey’s thoughtful-yet-edgy lyrics and guitarist Andrew McKeag’s (Presidents of the United States of America) musical acrobatics. The band also features bassist Eric Corson (The Long Winters) and drummer Mike Musburger (The Posies).

Field Report is the creation of Chris Porterfield who has a wonderful rootsy twang in his voice and offers a slowburning take on contemporary folk. Chris was previously in DeYarmond Edison, which is best known as the former band of the members of Bon Iver and Megafaun.
Michael Franti & Spearhead Wednesday, August 22 • 6:30 p.m. $35 plus service fees Michael Franti & Spearhead will bring their blend of hiphop, funk, reggae, jazz and rock back to Bend for a night of much jumping up and down. Michael Franti & Spearhead are currently working on their eighth studio album, and Franti says it will be a bit of a sonic departure from previous Spearhead efforts. “This album is a lot harder and more aggressive,” Franti told Rolling Stone. “There are some songs that are just acoustic guitar and nothing else, but the ones that aren’t like that are louder and at times more punk rock, with dance beats to them.” While the band hasn’t decided on an album title yet, Franti said it will arrive
sometime in the fall, with a lead single dropping this summer.

Cajun roots fiddle player Amanda Shaw is known for her high energy and amazing fiddle playing. She has drawn record crowds at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival since she was 10 years old. Amanda Shaw is a powerful performer, composer and arranger. The New Orleans native is a pioneer of the new breed of young, roots-based musicians who have embraced both the traditional sounds of Louisiana and the pop sounds of the mainstream.

What can I bring with me? Please feel free to bring empty or sealed water bottles, binoculars, low-profile chairs, small, compact umbrellas (ponchos are preferred), and small, personal cameras (unless prohibited by show). We do not allow outside food or beverages inside the venue, but we do have delicious food and drink available on site. Children ages 2 and younger do not need a ticket to see one of the Bend Summer Concerts. Baby formula can be brought into the concert; however, strollers are not allowed in the venue.

The world famous Halloween Cyclocross Crusades will return to the Old Mill District and Deschutes Brewery on Friday-Sunday, October 2628. The inaugural Leadman Tri Bend will take place on Saturday, September 22. The main attraction for the weekend will include a swim voyage across Cultus Lake, a bike trek around Mount Bachelor and a run down the Deschutes River Trail. The weekend of events will also include open water swim races, a kid’s race, relay challenges and live music. The finish line is in Center Plaza in the Old Mill District by the footbridge. The West Side Parking lot will be used as the transition area for the cycling to running leg of the triathlon and the nearby grass will have an expo with vendors. Fermentation Celebration July 12 The Fermentation Celebration beer walk will take place on Thursday, July 12 in the Old Mill District from 5 to dry. A kick off to Oregon Craft Brewers Month, the event offers beer samples of our numerous local breweries at various shops and restaurants. Center Plaza will have live music by Boxcar Stringband from 5-7pm followed by a presentation by the Mayor and City Council at 7pm on the importance of our craft brewing industry to the city’s economy. Our breweries, old and new, provide hundreds of jobs, promote tourism, and play an important role in Bend’s economy. Prizes and the chance to win Ale Trail “Beer for a Year” will benefit the newly formed Central Oregon Brewers Guild. The Ninth Annual Bend Brewfest returns on Thursday-Saturday, Aug. 16-18, at the Les Schwab Amphitheater. The Bend Brewfest is a festival that focuses on tasting and enjoying lots of fine craft beers as well as great food. More than 90 distinct craft beers will be available for public tasting.
