Every year you blink and it seems the holidays are upon us. As we slide into the swirl of winter, festooned with plans, parties and to do lists that could line the walls, take a moment to distill the essence of the season and find magic. Recall the traditions and the experiences that dance to the surface of your memories. What did you do as a child that seemed so wondrous? The simplest things come to mind; playing in the snow, the smell of fresh apple pie baking in the oven, listening to older relatives telling funny and embarrassing stories, gooey marshmallows in rich hot chocolate after a crisp day, a crackling fire. Days off from school, family skiing adventures, tromping through the woods to find the perfect tree, dressing up to the see the Nutcracker, lighting candles and singing carols on Christmas Eve, the stillness of fresh snow and the anticipation of Christmas morning. May this year bring new experiences that become cherished memories. However you celebrate, we wish you and yours; a very Happy Holiday.

Café de Olla Spice Crater Cake For topping: 2 Tbsp. brown sugar, 1 Tbsp. flour, 1 Tbsp. butter, softened, 1/4 tsp. dehydrated orange peel, 1 tsp. Baker’s Brew Coffee Spice and 1/2 tsp. orange juice. For cake: 1 2/3 cups flour, 1/3 cup sugar, 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda, 2 Tbsp. Baker’s Brew Coffee Spice, 2 x eggs, 2/3 cup orange juice, 1/3 cup molasses, 1/3 cup vegetable oil and 1/4 cup sour cream. Directions: Mix all the topping ingredients together and place in refrigerator for 10-20 minutes to harden. Meanwhile, in a bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking soda and spice. Next, in a separate bowl, combine the eggs, orange juice, molasses, oil and sour cream. Stir the wet ingredients into the dry until just combined. Pour into a greased 8-9 inch round baking pan. Next, pinch small amounts of the topping onto to the top of the batter. Distribute evenly, leaving gaps between topping so the craters can form during baking. Lisa and Lori Lubbesmeyer blend their former disciplines as a printmaker and oil painter to create breathtaking fiber and acrylic paintings. In 1999 Lori and Lisa combined their studios in St. Paul, Minnesota when they established themselves as collaborative artists. “Our acrylic paintings are created through the same collaborative process as our fiber ‘paintings’. As we paint over each others’ work, we respond visually to what each twin has added, without plan or conversation, building layer on layer,” explained Lisa.
In 2001, the Lubbesmeyers received their first commission for the Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul. Their process for both public and private commissions is the same. The client is interviewed, locations are often visited and the artists return to the studio to work. It is with the clients understanding that they will not see the work of art in progress until the piece is completed. Lori described the process as, “this is where the magic happens” and that the client has to accept the mystery and be surprised by the end result. Subject matter of their fiber work has
ranged from the African Serengeti to the canals of Amsterdam to their own personal travel—a trip to Italy, a weekend in San Francisco or a road trip to eastern Oregon. It is the subtle yet saturated depth of color in the Lubbesmeyer’s interpretation of fields and skies, mountains and trees, oceans and city skylines that is truly breathtaking.
along with many other Oregon artists, will be part of this group show. Their gallery and working studio showcasing a range of fiber and acrylic paintings is located upstairs in the Old Mill District. www. lubbesmeyer.com

Our recognizable Bend emblem—on stickers, t-shirts and growlers—was created by the Bend Emblem Club (1913-1924). The club was organized and funded by William Cheney, a Seattle developer who enthusiastically promoted Bend’s commercial possibilities. The Bend Emblem Club organized dinners, dances and as well as a few wild escapades for potential investors. Members displayed the Bend emblem in the front windows of their shops, offices and newspaper ads to promote Bend. Members were encouraged to wear the Bend emblem on their clothing until Bend‘s population reached 100,000. This photo taken in 1927 captured the Fort Klamath-Crater Lake Ski Race — 42 mile course in rugged terrain with a 2800 foot elevation gain. In the picture are Nels Skjersaa (left) and Emil Nordeen (right) both men were ski pioneers in Central Oregon. Visit the Deschutes Historical Museum for more Bend history. www. deschuteshistory.org

Jubelale debuted as Deschutes Brewery’s first seasonal beer in 1988. Each year beer aficionados look forward to this festive winter ale. Dark and malty, layered flavors unwrap to reveal chicory and earth notes and a hoppy kick to finish. This year marks the 26th bottling of Jubelale, the first brew that Deschutes Brewery ever bottled. For 19 of those years, a different local or regional artist has been chosen to create an original work of art for the label. Over the years several artists from Tumalo Art Co. in the Old Mill District have been selected for the label. This year the label design and artwork comes from Bend artist, Avlis Leumas. The label shows a mysterious owl perched along a wintery Deschutes River. Leumas says, “My goal was to create a balance with opposites: as serene and quiet as the piece is, there is movement and activity everywhere.” Alvis started drawing again in 2012 (after a 20 year hiatus) when he took a COCC art class taught by Pat Clark at Atelier 6000. Alvis’ work was discovered by the Deschutes Brewery team at First Friday Art Walk last year and will be on display at The Loft in December and at Dojo in January. Cheers, Prost and Happy Holidays to Deschutes Brewery as we finish out the year celebrating their 25th Anniversary! www.deschutesbrewery.com

The importance of year-end giving is extremely important with charities reporting 40% of their annual contributions in the last few weeks of the year. What donors find most important when considering which charity to support is the charity’s overall financial health and how much of the donation will be spent on programs (76%). The charity’s level of accountability and transparency (ethics, good governance and disclosure practices) ranks 67%. A charity’s evidence of their effectiveness (61%), a donor’s familiarity with the charity (36%) and the executive director’s salary (31%) rounded out the list. The Tin Pan Alley art collection grows with four new works by local artists. Works are located in the City’s downtown parking garage and on side street Tin Pan Alley (off Minnesota).
Born Again Ghost by Megan McGinnis is an acrylic painting with gold leaf of a peacock which represents renewal in many cultures. Happy New Year Bend! Look for her work at the entrance to the parking garage (on Lava Road).
Other new works include Tangled by Taylor Rose, All Things Good by Katie Daisy and The Day We All Looked Up by Kaycee Anseth. Learn more about the Tin Pan Art Collection at www. visitbend.com
