It’s the time of year where memories are created — where residents and visitors alike come together to celebrate the season of unity.

Sisters Tree Lighting

Local holiday festivities will be kicked off at the Tree Lighting Ceremony put on by the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce on Friday, Nov. 23, the day after Thanksgiving, at 5:30 p.m. at Barclay Park. “It’s the first event where the whole community comes out to celebrate,” said Jeri Bruckmann, events director for the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce. 2 | Sisters Magazine | Town of Tiny Lights | 2012

A community food drive will again be held at the lighting. People are encouraged to bring a canned or non-perishable food item that will be donated to the local food bank. This year’s tree has been donated by Deschutes Land Trust, and the event will also feature Hoodoo’s Hodag, who will be on site before the ceremony giving out twofor-one ticket vouchers.

Christmas Parade

The Chamber’s annual Christmas Parade will also feature the Hodag, who will be passing out a limited number of free Hoodoo Autobahn passes following the parade the next day. “This year’s theme is ‘Star Spangled Christmas’,” said Buckmann. “We’re honoring our service men and

women this season.” Thousands of people fill Sisters’ streets for the 45minute event, which is followed by cookies and one-onone time with Santa at the Chamber (291 E Main Ave.). Hot chocolate and coffee will be provided by Bright Spot Coffee.

A Black Butte Christmas

If you’re looking for more than just milk and cookies, Black Butte Ranch has been the traditional spot for the Sisters community to have their special holiday meals. This year, Breakfast with Santa will be returning on Saturday and Sunday, December 22 and 23. A full breakfast buffet with French toast, freshly scrambled eggs, mountains of spiced sausage and more will be available while kids (and the young at heart) are invited to sit on Santa’s lap to make sure he knows what you

want for Christmas. Cookies and candy canes will be handed out, and the entire family will be invited to go on the ranch’s famously traditional carriage rides. Specially crafted meals are also being prepared and offered on Christmas Day and New Years Eve, and even a Winter Solstice Wine Dinner will be featured with wine from Basel Cellars Estate Winery. “There’s so much activity going on around here, especially in the Aspen Lodge,” said Dean Ecker, director of food and beverage for Black Butte Ranch. Dean is already planning the house-smoked holiday salmon and bourbon-honey glazed hams along with traditional roasted turkeys and

prime rib. “There are also going to be some holiday themed specials along with the regular lodge menu,” he added. Still, food is not the only draw for Black Butte Ranch visitors. They will also be treated to live music at the lodge every Friday as well as caroling on Saturday and Sunday,

Gingerbread House Trail

Another event that started at Black Butte Ranch but has since moved into town and the surrounding areas is the Gingerbread House Trail. Now hosted by the Sisters Habitat for Humanity, the trail is in its seventh year and is growing to include more sites each year. “When Black Butte Ranch started it, they filled a room with gingerbread houses. You bought a lot to place your house on, the larger the house, the larger the lot you needed to buy,” said Marie Clasen, program manager for the Sisters’ Habitat. But since then, the event’s been made completely free for anyone to participate. “People call all the time and ask, ‘Are you doing the Gingerbread Trail again?’” said Clasen. Groups and businesses from all over town put their creative juices to work each year. Making the elaborate sugary structures has now become a tradition around town. For years, Sisters Christian Academy has placed their Christmas confection at Paulina Springs Books on West Hood Street. “We love it when they do it for us,” said Amanda MacNaughton, employee at Paulina Springs. “It’s always fun to see what they come up with.” On the other hand, employees at the Sisters branch of U.S. bank set up a gingerbread house-making workshop in the bank’s break room.

‘Santa’s Village’ a Winter Wonderland in Sisters Local artisans to showcase and sell arts, crafts and food.

by Sondra Holtzman, for The Bulletin Special Projects Mark your calendars for the 7th Annual Holiday Open House, a juried event at Sisters Art Works that features a diverse mix of artists and craftspeople selling their wares to the public. The event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. What began back in 2005 as a small event with ten-

ants of Sisters Art Works and a few invited artists has evolved to filling additional common spaces with intriguing handmade wares and delicious food items. The popular event also features pet photos with Santa, a fundraiser for the Furry Friends Foundation. “We try to make the Holiday Open House a community-wide event here in Sisters, including various fundraisers and the opportunity to share the spirit of the season in a variety of different ways,” said founder and Sisters artist Kathy Deggendorfer. “A $10 donation will enable you and your pet to be photographed with Santa, and all monies raised go to Furry Friends, the pet food bank in Sisters.” Fine art and crafts range in scope from custom holiday wreathes, swags and table décor made out of fresh, locally gathered greenery to hand-blown glass, recycled and repurposed jewelry, quilted textile items and found-object folk art. “People love to come to Sisters to shop for holiday gifts here at Sisters Art Works,” said Deggendorfer. “We jury in the artists so we always get quality artwork with lots of variety. The atmosphere is truly one of community spirit, with a plethora of animals, Santa, delicious holiday foods and decorating items. It kicks even the most grumpy Grinch into gear.” Participating artists include Kit Stafford, Tonye Phillips, Karen Ellis, Paul Alan Bennett, Tracy Curtis/Balokai, Dawn Mead, Kathy Deggendorfer, Laurence Dyer, Leart Jett,

Justine Gibb, Jen Ayward, Cher Sullivan, Azonetta Adams, Moonbeam Glassworks, Justy’s Jellies, Janet Zuelke and Wendy Vernon. One of the goals of the Holiday Open House is to have plenty of consumable gifts, perfect for taking to holiday parties as hostess gifts that will not only be appreciated, but quickly gobbled up. According to Deggendorfer, the Sisters Art Works building is decorated with trees that are donated from the Deschutes Land Trust and collected as part of their program to thin white fir on the Metolious Land Preserve. The end result is a wonderland with a miniature forest surrounding a jolly Santa. Another facet of the Holiday Open House is the Holiday Plates and Platters. Local artists gather at Kibak Tile in Redmond to glaze handmade pieces of art with amazing images which are then fired, reglazed and brought to Sisters Art Works to be hung as a collection for the Open House. These pieces can be purchased on the spot for $100 each with the proceeds going to the Sisters Kiwanis Food Bank. “We’ve been having so much fun with this the last few years,” said Deggendorfer. “People love their dogs, cats, geese, llamas and horses. They line up out front of Sisters Art Works and the frivolity begins. And it’s all for a good cause.” Patrons have the opportunity to get prints as well as a CD with their images of their pets with Santa, which can be picked up the following week at Sisters Feed. Sisters loves its Furry Friends, feeding pets in need of assistance Winter in Central Oregon can bring special challenges for our four-legged friends. Not all pets in need are homeless — some just needed a helping paw. The Nugget’s Furry Friends Holiday Pet Food Drive began in 1992 in conjunction with the Sisters Kiwanis holiday food basket program and the Sisters-Camp Sherman RFPD gift and toy drive. During the winter holidays, an enormous food drive is conducted especially for pets, where food, toys and gifts are collected through

the local fire department and the Sisters Kiwanis Food Share program. Over the past 21 years, Furry Friends has grown consistently, feeding nearly 600 pets over the holiday season. In the spring of this year, the Nugget’s Furry Friends food drive has developed into the Furry Friends Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. “It began funding a much-needed yearround pet food bank in Sisters,” said food drive organizer Kiki Dolson. “Furry Friends offers pet food assistance, spay/neuter sponsorships

through Bend Spay & Neuter, and emergency medical help in the Sisters area. And with the new tax designation, cash donations are now tax deductible.” According to Dolson, the holiday food drive is the biggest push of the year, with individuals donating cash and bags of dry pet food. Dry dog and cat food can be dropped off at The Nugget Newspaper, 442 E. Main Avenue in Sisters, until Wednesday, Dec. 19. Food can be purchased at Sisters Feed & Supply and can also be delivered. Additionally,

tax-deductible cash donations are especially helpful, allowing target purchasing of much need items, including specialty foods for allergic animals and food for senior pets, puppies and kittens. Checks can be dropped off at The Nugget or mailed to Furry Friends Foundation, PO Box 698, Sisters, Oregon 97759. Donations can also be made online at the website. New public art installation unveiled in Sisters’ Barclay Park

In November, Sisters welcomed a 10-foot tall bronze heron into the heart of town — a creature that looks ready to lift off from its basalt column in Barclay Park amid natural plantings and a pond. The sculpture was created by local artist Danae Bennett Miller in honor of Elizabeth Dasch, a former resident of Black Butte Ranch and Sisters who passed away in 2009. The heron was created from about 70 pieces of bronze welded together around a stainless steel skeleton. Miller uses the lost wax method for her sculptures. First, she creates the pieces in wax, has them cast in bronze and then reassembles them together. She completed the artwork by selecting a basalt column for the heron’s base and another rock to serve as a bench. “Sisters has a lot of connection with nature and water. So when I look at it, I’m so happy that it fits with its environment,” said Miller. Miller said she used four different types of wax melted at various temperatures to create the textures reminiscent of flowing water. Miller, a long-time Central Oregon artist, is known for her large bronze sculptures, including three in Bend’s public spaces. On Newport Avenue, cars circle a roundabout featuring her larger-than-life-sized horse

traversing a rock trail. Miller is a member of the collective gallery Tumalo Art Company in Bend’s Old Mill District where she shows her smaller sculptures and prints. She has been featured on OPB’s “Oregon Art Beat.” Elizabeth Dasch’s three grown children donated $25,000 for the sculpture. Dasch enjoyed painting, especially wild flowers. Her children remember she brought watercolors on family camping trips along the Metolius River. Dasch, who died at age 97, was one of the artists who participated in Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects at Timberline Lodge. Her contribution is a botanical watercolor of a Mt. Hood lily. Dasch’s mother, Julia Hoffman, founded the Arts and Crafts Society of Portland, now named the Oregon College of Art and Craft. Additional funds for the sculpture came from Dasch’s friends, the Roundhouse Foundation, and The City of Sisters. “We think that a vibrant arts community enhances the business community, too said Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce Director Erin Borla. “It’s one more reason for businesses to locate here, and it adds to Sisters’ appeal as a place to hold events which benefit our restaurants, lodging establishments and merchants.” The Chamber is holding a dedication on Saturday, Dec. 8 to celebrate this newest addition to the city’s public art collection.

pending), and throughout the season, annual events like the New Year’s Eve Party and Winter Carnival promise to be bigger and better than ever. But first, a little history on Central Oregon’s favorite local mountain ski area: Hoodoo was built in 1938 under the

direction of Ed Thurston of Bend. While Thurston’s group of investors originally hoped for a resort on Three Fingered Jack, they could not raise enough funds to build a road. Hoodoo Ski Bowl Developers bought it in the 1960s and built the Manzanita Chair, but a major overhaul did not come until 1999, when Chuck Shepard of Eugene bought it and built the Hodag chair lift, replaced a few double chairs with quads, and built a new lodge and the Autobahn Tubing Park. Today, Hoodoo is a well-loved destination for both Central Oregon locals and skiers and riders from Salem, Eugene and Portland looking for a mountain with a more intimate and lowkey feel than its big brother to the south. It doesn’t hurt that Hoodoo is also an hour closer to the valley. Lifts access 806 acres with 1,036 feet of vertical, and Hoodoo also has miles of Nordic trails with views of

the Three Sisters. Hoodoo is hosting this year’s tree lighting ceremony in downtown Sisters on Friday, Nov. 23 at 5:30 p.m. in Barclay Park. After that, the Hoodoo crew will lead the gathering down to Three Creeks Brewery for the release of a special brew that was made to celebrate Hoodoo’s 75th Anniversary. Meet at Three Creeks at 6 p.m. to try the Hodag Cascadian Dark Ale brewed with Crystal, Bravo and Columbus hops. Cheers! Ring in 2013 at Hoodoo this New Year’s Eve and enjoy a 25-minute fireworks display at midnight, live music and the traditional torch light parade. A special dinner menu will also be offered in the lodge that evening. Free-heelers unite on Sunday, Jan. 13 for TeleFest: demo gear, join a Tele-Tour Group, and enter to win contests like the Best Big Air competition, Best Skier Award, and the Uphill-Downhill Race.

Lessons and clinics will be offered at discounted rates, and throughout the day, Scandinavian music will take over the speakers on the mountain, igniting the Viking within. Winter Carnival (on Saturday, Feb. 9 this year) is a celebration of winter recreation in the Northwest. Activities will run throughout the day and include ax throwing booth, frisbee golf, musical chairs, a three-legged obstacle race, a team tube race, a hula-hoop contest, a Hoodoo employee snow sculpture contest, bingo, and a special dinner menu in the lodge. One of the most popular highlights of the day is the Dummy Downhill contest at 3 p.m. where contestants dress up dummies, attach them to skis or sleds and send them down a ramp. The one that makes it the farthest wins! The dummy crashes are said to be “stunning.”

Live music and a bonfire will light up the scene at the lodge at 4:30 p.m., and be sure to stick around for the annual torchlight descent at 9 p.m. and fireworks at 9:15 p.m. The lifts will run all day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with night skiing on select runs until 8:30 p.m. Other dates to mark on

the calendar are the Rodeo Day on Saturday, March 30, where attendees can ride a mechanical bull and enter the Annual Hoodoo Chili Cook-Off. Snowbiking races and demos are scheduled for Saturday, April 6. The end of the season Spring Fling is scheduled for Saturday, April 13, and skiers and riders can look forward to pond skimming, ultra-cross races, prizes and beautiful spring weather. Whether you regularly hit the slopes at Hoodoo ski area, or are curious to give it a try this ski season, Hoodoo offers a wide range of events and entertainment that will suit all ages and abilities. Enjoy fireworks during the New Year’s Celebration, dress up a dummy during Winter Carnival, or skim across the pond yourself at Spring Fling. One thing is for sure, Hoodoo’s 75th season has something for the whole family.
