World-class Orchestral Music in Sunriver and Bend | Aug. 2-19

Sunriver Music Festival 38th Annual

“America the Beautiful” is the theme for the Sunriver Music Festival’s 38th season. The festival concerts run from Aug. 7-19, with two concerts in Bend and five concerts in Sunriver. The Sunriver Music Festival’s Artistic Director and Conductor George Hanson will lead the world class Festival Orchestra in four classical concerts, a pops concert and a family concert. The 38th season also includes a solo piano concert plus free orchestra rehearsals, a piano master class and the annual Festival Faire dinner and auction fundraiser. Maestro George Hanson selected the America the Beautiful theme with the sub-theme “something old, something new, something red, white and blue.” “Each of the seven summer festival concerts will include classical favorites from Schumann, Beethoven, Haydn and Mendelssohn plus a nice assortment of music from more contemporary composers, such as Copland and Bernstein,” explained Hanson. “We are also including two new world premiers by composers Heather Schmidt and C.F. Kip Winger.

“The patriotic theme will run throughout the entire concert series and include well-loved music that expresses the composers’ love for their homelands. We’ve selected music from Austria, Germany, Italy, the U.K., Czech Republic and the U.S.” Sean Chen, the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Crystal Medalist, is back by popular demand. The first American to place as a finalist since 1997, Chen won fans with his “exceptional ability to connect with an audience combined with an easy virtuosity,” according to The Huffington Post Chen will perform a solo concert on Monday, Aug. 17, perform the Mendelssohn Piano Concerto No.1 with the Festival Orchestra on Wed, Aug. 19, and he will instruct a Piano Master Class on Tuesday, Aug. 18. Concert tickets are on sale now. All festival concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices range from $35 to $70. The Family Concert will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 10 at the Sunriver Resort Great Hall. Family Concert tickets are $10 for

Join us at the John Gray amphitheater July 27 for a special evening “Down by the Riverside” featuring The Blind Boys of Alabama and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Tickets are $35, all seating is general admission. For additional information and tick tickets, please visit www.bendticket.com Since its inception in 1977, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band has entertained audiences with a combination of New Orleans Jazz and what they call “Big ol’ musical gumbo.”

From their inception in the 1930s, The Blind Boys of Alabama have turned their blindness into their chief selling point, and in fact, all members of the group except one are blind. They began singing when all were students, and five Grammys later, they are still going strong.

Newberry Volcanic Monument 25 Years of

In 1990 Newberry National Volcanic Monument was created by an act of the 101st Congress, and signed into law by President George H. W. Bush. More than 54,000 acres were set aside and the area was designated a national treasure. Located on the Deschutes National Forest, the Monument is defined by the Newberry Caldera at the top of Newberry Volcano and a wide swath of landscape flowing down the northwest flank of the volcano 4,000 feet to the Deschutes River. Containing the widest variety of volcanic features of any national park or monument, Newberry includes numerous wonders such as the Big Obsidian Flow, Lava Butte, Lava Cast Forest, Lava River Cave, Paulina Falls, Paulina Peak and two caldera lakes. Newberry Volcano has been a special place to changing communities of people for 10,000 years. Its natural history is still being written by geologists researching and studying its numerous obsidian flows, vents, pumice cones, and hidden pockets of magma. Its cultural history is constantly being told and retold by the discovery of artifacts used for hunting and trading throughout the area. Hunters and gatherers still abound in the form of fishermen

pulling kokanee, brown trout, rainbow trout, and Atlantic salmon from the two lakes found in the caldera. A new breed of explorer continues to traverse this volcanic landscape on trails that follow shorelines, cross fields of obsidian, and climb to the caldera rim. Each winter draws adventure seekers who glide across the snow-covered terrain on cross-country skis or snowmobiles. This volcanic sleeping giant continues to command respect from those who come to visit and especially from those who want to preserve and protect this place for future generations. Please join us in celebration of this remarkable monument. Choose from the wide variety of organized events spanning from June 2015 to June 2016. Set out on your own, or with a guide to engage with these Volcanic Wonders. See the sights, explore the caldera and learn about Central Oregon’s volcanic past! For more information about the Monument or 25th Anniversary Celebration events, visit www.discoveryourforest.org or stop by or call the Lava Lands Visitor Center 541-593-2421, or the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District office, 541-3834000.

6th Annual Sunriver Art Faire August 7, 8 & 9 Saturday Night Street Dance In The Village

Art Faire Artists with Heart Sunriver

The Village at Sunriver has become home to one of the area’s premier summer art events. Don’t miss the sixth annual Sunriver Art Fair, August 7 -9. Sponsored by the Sunriver Women’s Club (SRWC), Faire attendance has continued to rise and more than 10,000 visitors in 2014 supported not only the Faire but the community as a whole. The Faire showcases 60+ artists displaying and selling their fine arts and crafts. The work is juried from artist applications, the majority from Oregon and Washington. The medium for the art may include ceramics, glass, jewelry, painting, photography, sculpture, textiles, woodworking and mixed media. This year it looks like there will be a significant number of new artists who are interested in showing at the Faire. In addition to the juried art, there will be live professional entertainment all three days, an art center for young

artists to try out their skills, and food for purchase in the Village. Last year 200 children left the Faire with handmade art. Special events will include a pancake breakfast and the ever-popular Saturd ay night street dance in the Village, 7 -9:30 p.m. featuring the Klassixs Ayre Band. Over the last four years, the SRWC (a nonprofit corporation established in 1974) has distributed more than $150,000 to nonprofit community agencies that meet the basic needs (i.e., shelter, health, food, clothing and education) of families and children residing in the Three Rivers and South Deschutes County area. Hours are 10 a.m. -6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. -4 p.m. For more information call 877-2692580 or viist www.sunriverartfaire.com

EVENTS & RECREATION LA PINE COOP AND GARDEN TOUR

Saturday, Aug. 8, 9 a.m. -3 p.m. & Sunday, Aug. 9, Noon -4 p.m. | Throughout La Pine Once again, the Little Deschutes Grange in La Pine is organizing the Chicken Coop, Garden, and Greenhouse Tour!. We invite you to join us and learn the ways our intrepid gardeners have found to produce food locally, despite severe challenges.

Unlike the Western side of the state, where one can throw a seed into the ground and grow just about anything, Central Oregon is the High Desert. Our “soil is mostly volcanic ash, practically devoid of nutrients. It can, and often does, freeze any night of the year. So, Central Oregonians can be forgiven for thinking that raising vegetables in their backyards was impossible. Our tour has opened their eyes. We have about 20 host sites, and this year we will hold the tour for two days, featuring half on Saturday and the other half on Sunday. Last year we raised close to $4,000 and split it with our local Habitat for Humanity Re-store. This year we are hoping to do even better.

READING & THE ARTS SIP & PAINT

June 12, July 21 & September 15 | 4 -6 p.m. | Outside the Sunriver Artists Gallery | $45 The latest craze of mixing painting, wine & socializing in a fun atmosphere has been a favorite past time in Sunriver for several years. Bonnie Junell, a professional artist whose art hangs in the Artist Gallery has been teaching her Sip & Paint classes for the past 4 years. For many painters it is the first time they have experienced painting in oil. Junell says her classes are not just about the painting you leave with, but the experience you get in the process of creating your own unique painting while connecting with other Sunriver locals and having fun! Classes are kept small with just six -12 painters, so Junell has time to demonstrate and guide artists through the step-by-step process. Painting is a great way to release tension and show your creative side. Sip & Paint offers the perfect way to mix painting, friends, and drinks for a memorable evening. No experience is needed, and all supplies are included.
