"That will allow a little more creativity with tee placement on that hole," says Louis Bennett, head professional at Broken Top. In addition, the club also added to its back nine two sets of short, family tee boxes, something that had already been completed on the course's front nine, Bennett says.

The club has also drained the pond off the left side of the fourth fairway and replaced it with a patch of wild flowers, says Dan Ostrin, Lost Tracks' new head professionaL The idea is "to allow more playability for the shorter hitters and beginners," Ostrin says. The resort has reconstructed four more greens on its Woodlands course, continuing a project to replace the turf on all 18 greens with a hardy strain of bentgrass, says Josh Willis, the Crosswater club manager, who helps oversee all four Sunriver courses. This season, holes No. 5 through 8 were replaced, bringing the total number of new greens to 14 (holes 5-18). "We will reconstruct the remaining four holes in 2014, which will allow us to have two courses(Crosswater Club and Woodlands) to pure Tl bentgrass," Willis says. In cooperation with the Oregon Golf Association, Sunriver has also created forward tees at all of its courses as part of golf's Tee it Forward initiative. These gold tees are a blend of the resort's white and red tees, Willis says. In addition, Sunriver has started to repair the cart paths on all its courses. — Reporter: 541-617-7868, zhall®bendbulletin.com

dld. That might sound surprising from a guy who makes a living writing about the sport. But the decline does not stem from a lack of desire. Truth be told, there are few places I would rather be than strolling along a fairway at one of Central Oregon's golf gems. Life has intervened, though. After the birth of my daughter two years ago I became just like any other dad: constantly trying to find the right balance between work and family life. Like so many others have discov-

ered, that balance often comes at the cost of a five-hour round of golf. In a lot of ways it is someone like me who has perplexed the golf industry: Just how does the game lure timecrunched players back to the course'? It is a tough question. But any answer has to start w ith the pace of play — and that can be a complicated issue. Contrary to popular belief, slow pace of play is not always a player's fault. Other factors contribute, including the difficulty of a course's design. (PGA Tour-caliber Crosswater will always take longer to play than much shorter Crooked River Ranch, for instance.) But a golfer can control only so much. And there are ways we can all speed it up, which should help all of us enjoy the game more this golf season.

Many golfers spend far more time than is needed lining up their putts. Do away w i t h " h o nors." W hich player in the group hits first matters in the Masters. But in a normal round of recreational golf, if a golfer is ready to hit and the area ahead is clear, by gosh, take the shot. And once you are in the fairway, instead of watching your friend take a shot, go to your ball and start thinking about your own. • Get a tiny bit lax on the rules. JUNIOR GOLF

GOLF SURVEY

The Central OregonJunior Golf Association isset to offer a full slate of tournaments By Zack Hall The Bulletin

Finding venues to host all of the Central Oregon Junior Golf Association's tournaments each year can be a challenge. But this season, for the first time in recent memory, COJGA is expected to have a full complement of eight weekly tournaments, held each Monday beginning June 17, in addition to the season-end-

5EagleCrestResort Resort Course: The oldest of the three courses at Eagle Crest is for the most part a position golf course, with tight fairways and small greens. The difficult 481-yard, par-5 second hole (pictured above) features a narrow fairway that rests at the bottom of a small, juniper-lined canyon, and it takes a sharp right turn toward the green about 350 yards from the tee box.

Ridge Course:Aggressive golf is rewarded at this relatively open layout. Ridge, which is not a particularly long track, is loosely lined with juniper trees and has plenty of rough to work with. The downhill190-yard 12th hole is a true beauty. On a clear day, players are greeted at the tee box by unobstructed views of Mount Jefferson and Mount Hood.

• Three years after the departure of the ChampionsTour from Crosswater Club, the PGA ProfessionalNational Championshipshinesa spotlight on Central Oregonagain By Zack Hall The Bulletin

Sunriver Resort is no stranger to golf's limelight. But it has been a while since Sunriver'sCrosswater Club has hosted a golf tournament significant enough to attract national television exposure. That will change in June when Sunriver hosts the 46th PGA Professional N ational Championship, w h ich w i l l bring together 312 of the nation's best club professionals for a chance to qualify for the 2013 PGA Championship. The tournament — which Crosswater also hosted in 2001 and 2007 — will be televised live on the Golf Channel, a welcome chancefor Sunriver to bask under the bright lights of national television for the first time since the Champions Tour

moved The Tradition from Sunriver to Alabama after 2010. "You can't afford that amount of marketing on a channel like the Golf Channel," says Scott Ellender, the resort's director of lodge operations. "That is one of the lucrative aspects of this event ... it puts us on the Golf Channel for four consecutive days." The stakes will be high for the golfers in the field, which is scheduled to include a local entry: Bend's Jerrel Grow, a professional at Pronghorn Club who moved to Central Oregon just last summer. The top 20 golfers after 72 holes at the National Championship — which will be played June 23 through June 26 — advance to play at the PGA Championship in August at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y.

Many players in the field are accustomed to such pressures. About a quarter of them will have some PGA Tour experience, estimates Josh Willis, the head professional at Crosswater and an organizerforthe 2007 event. While the N ational Championship lacks the household names of the highest levels of pro golf, such experience speaks to the caliber of golfers who will be playing in this tournament, Willis says. "It's definitely not the PGA Tour," says Willis. "But there are a group of individuals in this field of 312 which all have played on the PGA Tour. So the quality is there. I just wouldn't say it is in all 312

players." Hosting the National Championship will be no small chore for Sunriver.

From previous page With such a large field, Sunriver will utilize its Meadows course in addition to Crosswater for the tournament's first two rounds. The field will be cut after the second round, leaving the final two rounds to Crosswater. Willis says the vast field means that Sunriver's organizational efforts will be even greater than for The Tradition, a major championship on the Champions Tour that attracted a limited field of 60 to 70 of pro golf's best senior golfers to Crosswater each year from 2007 through 2010. "The energy that will go into this event, it's far greater than a Jeld-Wen Tradition," Willis says. "You can imagine what that

Spectators react during the PGA Professional National Championship held at Sunriver's Crosswater Club in 2007.

(having more than 300 players) is going to do, not only from a guest presence around our resort, but just simply the logistics behind the event itself." That includes course setup. Willis expects the courses to be firmer and faster than normal, but it will not quite be The Tradition. Crosswater's rough will be grown to some 3 to 4 inches and its greens will run between an 11 and 12 on the Stimpmeter, respectively shorter and slowerthan the course was set up for The Tradition, Ellender adds. "One of the things that the PGA of America prides itself in is they don't want to put the course in jeopardy and they won't push the greens in particular to the brink that

the (PGA) Tour maybe might," Ellender says. "Certainly the greens are going to be mowed extra and rolled extra and be firm and fast, but they're not going to take them to the brink of jeopardy — which is great." For spectators, who will be admitted free, Crosswater will look the part of a pro golf venue, including ropes outlining each hole. The course will not have the grandstands and corporate hospitality suites of The Tradition, which is a greater spectator attraction than the National Championship. That is fine with Sunriver, which welcomes the attention without inconvenienc-

a

ing Crosswater'smembership nearly as much as a PGA tour-caliber event. Perhaps that is why Sunriver feels fortunate to have the National Championship return. "Because of the great product we have in our course and our facilities that we have, and having hosted this event for years, we're a very attractive resort for the PGA," Willis says. "We've built a great relationship with them. We're fortunate, they want to continue to come back." — Reporter:541-617-7868, zhall@bendbulletin.com
