STEWART LEE
IF YOU PREFER A MILDER COMEDIAN, PLEASE ASK FOR ONE! Writer, director and comedian, Stewart Lee returns to the live circuit with a new show which begins in a High Street coffee chain and ends in a pear cider which is 100% disappointment. Expect some punchy stuff near the top; inexplicable hostility towards relatively innocuous figures; silences and repetition; sudden and/or gradual shifts in tone, velocity and volume; the possibility of failure and a quasi-serious bit at the end. This tour follows his acclaimed BBC TV series Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle. “The funniest, most cliché-free comedian on the circuit” Ricky Gervais

It’s the technical rehearsal for a touring production of Nothing On, a classic British Farce, and tempers amongst our company of theatrical troupers are fraying. The director is juggling simultaneous affairs, the leading lady can’t remember her lines, the veteran actor is hitting the bottle, the stage manager is dead on his feet and, to top it all, the matinée idol is worried about his motivation. By the time the tour reaches Ashton Under Lyme open warfare has broken out backstage and when we reach the touring graveyard which is Stockton on Tees anything could go wrong – and everything does. 1982 Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy of the Year and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Comedy.

FOREVER IN YOUR DEBT A band rolls into town. Teetering on the edge of fiscal failure, their woeful stories of debt and despair weave cautionary tales that pull on our heartstrings and prick our conscience. THE MINISTRY OF FEAR By Graham Greene
When Arthur Rowe bumbles into a garden fête during the Blitz he’s haunted by his past and innocent of his future. But from the moment he enters Mrs Bellairs’ fortune-teller’s tent he trips into a hell of corruption and betrayal where he’s way, way out of his depth. With a powerful whiff of Hitchcock and echoes of film noir classic The Third Man, The Ministry of Fear is both taut espionage thriller and unnerving portrait of a mind in free fall. Renowned for creating exciting and imaginative work, Theatre Alibi brings its unique style to Graham Greene’s surreal masterpiece. “One of Britain’s most inventive companies” The Guardian

Teatro Kismet (Italy) presents
THE MERMAID PRINCESS Written and directed by Teresa Ludovico Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid Once upon a time, in the depths of the ocean, a mermaid princess is singing, and a young prince is drowning... she saves him... he kisses her... I love you, you love me... the mermaid exchanges her tail and sublime voice for two legs, but the prince, alas, marries another!
The Mermaid Princess is a captivating new adaptation of Andersen’s The Little Mermaid; a haunting tale of a young mermaid who sacrifices all for love. Combining music, dance, physical performances and ravishing costumes, Kismet’s simply staged and brilliantly inventive style will transport you from a shipwreck in the depths of the ocean to a prince’s castle, from a sea witch’s cavern to a cloud of sea mist lifting to the skies. Thrilling, sensual and unforgettable theatre guaranteed to capture the imagination of both children and adults alike. “Teatro Kismet is a wonderful Italian company that constantly creates visually ravishing work for family audiences... The result is work that is full of wonder and doesn’t patronise the audience.” The Guardian

A New Wolsey Theatre/Oldham Coliseum co-production in association with Anvil Arts
By Simon Moore and Jane Prowse Directed by Peter Rowe For anyone who has ever dreamed... Up On The Roof is a poignant and affectionate musical comedy which celebrates the enduring power of friendship. It is 1975 and five students at Hull University are up on the roof of their student digs for the last meeting of ‘The Roof Club’ - their a capella singing group who perform doo-wop covers. In between the songs they reveal their hopes, dreams and aspirations for the lives they are about to embark upon. The next ten years sees how their individual journeys, successes and failures, are reflected in the changing relationships within this tight knit group of friends. Whatever the tensions within the group, they disappear whenever they sing - and they always sing, any time, any place, anywhere, from Bohemian Rhapsody, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted, Never Can Say Goodbye, I’m Not In Love and My Eyes Adored You to When Will I See You Again and of course their signature tune Up On the Roof. Nominated for an Olivier Award for Best Musical.

WOYZECK By Georg Büchner Adapted by Daniel Kramer Woyzeck is the heartbreaking story of a young soldier’s descent into madness. Inspired by real events, Büchner’s unfinished masterpiece remains one of western drama’s most profound and moving explorations of class and morality. Written shortly before his death at the age of twenty-three, Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck is often described as the first ‘modern’ play. It tells the story of a poor soldier manipulated and abused by his superiors, turned into a specimen for cruel experimentation at the hands of the medical establishment, and finally betrayed by the woman he loves, with devastating consequences.

What are Accessible Performances?
What is Captioning? Captioning is a great way for anyone who finds it difficult to hear the actors or to follow dialogue/lyrics. You may hear most things but if you need to see people’s faces to follow a conversation or struggle with certain voices, accents or styles of speaking then captioning is very useful. You will see the words spoken by the performers displayed as text on a screen on or next to the stage. You will also see the name of the character who is speaking and a description of any sound effects. It’s a bit like television subtitles. People who are studying classic texts or want to improve their English may also find captioning useful.
What is Audio Description? Audio Description is a great way for anyone who finds it difficult to see the details of a performance to enjoy coming to the theatre. If you use television audio description, a magnifier or large print books at home, then live audio description means you can enjoy a theatre outing with your friends and family, or meet other partially sighted or blind people who love going to the theatre. If you are interested in booking a pre-show Touch Tour please talk to the Box Office.
What is BSL interpretation? During a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreted performance, an interpreter stands on, or at the side of, the stage, clearly visible to the audience and interprets the spoken word and sound effects of the show for Deaf patrons who use BSL. Sometimes the interpreter is integrated into the performance as a character, as in Graeae Theatre’s production Signs of a Diva.
