We are providing you with an exciting mix of rehearsed readings, works in development and finished pieces to tickle your festival fancy. This year there are new venues added to the line up and a couple of unusual occurrences in strange places! Take for instance The Caravan – which will set up residence outside the New Wolsey Theatre for a week. Once again were partnering with Town Hall Galleries to present some brand new Visual Arts, including some rather random events in the town that will remain under wraps until 24hours before the event!! Check out page 19 to find out how to get involved. It’s really important to say that PULSE has become what it is because of you… the Festival Freddie! Without your avid support, bringing this sort of work to Ipswich would be nigh on impossible – so thanks and keep it up!!
Fringe festivals are all about taking risks - with the smallest ramifications!. This year we’re keeping our ticket prices the same as last – so that’s one obstacle gone. We’ve seen a lot of the work around the country and at the Edinburgh Festival – so that’s ‘quality’ sorted and we’re making sure there is an even broader array of work for you to see – so we’ve got the ‘variety’ covered too!! The only real risk for you is getting from venue to venue in time… which we’ve also taken into account…
TWO BITES OF THE CHERRY
To help you to get the most out of PULSE, evenings when you can see more than one event have been marked with the ‘Two Bites Of The Cherry’ symbol. UNDER CONSTRUCTION
When you see this symbol it indicates that the piece is a rehearsed reading or a work in development. Works in development can be at various stages of production.

BEAUTY – A Peep Show Beauty is a study of social perceptions of beauty that focuses on the local community and its surroundings. The project brings together multiples of media and human senses: sight, sound and smell. Through its multi-sensory installation the public are invited to peer in to an aperture to view a kaleidoscopic explosion of colour, image and sound from a series of collected, abstract video footage of surrounding beauty. The local community has been incorporated in the creation of the piece to highlight the diversity of what is perceived as ‘beautiful’.
Beauty was originally conceived as a collaboration between Tom Purcell and Rapid Arts Project in Avis, Portugal.
OUT THERE Polly Cruse explores the relief felt when distracted from everyday reality. Polly constructs and places objects and ornaments and also photographs these in the interior and exterior landscape to capture moments of dreamt freedom. Her images hint at childhood fantasies about objects becoming animated and lively.

The photographs reference a snapshot of fleeting moments of pleasure and escape. Cruse’s recent work employs the everyday poster form, a mode of display found in commercial street advertising, which she has chosen for its potential to freely engage with a wide and varied audience. She seeks to distract and amuse everyday passers-by, whilst demonstrating an alternative to the usual publicly displayed images that try to sell us products and influence our lives.
www.rapidarts.eu RAPID Arts is a 2 year EU funded culture project delivered by SeaChange Arts (the arts development agency for Great Yarmouth Borough) working with partners from Portugal and Finland, developing creative residencies in each country for young emerging artists and local communities.

DOUBLE BILL LAST ONE STANDING A sensitive and humorous interpretation of game playing explored through contemporary South Asian dance.
This multi-media piece features film by filmmaker Maria Årkesson. www.seetapatel.co.uk Mayday presents
LES ANGLES MORTS DanceEast introduces Canadian dancer/choreographer Mélanie Demers whose work has been taking European audiences by storm.
Les Angles Morts is a powerful duet for dancer and musician/DJ that questions our ability to understand the world from another point of view and observes from every angle, even the blind spots, the small details that make us all the same and perfectly distinct. While we live in a blind society that forgets, ignores, kills and cleans up at the same time, we often choose not to know! We’d rather close our eyes and wait for better times.

PAPERWEIGHT
THE WORLD’S WIFE
Devised by: The company Directed by: Jamie Wood Performed by: Tom Frankland and Sébastien Lawson
An adaptation of the Carol Anne Duffy poetry collection
13.14.15.16.17 (CHECK TIMES CAREFULLY)
Paperweight is the absurd story of two men trapped in mindless office jobs. As the pressures of work and the ever present threat of the telephone ringing increase, chaos descends. An (almost) silent comedy, of escalating intensity and surprising tenderness.
*
A sell out show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe last year, Paperweight received critical acclaim, winning a Scotsman Fringe First Award and a Total Theatre Award nomination. Top of the World is Tom Frankland, Sébastien Lawson and Jamie Wood. Their collaboration fuses surreal humour, visual poetry and arresting storytelling to present a bold and uncompromising theatrical experience.
*
From Mrs Faust and Frau Freud to Queen King and Mrs Midas, this delightful show slices through history and myth, whilst also casting an astute glance over the modern world. Laced with dark humour and acerbic wit, this passionate exposé will enthral lovers of Duffy’s poems and newcomers alike. Linda Marlowe has enjoyed great acclaim for her previous solo work including Berkoff’s Women, which toured internationally and played West End seasons. In this new show her virtuoso performance of Duffy’s brilliant and often controversial verse is interspersed with commentary about the poems.
“the observations of office life are so acute they belong in an emergency room” Metro
“Very funny, inventive and subversive” The Sunday Telegraph
“it’s a funny, sad, truthful and surreal piece” The Scotsman “a small thing of transient beauty” Financial Times
“A consummate actress, gorgeous to look at, slinky and sexy, sensual and impassioned, breathtakingly versatile” The Scotsman on Linda Marlowe

They have inspired and terrified us since the beginning of time. They have been reviled, hunted and then invited back into our lands. In fairy tales, fables and films they have slipped between the identities of human and beast.
SEE PG 12. 13
Wolf explores the ecology, psychology and mythology of these extraordinary animals, and in turn, asks how wild we humans may be. Wolf is about our ears, all the better to hear you with. And about our noses, all the better to smell you with. And it is about how we understand the pack, the family, the loner, and our place on the planet.
SPRINGBOARD, The New Wolsey’s series of drama writing workshops, took as its starting point playwright David Greig’s provocative statement that “nothing should be on stage that doesn’t demand to be there”. Between January and April of this year, 16 aspiring writers, guided by writer and workshop leader Danusia Iwaszko, have been on an imaginative journey together, attempting to unlock each writer’s voice and to unearth the topics that most urgently call out to be explored. Come and enjoy the results – two evenings of fresh and original new writing, directed by The New Wolsey’s Associate Director Rob Salmon. Up to 8 pieces will be presented at each performance.

They have inspired and terrified us since the beginning of time. They have been reviled, hunted and then invited back into our lands. In fairy tales, fables and films they have slipped between the identities of human and beast.

THE SNOW GOOSE DIARIES
BULLY
The first production by the newly-formed Out of Argyle Theatre Company, founded by actor, director and Lecturer in Performing Arts Brian Theodore Ralph and Suffolk College Performing Arts graduate Abram Rooney.
SEE PG 12 . 15 . 17
It is 1947 in rural Russia. Young Pyotr has been given the opportunity of moving away to the city in order to pursue a career as a writer. On the eve of his departure, he reflects upon his life in his native village. We are presented with a series of the incidents and memories that coloured and shaped this young life. Will these recollections of his family and friends stirred by his recorded journal and the recent death of his grandfather affect his decision to abandon the life that he has known? Recommended for ages 14+ www.outofargyle.co.uk
Written and performed by: Richard Fry One day you wake to find that you’ve become your dad... and all you once dreaded now stares back at you... and the cycle of violence continues... A taste for malice haunts the males of his bloodline vampirically passing from grandfather to father to first born son with the exactitude of clockwork. But, as the timid younger brother, spanning his life from tragic childhood to tainted adulthood, Fry charts the inner afflictions of a well meaning soul who tries to break the cycle by becoming a sufferer... rather than the bully.

With no resources other than his own sharp tongue to convey a deeply moving and edifying study of the human condition, this sincere, eloquent rendering of a timeless theme is reminiscent of Greek tragedy in all its sturdiness and spoken in dextrous verse. You will admire its art, its wit and verbal dexterity, and thrill at the frequently vulgar, slang-addled story. A sell-out sensation at the 2008 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Bully is a mesmerising experience and a powerful monologue. ”Let Richard Fry take you in and you will feel the tears rolling down your cheeks within no time.” Three Weeks Recommended for ages 14+ www.theatretoursinternational.com

THE OCTOBER REVOLUTIONS
BRITAIN’S BEST MATES
SEE PG 18 . 20
By: Brian Mitchell BBC scriptwriter Philip and eager, young art student Kath hover frustratingly in that awkward region somewhere between friendship and love. Over the course of three meetings in three parks over three Octobers, they jockey, vie, scheme and battle for position – in a process of continual revolution – with comical, and sometimes brutal, results. Can the romantic setting of the Blue Peter Italian Garden bring the outcome Philip desires? Or will his hopes remain sunken? From the award-winning writer behind The Ornate Johnsons and Spy (both sell-out hits at PULSE 07 and 08), this new play is a touching yet hilarious portrait of just how rubbish humans can be in the pursuit of love.
Spend a hysterical hour with Britain’s Best Mates and you’ll never look at lads the same way again. Funny and touching, compelling and silly, these two delusional young men have created a world for themselves where they never have to see reality, for if they do their world would collapse. Following their award-winning series for Comedy Central, Jamie Glassman and Matthew Steer bring their lovable characters to the stage. Obsessed with sports, lads’ mags, girls and each other Phil & Phill share the secrets of their bizarre, award-winning friendship. Matthew’s credits include regular roles in EastEnders and Silent Witness, the West End play Shades and touring the UK playing Hamlet.

TRIPLE BILL
NEW WOLSEY THEATRE DATE: Friday 5 June TIME: 7.45pm TICKETS: £7
Physical theatre/performance-art De Jong walks – resolutely outlandish – towards freedom, without hesitation, exploring all kinds of facets of womanhood. She jumps with ease between theatre and dance, while she’s sometimes singing too. Renewing herself every performance, she externalizes a series of inner worlds for the audience. Neel de Jong is trained as an actress and a dancer and throughout her whole professional career, she combines these two artdisciplines in order to reveal psychic realities. The silence is – of late – an active partner for her on stage. Pianist Augusto Pirodda accompanies her live during the performance.

It is a contemporary dance piece that fuses explosive movement with eclectic/raw sound and experimental fashion to form an energy driven, physical and abstract interpretation of graffiti found in East London. It incorporates the art and philosophy of graffiti along with the sound of the urban city to take the audience on a visual experience of graffiti through the eyes of contemporary dance. 24

Juliet Holton participated in Pulse 2008 with an exhibition of new paintings. This year she has been invited back as resident at Key Arts’ St Mary on the Quay. Juliet’s work focuses on the process of paint. She uses a variety of mediums including gloss, oil, ink, varnish, acrylic, spray paint and pastels to produce Action Paintings, a style in which paint is dribbled or splashed onto the surface instead of being carefully applied. This year she will engage viewers through the physical act of painting itself, this time involving the audience in the process. You are invited to donate paint and bring your own surfaces (2-d/ 3-d) for her to respond to or incorporate into the ‘action’. Through the live creation of new work viewers have the chance to see how the artist works, and the artist can experience how the viewer responds to the process. Each can engage in reciprocal discussion as fresh outcomes are revealed.
THE TRUTH IS I CAN’T STOP TELLING LIES A new one man show from Señor Tam Hinton, creator of such brain-boggling performance as The Naked Soul of Kirk Godless, the soul-altering play The Package and boxing/poetry spectacle Hard Bards. In this latest slice of hi-octane absurdity, Hinton invites us again to meet more of the strange residents of the Bernard Hepton Housing Estate, an area which, of course, we all know only exists in his head… right? Taking us on a journey through the artistic medium of LIES, he will seek that rare beast, the TRUTH. He tells of tortured genius Simon Crevice – a man driven mad by Boris Johnson; Enid Beveridge, a woman turned on by electrocution; Brenda Surplus, part-girl, part-dog; and Lonely Barry Ungswater, the only truly normal person in the world.
The event is open to all. To learn how you can become part of Juliet’s Process of Painting contact Julia Devonshire, Arts Project Officer, Ipswich Borough Council:
These tall tales are presented with Hinton’s customary twisted zeal and sharp suited aplomb. But as he weaves his twisted fibs, we come to fear that they may after all contain a kernel of terrible truth… But how much? Oh god… surely THAT bit can’t be true?

The New Wolsey Theatre’s Creative Learning Team, in association with Synergy, recently appointed local playwright Danusia Iwaszko to lead a 10-week playwrighting course at Hollesley Bay Open Prison. The course culminated with a rehearsed reading by professional actors of an excerpt from each of the participants’ work. The final pieces were then submitted to Synergy’s National Prison Script Writing competition Write Now.
OUT WESTGATE Rural Suffolk is the best place to retire to, the safest place to raise kids in and the finest place to cover up old secrets... Rural Suffolk isn’t as idyllic as they’d have you believe... Set on the day of John Peel’s funeral in 2004, Out Westgate, written and directed by Drew Taylor, is a blackly comedic 21st century drama. Set in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, the play explores our need to suppress, forget, and “carry-onregardless”. Our forgotten childhood misdemeanours will always return to haunt us as adults...

TWO BYE TWO Created for Union Dance, Two Bye Two is an emotional journey of a relationship between two humans, a roller-coaster which leads the audience in the dance by a flowing and powerful duet as well as a great piece of music for Avol Apart ‘Frates’. “Given its awesome provenance, choreographing to Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring is a brave, or barmy, move. Anh Ngoc Nguyen did surprisingly well, marshalling his seven dancers to speedy, dramatic effect…” Evening Standard www.randomdance.org/the_company/dancers/anh_ngoc_nguyen www.youtube.com/user/anhnguyendance
COPE NEW WOLSEY STUDIO DATE: Sunday 7 June TIME: 7pm TICKETS: £5
Cope is a new piece by emerging company Kieran Sheehan Dance Theatre, combining filmic movement, spoken word, dance, poetry, design, live and pre-recorded music to create powerfully expressionistic dance theatre.
Combining a slick aesthetic with a visceral cathartic theme, Cope will leave you breathless. Recommended for ages 14+ www.kieransheehan.com
BEDROOM STORIES A cow escapes from the slaughterhouse, a jealous lover struggles with the exes, a smelly sea forces the pirates ashore... From the intimacy of the bedroom, emerge these three darkly humorous stories, innovatively told in a physical and vividly imaginative way that interweaves live and pre-recorded music with movement and a lyrical text. “A very inventive piece of storytelling. He moves with the grace and precision of a dancer. But he’s got the mischievous spirit of a comedian and satirist.” The Star Phoenix “There’s something compelling about a performance that’s just so danged different.” Orlando Sentinel Recommended for ages 13+ www.fergusrougier.com www.uk.youtube.com/fergusrougier

Cope is the story of two women unable to move on from the events of their past, trapped in a world where every noise, touch and taste stings with the memory of what came before. The Women are watched by the Witness. Like looking at a car crash, the deeper the pain, the more horrific the memory, the more desperately they suffer, the more she needs to witness. And so a cycle of dependency is established linking the three women, a dependency on never dealing with the pain, never getting over the issue, never entering a dialogue.

JUDE SIMPSON: MAKING HAPPY
THE HISTORY OF THE POMEGRANATE
Stand-up poet Jude Simpson brings her unique blend of observational comedy, witty wordplay, poetry, rap and song to the subject of happiness. Do you have to wait for happiness, or can you make it happen? Can you only be happy by being good? And if not, why do most books on happiness seem to be written by monks?
Performed by: Lewis Barfoot Directed by: Peta Lily Music composed and performed by: Litha Efthymiou Design by: Michelle Reader Supported by: Old Vic New Voices
From a lament about the clichés of falling in love, to a poem on the beneficial habits of reptiles and a song praising the humble spleen, Jude has wide appeal, a strong feel-good factor and the ability to leave you with a suspicion that maybe, just maybe, everything’s going to be OK… “one of the few fringe shows that will leave you feeling warm inside and content with the world… her charming sideways look at life is impossible not to enjoy” Skinny Fest on Growing Up Games Recommended for ages 13+ www.judesimpson.co.uk www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqpBfUpCQX4

Working with a composer and sculptor, Lewis Barfoot deftly brings to life The History of The Pomegranate in a show combining visual theatre, live music and song. WHAT IS IT? Escalator is an Arts Council England, East initiative which aims to identify, nurture and develop artistic talent in the East. Escalator Performing Arts and Escalator East to Edinburgh are both strands of this larger scheme run by The Junction in partnership with Colchester Arts Centre. Both schemes provide structured support for performing artists and companies who want to develop artistically and establish a market place for their work. Escalator Performing Arts focuses on research and development whilst Escalator East to Edinburgh prepares artists / companies for The Edinburgh Festival Fringe and beyond. The programmes have championed a wide range of artists and companies including Hoipolloi, New International Encounter (NIE) and New Art Club. HORSE Performed by: Flick Ferdinando Created by: Flick Ferdinando, John-Paul Zaccarini and Derek Ives
“Escalator has been invaluable… It is vital for the industry to have creative hubs to provide a safe and facilitating environment for making new, exciting, challenging and innovative work.” Cat Moore: General Manager / Producer, NIE groups together a selection of Escalator artists and companies over one weekend…
The woman sits alone in a stable where she delves into a life of horse thoughts and gallops through observations of horsey behaviour. She conjures a world where imaginary horses are ridden, tragic songs are sung and hilarious antics on a gym horse dissolve into a desperate desire to have one of her own.
SEE PG 34 . 35
Horse is funny, tragic and surprising. Horse is a thrilling piece from Company FZ, renowned for their unique syntheses of comedy, visual imagery, text and circus inspired choreography which is human and compelling to watch.

KING OF THE GYPSIES
IS EVERYONE OK?
Written by: Pauline Lynch with original verbatim sourced material Directed by: Matt Cullum
By: Joel Horwood
“All they do is steal from us, wreck our countryside and de-value our property. They pay no taxes and contribute nothing to society. Get them out!”
SEE PG 39 . 40
Today’s gypsy and traveller communities face bad press, local hatred and a level of prejudice verging on the insane… Deserved? Or not?
King of the Gypsies follows a gypsy bare knuckle fighter whose memories and fading dreams haunt him; his victories, his losses, his every choice reflected in the objects that are carried with him on his ceaseless travels.
Daisy’s job is on the line and whilst she can’t remember why she has it, she’s sure she can’t afford to lose it. Meanwhile Em’s about to become a self-elected single mother and Cameron doesn’t know what to do with these strange warm feelings that the office temp has infected him with…
Is Everyone OK? is a sixty-minute joyride for the lost and bewildered. Three people trying to work out if they are doing okay or if everything’s going to shit – people who can only connect from behind a microphone. Three stories about us, now, and how terrified we are. A brand new theatrical experience for anyone who has ever hit 30 and asked themselves what they’re doing with their life.
This ‘work in development’ combines verbatim text and new writing in a vibrant amalgam of image and sound. Due to premiere in August at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, King of the Gypsies journeys into a deeply private and secretive community, a community about which we actually know very little…
Is Everyone OK? is a dazzling tour-de-force, blurring the boundary between stand-up comedy and stand-up tragedy. A collaboration between Fringe First winning playwright Joel Horwood and internationally acclaimed new writing company nabokov.

Imagine if The Muppets has become embittered with their careers, gone off the rails and performed their kid’s show through a haze of gin and schadenfreude. That’s Sh*tty Deal! Following highly successful runs at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2007 and 2008, Oh! What a Sh*tty War is Sh*tty Deal Puppet Theatre Company’s third full-length show. After tackling such diverse themes as Art and Oppression, this rag-tag crew of foulmouthed puppets turn their withering gaze on the entire history of warfare, as cynical clown puppet Mr Doper takes his innocent sidekick Bobby on a hilarious journey through battles and bloodshed to find out why warfare is as endemic to the human condition as back hair. Recommended for ages 15+ Contains strong language, puppet violence and, yes, Barbie nudity! www.axisofevilproductions.com www.youtube.com/axisofeviluk

SOUND JOURNEY Created and performed by Afro-Brazilian master percussionist Adriano Adewale, Sound Journey is a solo work of worldmusic-theatre which uses percussion, voice and dance to explore its contemporary themes of cultural identity, migration, immigration and climate change. The themes are developed though seven performance pieces, each with a very distinctive identity but which taken as a whole have a strong narrative unity.
Sound Journey employs conventional, traditional, organic and experimental instruments, each carefully chosen and with a specific role to play in the telling of the story. Although most instruments come from Brazil it is possible to hear strong influences from India, Europe, the Middle East and, in particular, the African Continent.
