From: Mary Barrera, Finance Director Re:
2015 Proposed Tax Rate
As the Budget Officer for the City of Weslaco, Mr. Mike R. Perez has been working in conjunction with the Finance Department staff to consider the requests of the City of Weslaco department directors and develop a proposal for a budget for the 2015-2016 fiscal year. Taking into consideration realistic revenue projections, Mr. Perez has recommended a budget that I feel will meet the needs of the citizens of Weslaco. In light of that, the City Commission has reached a critical point in the governance process. In order to support the proposed budget, the Commission must also consider a proposed tax rate. I am recommending that the proposed tax rate be set not to exceed the current tax rate of .6767 per $100 valuation. The Property Tax Code prescribes the method that the proposed rate must be approved by the governing body. It must be a record vote, and if the rate exceeds the lower of the calculated effective and/or rollback tax rate (as presented by the Hidalgo County Tax AssessorCollector), the City Commission must announce two public hearings to be held to discuss the tax rate. I am proposing the following two dates for the Public Hearings (should they be necessary): • •
First Public Hearing – August 12, 2015 Second Public Hearing – August 18, 2015
I am attaching a proposed 2015 Planning Calendar for the budget and tax rate setting process. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions on these matters.
