Annual Report
Letter from the President
I
write this report to Wesley’s constituents at the beginning of my 20th year as president. Each year, I have looked both back to try to give an accurate account of how we have invested the resources of the people listed in these pages to pursue our mission and ahead with confidence. Last year was the most difficult time in a generation for Wesley and every other organization. I felt I had to provide a sober assessment of where we stood in the crisis. I read some of Winston Churchill’s wartime speeches to get in the right frame of mind for that message! This year is very different. Because we left campus and went online immediately, our seminary community remained healthy and almost completely COVID free; because of the dedication of our students and faculty and staff, our enrollment stayed even; and, because of the overflowing generosity of our donors, we ended the fiscal year with a balanced budget. And now, we safely and cautiously return to campus. There are great challenges ahead, there always are. I became president in the wake of 9/11 and rode out the effects
of the Great Recession of 2008. As Hamlet says, the future is an “undiscovered country.” But now is a time to celebrate and remember why it is we teach, study, serve, and give to Wesley Theological Seminary. For this I have a better text than a war time speech, and I want to offer a simple metaphor: We are the stewards of a spring for a community. The image comes from John 7:38: “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, ‘out of their hearts will flow rivers of living water.’” I was thinking of the drought in my home country on the West Coast, and of the drying up of the underground aquifers in the Midwest and other parts of the world. “Living water,” which is to say, flowing water, fresh water, is the central image of new life and flourishing. And so, Jesus went down to the river to be baptized in flowing water and then spoke of living water. Here’s what I think Jesus means. For human community to flourish and find solutions to problems ranging from global warming and pandemics to systemic racism, childhood poverty, and deep political division,
Rev. Dr. David McAllister-Wilson we need more idealistic, selfless people. That’s what living water is in this life. It is the answer to the prayer, “Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” I’m not talking only about our alumni. That’s too presumptuous and there are not enough of us. I’m thinking more about the congregations and organizations we serve and especially about what we all profess and try to be at our best. We tend a spring at Wesley. The living water is an idea, a commandment. They asked Jesus what the most important commandment was. And he said there were two that amounted to one:

“Love of God,” and “Love of neighbor.” Some people believe Jesus is telling the truth about how we are meant to live; others of us also believe he is the truth himself. Either way, we are a flowing source of a divine proposition which has the power we call “grace” to transform the world through people who think and act independently of the crowd on behalf of a different way of life.

Annual Report 2021
Throughout this Annual Report, you’ll find short notes and quotes from just a few of our current students and recent graduates. These are the students we nurture throughout their Wesley Seminary experience, these who will be transformational leaders. If this was a sermon at a revival service, I would now invite us to sing “Shall We
Gather at the River” and issue an altar call. Instead, I give thanks for those who have brought us safe thus far and enable us to look forward with confidence.
Facts and Figures Every year we equip students for ministry in an ever-changing world through the generous support of our alumni and donors. We are grateful for your gifts. 2020–2021 SOURCES OF FISCAL YEAR INCOME*

THE REV. TIFFANY BROOKS, MDIV ‘21
THE REV. HYUNGSUK OH, MTS ‘21
Rev. Tiffany Brooks didn’t wait for Commencement to start changing the world. While studying, she was a minister to young adults, and a student research associate and involved in the Change Makers project. Her work as a co-founder of a nonprofit focuses on fighting food apartheid by creating agriculturally sustainable models in communities of color to ensure a world that is sustainable for the marginalized and disenfranchised.
Hyungsuk, President of Wesley’s Korean Students Association from Gimpo, Republic of South Korea wanted to continue his education at Wesley because of its reputation for emphasizing both theology and ministry practice. That, and for its “ethnic, nationality and cultural diversity. The atmosphere of encouraging diversity and caring for the minority has had a great influence on my learning.” Hyungsuk aspires to live by his favorite John Wesley quote: “The best thing of all is God is with us.”

PASTOR LENORA WHITECOTTON, MDIV ‘21 Now a certified candidate for ordination as an elder for the Michigan Conference of the UMC, Lenora said her experience as a Wesley seminarian helped her articulate her theology and call to ministry, hone and develop new skills, all while making great friends and connections. “I’m confident in the knowledge I have obtained and am assured that wherever I end up serving, I will have the lessons, experience, and support of the Wesley community.”
MINISTER MARCUS JEAN, MDIV ‘21
PASTOR MARCELA JARMAN, MDIV ‘21 Born and raised in Colombia, Marcela’s love of drawing led her to earn a degree in architecture and enter that profession. A trip to visit her cousin, a WTS graduate, changed the direction of her life. After converting to Methodism, she became involved in her church’s Latinx ministry and felt called to ministry. As a young wife and mother, she was concerned about how she would afford seminary when she learned she received the Wesley Governors’ Scholarship, “Ok, God, you have really given me this path, to be educated, to see how we can build the Church in another language.” She has a passion for Latinx ministry and being a bridge between cultures.
Now a young adult AME minister, Marcus has a heart for serving God’s people and a passion for engaging communities, and he hopes to continue a ministry of mission work to aid the Missio Dei in plentitude for all of God’s creation. “Prior to the pandemic, I organized a mission trip to Haiti every summer through my nonprofit God Opening Doors. As our nation works to navigate out of the Covid-19 pandemic, I am hopeful and can’t wait to resume mission engagement,” shared Marcus. Reflecting upon his time at Wesley, Marcus says “This seminary journey has aided my theology & theological formation significantly! It has equipped me to uniquely engage in community and share life with those who don’t look or think like me. This experience has allowed me to gain a greater view of who God is and what community can be!” One of his guiding mottos: “Plant seeds for trees that will outgrow your life and give shade to people you will never know.”
SEAN GRAY MDIV ‘21 Wesley provides the perfect place to study and wrestle with a call to ministry. While attending Foundry UMC as a student, Sean Gray said he “particularly loved the opportunities I had to learn about how to put our Methodist faith into practice both in our own individual and collective lives and into service with the broader DC community.” While he felt called to ordained ministry in the UMC, “Still, I questioned that call, thinking that I’m too young, too inexperienced. I wanted to find a place in some nonprofit ministry and even attempted to enter the world of politics. But in the end, my call won out and I am excited to share that I will be taking on the role of a youth director with a United Methodist church in northern Virginia and continuing in the process to become a pastor someday.”

ARUNJANA DAS, THIRD-YEAR SEMINARIAN MTS Arunjana hails from Assam, the land of tea in India. She grew up as a Hindu and embraced the Christian faith as an adult in her mid-20s. With a “hybrid” religious identity, she finds her living water at the spiritual oasis watered by both traditions. With several other degrees informing her experience including Engineering, Journalism and Public Affairs and International Nuclear Law, she chose Wesley as it encourages its students to cultivate a critical mind, a loving heart, and a faithful spirit. Arunjana added, “The faculty at Wesley have inspired me to read the Bible critically, but, at the same time, understanding the humanness of the writers and appreciating the divinity of the source.” What’s after graduation? “I hope to bring world peace. No—I jest. That’s the job for Jesus. My calling is to follow in His footsteps—my area of interest is peacemaking focusing especially on nuclear disarmament and the applicability of force in the international community.” How? By working “towards the goal of formulating practical frameworks and strategies that are relevant for peacemaking in an international community in collaboration with relevant organizations, networks, and individuals, and other faith and secular groups.”

EVERETT MCALLISTER, MDIV ‘21 Everett McAllister, is a former Pharmacist and USAF Colonel (Retired) with 30 years of health care leadership. And, he’s a seasoned global traveler. As the 2020-2021 Student Council President, he worked to build community among students during a period of social climate angst and an international pandemic by encouraging hope and resilience. “The year 2020 has been very unusual and unpredictable. What we knew to be normal is anything but normal.” One of his favorite scriptures helped him with this work: In the midst of it all, Be strong and Be courageous for with God nothing shall be impossible. Wesley’s diversity, academic program flexibility, and ability to prepare students for ministry locally and globally attracted Everett to Wesley. “I believe that effective ministry is diverse and that a diverse seminary experience is what encourages and prepares students to view ministry in aspects outside of themselves and to view ministry with a global perspective. Prior to applying to seminary, I extensively researched several schools across the country, and Wesley consistently remained at the top of my list,” remembered Everett. “Wesley offers excellent opportunities to broaden one’s exposure to a rich diversity of perspectives, cultures, faiths, and experiences. These opportunities serve to enrich and enhance our learning so that we will be better informed and prepared to communicate and interact with the world in which we live. “
CASSANDRA LAWRENCE, MDIV ‘21 Before Wesley, Cassandra’s Master’s dissertation at Queen’s University in Belfast, Ireland was on Islamic Nonviolence in Palestine and Pakistan. Wesley’s location in Washington, D.C., its diversity and dedication to academia and pastoral care drew Cassandra to Wesley. “I wanted to attend Wesley so I could stay rooted in my community in DC while continuing to work in faith-rooted peacebuilding,” And Wesley’s commitment to her through scholarship support made it possible to juggle a professional and academic life. “I’ve loved working while doing studies so I can actively practice integrating liberation theological frameworks and pastoral care into online engagement and justice work. It also gives me heart-breaking and hope-filled examples on how to spark Christians to live into the call for justice. Working with so many passionate faith communities has driven home for me the need for pastoral presence in justice work and for justice in congregational spaces,” she says. In addition, she’ll be pursuing ordination as a Deacon in the United Methodist Church.
THE REV. YENNY DELGADO, MASTER OF THEOLOGICAL STUDIES ‘21 Yenny is a Licensed Psychologist and a ruling Elder and Session member in the Presbyterian Church USA. A native of Peru, she is of Native American descent and has deep appreciation of her cultural roots. “It was my grandmother who taught me about our traditions and resistance as a native population. She would share with me our culture, such as how they lived in the mountains and cultivated the land,” she says. The Public Theology specialization and Wesley’s innovative approach to ministry solidified her choice to study at Wesley. “Wesley’s Public Theology program was intriguing as it focuses on developing responsive contextual theologies that incorporate our efforts to deconstruct systemic oppression, racism, and white supremacy ideology,” shared Yenny. She has brought her public theology experience as the founder of PUBLICA to Wesley. PUBLICA is forum where active theologians reflect, share, write and discuss issues of theology, society, culture, and politics. Dedicated to lifelong learning and to a ministry that combines both mental health and community, she says, “I am committed to merging and developing new insights from understanding the intersections between psychology, community and theology.” We have no doubt she is well on her path.

KENIA VANESSA RODRIGUEZ, ESQ., MDIV ‘21 Recent graduate Kenia Vanessa Rodriguez is also Bar member practicing immigration law. On campus, she was well-known as one of the founders of the Gente Latinx Seminarians Association, a group active in their support of Latinx students on campus and raising Latinx awareness to the Wesley Community. For Vanessa, community is very important. “As a Latina, community is a pillar of my being and thus, establishing that and fostering that in all my spaces and places is elemental,” she noted. As a lawyer, it’s not surprising that she gravitates toward inspiring quotes about justice including one by Cesar Chavez that begins: “We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community.” “The most impactful experience I had at Wesley, aside from the courses and community, was the MLK immersion I did in January 2021,” said Vanessa. Her field education experience – known as PMM at Wesley—was also powerfully affecting. She served in two hospital chaplaincy settings for her PMM, and discovered a real passion for hospital chaplaincy—and hopes to continue to be involved in chaplaincy in the future.

A NOTE ABOUT THE COVER AND PHOTO CREDITS When the 2019 and 2020 graduates marched into the Washington National Cathedral for their abbreviated commencement ceremony—there was no congregation of family, friends and participants. Instead, a flock of more than 2000 origami paper doves in the grand nave greeted them. German artist Michael Pendry was invited to install his Les Colombes exhibit that has appeared in half a dozen cathedrals around the globe. Doves were chosen as their representation of hope and the Holy Spirit and to encourage a feeling of optimism after a very challenging 2020. While the installation moved shortly after the commencement, we wanted to include a note about the beautiful work. Similarly, as you read the annual report you will see the words of a cross-section of our current students and recent graduates and believe you will be imbued with a similar sense of optimism emanating from the Wesley community. Additional information on Michael Pendry’s work can be found at cathedral.org/doves/. The majority of the photos in the WTS Annual Report are the work of photographers Lisa Helfert and Tony Richards.
