In 2017 Hull was named the UK city of culture however upon visiting, it became clear that its culture and architectural heritage was under threat from new developments.
Many of the historic buildings were being destroyed and replaced with nondescript blocks of flats. My proposition was to create a school dedicated to training students heritage skills that could be used to start a retrofit revolution and protect Hull’s historic buildings.
Three disciplines were selected - Carpentry, Ironmongery and Masonry. Workshops were then developed as independent working spaces within the school.

I arranged to meet with some crafts people back in Nottingham to experience working in their fields.

The school featured four pods connected by covered walkways and open plan study spaces.
Each pod had two floors to give space for a workshop and computer lab.
The scheme utilises local brick and weathering steel to evoke a sense of place, situating the building within an industrial landscape.

Project Kagiso is a charity competition I entered through the university of Nottingham.
The brief was to design a nursery school in rural South Africa.
My team won the competition and flew out to the site in our Easter holidays where we built our design with a team of volunteers.
The project took just over four weeks to build and cost just over twenty four thousand pounds to build. Janeth Malatja, Principle of the school sent us a message once the project was complete: “We are very very excited, we are going to work very hard because we can now provide the children with two classrooms. We can divide the children in their groups. We are very, very excited. Me and our staffs; the whole community; we are very very happy.”

Edinburgh is heralded as one of the world’s greatest cultural cities, showcasing fantastic art during the festival season. Local creatives have however named it ‘a city in crisis’ because the Fringe festival has absorbed all the attention from the arts community and funding committees, leaving little for local grassroots artists.

The Edinburgh Community Arts Centre (ECAC) aims to provide a permanent venue for local artists to make and display new work.
I selected a brownfield site in Cowgate (central Edinburgh) for the project. The orientation of the site and the neighbouring buildings provided challenges that were dealt with in an iterative development process.

The building is split over seven floors and takes architectural inspiration from Benson and Forsyth who designed the Museum of Scotland.
The internal spaces are divided between artists studios, performance venues, offices and artist residencies.
This section cuts through the building north to south revealing a variety of studio spaces arranged around a central covered courtyard.
To achieve CIBSE accreditation I was required to produce an energy performance analysis of the building. This image shows the stacking principle used to cool the building in the summer months.

Stratford Waterfront (Olympicopolis) Stratford Waterfront is a residential scheme for approximately 600 units, located opposite the London Olympic Stadium. This was my first project at Allies and Morrison after graduating. I saw the development of the residential portion of the masterplan from stage 1 to the end of stage 2. My primary roles were to design the typical flat layouts with the project architect, produce visuals for design team meetings and DAS. Time on project Team Size Disclipline Featured Articles

Elephant Town Centre Development of the new town centre for Elephant and Castle. The project incorporates a new public realm, retail outlet, university building for UAL, nearly 500 homes, and a new tube station. I worked primarily on the residential offer, developing the floor plans and core layout but have also helped to produce retail massing options and entrance lobby designs. I saw the project through from stage 2+ until the end of stage 4. Time on project Team Size Disclipline
