AN OPERA CONFERENCE PRODUCTION IN ASSOCIATION WITH PERTH FESTIVAL
6-15 FEBRUARY REGAL THEATRE
Set out on the road trip of a lifetime with a spunky teenager running away from school, two hippies, a wily Uncle and a German priest. By the time you shake the red dust from your feet, you’ll know what it means to come home. Jimmy Chi’s coming-of-age musical Bran Nue Dae is an exuberant ride through 1960s Western Australia. Young Willie hitchhikes his way from mission school back to Broome, determined to win the heart of the girl he left behind. A feel-good mash-up of rock-and-roll, gospel, country and blues music made the first-ever Aboriginal musical a sparkling success in 1990. The stage is a recreation of the historic Sun Pictures open-air cinema in Broome, and the costumes are delightfully nostalgic. Chi’s semi-autobiographical musical is packed with humour and hope. It’s a story for all Australians, the late musician said “It is my story but it is also yours and everybody else you know who seeks love and happiness in a world clouded by injustice”.

FIDELIO
BEETHOVEN’S ONLY OPERA BLAZES WITH HEROISM
7PM | 28 FEBRUARY | 2PM | 01 MARCH
PERTH CONCERT HALL
Chained in a secret dungeon, an innocent man awaits certain death. But in Beethoven’s ode to love, risk and triumph, there is one prison guard who holds the key to his fate. Fidelio is the uplifting tale of Leonore, a heroic woman who creates a daring plan to free her husband from wrongful imprisonment, and the tyranny that put him there. Under the direction of Asher Fisch, Beethoven’s score blazes with soulstirring emotion in this concert production of a work rarely performed in Perth. German soprano Christiane Libor delivers a mighty, no-holds-barred performance as Leonore, leading one of the finest casts assembled in Australia. Celebrating the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth, Fidelio is presented as a hallmark work of the 2020 Perth Festival. Featuring the full force of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, the West Australian Opera Chorus and WASO Chorus with narrator Eryn Jean Norvill, this once in a generation retelling of one of the most inspiring stories ever set to music is completely unmissable.

STAR NAVIGATOR 7.30PM | 28 MARCH
PERTH CONCERT HALL
Based on the true story of Tupaia, a Tahitian star navigator who sailed with James Cook on the Endeavour, this beautiful and haunting work explores the 1770 meeting of two master mariners. Each is from a vastly different place and culture. Although Tupaia and Cook were equally at home amidst the beauties and terrors of the sea, the work highlights the tragic irony of these two navigators of genius not being able to find their way into each other’s world. Star Navigator is a new work by Tim Finn OBE originally commissioned by West Australian Opera, New Zealand Opera and Victorian Opera supported by the state government of Western Australia. This landmark event will be presented as a staged concert featuring international soloists with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in a world premiere performance.

Love, betrayal and revenge all play out in a quiet village in a rural corner of Italy. Domestic and social tensions are revealed in full voiced expression, showing that the trials of the people are rich ground for operatic storytelling. The classic pairing of these one-act operas, often known as ‘Cav & Pag’, are celebrated as the birth of verismo, a style of music drama, depicting the crude passions of everyday people rather than the exploits of kings, queens and gods. Emotions run high in these two tales that will resonate with you for their powerful raw depictions of everday life, in all its heartbreaking and beautiful complexities. These stories and the music that surrounds them have become some of the most loved in the world of opera with Caruso’s recording of the famous aria “Vesti la giubba” becoming the first single record to sell over a million copies. German based Australian conductor, Rebecca Lang makes her debut with the company, leading an impassioned cast, the WAO chorus and WASO.

The Emperor of China convinces the nightingale to sing for him but when the Emperor of Japan arrives with the gift of a mechanical nightingale, he becomes obsessed with his new toy and the real nightingale flies away. Struck down by illness and with his mechanical nightingale now broken, the Emperor begs the nightingale to return and sing for him again. CHRISTOPHER VAN TUINEN MUSIC DIRECTOR
From the very old to the very new, there is a stupendous amount of opera to choose from and we’ve worked hard to bring you the very best. Collaboration is king in the world of opera and we’re proud of the way this season reaches and engages with diverse artists, companies and artforms. From a new production of an indigenous work in Bran Nue Dae, presented with Opera Conference and in association with Perth Festival, through reimagining Opera in the Park with Hansel and Gretel, our chorus joining forces with WASO for Fidelio and the world premiere of Tim Finn’s Star Navigator we get the year off to a bang. We then move over to UWA to make Winthrop Hall a stage for Mendelssohn’s Elijah, taking this monumental work out of the sacred and revealing it as an opera in disguise. Returning to His Majesty’s Theatre we’ve assembled an outstanding cast in Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci, which is as tragic, romantic and
impassioned as 19th century Italian opera ever gets. We’re delighted to present The Nightingale, a 50min work for young people by young people, in collaboration with five WA companies, in the home of opera here at His Majesty’s Theatre. Closing our 2020 season is Mozart’s comedy, Cosi fan tutte. Exquisite in every detail and brimming with wit and charm this WA exclusive comes direct from Glyndebourne Festival in the UK and will be sung by some of Australia’s finest singers living here and abroad. Our Opera in the Regions program will continue to reach new audiences in iconic locations while our education program expands and engages young minds in the joy of singing and telling stories. Wesfarmers Arts Singing Classes get a lift too with our Community Gala where our adult singing students get a chance to perform on the His Majesty’s stage with our Young Artists and WASO in the pit.
“From the very old to the very new, there is a stupendous amount of opera to choose from and we’ve worked hard to bring you the very best.”
See you all in 2020 at West Australian Opera.

Supporting your opera company goes further than you can imagine! On average, the price of an opera ticket covers a quarter of the cost of presenting that night’s performance. When you take your seat and settle in for a night at the opera you are joining a huge number of people who make the performance come to life – singers, orchestra, chorus, conductor, director, set and costume designer, lighting designer, repetiteurs, production manager, stage manager, assistant stage managers, mechanists, fly operators, stage crew, orchestral management, dome operators, surtitle operator, head of wardrobe, dressers, make-up artists, stage door keeper, front of house manager, ushers, box office, food and beverage manager, bar
staff, cleaners, security, marketing, development, producers and production. This group of people, some of whom have been planning and working towards this performance for years, then honing their efforts together across the rehearsal period are now ready to welcome the most important group, the audience, to the theatre. In addition to buying tickets to a performance, donating to your opera company means that the magic of the opera can reach further and the people who create it can dream even more. Thank you, Christopher van Tuinen Music Director
ANNUAL GIVING Annual giving is the most important way to support your opera company and these donations support everything we aim to achieve. We value our annual giving patrons and enjoy many shared opera experiences together. We invite you, if you are already a donor, to renew and perhaps increase your support. And, if you have not yet given in support of our work, that you join our special group of donors. You can donate by: • Adding a donation when booking your package • Donating online at www.waopera.asn.au/support • Posting a donation to PO Box 7052, Cloisters Square, Perth WA 6850 • Contacting West Australian Opera on 9278 8999 or email cbishop@waopera.asn.au
