2019

Opera is all about heart. But, in 2019, West Australian Opera is digging even deeper. The surprising theme behind our season is…blood. Blood is life-force, symbol, power, and passion…just like the best opera. In 2019, we put four blood types under the microscope: • • • •

The sign of approaching death (La traviata). The family ties of a warring couple to their daughter (The Magic Flute). The price taken in gleeful revenge for past wrongs (Sweeney Todd). The stain which can never be rubbed clean (Macbeth).

At West Australian Opera, we tell stories through the power of the singing human voice. And, as always, our stories are about the experience of being human - our passions, our peril, and our pleasures. In 2019, we continue to bring you powerful stories, sung through arresting music. Join us on the next stage of our journey…it’s going to be bloody fantastic. Brad Cohen Artistic Director

JAMES CLAYTON IS

MACBETH Lord Macbeth was a loyal General who had sworn allegiance to the King of Scotland but when a group of witches reveal a prophecy that he will one day be King, he and Lady Macbeth become consumed by greed. They plot the King’s untimely demise. Years pass and the guilt of their callous actions begins to devour them. The King and Queen find themselves entangled in a never-ending cycle of lies, murder and

betrayal that ultimately cost them more than their reign. This gripping telling of Shakespeare’s classic boasts one of Verdi’s most renowned musical scores. This brand new co-production from West Australian Opera and State Opera of South Australia tells a haunting tale that explores the double-edged sword of fate and betrayal.

Each year over 10,000 people enjoy a free evening of opera under the stars at the City of Perth Opera in the Park. Investment in the arts is pivotal to the cultural enrichment and economic diversity of our city.

BRAD COHEN ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

I welcome you warmly to our 2019 season. In a world where truth can struggle to be heard above the noise of lies and misdirection, the power of storytelling to disturb and provoke us takes on an even greater importance. The power of the sung word can connect us to our humanity, to our powers of dreaming, and even to our hopes for greater compassion and understanding. In 2019, we continue to widen the scope of our operatic offering to you. For the first time, we present the music theatre of Stephen Sondheim in his masterpiece Sweeney Todd. We honour Verdi twice: with a new production of his great early opera Macbeth, for the first time in Perth. At the start of our season - City of Perth

Opera in the Park - we present his tale of love and sacrifice, La traviata. We are delighted to collaborate with the Perth Festival in presenting the great Australian director Barrie Kosky’s take on The Magic Flute at the home of opera, His Majesty’s Theatre. Opera is a communal artform. Not only in the auditorium, where our patrons gather to enjoy the transcendence of live music drama – but on the stage, under, above and behind it, where the passion, expertise and talent of our artists, our stage crew, our staff and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra unite in unmissable experiences. I’m so happy that you can join us throughout 2019, and to be part of this magic.

THE HONOURABLE

KIM BEAZLEY AC

GOVERNOR OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA VICE REGAL PATRON OF WEST AUSTRALIAN OPERA

As Vice Regal Patron of West Australian Opera, I welcome you to the 2019 opera season. For half a century West Australian Opera has been the state opera company proudly performing with the West Australian Opera Chorus and West Australian Symphony Orchestra. The 2019 program opens with the popular free family summer event, City of Perth Opera in the Park in Supreme Court Gardens. Verdi’s masterpiece La traviata will be presented in a concert style performance on Saturday 2 February. Collaboration is important in the arts and West Australian

20

Opera will be working with Perth Festival to present The Magic Flute directed by Barrie Kosky, is a once-in-a-generation experience for audiences, with Victoria Opera and New Zealand Opera to present their production of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd and with State Opera of South Australia to co-produce a new production of Verdi’s Macbeth. I acknowledge the state opera company’s performance partner West Australian Symphony Orchestra who will be playing for all these performances, and Wesfarmers Arts who have taken a leadership position in supporting the arts in Western Australia and who are West Australian Opera’s Principal Partner.

DAVID TEMPLEMAN MINISTER FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT; HERITAGE; CULTURE AND THE ARTS

West Australian Opera is a key cultural institution in this State and is highly regarded by audiences in both the metropolitan and regional areas. We can look forward to great works and an ongoing commitment to community outreach to bring opera to all Western Australians. West Australian Opera has played an important role in our cultural development, improving community vibrancy and enriching this state through the power of song. In 2019, the company continues its Opera in the Regions touring series, taking live opera out into the regions and empowering local communities to create their own choirs through dedicated Wesfarmers Arts Singing Classes.

The City of Perth Opera in the Park is a highlight each summer and, with the support of Lotterywest and Healthway, the company will present the ever-popular Verdi opera La traviata in Supreme Court Gardens. Opera in the Quarry returns to the beautiful Quarry Amphitheatre and on the mainstage at His Majesty’s Theatre, audiences can enjoy Mozart’s The Magic Flute, a collaboration with Perth Festival, Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd and Verdi’s Macbeth. The State Government is proud to support West Australian Opera and I wish the company every success. It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2019 season of West Australian Opera.

21

ANDREW PASCOE CHAIRMAN

On the mainstage in 2019, we take you on a journey of opera’s most vulnerable characters. From the courtesan story of Violetta in La traviata, the prince searching for his princess in The Magic Flute, the barber turned killer in Sweeney Todd and the guilt stricken King in Macbeth. Presenting opera is possible only with the support of our partners and donors led by Principal Partner Wesfarmers Arts. I acknowledge and thank the Federal Government for the support it provides through the Australia Council, the State Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport Recreation and Cultural Industries and Lotterywest and local government through the City of Perth and Healthway with the message Act-Belong-Commit.

22

The Board shares your passion for opera and this will always be the bedrock of our artistic vision. However, we are also determined to broaden the reach of this art form and to make it accessible in outer metropolitan and regional areas. In 2019, we continue our commitment to Opera in the Regions. These live experiences are held in breathtaking locations and we are proud to innovate the way in which our company seeks to share the arts in our State. Thanks to you, our audience. You are our strongest ambassadors and your ongoing support is critical to our success. Please subscribe to the company and also consider giving your friends and family tickets to the opera for a unique Christmas or birthday gift.

CAROLYN CHARD AM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

SUPPORT US The arts, quite simply, nourish the soul. They sustain, comfort, inspire. There is nothing like that exquisite moment when you first discover the beauty of connecting with others in celebration of larger ideals and shared wisdom. (Gordon Gee) Opera is beautiful and timeless but it is also expensive, requiring hundreds of highly-skilled professionals across a range of disciplines to bring a production to life. Our donors are at the heart of what we do and assist us to put opera on the mainstage at His Majesty’s Theatre, to reach out into regional communities, to develop young artists and to enrich the cultural landscape of our State.

ANNUAL GIVING There is no question that the support from government and from the corporate sector provides the life blood for a company like ours. But it’s the support of individual philanthropy that provides our lungs. It allows us to breath, it gives us oxygen. It is the very thing that puts a spring in our step and for that we are tremendously grateful. (Andrew Pascoe, Chairman) We invite you to consider supporting West Australian Opera with a donation (donations over $2.00 are tax deductible). Every gift will assist with our work.
