FREE SPIRIT THE YEAR OF THE
Opera is about stories through the power of the singing voice. And what bigger story is there, for any of us, than the kind of lives we choose to lead? Carmen, the Vixen, Don Giovanni, and the bohemians of La Bohème are all joined by one secret thread: they
each choose to live differently, to reject convention, and to make for themselves the kind of life they want. It’s this powerful theme which binds the program together for 2018: a year of rebels, of visionaries, and of free spirits.

THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN
JANÁČEK
TARYN FIEBIG IS
For the first time the passionate and vibrant music of Janáček comes to West Australian Opera with The Cunning Little Vixen. Be transported to the forest and follow the beautifully touching tale of the vixen, Sharp Ears. This opera reflects on the nature of life, the cycle of birth and death, and the connection between the world of humans and animals. The Cunning
Little Vixen is profound theatre, an enchanting experience to be enjoyed by the whole family in a new production designed by Richard Roberts and Roger Kirk and directed by Stuart Maunder under the baton of conductor Johannes Fritzsch. One of the great masterpieces of early twentieth century music, this rarely-heard opera will be staged for four performances only.

BRAD COHEN ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
In my fourth year as Artistic Director, I welcome you warmly to our 2018 season. After the success of West Australian Opera’s fiftieth anniversary year in 2017, we looked as ever to the future of our company. And, to help us frame our discussions, we reflected on some extraordinary characters: the central roles of our four operatic productions this year. Opera celebrates a diversity of stories and styles, and in 2018 we present masterpieces from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. Puccini, Mozart, Bizet and Janáček share one thing in common: they are all master dramatists, with a powerful ability to communicate truth and story through voices and instruments. Our four operas this year are utterly distinctive, but each of them has been carefully chosen to
connect with both your ears and your heart. My Artistic Director’s pick for 2018 is The Cunning Little Vixen, Janáček’s life-affirming opera. I consider Vixen one of the greatest operas ever written, and the opportunity to bring Janáček’s music to West Australian Opera audiences for the first time is an honour. All of human (and animal) life is in this piece; it reaches out to audiences of all ages, speaking in a distinctive and enchanting voice. The live performance of opera, enjoyed with others in a shared magical space such as His Majesty’s Theatre, will always be a precious experience. We think it’s the ultimate, and I invite you to enjoy its delights with us during 2018.

HER EXCELLENCY THE HONOURABLE
KERRY SANDERSON AC GOVERNOR OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA
As Patron of West Australian Opera I am pleased to welcome you to the 2018 opera season. West Australian Opera is a resident company at the State’s beautiful His Majesty’s Theatre. The company is proud to perform with the West Australian Opera Chorus and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. For over twenty six years, our State opera company has presented City of Perth Opera in the Park, which is simulcast to regional communities, and this year on 3 February we will present Puccini’s masterpiece La Bohème in the Supreme Court Gardens. The 51st opera season is sure to bring delight to audiences of all ages with Janáček’s opera The Cunning Little Vixen,
20
boasting a sublime score and a libretto sung in English. This production will be perfect for all patrons, families and children. I note two favourites in the season follow with Bizet’s famous Carmen in July and Mozart’s classic Don Giovanni in October. I join the Chairman in acknowledging the generous support of Principal Partner Wesfarmers Arts and I thank the local, state and federal governments for their support, as well as expressing appreciation to private donors, trusts, foundations and corporate partners without whom we could not present the wonderful work that the state opera company has given us for over 50 years.
DAVID TEMPLEMAN
MINISTER FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT; HERITAGE; CULTURE AND THE ARTS
I am so excited about the 2018 season of the West Australian Opera, my first as Minister for Culture and the Arts. West Australian Opera is a key cultural institution in this State and is highly regarded by audiences in both the metropolitan and regional areas. The cultural industries are instrumental to job creation in Western Australia and will play a key role in the ongoing diversification of our economy. West Australian Opera has played an important role in our cultural development, improving community vibrancy and creating direct and indirect jobs. The company celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017 and I was particularly pleased that WAO delivered ‘Opera in the Regions’, a
regional touring series supported by the State Government, which enabled audiences to see opera concerts in the Pinnacles, Greenough, Broome and Walpole. The City of Perth Opera in the Park is a highlight each summer and, with the support of Lotterywest and Healthway, the company will present the ever-popular Puccini opera La Bohème in the Supreme Court Gardens and be simulcast live to regional centres across the State. The State Government is proud to support West Australian Opera and I wish the company every success. It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2018 season of West Australian Opera.

ANDREW PASCOE CHAIRMAN
Experience a program of heart-racing opera in 2018 in the home of opera, His Majesty’s Theatre. For fifty years we have been your state opera company and we are pleased to invite you to join us in our 51st year. We have four operas to offer you including Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, Bizet’s Carmen, Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Puccini’s La Bohème for City of Perth Opera in the Park. Presenting opera is possible only with the support of our partners and donors led by Wesfarmers Arts, our highly valued Principal Partner. I acknowledge and thank the Federal Government for the support it provides through the Australia Council; the State Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Lotterywest; local government through the City of Perth; and Healthway. The Board shares your passion for our mainstage opera productions and this will
22
always remain the bedrock of our artistic vision. But we are also determined to broaden the reach of this art form and to make it accessible to a broader audience in metropolitan and regional areas. With the support of the State government we have piloted regional performances including Opera in the Pinnacles, Opera in Greenough, Opera in Shinju Matsuri and Opera in the Valley of the Giants. These live opera experiences have been breathtaking and we are proud to innovate the way in which our company seeks to share the operatic experience throughout our State. Thank you to you, our audience. You are our strongest ambassadors: your ongoing support is critical to our success. Please subscribe to the company and also consider giving your friends and family a unique Christmas or birthday gift – tickets to the opera experience!
CAROLYN CHARD GENERAL MANAGER
Opera makes your heart beat; faster, louder, stronger. The curtain rises, the adrenaline builds, the power of the unamplified human voice fills the theatre, the blood rushes and our hearts beat for love and break for loss. We are transported to worlds both new and old, from Carmen in 19th century Seville to the forests of our wildest imagination in Vixen. These operatic stories speak to our hearts and reveal the all-consuming, heart stopping emotions that unite us as human beings. In 2018 we continue our mission to grow opera audiences and encourage the love of opera to beat strongly across our state. We are proud to return to the regions with ‘Opera in the Regions’, grow our education & community programs including Wesfarmers Arts Singing Workshops and reach new
audiences through the simulcast of City of Perth Opera in the Park. On the mainstage in the home of opera, His Majesty’s Theatre, the presentation of masterpieces of operatic repertoire will delight the opera first timer and the long-time opera lover. We appreciate the support of our donors and sponsors, particularly our Principal Partner Wesfarmers Arts, and our partnership with Healthway, civic partner City of Perth, the Minderoo Foundation and Qantas, Official Airline Partner. I thank the Chairman and Board for their continued support and encouragement. I invite you to be part of the opera family by subscribing and helping us sustain the future of opera in this state.
