We want to present opera that moves you, enchants you and makes you think about the magic of being alive in the world today.
Welcome to a new year and a new decade! Opera is a multi-dimensional artform that beautifully brings together music, movement, drama, design and more. West Australian Opera invites you in to explore the heart of the company as we reach out to all corners of our West Australian community. We want to learn, dream, laugh, think and sing with you and offer a wide range of programs for people of all ages to explore and engage with. Music, song and the arts should be accessible to all learners. Our school based programs offer teachers, students and home-schoolers an opportunity to enrich their learning experiences. Our programs offer curriculum links including but not limited to Responding, Making, Introduction of musical concepts, Historical context, Literacy, Creative and critical thinking, Intercultural understanding and Personal and social capabilities. Our community programs reach out to people of all ages and foster a sense of friendship and engagement for participants. Two singers and a pianist will share their stories in an intimate musical journey of their life. Why did they begin singing? What is their cultural background? Who are their heroes? What led them to opera? Featuring popular opera repertoire sung in different languages and lots of surprises, we invite you to discover our stories and share yours. This work supports the West Australian Music Curriculum and encourages students to express and quantify their thoughts and feelings.
Your voice is your own mobile instrument so let’s have some fun and Sing out loud! Suitable for choirs and non-singers alike and with direct links to the West Australian Music Curriculum together we will explore rhythm, tempo, pitch, dynamics, form and singing in Italian before joining our artists in a final aria. Students will be physically engaged from start to finish. Get in fast! This workshop series books out quickly.

Hansel and Gretel can’t sleep. They toss and turn before deciding to embark on a midnight adventure into the forest. Along the way they meet some curious creatures, learn how to sing in cat language and finally magic their way back home. This exciting, interactive, crazy musical adventure is a fresh take on a classic fairytale. Featuring the works of Rossini, Ravel, Bizet, Humperdinck and more, this incursion provides a term of learning across multiple curriculum areas.
West Australian Opera is committed to supporting our teachers and community directors in the promotion of choral singing and performance. We will provide assistance in preparing students for choral based performances and/or individual school based musical productions. Our staff will work with, and support you in whatever capacity you require assistance with. Performance motivation, vocal warm ups, preparation, repertoire challenges, listening and supportive feedback. Our artists are encouraging, sympathetic and have the ability to work with participants and directors alike.

Workshops ACT-BELONG-COMMIT WACE WORKSHOP Supported by UWA Conservatorium of Music Year 11 and 12 music students are invited to join us for a practical workshop that aims to provide students with real-world demonstrations, discussion and suggestions for the performance of tasks and assessments in relation to their ATAR examinations. Featuring artists of West Australian Opera, UWA Conservatorium of Music and facilitated by Nikki Sullivan Program Coordinator Voice/ Piano Instrumental Music School Services. Book now! WESFARMERS ARTS PRODUCTION WORKSHOP
Our most popular workshop. Students of all ages will be completely immersed in this practical, hands on workshop. Our professional, industry make-up artist will demonstrate stagecraft techniques in the creation of a character including ageing, bruising and blood then it’s over to you to experiment with products and create your own dramatic personality.
West Australian Opera gives your students an exclusive backstage pass to the mysterious and hidden world of theatre. Experience a two hour hands on workshop exploring the elements that make an opera production come to life including lighting, stage management and flying. Workshops are conducted by professional, practicing industry staff.

Be the first to see this brand new work! Based on the true story of Tupaia, a Tahitian navigator who sailed with James Cook on the Endeavour. A truly beautiful and haunting work it explores the 1770 meeting of two master mariners from two very different places and cultures.
This is your chance to explore and initiate discussion of Oratorio works. Based on the Old Testament prophet Elijah, this work premiered in 1846 to an audience of over 2000 people and was declared a success by audience and reviewers alike. Join us for this tale of faith, doubt and miracles.

Join us for an incredible night of theatre. We invite teachers and secondary students to join us pre-performance for refreshments and a personalised introduction to the opera work. Meet artists and likeminded students in a casual environment and explore the work you are about to see.
We invite you to join West Australian Opera for a year of discovering the multiple layers of presenting an opera, meeting our team, participating in workshops and discovering backstage secrets. Open to all secondary students in years 9 to 12 our Youth Ambassador program is a hub of activity, energy, ideas and enthusiasm of emerging artists, creators, administrators and audiences. WESFARMERS ARTS SINGING CLASSES Suitable for 18 years + Whether you are an absolute beginner or seasoned singer we want to share with you the unique experience of being part of an opera chorus environment. Together we will explore a diverse range of repertoire and gain professional insight into best practice and vocal technique. In 2020 our classes will conclude with an exciting end of season performance to showcase your talent and the skills you’ve mastered. SEASON ONE Monday 09 March to Monday 11 May You are invited to participate in a new collaboration between West Australian Opera, By Other Eyes and the UWA Conservatorium of Music. Participants will have the option to sing on stage at the Perth Concert Hall with Soprano Sara Macliver and Baritone Andrew Foote and accompanied by the University of Western Australia Conservatorium of Music Symphony Orchestra. All repertoire will be sung in English. SEASON TWO Monday 24 August to Monday 19 October A return to traditional choral repertoire. You are invited to join our Wesfarmers Arts Young Artists, accompanied by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, to sing on the stage of His Majesty’s Theatre in a premiere gala concert.
Classes are offered at beginner and intermediate levels and in 8 week blocks. Starting with the basics of vocal production and an introduction to aural training. Participants will experience various styles and traditions of operatic singing. 7.30PM INTERMEDIATE Aimed at those with some singing experience, this stream will help to refine and develop singing skills through singing technique and the rehearsal of more advanced repertoire from the operatic cannon. Participants will walk away with a deeper understanding of ensemble singing and the artistic possibilities it can portray.
