olour your world with opera. 2021 celebrates the power of sung stories with colourful tales of humour, hope, passion and purpose, that are utterly human. This is a year for joy, rediscovery and reconnection with the arts and with each other. We hope you’re moved, delighted, challenged, and entertained by West Australian Opera 2021.

CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA

PAGLIACCI

ELIJAH

THE BARBER OF SEVILLE

CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA MASCAGNI Love, betrayal and revenge all play out in a quiet village in a rural corner of Italy. Emotions run high as fidelity is tested and hearts broken in this tale that will resonate with you for the powerful raw depictions of everyday life, in all its heartbreaking and beautiful complexities. In a cast that showcases the world class talent of Western Australian artists, Cavalleria rusticana will be paired with Pagliacci, often referred to as ‘Cav & Pag’. This classic one act pairing has often been celebrated as the birth of verismo, a style of music drama, depicting the crude passions of everyday people rather than the exploits of kings, queens and gods.

PAGLIACCI LEONCAVALLO A travelling troupe stage a comedy about a betrayed husband and his beautiful, flirtatious wife. But life runs very close to art in this tale of love, lust and heartbreak, when acting suddenly becomes a very dangerous game… In a classic pairing of the two operas Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci, these stories and the music that surrounds them have become some of the most loved in the world of opera. Caruso’s recording of the aria “Vesti la giubba” was the first single record to sell over a million copies. Featuring a cast that showcases Western Australian artists, this opera will remind you of the trials of the heart, that transcend age, time, and place.

THE BENDAT FAMILY FOUNDATION PRESENTS

STAR NAVIGATOR TIM FINN Ihitai ‘Avei’a

Based on the true story of Tupaia, a Tahitian star navigator who sailed with James Cook on the Endeavour, this beautiful and haunting work explores the 1769 meeting of two master mariners, each from a vastly different place and culture, both proud of their knowledge and unwavering in their ambition. The opera delves into the minds of these two navigators of genius and the gulf of belief that, despite their common love of the sea and thirst for exploration, stops them from finding their way into each other’s world. Set sail on this journey and let the music lift you up to the stars. Star Navigator is a new work composed by Tim Finn with Tahitian monologues by Celestine Vaite. Originally commissioned by West Australian Opera, New Zealand Opera and Victorian Opera and supported by the state government of Western Australia.

Koolbardi the Magpie and Wardong the Crow are two very proud, vain, jealous brothers. Watch as their cunning, their rivalry and one-upmanship brings them unstuck in spectacular fashion. Set on Noongar Boodja (the south west corner of Western Australia), we invite you to join us for a journey back to the Nyittiny, the time of Creation, where love, loyalty, betrayal and jealousy are all stretched to their limits. Because pride always comes before the fall. Award winning songwriters and storytellers, Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse weave magic in a world first, brought to life under the deft direction of Matt Reuben James Ward. MARRIAGE

FIGARO MOZART

A comedy of servants and masters changing places, pageboys playing at soldiers, ruined flowerbeds and night time trysts form the backdrop to some of the most beautiful music ever written. This work celebrates one idea, that true love is life’s most valuable gift and should be nurtured, cherished and fought for. Mozart’s masterpiece picks up the story sometime after the events of The Barber of Seville and this time it is Figaro’s turn to find love, however his fiancée, Susanna, is being pursued by the Count, much to the dismay of the Countess. This is a work of charm, wit and beauty, presented in a new production, directed by Patrick Nolan and conducted by Christopher van Tuinen. An Opera Queensland production. This production premieres on 15th July 2021 in Brisbane, Australia

If 2020 taught us anything, it is to cherish what is close to us. And yet, for a global village of opera professionals this has meant separation from audiences, colleagues, music & drama. Fortunately for WAO, while we lost a major part of our season (and the associated activity that goes with it), we’ve been spared the length of disruption to the artform still being felt elsewhere. We’re also blessed with an innovative team who moved online and into the Ghost Light with the aplomb of seasoned Film and TV content producers. None of which could have happened without the support of our audiences, the artists, funding bodies, sponsors, donors, and our board who stood by us through this time. So, the 2021 Season is a product of all these events, it celebrates the joy of live performance while keeping connected with our new digital friends. It reinforces our long-standing policies to cast with WA artists first, to give emerging artists opportunities to grow, and to work with a wide range of diverse communities. WAO 2021 will celebrate a milestone for Opera in the Park, will see two new productions for Perth involving a man called Figaro, will launch collaborations with the tertiary sector and regional communities, visit the heartland of Italian verismo, watch our star navigator set sail, and show respect for the oldest continuous living culture by presenting the first indigenous opera performed in Noongar. We hope you’re moved, delighted, challenged, and entertained by WAO 2021.

We cherish those near and far, celebrating a return to live performance and new connections

West Australian Opera’s 2021 program is a celebration of Western Australian talent, with reconnection and joy at the very heart of our offerings. I am always delighted to see the annual return of the free family event City of Perth Opera in the Park, a summertime favourite that celebrates its 30th anniversary in February 2021 with two special gala concert performances. It’s wonderful to see a new Wesfarmers Arts Commission of Koolbardi wer Wardong, (the Magpie and the Crow) which is an opera for young people to be performed in Noongar and

written by our brilliant local artists Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse. The 2021 program is filled with diverse stories, superb Western Australian talent and rich collaborations. More than ever the arts need the support of their communities, particularly as we navigate this COVID19 environment together. I applaud the company’s supporters and especially Wesfarmers Arts who have for many years taken a leadership position in supporting the arts in Western Australia and who are West Australian Opera’s Principal Partner.

It is our dream to share the power of opera with as many Western Australians as we can

Presenting opera is possible only with the support of our partners and donors, patrons and government. We are both fortunate and proud to benefit from the leadership in this area by Principal Partner Wesfarmers Arts, who have been the foundation of our partnership portfolio for many years and who have renewed for a further five years, a magnificent contribution in these COVID19 times. I acknowledge and thank the Federal Government for the support it provides through the Australia Council, the State Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Lotterywest, and local government through the City of Perth and Healthway with the message Act Belong Commit. The Board, management, company, artists and I are grateful to our patrons and the broader opera family who continue to offer enormous moral and financial support as we navigate the COVID19 environment together. We are excited to present you with the 2021 season and we know you will understand that we continue to work under challenging conditions which may mean that we need to vary or cancel a performance or season. This is a program filled with diverse stories that celebrate Western Australian talent, local connections and journeys of joy and self-discovery. We are proud to innovate the way in which our company seeks to share opera in our State and we are thrilled to return to the stage. We also invite you to connect via our digital channels that will feature live streamed concerts & performances, virtual classes and bespoke operatic content for your enjoyment.

Andrew McKinnon in association with West Australian Opera presents

JOSEPH CALLEJA The Maltese Tenor

Blessed with a golden-age voice which inspires comparisons to legendary singers from earlier eras, Joseph Calleja is a superstar at all the world’s greatest opera houses and concert halls. His extensive discography includes a thrilling Verdi album and a hugely popular tribute to Mario Lanza, whilst his performance of Puccini’s famous ‘Nessun dorma’ at The Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall was nothing short of electrifying. In this, his eagerly anticipated debut Australian tour, the Maltese born lyric tenor described as the young Pavarotti will be joined by two of Australia’s best loved artists, soprano Amelia Farrugia, who is also of Maltese heritage, and internationally acclaimed pianist Piers Lane, in an unforgettable performance.

The arts enrich our lives, bringing us moments of joy and connecting us with our humanity We invite you to colour your world with opera. There is much evidence to support our belief that the arts enrich our lives, bringing us moments of joy and sharing important stories that connect us with our humanity. As we navigate COVID19, there has never been a greater need for the power of the arts to reconnect us to our community, rewire our hearts and paint fresh colours of hope. Our dream is to speak to the heart through the human voice. We share the joy of music through opera and the powerful stories opera tells. We are uniquely and proudly Western Australian and we bring audiences and artists together to celebrate sung stories that are relevant to our people, time and places. The 2021 program is filled with works that embody our vision. From local cast who will bring the match-making Barber of

Seville to life, to the hundreds of local students from the University of Western Australian who will perform in Elijah, to the new Wesfarmers Arts Commission Koolbardi wer Wardong, a story unique to Noongar Boodja and to a very special commission which I am proud will be presented in Perth after several years of commissioning and workshopping, Star Navigator by Tim Finn OBE. We look forward to welcoming you to the theatre in 2021 while noting that everything may be a little different as we keep your health and safety at the forefront. We appreciate your ongoing support and patronage as we continue to work in this new world with colourful optimism, bold and fresh programming and casting from Chris van Tuinen and, of course, glorious music. My thanks to our team of staff and colleagues who give their all to bringing our works to life for you.
