CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA MASCAGNI Love, betrayal and revenge all play out in a quiet village in a rural corner of Italy. Emotions run high as fidelity is tested and hearts broken in this tale that will resonate with you for the powerful raw depictions of everyday life, in all its heartbreaking and beautiful complexities. In a cast that showcases the world class talent of Western Australian artists, Cavalleria rusticana will be paired with Pagliacci, often referred to as ‘Cav & Pag’. This classic one act pairing has often been celebrated as the birth of verismo, a style of music drama, depicting the crude passions of everyday people rather than the exploits of kings, queens and gods.

PAGLIACCI LEONCAVALLO A travelling troupe stage a comedy about a betrayed husband and his beautiful, flirtatious wife. But life runs very close to art in this tale of love, lust and heartbreak, when acting suddenly becomes a very dangerous game… In a classic pairing of the two operas Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci, these stories and the music that surrounds them have become some of the most loved in the world of opera. Caruso’s recording of the aria “Vesti la giubba” was the first single record to sell over a million copies. Featuring a cast that showcases Western Australian artists, this opera will remind you of the trials of the heart, that transcend age, time, and place.

STAR NAVIGATOR TIM FINN Ihitai ‘Avei’a

Based on the true story of Tupaia, a Tahitian star navigator who sailed with James Cook on the Endeavour, this beautiful and haunting work explores the 1769 meeting of two master mariners, each from a vastly different place and culture, both proud of their knowledge and unwavering in their ambition. The opera delves into the minds of these two navigators of genius and the gulf of belief that, despite their common love of the sea and thirst for exploration, stops them from finding their way into each other’s world. Set sail on this journey and let the music lift you up to the stars. Star Navigator is a new work composed by Tim Finn with Tahitian monologues by Celestine Vaite. Originally commissioned by West Australian Opera, New Zealand Opera and Victorian Opera and supported by the state government of Western Australia.

A comedy of servants and masters changing places, pageboys playing at soldiers, ruined flowerbeds and night time trysts form the backdrop to some of the most beautiful music ever written. This work celebrates one idea, that true love is life’s most valuable gift and should be nurtured, cherished and fought for. Mozart’s masterpiece picks up the story sometime after the events of The Barber of Seville and this time it is Figaro’s turn to find love, however his fiancée, Susanna, is being pursued by the Count, much to the dismay of the Countess. This is a work of charm, wit and beauty, presented in a new production, directed by Patrick Nolan and conducted by Christopher van Tuinen. An Opera Queensland production. If 2020 taught us anything, it is to cherish what is close to us. And yet, for a global village of opera professionals this has meant separation from audiences, colleagues, music & drama. Fortunately for WAO, while we lost a major part of our season (and the associated activity that goes with it), we’ve been spared the length of disruption to the artform still being felt elsewhere. We’re also blessed with an innovative team who moved online and into the Ghost Light with the aplomb of seasoned Film and TV content producers. None of which could have happened without the support of our audiences, the artists, funding bodies, sponsors, donors, and our board who stood by us through this time. So, the 2021 Season is a product of all these events, it celebrates the joy of live performance while keeping connected with our new digital friends. It reinforces our long-standing policies to cast with WA artists first, to give emerging artists opportunities to grow, and to work with a wide range of diverse communities. WAO 2021 will celebrate a milestone for Opera in the Park, will see two new productions for Perth involving a man called Figaro, will launch collaborations with the tertiary sector and regional communities, visit the heartland of Italian verismo, watch our star navigator set sail, and show respect for the oldest continuous living culture by presenting the first indigenous opera performed in Noongar. I am always delighted to see the annual return of the free family event City of Perth Opera in the Park, a summertime favourite that celebrates its 30th anniversary in February 2021 with two special gala concert performances. In 2021 we can look forward to the return of live performance with a variety of works from grand opera in His Majesty’s Theatre, to the magnificent outdoor regional concerts in our beautiful Western Australian locations. Western Australian Opera deepens its investment in local artists, young talent and emerging creatives, with a program that celebrates Western Australia. The City of Perth Opera in the Park is a highlight each summer and with the support of Lotterywest, the company will present A Gala Concert in celebration of the 30 years of Opera in the Park. In the regions the company will tour Education and Community outreach programs and work with local youth choirs and adult singers as part of the company’s commitment to nurturing new talent. Blessed with a golden-age voice which inspires comparisons to legendary singers from earlier eras, Joseph Calleja is a superstar at all the world’s greatest opera houses and concert halls. His extensive discography includes a thrilling Verdi album and a hugely popular tribute to Mario Lanza, whilst his performance of Puccini’s famous ‘Nessun dorma’ at The Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall was nothing short of electrifying.
