The Merry Widow was the runaway hit of its period. The beauty of the music, the glamour charm all combine to seduce the audience, just as the characters on stage seduce each other. This is a comedy of manners, with money as its secret motivating force. The Merry Widow deals with couples in love, misunderstandings, evasive ending. Art deco glamour, silky ballroom gowns and dapper gents complete this charming operetta. This production was commissioned by the Opera Conference, Australia’s national partnership of professional companies. This brandopera new production, directed by Graeme Murphy, will open its Australian run in Perth.

ruin. Its best hope is that Hanna, a young rich widow and heiress, should marry a Pontevedrian and keep her fortune in Pontevedro. The Pontevedrian embassy in Paris holds a state ball, to which Hanna and her former lover Danilo are invited. It turns out that Hanna was poor before her marriage and Danilo’s uncle forbade their other guests at the ball Hanna and Danilo reconcile. ACT 2 The next evening, at a ball at Hanna’s mansion, two entanglements continue: Hanna with Danilo, and Valencienne with Camille, all involving a fan with the inscription “I love you” on it. ACT 3 On the third evening a ball is again held at Hanna’s mansion, decorated as the popular nightclub Maxim’s. The intrigue tightens as Hanna reveals that, should she remarry, she will lose her fortune. Despite this news, Danilo declares his love for her. Then Hanna triumphantly reveals that she will lose her fortune because it will become the property of her new husband!

West Australian Opera heads for gold

Annie Patrick

In 1967 the state opera company was constituted and since then has presented opera in various locations. In 1980 West Australian Opera moved into the newly refurbished His Majesty’s Theatre. It was a golden opportunity and the beautiful Edwardian theatre has continued to be the home of opera and has formed the base for an outreaching organisation, producing staged works in Perth and educational activities state-wide. 1990 heralded the introduction of Opera in the Park with a free concert performance of Strauss’s Die Fledermaus which drew a capacity audience to Supreme Court Gardens. The company will present a free 50th Gala Concert there on 4 February 2017 which will be simulcast to regional centres with the support of Lotterywest.

18

In 1993 the Young Artists Programme was established by Artistic Director, Lindy Hume and Head of Music, Marilyn Phillips. Alumni, such as tenors Aldo di Toro (1995-6) and Paul O’Neill (2004-5), soprano Rachelle Durkin (1997-98), and mezzo Caitlin Hulcup (2000) have established international careers, and have returned to sing roles with the Company. Other alumni, including sopranos Sara Macliver (1996), Katja Webb (2007) and Jennifer Barrington (2009), mezzos Fiona Campbell (1993) and Sarah Janet Brittenden (2004-6) have pursued their careers in Australia and New Zealand. James Clayton (2006-7) returns regularly and has sung many roles including Papageno in The Magic Flute, Count di Luna in Il Trovatore and Iago in Otello.

In 1994 the Opera Conference, a consortium of Australia’s state opera companies, was formed and many new productions have been presented through this partnership, including The Merry Widow which opens in Perth in this new Opera Conference production in July 2017.

During his tenure he carried out these aims, particularly in his composition and production of two new operas: Batavia (2004) assisted by Head of Music Marilyn Phillips, and The Love of the Nightingale (2007) assisted by Head of Music, Francis Greep.

In 1996 Richard Mills, one of Australia’s most eminent composers was appointed Artistic Director and he continued in this role for 15 years, saying at the time:

Mills was succeeded as Artistic Director in 2013 by Maestro Joseph Colaneri after seven years as a guest conductor. He conducted many main house productions and facilitated scholarships for four Young Artists to enter the prestigious Mannes College in New York where he is Artistic Director of the Opera department.

The process of developing my Opera involved meeting two distinct selection of standard repertoire operas, rightly loved by the public and secondly, addressing the responsibility of developing opera within a WA context… through imaginative and creative projects.

novel, and The Pearl Fishers in his own orchestral Peters edition. No recap of WAO’s history would be complete without mentioning the leadership and support of the General Manager Carolyn Chard. She has perceived and seized every golden opportunity available to her long serving Production Manager Mandy Farmer and Stage Manager Karen Farmer, both of whom have been with the company for three decades, and no doubt Chard will be playing a major role as WAO reaches for Gold in 2017. Annie Patrick August 2016

In 2015 Colaneri was succeeded by conductor Brad Cohen. In 2016 he conducted The Riders, a new Australian opera composed by Iain Grandage based on Tim Winton’s

Hon John Day MLA Minister for Culture and the Arts

I congratulate West Australian Opera on its 50th anniversary and am pleased that the Liberal National Government, through the Department of Culture and the Arts, has been able to support the 2017 celebrations. Upcoming productions include Puccini’s Tosca, classically staged, The Merry Widow, and Lucia di Lammermoor in the production made famous by Dame Joan Sutherland, who herself was a Patron of West Australian Opera for many years.

The City of Perth’s Opera in the Park is a highlight each summer and with the support of Lotterywest this year’s 50th Gala Concert in the Supreme Court Gardens will be simulcast to regional centres across the State. be a source of pride for West Australians. Growing audiences and encouraging the love of opera are key priorities. Opera trades in human emotion and the work you see on stage is the culmination of many talents weaving grand stories through grand imaginations. For 50 years West Australian Opera has told stories. We’ve staged world class opera, we’ve premiered new work, we’ve employed local artists and we’ve mentored young talent who have gone on to successful international careers. We have been your state opera company and year. We take pride in being custodians of the artform and we take this responsibility seriously presenting popular opera, lesser known repertoire and new work. A new work commissioned from Tim Finn OBE in partnership with New Zealand Opera and Victorian Opera is part of an ongoing

pursuit of collaboration between Australian and international opera companies. I acknowledge the new work the company presented under long serving Artistic Director Richard Mills AM including his own commissions Batavia and The Love of the Nightingale as well as presenting Götterdämmerung, Elektra, Peter Grimes, and The Flowering Tree which we were proud to present with Perth International Arts Festival. We appreciate the support of our donors and sponsors, particularly Principal Partner Wesfarmers Arts, and partnerships with Partner who support travel to Western Australia for artists, conductors, artistic director and creative teams. I thank the Chairman and Board for their continued support and encouragement. I invite you to celebrate with us by dressing up for the 50th Gala Concert in black tie, evening dress or costume at City of Perth’s Opera in the Park on Saturday 4 February.

Brad Cohen Artistic Director West Australian Opera

I am proud to be Artistic Director as West Australian Opera reaches its 50th anniversary milestone, and to share opera’s emotional dynamism with you. This celebratory season is bound together, as always, by stories. Three women, Tosca, Hanna and Lucia, act to secure their freedom at moments of decision, defying attempts to control them by means of money, power or violence. Two productions new to Perth
