WEST AUSTRALIAN OPERA 2022

E

MPOWERED, HOPEFUL, BOLD & DARING. A year that celebrates stories of passion and purpose, of courage and confidence, of hope and heroines. These are the stories of WAO 2022 and we welcome you to share in them, connect to them and be inspired by them.

WACA GROUND 7.30pm | 25 & 26 February

Summer nights in Perth set the stage for searing passions in Spain, as Carmen takes over the iconic WACA Ground. In a large scale outdoor arena spectacular, Bizet’s indisputable masterpiece, Carmen, is staged with all the trimmings, performed by over 150 singers and musicians. The historic cricket grounds, the scene of many epic conflicts, plays host to the loves, betrayals, celebrations and tragedies of one of opera’s greatest stories. Carmen is a bold, daring working class woman, living life as a free spirit. She sets her sights on Escamillo, inciting jealousy in her powerful lover Don José. Hatching a plan to end this epic love triangle and gain her freedom, will the fiery Carmen outsmart Don José or will her betrayal lead to shocking consequences? Australian singers bring to life this memorable story through arias such as the famous Habanera and the Toreador’s Song with tremendous local talent from the West Australian Opera Chorus, the WAO Children’s Chorus, featuring the next generation of rising stars, and the full might of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.

Tchaikovsky’s last opera tells the tale of a beautiful woman who falls in love. At least, that’s all it should be about. Instead, we witness the story of a woman who is held captive, not by her blindness, but by the ignorance and assumptions of those around her. In a world premiere production, WAO has worked with the vision impaired community of Perth to update the libretto and develop a production that tells the story from Iolanta’s view. True to the sumptuous beauty of Tchaikovsky’s music, this season will have more than soaring voices and sweeping melodies. The production will take the audience on a journey to discover the lived experience of people with vision impairment, to see the world the way they see it, in a truly immersive event experience.

GOVERNMENT HOUSE BALLROOM 7pm | 12, 13, 14, 15 May Subject to COVID19 restrictions

Was this music’s greatest competition? In 1786 a standoff was held in one of the world’s most lavish palaces. Joseph II (Holy Roman Emperor) had set his tame composers a challenge, pitting the Italian opera style against the German ‘singspiel’. With both pieces performed on the same night, at stake was more than pride, the winner would be feted with commissions and patrons, the loser, fighting for scraps. In one corner, the established Antonio Salieri set an opera buffa entitled Prima la musica e poi le parole (First the Music, then the Words) and in the other corner the still upstart Wolfgang Mozart, flying the nationalistic flag with his comedy Der Schauspieldirektor (The Impresario). For this re-creation, we invite you to get up close and personal in the intimate surrounds of Government House Ballroom with stages at either end, dinner with your friends and a time machine back to the eighteenth century. Decide for yourself who wins – Mozart or Salieri?

What would you do for art? What would you do for love? Would you sacrifice your body and soul for the one you love? Would you risk torture and death over a cause and for the sake of friendship? How far can one person’s evil carry them before revenge strikes? Tosca asks all these questions in three acts of glorious music, driving the lovers Tosca and Cavaradossi into the clutches of Baron Scarpia in ever increasing circles of dramatic tension. In a beautiful new production from Opera Queensland, an extraordinary cast of Australian singers bring this masterpiece to life with a feast of singing to move the heart and transport the mind.

Our Little Inventor tells the story of Nell, a young girl from the countryside, who creates a machine to fix the pollution that is choking the big city. Despite her excitement at showing off her invention, the people in charge do not share her enthusiasm to save their environment. This is a tale for people of all ages to share together, incorporating gentle humour that touches upon themes of climate change, resilience, perseverance, and the importance of family and friends.

One of the greatest romances of all time sees the courtesan Violetta and the aristocratic Alfredo fall into a love that destroys them both. Set against the limits of society’s expectations, and driven by the demands of Alfredo’s father, she makes a decision to save him and sacrifice her love, and in doing so, pays the ultimate price. Party scenes and virtuosic singing contrast with moments of aching tenderness, constantly moving the action forward with endless melodic invention. Whether you’re a first timer or seasoned opera lover, La traviata never disappoints, reminding us that great story telling with great music is timeless. Verdi’s masterpiece is lovingly recreated in a brand-new production directed by Australian Sarah Giles and features an extraordinary cast of singers with Paul O’Neill and introducing Samantha Clarke in her role debut as Violetta.

YOUNG ARTISTS WESFARMERS ARTS

“WAO is committed to supporting artists at all stages of their careers but especially as they make the transition from full time study to full time performing. It’s during this period that a Young Artist Program can be most valuable, providing on the job training, mentoring, coaching, and most important, first hand experience at the craft of a professional opera artist. This unique experience, both on and off the stage, wouldn’t be possible without our supporters, mentors, and staff, so to them our thanks.” – Chris van Tuinen. West Australian Opera and Wesfarmers Arts congratulate the 2022 program recipients including Bella Marslen (soprano), Jillian Halleron (soprano), Ammon Bennett (tenor), Jake Bigwood (bass) and Kate McNamara (conductor). The Wesfarmers Young Artist Program offers a mentorship experience for Western Australia’s most talented young artists that includes coaching, masterclasses and performance.

The program aims to develop technical skills and stagecraft. The support of Wesfarmers Arts and the Bendat Family Foundation, who support the Bendat Scholarship, has seen graduates build successful careers on opera stages locally, nationally and internationally. The five outstanding artists chosen will work closely with WAO Artistic Director, Chris van Tuinen and Patron, Emma Matthews over the next twelve months.

Opera, at its best, reflects both the timelessness of great art and the trials, joys, and loves of modern life. Opera, at its best, reflects both the timelessness of great art and the trials, joys, and loves of modern life. This connection between the old and the new feels more relevant as we look back across the last couple of years and remember old freedoms and cherished connections. We also think about new ways of gathering and sharing, with the understanding that nothing can replace the feeling of being in the same room with powerful music, stories and voices. After 30 years as Opera in the Park we’re moving to present a fully staged, arena spectacular of Carmen at the iconic WACA Ground. Big sets, big costumes, big music, big voices, and big emotions are set to embrace Perth’s summer nights in a series of concerts for all comers. The Australian premiere of Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta tells the story of a young girl’s first steps into an understanding of her blindness and her place in the world. We’ve worked with the vision impaired community in Perth to create a new libretto and a new production. A world first for Perth and a unique experience not to be missed. We’ll also take over Government House Ballroom to recreate the competition between Mozart and

Salieri that occurred in Vienna in 1786, and we’ve commissioned the next Opera for Young People based on the book Our Little Inventor. Patrick Nolan’s gorgeous new 1970’s inspired production of Tosca fills the theatre in the middle of the year and a brand-new production of La traviata gets cherished and challenged by the extraordinary Sarah Giles. Australian talent is always featured in everything we do and we’re particularly happy to invite back some exquisite West Australian singers to the company for the first time. The best conductors, directors, artists, singers and musicians sit at the heart of this season, reminding us that there’s something special about this part of the world. None of which would be possible without our supporters, in audiences, corporates, governments, donors and artists. My heartfelt thanks to them and also to our board, and the remarkable WAO team, delightfully led by the unstoppable Carolyn Chard. I hope you enjoy WAO 2022 and see you at the opera.

A CELEBRATION OF WEST AUSTRALIAN OPERA AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE. IMAGE BY DYLAN ALCOCK

West Australian Opera celebrates our local performers and offers pathways to participation and engagement. As Vice Regal Patron of the state opera company, I am proud of our Western Australian creators, artists and cultural sector.

performed in Noongar language and Our Little Inventor, based on the text Sher Rill Ng set in the Australian outback.

West Australian Opera celebrates our local performers and offers pathways to participation and engagement, with works for young people, singing classes, regional tours and workshops, as well as the wonderful repertoire we see on the mainstage.

Our state opera company plays a vital role in connecting communities right across this great state.

It is wonderful to also see a new initiative that will take the popular opera Carmen into the WACA Ground for two performances in February.

The company’s excellence is recognised through its generous supporters and especially their Principal Partner Wesfarmers Arts, who have for many years taken a leadership position in supporting the arts in Western Australia.

I am very pleased to also hear that West Australian Opera is commissioning a new work that speaks to our place with a tour of Koolbardi wer Wardong

The Honourable KIM BEAZLEY AC Governor of Western Australia

KOOLBARDI WER WARDONG IMAGE BY JAMES ROGERS

The McGowan Government is proud to support West Australian Opera and I wish the company every success. West Australian Opera is a key cultural institution in this State, highly regarded by audiences in metropolitan and regional areas. I am pleased to see our state opera company performing in its home theatre, His Majesty’s Theatre, which is currently undergoing restoration works to reinstate the original balconies. In another exciting development, the company will be taking opera to the WACA during 2022 to host the event spectacle of Carmen. We celebrate all things Western Australian, and I note the company deepening its investment in local artists, young talent and emerging creatives on the mainstage and through education and outreach programs.

The company will tour the Noongar language new work Koolbardi wer Wardong by Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse, which is based on a traditional Noongar story. With the support of State Government Playing WA funding, the show will tour to the corners of the Noongar nation including to Albany, Esperance, Kalgoorlie and Bunbury in 2022/3; and each of these tours will pick up a local children’s chorus to learn language. The McGowan Government is proud to support West Australian Opera and I wish the company every success. It is my pleasure to invite you to attend the 2022 season of West Australian Opera.

Presenting opera is only possible with the support of our partners, patrons, donors and government. Presenting opera is only possible with the support of our partners, patrons, donors and government. The Board, management, company and artists are grateful to the entire opera family who support your State Opera Company and enable us to continue to share the power of opera with you. I acknowledge and thank the Federal Government for the support it provides through the Australia Council, the State Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Lotterywest, and local government through the City of Perth and Healthway with the message ‘Act Belong Commit’. We have a program that promotes and celebrates Western Australian talent, with stories of hope and passion, presented in iconic locations. We are proud to innovate the way in which our company seeks to share opera in our State. We offer you a new outdoor spectacle with Carmen taking place at the WACA Ground, a new staging of the rarely performed Iolanta with our collaborators at DADAA, and a season in the Government House Ballroom

for the famous musical contest between Mozart and Salieri, The Duel 1786. Part of our mission as your State Opera Company is to strive to connect the broad community of Western Australia through performing arts. We want the joy of opera to be accessible to as many Western Australians as possible, through regional touring, digital access and innovative venues that bring Opera to life. We are passionate about, and committed to, enhancing the cultural and artistic tapestry of Western Australia; leveraging the storytelling power of music and the human voice to build bridges across our State with a mindset of cultural inclusiveness and diversity in its broadest sense. We are excited about our 2022 season, and hope you share in this excitement and enjoy the operatic experiences on offer.

Our dream is to speak to the heart through the human voice.

The arts engender a sense of hope with stories that speak to our hearts and stir our souls. These stories transcend time and place. At the core, these stories cause us to reflect on the human condition, to ponder our fears, our flaws, our trials and our triumphs. Recent times have proven just how resilient we can be, and this passion and hope we carry is the foundation of the 2022 season. Our dream is to speak to the heart through the human voice. We want to share the joy of music through opera and the powerful stories opera tells. We are uniquely and proudly Western Australian and we bring audiences and artists together to celebrate sung stories that are relevant to our people, time, and places. In 2022 we offer audiences works that celebrate stories of passion, hope and celebration. We have

collaborated with colleagues from Perth Festival, Victorian Opera, Opera Queensland, State Opera South Australia, DADAA, the AWESOME Festival, Conservatorium of Music UWA, WA Young Voices, WA Youth Orchestra. We welcome you to the theatre, the ballroom, the WACA Ground, schools and regional WA. We appreciate your ongoing support and patronage. We will continue to strive to bring you art that will warm your heart and stir your soul with hope and passion. I acknowledge that we live and work on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja.

Andrew McKinnon in association with West Australian Opera presents

JOSEPH CALLEJA The Maltese Tenor

Blessed with a golden-age voice which inspires comparisons to legendary singers from earlier eras, Joseph Calleja is a superstar at all the world’s greatest opera houses and concert halls. His extensive discography includes a thrilling Verdi album and a hugely popular tribute to Mario Lanza, whilst his performance of Puccini’s famous ‘Nessun dorma’ at The Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall was nothing short of electrifying. In this, his eagerly anticipated debut Australian tour, the Maltese born lyric tenor described as the young Pavarotti will be joined by two of Australia’s best loved artists, soprano Amelia Farrugia, who is also of Maltese heritage, and internationally acclaimed pianist Piers Lane, in an unforgettable performance.
