Getting a home playoff game in the Section 8AAAA bracket against Detroit Lakes, a last-second prayer fell incomplete and ended the season with a 41-40 loss. “That’s something that’s been
on the kids’ minds throughout the offseason. (The) emphasis on twoa-days has been that we had a good football team last year and we kind of let that one go,” said Cardinals head coach Jon Konold. “The kids want to bounce back from that, and they know they have a lot of returning guys that have played a lot of football.”
Konold continued, “They want to be a lot better. They want to be in the position where they have a first-round bye and a home game.” The Cardinals’ offense has plenty to work with, returning nine of the team’s 11 starters from a unit that

averaged 30.3 points per game in 2017. And it’s at the skill positions where Willmar has most of its starters back. A three-year starter at safety, Drey Dirksen got his chance to play quarterback last year for five games after Donald Jurek suffered a shoulder injury. Dirksen threw for 854 yards with nine touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 53.6 percent of his passes. He also led Willmar with 383 rushing yards on 87 carries. That five-game audition gave the 6-foot-3, 180-pound All-District pick a foundation to build upon for his senior season. “We just talked the other day, actually, and I said, ‘You look a lot more comfortable. You’re making the reads really good,’ and (Dirksen) goes, ‘I just understand the offense so much better,’” Konold said. “‘The defense is slowing down for me a little bit and I’m finding my guys and knowing where everybody’s at.’ … We’re hoping he can continue to grow and get better.” While last year’s top receiver — Noah Slagter (58 catches, 568 yards, eight touchdowns) — graduated along with two other starters at wideout, honorable mention All-District selections in Jake Evans and Ty Roelofs will line up wide for the Cardinals, along with WR/RB Caleb Owens and wideouts Kadin Larsson, Ryan Slette and Ben Hisken. Ethan Roux returns at running back after scoring eight rushing touchdowns to go with 348 yards on the ground. On defense, the linebacker and defensive back units are ripe with returning talent with five of the team’s top six tacklers from 2017 back in the lineup. Konold said six players will be vying for playing time at linebacker. Defensive lineman Andrew Reigstad anchors the defense after the All-District pick came up with 84 tackles and a

On offense, sophomores Taggert Reynold and Aiden Donelan will look to fill the two vacant spots on the line while Charlie Farhat and Owen Prokosch aim to solidify the team’s four-man front on defense. “Our youth will be on the offensive and defensive lines.
We have guys who have played there, but we also have new faces there,” Konold said. “They’ve worked really hard

BUFFALO LAKE-HECTOR-STEWART
Mustangs look to light up scoreboard By Joe Brown jbrown@wctrib.com Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart took a lot of steps in the right direction in 2017, often quickly down the sidelines for a touchdown, and the Mustangs are looking to light up the scoreboard yet again in 2018. The team’s fate, however, may lie in the defense. The Mustangs averaged 30.8 points per game, the third-highest mark in District 9 South (Central) but ran into trouble preventing other teams from entering the endzone during highscoring conference play. BLHS allowed 31.4 points per game and gave up 36 points or more in all four of the team’s losses. In order to improve on last year’s record, the Mustangs will need to improve on that defense and they’ll look to four juniors who hope to complement
their offensive prowess with defensive ability. Zachary Reuber (Jr., RB/S) ran for 1,079 yards on 189 attempts with 13 touchdowns last season and he’ll shoulder even more of the load after the graduation of quarterback Brock Luthens. Luthens ran for 824 yards and 12 touchdowns. August Bergstrom (Jr., WR/RB/CB) missed time last season with an injury but he could be a valuable playmaker looking to replace some of Luthens’ production. Mitchell Krumrey (Jr., FB/OL/DL) and Dylan Maiers (Jr., TE/WR/LB) round out the returning starters and their development could spell big things for this Mustangs team. BLHS won’t have an easy schedule, though. Due to the unification of previously scheduled opponents, the Mustangs will have to play Cleveland, the reigning district champions and perennial power, twice this season.

Falcons building on top returning talent By Tom Larson tlarson@wctrib.com CGC will have several holes to fill in 2018 after the graduations of talented 2017 seniors such as Jeremy Nelson (865 rushing yards, 10 touchdowns), Jaren Kaddatz (23 receptions, 478 yards and four touchdowns), Cullen Lewis (52.5 total tackles) and Elliot Gratz (53 assisted tackles). But the Falcons are optimistic about their chances this fall with two of their district’s top offensive talents back at key positions. While Nelson led the district in rushing attempts, junior Josh Kinzler (6-1, 170) employed his multiple talents to earn all-district honors last fall. Kinzler was eighth among district runners with 561 yards and three TDs on 89 carries. He also tied for second in the district with 22 receptions for 478 yards and four scores. Kinzler also Curt Hogg / Tribune intercepted three passes, which tied him for third in the district. ACGC returns with two top offensive talents for the 2018 season.

The Falcons can expect big things from senior all-district quarterback and safety Michael Trebil (5-10, 175). Last year, Trebil was third in the district hitting 54 of 100 passes for 859 yards and seven touchdowns. He led a Falcons offense that ranked third in the district averaging 22.8 points per game. ACGC has all-district junior lineman Tanner Berguis (6-0, 230) and junior two-way lineman Ethan Melberg (6-0, 220) back to anchor both sides of the ball. In addition to Kinzler, Trebil will have senior starters Chase Litzau (5-11, 160) and Skye Powers (5-10, 150) back at wide receiver. The Falcons will also be looking for contributions from senior Nate Essendrup (160 pounds, WR/DB), juniors Cael Blom (5-10, 160, RB/ LB), Dawson Miller (6-3, 185, WR/ LB), Steven Lawver (6-2, 175, WR/DE) and Zach Hunther (175, OL/DE), and sophomores Noah Renne (180, RB/LB and Malcolm Ludwig (180, RB/LB).

BELGRADE-BROOTEN-ELROSA
By Tom Larson tlarson@wctrib.com Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa will focus intensely on the opening weeks of the 2018 season to evaluate replacements for 13 seniors who played major roles in the Jaguars’ 8-2 season in 2017. While BBE has just four starters back, they are about as good a group of returnees as the Jags could want. Senior Thaniel Cebulla (6-2, 205 pounds) is a versatile talent, evident in his role as an offensive lineman and a free safety on defense. He was an all-district honorable mention and also was named the district’s Defensive Back of the Year. “He was a nose for the ball,” said BBE head coach Chris Moscho. Senior offensive lineman and defensive end Jared Weller (6-3, 180) joined Cebulla as a team offensive MVP, and that pair will anchor the Jaguars up front. Senior running backs Tyler Bents (5-10, 165) and Ben Boie (6-0, 160) were both all-district honorable mention selections last year. They also will team up at linebacker. Jackson Peter will rely on those seniors as he moves into the starting quarterback spot. “We will be a different-looking team this year as we graduated 13 seniors from last season who all contributed significantly to this team,” Moscho said. “The first couple of weeks of football will be crucial for us as we are still trying to figure stuff out with all the new spots open and the new kids out for football.”

DAWSON-BOYD
Skill players could keep Blackjacks in hunt By Joe Brown jbrown@wctrib.com Looking to get back atop the Southwest-West district and Section 5A, Dawson-Boyd will lean on its core of returning skill players to stay in the section title hunt. “We have the capability of becoming a very competitive team,” said Blackjacks head coach Cory Larson. “But you always need to stay healthy and focused on improving each day.” Few teams in west central Minnesota — let alone Class A — will field a running back tandem like the Blackjacks have in seniors Bentley Boike and Colton Husby. Boike, at 6-foot-3 and 218 pounds, was the area’s top rusher a year ago with 1,789 yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground, including three games with over 200 rushing yards. Not to be outdone, Husby, at 6-foot and 210, finished 2017 with 979 yards and 16 touchdowns. Husby was also the team’s top force on defense as the linebacker had a team-high 76 tackles. The backfield duo will be leaned on this year with the graduation of quarterback Alex Swenson and a young offensive line. Senior Quintin Lehmann (6-foot, 225 pounds) will be one of the leaders in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
“We definitely lack experience and depth up front,” Larson said. “We will have a mix of yough along with a couple of seniors with experience vying to round out the offensive line. Our level of competitiveness may depend on how quickly we come together up front.” On defense, youth will prevail as Dawson-Boyd brings back just four starters. Along with Boike and Husby, two stallwards of the defense return in sack leader Kolten Lindblad (43 tackles, four sacks, two fumble recoveries) and defensive back Keaton Schuelke (32 tackles, two interceptions). Schuelke was also the team’s leading receiver with 338 yards and five touchdowns on 24 catches. A pair of juniors — linebacker Josh Anyasike (51 tackles) and defensive back Romell Horton — also return on defense for the Blackjacks, who open the 2018 campaign on Aug. 30 at R.B. Hancock needs to identify new offensive talent By Tom Larson tlarson@wctrib.com Hancock fired up a super-charged offense last season: The Owls averaged 430 total yards per game — 228 through the air, 202 on the ground — and they averaged 35.4 points per game. What may vex the Owls this year is replacing the two main cylinders in that machine. Kaleb Koehl threw for 1,660 yards and 19 touchdowns last year and he ran for 1,194 yards and 11 scores. Top wide receiver Noah Kannegiesser caught 48 of Koehl’s throws for 926 yards and 12 TDs. Both graduated, leaving the Owls seeking new blood and that will need to bubble to the surface in short order. Bennett Nienhaus is the top returning
passer, having appeared in six games last year and hitting 10 of 18 passes for 87 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Timmerman is the Owls’ top returning runner. In eight games, Timmerman picked up 125 yards on 23 carries. Outscoring opponents worked for the Owls last season, but with untested offensive talent needing time to develop they will require marked improvement on the defensive side of the ball. Last season, the Owls posted a 6-4 overall mark and were 5-3 in district games. But when the track meet formula failed, it did so spectacularly. Hancock allowed 28.3 points per game last year, and in their four losses the Owls surrendered 52, 61, 50 and 61 points.

Having Rudningen in the backfield will be vital for the Fighting Saints with the loss of three-year starting quarterback Caleb Collins. Junior Austin Deike is slated to take over at quarterback and will have wideouts like senior Weston Gjerde and sophomore Isaac Call to stretch the defense with. The two will try to match the output of outgoing receiver Brandon Rasmusson, who had 300 receiving yards and a touchdown. He was also the team’s defensive MVP with 90 tackles and an interception. While Josh Peterson, last year’s top lineman for KMS graduated, four of the team’s starting linemen — Caleb Heidelberger, Regan Carlson, Chris Moist and Christian Diederich — are back in the trenches. With the players returning, the Fighting Saints will hope to duplicate its success in tight games after going

By Joe Brown jbrown@wctrib.com The last two seasons have been a tick upwards for Kerkhoven-MurdockSunburg. After going 1-8 in 2015, the Fighting Saints have put together two consecutive 5-5 season and a spot in the Section 4A tournament semifinals after sixth-seeded KMS upset thirdseeded Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity in the opening round. Now, the Fighting Saints’ goal is to take another step forward and get over the .500 mark and try to go even further in the section tournament. “We have been 5-5 the last couple years and we have our running backs back with most of our line,” said KMS head coach Eric Kauffmann, who is entering his sixth year with the team. “(We) hope to build on the last couple years’ success.” That returning back is last year’s team offensive MVP in 5-foot-8, 180pound senior Dylan Rudningen. He led the team with 1,002 rushing yards and

BOLD
Warriors have what it takes to break through By Tom Larson tlarson@wctrib.com BOLD last earned a spot in the state tournament in 2015 when it lost a heart-breaking double overtime game to Holdingford in the championship game. That experienced steeled the Warriors for the next three seasons, in which they compiled a 27-6 record but lost three-straight section finals. This year, BOLD has the tools to end that tough stretch. The Warriors return with seven seasoned returning starters and three junior starters are back after being major contributors the last two seasons. The Warriors have four backs — junior Gavin Vosika (774 yards, 16 touchdowns), junior Blake Plass (479, 4 TDs), senior Hayden Tersteeg (304, 2 TDs) and junior Jordan Sagedahl (204, 5 TDs) — who combined to score 27 touchdowns.) Sagedahl had a superb year passing,
hitting 89 of 140 throws (64 percent) for 1,816 yards and 30 touchdowns. He has hit two top targets back, as well. Senior Luke Ryan caught 34 passes for 758 yards and 13 TDs last season, and Gavin Vosika made 35 receptions for 742 yards and 11 scores. The Warriors’ line returns with two years experience on both sides of the ball, led by seniors Riley Weis at guard and defensive tackle, Jake Evenson at tackle spots, Cade Moorse at center and linebacker. Seniors Trey Mertens (TE/LB), Kyle Kostoryhz (G/DT) and Parker Hurning (G/DT) will be ready to help their skill players and put the clamps on opposing ones. “The offseason workouts and weight room have improved and the players have a chip on their shoulders, which is a good sign of maturity with something to prove,” said BOLD offensive coordinator Daren Sagedahl.

NEW LONDON-SPICER
Wildcats ready to unleash offensive firepower By Tom Larson tlarson@wctrib.com ew London-Spicer has never had a problem developing offensive talent and this year will be no different. “We will be tough to stop offensively,” said head coach Dan Essler. “We have very good speed and a lot of excellent athletes to spread the ball around to to keep teams off guard.” The show begins upfront, with AllSection 6AAA senior center Patrick Schimerowski back, along with senior
N
tackles Brandyn Harlow and Aaron Renner. Junior guard Cade Wosmek, a 6-3, 265 pounds, is expected to leave a mark, and senior starting tight end Evan Dietz also is back. Senior Brandon Adelman was last season’s district Most Valuable Quarterback after hitting 105 of 202 passes for 1,664 yards and 21 touchdowns. Senior all-district tailback Sam Stageberg had 1,001 yards and 12 scores on 180 carries, and senior Kelly Bennetts was the district’s Most
Valuable Wide Receiver last year after catching 49 passes for 835 yards and 10 TDs. Senior newcomer Payton Madison could be a major weapon. A 6-4, 235pound fullback and strong safety, he sat out last year due to transfer rules. But Essler said Madison is the team’s strongest and fastest player. On the defensive side of the ball, the Wildcats have seven starters back and will trot out all-district and all-section players at six positions. Madison and Bennetts will likely
man the safety spots, and senior Nick Perkins will join Stageberg on the corners. Harlow was all-district at defensive end, and Schimerowski and senior Nathan Ogdahl both were all-section at the defensive tackles spots. Senior linebacker Gideon Mische was an alldistrict honorable mention in 2017. “We have a great deal of experience on both sides of the ball,” Essler said. “This is a very talented senior group of players.”

LAC QUI PARLE VALLEY
Winning record Eagles’ goal for 2018 By Joe Brown jbrown@wctrib.com ac qui Parle Valley has made it a habit in the last half-decade to hover around the .500 mark. In 2017, the Eagles went 4-4 in the regular season, followed by a 1-1 showing in the Section 5A playoffs. Now in 2018, the hope for the Eagles is to sport a winning record for the first time since 2010. “We lost a lot of production and leadership to graduation,” said second-year head coach Tony Smith. “But I think this group is up to the task of replacing both. The goal is to build on last season’s 5-5 record.” LQPV’s signal-caller will return as Wyatt Halvorson (5-foot-11, 185 pounds) is slated to lead the offense. Behind him in the backfield will be running back/defensive back Jacob Ransom (6-0, 170) and junior running back/defensive back Layton Wittnebel (5-10, 160), both of whom will look to get a bigger workload following the graduation of Peyton Mortenson (1,225
L
rushing yards, 14 touchdowns, three kick return touchdowns). “Wyatt is in his second year of playing QB. He’s a strong kid with a good arm,” Smith said. “Jacob should get more touches. We will look to get him the ball in different ways. Layton played well in a reserve role last year. He’s ready to step into a full-time position. Defensively, he has a nose for the ball.” Senior Caden Bjornjeld will present a big target for Halvorson at 6-2 while 5-9 Mason Clark will also fight for catches out wide. “Mason has good hands and is very competitive when the ball is in the air,” Smith said. “Caden runs routes very well and has very good hands.” Linebacker/offensive lineman Dain Haas (6-0, 190) also provides some versatility for the Eagles, Smith said. LQPV will have a tough road test against Wabasso on Aug. 31 before hosting consecutive home games against Lakeview and New Ulm Cathedral.
We lost a lot of production and leadership to graduation. But I think this group is up to the task of replacing both. The goal is to build on last season’s 5-5 record.

Another 2017 injury casualty, senior Brandt Pedersen (6-3, 205) is back at split end and safety after playing just five games last year. In four games at receiver, Pedersen made nine catches for 148 yards and three touchdowns. On defense, he averaged 10 tackles per game and intercepted two passes. Junior linebacker and running back Patrick Benson (5-10, 180) made 35 tackles in seven games as a sophomore. Seniors Alex Gruenke (6-0, 155) and Jake Schneider (6-3, 160) are back as receiving corps starters. The Dragons now need to ID a quarterback who can find them. Re-incorporating all the offensive players who missed time with injuries will be critical for Litchfield this fall, but it may not matter if the Dragons can’t shore up the other side of the ball. Litchfield averaged 278 total yards last year but surrendered 330 yards per game.

MINNEWASKA
By Tom Larson tlarson@wctrib.com Minnewaska lost 14 seniors from a strong 7-3 team but the Lakers still have be considered one of the area’s top teams entering 2018 based on the talent they return. Senior lineman John Helander (6-1, 215 pounds) was all-district last year and senior running back and linebacker Jack Blevins (6-2, 190) was an all-district honorable mention selection. Senior Ryan Amundson (5-10, 165) is a strong athlete but will be asked to handle the tough task of stepping in for departed quarterback Matt Gruber. Junior Tyler VanLuik (5-10, 205) will join Helander upfront on the offensive and defensive lines. Junior lineman Dylan Jergenson (6-1, 200) is back after missing all but one week in 2017 due to a hunting accident, and sophomore Jakob Swalla (5-11,
235) has the potential to step into the lineup and leaving his mark. Amundson will have some weapons in Blevins and juniors Grant Jensen (6-0, 170 RB/DB) and Luke Barkeim (6-2, 175 RB/WR/LB). Head coach Jeremy Christensen is also expecting junior running back and linebacker Christian Bartz (5-10, 180) and sophomore running back and linebacker Tyson Meyer (6-0, 185) to compete for playing time on both sides of the ball. “Our kids have worked hard this offseason to ready themselves for larger roles and I think we have some very nice pieces to work with,” Christensen said. “Our challenge as a staff will be to put all the puzzle pieces together correctly. If we can stay healthy and continue to grow as the season goes on, I think we’ll be tough to beat in the postseason.”

T-Hawks need younger players to step up By Tom Larson tlarson@wctrib.com ontevideo’s 10 returning starters are split evenly between seniors and juniors, but the Thunder Hawks need younger players to fill key roles opened by graduation. Junior Tyler Blue (6-1, 200 pounds) steps into the quarterback spot left by the departed Isaac Hoogeveen, and he will have some solid players upfront to help with the transition. Juniors Junior Salazar (5-11, 225), Jackson Enevoldsen (6-0, 265) and Ross Kwiliniski (6-2, 260) bring size to the offensive line, and Kwiliniski, senior Isaac Esparza (6-0, 220) and junior Logan Abrahamson (6-2, 295) give the T-Hawks a bulky front on defense, as well. Seniors Trent Dreyer (6-0, 185) and Chase Korte (6-0, 190) will line up in the backfield, and Seth Kuno (5-10, 160) and Jackson Snell (6-3, 190) will be his primary targets. In district games, Snell caught 13 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns at tight end in 2017. Overall, the goal will be improved on a 16-points-per-game average in 2017 That foursome also will be the backbone of the defense at linebacker and defensive back. Korte ranked fourth in the district last year with 29 solo tackles. Esparza tied for third in the district last season with 3.5 sacks. The T-Hawks will need to shore up their defense to compete this season. They allowed 31.5 points per game last season, ranking seventh in the eightteam district.

PAYNESVILLE
Bulldogs to face tough tests in 2018 By Tom Larson tlarson@wctrib.com aynesville was 9-3 and advanced to the Class AA state semifinals last year, and the Bulldogs have seven starters back from that team. But, as usual, the Bulldogs will have one of the area’s toughest schedules to contend with. Paynesville opens with BOLD, a 10-1 team last year, and they close their home schedule against Class AAA state champion Pierz, 13-0 a year ago. In between, their district foes Eden Valley-Watkins, Melrose and Holdingford all had winning records last season. “2018 will be a great test for our
P
football team,” said head coach Max Meagher. Paynesville should be right in the mix, however, with talent spread across both sides of the ball. Senior quarterback and linebacker Max Weidner (5-11, 175 pounds) was a district Quarterback of the Year, and senior back, wide receiver and safety Zach Schroeder (5-11, 180) was a district Wide Receiver of the Year. Senior linemen Trevor Hemmesch (6-1, 265 and all-district) and Jadon Holzer (6-2, 285) provide continuity upfront. Weidner will have some explosive weapons at his disposal in all-section wide receivers and defensive backs
Levi Bast (a 6-0, 165 junior) and Sam Oehrlein (a 5-10 junior). Senior cornerback Luke Johnson (5-11) was all-district second team last fall, and Meagher is impressed with the potential of junior backs and linebackers Daltin Christinsen (5-11, 175) and Grady Fuchs (6-0, 175). On the lines, the Bulldogs have junior tight end and defensive end Mitchel Schlangen (6-2, 230), junior two-way tackle Spence Evans (6-3, 275), junior
tackle and defensive end Dylan Messick (6-2, 235) and Josh Tupy (6-0, 185) at guard and defensive end. Paynesville’s depth also will be fortified by the return of senior guard and linebacker Josiah Walz (5-10, 200), a two-way starter who missed last season with an injury. “Our senior and junior classes both provide a mix of big, athletic linemen and athletic skill position players,” Meagher said. 001762258r1

RENVILLE COUNTY WEST
By Joe Brown jbrown@wctrib.com year after going 5-5, an experienced Renville County West squad — with nine seniors and five juniors — hopes to make a jump in both the district standings and the Section 2 9-Man playoffs. The recipe for the Jaguars’ success last year seemed to be a race to 34. In its five wins, RCW averaged 34.2 points. And in five losses, the Jaguars allowed 34.4 points. With several key skill players back in the huddle, RCW should have an easier time reaching that magic number, with Jaime Castillo and Jaden Kolker leading the way. In 2017, Castillo, a 5-foot-8, 160pound wide receiver/defensive back had 548 receiving yards and 329 rushing yards with 14 total touchdowns (six receiving, seven rushing, one kick return). He also finished with 83 tackles on defense. As a freshman last year, Kolker (5-9, 185) was a force at linebacker with 144 tackles and three sacks while
A
also coming up with 349 receiving yards at tight end. “(Castillo) has good speed, great hands (and) elusive,” said RCW head coach Ryan Hebrink, who is entering his ninth season. “(Jaden) had an incredible year last year as a freshman. Great mind for the game. (He’s) able to play running back or tight end very well. (He’s) expected to be one of our top tacklers.” Junior Jack Howard, who Hebrink said has a great arm with a combination of strength and accuracy, will look to be a dual threat at quarterback. Axel Zaragoza will look to shoulder some of the load at tailback and Tino Salinas will contribute at either tight end or fullback while also serving as a middle linebacker on defense. Junior Connor Aalderks, the fastest player on the team according to Hebrink, will contribute out wide on offense, in the backfield on defense and as the team’s kick returner. RCW begins the 2018 season on Aug. 31 in Danube against last year’s Section 2 9-Man champion, RussellTyler-Ruthton.

MORRIS/CHOKIO-ALBERTA
Tigers need ground game to carry day By Tom Larson tlarson@wctrib.com orris/Chokio-Alberta will need to identify prospects on both sides of the ball to replace the likes of departed graduates Connor Koebernick, Gage Wevley, Dylan Gillespie and Bain Laine. But senior running back Camden Arndt and four returning starters upfront should help the Tigers remain competitive until the newcomers come
M
around. Arndt (6-3, 185 pounds) was a district Offensive Back of the Year after running for 1,438 yards and 13 touchdowns on 196 carries last year. He also caught seven passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns, and accounted for almost 400 kick return yards. From his linebacker spot, Arndt was in on 45 total tackles, had three sacks, broke up three passes and had an interception. Morris/CA returns with seniors
Kevin Asfeld (6-0, 200), Brady Cardwell (6-0, 180) and all-section lineman Joseph Kleinwolterink (5-11, 200) on both sides of the line, and senior all-section tight end and linebacker Jaret Johnson (6-4, 200) is an imposing presence on offense and defense. Arndt will obviously be the team’s go-to skill position player but senior fullback and linebacker Matt McNeill (6-0, 200) ran for 95 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries in limited
duty last year. Senior Mace Yellow (5-11, 160) will line up at wide receiver and at cornerback. Last season, he was in on 36 total tackles, forced and recovered two fumbles, had two pass breakups and intercepted a pass. But as Arndt goes, so do the Tigers. “Camden can impact the game in a lot of ways,” said head coach Kevin Pope. “He was a playmaker on the defensive side of the ball, as well.” 001620805r1

YELLOW MEDICINE EAST
New-look Sting hope to reverse fortunes By Joe Brown jbrown@wctrib.com ith the retirement of long-time head coach Mike Gaffaney, Yellow Medicine East alum Dave Schueler will try to reverse the Sting’s fortunes after going 1-8 in 2017. Schueler, a 2004 graduate, is hoping to turn things around at YME with an experienced lineup that can hopefully emulate the 2016 season, which saw the Sting finish 6-4. “The returning starters are bringing a wealth of experience to this season, having played in a lot of close games last season,” Schueler said. Three of YME’s losses in 2017 were single-digit deficits. Schueler continued, “They are hungry to get back on the winning side of things and are going to put in the work to get it done. They have a competitive spirit inside of them that wants to win and are gritty
W
competitors.” The team will be without two of its top defensive players from a year ago in linebacker Bryce Schmidt (94 tackles, four sacks, team MVP) and defensive lineman Kole Johnson (101 tackles, six sacks). Also missing from last year’s roster are Nicky Lindstrom, Cole Richter, Tyson Knollenberg and Trent Skjefte. But the Sting will have experience with its returning starters: QB/LB Angel Jimenez, RB/LB Ayden Friese, RB/DB David Hidalgo, RB/LB Ethan Peterson, WR/DB Carter Sneller, OT/ DE Dalton Anderson and OG/DL Loren Labatt. “They have all been working hard this off-season to prepare for this upcoming year and have shown us that they have the ability to do a great job at their positions,” Schueler said. “They are all hungry to win.” The Sting open the season on the road against Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Aug. 30.

MACCRAY
Young Wolverines rounding into form By Joe Brown jbrown@wctrib.com ACCRAY had an uphill climb last fall. After going 6-5 in 2016, the 2017 season started with an 0-5 start en route to a tough 2-7 showing. But this fall, the Wolverines return two 100-tackle defenders. Along with a year of maturity from quarterback Thomas Kirking, MACCRAY is hoping this year’s climb is nowhere as steep. The top returning standouts are senior linebackers Kelby Jaenisch and Jakob Zuidema. Jaenisch led all of Minnesota in 2017 with 163 total
M
tackles (103 solo) along with a sack and a fumble recovery. Zuidema wasn’t too far behind with 101 tackles (74 solo) and a sack. “These guys are our leaders and core on defense along with both starting at RB, too,” said second-year head coach Rick Meyer. “As coaches, we could not ask for better guys to build a team around. They show up every day to work and our younger guys are doing a great job of following their lead.” Rhys Schwitters, considered an allaround weapon by the coaches, returns to the defensive huddle after being one of the team’s most productive

defenders with 55 tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery last year. On the offensive end, MACCRAY will lean on its second-year starter behind center in Kirking. As a junior, Kirking was 75 of 182 for 1,200 yards, 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He was also the team’s leading rusher with 333 yards and a touchdown on 109 carries. “(He) will be a threat for our offense,” Meyer said of Kirking. Kirking will have to find a new target in the passing game with the graduation
of Braden Hoekstra, who accounted for 915 total yards (601 receiving, 314 rushing) and 17 total touchdowns (eight receiving, six rushing, two kick returns, one interception). A pair of offensive linemen — Carter Sabe and Jager Benson — are back to help push the Wolverines’ offense forward while Will Asche will contribute again as a tight end/ receiver and cornerback. MACCRAY, which went 2-2 in road games during the regular season last fall, opens 2018 at Mountain Lake Area on Aug. 31.
