The Kandiyohi County Relay for Life is July 20

The American Cancer Society

Welcomes You

The Relay For Life started in Tacoma, Wash., in 1985, when Dr. Gordon Klatt ran and walked solo around the track at the University of Puget Sound, raising $27,000 for the fight against cancer. The next year 19 teams joined him on the track — relay style — and the Relay For Life was born. Communities all across the world now participate in Relay For Life events. They have chosen to take up the fight and make a difference in the lives of those touched by cancer. Kandiyohi County will hold its 25th annual Relay For Life July 20 at the Willmar Middle School track. The Relay For Life is a family-friendly event with activities, food and entertainment.

We invite you to join us for a night dedicated to: n CELEBRATE the lives of those who have battled cancer, n REMEMBER the loved ones lost to the disease, and n FIGHT BACK against a disease that takes too much. Funds raised from this event go toward supporting the efforts of the American Cancer Society through research, education, advocacy and patient services. We are dedicated to creating a world with more birthdays and less cancer. This event is made possible by the work of many volunteers and generous donors. Thank you to all the Relay For Life teams, volunteers, our corporate sponsors and all our supporters who donated goods and services. We could not do this without you. “Twelve hours. It can stretch out forever when you’re waiting to hear the report on a biopsy. It can literally evaporate when it’s the last hours spent with a dying loved one, or it can bring hundreds of people together in the fight against cancer through Relay For Life.” Be a part of a world with more birthdays. Support Relay For Life! See you there!

CELEBRATE The Survivors Lap

Relay starts with a Survivors Lap – an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer. The Survivors Lap is an emotional example of how Relay participants are ensuring that more lives are saved each year – like those of each individual on the track. We also recognize and celebrate caregivers at Relay For Life. These individuals give their time, love, and support to friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who face cancer. At Relay, people understand the frustrations and joys of being a caregiver, since the effects of cancer reach far beyond just the person diagnosed.

REMEMBER The Luminaria Ceremony

After dark, we honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence. As people take time to remember, those who have walked alongside others battling cancer can grieve and find healing. This is a time that truly highlights the importance of defeating this disease.

FIGHT BACK

The Fight Back Ceremony

Last, there is a Fight Back Ceremony, where we make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer. That personal commitment may be to do something as simple as getting a screening test, quitting smoking, or talking to elected officials about cancer. By taking action, people are personally taking steps to save lives and fight back against a disease that takes too much.

Let us join together and take up the fight against cancer.
