In real estate, the old adage goes “location, location, location.” The same could be said when seeking a venue for a wedding ceremony, reception or dance. And as couples continue to pursue alternative locales to a traditional wedding scene, some niché businesses — like wineries — are seeing an increased demand for services. A number of wineries have cropped up in recent years in the rolling hills and bluffs of some of the Minnesota’s most picturesque landscapes, and there are more than 30 statewide, according to an online guide. Among them are Glacial Ridge Winery and Hinterland Vineyards, both located in west central Minnesota. Here’s a look at what these two wineries offer couples on their big day. Hinterland Vineyards “It’s just an ambient scene,” Aftan Koenen says of the winery she owns and operates with her husband, Aric. Nestled amid farm acreage and groves a jaunt north of Clara City, Hinterland Vineyards looks to provide a slice of Napa Valley to wedding-goers. The vineyard’s food menu, catering options and indoor eating area that can seat 60 guests attracted a number of parties in 2015 for bridal and groom suppers. But with its outdoor patio and tent space, a growing roster of wines and a 10acre vineyard, the Koenens are aiming for 2016 to be the year Hinterland expands as a go-to regional venue for weddings. “It’s just a great place,” she said. “We’re right here in farm country, but once you step into the vineyard, you’d think you were in wine country.” The winery is located at 3060 120th Ave S.E. in Clara City, one mile north of Minnesota Highway 23. Hours of operation are 5:30-9 p.m. Fridays and 1-9 p.m. Saturdays from September through May, and 5:30-10 p.m. Fridays and 1-10 p.m. Saturdays from June through August. For more information, visit www.hinterlandvineyards.com, email hinterlandvineyards@gmail.com or call 320-847-3060.

Glacial Ridge Winery Located on 17.5 rolling acres shadowed by woodlands just north of Spicer, Glacial Ridge is owned by Ron and Kimberly Wothe and imparts the ambiance and earthen attributes couples seek in an outdoor wedding experience, Ron says. The winery played host to more than a dozen weddings last year between May and October. Central to the locus is a 5.5-acre orchard that provides a vivid canvas as a backdrop for couples to exchange their nuptials. Tent rental is also available for a ceremony or reception. However, those with larger guest groups can rent an adjacent pole barn. Open and airy, the barn features exposed beams and a tin frame in line with the winery’s rustic setting. Parties can also tour the winery, where the Wothes handcraft nearly two-dozen varieties of wine, all of which can be catered for receptions. Drinks menus are padded with beer, pop and water. The Wothes also provide the wait staff and servers for receptions. “For anyone seeking that grand outdoor experience, our venue is a special place,” Ron said. The winery is located at 15455 Old Mill Road, four miles north of Spicer.

Red, White, or Rosé?
Hair
A quick how-to Sparkling wine is a wedding fixture, but consider serving one red and one white still wine if the bash includes dinner. Wedding planners advocate serving equal amounts of red and white wine — if only so you don’t disappoint half the crowd. For those who want to pour just one wine with the meal, there is a compromise: dry rosé, a wine refreshing and also substantial enough to drink with sturdy foods. Source: epicurious.com
Schedule a haircut with a professional stylist roughly a week before the wedding to get your hair shaped and trimmed. Although trendy hairstyles may show off creativity, keep in mind that photos last forever, and it’s often better to stick with a classic cut. Resist the urge to wash your hair every day before the wedding. Allow some natural oils to build up and make your hair shine in a healthy way.
Groom’s cakes make comeback
METRO CREATIVES PHOTOS
Groomed
Guests and well-wishers expect to see at least one cake at wedding receptions. But wedding guests should not be surprised if they attend a wedding and notice two cakes sharing the spotlight on the dessert table. Groom’s cakes have existed for generations but have fallen out of favor in many parts of North America since the 1970s. Now groom’s cakes are experiencing a resurgence in popularity. A groom’s cake traditionally represents something masculine, providing a contrast to the oft-feminine features, such as floral bouquets and frilly gowns, that dominate many weddings. Groom’s cake are often chocoalte and reflect a particular hobby or interest of the groom’s. — Metro Creatives
Hey, guys ... look your best on the big day Weddings are a chance for couples tying the knot to be the center of attention. All eyes will be glued to the bride and groom on this special day, which makes it even more important for couples to look their collective best. Brides might garner most of the attention on a couple’s wedding day, but dashing grooms also will get their share of attention. As a result, grooms must be just as diligent as their blushing brides with regard to grooming and appearance on their wedding days. To look picture-perfect, grooms may want to include these grooming tips in their wedding day preparation.
Shaving
Shaving is another thing grooms must consider. If you have a beard, make sure it is clean, combed and trimmed. Men who shave the day of their weddings may find their skin is sensitive and irritated, which can lead to redness.

Unless your facial hair grows especially fast, shave the evening before. This is a good time to splurge on a professional shave with a straight razor at a barber shop. A hot shave from a professional will produce a close shave with the least amount of irritation when done correctly.
Luckily there are no established rules when it comes to wedding day nail polish. Colors can range from neutrals and traditional shades to shades that are brighter and more exotic. See if one of these suggestions fits your style. Nude colors
Hands
Grooms also may want to book a manicure. Keep in mind that salons will do men’s nonpolish manicures and pedicures, and they can be well worth the investment. Photos of entwined hands or close-ups of the ring exchange will have guests zeroing
in on your fingers. Have hands look their best with clean, shaped fingernails and trimmed cuticles. Skin
Get plenty of sleep the night prior to the wedding. Being well rested will help reduce puffy eyes, dark circles and sallow skin. It will also put you in a more positive mood, which can help you enjoy the day even more. The day of the wedding, shower using water and a mild soap. Avoid
any skin irritation by patting your face and body dry, rather than rubbing it with the towel. Moisturize your skin to avoid dry patches. Stores sell many moisturizers geared toward men’s needs, often in unscented or more masculine fragrances. Reducing shine is key for wedding day photos. Rely on face and hair products that will not add unnecessary sheen to your skin or hair to avoid making you look greasy. Matte hair waxes and sprays will tame tresses. Also, ask your fiance a to pick you up a package of blotting tissues if you are prone to oily skin. These absorbent, typically rice-paper sheets will remove oil from your face and keep sheen to a minimum. Smile
Make sure your teeth have been thoroughly brushed and that you have used a minty mouthwash so you’re primed for that first kiss. Many grooms also opt for whitening treatments prior to the wedding so they have a dazzling smile. On their wedding days, grooms will likely be photographed more than any other time in their lives.

How to achieve a perfect tone for your nails Certainly a bride’s gown receives its fair share of attention on her wedding day, especially in those first moments when she proceeds down the aisle to her soon-to-be spouse. But another part of the bride’s ensemble will be scrutinized ... her hands. Wedding guests will be anxious to see the wedding ring, and photographs of the couple holding hands typically are included in the wedding album. A bride’s hands need to look as polished as the rest of her wedding day ensemble.
Brides may want to downplay their nails and not let them detract from their rings or gowns. Using nude colors will help achieve this. Nudes can include blush pink, offwhite and beige-toned nail polish alone or in combination, such as with a French manicure. Some brides choose to go with clear polish and let their natural nails shine through. Bold and beautiful
Brides who really want to make a statement can select a bold color for their nail polish. Coral and deep pinks can be a stark contrast against a white gown and add a bit of drama to a bride’s look. Brides also may want to coordinate their
nail colors to the theme of the wedding. A blue or teal shade for an ocean-side wedding or a lavender shade for a spring wedding can look beautiful. Nail art
Polish can be enhanced further with nail appliques or painted-on designs. It’s common for nail art to only appear on one nail of each hand, and it’s usually reserved for the ring finger. As people admire the wedding ring, they also can grab a peek at some fun and flirty nail art. Glitter
For a bit more pizzazz, brides can have their nails done with a nude or clear color enhanced with glitter. The glitter will add a bit of sparkle that can complement the shine of wedding rings and any embellishments on gowns or veils. An alternative is to have tiny faux gems imbedded into the polish near the base of the nail where it meets the cuticle.

tips for toasting the happy couple
Keep it brief While there might be many things you want to say, try to express yourself concisely.
Avoid being too formal Even the most formal wedding can benefit from a toast that veers more toward the spontaneous. Practice, practice, practice Practice your speech ahead of time so you are not reading from cards or notepads during the toast. Stay appropriate Humor adds a lot to wedding toasts, but make sure to clean up any humorous anecdotes. Share well wishes Give your best wishes to the bride and groom before raising your glass, and inviting others to do the same. This is the last step. — Metro Creatives

Weddings are all about the brides, or so it would seem. While all eyes are on the bride, the groom sometimes goes unnoticed. One person who shouldn’t fail to notice the groomsmen is the groom himself. Groomsmen can and often do have significant responsibilites. A good groom should recognize the efforts of his groomsmen and give gifts as an aknowledegment of their efforts.
Following are some gift ideas:
❍ See that all attendants have been fitted and wedding attire has been ordered
❍ Purchase gifts for groomsmen and ushers ❍ Purchase wedding gifts for fiancé, if gifts are being exchanged
❍ Pick up wedding rings and make sure they fit ❍ Take care of business and legal affairs (add fiancé’s
name to insurance policies and medical plans, make a will, add her name to a joint checking account, or joint charge cards
Men tend to focus on the celebratory aspects of the day. Grooms can give a personalized gift as a means of commemorating the day.
These days, weekend getaways are a common theme to many bachelor parties. Consider gifts that evoke memories of that special weekend where you were the guest of honor.
❍ Together with fiancé, gather necessasry documents and get your marriage license
❍ Arrange wedding day transportation ❍ Reconfirm accommodations for out-of-town guests ❍ If moving, give change of address card to post ❍
office; arrange to have utilities and phone service turned on in new home Have your hair cut
For grooms whose wedding will be an elegant affair, celebrate that elegance by giving each of your groomsmen and engraved pocket watch.

hen planning their weddings, couples may find themselves becoming experts on subjects they previously never gave much thought. Thanks to the cost of weddings, today’s couples must make each decision carefully, and that may result in hours of research and discussion. One of the big decisions couples must make when planning their weddings concerns their floral arrangements. The right floral arrangements won’t break the bank but will add substantial aesthetic appeal to ceremonies and receptions. It can be difficult for couples to achieve that balance of cost and look on their own, so the following are a few helpful hints:

nerves to work with someone they trust in such situations. Florists with significant wedding experience will no doubt make a host of recommendations based on couples’ budgets and preferences, so couples might be more inclined to listen to that advice if they are working with someone they trust. Ask relatives, friends or coworkers if they can recommend any florists whose wedding work they are familiar with. m Choose in-season or native flowers. Couples working with tight budgets may want to choose in-season flowers or those native to the area where they will be tying the knot. In-season and native flowers won’t need to be ordered or shipped in from afar, which can be costly. In-season and native flowers tend to be more abundant as well, and the greater their availability the less couples are likely to pay for them. m Repurpose floral arrangements. Another way to save on floral arrangements is to repurpose flowers
m Go big. Some flowers simply bloom larger than others, and choosing such flowers may help you save money since you won’t need to buy as many flowers as you would if you were to go with smaller blooms. Once you find a florist to work with, discuss your options with regard to doing more with less. Many florists embrace the challenge to be creative within a budget, so you might just be surprised and impressed by what they come up with. — Metro Creatives

teeped in tradition, weddings have featured many of the same components for centuries. Those about to tie the knot may feel somewhat limited in their ability to shape their weddings into unique celebrations of their relationships and love for one another. Although it may not seem like there are many opportunities to put your own stamp on the wedding, there are plenty of ways to do just that. When looking to personalize your wedding ceremony, determine if there might be anything block-
ing you from doing so. For example, if yours will be a religious ceremony, there may be certain rites that need to be followed. Secular ceremonies may offer more opportunities to customize. m Vows are one of the easiest ways to put a personal touch on your wedding. You can select the words you want to exchange during the ceremony as well as any readings during the service. Work with your officiant to narrow down particular phrasing or sentiments that fit with your vision of the wedding and relationship.

m Wedding party members fulfill certain roles during the ceremony, but they are not limited to those tasks alone. Consider asking wedding party members or other friends or family members to take on specialized roles in the wedding. They may be able to do certain readings, escort guests to their seats, light candles, or sing and participate in other ways. m Musical interludes connect with your
personalities as a couple rather than selecting standard songs merely because they are the easier route. Work with the organist or other musicians and request that they perform or play musical pieces that you enjoy.
Submission of engagement and wedding stories and photos is preferred via email to weddings@wctrib.com. Please include the name of a person who can be contacted if there are questions about the submission and either a daytime phone number or an email address that is checked regularly. Forms are available by request at the above email for both engagement and wedding stories, which are published according to Tribune guidelines. Parties may contact advertising if a specifically worded announcement is desired. Engagement and wedding stories are published Saturdays. The deadline is noon Monday for consideration that week. However, publication date is not guaranteed. Engagements will be published free of charge. A good rule of thumb is to submit engagements at least two months before the wedding date. Wedding stories will be published free of charge provided they are received by our office no later than three months after the wedding date. Wedding announcements submitted after the three-month deadline will be handled by display advertising at advertising rates. Photos will be published if quality is satisfactory for reproduction. Professional photos are not required, and color or black and white photos are acceptable. Print photos will be returned if a self-addressed, stamped envelope is provided, or they may be picked up after publication. Information and photos also may be mailed to West Central Tribune, P.O. Box 839, Willmar, MN 56201, or brought to our office at 2208 Trott Ave. S.W., Willmar.
Wedding day tokens of good luck come in many forms, but “the something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue (a sixpence in your shoe)” adage remains one of the most popular luck-enhancing wedding traditions. According to the bridal resource The Knot, this tradition stems from an Olde English rhyme. Something old represents continuity; something new is for optimism for the future; something borrowed stands for borrowed happiness; and something blue is for purity, love and fidelity. The sixpence in your shoe is a wish for good fortune and prosperity, but this is not a tradition widely celebrated outside of the United Kingdom or British territories. These traditions can add some creative flair and personality to wedding ceremonies. There’s no end to the inventive combinations of items brides can carry to increase their good fortunes.

Something old Something old is one of the easier mementos to obtain. There is a good chance that someone in the family is willing to pass an item down to the bride that she can include in her wedding wardrobe. It also can be something the bride may have in her own memory box. Beads taken from a grandmother’s dress or a swatch of fabric from a beloved toy doll are creative ideas that can be sewn into inconspicuous places on gowns.

m Candle lighting, particulary the lighting of unity candles, can blend two families together into one in a symbolic way. Other couples choose different traditions, such as mixing two different-colored sands in a new vessel, to represent the joining of two lives together. You can consider these types of additions for your wedding ceremony or come up with your own unique tradition. — Metro Creatives
A few clever takes on the ‘something old, new, borrowed, blue’ tradition
Publishing wedding news and engagements in the Tribune
Something new Brides already purchase many new items for their wedding day looks, so “something new” should not be too hard to find. Couples may want to work together to find something new they can both carry so they have a matching set upon tying the knot. Interlocking charm bracelets or keychains may work. What about the groom carrying a small padlock and the bride the key? Quirky couples can each wear one sock from a pair. Get clever and have fun. Something borrowed Much like something old, something borrowed is yet another way to pay homage to a friend or family member. It’s also one way to add a sentimental twist to everyday items. Borrow a grandfather’s handkerchief to wrap around the stems of the wedding bouquet. Exchange vows with the original rings used by a distant relative at their own wedding. Flatter a close friend by wearing the same veil she did. Something blue There are many ways to incorporate “something blue” into your wedding ceremony. Brides can paint their toenails blue or wear blue shoes under their gowns. Sew a patch from a pair of denim jeans into the bodice of the dress. Paint the bottom of your shoes bright blue so they stand out when kneeling at the altar. Blue sapphire or topaz jewelry can add an exotic look to the wedding wardrobe. — Metro Creatives
