On February 24th, and for the second year in a row, we invited Tribune readers, as well as our co-workers, to join our news staff in documenting a normal day in the lives of people in west central Minnesota. We asked for tidbits of information from the day, as well as photographs, videos and diaries. We were overwhelmed by the response. Today’s “Focus” sections are a compilation of some of the information we received. The clock tower at Bethel Lutheran Church in downtown Willmar was captured at the start of our day by features writer Dan Burdett. Find more online at wctrib.com

DAY IN THE LIFE - MIDNIGHT HOUR
D2 THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2016
WEST CENTRAL TRIBUNE | WILLMAR, MINN.
12:32 A.M. Michael Swanson is busy making cookies at Casey’s General Store on 19th Avenue Southwest in Willmar. On a typical day at this particular Casey’s, they prepare roughly 115 cake doughnuts, 150 pastries, 80 to 100 breakfast sandwiches and 60-80 slices of breakfast pizza (10-12 large pizzas).
12:15 A.M. The high temperature for the day — 30.2 degrees F — was recorded from the midnight hour through about 8 a.m. 12:36 A.M. “I’d say we have about three to five guests check into the hotel at this time each week,” Best Western Plus night auditor Louis Preuss said, as he checked the vehicle registration cards for guests at the hotel on U.S. Highway 12 East in Willmar. Preuss works the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift and spends his nights taking inventory and running reports for TPI Hospitality.
12:04 A A.M. This car clock shows the exterior temperature to be 30 degrees.
12:50 A.M. A row of semis lines the parking lot at the Cenex Travel Plaza on U.S. Highway 12 East in Willmar. The lot is a popular spot for semi drivers traveling through town who need to break or rest for the night.
12:16 A.M. Larissa Nieland, right, a nurse at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, and Stacy Hurley, the administrative nursing supervisor, perform a check of a crash cart in the hospital’s adult health care unit. The cart is a wheeled container equipped with medicine and supplies, and is typically used to treat a person in or near cardiac arrest. Medical personnel staff the unit 24/7.
ALTERNATE SHIFTS Four percent of Minnesota’s workers — that’s 101,740 — leave for work between midnight and 4:59 a.m., according to 2010 to 2014 American Community Survey five-year estimates. That is compared to 4.4 percent nationwide. Of that total number of 101,740 shift workers in Minnesota, 890 are in Kandiyohi County, and 7,327 are in the seven-county region including the counties of Kandiyohi, Chippewa, McLeod, Meeker, Renville, Stearns and Swift.
MINNESOTA HAS AN ESTIMATED 2,591,496 WORKERS ACCORDING TO A 2014 SURVEY INCLUDING 140,764 IN OUR 7-COUNTY REGION
001404451r1
Another 15 percent of Minnesotans leave for work between noon and midnight, indicating they also work a shift outside of the typical 8-to-5 business day. That amounts to a total of about 19 percent of all Minnesota workers on varying shifts.

1:16 A.M. Antony Peveto makes pizzas in the kitchen at Casey’s General Store on U.S. Highway 12 East in Willmar. Peveto, who works the midnight to 7 a.m. shift, makes pizzas every hour at the 24-hour gas station and convenience store. He said as few as 30 people and as many as 100 people will enter the store during his shift. Pizza as well as doughnuts — which he begins to make around 2 a.m. — always prove popular with customers.
1:39 A.M. “We just had a group of 10 people leave, head bartender Ryan Graupmann said, while pouring a beer for one of the few remaining patrons at Zorbaz on the Lake on Lake Avenue South in Spicer. It’s not uncommon, Graupmann said, for Zorbaz to have large crowds into the wee hours — particularly on weekends — as it’s the only restaurant/bar in Kandiyohi County with a 2 a.m. liquor license. Graupmann works a 5 p.m. to close shift, and usually heads home around 3 a.m.
1:30 A.M. A late (or very early) supper for Dan Wallert of Willmar consists of a steak and fried potatoes and kraut. Wallert works the late shift as a pre-press technician at the West Central Tribune in Willmar. His shift generally runs from 4 p.m. to about 1 a.m. Bedtime for him doesn’t come until about 4 a.m.
BELGRADE, MN
1:49 A.M. Joe Mills slices a pepperoni pizza in the kitchen at Zorbaz on the Lake on Lake Avenue South in Spicer. What makes Zorbaz unique is that its kitchen also remains open until 2 a.m., unlike many bars and similar establishments, which typically stop serving food about an hour before closing.

Your County Does it for You “You don’t really think about it because you don’t have to. After a snowstorm, the roads are cleared so you can get to work on time and your kids to school safely. If there is an accident, you call 911 to summon help quickly. You don’t think about it because it’s your county, Kandiyohi County, doing it for you. Every day in our community, county government is hard at work providing the quality of life services that make our community an outstanding place to live and raise a family. When it comes to recycling, convenient locations are near your home and workplace. At times of relaxation, trails, parks and campgrounds are there to explore. Whether operating programs that keep communities safe or providing emergency services during a disaster or protecting children at risk of abuse, counties are at the foundation of what makes our state great. Take a closer look at your county and you’ll find that 24/7 we are working for you.”

Local Business, Local Tradition In February 2000, Rick & Kelley Dahle followed their dream of owning their own business and opened Cullens Home Center of Willmar. They knew the odds were not on their side. 90% of independently owned businesses fail within the first 3 years. First generation independently owned appliance stores are virtually unheard of nationally. The daunting statistics didn’t dissuade them from trying. “We knew it would be a tough venture,” said Rick, “but that’s one of the reasons to try. I just didn’t know it would be this hard,” he says with a smile.
They first opened in the old Erickson Hardware location in south Willmar. “The location served us well, and we thank Pat Cleary for working with us on a lease we could afford and operate with. Within 3 years we realized we had outgrown the location, and needed more display and warehouse space.” Against their better judgement, they rented the building next to Hennen’s Furniture. “Being new to the community, new in business and struggling financially, moving to a bigger location was neces-

sary but moving over the bridge south of town could have been disastrous”. Says Rick. The odds again felt stacked against them but they made the move and grew their business over the next 4 years. During the recession of 2008 an opportunity presented itself that was a blessing come true. The former Holm Brothers building on south 1st street became available. “The economy was struggling, retail was struggling, we really felt like we had to get in the heart of retail in Willmar” comments Rick. They weren’t sure how they were going NT ST CE RAL TRIB WE to be able to afford UN E the increased rent payment but made the move and started business in their 3rd location. In retail, it is said the 3 most important keys to success are 1. Location 2. Location & 3. Location. Finally, Cullens Home Center of Willmar was in a loca-
tion where roots could be planted and a foundation of success was ready to bloom. Locally owned businesses are often the heart of an economy. With a modest advertising budget, most locally owned businesses depend on word of mouth advertising. The national chain stores create name recognition virtually overnight when opening a new location. Being new to a community, Cullens Home Center recognized word of mouth advertising takes a long time. “We really tried to get involved in the community, we are a very outgoing family so being active in sports, church, service clubs, etc. was a fun and vital part of our focus”, said Rick. Looking back on the last 16 years, Rick has few regrets. “We absolutely love the community, we couldn’t be more blessed. Business has been tough, that’s true.” Many days can feel very humbling but the pity

parties can’t last long. “We know we’re not perfect, far from it,” said Rick, “but we try hard, we care, and we will continue to do our very best to help our customers, our employees and our community every day.” Cullens Home Center is located at 1700 S 1st St in Willmar. They belong to the nation’s largest volume buying group of appliances, electronics and mat-
tresses. They guarantee low prices. Have a parts and service department with 3 certified technicians. Their store hours are Monday – Friday 8am to 6pm, Open late on Thursdays til 8pm and 9am to 5pm on Saturdays. They are closed Sunday’s so their valued employees can be home with their families. “We truly need and appreciate your business and thank you for your support.”

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF RECENTLY RETIRED REPORTER DAVID LITTLE The day began with rise and shine at 7:20 a.m. I made coffee and collected a week’s worth of West Central Tribunes from the curbside tube. Our faithful carrier had saved them for us after we had been out of town for seven days, because I wanted to read what the Willmar City Council was doing. Same old same old, but I was pleased to see Rice Park will get some upgrades. I returned inside from placing the recycling on the curb when I received a call from Donna Middleton at the Tribune asking if I would submit a diary of my day for the Day In The Life project. I agreed, so here I go. After breakfast Marsha and I debated who had time to call church about the evening Lenten program, so I called. After completing the call we discussed the City Council debate on the $10,000 spending policy, and I recalled that
former City Administrator Michael Schmit had made an executive decision to have a condemned house torn down, which the city had been fighting with the owner over, on the east end of the downtown Highway 12 Bypass. Who would have wanted a crappy-looking, run-down house sitting at the entrance to downtown Willmar? I remember the council didn’t make much of a public fuss about that (sizable) spending decision. Some nice landscaping now marks the site. Donna wanted a photo of me, so I told her I’d be having coffee with the 10 a.m. Wednesday morning group at Deidra’s, where two of the regulars, Bill Borth and Jerry Gesch, and I spent an hour solving the world’s problems and creating Bill Borth, from left, David Little and Jerry Gesch a few more. enjoy morning coffee at Deidra’s in Willmar. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF PATTY VIANE
6:30 A.M. Patty Viane gets a shot of Abraham Peter, from left, Blake Goodall, Jackson Peter and Kyle Felling playing basketball at 6:30 am at BBE High School. Viane is in charge of food service for the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa schools. This morning she was at the high school in Belgrade.
9:58 A.M. Viane visited the BBE Family and Consumer Sciences class, taught by Mrs. Hagemeyer. Among the student showing off their de orated cupcakes are Kelsey Rosengreen, from left, Amanda Kellman, Morgan Weller and Bailey Buchholz.
9:58 A.M. Amanda Kellman decorated some of her cupcakes into animal characters.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ALLISON GIRRES, RENVILLE COUNTY LIBRARIAN 8 a.m. — Up and at ’em – breakfast, shower, etc. 9:30 a.m. — At my offi e in Olivia. I usually arrive between 9 and 10 but my schedule is pretty flexible so some days if I’m going to be working later in the evening I will work from noon to 8 or something. I like being in the offi e a bit early most days though because most of the county libraries aren’t open yet so it’s some nice uninterrupted time for email, etc. 10:30 a.m. — Order materials. I order materials every month for the month coming up (so in February I’m finishing up deciding what books we’ll order for March). We order 20 to 70 items per library per month, so it takes a bit of time. I try to balance what’s popular and newer items you might not have heard of. Noon — Delivery of new books We’re a bit short-staffed today so I’m working on the desk once we’re open at 12. Most of the Renville County libraries get delivery twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays, but Olivia gets an extra delivery on Wednesdays. When
Matt, our delivery driver, arrives we try to get the books checked in as quickly as possible so we can call or email people to let them know their holds are in. We also process new books that have arrived. Most of the processing, like putting barcodes and call numbers on the books, happens in our Willmar branch but we do a couple of little things once they arrive here, like put them up on the website and put “NEW” stickers on them. 12:30 p.m. — Helping patrons. I help a woman find some books she’s looking for, and then I help another patron with scanning his resume so he can email it to someone. He also decides to order some computer help books, as he’s gotten a new computer and isn’t that familiar with it. 1:30 p.m. — Run to the mechanic’s to get a quote on a repair my car needs and then grab a sandwich while I’m out. 2 p.m. — Extended fight with the fax machine, which is refusing to send faxes. 3 p.m. — March prep. — work on the calendar for March, making sure all shifts a e covered, and scheduling events like story time
(DAVID LITTLE From Page H1)
and book clubs. I also read a couple of articles online about book clubs for middle and high schoolers to see how other libraries handle them and get some ideas. 4:30 p.m. — Check my email again 5 p.m. — Back to the front desk so my co-worker can take a dinner break since she will be here until we close at 8 tonight. Normally this would be the night my book club meets but we decided to skip February because of people’s schedules so I head home at 6. 6:00 p.m. — Grocery store 6:30 p.m. — Home, cook dinner, watch some TV and read. One of my professors when I was in school told us that as librarians, it’s part of our job to read something every day and I’ve tried to take that to heart. I also try to read varied things so that I can talk with people about books they like. Right now I’m reading a fantasy novel and a historical romance novel. 11 p.m. — Check my calendar and then bed. Because my schedule varies quite a bit I make it a habit to check my calendar before I go to bed so I know when I have to be up and out of the house tomorrow.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ELLERY KNIGHT, A WILLMAR HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR Wednesday morning started as any other day. I woke up to an alarm and hit the snooze button twice, leaving me rushing to get ready for school. That was 8:10 in the morning. My hair has dried into crazy waves, so luckily I had my sister to help straighten those out for me. She really saved me some time. One of my friends, Lucas Yoakum, had started a thing he calls “Cool Clothes Wednesday,” so I made sure to put some of my coolest clothes on before rushing out to my car by 8:30. My car was warm and the sun was bright, so I started my day with good feelings. My sister, Lauren, wanted to get food before school, but I didn’t think we had time. That was until we got down the street and I began thinking about smoothies. The two of us made a quick stop to get smoothies on an impulse and I don’t regret it. They tasted great. Once I arrived at school, I realized I was a lot later than usual. I actually had to park behind someone today, which is something I never do. I just hoped they would leave school earlier than I would. I hate backing out of parking spaces. I start my school day off with E onomics and my teacher had given us a day to work on reviews for our test the next day. For me, though, I had finished my review over the few days prior so I didn’t have much to do. I used that extra time to get ahead on some of my other homework. My next class was Pre-Calculus, which was fine. We got through a lesson and I actually finished my assignment before the school day ended. Journalism came after that, and we had a pretty relaxed day as well. I had plenty of time to line up interviews and write some stuff up. Ramp Up followed journalism, and the senior class had meetings one-on-one with their advisers. After that, I went to choir and sang some songs in preparation for the Women’s Choir Festival this weekend in Fargo. I guess my school day was overall relaxing, which is unusual, but I sure didn’t mind it. After school, I always meet my friends and we chat about our days for a while until the rush of cars leaves the parking lot. I stayed and talked for a while, but when I left I had o back out of my parking space. The person in front of me hadn’t left et at that point. I wasn’t home long, because I had to turn back around to the high school to take some photos for the yearbook. I had gotten bestdressed for the Senior Hall of Fame, so I wore something I thought was dressed up, but felt underdressed when the person I was taking the photo with showed up in a bow tie and some sort of suit jacket. The photos were done quickly, so I sat in for a little bit of “The Lion King Jr.” rehearsal. I was impressed, there are some really great singers they have on their crew. Once I finally got home, it was around 5:30, so I called up Lucas. He came over and the two of us watched some TV. Eventually, though, I was back on the road. The two of us had Guy-Girl dance practice and had to pick up my sister on the way. Sadly, not many people showed up, so our practice was cut short. A few of us used the gym space to play with the different sporting equipment they had. It made the drive to practice a little more worthwhile. At home, I spent the night hanging out with Lucas, until he left a ound 10. I did the remaining homework I had in a very short amount of time and even treated myself to a bath. My Wednesday was a little different than most of my Wednesday’s, more relaxed with a lot less school work, but I’m definitely not complaining.

24 ON THE 24TH - DIARIES
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF WILLMAR HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR LOGAN R. KORTGARD Wednesday the 24th started out like a typical Wednesday. I woke up late, even on a ramp-up day, where school starts an hour later. At 8:20, I woke up, brushed my teeth and got ready for my day. Around 8:34 I arrived in the kitchen and was greeted by the smell of cinnamon rolls, something I don’t usually have, but it was a welcome change. After breakfast, I drove to school and got ready for my first classes of the day, Cardinal Band and Choir. Since it was a short day, classes are only about an hour long, so that meant music flew by. The rest of my classes of the day sped by. I had Calculus, Spanish 5 and CP Chemistry in that order. However,
during lunchtime, the pep band performed for the wrestlers as they left or state. I always love playing pep band, and it is so much fun seeing a lot of students coming out in support of the athletes. After school, I was scheduled to take a photo with a friend for the Senior Hall of Fame. It was effortless. We knew exactly what we wanted to do for the photo, so we were in and out within minutes. Next, I frantically ran home to grab some papers for a scholarship I needed to mail and sped to the post offi e. Once there, I was greeted by this lovely lady, who aided me as I contemplated what method to use to send my scholarship. We agreed express would be the best way. Immediately thereafter, I went to
Walgreens and bought something to drink before I headed back to the high school for practice. I had to go back to the high school to practice my speech piece with my duo partner, Sydney. Sydney and I have been working extremely hard on our duo for the past couple of months, and today was no exception. We made a couple of changes to the way we present our duo, with the help of Coach Laura. Soon after, I went and grabbed some food and headed home. At home, I began to do my homework, took a shower, and went to bed at around 11. My day wasn’t a typical day for me, it was a day with a lot more going on than normal. However, with being a high school senior comes a full schedule with tons of extracurriculars, homework, scholarships and college preparations. With all of this going on, my life is never lackluster.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF KAITLYN MATHIOWETZ & CHELSEY NIEMEYER Kaitlyn Mathiowetz and Chelsey Niemeyer, both sophomores at Yellow Medicine East High School in Granite Falls, agreed to tag-team on journaling their school day. Here is a combined compilation of their day: 9:01 a.m. First Hour — Kaitlyn Had gym class in the auditorium. We are doing an archery unit for that class. My arm is double-jointed so it sticks out and the bow string hit it every time I fired an arrow. Now because of that it hurts to move my left arm. I can’t even touch it or close my arm. 9:10 a.m. Second Hour — Chelsey It’s ITV Spanish II. It sucks that it’s on the TV screen. I feel the class would be much easier if we, first of all, had the same teacher as Spanish One. At first I didn’t like this class, but I find it getting easier as the year goes on. I just have to learn how to pronounce the words without sounding like a typical white girl. 10:03 a.m. Third Hour — Kaitlyn Ramp up to readiness. It’s Wednesday so the whole school has ramp up to readiness. It is supposed to help prepare us for college but really it's a waste of half an hour. Tomorrow is a whole day of ramp
up. Even more of a waste. I normally use this hour as a nap time. 10:46 a.m. Fourth Hour — Chelsey The best hour there is. Why? Because I have it with the best person who’s ever been born. Keria Ross. Also, it’s choir, which is the easiest class there is. It the best class there is as long as the student teacher isn’t there trying to teach us how to count like 4-year-olds. Anyways, our choir concert is in three school days and we’re not ready at all but our teacher is pretty calm about it, like he knows that we’re going to nail it in the end like we always do. 11: 50 a.m. Fifth Hour — Kaitlyn The worst hour of the day. Not because I don't understand the subject but I can't stand the teacher. I am actually really good at math. But the only geometry teacher in this school can’t teach. We have a test in his class and he has yet to teach us anything about the subject, like normal I had to teach myself and help about 4 other people too. 12:15 p.m. Sixth Hour — Chelsey U.S. history. We have a test this Friday over WWII. I love learning about war, it comes easy to me. It’s another class where there’s a lack of effort in the student body. Yes, I do realize that there is different study/ learning styles but not turning in
your homework isn’t a study habit, it’s plain laziness. 1:17 p.m. Lunch — Kaitlyn Not enough food and it's not very good. Our school has open lunch for grades 10 through 12 so I could go get better food but I'm broke. 1:24 p.m. Seventh Hour — Chelsey Pretty chilled. It’s biology. We don’t do much so to say. It’s the same as every other class. The only thing different is that he gives us all of our homework at once and it’s due when we take the test. That’s quite nice. 2:45 p.m. Eighth Hour — Chelsey My last hour of the day is English II. It gets pretty loud in this class but that’s expected when you put thirty kids from this generation in a classroom. We’re lazy and disrespectful most of the time and I don’t like it. How rude students are to the teachers and act like they didn’t do anything when they get in trouble. 2:50 p.m. Eighth Hour — Kaitlyn Almost done with school. Found out that we are not doing a big send off for the two guys that made it to state wrestling. We did this big send off for the dance line. Anyway in English it's a work day for our personal narrative we have to write and present.
