Q&A: A peek into the world of interior designers Dan Burdett dburdett@wctrib.com For many homeowners, their vision of what a home should look like isn’t always achievable without the eye of a interior designer. Interior Design Studio in Willmar is one of a number of similar businesses in the region dedicated to bringing a homeowner’s vision to life. The business, founded in 1984 by Mary Weimerskirch, is located at 344 Litchfield Ave. in downtown Willmar, and boasts three designers with more than 80 years of combined experience. The Tribune recently spoke with one of those designers – Jayne Birk-Engelmann – to discuss how she works with a client to achieve the perfect look for their home. Q: Why do you think someone should consider having someone design or redesign the interior of their home? A: As a designer, we can help give you the wow factor you’ve been looking for. Thinking outside the box is what designers do all day long. We can give

you a professional assessment of your situation, that will lead to a solid plan of action. Also, we can help you avoid costly mistakes that will not only save you money, but increase the value of your home. Typically, designers have experienced most of the mistakes for you and know ahead of time the right way to go. Q: How do you help someone discover their own style and communicate that with you? A: One of the ways that can help is to have the customer gather pictures that will portray the styles and designs that they like and enjoy. It’s then up to us to help incorporate that vision into their own home. Great spaces do not happen by accident. One must have scale, proportion, balance, rhythm, emphasis and harmony. Q: Is there an area or aspect of a home you find most people dislike most and want to change? A: Your home should be everything that you want it to be, and a good designer can make

Q&A: From Page D3 that possible, whatever project you endeavor. It can depend on the time of year, typically in the fall and winter months, the focus could be on a new fireplace, or maybe the change would be best suited in the bedroom to make the space feel warm and cozy. Q: What are the most-popular design themes and where do you think people draw inspiration from? A: We want to help you to enhance your space and the quality of your life in the space. Having someone help make your house a home, and offer an extra set of eyes – but those eyes are trained to see and notice things you may not. Our goal is to work with you, refining your vision, taking your ideas and making them better. One can draw inspiration from almost any starting point, and use it to achieve a harmonious balance for your home. Q: What is your signature design and where do you find inspiration? A: There are lots of items available to designers that are not available to the general public in terms of connections, resources and general merchandise. I per-

sonally draw from the customer’s own style and flair, then help make the space look more collected, unique and pulled together. I love to make old things new again, for instance, by taking a cherished piece you’ve had forever, breathing new life into it, then working around that piece for your home. It’s all about the customer. I never want the customer to worry they would have someone else’s style forced upon them.

Pretty and practical

Set the mood Choose a color theme and buy or make items that coordinate with it. Pair white with cool colors such as pale aqua and lime green, or any soft pastel, for a fresh vibe that’s sure to lighten and brighten your mood. Glitzy finishes, such as gold or silver, will lend a touch of glamour to your desktop, and hot pink, bright yellow or vibrant blues and greens can subtly spur the energy you need to stay on task. A DIY wall-mounted bulletin board, covered in your choice of fabric, could be the inspiration for your color story.

Make your desk space work for you with accessories that spark visual appeal By Pamela Knudson Forum News Service

Add some flourish to your desk with bedazzling hot pink accessories such as a stapler, calculator, scissors, pen holder and matching binder from Hobby Lobby in Grand Forks, N.D. You can rev up the visual appeal with a few pretty accessories that pump a bit of sparkle into your workspace and make keeping track of kids’ schedules and paying bills a lot more fun. Remember, your goal is to create a well-organized and

attractive space where you can find what you need quickly, perform the task efficiently and return everything to its proper place when you’re finished. Here are a few tips to achieve work-friendly organization at your desk in a way that’s also friendly to the eye: 001476556r1

Fall is all about settling back into the routine of school and other scheduled activities that gear up this time of year. That calls for a tidy desk where all the details of your personal or family lifestyle can be corralled. But who says this little nerve-center of organization in your home has to look boring and spartan, devoid of personality?

Jesse Trelstad / Forum News Service

Easy access to necessities Keep things you use most often within easy reach. Having paper clips, stapler, scissors, note pad, calculator, post-it notes, and a pen and pencil holder nearby will prevent a time-wasting search. In the home office section of stores such as Hobby Lobby, you’ll find a wide array of useful items, arranged by color or pattern, that elevate the fun factor when you shop.

You may want to designate a paper tray, or in-box, for all incoming paper items. Remind family members that this is the place to drop new stuff that requires your attention. For subjects you refer to frequently, consider using a staggered vertical desktop file holder that allows you to see all the file subject labels at a glance.

Manage paper

In spite of our increasing reliance on electronic devices, paper — such as letters, bills and notes — can still pile up, not to mention the frustration that builds when you can’t quickly locate a particular item. Paper can clutter up a desk space quicker than you can say “I give up,” and it’s often the biggest culprit when it comes to messy desks. Harness it in pretty file folders you can tuck into a drawer or in binders that can be labeled and lined up together, like books, between bookends. Or choose a more informal look with attractive, standard paper-sized baskets or bins to

Pretty: From Page D6 capture bills, important documents, and school- or sports-related information.

Make it personal, inspirational Although it’s good to keep your desktop from getting too crowded, pictures of family members and friends and inspirational messages on wooden blocks can add to the overall positive atmosphere. Arrange a couple of your favorite pictures in a multiunit frame and place the remainder on shelves or in other parts of the home. Home decorating departments in stores such as Hobby Lobby have a wide variety of blocks with clever or funny sayings or simple truths that you can stand up on their own or set in a picture-frame stand. An uplifting or encouraging thought can give just the boost you need to tackle the minutiae that flows daily into every household. If uncontrolled, that kind of stuff can unravel your peace of mind.

With autumn comes crisp falling leaves, fresh brisk air and pumpkin spice aromas. It’s time to prepare your home to spend more time indoors, decorating it with warm, cozy accents to set the tone for the season. Make your home fall-ready with the following cozy ideas. 1. Freshen up with soothing aromas. A little “me time” is good for the soul, and sometimes you need to pamper yourself after a long day. Whether the scent is apple cinnamon, pumpkin pie or maple leaf, lighting a candle with your favorite fall fragrance creates a warm and

4. Innovate with multi-functional appeal. Since you’ll be spending more time inside, transform an empty space like a basement or attic into a useful area for the entire family. With a little imagination and a few tools, you can create a vibrant and playful craft room, as did FrogTape Paintover Challenge winner KariAnne Wood from the blog “Thistlewood Farms.” Wood transformed an unused upstairs space in her home into a room for her children to craft, study and hang out with friends. An exciting, multi-functional space is a great way to avoid cabin fever in the months ahead. 5. Give guests a warm greeting. Celebrity designer Taniya Nayak correctly predicted home design elements that incorporate typographic elements would be a key design trend in 2016. This trend is all about setting the tone for a space with inspirational quotes, personalization and warm greetings. Welcome guests by playing up the autumnal theme with phrases like, “Hello Fall” or “Give Thanks” on decorative wooden planks

Consider using various font types and sizes to achieve a different feel for each block of text. 6. Deck out curb appeal Nothing sets a good impression like an attractive entryway and front door. Greet guests with a festive hello by decking out the porch with pumpkins and planting seasonal floral

arrangements along the pathway, or creating a fall-inspired wreath to hang on the door. You can even collect a handful of colorful leaves outside to string together and post along your porch fence for extra curb appeal. StatePoint

welcoming atmosphere, enhancing your sense of calm. 2. Create a living room sanctuary. Transform your living room into an at-home getaway by displaying seasonal throw pillows and blankets, and adorning the space with elements from nature, like a vase filled with leaf stems and crab apple branches. Crank up the cozy factor with homemade hot cider and a crackling fireplace. 3. Refresh interiors with paint. Give rooms a refreshing update, add color and create contrast in a space with accent walls. Deep colors like navy blue help create a relaxing retreat. Or, take a cue from the changing leaves and opt for warm colors, like mustard yellow or burnt orange. To ensure a top-notch paint job, use a premium brand painter’s tape that will deliver sharp paint lines. Be sure to use a tape that features patented PaintBlock Technology, which reacts with the water in latex paint and instantly gels to form a micro-barrier that seals the edges of the tape to help prevent paint bleed.

Simplest method to remove old house paint

CROWS NEST

TREE SERVICE

By James Dulley Creators Syndicate Dear James: I need to paint my house which has wood siding. The paint is in pretty bad shape. What is the proper way to scrape and prepare the wood surface so the paint will stay on longer and look better? — Missy D. Dear Missy: You are thinking along the right lines. When people say they are going to paint their house, the painting phase is actually only about 10 percent of the project. The preparation takes, by far, the majority of the time and elbow grease. After all the preparation, the painting is the fun part of the job. The proper steps when painting a house are washing, scraping, sanding, repairing, priming, and then finally applying the finish topcoat of house paint. No matter how good the quality of the paint is, you cannot expect it to adhere to old dirty, peeling paint. Paint must have a stable base. First wash the walls to remove dirt, grease and extremely loose paint chips. If you use a pressure washer to clean the walls, you must be careful because a pressure washer can do considerable damage. If a powerful stream of water is shot directly at the siding, and it can force water into it and up under the siding. This is particularly true for twostory homes when are you directing the water stream up from the ground. It is better to use the pressure washer on a low-power stream to distribute the cleaner over the walls and to later rinse them with fresh water. A solution of water, TSP (trisodium phosphate) and bleach (to kill mildew) is most effective. You must cover any vegetation near the house. Also, first totally saturate the ground near house with water to dilute any solution that runs off. Environmentally-safe cleaners are also available, which I recommend.

Once the cleaning solution is on the walls, give it time to work. It is best to do this washing in the early morning or late evening when there is no direct sun and less wind so it will not dry too quickly. Use the pressure washer on low power again to rinse the walls with fresh water. When the walls are dry, it is time to start the scraping. There are several scraping options: hand scraper, power scraper, chemical strippers, and heat strippers. Hand scraping is the most work, but it is still the most effective method to remove layers of old, deteriorating paint.

Old Paint: From Page D9 A good-quality hand scraper will have a handle and a tall knob. It is designed to be a two-handed operation. Always pull the scraper toward your body. This provides more force and less chance it will dig into the wood and damage it. Select a scraper with a hard carbide blade instead of an inexpensive mild steel blade. The steel blades will dull quickly, making the job more difficult and increasing the possibility of damaging the wood. Once you have all the loose paint removed, sand the surface. This serves

two purposes. First, it provides a slightly roughened surface to which the primer can adhere better. Second, it will feather the edges along the spots where the old paint has peeled off. Repair any bad spots with wood repair materials or even automobile body filler. Paint the surface with a good primer selected for the type of topcoat paint you will use. Say hello to a new wallpaper Removable wallpaper opens possibilities in the world of interior design By Pamela Knudson Forum News Service Not ready for a long-term commitment? Why not just have a fling with wallpaper instead? Removable or temporary wallpaper is “a relatively new” option for people looking to infuse some personality, color, texture or pattern into a room or to jazz up an accent wall, said Liz Orr, an executive team leader at Target. “It’s a great option for students who are moving into dorms and people who live in apartments,” Orr said. Target carries a temporary wallpaper brand, Devine Color Prints and Patterns, that’s easy to apply, reposition-

able and removable. Installation is as easy as peel and stick, and it requires no special tools. The vinyl product should be applied on a clean, primed and painted wall that’s in good condition, Orr said. “It’s quite pretty.” Let your imagine roam through a variety of neutral colors – gray, taupe and pale greens – and textures, woodgrains and geometric patterns including stripes and chevron shapes. Choices range from soft and subtle to bold and dramatic. The label on each Devine Color package shows three complementary paint colors suggested for adjacent walls or other surfaces. Devine Color paints, positioned next to the wallpaper, come in spray, brush-ready and chalkboard paint versions.

New ideas Temporary wallpaper has prompted consumers to think differently about wallpaper, home decorating experts say. It’s especially appealing to DIYers who want to spice up a lackluster space such as the foyer or another spot in the home. It can be used on various surfaces, including doors, furniture, accent pieces and even kitchen cupboards – especially inside those with glass doors.

“A person could change the entire look of a room in a short amount of time,” said a spokesperson for Sherwin Williams. “You can hang it in minutes rather than hours” as traditional wallpaper demands. Sherwin-Williams stores offer, often through special order, a brand called EasyChange Wallpaper, that’s fully washable and easy to install. The nonvinyl wallpaper includes some selections that are “paste the wall” types, while others are pre-pasted. The product won’t expand or contract, meaning no more seam separations, and it’s guaranteed to go up and come down effortlessly. You can simply remove it by pulling it off the wall – no special tools or solvents are needed. “It’s good for kids’ rooms (allowing for change) as they grow,” Carlisle said. Removable wallpaper is a particularly good option for those who are not comfortable with the permanent aspect of wallpaper. Generally less expensive than traditional wallpaper, removable wallpaper is an economical way to rev up your space without doing any damage to walls. It’s also an attractive option for people who are looking for something different – such as an accent piece or an art piece.

Regrout discolored tiles in an old bathroom floor By James Dulley Creators Syndicate

Dear James: The grout in my bathroom tile is discolored and crumbling in spots. It look terrible. Do I have to remove all the tiles and start over or can I just repair the existing grout? — Tracy G. Dear Tracy: If only the grout is deteriorating and your tile is still in good shape, then there is no need to remove tile. It is important to repair crumbling grout. Moisture can get behind it and damage the wall underneath, requiring you to remove all the tile too. Regrouting bathroom tile is not a difficult task. It requires a gentle touch, not the biceps of Arnold, The Terminator. You must be very careful not to scratch or chip the tile. If you do, replacing several pieces of tile is no picnic. Unfortunately, you cannot just slap more grout over the bad spots. All of the grout, at

least in a particular area must be removed first. You may get an effective functional seal by just replacing the crumbling spots, but it will be difficult to match the new grout to the old. Removing old grout is a painstakingly meticulous task that requires a steady hand. Skip your second cup of coffee so you are not jittery. As you are working, just keep telling yourself that the fun part, applying the new grout, comes next, and you will get through it. You can use either the tried and true hand removal method (chisel and hammer) or a small electric detail grinder like a Dremmel. If this is your first time attempting grout repair, stick with the hand method. The Dremmel can get away from you and quickly damage a tile. Definitely wear safety glasses for this task because grout chips will fly. I use a narrow chisel. Some people use a thin

screwdriver and pound on the handle, but a chisel transfers the impact to the grout crisper for quicker removal. Lay a drop cloth in the tub to avoid scratches. Hold the chisel at a 45-degree angle to a crumbling spot. This weakened spot will be the easiest starting point. Be extremely gentle until you get about a one-inch section removed. Once this spot is open, you can get a little more aggressive with the hammer. Always chisel out the next spot in the direction of the removed area and continue to work away from the cleared area. It is much easier to break out the grout if it just has to slip to the open area. If chiseling in the reverse direction, the grout will be compressed with each blow. Although it is important to remove most of the grout, you needn’t clean off 100 per-

cent of it. There will still be some sticking to the sides of the tile. If you try to chip it off too cleanly, I can guarantee that you will chip a tile. Now the worst is over and you can have that second cup of coffee. There are several types of grout that you can use. I recommend a dry set grout with latex adhesives. Make sure to get wall tile grout that has no sand. Do not mix too much grout initially. Since you are a firsttimer, you will work slowly and the grout will set up and be wasted. Mix in the water until the grout is the texture of icing. Using a hard rubber float, smear the grout into the gaps in a several square foot area. Don’t try too big an area. Take your damp grout sponge and rub it in a circular pattern over the tiles. Keep rinsing it in the water buckets and wiping until the tiles are clean. Now run the edge of the sponge along each grout joint to smooth it and you are done.

Easy ways to weatherize your home Extreme temperatures – hot or cold – can send your energy bills through the roof while also creating an uncomfortable living space for your family. Almost two-thirds of American adults live in a home that needs weatherization, according to a recent online survey, commissioned by Duck brand, conducted by Harris Poll. To bring down energy costs and make the temperature in your home more comfortable, consider defending your home with helpful tools like Roll-On Window Kits, Double Draft Seals, Socket Sealers and Attic

Stairway Covers. You can also adjust ceiling fans, install a programmable thermostat and open or close curtains to leverage sunlight and shade. To learn more about weatherization products and ways you can make your home more comfortable and efficient, visit duckbrand.com/weatherization.
