Willmar Lakes Area ready to host Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener By Linda Vanderwerf lvanderwerf@wctrib.com Willmar mid-April blizzard and icecold lakes have done nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the dozens of people planning the 2018 Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener. The May 10-13 celebration will showcase lakes in Kandiyohi County and the Willmar area, said Beth Fischer, the event director and executive director of the Willmar Lakes Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. More than 100 media outlets are expected to join Gov. Mark Dayton and other state officials for the opener. The fishing season officially begins May 12. A send-off ceremony will be at 8 a.m. that day at Saulsbury Beach County Park in Spicer for those heading out on the water. Many events have been planned for media visitors and invited guests, including a Thursday golf tournament, a variety of tours of the area, a shore lunch Saturday, and breakfasts Saturday and Sunday. A number of radio stations will broadcast live Friday morning from Zorbaz on Green Lake. Local volunteer fishing hosts will be paired with visitors for Saturday’s fishing. For the community, the Rockin’ Robbins Fishin’ Edition community picnic and concert will run from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Friday. A free community picnic will be served to the first 3,000 people. Residents and visitors will

have a chance to meet representatives from the governor’s office and listen to the Dam Jammers, one of the region’s most popular bands. A kids’ fishing event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at Neer Park in New London. Though Green Lake had 26 inches of ice a month before the opener, organizers have been confident that Dayton will be fishing there the morning of the opener. If for some reason Green Lake isn’t ready, “it would be a shame, but we have a lot of great fishing lakes,” Fischer said. “They’ll still have a good time while they’re here.” “We’ve been planning for a good year and a half,” Fischer said. “It’s a real community-led volunteer event.” Planning included a central committee and 13 subcommittees. According to information from the group, the event will have 350 guests, 110 fishing hosts and 400 volunteers. “It’s about showcasing what we have across the area,” Fischer said. “We want to make them part of it.” The publicity value of the event is estimated to be about $1.3 million. Planners chose tours that would highlight what they like to do in the area, she said, and their hope is that people who hear about the area will visit this year or in the future. “I think people should know we couldn’t do this without our local business community coming together to help sponsor,” Fischer said. “It takes lots of manpower, but it also takes the business community.”

Here for the fun! Co-hosts leading opener’s customer service team By Tom Cherveny tcherveny@wctrib.com Spicer reat customer service starts with enjoying what you do. So when it came to organizing the 110 hosts who will be the very face of what this area has to offer for the Governor’s Fishing Opener, it should come as no surprise – the Willmar Area Lakes Convention and Visitors Bureau turned to Laura and Dean Anfinson to take on the challenge of co-hosting the county’s customer service representatives. As the managers of Kandiyohi County Park 5 on Green Lake, they feel they have the best of all worlds. “Meeting the people. Neat people from all walks of life,’’ said Laura when asked what she loves most about her role at the park. “And everybody is here to have fun. Everybody is on vacation,’’ her husband, Dean quickly added. “They leave their stress behind. This is their escape from the real world and we’re lucky to be a small part of it.’’ Actually, they are a big part of it. From the fishing opener to Labor Day, it’s up to the Anfinsons to meet the needs of as many as 250 to 300 guests who might be enjoying the park on any given day. They tend to a busy concessions store and serve up the hard-scoop ice cream that keeps the locals coming. They take care of a 64-site, full hookup campground and its guests, maintain the

... Everybody is here to have fun. They leave their stress behind. This is their escape from the real world and we’re lucky to be a small part of it. DEAN ANFINSON, co-manager, Kandiyohi County Park 5 park’s spacious grounds, and watch over a boat dock and sell gasoline. It can be busy, busy, busy, according to the Anfinsons. “If we didn’t enjoy it, it’d be tough to do because it is a lot of work. It is a lot of hours,’’ said Laura. She has been with the county parks for 20 years. Dean is in his 15th year at County Park 5. They have been together for eight years, and have four children. Being with the park system has allowed them to be with their children, which is exactly what they wanted. The opportunity to give their children work experience and the lessons and friendships that result from working with the public means a lot to them. Laura is a New LondonSpicer High School graduate and holds a degree in psychology from St. Cloud State University. Dean is a Willmar High School graduate who holds a law enforcement degree from St. Cloud State University. He has been active in law enforcement for 22 years,

Laura and Dean Anfinson are serving as co-chairs to lead the hosts who will be taking Governor Mark Dayton and visiting media on local waters for the 2018 Governor’s Fishing Opener. currently serving as a parttime officer with the Lower Sioux Community Police and previously with the Minnesota State Patrol. Dean and Laura also are part-time teachers in the Ridgewater College customized education department. Yes they have plenty to do, not to mention the high school graduation of their son Colten to get ready for this spring. So when Beth Fischer, director of the Willmar Area Lakes Visitors and Convention Center, called and said it would be cool if they would consider being co-hosts for the fishing hosts, they thought on it a bit before saying “yes.” They’re happy they agreed. The volunteers who have come forward as hosts have been great to work with, as have the other volunteers who are part of the 14 subcommittees working

on the Governor’s Fishing Opener, they explained. They are also looking forward to providing the best-in-service to the many guests who will be discovering the area during the big weekend. They said their experience at the park has made them very familiar with the many amenities available for visitors to explore in the area. They often handle inquiries from their guests at the park looking for ideas on what to explore in the area, they noted. And of course, they certainly know what Green Lake has to offer. They estimate that about 75 percent of the visitors to the county park are attracted to the lake for the recreational opportunities it offers, whether that is a cool plunge in its clear waters on a hot summer day or time on the water for a boat ride. About 25 percent of the guests are there for the fishing.

Green Lake has a long tradition when it comes to fishing. Every year they watch as parents and grandparents introduce a new generation to the pleasures and challenges of fishing the big, deep lake. Dean loves to fish as well, and looks forward to assisting the governor and media representatives from around the state – and beyond – discover these waters. But don’t worry, they know the Governor’s Fishing Opener is about much more than just the fishing. As they’ve told those willing to serve as hosts for the weekend, it’s all about introducing visitors to all of the recreational opportunities found in the area. “This is huge for us,’’ said Dean. It’s an opportunity to plant the seeds that will keep people coming through the summer and the years ahead, he explained.

ROCKIN’ ROBBINS to ROCK the fishing opener By Shelby Lindrud slindrud@wctrib.com Willmar he traditional Governor’s Fishing Opener community picnic will have a definite Willmar flair, as it will be joined with the popular summertime concert series, Rockin’ Robbins. “It is the only public event leading up to the opener,” said Kasey Baker, who helped plan the community picnic along with her husband, Shane Baker. The fun at Rockin’ Robbins Fishin’ Edition will start at 4:30 and run until 8 p.m. Friday, May 11, at Robbins Island Regional Park in Willmar. “It is a way for all of us to give back and come together; celebrate the tradition of fishing,” Kasey Baker said. At 4:45 p.m. a program will officially kick it all off. Willmar Mayor Marv Calvin will give the welcoming address, with the Kandiyohi County Board of Commissioners, Calvin and the mayors of Spicer and New London leading the Pledge of Allegiance. There will also be additional comments from other elected officials, including the Department of Natural Resources Commissioner and a representative of Explore Minnesota Tourism. Baker said organizers hope Gov. Mark Dayton will make an appearance as well, but his schedule for the weekend is still unknown. An important part of every picnic is the food. “We plan to serve 3,000plus,” Baker said, with the first 3,000 concert goers receiving a free meal. Jennie-O Turkey Store has donated the shredded turkey for the sandwiches, while Old Dutch is providing the chips and Capt. Ken’s is bringing

the beans. “All this food has been donated,” Baker said. Even the music will have a local flavor. Returning to Rockin’ Robbins for the third year is Renville County’s own Dam Jammers. “The group has been such a hit for Rockin’ Robbins. It seemed like a good fit,” Baker said. The music should begin about 5:30 p.m. The band itself is excited to be part of the Governor’s Fishing Opener. “We are thrilled,” said band member Joe Haen. “It is our biggest gig of the year. It is a big one. It is a big stage for us.” In addition to the picnic and concert, there will also be a variety of activities for the entire family. The Girl Scouts Lakes and Pines Council will hold a dry land casting clinic. Local lakes will give governor a cold welcome Cold water temps mean walleyes can be found in shallow waters By Tom Cherveny tcherveny@wctrib.com WILLMAR – Although Green Lake was free of ice sooner than many anticipated it would be this year, it is still sure to give Governor Mark Dayton and his entourage a cold welcome when they arrive. Official ice-out date was recorded Thursday, May 3, by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Median iceout date for Davenport Green Lake, according to DNR records, is April 16. The latest ice-out date recorded is May 8, 2013. “The water is going to be damn cold,’’ said Harley Davenport, a member of the Little Crow Anglers and one of the volunteer hosts for the fishing opener. Cold water Shimek doesn’t nece s s a r i l y translate to a cold bite. The cold water means walleye will be in shallower waters, making them more accessible to many anglers, according to Davenport and fellow Little Crow Anglers Ron Shimek, Ron Markfelder and Dean Eichelberger. The four offered plenty of ideas on how to fish Kandiyohi County’s most popular fishing destination on the big weekend. They also offered advice on other area lakes to wet a line. That’s the beauty of

Tribune file photo

Members of the Little Crow Anglers offer plenty of ideas on how to fish Kandiyohi County’s most popular fishing destination on the big weekend. They also offered advice on other area lakes to wet a line. Kandiyohi County, they point out. There’s a good mix of shallow, and medium- and deep-water lakes, giving anglers the diversity of waters to keep their interest from the opening weekend through the dog days of summer heat. There’s mixed views on whether the walleye of Green Lake will have spawned before the o p e n e r . Markfelder Dave Coahran, fisheries supervisor with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in Spicer, believes the spawn will be completed. In previous years with a late ice out, the spawn has occurred under the ice, he explained. When the spawn is com-

plete, the female walleye will seek out the warmest waters in the lake. That will put them in places you would not normally look for them, like muddy, shallow bays, said Coahran. No matter where you seek them in Green Lake, shiners are the bait to entice the walleye on the opener, according to the Little Crow Anglers. They recommend a slow Eichelberger presentation. Pull a sliding sinker like a Lindy rig up a drop off. Or better yet, park yourself and toss out a slip bobber over a rocky bottom. “A lot of people don’t like bobbers, but it’s pretty effective,’’ said Shimek. “And you get away from the boats and noise.’’

Plenty of options Those looking to get away from Green Lake and all of the hubbub associated with the opener will have lots of opportunities to catch walleye as well. The county’s shallow lakes that are earliest to warm are traditionally the best to fish for the opener, noted the local anglers. Wakanda and Big Kandiyohi Lakes south of Willmar should be good bets this year. Those willing to venture downstream into very shallow waters by pulling their craft into either Minnetaga or Kasota should do very well also. Or, head north of Willmar to Ringo Lake, always an early-season favorite. Its dark, shallow waters hold lots of walleye. Markfelder recommends dropping a bobber off of any of its many points. The next best option

is to go slow with an electric trolling motor and work the edge of the weeds, he said. Diamond and Elizabeth in the Atwater area are good bets too. Diamond Lake’s Dogfish Bay is sure to hold walleye early in the season, noted Eichelberger. Elizabeth is one of those lakes that always comes to life early, he and Markfelder noted. Don’t overlook Foot and Willmar Lakes. These shallow lakes are usually at their best early, and they hold some nice walleye. A 7-pound plus walleye was pulled from their waters last fall, noted Eichelberger. They recommend getting away from the crowds when possible. For those reasons, it might be worth giving Andrew, Games or Norway a shot this opener, even though these lakes have been fairly quiet in the past year. The walleyes in all of the county’s lakes are sure to be prowling the shallow, shoreline waters after dusk in search of a meal. It’s a great time to troll a small Rapala for them, they pointed out. And if the walleyes prove reluctant no matter what you try, don’t fret. Many a fishing opener has been saved by changing the game plan and going after crappies instead. There’s a good chance they will be in the shallow waters come the opener, and there’s plenty of local lakes where they are found, the anglers agreed.

Green Lake offers much to entice walleye anglers

But it’s a changing and complex lake, and those who know it fare best By Tom Cherveny tcherveny@wctrib.com SPICER – With his arrival for the 2018 fishing opener, Governor Mark Dayton will be joining a very long list of people who have come to Green Lake to seek its walleye. It’s within an easy twohour drive of the metropolitan area, and there are a host of amenities including well-kept boat access sites, area resorts, restaurants and bait and tackle dealers waiting for those who make it their destination, according to Dean Anfinson, who serves thousands of visitors each year as co-manager of Kandiyohi County Park 5 on the lake’s north side. Green Lake’s clear waters and underwater structure make it both a pleasurable lake to fish as well as a frustrating one, he added. It takes its cue from the weather: It’s always changing, so what works one day may not work the next, he pointed out. But with 5,561 acres of water to explore, and areas as deep as 110 feet, anglers always have options. A couple of decades ago, Green Lake was ranked among the upper 75 percentile in terms of the walleye it held per acre. Today it is at the state

median of 50 percent when it comes to walleye. “It’s changing from primarily a walleye lake to a a really good, mixed species lake,’’ said Dave Coahran, fisheries supervisor for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in Spicer. Back in the day, 95 percent of the fishing pressure on the lake was focused on walleye. Today, it’s 50/50, said Coahran. One-half of the anglers target walleyes and the other half are after the lake’s other game species, including sunfish, crappies, largemouth and small bass, and some northern pike. The changes in Green Lake are attributed to a variety of factors, from a changing climate to the arrival of zebra mussels. The water has warmed and it is much clearer. The water clarity was increasing before the arrival of the invasive mussels, but that has only served to speed the trend, he noted. Coahran said creel studies of the lake show that dedicated walleye anglers who know the lake and their prey are still doing well on Green Lake. They’re enjoying similar catch rates to those recorded before the changes began.

Tribune file photos

The clear, deep waters of Green Lake have made it a well-known fishing destination. Today, about one-half of the anglers are targeting walleye while the other half are in pursuit of its other game fish, including sunfish, crappies, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and northern pike. Anglers will find a mix of walleye-year classes, meaning there are modest numbers of walleyes of all sizes to be caught, according to the fisheries supervisor. The Spicer fisheries crew has been stocking Green Lake with fingerlings since 2000 to maintain its role as a walleye fishing destination. Gill net pulls in

recent years have produced an average of under six walleyes per net, as compared to 10 to 15 per net when the walleye fishery was at its prime. Last fall the fisheries crew stocked carryover walleye, 11 to 12 inches in size that survived in area rearing ponds. This summer the crew will be netting the lake to see if the

larger-sized fish survive better than the fingerlings. If so, and the carry-over walleye remain available, Coahran said the crew will continue the practice of stocking these larger walleye. The goal is to bring the gill-net catches to an average of six to seven walleye per net and maintain that level, he explained.
