Skill positions key as Willmar seeks State By Curt Hogg chogg@wctrib.com aking two consecutive section finals appearances is certainly no menial task. Taking that success one step further is even more difficult.

That is exactly what the Willmar Cardinals will be looking to do in the 2017 season after coming up one step short of reaching the state tournament each of the last two years. To get there, the Cardinals will rely on a strong set of returning offensive
playmakers on the outside, an athletic secondary and second-year starting quarterback Donald Jurek. While Willmar lost half of its starters from its 2016 team that went 2-6 in the regular season before catching fire and reaching the Section 8AAAA
championship game, it returns five of its top six receivers in an offense that heavily uses the passing attack. Of course, leading that group is senior wide receiver/cornerback Noah

Slagter, who set the school record for single-season receptions last season and is one of the area’s top playmakers. Jurek will have no shortage of pairs of mitts at his disposal in addition to Slagter, including Nick Prokosch, Jake Evans, Drey Dirksen, Austin Kowalcyzk and Caleb Ditmarson. Prokosch, Dirksen and Slagter are all among some of the key starters in the Cardinals secondary, which also brings back experienced athletes in cornerbacks Ty Roelofs and Jake Evans.

them to specialize rather than play both ways. Jurek is back at quarterback for his senior season after throwing for 18 touchdowns and 2,038 yards in 2016. He will also look to be a viable threat in Willmar’s spread running attack after gaining 555 yards on 132 carries as a junior. Emerging from an inexperience running back group has been sophomore Ethan Roux, with coaches saying he has an early edge on in-game carries despite not having any last season. Behind Jurek, Dirksen had the next-most carries of any returning player with a total of four.
The biggest question marks surrounding Willmar are at both the offensive and defensive lines. Seniors Cameron Murphy and Spencer Enstad are the two returning starters on the offensive line, while junior Andrew Reigstad is the most experienced returner on the defensive side with 15 tackles last season. Look for Reigstad, linebacker Bryce Erickson and defensive end Taylor Tjaden to lead the way in the front seven for the Cardinals. Trial by fire aids young Mustangs By Tom Larson tlarson@wctrib.com uffalo Lake-HectorStewart’s Mustangs football team has a bad news-good news thing going as the 2017 season kicks off: The Mustangs were 1-8 last season and have to replace several starters, but the good news is that plenty of younger BLHS players got playing time last year and contributed. Sophomore quarterback Dylan Maiers started as a freshman last year and the Mustangs’ two top running backs, sophomore Zachary Reuber ( 97-480, 3 TDs) and senior Brock Luthens (102449, 2 TDs) return, although

Luthens will be out for a time after offseason shoulder surgery. The Mustangs do have replace almost all its top pass catchers from 2016 and Maiers may be moved to running back or wide receiver depending on the progress of younger players, said head coach Dan Krause. The Mustangs also have three of their top tacklers back: Bryan Schulte (Sr., TE/ DE), Dylan Edwards (Sr., OL/ LB) and August Bergstrom (So., WR/DB). Mitchell Krumrey (So., FB/ OL/DL/LB) and Logan Nelson (Sr., OL/DL) also are returning after starting in 2016.

Dragons look to bring back fire-powered offense By Jake Schultz jschultz@wctrib.com he Litchfield Dragons will be green in more than one way this season with only six starters from last year’s squad returning. Luckily, those six starters have plenty of experience between the lot of them. Kal Jackman (Sr., 6-1, 208, DE/OT ) is in his third year starting at the offensive and defensive line while Logan Nelson (Jr., 5-9, 178, RB), one of the beneficiaries of his blocking, is also back for his third year as a starter. He ran for more than 1,000 yards last year as a sophomore and recorded 13 touchdowns. Quarterback is a large hole that the Dragons will need to replace after All-Area First Team quarterback Josh Prahl graduated following the 20162017 school year. He threw for 1,548 yards and 17 touchdowns, and he also ran for 585 yards and scored 7 TDs to power the Dragons to more than 30 points per game.

ACGC returns seven starters including three offensive linemen, the entire defensive line and a quarterback-running back tandem in the backfield. Jaren Kaddatz (Sr., 6-2, 185, QB/S) and Jeremy Nelson (Sr., 5-10, 190, RB/LB) contributed 17 touchdowns to the offensive effort last season and should

But the team’s spirits are high as 2017’s opener approaches, based in part on the Braves’ junior varsity posting a 5-3 mark last year. Benson will suit up 23 players on Friday nights, led by returning starters Shane Flower (Sr., 5-10, 200, G), Devin Vergin (Sr. 5-11, 168, DE), Aaron Zosel (Sr., 5-5, 176 RB/LB) and Matt Connolly (Sr., 6-1, 184, WR/LB/ FS). Zosel is the Braves’ returning tackles leader with 17 solo tackles and 51

T-Hawks seeking a bounce-back campaign By Curt Hogg chogg@wctrib.com he first week of practice couldn’t come soon enough for Montevideo this season. The Thunder Hawks are looking to erase the memories from a disappointing 2016 season that saw them go 2-7 and make a first-round exit in the district playoffs. Back are 11 starters for Montevideo from last season in addition to a talented sophomore class that could make an impact. Isaac Hoogeveen will take over at quarterback after Isaac Douglas graduated, bringing athleticism to an offense seeking a solid run-pass

balance. He will have plenty of talent lined up behind him at running back, as Blaine Sederstrom, Hunter Ward, Chase Korte and Chase Pearson will vie for carries in the backfield. One of Montevideo’s top strengths will come up front with multiple returning starters on the offensive and defensive lines. Thomas O’Malley was an AllConference player last season with 55 tackles on the line and could have a big senior season. Other returners include Sam Henriksen, Noah Buseman and Jackson Snell, who will move to tight end for the T-Hawks. Montevideo’s season opens on Sept. 1 when it plays host to Melrose.

Can skill position players carry Jags? By Curt Hogg chogg@wctrib.com returning group of skill position players will play a vital role in Renville County West’s quest to improve on its 4-6 2016 campaign. Without much team size, RCW head coach Ryan Hebrink is hoping to utilize his squad’s speed to win games this season.

Back for their season seasons are the Jaguars top two rushers from a year ago in quarterback Trent Kjersten and fullback Eric Piceno. Kjersten led the team with 451 yards on the ground on 126 carries and Piceno was next with 277 yards on 56 carries. With a pair of returning starters lining up outside at receiver, Kjersten and the Jaguars will look to improve on
their 41.7 completion percentage as a team in 2016. Jamie Castillo and Andy Villarreal both saw playing time for RCW as sophomores and could become an explosive, athletic combo despite not outsizing most defenders. Junior running back/linebacker Tino Salinas is the fifth returning starter for the Jaguars. RCW will have to replace its top
tackler from a season ago in Stephen Countryman, who accumulated 109 tackles and five sacks. Piceno had the next-most tackles for the Jaguars defense with 81 and is slotted to be the team’s top cover man at cornerback. Kjersten and Salinas both recorded 73 tackles, as well, and Villarreal had 54. The Jaguars’ nine-man season opens on Aug. 31 at Russell-Tyler-Ruthton.

Saints to rely on two-way skill players By Tom Larson tlarson@wctrib.com he Kerkhoven-MurdockSunburg football team rebounded from some down years to post five wins in 2016, including a win over state semifinalist Browerville to end the regular season. The Saints have some promising skill players who can make an impact

on both sides of the ball this season. Caleb Collins (Sr., QB/DB) returns for a third year as the Saints’ starter. He accounted for 674 total yards and seven touchdowns. Dylan Rudningen (Jr., RB/LB) was KMS’ second-leading rusher last year (85-421, 2 TDs). Ryan Torkelson (Sr., FB/OLB), the team’s second-leading receiver last year (11-189) moves to fullback and will be counted on often,
said head coach Eric Kauffmann. Line play could make the difference, and the Saints have Josh Peterson (Sr., OL/OLB), Regan Carlson (Jr., OL/ OLB) and Christian Diedrich (So., OL/ DL) back as starters. The Saints’ returners will have possibly an even greater impact on defense. Brandon Rasmussen (Sr., TE/DB) was in on 49 tackles and led the team
with four interceptions, Rudningen had 69 tackles, had two sacks and two interceptions, and Weston Gjerde (Jr., RB/DB) was in on 36 stops and picked off three passes. In all, Collins, Gjerde, Rasmussen, Rudningen, Torkelson, Peterson, Carlson and Diedrich combined for more than 200 solo tackles, 11 sacks and 10 interceptions.

Wolverines’ new pieces need to produce By Curt Hogg chogg@wctrib.com one from MACCRAY’s 2016 nineman Section 2 runner-up is twoway standout Brady Madsen – as well as mostly all of the team’s starters – leaving MACCRAY with four returning starters and a quest to quickly adapt to playing at the varsity level. Under first-year head coach Rick Meyer, the Wolverines are putting the

pieces together in preparation for their second season in nine-man football. One of the most pivotal of those pieces will be junior quarterback Thomas Kirking, who takes over for Madsen after the former signal-caller accumulated nearly 1600 yards of offense last season. Kirking is expected to be a threat both throwing and running the ball for MACCRAY.
His primary target will likely be 6-foot-4 wideout Braden Hoekstra, a strong playmaker on the outside of the field. Jakob Zuidema will handle plenty of the Wolverines’ running back duties in addition to playing linebacker after carrying the ball 18 times in 2016. Joining Zuidema at linebacker is junior Kelby Jaenisch, whose 121
tackles placed him among the state’s leaders in that category. While the Wolverines will be forced to put the pieces together throughout the rest of the roster, you can expect the defense to come together under Meyer, who previously served as MACCRAY’s defensive coordinator for 20 years.

Wildcat offense ready for new turf field By Jake Schultz jschultz@wctrib.com urf fields tend to favor the offense and that certainly favors New London-Spicer as they get ready to start their first season on the new turf at Pederson Field.

The Wildcats said goodbye to a slew of running backs from last year’s squad including All-Area First Team star Jackson Ness who rushed for 1,476 yards in 2016 with an average of 8.0 yards per carry and 16 touchdowns.
Some say a running back is as good as his offensive line and luckily for the Wildcats four of last year’s starters are back to battle in the trenches. Bubba Harlow (Jr., 6-4, 250, OT), Patrick Schimerowski (Jr., 6-1, 245, C), Colton Bendickson (Sr., 6-0, 210, OG) and

second season. Head coach Dan Essler said he expects Adelman to play a larger role in his junior season as the offensive leader. Adelman will have one of his favorite targets back this season, too, in Kelly Bennetts (Jr., 6-2, 165, WR). Bennetts caught just 12 passes last season but turned those catches into 277 yards so the Wildcats expect him to receive more targets in 2017.
Defense appears to be the early weak spot for the Wildcats as they return only one starter from last year but Essler is quick to point out his inexperienced defense still has some potential. “We have very good size on the line and speed in the secondary which will help us,” said Essler, readying for his 18th year as head coach for the Wildcats.

OL/DL) are back as three-year starters. “Peyton is a very instinctive football player,” Smith said. “Clayton has the combination of size and strength.” Three other returning starters join Beck up front on the lines. Jarrod Higgins (Sr., 6-1, 270, OL/ DL) starts with Beck on the offensive

Strong defense could ‘Sting’ foes By Curt Hogg chogg@wctrib.com he month of August has brought with it plenty of optimism within the city limits of Granite Falls as Yellow Medicine East looks to build on a strong bounce-back season in 2016. With September and the regular season now right around the corner,

though, the Sting will be put to the test. YME returns just nine starters, but plenty of defensive talent, from its 6-4 team that saw a five-win improvement from its disappointing 2015 season. At linebacker, the Sting will feature plenty of depth. Nick Lindstrom, Ayden Friese, Ethan Peterson, Bryce
Schmidt and Garrett Nordang are among the viable candidates to see playing time. That is good news for a defense that allowed just 15.3 points per game last season and forced 18 turnovers. Angel Jimenez is expected to be the first-year starter at quarterback for the Sting, which, however, will
likely once again rely heavily on its running attack. Gone are YME’s top two rushers from last season, leaving Friese, Schmidt and Nordang at the top of the depth chart in the backfield. The Sting’s regular season opens up on Aug. 31 against Tracy-MilroyBalaton at home.

Jaguars are mended, ready to go By Tom Larson tlarson@wctrib.com he Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa football team had high hopes for its 2016 season, but all the optimism – and chances for victories – quickly faded due to a rash of injuries and the Jaguars finished 2-7. Now fully mended, BBE has 10 senior and junior starters back, and

another budding senior star ready to go after missing the entire season because of injury. “We have a lot of experience on this team,” said head coach Chris Moschol. “We have great senior leadership on this team.” The Jaguars will line up with seven senior starters, led by Adam Jaeger (5-7, 165, RB/LB), Trevor Kern (5-11,
185, C/LB), Isaiah Gilbert (5-7, 165, RB/LB), Ryan Illies (6-2, 170, QB/ LB), Thomas Kollman (5-11, 215, G/ DT), Seth Roering (6-2, 200, OT/ DT) and Parker Schwinghammer (6-0, 140, WR/CB). The Jaguars’ juniors – Thaniel Cebulla (6-2, 195, FB/FS), Jared Weller (6-2, 185, WR/DE) and Tyler
Bents (5-9, 145, RB/LB) – also bring a wealth of skill to the field. BBE also has a bright spot in senior Kyle Felling (5-10, 165, WR/CB), who missed the entire 2016 season with an injury. “Kyle brings speed and athleticism to the team,” Moscho said. “We are hoping for big things from him.”

‘Complete’ Bulldogs ready to bounce back By Jake Schultz jschultz@wctrib.com aynesville has the phrase “bounce-back” on the mind as the Bulldogs look to rebound from a 4-6 record in their 2016 outing. The Bulldogs should have the talent to do so, too. They bring back 10

starters, including nearly the entire defensive secondary. Despite plenty of strong returners, Paynesville will need to find a way to replace 2016 All-Area First Team running back Gavin Stanger. Max Weidner (Jr., 5-11, 185, QB) is the team’s leading returning rusher
but he’ll be joined in the backfield by Jake Arnold (Sr., 6-0, 185, LB/DE/ FB) and Carter Carlson (Sr., 5-8, 180, S/RB), who missed all of last season with an injury. He will also be a big factor in the defensive secondary. “It will be really fun to see how this team comes together,” Paynesville
head coach Max Meagher said. “This might be the most complete football team that we have fielded in terms of having depth, ability and size on the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, coupled with a tremendous amount of speed on both sides of the ball.”

Matt Gruber (Sr., 6-1, 175, QB/ DB) is back as a two-year starter at quarterback and a three-year starter at cornerback. Ryan Christianson (Sr., 5-10, 195, FB/LB) will start for a third year at both positions and led the team with 709 rushing yards last year. Garrett Jensen (Sr., 6-1, 175, RB/ DE) was the team’s leading tackler in 2016 (49.5) and will join Christianson and Jack Blevins (Jr., 6-2, 190, RB/ LB) in the Lakers’ backfield. Jackson

Johnsrud (Sr., 6-1, 165, WR/DB) was a state qualifier in the high jump and will be an outside target, and Jaeger Jergenson (Sr., 6-3, 205, TE/DE) who has the size and athleticism to excel at both spots. With eight offensive starters and nine defensive starters back, head coach Cory Larson and his staff have the makings of a contender. Quarterback Alex Swenson (Sr., 6-2, 176, QB/DB) is an accomplished thrower, completing 56 percent of his passes for 1,028 yards, 11 touchdowns and just six interceptions last year. Bentley Boike (Jr., 6-3, 201, RB/DE) ran for 912 yards and 10 touchdowns last year, and Colton Husby (Jr., 6-0,

200, RB/LB) ran for 268 yards and six TDs. The Blackjacks will need to replace graduated receiver Eli Weber’s production (44-609, 8 TDs), but Husby averaged 20.1 yards per reception and Joe Anyasike (Sr., 6-0, 168, WR) is a big-play threat on the edge. The Tigers bring back solid players across the front lines but will trot out some untested skill position players. Gage Wevley (Sr., 6-0, 220, DL/OL) and Bain Laine (Sr., 5-11, 190, DL/OL) anchor an offensive line that helped MCA average 321 rushing yards and 34 points per game in 2016. They also plugged up opposing offenses as defensive linemen. Connor Koebernick (Sr., 5-10, 175,

Koebernick ran for 131 yards and caught passes for 93 yards and two scores last year. Owls bent on exceeding successful 2016 season By Tom Larson tlarson@wctrib.com he Hancock football team erased several tough seasons by posting a 5-4 mark in 2016. Despite losing 13 seniors, the Owls enter 2017 optimistic based on an offense that features a three-year starter at quarterback and several threats in the backfield and on the edges. Noah Kannegeisser (Sr., 5-10, 155, WR/DB) missed the first half of last season but still was the Owls’ reception yardage leader (19-320, 5 TDs), averaging 20.5 yards per catch.

Kaleb Koehl (Sr. 5-11, 170, QB/LB) is back for his third year as a starter after throwing for 1,055 yards last season. Tyler Timmerman (So., 5-10, 145, WR/DB) proved an effective offensive weapon as a freshman, rushing for 7.4 yards per carry and scoring two touchdowns, and he’s also an effective pass defender and run stopper. Josh Birr (Sr., 6-1, 200, RB/LB) will be asked to carry a greater load on offense, and he and Koehl are the Owls’ top returning tacklers. intimidating presence in the trenches and impressive speed and strength at the skill positions. To add to all of that, BOLD adds plenty of experience to its repertoire. Riley Weis (Jr., G/DT) and Jack Hanson (Sr., G/LB) will anchor the
offensive line while returners Austin Einerson (Sr., FB/LB), Hayden Tersteeg (Jr., RB/LB) and Gavin Vosika (So., RB/WR/DB) will look to run rampant behind the big boys. Those three alone logged 1,939 rushing yards last season. Jordan Sagedahl (So., QB/S) will be
