hinese New Year

C(Jan. 29) is a time to celebrate fresh beginnings and cherished traditions. Making sesame chicken at home is a delicious way to honor the occasion with a dish that’s both festive and satisfying.

If you don’t celebrate the Lunar New Year, this recipe is still a winner. It’s a fantastic takeout favorite you can easily recreate at home.

Sesame Chicken is a dish that brings the perfect balance of crispy chicken and a glossy, savory-sweet sauce, and when you make it at home, you’re in charge. You decide the ingredients, whether to add veggies or not, and the sodium level. No MSG (unless you want it), and the best part? You’ll have bragging rights when your sesame chicken rivals your favorite restaurant’s version.

Cooking your takeout favorites at home doesn’t just save you money -- it’s a chance to learn, experiment, and create. Plus, the process of cooking can be a celebration in itself, filled with aromas and textures that make it more than just a meal -it’s an experience.

SESAME CHICKEN

2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces

1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt

3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided

2 teaspoons fresh garlic, minced 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced

2 tablespoons sesame seeds 1 green onion, thinly sliced Cooked rice, for serving Optional vegetables: steamed broccoli, red pepper, celery, onion

Whisk the water, brown sugar, soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil and 2 teaspoons of the cornstarch together in a small bowl; set aside. Slice the chicken into bite-size pieces. This is the most time-consuming part of this whole recipe. Place the chicken in a medium bowl and season with salt. Sprinkle the remaining 1/3 cup cornstarch over the chicken and toss with your hands until the pieces are separated and evenly coated. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large nonstick or cast-iron frying pan over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add half the chicken and spread into an even layer. Cook without stirring until golden brown on the bottom, about 4 minutes. Turn the pieces and cook until the chicken is browned on the second side and cooked through, about 4 minutes more. Transfer to a platter and keep warm. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon oil to the pan and repeat cooking the remaining chicken.

Optional -- Saute the Vegetables: If you’d like to saute the vegetables

instead of steaming them, add them to the skillet now. Cook to your desired doneness, then proceed with the recipe as written. No specific quantities are suggested, as the choice and amount depend on your household’s preferences. Adding extra veggies is also a great way to stretch the meal and feed more people without greatly increasing costs. Return all the chicken to the pan, add the garlic and ginger, and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds.

Give the sauce another whisk, then pour the sauce into the pan. Cook, tossing constantly, until the sauce thickens, is glossy and coats the chicken, about 30 seconds. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and toss to coat. Garnish with green onion and serve over rice if desired. With this simple, frugal and fabulous recipe, you can bring the joy of sesame chicken to your table -- no takeout menu required. Here’s to celebrating deliciously and affordably!

spatula, until the meat and onions are nicely browned, 2 to 3 minutes more. Remove from the heat. Place the Cheez Whiz in a microwavesafe bowl. Microwave on 50% power until pourable, 1 to 2 minutes, stirring every 15 seconds. Remove the rolls from the packaging in one piece. Using a serrated knife, cut crosswise through all of the rolls at once to divide the top half from the bottom (keeping the sides of the rolls intact). Place the bottom half cut-side up on a sheet tray. Scoop the meat and onion mixture into an even layer over the rolls. Stir the Cheez Whiz and spoon it evenly over the meat. Place the top bun cut-side down over the cheese. In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic salt. Brush the slider buns with the butter mixture. Bake until the tops of the rolls are golden and toasted, 10 to 12 minutes. Pull the sliders apart and serve warm, with pickled peppers, if you like.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the black-eyed peas, black beans, tomato, bell pepper, red onion, jalapeño, cilantro, olive oil, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, cumin, and black pepper. Mix well to combine. Serve with tortilla chips.

Crispy, saucy sesame chicken that’s budget-friendly and totally irresistible.

KOVELS ANTIQUES AND COLLECTING

King of Enamels encouraged others to pursue enameling

He’s not an official symbol of Valentine’s Day, but it seems like the right time to have the King of Hearts make an appearance. This King of Hearts enamel was made in 1946 by Kenneth Bates, who may as well be called the king of enamels. Bates was born in Massachusetts in 1904 and developed a love of art and crafts as a child. He attended the Massachusetts School of Art where he studied painting and had his first exposure to enamels. In 1927, while teaching design at the Cleveland School of Art, he realized that there were already many artists working in his preferred medium, watercolor and decided to try something different so his work would stand out. His choice? Enamels. At the time, enamel was limited to expensive jewelry houses; it wasn’t considered a material for modern art.

Q: Is Mark Wahlberg really bald in his new movie “Flight Risk,” or is he wearing a bald cap? He looks like George Costanza from “Seinfeld.” -- N.W.

A: That’s no bald cap or special effects. Mark Walhberg really did shave off the top of his hair for his latest movie role as a pilot who transports a prisoner (Topher Grace) cross-country to testify against a mafia group. It was Walhberg’s idea to fully commit to the role with daily shavings and leaving “the horseshoe around the sides.”

Walhberg told People magazine that the best part about his temporary look was seeing his wife’s face the first time he took off his hat. The movie, which was directed by Mel Gibson and also stars Michelle Dockery (“Downton Abbey”), was originally set for release in 2024 but got moved back to Jan. 24.

Q: I saw an ad for a new show that looks really good. It’s about prisoners breaking free, but I can’t recall the name of it. When does it come out?

-- B.F.

A: You’re thinking of the upcoming NBC drama “The Hunting Party,” which premiered on Jan. 19. The premise follows a group of prisoners who escape after their underground top-secret prison (known as The Pit) blows up. The hunters in this case are a small team of investigators assembled to “capture the most dangerous killers our country has ever seen.”

The search team includes a former FBI profiler played by Melissa Roxburgh (“Manifest”), a prison guard played by Josh McKenzie (“La Brea”), and a CIA agent played by Patrick Sabongui (“The Flash”). Among the deadly escapees are a serial killer played by

Bates’s work, from Arts and Crafts-style boxes and bowls to abstracted nature imagery to human figures, changed that. He also encouraged hobbyists to pursue enameling, writing books like “Enameling: Principles and Practice,” published in 1951, to make the craft more accessible. His King of Hearts piece sold for $1,188 at an auction by Rago Arts.

Tobias Jelinek (“Stranger Things”), who Roxburgh’s character initially helped put away for his crimes. JJ Bailey, one of the show’s creators, explains that there’s enough plot besides escaped prisoners to engage viewers for several seasons. He claims that by the end of the season, it “turns out there’s much more going on.”

He further explains, “We talk a lot about what was going on at the Pit as being sort of ... this octopus with many tentacles. In the end of season 1, we sort of chop one off only to realize there’s more, and there definitely is someone behind the explosion at the Pit with an ulterior motive that we’ll uncover hopefully seasons ... down the road.”

HOLLYWOOD -- All eyes are on the Blake Lively/Justin Baldoni lawsuits! Lively accused Baldoni of sexual harassment on the set of “It Ends with Us,” then accused him of mounting a smear campaign to tarnish her reputation. He filed a $250 million suit against the New York Times for running Lively’s complaint against him. He also accuses her of a smear campaign. The “he said, she said” campaign drove the $25 million film to a $351 million gross in the box office.

Lively and husband Ryan Reynolds skipped the Golden Globes because they were unhappy that neither of them were nominated. She has since moved on to the sequel to her 2018 blackcomedy/crime film “A Simple Favor,” which is being directed by Paul Feig for Amazon MGM Studios. It co-stars Anna Kendrick, Henry Golding, Andrew Rannells and Allison Janney.

Meanwhile, Reynolds recently wrapped the live-action animated comedy “Animal Friends” in April 2024, as well as the action-adventure film “Mayday” with Kenneth Branagh and Maria Bakalova, which wrapped in May 2024. How will this infighting affect their future images?

A: It sounds like you saw a sacristy cabinet. Sacristy cabinets store important items like clergy’s robes, vessels, objects used in services and parish records. There isn’t a single standard design; they can be long and low like a credenza or a small cupboard or chest of drawers. They usually have elaborate decorations, like carvings, marquetry, or gilding, that reflect the architectural style of the time and place they were made. For example, an Italian Renaissance (c. 1500) sacristy cabinet may have geometric inlay. A 19thcentury Gothic Revival cabinet can look like a miniature cathedral itself. Neoclassical cabinets from the late 18th to early 19th century can have simpler geometric shapes. There are French Provincial cabinets with delicate scrolls and curved panels. Like most church furnishings, they are beautifully crafted and are considered works of art.
