Aging Care Connections needs your help

Dear Community Member, We need your help! During Aging Care Connections’ Aging Well Month in May (Older Americans Month) we are honoring and celebrating the volunteer efforts of older adults who generously give their time to make their communities great places to age well. The honorees are recognized as Community GEMs—older adults Going the Extra Mile through volunteer work to better their community. For Aging Well Month, community partners across the area offer fun, free, and informative seminars, activities, and events with the goal of helping older adults to age well in our communities.

Recognition of Community GEMs is part of the Aging Well Month celebration and is organized by a committee of community volunteers. Aging Well Month begins with a kick-off luncheon on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at the La Grange Country Club where we recognize and celebrate the Community GEMs. Are you friends/neighbors/co-workers with a GEM? If so, please let us know! What is a GEM? A person from Lyons, Riverside or Proviso Townships, who is 60 + and has, or is currently, volunteering and making a difference in the lives of others. Please complete and submit the attached form.

You can mail or email the form and digital headshot of your honoree to the Aging Well Month Committee. We will then contact each of the GEMs to ask them the following brief interview questions: 1. What are words you live by that our community should know? 2. Why is our community a great place to age? 3. The age of the Honoree, if not included on the form A recent digital photo should also be included with the Community GEM form. If the Honoree does not have a current digital picture, we are happy

to make arrangements to have a photo taken. Please take some time to think of someone who would be a perfect fit for this honor. If you have any questions about Aging Well Month or the Community GEMs, please contact Jan Walch at 708-603-2245, c o m m u n i t y g e m s @ agingcareconnections.org Completed forms and digital photos must be submitted by Friday, March 1, 2019. Thank you for your help! Best regards, The Aging Well Month Planning Committee

A Message from the Police Chief – Steven Stelter A Message from the Police Chief – Steven Stelter Well, spring is right around the corner and if you are like me the warm weather cannot get here soon enough. I want to share with you some technology resource tips for parents. More than ever before, today’s children need their parents to help them acquire the skills to use time wisely. Technology has opened many doors to vast amounts of information, social networks around the world and new career development opportunities, all at the touch of a finger. Parents, by being technology savvy, can help children be selective in using technology for learning as well as for entertainment purposes by modeling lifelong learning skills and monitoring their children’s use of software and the web. Here are two helpful websites for parents: visit the Parent Tech Guide website to learn more about parenting in the digital age, www.parenttechguide. com. Also, the National Parent Teacher Association has initiatives in educational technology to help parents stay involved in their schools technology activities, www.pta.org. ______________________________________ _______________________________________ The Westchester Police Department realizes the importance of partnering with the citizens to insure we can provide the best services possible. The men and women are extremely dedicated to protecting those within our community. The Cook County Sheriff ’s Department has provided a drug take back box in the lobby of the Village Hall for all individuals that have the need to dispose of medications that are expired or are left

behind from a loved one. The Sheriff will maintain the box and dispose of the medications legally with no responsibility to the Village. I want to thank the Sheriff for this program. If you have old medications or medications from a lost loved one, come on down to the Village Hall and deposit them in the drug box located in the front lobby. ______________________________________ _______________________________________ The Westchester Police Department realizes the importance of partnering with the citizens to insure we can provide the best services possible. The men and women are extremely dedicated to protecting those within our community. We firmly stand by the Department’s Mission Statement which reads: “It is the mission of the Westchester Police Department to protect lives and property of the people we serve, to reduce the occurrence of crime and to continually provide professional public safety service while partnering with the community to improve the quality of life.” “Our goal is to do so with honor, integrity and accountability while conducting ourselves with the highest ethical standards to maintain public confidence and trust in our police department.” ______________________________________ ______________________________________ Identity Theft & Tax Time Identity Theft occurs when someone uses your personal information such as your social security

number or any other identifying information without your permission. Fraudulent tax returns continue to be a problem, so it is important to take charge before you become a victim. The first thing you should do is file your return as quickly as possible. Waiting until the last minute increases the chances of your information being compromised. Check into filing immediately and making an amended return when your final figures are available. That is one way the IRS will have information on file that a return for 2017 has been filed. Check with your accountant or IRS agent to assure you file properly. Also be certain to request your FREE credit report, everyone gets one FREE report a year. Call the FTC at 1-877-322-8228. ______________________________________ _______________________________________ Parking Regulations – Snow Removal I would like to remind everyone that after a snowfall of 2 inches or more to be mindful of the parking restrictions the Village has in place. It is imperative everyone follows these laws in order for our public works snow plows to clear the streets as best as they can. It is also important to know the difference between a “snow emergency route” and “alternate side of the street parking.” Both of these are spelled out plain and clear on the Village website within the municipal code section. The section numbers are as follows: Snow Emergency Route – 11.30.020 Times / Alternate Side of the Street – 11.32.160

Community Development notes

With spring around the corner, the Village wants to remind residents to be prepared for severe weather. To prepare for severe weather you should do the following: The following are things you can do to protect yourself, your family and your property before severe weather: • Build an Emergency Supply Kit, which includes items like non-perishable food, water, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, extra flashlights and batteries. You may want to prepare a portable kit and keep it in your car in case you are told to evacuate. This kit should also include a pair of goggles and disposable breathing masks for each member of the family. • Make a Family Emergency Plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency. • Continually monitor the media – Be aware of storm’s which could impact your area. • Know how you will be warned in an emergency (NOAA Weather radios with a tone alert are a good option). • Know if you live or work in a flood prone area. Check with your local emergency management for details. story from page 8

• Know where to shelter (ie: basement, interior room/hall, bathroom, closet, etc) if conditions warrant and where shelters in your area are located. • Ensure your home is ready – Elevate items in the basement which could be flooded. Bring in outdoors items such as children’s toys, patio furniture, garbage cans, etc which could be blown around and damaged. Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage. • Know how to shut off utilities, including power, water and gas, to your home. Have proper tools (i.e.: wrench) ready and nearby. • Find out what types of events and kinds of damages are covered by your insurance policy. Keep insurance policies, important documents and other valuables in a safe and secure location. • Keep fire extinguishers on hand and make sure everyone knows how to use them. Information above was prepared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Did you know all detached garages adjacent to alleys must have address numbers on them. This will help the Police and Fire Departments respond to events such as garage break-ins, in progress crimes and medical/fire emergencies. The goal is to easily identify the correct location instead of counting houses from the corner, or identifying where a problem exists that needs to be addressed. Garages shall have address numbers placed in a position to be plainly legible and visible from the alley fronting the property. These numbers shall: • Contrast with their background • Be Arabic numerals or alphabet letters. • Be a minimum of 4 inches in height with a minimum stroke width of 0.5 inch. Junk Vehicles Did you know that all junk motor vehicles are required to be garaged when in a residential district. “Junk vehicle” means any vehicle which is in a wrecked, dismantled, partly dismantled, burned or inoperative condition. A junk vehicle is also a motor vehicle from which, for a period of at least seven days, the engine, wheels, or other parts

have been removed, or on which the engine, wheels or other parts have been altered, damaged or otherwise so treated that the vehicle is incapable of being driven under its own motor power. If you see any junk vehicles, please give Community Development a call at 708345-0199. Garbage Can Locations & Hours The Village has requirements for the location and hours for garbage cans. We have begun placing courtesy notices and issuing citations for violations. Please be aware of the following requirements: Location: If you are adjacent to an alley: Garbage can shall be located immediately adjacent to the rear lot line. If you place your cans at the curb: Garbage can shall be placed at the curb line for the purpose of having its contents removed, it shall be adjacent to the curb. Hours: Waste containers shall be placed at the curb no earlier than 3:00 p.m. on the day preceding the day of collection and removed from the curb line as soon as possible after collection, but no later than 7:00 a.m. on the day after collection.

PW Holiday Tournament Leaders Receive Recognition The 58th Annual Proviso West Holiday Basketball Tournament was successful once again this year. Over sixteen of the most competitive high school basketball teams played at a very high level during this four-day event. The tradition continues, and community members proudly relish the opportunity to spend a portion of their holiday season enjoying this outstanding basketball event. Although Bogan High School took home the 1st place trophy this year, a number of the participating schools solidified their status and competitors for the state championship in their respective classes. Superintendent Jesse. J. Rodriguez and the Board of Education recognized Proviso West Assistant Principal for Athletics and Activities, Mr. Calvin Davis, Proviso West Athletic Department Secretary, Ms. Joann Washington, and Superintendent’s Office Secretary, Ms. Michelle Edwards for their commitment to the continuous success of one of the best holiday tournaments in the Chicagoland area. PTHS D209 thanks the faculty and staff who continue the rich tradition of the holiday tournament and the athletes who always display excellence on the court. We look forward to our supportive fans coming back next year. College & Career Academies Prepare Students for Postsecondary Pathways The College & Career Academies of Proviso East and West High Schools were designed to prepare students to be successful in our globally competitive society. This rigorous program enables students to have college preparatory curricula with enhanced opportunities to gain experience in areas of interest, for deep exploration of postsecondary opportunities, and the support of community and industry partners. This model embraces innovation, team work, college readiness, and realworld experiences with local businesses and professionals. There are three Academies at each school that were driven by student

interest and workforce projections. “The 21st Century market is very competitive, and we need to prepare our students so they are able to compete,” said Ms. Antoinette Rayburn, Manager of Career Readiness and Student Programs for District 209. “Through this focus on vocational training and making these benchmarks, our students will be ready.” PTHS D209 will continue to develop the Academies and their pathways to ensure they meet the needs of its students. As such, there are plans to provide students access to pathways in both building/construction and welding beginning in the 2020-2021 school year. Our Academies endeavor to ensure students have opportunities to explore rich career experiences while in high school including hands-on training, apprenticeships, and internships in a variety of programs of study. The ultimate goal to provide all Proviso students with the tools and preparation necessary to find success pursuing any of the numerous opportunities that await them beyond graduation. D209 Celebrates Grand Opening of Newly Renovated Proviso West Field House On January 15, 2019 community leaders, students, coaches, and staff gathered for the Ribbon Cutting of the newly renovated Proviso West Field House which is the first project completed under the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 (PTHS D209) Facility Master Plan. During the last 18 months the Board of Education and District leaders worked diligently to produce a comprehensive Facility Master Plan with funding options that ensure safe, secure, and conducive teaching and learning facilities over the next ten years. Although the capital projects are phased over a ten-year period, this week the school community had the opportunity to see one of the projects that is part of the vision for athletic facilities come to life. “Year after year our track teams have not

only met but exceeded their goals which includes once again competing at the State and National levels. Our students do their part by studying, training, and giving us their best every day, and my mission is to do my part by implementing a fiscally responsible plan that ensures our student-athletes have the equipment and facilities they need to take their achievements to the next level,” said PTHS D209 Superintendent Dr. Jesse J. Rodriguez. “We are so excited about the Field House revocations because our students can see with their own eyes the investment our district is making to redefine the Proviso experience. And I am absolutely thrilled that our 4 x 400 State Champions now have a track they can brag about!” said Proviso West Principal, Dr. Nia Abdullah. The Field House renovations included a complete replacement of the track, painting of the walls, ceiling, railings, trim and deck, door replacements, and installment of wall graphics with new school logos. The new track will allow the PTHS D209 track and field teams to raise the level of competitiveness, enhance scholarship opportunities, and take full advantage of one of the few high school field houses in the Midwest that can seat over 700 spectators. PTHS D209 coaches are very excited about the positive changes that are taking

place at the district. Proviso East Track and Field Assistant Coach, Mr. Steve Lawrence spoke on behalf of PTHS D209 coaches by stating, “I’ve been involved in Proviso over 40 years and the opportunity to have this completed in less than five months shows tremendous leadership and passion for our students. Our students not only have equal facilities as everyone else in our conference, but we actually have a state-ofthe-art facility at Proviso. We are honored and grateful for this.” Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Athletics, and Safety, Dr. Tony Brazouski, further explained how the Facility Master Plan supports the vision of athletics at Proviso. He proudly referenced the new words of inspiration placed on the Field House walls that read “No Fear” and “No Excuses” and reminded the audience that we should continue to create equitable opportunities for our students with no fear and no excuses. Dr. Brazouski further stated, “PTHS D209 is committed to equity, excellence and empowerment with equity being number one. Through equitable access students are empowered to set goals, strive to achieve those goals and through grit, determinization, and vision are able to come out on top; this is the vision for our athletic programs at Proviso.”
