ABOUT “ALWAYS…PATSY CLINE” Ted Swindley, the founding artistic director of Stages Repertory Theatre in Houston, Texas, had been involved with the development of new plays and musicals throughout his distinguished career. In 1988, he was considering ideas for a small musical when a young singer in his company of actors voiced the desire to sing the Patsy Cline repertoire. Mr. Swindley was not a country music fan, but as he began researching the idea for a musical about the legendary country singer, became an instant devotee of Patsy Cline’s wonderful catalogue of songs and the magnificent sound of her magical voice. In reading a biography about Patsy Cline, Mr. Swindley discovered an interview with Houston housewife, Louise Seger. The interview recounted the tale of Louise’s fateful meeting with Cline at a Houston honky tonk, and included a letter that Patsy wrote to Louise. The warmth and humanity of Patsy’s letter gave him the idea of an interesting way into the singer’s life, music, and her effect on her fans. The story of their ensuing pen-pal relationship became a 45-minute cabaret piece, and was an instant audience pleaser. Several years later in l990, Swindley re-approached the script for a theatre in South Carolina and converted it into its full-length version. Little did he know that Patsy’s fan base was so deep and broad-based, nor that the simple story of a fan’s chance meeting would have such universal appeal. It captured not only the spirit of Patsy Cline’s brilliance, but the magic of something truly Americana, part of the soul of country music... the music of the common people. After a performance of the play in Atlanta which was viewed by executives of the Grand Ole Opry from Nashville, Always...Patsy Cline was invited to play at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, the very stage where Patsy herself had performed throughout her brief career. The musical had
a very successful run Off-Broadway in l997 and has continued to be one of the most popular and often produced shows throughout America and has enjoyed international success in Australia, the UK, and Ireland. Virginia Patterson Hensley (Patsy Cline) born on September 8, 1932 in Winchester, Virginia, worked waitressing jobs as a teen, while singing at local clubs and on the radio. She landed her first recording contract in 1954, when she was 22, and became something of a star after singing “Walkin’ After Midnight” on the Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts TV show three years later. Cline became a pioneer for women in the music industry. She demanded payment up front and was country’s first crossover artist. She became one of the most influential, successful and acclaimed vocalists of the 20th century. She died at the age of 30, along with Opry Stars Cowboy Copus & Hawkshaw Hawkins in a crash in the private plane of her manager, Randy Hughes. Millions of her records have sold since her death. One of the greatest honors she would ever receive was her induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. She was the first female solo artist inducted into this elite group of stars. The album “Patsy Cline’s Greatest Hits” has sold over TEN MILLION copies and is listed in the 2005 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records. Patsy holds the honor of “most weeks on the US charts for an album by a female artist of any genre in history” and also has the distinction of having the #1 Jukebox Hit of all time for “Crazy.” She earned a special Grammy Award for “Lifetime Achievement.” She has a street named after her on the Universal Studios lot in California and even has her very own star on the world famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. – PIA HAAS

who’s who BOB FUNKING AND BILL STUTLER (Owners / Executive Producers) On July 9, 2016, the Westchester Broadway Theatre will celebrate its 42 nd Anniversary, as well as the 26th Anniversary in this specifically designed, state of the art theatre. Bill and Bob, 2004 inductees into the “Westchester County Business Hall of Fame,” pioneered the Dinner Theatre concept in Westchester when they opened An Evening Dinner Theatre on July 9, 1974. Having designed and built An Evening from the ground up as a theatre that serves dinner and lunch, they established their operation as a cultural mainstay in the tri-state area. The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the only year round theatre in Westchester where Broadway performers, directors and designers gather to create the best in Musical Theatre. (They have produced more shows than most Broadway producers. Always... Patsy Cline is our 194th Mainstage Production.) The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the longest running, 52 week a year Equity theatre in the State of New York. Each show is produced exclusively for the theatre and each is approached in the same manner as Broadway Productions: casting Broadway performers at auditions in New York City, and hiring the creative staff (Directors, Choreographers, Musical Directors, Set, Costume and Lighting Designers). On the dark nights of the musicals, Bill and Bob have presented over 900 Monday and Tuesday night specials and, in 1997, inaugurated the Gold Star Series of Concerts presenting Jackie Mason to a sold-out house. Other great performers in the Gold Star series have been Tom Jones, George Carlin, Paul Anka, Wayne Newton, and Harry Belafonte. With the continued support of the people of the tri-state area, we pledge to continue to present the best in theatre and dining. th
