We’ve curated a vibrant genre-spanning program of established masters and emerging artists; education programs that mentor the next generation of musical stars; and multicultural, sensory-friendly family events that invite everyone to enjoy the music. THE HOME EXPERT

2022 Design Trends

BY STEVEN GEIGER AND ROSEMARY STERN

With so much time spent in our homes over the past two years, it wouldn’t be surprising if you’ve already reimagined some spaces. Perhaps you’ve created a more formal office setup, reading nook or simply rearranged your furniture: anything to make your home more comfortable and functional.

For those of you who haven’t yet fallen back in love with your homes and are willing to allocate some of that unused travel budget to make changes, here are some design trends to consider: WHITE WALLS Say goodbye to beiges, grays and blues. White and o-•-white walls are back – yes, they are! White makes a room feel larger, and your artwork and other wall hangings will cream paints, be sure to paint a large color pop. White can be used in any style or age swatch on a key wall before proceeding. Use home: from a 2015 contemporary to a 1930s color – including trendy black – for door and Tudor. With so many iterations of white and window trim, or an accent wall.

Overwhelmed by the thought of downsizing? FIRST STOP: Choose the top team for your next move.

OUTDOOR LIVING This year is still about making the most of your outdoor space. One way to do that is to mimic your indoor space by using rugs, lighting, couches, and side tables – all under a covered patio. Embrace the outdoors as your cooking, dining and entertaining area. An outdoor heater with wheels will keep the space functional on cooler days and evenings. MULTI-USE SPACE Create a multi-purpose space by converting that “smallish” guest room into a more functional space. Replace the bed with a Murphy bed that folds up against the wall and frees up floor space.Add casters to your desk, chair and other furniture so they can be easily moved - allowing you to use the room for yoga or another fit ness workout. Place your desk, computer and printer along the wall and add curtains to conceal them when not in use.

These design trends can add function and serenity to your home. And who couldn’tusealittlemoreofthoseth Bringing Buyers and Sellers together successfully for nearly 40 years. Steve Geiger 914.263.5275 steven.geiger@raveis.com stevengeiger.raveis.com ONE PALMER AVE

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

A Pain in the Neck (and Back) BY DR. ANDREW CASDEN

• Discectomy, where a herniated or “slipped” disc is partially or completely removed. • Laminectomy, where the surgeon eases pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots by removing part or all of the vertebral bone (lamina). • Spinal fusion. The most common involves fusing the vertebrae together to stop the problematic motion.

The number of Americans suffering from neck and/or back pain is truly staggering. According to the National Health Institute (NHI) at Georgetown University, nearly 65 million people report a recent episode of back pain, with 16 million adults experiencing persistent or chronic back pain.

In addition, as many as 70% of adults will experience a degree of neck pain that prevents them from engaging in their daily activities during their lifetime.

MY ADVICE In addition to the mentioned preventive measures, staying well-hydrated is also important, as is trying to maintain a supportive posture. The latter can be a challenge as we age, and bad postural habits formed earlier in life – from bending over a desk, piece of machinery, or nowadays our phones – certainly will not have helped. But making a concerted effort to walk as erectly (yet comfortably) as possible can have a number ofpositivee-•ects.

As might be expected, the average occurrence of such conditions increases with age; the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), part of the CDC, reports the percentage of adults with back pain rises from nearly 28% for those ages 18 to 29 and 35% for those ages 30 to 44 to nearly 44% for those 45 to 64 and 46% for those 65 and older. Back pain is a natural part of the aging process. As we get older, the standard wear and tear on our spines can result in the discs between our vertebrae drying out and shrinking. In turn, that can lead to osteoarthritis in the spine, which can cause even greater pain – including pinched nerves in the back and legs, leading to sciatica. But not all pains are alike. Sleeping in an awkward position or lifting something unusually heavy can result in back and neck pain. Sometimes, pain can occur for no reason at all.

• Engaging in low-impact exercise like walking, sessions on an elliptical machine or exercise bike or, best of all, swimming. MORE SERIOUS PAIN If, however, the pain continues to linger after a few weeks, it is probably time to see a physician. As is the case with most conditions, not all back- and neck-pain patients will require the same type of care. Unless the pain has become truly unbearable and is preventing you from enjoying your usual routines, physical therapy or a tailored exercise program often can be the solution.

Common solutions are: Applying • heattothea-•ectedarea. Taking • ananti-inflammatorymedication Ultimately, however, surgery may be (as long as the individual is not already necessary. Three of the most typical taking a blood thinner). back surgeries are: spring 2022

15

And if these measures prove to be insu-cient, by all means visit a - physi cian or orthopedic specialist to discuss a comprehensive treatment plan. There is no reason to put up with such a debilitating condition when there are so many options available. n n n

Dr. Andrew Casden is Chief of Orthopedic Surgery and Spine Surgery at White Plains Hospital. He is experienced in both traditional and minimally-invasive spinal surgery. His comprehensive approach to spinal conditions considers each patient’s lifestyle and expectations, and focuses on offering the most appropriate, personalized treatment plan for each patient. The Power of Acupuncture BY RUBINA HEPTULLA, MD, MBA

training and experience. Some insurances require physician acupuncturists to supervise the sessions.

Acupuncture is an over 5,000-year-old Eastern medicine practice that originated in China. It has also been long-used in Japan and Korea, with each of these societies employing their own unique method to help patients recover from disease and/or alleviate disabilities.

Honey: How Sweet It Is! BY DARYL MOSS

As already mentioned, raw honey is an antioxidant, antibacterial and helpful for healing wounds. Honey is also antifungal, meaning that honey has all sorts of medicinal properties, used both internally and topically.

A roughly 8,000-year-old cave painting in Spain shows a person climbing a ladder to collect honey from a hive, illustrating that humans have been using this sweet treat since ancient times. Egyptian hieroglyphs even show both honey and beekeepers. Hives and honey had many uses: from culinary to healing to monetary.

Manuka honey, used topically, has been shown to be especially e-•ectiveforwounds, - ro sacea, acne, chapped lips, skin irritations, and dry skin care. Real Manuka honey comes from the bees that pollinate the Manuka bush, which grows primarily in New Zealand. New Zealand is on the other side of the world so, naturally, Manuka honey is much more expensive than local honey. Unfortunately, some of the products are also adulterated. The best way to tell if it is real is to check the label for a UMF rating.

Fast forward to the present. Although honey is no longer used as currency, it is a wonderful sweetener, and its healing properties are no longer an old wives’ tale. Growing Hydrangeas BY ROSEMARY BLACK

With their splashy bright colors and big, puffy blooms, hydrangeas are one of summer’s signature flowers. They are also a low-stress choice for home gardeners looking to embellish their garden next spring. Since they bloom right into the fall, they are an excellent option if you want to hang on to a little bit of summer.

“We sell a lot of hydrangeas,” says Nancy DeCrenza, who owns Pinesbridge Nursery in Ossining with her husband Bobby. There are so many varieties and heights to consider. If you choose the tree form, don’t plant them in an area where they will block your windows as they grow, advises Nancy.

chester County, in Elmsford. “Florist hydrangeas may not be hardy, so check with the nursery,” she cautions. “Hydrangea arborescens (wild hydrangea) and H. quercifolia (oakleaf hydrangea) are among the many varieties that are available and the color is really a matter of personal choice,” she says. In terms of hardiness, Eric explains, “Hardiness in horticultural speak means winter survivability: when a plant can survive at an average winter temperature of 10 degrees. Hydrangeas will survive a winter, and they also tend to have a long bloom window.”

avoid watering in the afternoon or evening and on cloudy or windy days.” HOW TO TAKE CUTTINGS Take a cutting from a branch of the hydrangea shrub that is five or six inches long, recommends Amy. Many experts agree the cutting will work best if taken from a branch that did not flower during the past year. Remove the lower leaves of the bottom two leaf nodes (the node is where the leaf comes out of the branch), Next, cut the largest leaves down so they are about half their size. Dip the cuttings into rooting hormone (an optional step) and insert them into damp vermiculite. Water the cuttings and let them drain. The soil should be moist but not soggy. Next, cover the cuttings and pot with plastic, making sure to keep the plastic away from the leaves to improve air circulation in the humid chamber. To help with this, you can add stakes.

LAUNCH1000 Entrepreneurs BY DONNA MORIARTY

spring 2022

Out of the hardships of the pandemic, bursts of entrepreneurial passion emerge... In the summer of 2020, as the world was defending itself from the sucker punch delivered by COVID-19 and just coming to grips with its implications, a team from the Westchester County Office of Economic Development, led by Deborah Novick, Director of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, sat down to develop a program to offset the encroaching unemployment catastrophe. “We knew thousands of people were going to lose their jobs and would face hard choices,” says Novick.

The result of that sit-down was Launch1000, an online program to guide and support up to a thousand Westchester residents in launching a home-based income stream or new business. The program, which included access to business knowledge, mentorship, resources and grants, guaranteed participants a shot at turning their idea into a viable business within six months. In the fall of 2020, the OED began accepting applications from any county resident over the age of 18 willing to commit the time and effort to completing the virtual selfstudy program. “We had participation from every age group from 20 to 77, and education levels from sixth grade to Ph.D.,” says Novick. If participants lacked a computer or internet connection, one was provided. They didn’t even need a fully formed idea, just the motivation to go after their dream. 

their personal stories to create empathy in the workplace. “These days,” says Pagnotta, “empathy is sorely missing.” Pagnotta joined the first Launch1000 cohort and began developing her business idea. Peer feedback and coaching helped her zero in on the market for an app that could foster workplace cooperation as well as the features that would o-•er the most value. Within a few months, she had secured a beta [test] partner and an app developer. By June, she had a functional prototype and a name: ULUStory. Pagnotta proudly shares the product’s catch phrase: “Your stories, your voice.” “What sets ULUStory apart from other D&I [diversity and inclusion] and engagement tools is that we have powerful, demonstrable evidence that it works. Plus, it’s fun, creative and focuses on commonalities, not di-•erences,” says Pagnotta. She is heartened by the range of individuals and organizations expressing interest, including two colleges and the county government. “We’re looking for early adopters to introduce the tool in a meaningful way. We’ll be tracking results to learn how it’s helping to resolve conflict, reduce lawsuits, and improve employee retention. That’s the needle really moving.” 

On a visit to the Thimble Islands, Anne Wilson watched as two women sat at a table shaded from thesun, theirhandsflyingasthey crafted jewelry. Captivated by the vivid colors and sparkling beads, Wilson made a promise to herself. “I said, I’m going to learn how to do that. And I did.”

Deborah Pagnotta has worked at many trades: employment lawyer, college professor, workplace trainer, storyteller and more. But in May of 2020, she found herself at a crossroads: about to turn 65 and without a job. After spotting the notice for Launch1000 on her phone, she hit on an idea to combine two of her strengths—story- For years, Wilson crafted jewelry tellingandconflictmanagement— from pearls, Murano glass, crysto create an engagement app to tals, and gemstones that she either help employees craft and share kept or gave away as gifts. specialists and other advisors and has her eye on a club-like property in Westchester that she hopes to open this year. 

As graduates of the inaugural Launch1000 program continue to spread their wings and report on their progress, a participant survey is providing valuable intel for future planning. “In our first year we-en rolled a diverse group in every sense: race, age, education, language spoken at home,” Novick recounts. Seventy percent reported feeling confident they could live on the income from their new enterprise, even though more than 60 percent had never owned a business before. Among those who completed the program, close to $2 million in sales are projected for 2022.

At first intimidated by the “magnificent ideas” others were working on, from sickle cell research to food pantries in food deserts, Wilson soon warmed to the encouragement o-•ered by her peer group. Today, Wilson no longer gives away her talent or her product for free. Woodland Pond has earned the coveted 5-star rating for Medicare and Medicaid Services annually since 2014 and is the nation’s only CCRC to be named a leader in LGBTQ Equality by the Human Rights Campaign since 2018. Why Woodland Pond? Our mission says it best. “Opportunity. Care. Connections.” Three simple words that say so very much about what life at Woodland Pond provides. Woodland Pond builds on a set of simple, fundamental values to ensure that the lives our residents lead are rich and fulfilling—personal engagement; communication and transparency; accountability for our actions and responsibility for our choices; person centered care; a commitment to actively fostering personal growth.

Woodland Pond offers all of this in a safe environment of dignity, honesty, ethical integrity, inclusivity, and respect. And all of this is enlivened by the natural beauty and cultural richness of the Hudson Valley. The residents, staff, family, and friends of Woodland Pond embrace life, and show everyone that crosses their thresholds exactly what it means to be experiencing retirement at its best. westchesterseniorvoice.com

529 Plans

For Your Grandchildren BY LAURA I. ROTTER Students will not be required to report any cash support they receive, including any contributions from 529 plans held by grandparents. In other words, it’s now much more attractive for grandparents to open and contribute to 529 plans, since they will have no impact- on fi nancial aid at schools that use the FAFSA form.

A client of mine recently reached out about whether or not to fund a 529 plan for his granddaughter - and she’s not due to be born for another four months. Talk about getting a head start on college planning!

He’ll have to wait a bit though. You cannot set up a 529 plan for an unborn child since a Social Security number is required for the named beneficiary of the plan. But you certainly can begin contributing once your grandchild arrives.

ASK THE DOC Did I tear my meniscus?

Dr. Steven Andelman, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in adult and pediatric sports medicine, discusses what such tears mean and what can be done to treat – and prevent – them. The meniscus, a C-shaped disc of soft cartilage that sits between the femur and the tibia, acts as a cushion or “shock absorber” in each of your knees. There are over 500,000 meniscal tears in the U.S. every year – but not all of them are alike. There are two kinds of these tears: acute, which tends to occur with younger people during an activity like playing basketball or even getting out of your chair; and degenerative, which can coincide with the wear-and-tear we experience as we get older, starting at about age 40. If untreated, the latter can contribute to arthritis and chronic pain going forward. The assumption that surgery is the only option in meniscal tear cases is often untrue. We treat patients on an individualized basis and the great majority can recover through medications, injections, physical therapy and/or bracing. If surgery is necessary, we have a range of new instruments and procedures that are minimally invasive and done arthroscopically. Whatever the course of treatment, most patients can recover within six to eight weeks. Although sometimes meniscal tears “just happen,” preventive measures can be taken: Stabilizing the knee to maintain a strong core through exercises that strengthen the legs and/or wearing a knee brace, properly warming up before and after exercise, and of course maintaining a healthy exercise and diet regimen.
