Message from the LOUD Board

Photo: Jason Husmillo Art and Design © 2015

Welcome to the 2016/17 LOUD Business Directory 2015 was an exciting year, wasn’t it? It certainly was for LOUD. As you know, LOUD is an acronym for Leadership, Opportunity, Unity and Diversity and LOUD Business is founded on three pillars: Networking, Community & Philanthropy. These principles guide all of our activities and unite our members. They are simple principles, but meaningful ones. This year was exciting because it marked a palpable, renewed dynamism in our association. We expanded the scope of our current activities and created new initiatives for all of our members, facilitating connections between business, social profit organisations and individuals. We nurtured relationships outside the province by joining the Canadian Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, and by attending events and conferences with our friends at the Western Business Alliance which unites LGBTQ+ Chambers down the Pacific coast of the US. Locally, LOUD Lunches and Mini Expos, one of our most popular events, allowed

members, guests and community partners to learn about each other and forge partnerships. LOUD Lounge, our post-work gathering, attracted growing numbers throughout the year and continues to present an opportunity to discover new member venues, to reconnect with old friends and to make new ones. LOUD Breakfast is also back and rounds up our networking offerings nicely for the early birds amongst us. With regular meetings at all times of the day, there is simply no excuse to miss out on growing your network of allies and friends. We wouldn’t be LOUD if there wasn’t some fun involved, so this was also a year of celebration. Throughout the summer we took part in Pride festivities in Vancouver, New Westminster, Surrey and the Fraser Valley, increasing our visibility throughout the province and creating new alliances within those dynamic communities. In December we held our annual holiday party, drawing crowds to the Olympic 5

Message from the LOUD board Village to mix and mingle. In July, we held our AGM at the Fish House in Stanley Park. The number of members in attendance was inspiring and we were honoured to share our achievements from the previous year and look to a promising future. The fantastic spread put on by the restaurant also contributed to our enthusiasm, as it showcased the quality offerings in our membership. The annual LOUD Gala was held this summer in Gastown and we were delighted to present a record number of scholarships to awe-inspiring individuals from across the province. Our LOUD Scholarships, PRIDE YOUTH Scholarships and the Jim Deva Memorial Fund are made possible by the continued generosity of individuals, associations and businesses in our community. We are grateful and humbled to see Jim Deva’s legacy live on in these awards to help voice the importance our emerging leaders have to our community as a whole. Every year, LOUD stands for Leadership, Opportunity, Unity and Diversity. That means celebrating our difference as well as the values that unite us. It means supporting our emerging leaders and embracing our elders. It means valuing community as an essential component to business success. It means connecting, sharing and building ties with each other so we can be better, stronger and louder together. We hope you’ll join us in pursuing that vision in 2016 and beyond.

Carol works with women business owners who want to create meaningful work that’s profitable too. You know, on average, over a lifetime, a woman makes a million dollars less than a man. And women try to

make up that difference by working harder, putting in longer hours, trying to do it better. Which leaves them feeling frazzled, exhausted, and discouraged. I teach them to use mindfulness, create a plan for positive change, and then implement it. And in the end they have a sense of peace about money and their businesses are more profitable too.

With approximately 150 members, Vancouver Frontrunners is one of the largest running and walking clubs in British Columbia. Founded in 1983, we are also one of the oldest LGBT sporting clubs in Vancouver and are members of International Front Runners, an affiliation of LGBT walking and running clubs throughout the world. We meet twice weekly (rain or shine!) every week of the year and participate in a number of races, fundraisers and sporting competitions. We are also a very social bunch, dining after our workouts and holding monthly social events such as potlucks, movie nights, barbecues, and even road trips to meet up with our sister Frontrunner clubs in Portland and Seattle. Our members range in age from their 20s to 70s and represent everyone from social walkers and joggers to competitive runners. Vancouver Frontrunners welcomes everyone’s participation regardless of fitness level. Come join us!

WE Arts—Creating community through art From Vancouver’s downtown core to English Bay, thousands of artists live, work, and play in the beautiful West End. WE Arts was founded in 2012 by a group of West End residents who wanted to feel a greater sense of belonging in their neighbourhood and to connect with the creative minds around them. Working with the City of Vancouver and other stakeholders, WE Arts mission is to enliven the arts and culture scene through community-led arts programming. Now in 2015, we are leading the West End Art Plan - a community development process engaging local artists, arts groups, residents and city planners in discussions and workshops that will provide the foundation for future arts activities and needed facilities in our community.

WESA is a proud supporter of the LOUD Scholarship Foundation.
