Message from the LOUD board Welcome to the 2015/16 LOUD Business Directory. Why are we LOUD? LOUD is an acronym for Leadership, Opportunity, Unity and Diversity. We have extended our brand from our charitable foundation as we believe the attributes are as important in the business world as in a charity. LOUD Business is founded on three pillars: Networking, Community & Philanthropy and we strive to blend these principles in all our activities. We host events. We produce printed and online resources and we run our charitable foundation. In May last year we held a sell-out Gala lunch to recognize our 2014 LOUD Scholarship recipients. With the assistance of generous sponsors and donations, including a significant one from the West End Slo-pitch Association (WESA) we were able to award scholarships to students who are already demonstrating leadership in their communities throughout BC. We held our AGM in July and were pleased with the great interest of members and supporters. The board was re-elected and we were joined by Danielle Jarvis. Later in the month we cemented our strong partnership with Vancouver Pride Society by jointly hosting a lunch reception for the Pride Legacy Award recipients for the second year. We rounded off the month by participating for the first time at Prince George Pride parade and festival celebrations, In August we took to the street of the West End in the Vancouver Pride Parade. Our small float punched above its weight with our booming music and enthusiastic dancing supporters carrying our signature pink umbrellas.

In September we resumed our popular Frequent Friday networking lunch series with business and community speakers. This is an increasingly popular monthly opportunity for members and visitors to enhance their reach within the LGBTQA community Our bi-weekly breakfast group (BNG) continues to meet at the Chateau Granville Hotel on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month. The group welcomes new participants to join our loyal core group at friendly meetings open to all. LOUD Lounge after work drinks has expanded into a monthly event for casual networking. Over 60

Message from the LOUD board attended our holiday party in December and we have been moving the event around LOUD Business member venues. Lezervations was born last September as a quarterly social series initiated by QMUNITY and LOUD Business to provide opportunities for LBTQ women to make business and personal connections. Each of these dinner events has been a sell-out. For details of all LOUD Business events the first place to look is our website at www.loudbusiness.com. We have the full calendar of LOUD events and other community events. Business and community group members can post their own events free of charge. The website has a searchable member directory giving details of all our member businesses and organizations. Also it is the first stop to find out about LOUD Business membership and to sign-up online. Over the last year we have continued to work closely with Westender newspaper who host a monthly LOUD page showcasing our members, LOUD and community events. Check it out on the last Thursday of each month. All of us at LOUD Business were deeply saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Jim Deva in 2014. Jim was always a member and mentor. He had supported our charitable foundation since its inception with his time, advice and financially too in the form of the annual Little Sister’s Scholarship. We were proud to be asked by Jim’s partner Bruce, Janine and family to create the Jim Deva Memorial Fund. Donations have been flowing in to this dedicated fund from individuals and corporations. With his family’s guidance and future donations this fund will support generations of young people to continue the legacy of selfless community support that

6

Jim stood for. The LOUD Foundation benefited again from a significant contribution from WESA and from individual scholarship sponsors. We thank them for their donations. The need for our support was demonstrated by an all-time record number of applications for our scholarship scheme from diverse applicants from all over BC. We will be able to make awards to 7 recipients at a ceremony in June 2015. The board of LOUD Business strives to offer our members opportunities for exchange of ideas, networking and increased revenues. We aim to carve out a unique position. “We are where community meets commerce”. We actively invite and encourage non-members to participate in our events and hope that soon they will make a decision to join us. We are stronger and obviously louder together. Please keep this directory close throughout the year and consider supporting our members as they support our community. Every dollar that you spend is a vote for the future that you would like to see.

But they manage to do their art wherever they are, whatever their situation. We are a smaller firm which gives us the time to offer meticulous attention to detail that our clients have come to love and respect. As a Charitable Giving Advisor my role is to help people to create their own charitable giving plan and legacy, no matter what charitable cause they would like to support. My core belief is that the majority of people will help others in need AND they would do more if they could. I help them define their charitable interests and focus them on the impact that they want to make. Then assist their professional advisors to create a personal charitable giving plan, which could include: passing down their values, leaving their mark on the world, and also providing maximum tax relief.

We are a text-based theatre that trusts in the ability of the playwright to wrestle with these questions. We champion open-mindedness, authenticity and engagement. We embrace diversity of all kinds, encourage and nurture queer youth, and strive to build bridges between all socially marginalized groups and between queer and non-queer communities.”
