EXPO OPINIONS

Re:“Expo’s troubled legacy,” April 28, 2016. Expo 86 was one of the great what-if moments in Canadian history. Housing prices were already rising due to migration from southern Ontario before the fair opened, but without Expo there may not have been the large influx of wealth from other parts of the world. If

Bennett and Pattison had not pushed Expo through, Vancouver today might be a West Coast version of Toronto. With no Expo 86 it is unlikely that there would be a mass transit system. SkyTrain was very unpopular before it opened. Most Vancouverites (particularly those who lived south of the Fraser) wanted more bridges, not a new public

transit system. History proved them wrong, but without Expo there is a strong chance that they would have got their twinned bridges and new highways. Another thing to keep in mind is without Expo 86 Vancouver would not have had the global exposure needed to bring in the film industry. “Filmed in Vancouver” used to mean an

YOUR CITY CITY SHORTS // CITY MOVES TO SHUT DOWN ILLEGAL POT SHOPS

To the victor goes the spoils. Grant Lawrence photo

Triumphing over trash talk Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown @GrantLawrence

“You are the worst goalie in the entire league!” It was a classic volley of trash talk, spat from the lips of an enemy player, inches away from my goalie mask grill. It was a potentially confidenceshattering comment; the only caveat being the trash talk was dished in the handshake line at the end of the game, right after we had beaten said trash talker’s team, ousting them from the 2016 beer league hockey playoffs. You could say maybe I had it coming. Like most aspects of sports, it’s arguable. When the final buzzer sounded to end the first round of the FlyingVees playoff series, signaling the trash talker’s team’s exit and our advancement, you could say, as a beer league goalie, I celebrated the FlyingVees’ victory maybe a wee bit too much. Being a huge Tiger Williams fan, I attempted to ride my stick the length of the ice, like a witch on a broom, just like Tiger outrageously did with brute aplomb in the 1980s after scoring a big goal for the Canucks. It turns out that riding a goalie stick is hard to do, especially in goalie equipment. I got about five feet and keeled over like a dingy in a gale. But my victory celebration didn’t stop there. Once I regained my skates, I pointed and shouted down the ice at the losing team, “THAT ONE WAS FOR NICK THOMAS!” The backstory: In beer league hockey, just like in any competitive sport, rivalries grow and intertwine like thorny weeds. Our fiercest matchups for the past couple of seasons have been against said trash talker’s team. During one particularly nasty game right in the thick of the Christmas season, one of their defensemen delivered a brutal hit from behind, sending my childhood friend, longtime bandmate, and original Flying Vee, Nick “Lock-Eye” Thomas, head first into the boards. An ugly melee between the teams ensued. Nick never played another game for

Westender.com

the rest of the season or the playoffs, out with a concussion. We lost the game 9-2. We held our cool and our tongues in each and every game we played against them after that nightmare before Christmas, determined to strike back for the offence against Nick by delivering them loss after loss.We swept them throughout the rest of the regular season. Then came the two back-to-back, intense, and very close playoff matches. When that final buzzer sounded and they were finally done like dinner, the pent up emotion of half a season erupted from within my sodden goalie gear like Sam Kinison resurrected. The trash talker’s team both heard and saw me wildly celebrating our playoff sweep. They went ballistic.Tina the referee corralled me and told me to cool it, warning me not utter a word in the handshake line. Many of the trash talker’s team, seething with anger, either didn’t shake my hand or squeezed it so hard while dishing insults, I wondered if my goalie stick grip would ever be the same. I regretted the celebration immediately, and offered apologies to my teammates, theirs, and to the league, but… when do goalies get to celebrate, anyway? Apparently, when the losing team has left the ice. I had to make good for my teammates, but found I couldn’t shake the phrase “worst goalie in the entire league,” so I instead I tried to use the words as motivation for the rest of our run, determined to prove the trash talker wrong. The Flying Vees, a happy hodgepodge of musicians, doctors, and dog-walkers, played in perfect formation in front of me. Our semi-final was a tight, 3-2 overtime victory, which vaulted us into the championship game.We won that final contest 4-0, my first shut-out in eons. I definitely waited until the other team had left the ice before I raised the championship trophy over my head. Maybe that volley of nasty trash talk was exactly what I needed… W Grant Lawrence is the author of The Lonely End of the Rink: Confessions of a Reluctant Goalie.

The city’s push to issue business licences to illegal marijuana dispensaries got more complicated over the weekend as 23 pot shops were ticketed for defying an order to close their doors while another 22 abided by the city’s deadline to shut down. To date, the city has issued 44 tickets, including 21 to three separate shops that did not participate in the city’s new regulation scheme. Andreea Toma, the city’s chief licensing inspector, said the city will continue enforcement this week and expects to issue more $250 tickets to pot shops that refused to shut their doors last Friday. Toma said additional tickets will be issued to those shops targeted over the weekend. “The risk of staying open, outside of regulations, is that they can get

Chuck Varabioff, owner of the BC Pain Society on Commercial Drive, with his $250 ticket for operating a business without a licence. Dan Toulgoet photo the fines on a daily basis,” said Toma, noting none of the inspections of the pot shops required the assistance of the Vancouver Police Department. “At the same time, we are also looking at prosecutions and injunctions.” The city imposed a deadline of April 29 for all marijuana shops to close that didn’t fall into a permitted zone or were too close to a school or community centre. The city made the order six months ago. *7'%. $9+.##6(5!29/-.4 Courier

The cost of those tax credits were forecast to hit nearly $500 million this fiscal year, according to the provincial budget released in February. Provincial tax credits for the film and TV industry averaged about $255 million a year from the 2010-11 to the 2013-14 fiscal years. Since then, the industry has been booming as the lower Canadian dollar brought a flurry of US productions north of the border. –Tyler Orton, Business in (5!29/-.4

BC GOVERNMENT CUTS BACK ON FILM TAX CREDITS

The BC government is cutting back on the film tax credits enjoyed by so many foreign productions in recent years. The province announced Monday (May 2) that tax credits for movie and TV producers will drop from 33 per cent to 28 per cent beginning in October. Meanwhile, foreign visual effects and animation studios with offices in Vancouver will see their tax credits go from 17.5 per cent to 16 per cent.

Divest from damage and invest in a healthier future David Suzuki Science Matters

@DavidSuzuki

If people keep rapidly extracting and burning fossil fuels, there’s no hope of meeting the 2015 Paris Agreement climate change commitments. To ensure a healthy, hopeful future for humanity, governments must stick to their pledge to limit global warming to 1.5 or 2 C above pre-industrial levels by 2050. Many experts agree that to meet that goal, up to 80 per cent of oil, coal and gas reserves must stay in the ground. That makes fossil fuels a bad investment – what analysts call “stranded assets.” Putting money toward things that benefit humanity, whether investing in clean energy portfolios or implementing energy-saving measures in your home or business, is better for the planet and the bottom line than sinking it into outdated industries that endanger humanity. Because we still live in a fossil-fuelled world, avoiding investments in dirty fuels and infrastructure is difficult. For individuals who use mutual funds, finding viable plans with no fossil fuel holdings is challenging, but not impossible, especially as demand increases. But

while individual investment choices coupled with growing demand for fossil-fuelfree options make a difference, the real momentum is in institutional investments. Even there, public pressure and campaigns have a huge impact. Many banks and investment advisers are warning clients about the dangers of fossil-fuel-related portfolios, noting that climate agreements, government regulations, reduced demand and market volatility make them risky. Some, such as HSBC, suggest divestment as one route, but note some investors may just want to pull their money from the riskiest sectors, such as coal and oil, or keep investments so they can influence company decisions. McGill University’s board of governors touted the latter as one reason for rejecting a widespread call to withdraw about $70 million in fossil fuel money from its $1.3-billion endowment fund. But the university appears blind to the problem. In a report to the board, the McGill Committee to Advise on Matters of Social Responsibility wrote, “The Committee is persuaded that the beneficial impact of fossil fuel companies offsets or outweighs injurious impact at this time.” In response, many McGill alumni, including David Suzuki Founda-

tion Quebec and Atlantic Canada director-general Karel Mayrand, returned their degrees. The inability of students, faculty, staff and the public to convince boards at McGill, the University of British Columbia, Concordia University, Dalhousie University and the University of Calgary to divest shows how entrenched the fossil fuel industry is when it comes to large investors. But it also shows that individuals play a major role in getting institutional money out of the industry. Although these campaigns haven’t convince those boards to divest – yet – they’ve raised awareness about fossil fuel investments. The divestment campaign has also won numerous successes. A growing number of universities, banks, pension funds, unions, churches, cities, insurance companies, individuals and even the UK’s Guardian newspaper have pulled funds – which makes fossil fuel investments even shakier. The David Suzuki Foundation works with Genus Capital to ensure that none of its endowment fund is invested in fossil fuel-related funds, and to develop strategies for ethical investing – which hasn’t harmed returns. In fact, Genus reports, “fossil fuel free investing is proving more profitable than con-

ventional investing.” According to 350.org, the major force behind the divestment movement, “more than 500 institutions representing over $3.4 trillion in assets have made some form of divestment commitment” as of late 2015. Divesting is just the start. As 350.org notes, reinvesting in “renewable energy, energy efficiency, and climate mitigation and adaptation infrastructure” not only helps the world shift away from fossil fuels, but is also financially wise. One option besides stock portfolios is to reinvest in initiatives that help the climate and the bottom line, such as making buildings more energy efficient. According to the Guardian, “One conservative report calculated that investing $400,000 on efficiency in a 100,000 square-foot building would deliver $1.50 per square foot in reduced energy costs over a similar building without the efficiency” – for an annual saving of $150,000! Wastefully exploiting and burning fossil fuels is outdated. There’s no reason to put money into industries that destroy the natural systems that make human life possible. But there are many reasons to stop giving them money. It’s time to invest in a healthier future. W & 8.54! "94. 51 )5-'0,/3 zuki.org.

flooding our social media feeds, local shops and (by default) our homes. With the organic, sensual appeal of the global gypsy still running strong in décor, the summertime must-have looks are vibrating with an airy bohemian energy, grounded in the ancient methods of indigo dyeing. Indigo, known in plant form as Indigofera tinctorial, grows beautifully in Southern India. It is harvested into the richly saturated blue dye, sold around the world in powder format, or most commonly “indigo cakes,” which are neatly packaged blocks of the intensely coloured powder. Through careful (yet totally manageable) processes, the powder is returned to a liquid form in order to create the dye used for fabrics. While many mainstream retailers are offering indigoinspired prints and palettes, the true spirit of the method is best captured by local boutique, Maiwa Handprints. A mainstay for everyone from DIYers to fundamental believers in sustainable fair trade, Maiwa offers globally sourced goods for decor and fashion, as well as classes and supplies for those keen to become more hands on with their style. The shop’s primary location is nestled in the heart of Granville Island, but also has sister companies Maiwa Supply (stocking kits and supplies for the handson buyer) as well as Maiwa East, which specializes in internationally sourced reclaimed furnishings and larger decor items. Started by Charllotte Kwon, Maiwa is celebrating 30 years of building close personal relationships with international artisans to bring the best of global design to Vancouver. Sophena Kwon, Charllotte’s daughter and key member of the Maiwa team,

has taken the traditional art of indigo dyeing to a modern, approachable and ultimately chic level amongst the creative crowds in Vancouver. Collaborating with other like-minded small businesses, Sophena began a movement called Indigo Social: a creative, projectbased workshop series in a social environment through which she shares the dyeing methods of shibori and itajime, her own personal expertise and hands-on experience with eager crowds. I recently attended the latest Indigo Social and became enamoured with the traditional art form. Although skeptical of my own ability to create anything as remotely impressive as the examples hung on the walls, I was admittedly blown away by the creative energy of the process and how every person seemed to find a rhythm to their madness and end up with a stunning piece to showcase. With the next Indigo Social upcoming on May 10, a few spaces remain for the event. Tickets – which include fabric, dye, tutorials and a fabulous group of creatives to work alongside – can be organized online through SophenaKwon.com. W @indigosocial @maiwahandprints

that, while Vancouver did have a number of Vietnamese eateries, those focusing on the food of their home region (Hanoi) were practically non-existent. Thus Mr. Red (Duong’s family nickname) was born. The only drawback was the size. The restaurant barely fits 20-odd people, and take-away became a large part of the business. Nonetheless, people would regularly line-up at lunch and dinner to eat the fragrant bún cha, a broth loaded with pork belly and meatballs, along with fresh herbs, bean sprouts and vermicelli, and laced with vinegar and fish sauce, as well as other favourites from the tiny kitchen.

With the opening of its second location in Kitsilano a few months ago, Nguyen and Duong now have a larger kitchen (and more seats) from which they offer an much-expanded menu (although still no liquor license). The food is based on family recipes that go back generations, and are typical of home-style meals from the region. Look for a series of nourishing pho and bún, like the truly excellent house soup ($10) with vermicelli, shredded chicken, assorted mushrooms and minced pork balls. Northern Vietnamese cuisine favours the use of fresh herbs like cilantro, mint, Thai basil and lemon balm. These are added to

The new menu also includes a series of traditional Vietnamese dumplings. The classic pyramidal rice dumpling ($5) is here, stuffed with minced pork and mushrooms around a perfectly-cooked quail’s egg. There’s also the odd but excellent pork and shrimp tapioca dumpling ($8). Steamed and wrapped in banana leaf, it’s aromatic, earthy and slightly sweet. Whatever you do, do not skip the chicken wings ($6.50). Lightly spiced and deeply buttery, these are deep-fried to dark, sticky perfection on the outside and juicy plumpness in. Service is friendly and

knowledgeable, and though there are still a few kinks to work out timing-wise, the warmth and hospitality can’t be quibbled with. The best deal is undoubtedly the family set meal; available on weekends. Two set menus (each is $37.50 for two people) includes green papaya salad, fried tofu with green onion in fish sauce, soup, steamed rice and salted eggplant, as well as a main like the caramelized fish in clay pot or grilled beef wrapped in betel leaf. There is also a rotating list of additional sides, if you need a little more. Try the steamed and caramelized pork ribs ($13.50) or the salted bone-in chicken with ginger and garlic ($13.50).

Deep-fried pork blood sausage ($12.50) might sound strange, but it’s magical. The special sides tend to be larger and can easily be shared between two or three people. West Side residents will definitely appreciate Mr. Red’s unique and fresh take on northern Vietnamese food, but I think East Side fans of the original location will also be drawn to Kitsilano on a regular basis to take advantage of the expanded menu and space. BEER & WINE

Aussie wines get cool Michaela Morris By the Bottle @MichaelaWine

Aussie wine went from hot, to not. There was a time when we couldn’t guzzle enough of Australia’s fun, affordable varietal wines. That was until Chile and Argentina started successfully competing for this niche. And eventually wine lovers grew tired of the monotony of Australian selections that were virtually restricted to full-throttled, jammy high-alcohol reds and weighty tropical whites. It can takes years to recover from old stereotypes but Australia is fully committed to altering perceptions. In an effort to freshen up its identity, Australia is going cool. To beat the heat, producers are seeking out the most southerly latitudes, looking for regions moderated by brisk ocean breezes and venturing higher in altitude. The new face of Australia includes wines marked by crisp acidities, fresh restrained fruit and lower alcohol. This Australia may surprise you but

ultimately it should win you back without any risk of palate fatigue. Tasmania is as far south as you can go in Australia and among the coolest of the cool. In certain areas, the climate has been compared to Champagne. Indeed high quality, traditional method sparkling is what the island has become known for, but Tasmania is also garnering accolades for still Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. On the mainland, the state of Victoria possesses plenty of cooler pockets. Around the city of Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula juts out into the Bass Strait benefiting from the cool sea air. Just inland, Yarra Valley enjoys reprieve from heat at altitudes up to 400m while both the Macedon and Strathbogie Ranges attain even loftier heights. Besides a focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, all of these regions offer elegant, medium-bodied Shiraz that favour savoury nuances over sweet fruit. Altitude is equally defining in the South Australia. The region of Adelaide Hills produces Australia’s

finest Sauvignon Blanc and is yet another source of delicious reined-in Chardonnay. In both Clare and Eden Valley, the highest elevations are responsible for zesty and vivacious Riesling, guaranteed to change your opinion of Aussie wine. You can chill out with Australia at Dish ‘n’ Dazzle on May 18 from 6:30-9:30pm at the Vancouver Convention Centre East. Tickets are $85 with proceeds benefiting the BC Hospitality Foundation. (May I suggest a thoughtful Mother’s Day gift?) Expect enormous diversity amidst the 100-plus Aussie wines with plenty of cool cats on display. The following are just a few highlights. Beer nerds gone wild VanBrewers celebrate the local homebrew scene with a piss-fest of the highest order Stephen Smysnuik The Growler @TheGrowlerBC

Consider this: a small group of devoted beer enthusiasts start a homebrewing club and unwittingly shape the course of Vancouver culture in the process. We’re talking, of course, about VanBrewers, Vancouver’s premier homebrewing club, which is throwing its sixth annual awards gala at the Cobalt this Tuesday. The awards were founded shortly after the club was started in 2010 – by Parallel 49 brewmaster Graham With and his partner, Katy Wright – as a way for club members to learn and improve on their beer. This was before With joined P49, of course – before P49 even existed, or

before most people were even aware of craft beer at all. VanBrewers was as grassroots as organizations get. “But once it started, we could see people just coming out of the woodwork… to nerd out on this,” says Scott Butchart, one of VanBrewers founding members, and now it’s executive director. “We started telling people about it and it got huge from there. It went from like 25 people to 125 in a year and a half.” In the time between, VanBrewers has grown into one of the largest homebrewing clubs in Canada, and certainly one of the most influential, spawning dozens of now-professional brewers and business owners. P49’s owners hired With as their brewmaster based on his reputation through VanBrewers. “It’s really hard to find people with training or brewing experience,” Butchart says. “The closest you can get are people who are nerds about homebrewing.”

MUSIC Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds (L-R): Ron Miller, Kid Congo, Kiki Solis, Mark Cisneros. Rick Marr photo

Kid Congo: Guardian of the psychedelic underground ALLAN MACINNIS @westendervan

There’s no question that Kid Congo Powers is hitting his stride these days. Both of his most recent albums with his band the Pink Monkey Birds – 2013’s Haunted Head, and 2016’s La Araña Es LaVida (which translates as “the spider is the life”) – are terrific: swaggering, slithering, and sexy garage Americana, with a switchblade in its boot and a bulge in its pants. But when you’re talking to someone who has played in the Cramps, the Gun Club, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, it takes a while to get around to his solo output. It makes you wonder if he ever resents his own past for hogging the attention. Reached by phone from his home base in Washington, DC, Kid Congo – real name Brian Tristan – laughs agreeably at the question. “... Do I get jealous of my past? No! There’s actually a lot of people who don’t care about the past that much, because they’ve found me along the way,” he tells Westender.

Continued from page 8 Parallel 49 opening in 2012 coincided with, and helped to facilitate, the popularity of craft beer and the proliferation of startup breweries. With Graham With at the helm, it not only legitimized the homebrew club, but also legitimized a mostly younger generation of amateur brewers. Members soon landed brewing gigs at other craft breweries, or launched their own, including Doan’s Craft

Westender.com

Besides, there’s continuity between what he was doing in the Cramps and the Gun Club and his current output. “The work has been laid out and I’m just continuing the work, that’s the way I look at it,” he says. “It’s pretty foundational, seminal work, because there was not really a psychedelic rockabilly band before the Cramps, and there wasn’t really a punk blues band before the Gun Club.” Kid Congo began his friendship with (now departed) Gun Club leader Jeffrey Lee Pierce at a 1979 Pere Ubu concert in Los Angeles. Pierce almost immediately suggested they form a band, and Kid Congo assented, even though he couldn’t play an instrument. Rough live recordings of his tenure in the Gun Club, early on, exist on the album The Birth,The Death,The Ghost, recorded at various venues in Los Angeles circa 1980. Lux Interior and Poison Ivy Rorschach of the Cramps were in attendance at at least one of the shows documented. “Dave Alvin from the

Blasters said Lux was taking notes, and trying to hide his cassette player under his coat,” says Kid Congo. When the Cramps invited Kid Congo to join – somewhat stunning the young man – he left the thenunknown Gun Club with Pierce’s blessing. He would rejoin a few years later, but it’s a point of curiosity whether he feels like he missed out by not being on the Gun Club’s first, classic recording, 1981’s The Fire of Love. “No, because I’d just made Psychedelic Jungle with the Cramps!” he laughs. “But I’m sure there was a twang of regret, because I’d played on many of those songs before.” He even co-wrote one of them, “For the Love of Ivy.” If Kid Congo learned how to play guitar from Jeffrey Lee Pierce, what did he get, specifically, from Cramps lead guitarist Poison Ivy Rorschach? “She taught me how to play guitar better,” he answers. “She introduced me to a fuzz pedal. She was quite patient and good at

teaching and she knew just what to do; I was young and ready for molding, and she knew how to sculpt me.” The Cramps also brought discipline to Kid Congo’s “expressionistic” playing, so that it “wasn’t noise or artiness or something, it was actually part of the music.” So how did it feel sharing the stage with Lux when he was in wild man mode? “Well, I didn’t have a concern for my safety or anything,” Kid Congo responds, explaining that he was mostly in the moment, focused on his own playing and presence on stage. As for Lux, “he was a daredevil – he was absolutely magical. I saw many incredible feats where I thought, I don’t know how this man is alive or unhurt. Or sued by people, for ripping people’s clothes off, or arrested like Jim Morrison...” For his own part, Kid Congo has been “knocked down, tied up by the legs with the mike cord and dragged around... one time, when Lux was kicking his heels, jumping off the drum riser, he kicked me in the head and I went flying back.

But then I just charged him with my guitar!” Kid Congo left the Cramps amicably, when they were engaged in a long spell of relative non-productivity, during a lawsuit with IRS Records. Pierce called him from Australia, where the Gun Club were supposed to be touring. “He’d had a fallout with the band and half the band didn’t get on the airplane. He was in Australia with Patricia [Morrison] and no one else, and he needed to save the tour. So they imported me.” As part of his carrying the work forward, Kid Congo promises his May 7th set at the Rickshaw Theatre will feature at least one song by the Gun Club or the Cramps. No doubt he will also play several songs from 2016’s La Araña Es LaVida, an album that pays homage to the classic MexicanAmerican garage rock and R&B of Kid Congo’s youth. The title track was inspired by Kid Congo’s research into Teotihuacan, a spider deity at a pyramid site in Mexico City.

“She was a complete dreamer and a hallucinationmaking psychedelic goddess,” he explains. “She guarded the underworld and the pyramid, and she sprouted hallucinatory morning glories from her head. And I thought, y’know, it’s kind of my duty to do the same thing? I felt kinship with her, because it’s my idea that I should have psychedelic ideas that are guarding music, underground music, and rock ‘n’ roll. It’s my duty to have hallucinations and bring them to people and make sure that music is still good and safe and guarded. And if I think of it, that’s the work of the bands I’ve been in, and been influenced and trained by.” W

Brewing, Callister Brewing, Moody Ales, Off the Rail, Dageraad and Luppolo (opening later this year). This is putting an elegant spin on it, of course. This is still a homebrewing club, which is about an inelegant a creative endeavor as you’re likely to find. Likewise the parties this crowd tends to throw, which are piss-fests of the highest order. These people like to drink, and they like to drink a lot. So if you’re expecting

this Tuesday’s VanBrewers Awards ceremony to reflect some level of maturity or elegance – or for it to look like any kind of awards ceremony you’re familiar with – as a result of its newfound influence, think again. It’ll be a celebration, though, and a testament to how devoted these people are to the craft of brewing beer. People enter the competition not necessarily to win, but mostly to figure out how to improve.

“The main reason for entering homebrewing contests is to get the feedback for their beer,” Butchart says. Rather than prizes, the contestants tend to want their evaluation sheets from judges to see what’s good and what they can improve on with their beer. It’s a unique approach to an award competition, where cooperation and constructive feedback trumps the competitive spirit.

The competition is open to anyone in Canada and professional breweries are eligible to submit, but the beer has to be made at home and not on a pilot system. Butchart says there are a record number of submissions this year at around 400. Judges will be evaluating the submissions all weekend, picking winners in each category and choosing the Best in Show out of those. And what fantastic prize

does the winner get to take home with them? “Prestige, mostly,” says Butchart. That’s priceless, after all. W

VISUAL ARTS MORE WITH LPY... On getting established after art school: As an artist, I had sketchbooks that were filled but I didn’t have the space, I didn’t have the studio, and I didn’t have some of the skills to pull off some of the paintings. But I figured that, if I keep doing what I’m doing the ideas and concepts will keep breathing and I’ll be able to catch up to some of them – the work that I wanted to do.

MOA reflects on 30 years of Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun KELSEY KLASSEN @kelseyklassen

Ask Lawrence PaulYuxweluptun about his art, and he’ll tell you about the Indian Act. Ask him again, and he’ll tell you about land claims, logging moratoriums, water rights, oil spills, residential school abuses, and Canada’s missing and murdered women. Ask him for his feelings on that subject, and he’ll tell you about his daughters, and how he feared for their lives under Stephen Harper’s rule. In conversation and, most notably, on canvas, the acclaimed First Nations painter lays bare the challenges facing indigenous people today. Quite tellingly, they are also similar, if not identical, to the issues his community was grappling with when he first started his career, more than 30 years ago. Meanwhile, the ideas he puts forward reflect conversations Canadians are just now starting to have, from the country’sTruth and Reconciliation Commission findings to the spectre of climate change, as a whole about their shared environment and history. May 10-Oct. 16 at MOA. On the cusp of this, his largest Canadian solo show in 20 years,Yuxweluptun remains as polemic as ever. Seated in his studio in a paintspattered leather chair, as his shaggy dog, Rez, happily chews a paintbrush at his feet, Yuxweluptun launches into a list, complete with dates and names, of the most egregious colonial injustices of the past 200 years, while taking every on-the-record opportunity to tell the politicians of British Columbia to fuck off. Behind him, the newest piece for his show sits almost finished. It isn’t until the end of the wide-ranging, hourlong interview, however, that he even acknowledges it – a richly-hued, 18x11-foot rendering of a spirit dancer transforming into a wolf in a longhouse, surrounded by fire, smoke, drummers and spirit guardians.Through the doors of the wooden structure, one can just make out the rolling lines of one ofYuxweluptun’s iconic landscapes in miniature, drawing his connection with nature into the sacred space. Joining this piece in the contemporary gallery at MOA are thought-provoking works like his 1990 Daliesque ozone-crisis exposé, Red ManWatchingWhite Man Trying to Fix Hole in the Sky; an excerpt from his 1997 installation, An Indian Shooting the Indian Act; and his recent boardroom- and back roomskewering Super-Predator series, as well as brand new works yet to be seen publicly. “Sometimes I consider myself a history painter,”Yuxweluptun says, of his groundbreaking subject matter. “I have to go back and record history, backtracking history,

Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun because if you only allow the colonialists to write history, what is really true?” As he says this, and bears witness to countless examples of colonial suppression from his childhood to now, his resentment hangs as palpably in the air as it does on the gallery wall.Yuxweluptun is a master at raising eyebrows, however, this time by calmly dismissing the idea that he might, in fact, be angry. “It’s not anger. It’s a natural part of an Indian being in this country,” he explains, before launching into a soliloquy on why Canada’s long-standing Indian Act should be renamed the White Supremacy Act. “I accept that Canadians treated us like shit. I accept the attitude of Canadians that are racist. They had to shut down the CBC comments because of all the racism that was written there. That’s basically […] par for the course of this country. “Harper said that native women were not on his radar, for all the missing and murdered women,” he continues, as an example, “and we had to sit through that government. That’s like saying, ‘Let’s put a target on every native woman in this

country.’ Because he [didn’t] – and Canadians don’t – give a flying fuck. They elected him,” he adds, heat creeping into his voice, “and it’s okay to go out and kill native women. I had to wake up to that every day, because I have six daughters, and I’m going, ‘Wow, you guys are a bunch of really fucking assholes.’ […] I’m supposed to have truth and reconciliation after this?” Yet he largely paints for a non-Aboriginal audience – using modernist art, he says, to subvert what an “Indian” is allowed to talk about. Born in Kamloops in 1957,Yuxweluptun (a Salish name meaning “man of many masks”) found his way to social activism at the side of his Coast Salish father and Okanagan mother. Both highly involved within native organizations; his father was founder of the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs and his mother was executive director of BC’s Indian Homemakers Association. Yuxweluptun remembers travelling with his father to meetings from Chilliwack to Williams Lake, listening to his elders debate issues such as land claims, fishing rights, and human rights. Having attended the Kamloops Indian Residential School before being granted the right to attend public school,Yuxweluptun also saw firsthand the devastation wrought by the residential school system, which he immortalized in his 2005 acrylic, Portrait of a Residential School Child. “The difference between public school and residential school is really clear. You know what that is?” he asks, brashly. “There’s a graveyard

in the playground outside. There was graveyards at the residential schools and they buried you there.” One might wonder then, whyYuxweluptun would agree to the hosting of this show at an anthropology museum – a collection house (he calls them “morgues”) like many others, with its own degree of colonial legacy. In response, Yuxweluptun, whose work has sparked conversation from the boardrooms of oil companies to the walls of the National Gallery of Canada, half-jokingly implies that MOA was the only institution that would have him. Kidding aside, though, the museum is one of the few places where his work can sit in dialogue with belongings from the Pacific Northwest. And the Emily Carr graduate adds that, as an aboriginal modernist, doors like this weren’t always open to him when he first began. “I didn’t get an offer to an artist-run centre until after I was at the National Gallery of Canada,” he says, as an example. “The art world is very much standard. It has its 72-per-cent male, white, Caucasian art, Canadiana policy, and the rest we’ll give it to the minorities. But you’ve got to be good at it,” he allows, after all these years. “The world of art is a gladiator’s arena of talent, and if you want to play in the world of art, there’s no rules. There’s no rules that say just because you think you’re good, you’re going to get there. It’s not true. You have to work twice as hard and be very good at it.” W y Lawrence PaulYuxweluptun: Unceded Territories runs May 10-Oct. 16 at the Museum of Anthropology (6393 NW Marine). MOA.ubc.ca

On the Indian Act: This is the problem about Canadians; they’re polite about their racism. They just word it different so it sounds good to the rest of the world, but what we’re doing is just fucking the Indians, the aboriginal people, over. On Stephen Harper: He’s made natives very leery of Canadians. I think that he was so right-wing. [Although], I always say that there’s no such thing as a leftwing government in this country, when you’re dealing with aboriginal people. On being a ‘landscape’ painter: You’re trying to solve the solutions of the world, when you’re still looking at band politics, versus municipal politics, provincial politics, federal politics. Then you’re looking at Crown land, native land, reservation land, cut-off land, comprehensive land claims; you’re looking at municipal, provincial, and federal parks. So in terms of, where I am culturally, dealing with the ramifications of making a “landscape,” you know, it becomes a very complicated process of the perception of what you’re trying to say within the landscape concept. On settling land claims: It’s an extinguishment policy. If you’re going to settle a land claim with this province [...] your rights will be extinguished forever. And if everything is forever, I have to count how much raindrops fall on my traditional territory for a year. They’re not free. I’m not just going to give you a rainbow for nothing. I’m not just going to give you an Indian summer climate for free. You’re going to have to pay for it. This is what natives have to deal with.

Tales of a triple threat

Jennifer Copping on screen vs. stage, and two Mother’s Day projects Sabrina Furminger Reel People

@Sabrinarmf

It’s a not unheard-of scenario in the acting biz:You book a primo recurring gig on a popular show. One day, after a great run, you flip open the latest script and discover that you’re going to be killed off. At first, you’re demoralized – and that feeling only increases when you discover that they expect you to play a corpse for a couple of scenes after your character’s demise. But it doesn’t have to be demoralizing, or even a negative experience at all.

REVIEW // KEANU

Starring Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele Directed by Peter Atencio After five seasons and 53 episodes of their hit sketch comedy show Key & Peele, the comedic masterminds finally make their big screen foray with Keanu. Following a breakup that leaves him depressed, Rell (Peele) finds a lost kitten on his doorstep and immediately falls for the feisty feline. But, a home break-in by some local thugs leads to the disappearance of

In fact, Jennifer Copping – one of Vancouver’s busiest screen and stage actresses – counts not one but two corpse experiences among the most cherished memories of her career. In the first season of FX’s Fargo (spoiler alert), after Copping’s character meets an untimely demise, Lester and Lloyd – portrayed by Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton – converse over her bulletridden corpse. “I got to basically spend the rest of the day on the floor watching Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman act,” the prolific actress recalls over tea in Kitsilano. “It was like a master class.” That memory is right up there with another glorious moment that was repeated over and over again, when Copping performed in Les Miserables alongside musical theatre legend Michael Burgess. “When I died at the bar-

the kitty so he enlists the help of best friend Clarence to go undercover as gang members and rescue the furball. The admittedly thin premise does wear out during the 100-minute runtime but there are plenty of jokes and enough heart along the way to keep momentum moving. Key and Peele are experts of timing and their skills are on full display in the movie as they effortlessly move from one ridiculous scenario to another without relying on raunchy humour or overused physical gags. Some bits totally hit the mark, others grow tedious. An extended scene involving

ricades every show, eight times a week, I would position myself so I could have my eyes open and watch him sing,” recalls Copping of the late Burgess, who portrayed Jean Valjean. “It made me cry every time. He was so beautiful, so committed. Watching him was a master class, too.” This theme of master class – of seizing every opportunity to learn and grow, even when you’re playing dead – recurs in Copping’s story, from her earliest beginnings to her current status as a highly regarded actress of both screen and stage. It’s been a busy last few years for Copping. In 2015 alone, she dazzled as Jesus in the Arts Club’s production of Godspell, as well as in a very different type of role in Rumble Theatre’s Indian Arm. On the screen front, her recent credits include When Calls the Heart, Becoming

a group of men sitting in a car harmonizing to various George Michael songs is brilliant, while a cameo from Anna Faris (playing herself) buying drugs overstays its welcome. Several other ‘guest spots’, including a scenestealingWill Forte, fare much better and the actual character of Keanu is adorable and gets a hefty dose of screen time. For the most part, the movie clips along with clever jokes and a surprising amount of well-staged action. Keanu doesn’t break any new ground but should help expose the brilliance of the dynamic duo. -Thor Diakow

The only things that I have to alter sometimes are energy and vocal levels,” says Copping. On TV and film sets, “the audience is in that camera.” She continues to make time for coaching, teaching, and mentoring – as well as for working on her own craft. Copping advises her acting students to do the same. “Don’t ever think that you’re done with class,” says Copping. “You can always keep learning. It’s there for you. It’s your church as an artist.” Copping is currently filming a role in the upcoming vampire-centric Van Helsing television series. She also

Redwood, Fargo, Motive, Continuum, Supernatural, iZombie, and Mother of All Lies. Copping’s story begins on the Sunshine Coast. At four years old, she stepped into a Sechelt dance studio and discovered her second home; as a young teen, her family relocated to Vancouver so that she could sign with an agent. She was soon studying singing and musical theatre in addition to dance. Acting was a natural progression from there, says Copping – which is “funny, because acting is where I feel seen. Of the three that I do, it’s the one where I think you get to see all of me.” At 16, Copping headed to PEI to understudy the titular role in Anne of Green Gables. Two years later, she was off to Toronto to understudy Eponine in Les Miserables. Her 19th birthday fell on opening night. Around the same time, Copping was getting her first taste of the film and television sphere. She danced in an episode of 21 Jump Street where the leads infiltrated a performing arts high school, and followed up with a speaking part on Booker. “By the time I was 19, I’d had a crazy experience,” says Copping. “I wish I’d bought a condo back then. I bought leather pants and a vacuum.” Since those early crazy days, Copping has glided back and forth between stage and screen. She’s never felt like she had to pick one medium over the other, or even that they’re all that different from one another. “[In theatre], the audi-

about the vegetable other than the fact it tastes good wrapped in bacon or prosciutto on the grill. While this information is in fact correct, there are many layers to this delightfully weird green spring veggie. Did you know there is a white version, and a genetically modified purple one? True story. Asparagus is both a succulent and tender spring-growing perennial plant like artichokes and rhubarb. It’s delicious and versatile: you can go classic and plain by eating it with a little butter, salt and pepper; dress it up with some Hollandaise; get really creative by adding it to your omelette or frittata; or even bake it into some sort of other yummy interesting creation. When choosing the perfect spears you should go by feel and colour, make sure that your stalks are firm, straight and bright green. The white “buttstock,” as some call it, is tough and inedible, so choose asparagus that has no to little amount of this. Growing asparagus is like a long-term relationship, because it takes three years for the seed to fully grow. So if you are not in it for the long haul, plant some lettuce instead (they are a wham-bam-thankyou-ma’am kind of plant). I guess that’s why asparagus aren’t the cheapest veggies on the shelf. There is a place called Oceana County in Michigan that has proclaimed itself the asparagus capital of the world and even has a festival every June to celebrate the harvest. I don’t know if they go by volume, but if they do, I’ve got bad news, China produces most of the world’s asparagus. Sorry Oceana, but I’m sure asparagus lovers near and far appreciate your enthusiasm. Now it’s no urban myth that asparagus makes you have pungent smell-

ing urine (and semen), but what’s interesting is that not everyone can smell it, and this is actually a genetic condition called specific anosmia. For you folks, all I gotta say is, trust us, it smells. And that’s not the only weird/interesting thing about this edible spear. Did you know that white asparagus is just regular asparagus grown without sun? Farmers will actually cover the growing plant with soil and when it’s exposed to sunlight after harvesting it turns pink. So why aren’t we eating pink asparagus? Because apparently there is no market for it. So besides being delicious and weird, there are tons of other reasons to indulge in this green sticklike veggie, like the packed nutrient content. Not only is it a good source of protein, glutathione, B6 and folicin but it was also renowned in ancient times as an aphrodisiac. I guess there’s nothing like smell of stinky pee to get you in the mood? No judgement. Here are a couple of other things that asparagus can do for you, nutritionally.

VITAMIN K

Free Will Astrology Ask Mish: Don’t shit By Rob Brezsny “Silence is not silence, but a limit of hearing,” writes Jane Hirshfield in her poem “Everything Has Two Endings.” This observation is apropos for you right now. There are potentially important messages you’re not registering and catalytic influences you can’t detect. But their apparent absence is due to a blank spot in your awareness, or maybe a willful ignorance left over from the old days. Now here’s the good news: You are primed to expand your listening field. You have an enhanced ability to open certain doors of perception that have been closed. If you capitalize on this opportunity, silence will give way to revelation.

Your ability to accomplish magic is at a peak, and will continue to soar for at least two more weeks. And when I use that word “magic,” I’m not referring to the hocuspocus performed by illusionists like Criss Angel or Harry Houdini. I’m talking about real feats of transformation that will generate practical benefits in your day-today life. Now study the following definitions by writer Somerset Maugham, and have faith in your ability to embody them: “Magic is no more than the art of employing consciously invisible means to produce visible effects. Will, love, and imagination are magic powers that everyone possesses; and whoever knows how to develop them to their fullest extent is a magician.”

According to author Vladimir Nabokov, the Russian word toska means “a dull ache of the soul, a longing with nothing to long for, a sick pining, a vague restlessness.” Linguist Anna Wierzbicka says it conveys an emotion that blends melancholy, boredom, and yearning. Journalist Nick Ashdown suggests that for someone experiencing toska, the thing that’s yearned for may be “intangible and impossible to actually obtain.” How are doing with your own toska, Gemini? Is it conceivable that you could escape it -- maybe even heal it? I think you can. I think you will. Before you do, though, I hope you’ll take time to explore it further. Toska has more to teach you about the previously hidden meaning of your life.

“Gandhi’s autobiography is on my pillow,” writes Cancerian poet Buddy Wakefield. “I put it there every morning after making my bed so I’ll remember to read it before falling asleep. I’ve been reading it for 6 years. I’m on Chapter 2.” What’s the equivalent phenomenon in your world, my fellow Crab? What good deed or righteous activity have you been pursuing with glacial diligence? Is there a healthy change you’ve been thinking about forever, but not making much progress on? The mood and the sway of the coming days will bring you a good chance to expedite the process. In Wakefield’s case, he could get up to Chapter 17.

In the 16th century, European explorers searched South America in quest of a mythical city of gold known as El Dorado. Tibetan Buddhist tradition speaks of Shambhala, a magical holy kingdom where only enlightened beings live. In the legends of ancient Greece, Hyperborea was a sunny paradise where the average human life span was a thousand years and happiness was normal. Now is an excellent time for you to fantasize about your own version of utopia, Leo. Why? First, your imagination is primed to expand. Second, dreaming big will be good for your mental and physical health. There’s another reason, too: By envisioning the most beautiful world possible, you will mobilize your idealism and boost your ability to create the best life for yourself in the coming months.

“Anytime you’re going to grow, you’re going to lose something,” said psychologist James Hillman. “You’re losing what you’re hanging onto to keep safe. You’re losing habits that you’re comfortable with, you’re losing familiarity.” I nominate these thoughts to serve as your words of wisdom in the coming weeks, Virgo. From an astrological perspective, you are in a phase when luxuriant growth is possible. To harvest the fullness of the lush opportunities, you should be willing to shed outworn stuff that might interfere.

On Cracked.com, Auntie Meme tells us that many commonly-held ideas about history are wrong. There were no such things as chastity belts in the Middle Ages, for example. Napoleon’s soldiers didn’t shoot off the nose of the Sphinx when they were stationed in Egypt. In regards to starving peasants, Marie Antoinette never derisively said, “Let them eat cake.” And no Christians ever became meals for lions in ancient Rome’s Colosseum. (More: tinyurl.com/ historicaljive.) In the spirit of Auntie Meme’s exposé, and in alignment with the astrological omens, I invite you to uncover and correct at least three fabrications, fables, and lies about your own past.

Poet Charles Wright marvels at the hummingbird, “who has to eat sixty times his own weight a day just to stay alive. Now that’s a life on the edge.” In the coming weeks, Scorpio, your modus operandi may have resemblances to the hummingbird’s approach. I don’t mean to suggest that you will be in a manic survival mode. Rather, I expect you’ll feel called to nourish your soul with more intensity than usual. You’ll need to continuously fill yourself up with experiences that inspire, teach, and transform you.

“Anybody can become angry,” said Greek philosopher Aristotle. “That is easy; but to be angry with the right person, and to the right degree, and at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way, that is not within everybody’s power and is not easy.” I’m pleased to inform you, Sagittarius, that now is a time when you have an exceptional capacity for meeting Aristotle’s high standards. In fact, I encourage you to honor and learn all you can from your finely-honed and well-expressed anger. Make it work wonders for you. Use it so constructively that no one can complain.

To celebrate your arrival at the height of your sex appeal, I’m resurrecting the old-fashioned word “vavoom.” Feel free to use it as your nickname. Pepper it into your conversations in place of terms like “awesome,” “wow,” or “yikes.” Use a felt-tip marker to make a temporary VAVOOM tattoo on your beautiful body. Here are other enchanted words you should take charge of and make an intimate part of your daily presentation: verve, vim, vivid, vitality, vigor, voracious, vivacious, visceral, valor, victory, and VIVA!

When he was a boy, Mayan poet Humberto Ak’ab’al asked his mother, “What are those things that shine in the sky?” “Bees,” she answered mischievously. “Every night since then,” Humberto writes, “my eyes eat honey.” In response to this lyrical play, the logical part of our brains might rise up and say, “What a load of nonsense!” But I will ask you to set aside the logical part of your brain for now, Aquarius. According to my understanding of the astrological omens, the coming days will be a time when you need a big dose of sweet fantasies, dreamy stories, and maybe even beautiful nonsense. What are your equivalents of seeing bees making honey in the night sky’s pinpoints of light?

“Sometimes, a seemingly insignificant detail reveals a whole world,” says artist Pierre Cordier. “Like the messages hidden by spies in the dot of an i.” These are precisely the minutiae that you should be extra alert for in the coming days, Pisces. Major revelations may emerge from what at first seems trivial. Generous insights could ignite in response to small acts of beauty and subtle shifts of tone. Do you want glimpses of the big picture and the long-range future? Then be reverent toward the fine points and modest specifics.

where you eat, my friend Sex with Mish Way

@MyszkaWay

I am deeply infatuated with a boy who has made very clear that he wants nothing to do with me. He led me on, and then we finally slept together. What makes it super complicated is that he is in my band and I have to see him all the time and it’s breaking my heart, especially when I see him with his girl fans. I cannot get him out of my mind no matter what I do. He doesn’t realize just how perfect for each other we are. Our music is fueled by the tension between us, glances and riff battles do confirm. I could quit the band, but it’s going so well. I already wrote three songs about him, so that outlet doesn’t work either. The more depressed I am, the better songs I write, the better we play, the more shows we get, and the more I have to see him. Don’t tell me to get out and see others more; I am five fucks further and I have two other guys now stalking and bothering me. I am lame for falling for someone in my band. It’s so NOT rock ‘n’ roll. I’ve also tried a voodoo spell. And drugs. What else? Help. What are you talking about, “so NOT rock ‘n’ roll?” Do I need to remind you of the twisted, incestual love story that created Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors, one of the best-selling, critically acclaimed albums of all time? Voodoo spells only work if you are 13-years-old and the come down from drugs usually erases any euphoria of the high.Writing songs about this dude is your best choice, but it’s only a form of harm reduction. It will release you for a moment, but then you have to sing that song for as long as the band exists, reminding yourself that you fucked your bandmate and he rejected you. Eventually, the words will reform to mean something new but only when you get over this.Trust me, you will get over this. Your bandmate is not right for you. If he was, you would have continued to have sex and maybe develop a romantic relationship. All rejection hurts, but romantic or sexual rejection is a huge heartburn. It fucking kills, but it’s part of life. It’s necessary to being human. All the greatest songs are about it. (That, and of course, Satan.) That feeling you get when you see him flirt with fangirls will go away. It’s not going to fade fast, but I promise you

it will. You only want to be with him because he does not want to be with you.The pain you feel is coming from a very basic, instinctual part of your brain. He is the cocaine and you have yet to detox. The first step is rehab. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got about romantic rejection was from my hippy dippy neighbor Renee. I was devastated over a breakup I knew was coming, but when I actually got dumped, it bulldozed me so hard I turned into dirt. I was a fucking mess. While sitting on Renee’s couch, drunk, crying and shaking, thoughts of my ex taking over my head like a migraine, she said to me, “You have to remember that time is going to heal this. You feel horrible right now, but that feeling is not forever. In three months you’ll start to think about him less. And in six months, even less. Then, eventually you will become indifferent and just look back at the memory as something that just kind of happened.” Then, I went and wrote a bunch of songs. I don’t know what it’s like to have to stare at someone who rejected me while on stage beside them. My guitar player is like my brother and romance has never been an issue. The unfortunate thing about your situation is that you can’t do the one thing you are supposed to do after being rejected by someone you liked: separate yourself from them so you can move

on.You took a big, gross shit right where you eat and now you have to deal with the food poisoning you gave yourself. I know you feel like an idiot, but you are not.You are just a person who developed a crush on someone who decided that he did not feel the same way. Shit happens and yours happened all over your dinner plate. Now, you have a choice to make. You can continue to make yourself miserable and pine after someone who does not feel the same way, or you can snap into self-aware mode, realize that this is not the end of the world, and slowly accept the fact that he does not feel the way you do. In fact, you probably don’t even feel the way you do, but romantic rejection turns us into crazy, desperate, lovesick fools.Your ego is a huge bitch when she gets her ass kicked. You and your bandmate make music together. That is much more unique and special than a romance. You did not work out sexually, but you clearly have a strong bond when on stage and in the studio, so don’t let that go because of sex. You got this. Love, Mish
