quite sure that I am not alone. The friendly and fun Winter Olympics atmosphere is long gone. Have any Vancouver councillors strolled down Granville Street lately between Robson and Davie? On any given day or evening the sidewalks have become an extension of the Downtown Eastside and it usually gets worse in the spring and summer months.

ADULT EDGE CARD

Once the council has its way with Robson Square there will be one more area of the downtown core that will be open to the homeless and the useless. And I don’t mean to sound unkind – I am not talking only about individuals who suffer from addiction or who suffer from mental illness. I am talking about individuals who have chosen to become separate from the general population. These individuals have no respect for property or people. They have lost all concept of cleanliness and have no qualms about leaving their garbage behind, and this includes their own excrement. Most have dogs that are there to protect them and therefore who knows what situation would make them attack. Before making this decision, were plans made that will address the above-mentioned issues? I certainly hope so, because these issues involve the safety and security of all Vancouverites and visitors. Please take a few unpretentious walks through the Granville Area between Robson and Davie. I would be very interested in hearing about your experiences. –Kathy O’Brien

The Mt. Pleasant Murder’s Michael Jorgensen takes a swing. Chung Chow photo

Pitch perfect East Van baseball Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown @GrantLawrence

I cradled the baseball in my hand, staring down the throw line into the catcher’s glove. I imagined the perfect sizzler releasing from my fingertips, right into the mitt, burning the catcher’s palm. I glanced around, feeling the pressure. It wasn’t the same kind of nervous anticipation the members of the Mt. Pleasant Murder and the Railtown Spikers were feeling for their first game, watching from behind sunglasses in their dugouts on either side of the sandlot. This was a different kind of pressure. I was throwing out the ceremonial first pitch on opening weekend of the brand new East Vancouver Baseball League (EVBL). Co-founder Justin Banal from the Isotopes Punk Rock Baseball Club offered me a cold can of Postmark Blonde, brewed about four blocks away. I looked at my watch. It was two minutes past noon on Saturday. He leaned in and gave me some words of encouragement for the pitch. “Just don’t 50 Cent it.” Excuse me? “Rapper 50 Cent did a ceremonial pitch for the Mets and threw it to first base.” Oh… OK. Just before I strode out to the non-existent pitcher’s mound, another skinny punk in a Mt. Pleasant Murder uniform walked up. “Don’t Carly Rae Jepsen it, dude.” It turns out that Mission’s own “Call Me Maybe” star attempted to throw out a pitch for the Tampa Bay Rays and literally dropped the ball. Michael Jordan, President Obama, and even pitching legend Nolan Ryan have all completely blown their ceremonial pitches. The PA crackled to life. It was a guitar amp with a RadioShack microphone plugged into it. EVBL co-director Sean Elbe introduced me. “Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome former lead singer of the Smugglers, current beer league goalie, and author of The Lonely End of the Rink, to throw out our first pitch!” A light smattering of confused applause followed. The heat was on. I wound up.

Westender.com

The founders of the EVBL, a bunch of baseball-obsessed punk rockers, are living out their own Field of Dreamsmeets-The Bad News Bears baseball fantasy, bringing a lost era of baseball back from the dead. They’ve built the EVBL from the sand up with a very specific heritage-style design. They built it, and the players came. Those players just have to play by the EVBL’s rules. The EVBL maintains complete artistic and aesthetic control over the teams in the league, right down to the logos. EVBL merchandise is already a hot property, and the league, for this year anyway, is full. Banal, a member of the Isotopes band and baseball team, explains the concept. “This city is really good for a lot of things – street hockey, soft ball – but there was no one playing real baseball for fun.” Co-founder Court Overgaauw, of the East Van Black Sox, continues. “At a certain point, many of us who grew up playing real baseball got turned away or off from the sport of a variety of reasons. This league gives us the opportunity to play the game the way it should be played.” And what is real baseball? Think hard balls pitched overhand against wooden bats. Besides the Isotopes, the league is heavy with members of the local arts community, specifically of the punk rock variety: members of the B-Lines, the Courtneys, Nervous Talk, the Tranzmitors, the Parallels, Uptights and more all suit up, but true to the EVBL word, this ain’t ultimate Frisbee. No shorts allowed. “Shorts are just not appropriate for baseball”, says Overgaauw. Really? “We’re serious,” says Banal. “You don’t wear shorts in baseball.” Luckily, the rule doesn’t extend to fans watching the games down at the sandlot in Strathcona Park, southwest diamond, corner of Hawks and Malkin. Games are most Saturdays through August. I let the ball fly from my right hand and watched it smack into the catcher’s glove. In an instant, I managed to achieve what I never could as lead singer of the Smugglers for 17 years: perfect pitch. PLAY BALL! W

BC’s health officer has declared a public health emergency in reaction to the increasing number of overdose drug deaths in the province that he says are on pace to exceed 700 by the end of the year. “This is, frankly, a crisis,” said Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall at a news conference Thursday in Victoria, where he was joined by Health Minister Terry Lake and deputy provincial health officer Bonnie Henry. “These deaths have a serious impact on public health and the numbers are unusual and unexpected, which is the criteria for declaring such an emergency under the Public Health Act.” Kendall pointed out overdose drug deaths have climbed steadily in BC in the past six years. In 2010, there were 211 deaths. That increased to 474 last year, with 121 recorded in Vancouver. About one-third of total deaths were linked to fentanyl. More than 200 overdose deaths were recorded in the first three months of this year. “At this rate, the total for

Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson. File photo 2016 could exceed 700, or even 800,” he said, noting the increases occurred despite what he described as “heroic” efforts by public health officials, emergency services workers, health providers and organizers of drug awareness campaigns. Vancouver Police Chief Adam Palmer welcomed Kendall’s announcement and said his department will share what information it can to help reduce overdoses and drug deaths. Mayor Gregor Robertson said it was of “grave concern” to hear Kendall call a health emergency. He said the city will cooperate with health officers to help reduce deaths and overdoses.Vancouver is the only city in Canada with two legal supervised drug injection sites and developed the so-called four pillars drug strategy to help reduce the

spike in deaths in the 1990s. “We’re seeing the impacts and fatalities on our streets,” the mayor said. “We’ll be working with [Vancouver] Coastal Health to make sure we’re doing everything we can to support the efforts to bring those overdoses down and deal with the fentanyl – it’s prolific now in drugs on the street.” *6'%. $8+.##5(4!28/-.3 Courier

MAYOR INSISTS HE WILL SEEK 4TH TERM

Mayor Gregor Robertson was insistent last Thursday that he will seek a fourth term at city hall despite his communications director leaving in February for a job in Ottawa and his chief of staff set to step down at the end of this month. Robertson stated his intention to seek re-election after

news broke that longtime chief of staff Mike Magee will become “special advisor” to the mayor for four months, before scaling back his role later this year. He said Magee will focus on ensuring Vancouver gets its share of available federal dollars for infrastructure projects, particularly transit and affordable housing. He will continue to earn his annual $120,000-plus salary. “We want to make sure there’s a steady, strong voice for Vancouver working with our Ottawa partners,” Robertson told reporters after stepping out of a Vancouver Police Board meeting. “Mike’s done lots of that in this past year in building good relations, so we want to continue that work with Ottawa.” Asked whether he was next to go to Ottawa, where he has built a strong relationship with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberals, Robertson said “I have no plans to go to Ottawa,” adding that he will seek a fourth term. “That’s my intention – yeah,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it.” Robertson was first elected in 2008 and was re-elected in 2011 and 2014. *6'%. $8+.##5(4!28/-.3 Courier

Shocking migratory changes bring electric rays to Canada’s Pacific David Suzuki Science Matters

@DavidSuzuki

Gary Krause was mystified by an unusual fish he caught in his trawl net off BC’s Pacific north coast in October. It was a Pacific electric ray, named for a pair of organs behind its head that can knock a human adult down with a powerful shock. Trawl fishery records show 88 of these rays in BC waters since 1996. Although an electric ray was first recorded off Vancouver Island’s west coast in 1928, nearly a quarter of the more recent sightings came from 2015 alone. Fishermen like Krause, who worked an astounding 4,000 days at sea over the past 35 years, are often the first to observe the beginnings of fundamental ecosystem shifts. In 2008, he also identified the first-ever brown booby, a tropical seabird, in Canada’s Pacific waters. Why are creatures like electric rays, which prefer warmer southern California or Baja waters, turning up with greater frequency further north? Unlike land temperatures, which constantly fluctuate, ocean temperatures are usually stable, with virtually no

daily changes, little seasonal differentiation and only minor shifts over decades. Most marine animals prefer a narrow temperature range and move only in response to changes. Short-term oceanographic events, such as El Niño and the Pacific “blob” – an enormous area of unusually warm water in the North Pacific – demonstrate that while oceans may be relatively stable, they aren’t immune to temperature shifts. These phenomena explain the appearance of unexpected species off BC’s coast over the past winter, including a Guadalupe fur seal, green sea turtle and Risso’s dolphins. Higher water temperatures are also changing the relative concentrations of microscopic, occasionally toxic algae. While these marine oddities don’t necessarily indicate a full-scale ecosystem shift, they may be signs of what to expect as the planet warms. Shorter-term phenomena correspond with longer-term oceanographic changes around the world. These changes promise to fundamentally alter the cast of characters in marine ecosystems before we’ve had the opportunity to adequately study them. Climate change is pushing more species of fish closer – and faster – to the cooler

North and South poles than similar climate-provoked wildlife movements on land. Fish are moving an average of 277 kilometres every decade and phytoplankton are speeding along at 470 kilometres. Land-based wildlife are inching along at an average of six kilometers a decade. These shifts are bringing together species that have never had contact before, introducing new predators that could result in regional extinctions. In addition to moving, phytoplankton, which produce half the world’s oxygen and support most ocean life, have been declining dramatically over the past century, an average of one per cent a year. Sea levels are also rising quickly because of climate change. Over the past two decades, global levels have risen more than twice as fast as in the 20th century. As water warms up, it expands. Thermal expansion in warmer ocean waters has been the greatest contributor to global sea level rise over the past century – although rapid melting of glaciers, polar ice caps, and Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets is also a factor. Higher ocean temperatures also stress coral reefs, which then release algae, causing the corals to bleach and often die. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef just experienced its worst

bleaching ever, with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority reporting that half the coral in the northern parts of the reef were dead, according to a Guardian article. Along with environmental impacts, warming oceans will create economic insecurities for industries such as fisheries. One study predicted a nearly 50 per cent decline in BC First Nations’ catches for culturally and commercially important fish by 2050. We can help marine life by reducing greenhouse gas emissions to keep global average temperature increases below the 1.5 C goal set out in the December Paris Agreement.Well-monitored fisheries, like those in British Columbia, will become essential data-collection points for understanding shifting marine environments. Although it’s difficult to reverse temperature and other oceanographic changes that climate change has already set in motion, we may be able to lessen the impact through habitat protection, strong fisheries management and robust scientific monitoring. The Pacific electric ray is just one of many marine canaries warning us of changing ecosystems. We’d be wise to listen to these signals. W & 7.43! "83. 41 )4-'0,/zuki.org.

The story behind the art/ antiques/collectibles: As a couple, we have a very hard time agreeing on art, which is why we still don’t have anything on our big dining-area feature wall!

What is it: A 14th-floor two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo in downtown Vancouver.

Downsides: Living downtown, it can get loud and very busy during the summer months.

Occupants: Erin Sousa, founder and creative director of Sparkle Media, my husband, Roberto, and our dog, Ava.

Neighbourhood haunts: We’re often over in Yaletown for eats (West Oak, The Parlour, Minami and Karameller are faves). We also love the Il Giardino patio, which is a stone’s throw away, Samurai Sushi, and Musette for coffee.

Aritzia opens on Robson and Thurlow Founder surprised at overwhelming success of brand Niki Hope Style File

@NikiMHope The newly opened 4,800-square-foot Aritzia location on the corner of Robson and Thurlow streets was buzzing on Friday night, and it wasn’t just because of the refreshing mojitos being handed out. There were a ton of eager and well-dressed shoppers and media types on hand to see the new space, which, with high ceilings and lots of soft natural light radiating in from the tall glass windows, was designed to evoke the feeling of a contemporary art gallery. According to Aritzia, the new location is not simply another store expansion, but instead a way to celebrate the evolution and differences of its various house brands. Design elements in the new location include an indoor raised garden, marble slab wall, curated art pieces, and a concrete ramp. All of the Aritzia stores on the Robson block connect, making it easy to shop between

the four spaces, including the Wilfred standalone boutique. At Friday’s opening, Aritzia owner Brian Hill turned up – in a grey suit and crisp white shirt – among the fashionable crowd, which was kept entertained by DJ Ultragrrrl. Attendees were kept fed and satiated with cocktails and canapés, which were inspired by Vancouver’s various neighbourhoods. Commenting on the expansion, which features four separate stores joined together, for a retail space totaling 13,000 square feet, Hill told Westender, “It’s interesting because we would never go and open four shops like this normally, but sometimes when things organically grow it can be more interesting than planned things, so we’re pretty excited about how it has all turned out.” Hill launched Aritzia in 1984 with his first location in Oakridge Centre, then a second location in Metrotown. Today, Aritzia has more than 70 stores throughout North America and is a brand synonymous with a young, fresh, contemporary, and cool vibe. The brand has an unmatched ability to hone in on what’s to come in fashion and make it accessible to the masses. Aritzia may be one of

the top break-out fashion brands to emerge from this sleepy town, which wasn’t exactly known as a fashion mecca when Hill launched. But clothing retail was in his blood. The Hill family ran Hills of Kerrisdale for the better part of the 20th century (and Hill’s siblings still do). “I learned a lot from my father and my uncle on how to run a business,” Hill said at Friday’s opening as the music blared in the background. “They didn’t run anything close to this scale, but at the same time taught me all of the basic business fundamentals.” When Hill started 30 years ago, he never anticipated the business would reach the magnitude it has. “We never expected to be this large and where we are at, but it kind of shows if you get a lot of people on the team and work really hard together [it can succeed].” He also notes it’s been a team effort getting to this point. “First of all, it’s not me – it’s a lot of people working for a long time. Some of them are newer; everyone works tirelessly for our brand,” he says. “But we’re all pretty proud of what we have accomplished.” W

It’s finally happened – there’s an official beer crawl taking place this weekend. Hop Circuit – a sort of Eastside Culture Crawl for the local beer and distilling industries – is designed to show off the booming businesses of the so-called Yeast Van brewery district. In case you’re unaware:Yeast Van is a loosely defined neighbourhood that includes a group of East Van craft breweries in the Grandview-Woodland neighbourhood.Yeast Van is not an official name – a Parallel 49 employee coined the name back in 2012 – but its colloquial use is growing every day. Currently there are nine craft breweries operating in the area between Clarke Drive to the west, Powell Street to the north, Semlin Drive to the east and Grant Street to the south – but the borders shift as new breweries open in the area. When Luppolo Brewing opens later this year near, Yeast Van’s borders will stretch westward to Vernon Street. And whatever! The craft beer industry isn’t really into borders or anything related to being boxed in. And the sheer

number of breweries operating inYeast Van is helping to revitalize a neighbourhood that’s been largely industrial, and has seen little-to-no tourist traffic in past 30 years, if ever. It’s a neighbourhood that hasn’t reached anywhere close to its full potential. But with the addition of the new St. Paul’s Hospital in nearby Strathcona, along with new condos and businesses that seem to be popping up every day, the strip of Hastings Street between Clarke and Nanaimo could well become another cultural hub for Vancouver – and could become the focal point for the already burgeoningYeast Van. Until that happens,Yeast Van will lose out to Brewery Creek as the go-to beer district for visitors. Brewery Creek, which is centred on Main Street and Mount Pleasant, has more to offer tourists, aside from delicious craft beer. But if Brewery Creek is the sizzle,Yeast Van is the steak – a sprawling beer district encompassing everything that BC’s craft beer industry has to offer. It’s also become Ground Zero for the collaborative and communityoriented approach to business that’s unique to the craft beer industry, which is exactly what the folks behind Hop Circuit

are hoping to showcase. If you don’t know theYeast Van breweries, get to know them. And what better place to start this new relationship than right here, right now.

ANDINA BREWING CO.

1507 Powell (Opening soon!) AndinaBrewing.ca The new kid on the block and set to open this year, Andina will be distinctly Colombian-themed. Brothers Nicolas and Andres Amaya were both born in the South American country and the brewery will be an ode to their homeland, with Colombianinspired brews, Colombian food and a Colombian-flavoured tasting room.

BOMBER BREWING CO.

1488 Adanac BomberBrewing.com Bomber’s story has been told so many times, it’s practically lore – some guys playing on a hockey team called the Bombers decided to open a brewery because one of their teammates, Blair Calibaba, had been supplying everyone with homebrew that they all thought could really sell. And boom, Bomber, opened in 2014, which is crazy – Bomber’s been such a prominent part of the industry since then it feels

CRAFT BEER

CALLISTER BREWING CO.

1338 Franklin CallisterBrewing.com Callister is Canada’s first collaboration brewery – an incubator of sorts for brewers hoping to market their brands and their beers before starting up a brewery of their own. Chris Lay, Callister’s owner, brews under the Callister banner, while three other brands cycle through the facility every 12 months. Currently, Real Cask, Brewery Creek and Machine Ales all operate out of the facility – and all offer something distinctly different – but by July there will be three new brewers.

COAL HARBOUR BREWING CO.

1967 Triumph CoalHarbourBrewing.com Coal Harbour is currently just a production facility – producing 311 Helles Lager, one of the finest craft lagers on the market – but a tasting room is supposedly on the way. Stay tuned for that.

DOAN’S CRAFT BREWING CO.

1830 Powell DoansCraftBrewing.com Vancouver’s smallest craft brewery might just be its friendliest! Head brewer Evan Doan is like the nicest, most enthusiastic guy in town, and their tasting room is certainly a reflection of that – a cozy, congenial environment.

LUPPOLO BREWING CO.

1123 Venebles (Opening soon!) LuppoloBrewing.ca One of three new breweries opening in the neighbourhood this year, Luppolo will offer a variety of West Coast style brews, with some Italian-inspired food options. If you’re wondering, Luppolo means “hops” in Italian. The owners are Italian, hence all the Italian stuff. We haven’t seen the facility yet, or tried any beers, but the owners are supremely nice people.

OFF THE RAIL BREWING CO.

1351 Adanac OffTheRailBrewing.com Off the Rail’s tasting room is the most peaceful of the Yeast Van bunch. What does that mean, exactly? It’s difficult to intellectualize a vibe, but I’ll try.The room is on the second floor, looking over the Adanac bike route, which creates a sense of heightened awareness. It’s south facing, and so bathed in natural light. The walls are all white, so the room has an immediate softness to it, creating an atmosphere that’s as far removed from hostility and anxiety

as possible. It’s a wonderful thing. Also, the beer’s really tasty and you should go there.

PARALLEL 49 BREWING CO.

1950 Triumph Parallel49Brewing.com And here lies Vancouver’s biggest craft brewery – the brewery that just keeps on growing. Will it ever stop? Who knows! And who really cares! As long as they continue to make weird, wild new beers – many of which appear only in their tasting room – while supplying the world (including Rogers Arena) with its dependable staple beers, they’ll continue on as kings of local craft beer community.

Hop Circuit connects community with brewers of East Van ROBERT MANGELSDORF @robmangelsdorf

the idea is to connect with the community, beyond just the tap room. “It’s a great chance to get to know all the breweries,” says Andrea Hugi, office manager for Strange Fellows Brewing. “You’ll be able to walk around the entire neighbourhood, see how the beer is made and meet the people behind it.” In addition to brewery tours, each of the breweries will also be releasing

If the brewers of Yeast Van are one big family, then this Saturday is their family reunion. For the first time ever, 10 East Vancouver breweries (as well as Odd Society Spirits distillery) will be opening their doors and offering public tours of their brewing operations. Called the Hop Circuit,

special limited edition beers to mark the event. Taking part will be Strange Fellows, Off the Rail, Bomber, Storm, Powell Street, Callister, Doan, Parallel 49, Coal Harbour, as well as Odd Society Spirits. Luppolo Brewing isn’t open to the public just yet, but they’ll be opening their doors to anyone who wants to come by and check out their progress.

Food trucks will be on hand throughout the circuit to provide sustenance to the masses. For those not inclined to walking, Cycle City Tours and Vine & Hops will both be offering guided tours around the neighbourhood. W

HOP CIRCUIT

takes place Saturday, April 24 from 3-9pm. For more information, call 604-215-0092.

POWELL STREET CRAFT BREWERY

1357 Powell PowellBeer.com Powell Street launched in 2012 and was integral to the Vancouver’s explosion of craft breweries. And for good reason – it’s a low-key, owneroperated business and focuses on quality of craft above anything else. It’s all about the beer, from the hoppy,West Coast leanings of their core lineup, to the more global and experimental seasonal and small batch brews.

STORM BREWING CO.

310 Commercial StormBrewing.ca The weirdest brewery in Yeast Van (and BC, actually) and, also, the oldest. It’s also the most prone to wild experimentation, and a visit to the mad science lab that is the brewery is frequently a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to try gems, like Cucumber Jalapeno Pilsner, Chai Ale, Pineapple Chocolate Stout and others that are brewed once, and probably never again.

STRANGE FELLOWS BREWING CO.

1345 Clarke StrangeFellowsBrewing.com Strange Fellows is one of just a handful of BC breweries that epitomize the true essence of craft beer: It’s family owned, it has a modest attitude toward growth, its staff and ownership are community oriented and it has an aesthetic all its own – in this case, sophisticatedly weird. The beer is consistently and life-affirmingly delicious, thanks to brewmaster Iain Hill, a veteran brewer with unreasonably high standards. But his neurotic drive is a reward to us all. Thanks Iain.

STRATHCONA BREWING

895 East Hastings (Opening soon!) StrathconaBeer.com EastVan’s newest brewery is set to open this summer with Michael “Fezz” Nazarec, host of Beer! The Show, serving as brewmaster. The brewery and tap room is located on the corner of East Hastings and Campbell, which means the borders of YeastVan will likely have to be nudged westward yet again. Fast food slowed down to a healthy pace Anya Levykh Nosh

@FoodgirlFriday Grabbing something on the go has normally been a painful experience for me

and my child. We’re not fans of the Golden Arches, the home of the Burger Family, or any of their compatriots. But a busy athletic schedule means we’re on the road a lot, and there isn’t always time to pack something that is both

nutrient-dense and easy to eat on the go. This is why the latest trend is making us jump (figuratively, in my case) for joy.The normally dirty-sounding term “fast food” is coming to mean something that is as healthy as what you might make at home – if you had the time, ingredients and inclination. These casual, healthy restaurants are promoting, for the most part, salad, of all things. Forget “house greens,” however. These salads are rich in proteins, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates. And they’re fast, whether you’re dining in or grabbing something to go. Most importantly, they taste good. And, the sandwiches and soups you can order with will fill you up whether you’re planning to ascend the Grouse Grind or spend three hours practicing fouettes. Or, you know, just eat ‘cause you’re hungry and all. Here are three places you should try right now.

THE BIRDS AND THE BEETS

Located in the old Sea

Monstr Sushi spot at 55 Powell in Gastown, this café appears small at first. Then you realize it stretches all the way through to Alexander Street (you can enter from either side). Suffice to say there are plenty of seats for everyone. Coffee from Bows & Arrows or Matchstick, tea from Cultivate Teas in Mt. Pleasant, housemade kombucha and ginger beer, sparkling water on tap – it’s all a good fit with the tiny a nd tasty menu. Choices like turkey from Rossdown Farms or seafood from Finest at Coast can be had in sandwich or salad form that rotate constantly. I tried the pork sandwich ($9), a beautiful loin stuffed with pickled kohlrabi and apple slaw on a curried sunflower seed spread. The bread is housemade, according to the girl behind the counter. It’s delicious. Have it as a salad to avoid the gluten, and pair with the really nice housemade pickles. There’s even quiche and the baked

goods change daily, based on what’s coming out of the oven. q ¡

FIELD AND SOCIAL

It’s all about the salad (and a bit of soup) at this bright, modern eatery on Dunsmuir in the heart of downtown. A goodly portion of the menu is gluten-free and vegetarian or vegan, and dishes that aren’t can be converted as needed. A classic beet salad ($11) is loaded with organic chickpeas, apple, orange and cucumber. I’m not normally a fan of two different dressings on the same salad, but the harissa-spiced goat yogurt is a surprisingly good pairing to the orange vinaigrette. Sen lek smoked tofu salad ($12.50) is a textural symphony of rice noodles, shitakes and other sautéed vegetables, ramen egg, scallions, hazelnuts and crispy shallots. Pair it with the sunchoke soup ($4) for a hearty vegetarian meal. z ¡ q

HUNGRY GUYS KITCHEN

This lighthearted spot on Granville is more about the bowls (with rice and beans, natch), but they are just as healthy, and offer a little more bulk. The concept is simple. It’s just under $9 for a base of white or brown rice, pinto or black beans, a choice of proteins that include organic tofu, and a couple of toppings like corn, shredded cheddar or pico de gallo. Add guacamole for $2 if you want, and you’re done. Salad lovers, don’t despair. There are a handful of hearty options, like the Pepita de Mi Vida ($10.50), which is layered with tofu, kale, quinoa, beets, cabbage, mint, apples, blue cheese and pumpkin seeds, all dressed with a maple balsamic vinaigrette. You can also build your own salad, à la salad bars in the 1980s, except with really good ingredients like organic quinoa, steak, local beets, fresh cilantro, roasted broccoli, goat cheese, and bacon. } ~ ~ | q

Last Sunday marked the second annual Garagiste North wine tasting, celebrating British Columbia’s little guys of wine. Even more rewarding than sampling their wares was chatting with the folks who make the wine. They are mostly a humble lot who believe passionately in what they do but continue to strive for improvement. Below are the small production wines that stood out and the people behind them.

SYMPHONY VINEYARD

Pat George and Lamont Brooks left behind the oil and gas business eight years ago. Rather than settling into early retirement, they returned to Lamont’s family’s fruit farm on the Saanich Peninsula of Vancouver Island to make wine. They planted a small portion to grapes in 2004 and released their first commercial wine in 2011.Today they

make 1,200 cases. z~ ~t ~¡ q 2015 Ortega ($18) A crossing of Muller Thurgau and Siegerrebe, Ortega is an important grape on Vancouver Island. Pungent musk melon and orange blossom lead to a dry juicy palate.

ANTHONY BUCHANAN WINES

Besides being the fulltime winemaker at Desert Hills, Anthony Buchanan also crafts wine under his eponymous label. A total whopping production of 135 cases earns him bragging rights as the smallest garagistes of the group. His focus is solely on single vineyard Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc. Regarding the latter, Anthony remarks: “Everyone does Chardonnay but Pinot Blanc is undervalued, underrated and there is a market for it.” ~ ¡ ¡ s q ¡ 2015 Pinot Blanc ($20) Buchanan ferments and

ages a third of this in new French barrels. Nutty with subtle vanilla notes, spiced Asian pear and a lovely texture, it will be released May 1.

SEVEN DIRECTIONS

| s ¡ Daniel Bontorin launched Seven Directions as a rosé exclusive brand. Why just pink? “Because Daniel loves r | qx winemaker in the team, Daniel looks to the wines of Provence for inspiration. He makes three varietal rosés from single vineyards throughout the Okanagan for a total production of less than 500 cases. He is also the winemaker at Volcanic Hills. z s q ¡ 2015 Fruitvale Ridge Vineyard, Cabernet Franc Rosé ($17) A mere two hours skin contact gives an appetizing pale pink colour. Light-bodied, dry, and refreshing with hints of strawberry, this is made for warm weather sipping.

A North Van boy by origin, Dylan Roche studied winemaking in Burgundy, apprenticing there as well as New Zealand. Pénélope Roche was born into it at Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion in Bordeaux, and has also worked in Spain, New Zealand and Australia. Besides making 460 cases under their own label, Dylan is the winemaker at Intersection while Pénélope consults for a number of Okanagan properties. They own a tiny plot of Zweigelt and Schönburger, from which

they craft their rosé.The remainder of the production is from purchased Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir grapes. RTerroir.ca

Their SKAHA Vineyard is in Kaleden, south of Penticton overlooking Skaha Lake and boasts fossilized sandstone soil. KrazeLegz.com

2014 Pinot Noir ($34.69) Sourced from an organic vineyard on the Naramata Bench, this Pinot Noir is aged in barrels for 12 months, of which a judicious 20 per cent is new. Good purity, balance and elegance.

2013 SKAHA Vineyard Cabernet Franc ($25.85) Aged for 20 months in predominantly used French oak, it offers crunchy cranberry, cherry and graphite along with firm but wellmanaged tannins. This is only their second release but the Thygesens are committed to learning as much as they can about Cabernet Franc. “Trying it from different regions of the world is a must for us,” states Gerry. Death From Above 1979 get back to their Vancouver roots GREGORY ADAMS @gregoryadamsbc

Start up a conversation about Canadian indie music with Sebastien Grainger, and he’ll be more than happy to talk about the greats. This could extend to his own experience as the drummer/ vocalist for mondo-distorted Toronto duo Death From Above 1979, but when he’s first caught on his cell phone out in Sudbury, Ontario, he reports that he’d just seen a classic performance from mighty, Maritimes-bred foursome, Sloan. “I was just kind of randomly creeping Sloan online and saw that they were doing their One Chord to Another 20th anniversary tour, playing that record front to back,” he tells Westender, adding that he was in town visiting his brother. “They played at the Townehouse, which is a tiny tavern in Sudbury – kind of a surreal way to see a band play a record that was so important to me in such a small setting. It sounded incredible!” While his old heroes are hitting intimate venues for their current tour, Death From Above 1979 only seem to be getting bigger as the years go on. Next week, the band plays its largest show in Vancouver to date, co-headlining the PNE Forum with Eagles of Death Metal. It’s taken 15 years and one breakup to get there, though. First founded in the early ‘00s between housemates Grainger and bassist Jesse Keeler, their first show was for a dozen people in a Long Island attic apartment. After hooking up with since-shelved Vancouver imprint Ache

Bassist Jesse Keeler (L) and Sebastien Grainger (R) bring their fuzzed-out power duo Death From Above 1979 back to Vancouver this Tuesday at the PNE Forum. Contributed photo Records for their 2003 debut EP, Heads Up, the twosome began flooding the West Coast every few months to play a series of small gigs at venues like the long-gone Piccadilly Pub and Mesa Luna, not to mention the messy bedroom area of East Van punk spot the Alf House. “Aside from the fact that Ache Records was putting out our music, it was so cheap for us to travel because there was only two of us. And we’d borrow gear. One of our parents had all these airline points accumulated through her company. It probably cost us $100

between the two of us to get to Vancouver,” Grainger explains of the duo’s time in town. “We were able to go and play with those bands, and be more involved in the Vancouver scene, at a certain point, than Toronto.” The band went supernova in 2004 via the release of their You’re aWoman, I’m a Machine LP, with songs like lead single “Romantic Rights” blasting by via furiously-fuzzed out bass melodies, dance-punk rhythms and Grainger’s confident croon. But two years of touring the world disintegrated the bonds between

Keeler and Grainger, leading to a break-up in 2006. Keeler would work on his house project MSTRKRFT and Grainger issued an album with his band, the Mountains, but by 2011 the two had patched things up for a reunion tour. Quickly, though, the unit realized they had more to offer than their greatest hits. Enter the band’s 2014 comeback album, The PhysicalWorld. “After about a year we started to feel like the good will of the reunion was waning, and now we were just a band. That’s why we started working on a new record,”

the drummer reveals. “We’re a band playing, having fun. It’s not enough to be doing the victory lap.” While certainly tapping into the in-the-red awesomeness of their early catalogue, The PhysicalWorld pushes Death From Above 1979 into differing extremes. “Right On, Frankenstein” is a rapidlypaced piece that initially showcases Grainger’s melodic sneer before exploding into a moshed-up finale of gun turret-quick bass noodling. Though technically still doused in ear-obliterating distortion, “White is Red” is a comparatively mellow-

grooved musing on lost love. With its shouted refrain of “Nobody knows anything at 21,” “Government Trash,” is another rager that finds Keeler running wild on his bass, and suggests the band’s second phase sees them wiser. “You can extrapolate that statement pretty much across any age,” Grainger admits, adding with a laugh, “Looking back, I had a bunch of stupid ideas. [But] I’m sure in 10 years I’ll look back at this time in my life and think ‘what a dum-dum.’” With The PhysicalWorld having picked up Rock Album of theYear at the Juno Awards earlier this month, and the group about to undertake an arena tour with Eagles of Death Metal, Death From Above 1979 seems to be even more popular than before. But while Grainger admits that getting bigger was always the M.O., he seems humbled by the hype. “As a ‘rock star’ you’re supposed to treat your audience like they’re yours. When I see our audience, we’re just borrowing them for this show. We’re one band on the playlist. I don’t see a Death From Above fan as a person that is unique to us. It’s a strange relationship.” When a rowdy throng of die-hard supporters show up in the front row of the Forum wearing the band’s iconic, elephant-nosed logo on their T-shirts, things are bound to get even stranger. Illness leads to poetic ‘Just Words’ Choreographer Serge Bennathan captures the courage of the artist through poetry, dance KELSEY KLASSEN @kelseyklassen

12 W April 21 - April 27, 2016

When you trace the steps of Serge Bennathan’s latest creative journey backwards, it leads to cancer.Three years ago, the decorated Canadian choreographer faced down that life-changing diagnosis and triumphed, but the experience left Bennathan with an urgency he says he hadn’t felt prior. “Three years ago I had a health problem, and from this health problem came urgency. [The urgency] to talk to people,” Bennathan recalls, speaking with Westender by phone one evening last week,

“but more specifically, I had to talk poetically. I had to say what I think about artists.” Out of that epiphany came JustWords, a powerful, poetic dance experience encompassing the life and journey of the artist, premiering April 27-30 at the Firehall Arts Centre. “Little by little,” says Bennathan, “the word artist replaced for me words like dancer or choreographer. I find the artist extremely courageous, [...] and I have an extraordinary respect and admiration for people who spend their lifetime as artists.” The Jaqueline Lemieux Award-winning choreographer is referring not to only himself, but to the countless other dancers, composers and creatives he has met throughout his illustrious fourdecade-long career. Born in Normandy, France, in 1957, Bennathan’s pursuit of dance in his home country included

professional liaisons with the likes of Roland Petit in Paris and Rosella Hightower in Cannes, as well as the creation of his own company as a young dancer before emigrating to Canada in 1985. Once here, Bennathan landed with Le Groupe de la Place Royale in Ottawa, where he danced for two years before moving to Vancouver to focus on choreography, creating emotionally explosive works with troupes such as EDAM, Ballet British Columbia, and Judith Marcuse Projects, as well as befriending dance legends like the late Grant Strate. In 1990, Bennathan moved yet again, this time to Toronto, where he served as artistic director of the pioneering new-dance company, Dancemakers, before a final return to Vancouver in 2006 to found his current company, Les Productions Figlio. And while Canada and its artistic community embraced

Bennathan warmly, the choreographer says those early days of migrancy left an indelible sense of longing and a world of ghosts in his soul. JustWords is Bennathan’s romanticized portrait of this spiritual assailing, as well as the profound and joyous moments of an artistic life well lived. In the performance, Bennathan (an accomplished writer and librettist in his own right) recites original text, set to music by Bertrand Chénier, as powerhouse dancers Karissa Barry and Hilary Maxwell render the emotions of the piece through movement around him. “The [choreography] is to try to go with the power of the body,” says Bennathan. “The physical power, but also the power of the tenderness, the power of vulnerability, the power of abandoning yourself, and the power to dive into a new life without knowing where you land.” W

The audacity of Lisa Ovies camera, and yet the way the camera moved evoked this crazy emotion in me, and I realized that the camera was just as much of an actor as anyone else,” says Ovies. In that moment, Ovies “learned the power of storytelling, and the power of image.” Ovies was the kid who turned in film projects instead of book reports. She shot mock commercials and faux news reports on a clunky old-school video camera and edited off of two VHS tapes.

Sabrina Furminger Reel People @Sabrinarmf

Many of the people who enter the film biz do so because of a light bulb moment in their childhoods when their minds were opened to the magic of cinema. For actress-director Lisa Ovies, that moment of revelation struck during a pre-teen viewing of Alien. “There were no actors on

She was around 15-yearsold when she started plowing through the work of the filmmakers who’d inform her narrative voice: Robert Rodriguez; Kevin Smith; Quentin Tarantino; and Sam Raimi. “They’re all warriors that went, ‘I don’t need a studio to do this, I’m going to learn how to do it,’ and they did everything,” says Ovies. “At the time, I thought I was going to do it all, too.” Ovies laughs immediately after making this audacious statement, but she’s come pretty damn close to doing it all. The Vancouverite is an actress (in Whistler Film Festival alumnus Shooting the Musical and Jeffrey Lando’s Suspension, coming to DVD this month), producer (of Bedbugs: A Musical Love Story and the award-winning documentary Taking My Parents to Burning Man), casting director, writer, art department, and, most recently, director. Last month, the comedic short she directed, IWanna Date U, premiered at the Vancouver International Women in Film Festival – and shortly before that, she wrapped on her feature film directorial debut, indie horror flick Puppet Killer. Puppet Killer’s cast features a parade of Vancouver A-listers: Aleks Paunovic (Numb; iZombie), Kyle Cassie (Deadpool), Richard Harmon (The 100), Lisa Durupt (Murder She Baked), Lee Majdoub, and Gigi Saul Guerrero. “They’re all crazy,” raves Ovies. “Every single one of my actors signed on before they read my script. They all came in, and we died. I’ve never had a table read where we constantly had to reset because of so much laughing.”

Maybe the laughter comes from the fact that the horror director (who studied comedy at Second City in Chicago) hasn’t exorcised comedy from her life completely. “Comedy is where a lot of my instincts come from,” says Ovies, who also trained in documentary film, production and scriptwriting at Vancouver Film School. “I have a reputation now for horror. I love horror, but I won’t let it define me. I don’t think I’ll ever limit myself as to what kind of film I make.” As for Puppet Killer, it’s a straight-up horror flick, and the premise is in the title. It’s about a puppet who embarks on a murder rampage. The idea came to Ovies in 2014, when she was producing Bedbugs: A Musical Love Story. The light-hearted Crazy8s short centers on a woman who befriends the bedbugs in her boudoir. “I was on set with all these puppets singing, and I started thinking, ‘In a perfect world, what would I do with these puppets on film?’ And I’d kill everyone. I’d kill everyone with these puppets,” says Ovies, laughing. The idea began as satire, and ended up as serious horror. Ovies and her small cast and crew shot in the mountains last December. “These people pulled off a miracle,” says Ovies. And she recognizes that there’s a certain level of audacity that comes with deciding to do a horror film – starring a puppet, no less – for her feature directorial debut. “We would just laugh [on set], and people would go, ‘how do you see this coming out?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t fucking know, it’s a puppet,

Vancouver actress Lisa Ovies. Ian Redd Photography photo man, let’s shoot it and figure it out,’” says Ovies. The audacity paid off. The film is now in post-production, and Ovies says it’s already attracting attention from festivals and buyers. You can see that audacity in other aspects of her life journey, like when she visited 22 countries in eight years (“It taught me about empathy and it taught me about forgiveness and it taught me to calm down”), or how she intends to keep acting while also directing and producing new projects, or in those moments at film festivals where, when mere feet away from her idols – including Robert Rodriguez

and Seinfeld writer and producer Peter Mehlman– she asked them for advice. “I was watching all of these other people meet them and fan and walk away, and I went, ‘nope, this is my one chance,’ so I went, ‘hey, I would love to pick your brain sometime, I’m really eager to learn and I’m humble enough to say I’ve got a long way to go,’ and that changed my life,” says Ovies. “I haven’t had a person say no since.” W : $+3?4 ,02;6 2A Suspension >A #5# (;72AA2A7 %<82- D!*

super foods, it might have finally met its match in bugs. Yes, bugs. Entomophagy is the practice of eating insects. Foodies and earthconscious individuals are catching on to this slowly rising trend that has been a dietary stable for many cultures across the globe for millennia. We westerners have been brought up to think of insects as yucky, but it might be the way of the future. As our world slowly becomes apocalyptic (zombies, etc.), we gotta start getting creative with our food choices. Whether you eat meat or not, the fact is the raising and manufacturing of meat can cause havoc on the environment. Yes, some practices are more sustainable than others, but the bottom line is that as we face a global food crisis, and the raising of bugs and insects could be the answer because they actually require far fewer resources (yes, there are actual bug farms). According to a 2007 study by the Water Footprint Network, every kilogram of ground beef requires 16,000 litres of water to produce. However, raising cricket meat uses almost no water at all, and requires far less space. Even the United Nations recommends adding bugs to your food repertoire. Insects are not only environmentally sustainable, but also very abundant, and eating bugs is actually great for your health, too. Insects are a great source of protein and B vitamins, calcium, zinc, fibre, copper, potassium and healthy fats. They really pack a bunch of nutrition for the human body, probably why a lot of other animals and cultures already make it an important part of their diet. Real talk: I did try a grasshopper once at a foodie event. They were the tiny ones, not the huge fellas, and I’m not there yet. They were seasoned to taste spicy and were super crunchy and slightly chewy. Bottom line is that eating insects is a huge untapped source of nutrients and

calories that would help to ease the needs of our growing human population. There are more than 1,900 edible insects on Earth (that we know of). Insects tend to take on the flavour of whatever it’s been seasoned with, similar to tofu. They have also been compared to nuts, seeds, crab meat and buttery popcorn in taste and texture. That’s all dependant on your insect of choice, of course; mealworms are going to taste different than grasshoppers and so forth. Some farms, like Entomo Farms in Ontario, are even making nutrient dense insect flours, which go great in a smoothie. After hearing the above information you might be tempted to ditch your Costco card and go out and hunt for your own bugs and insects as a means of grabbing life by the balls. The bad news is that some insects easily accumulate environmental toxins, and there is little regulation when it comes to gathering, farming, selling and serving insects. The bug industry is still in, the early stages, but its probably a good idea to trust the professionals – they probably have a better idea of what they are doing than you do hunting for you supper in Stanley Park. SEX

Free Will Astrology Ask Mish: Sex drive By Rob Brezsny “The writer should never be ashamed of staring,” said Aries writer Flannery O’Connor. “There is nothing that does not require his attention.” This is also true for all of you Aries folks, not just the writers among you. And the coming weeks will be an especially important time for you to cultivate a piercing gaze that sees deeply and shrewdly. You will thrive to the degree that you notice details you might normally miss or regard as unimportant. What you believe and what you think won’t be as important as what you perceive. Trust your eyes.

The ancient Greek geographer Pausanias told a story about how the famous poet Pindar got his start. One summer day, young Pindar decided to walk from his home in Thebes to a city 20 miles away. During his trek, he got tired and lay down to take a nap by the side of the road. As he slept, bees swarmed around him and coated his lips with wax. He didn’t wake up until one of the bees stung him. For anyone else, this might have been a bother. But Pindar took it as an omen that he should become a lyric poet, a composer of honeyed verses. And that’s exactly what he did in the ensuing years. I foresee you having an experience comparable to Pindar’s sometime soon, Taurus. How you interpret it will be crucial.

“I measure the strength of a spirit by how much truth it can take,” said philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Measured by that standard, your strength of spirit has been growing – and may be poised to reach an all-time high. In my estimation, you now have an unusually expansive capacity to hold surprising, effervescent, catalytic truths. Do you dare invite all these insights and revelations to come pouring toward you? I hope so. I’ll be cheering you on, praying for you to be brave enough to ask for as much as you can possibly accommodate.

Göbekli Tepe was a monumental religious sanctuary built 11,600 years ago in the place we now call Turkey. Modern archaeologists are confounded by the skill and artistry with which its massive stone pillars were arranged and carved. According to conventional wisdom, humans of that era were primitive nomads who hunted animals and foraged for plants. So it’s hard to understand how they could have constructed such an impressive structure 7,000 years before the Great Pyramid of Giza. Writing in National Geographic, science journalist Charles C. Mann said, “Discovering that hunter-gatherers had constructed Göbekli Tepe was like finding that someone had built a 747 in a basement with an X-Acto knife.” In that spirit, Cancerian, I make the following prediction: In the coming months, you can accomplish a marvel that may have seemed beyond your capacity.

In myths and folklore, the ember is a symbol of coiled-up power. The fire within it is controlled. It provides warmth and glow even as its raw force is contained. There are no unruly flames. How much energy is stored within? It’s a reservoir of untapped light, a promise of verve and radiance. Now please ruminate further about the ember, Leo. According to my reading of the astrological omens, it’s your core motif right now.

Uh-oh. Or maybe I should instead say “Hooray!” You are slipping into the Raw Hearty Vivid Untamed Phase of your astrological cycle. The universe is nudging you in the direction of high adventure, sweet intensity, and rigorous stimulation. If you choose to resist the nudges, odds are that you’ll have more of an “uh-oh” experience. If you decide to play along, “hooray!” is the likely outcome. To help you get in the proper mood, make the following declaration: “I like to think that my bones are made from oak, my blood from a waterfall, and my heart from wild daisies.” (That’s a quote from the poet McKenzie Stauffer.)

In many cultures, the butterfly is a symbol of transformation and rebirth. In its original state as a caterpillar, it is homely and slow-moving. After its resurrection time in the chrysalis, it becomes a lithe and lovely creature capable of flight. The mythic meaning of the moth is quite different, however. Enchanted by the flame, it’s driven so strongly toward the light that it risks burning its wings. So it’s a symbol of intense longing that may go too far. In the coming weeks, Libra, your life could turn either way. You may even vacillate between being moth-like and butterfly-like. For best results, set an intention. What exactly do you want?

“I gladly abandon dreary tasks, rational scruples, reactive undertakings imposed by the world,” wrote Scorpio philosopher Roland Barthes. Why did he do this? For the sake of love, he said – even though he knew it might cause him to act like a lunatic as it freed up tremendous energy. Would you consider pursuing a course like that in the coming weeks, Scorpio? In my astrological opinion, you have earned some time off from the grind. You need a break from the numbing procession of the usual daily rhythms. Is there any captivating person, animal, adventure, or idea that might so thoroughly incite your imagination that you’d be open to acting like a lunatic lover with boundless vigor?

“Difficulties illuminate existence,” says novelist Tom Robbins, “but they must be fresh and of high quality.” Your assignment, Sagittarius, is to go out in search of the freshest and highest-quality difficulties you can track down. You’re slipping into a magical phase of your astrological cycle when you will have exceptional skill at rounding up useful dilemmas and exciting riddles. Please take full advantage! Welcome this rich opportunity to outgrow and escape boring old problems.

“When I grow up, I want to be a little boy,” wrote novelist Joseph Heller in his book Something Happened. You have cosmic permission to make a comparable declaration in the coming days. In fact, you have a poetic license and a spiritual mandate to utter battle cries like that as often as the mood strikes. Feel free to embellish and improvise, as well: “When I grow up, I want to be a riot girl with a big brash attitude,” for example, or “When I grow up, I want to be a beautiful playful monster with lots of toys and fascinating friends who constantly amaze me.”

In one of his diaries, author Franz Kafka made this declaration: “Life’s splendor forever lies in wait around each one of us in all of its fullness – but veiled from view, deep down, invisible, far off. It is there, though, not hostile, not reluctant, not deaf. If you summon it by the right word, by its right name, it will come.” I’m bringing this promise to your attention, Aquarius, because you have more power than usual to call forth a command performance of life’s hidden splendor. You can coax it to the surface and bid it to spill over into your daily rhythm. For best results, be magnificent as you invoke the magnificence.

I’ve got a controversial message for you, Pisces. If you’re addicted to your problems or if you’re convinced that cynicism is a supreme mark of intelligence, what I’ll say may be offensive. Nevertheless, it’s my duty as your oracle to inform you of the cosmic tendencies, and so I will proceed. For the sake of your mental health and the future of your relationship with love, consider the possibility that the following counsel from French author André Gide is just what you need to hear right now: “Know that joy is rarer, more difficult, and more beautiful than sadness. Once you make this all-important discovery, you must embrace joy as a moral obligation.”

Sex with Mish Way

@MyszkaWay

I’m in a bit of a conundrum right now with sex. I’m a 24-year-old woman currently in recovery from a hellish, sixyear-long eating disorder. I’m back to a healthy weight and eating normally, interspersed with moderate exercise. The problem is now that my body is like, alive again, my libido has hit me like a ton of bricks. I’m super horny all the time, which is kind of fun after years of feeling like a wet sponge, but also difficult because I still have really intense body image issues. I’ve been masturbating a lot but I really need to be fucked. I’m average looking, and if I put in some effort, can be kind of hot. I would just go out and pick up some random dude for the deed but I am still so tender, anxious, and sensitive about my body that I’m afraid of letting a stranger touch me. At the same time I fucking need to be touched so badly. Any advice? I’ve struggled with my body dysmorphia since I got tits and an ass when I quit figure skating as a teenager. I remember playing badminton with my sister in the backyard and catching a glimpse of my reflection in the sliding glass door. I was wearing a bikini. My ass was white, pale and blinding like the sun. I had a woman ass: real, thick and speckled with these lumps and imperfections. At least, that’s the way I saw it. I hated it. I hated every single goddamn inch of that motherfucker. I wanted to take a knife and cut out the fat. Slice into my thighs and spill out everything until I was just bones. Why do we do this to ourselves? I’m pretty sure the reason I remained addicted to morphine for far too long was because it prevented me from eating or drinking alcohol. I looked great, but only in my demented eyes. Then again, I was high on morphine. Everything looked great. The world was the most magical waterfall and I was just basking in its refreshing stream. (Don’t do drugs.) Body image issues follow us around like a shadow. Even today, as an adult woman who knows better, I don’t leave a bathroom without lifting up my shirt and scrutinizing my abdomen. I commend you for getting healthy and coming to terms with yourself. I’m sure you are a total fox. Quit this “put in some effort” shit. Sex appeal is a nothing but a healthy dose of confidence with a pinch of the right make-up.Walk tall and fuck like you mean it. As for the fucking, you need to get laid. Moreover, you

must get over your lingering body image issues by getting back on that horse and letting him touch your tits. The earth will not shatter around you, I promise. Being naked in front of a stranger is going to be terrifying as hell, but you have to just dive into the deep end. Never forget, a little liquid courage never hurt anyone and only makes some dudes a little less Pauly Shore. My girl Jessie Kahnweiler recently took her wildly successful webseries, The Skinny to Sundance and I suggest you check it out. It’s a television show about her on-going struggles with bulimia as she tries to make it as a comedian in Los Angeles. One day, Jessie and I were talking about sex and body image and she told me about how whenever she would fuck a guy, she would be positioning her body to look good, rather than feel good. She was performing sex to create the shapes she thought would make her rolls disappear or her thighs seem slender, instead of riding that dick into orgasm. She rarely enjoyed sex because she was so obsessed with how she looked to the person she was fucking. But this is the thing: sex is not about how you look, but how you both feel. This is not porn. It’s real life sex. And real life sex is gross, sweaty, fun and passionate. (Ask any of my porn star friends: sex on camera is not what happens in their every day lives.) For all my erratic body image issues and self-hate, sex has been the time I have felt the most free and gained the

most confidence about my body. I know the feminists are going to get their tampons in a twist over this next statement, but the confidence I got from hearing men I slept with tell me how much they loved fucking me – or complimenting parts of my naked body I normally would have been disgusted by – gave me this reassuring reality check. I am hot in the sack, not for my waist or my boobs or my pussy, but because I enjoy sex and put my whole self into it. I know you can enjoy sex too, despite that post-anorexic shadow that is clinging onto you like a needy toddler. Do not be afraid of someone touching your body. Women care about all these little things that men just don’t. Men don’t notice the tiny inch of chub on our arms or that spider vein in our thigh that sticks out when we don’t have a tan. Men just want to devour you like the delicious angel food cake you are. Embrace being eaten. You will find someone you click with eventually, but you aren’t going to find him if you keep masturbating in your bedroom alone. Have a few shots, take some random home from the bar and close your eyes and jump. You will catch yourself. I believe in you and your pussy. W Love, Mish
