NO LOVE FOR LIQUOR LAWS

Went to Greek Days with friends and decided to go to a fun pub on

Broadway. Met some nice people and we were having a great time until we were told the liquor inspectors said that only six people were allowed on their deck. WTF! There were three tables, so you are telling us that if there were more than two at a table we weren’t allowed to enjoy a few drinks and a great Greek day celebration?

I witnessed an assault on Davie at Cardero last month. I stayed by the lady because she was shaken. When the police showed up, the constable asked what had happened and then ran my name. She was so rude to me. I’ve never had a criminal record. I’m afraid I am going to think twice now before helping anyone when the police need to be involved. I am a woman and was completely humiliated by the constable’s treatment towards me. –Anonymous

YOUR CITY Bike share program gets ready to roll

JOHN KURUCZ @johnkurucz

Take me out to the ballgame Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown @GrantLawrence

My family was recently invited to my friend Pat Kelly’s 40th birthday party at the ballpark. We’re talking Vancouver’s legendary, opened-in-1951, lovingly restored Nat Bailey Stadium in Queen Elizabeth Park. It was a glorious Saturday night, the first weekend of the summer of 2016, and the first weekend home game for the Vancouver Canadians this season. There was a palpable excitement in the air, and I’m not even a baseball fan. When we arrived, the parking lot was already full, but the attendant kindly let us pull in anyway to unload our kids. This type of very friendly service was on display throughout the ballpark. Even the happy janitor insisted on high-fiving my son. The 40th birthday party was over the far left field wall, an area known as the “Hey Y’all Zone” (named after some new alcoholic summer beverage) that came complete with Old South rocking chairs and a spectacular, reverse-view of the entire ballpark and Coast Mountains beyond. We were sharing the area with another group: “Welcome American Consulate and Pat Kelly’s 40th birthday!” The only curveball was that, upon arrival into the exclusive Hey Y’all zone, no booze was actually allowed to be consumed in the Hey Y’all zone. This was due to a SNAFU with the liquor board (the stadium is working on it). Luckily, the birthday party (for Pat Kelly, who is now 40) was saved thanks to an adjacent standing-room-only outdoor private bar where we could get our boozy fix with two drink tickets and a buffet dinner, all for the 40th birthday group deal price of $45 each. We had a toddler in tow, so while I navigated the packed concourse on our way to the bouncy castle,

I heard someone bellow, “HEY DAD! Yeah you, DAD GUY, get over here.” A huge man attempting to buy three beers (the limit is two beer per person) suddenly thrust a frothing lager into my hand. “Wow, thanks, man,” I exclaimed. I was just about to take a refreshing sip when the bartender turned to her next customer and the giant reached over and snatched the beer right out of my hand, disappearing into the crowd with his contraband triple-header. Disgusted at being a pawn in his scam, I was just about to write off the entire crowd as another bunch of drunken sports assholes, when another stranger approached. He insisted that my son must have his own Vancouver Canadians cap. Without hesitation, he whipped out his wallet, paid for a brand new hat and slapped it on my son’s head, then disappeared into the crowd. The kind gesture instantly nullified the big guy’s beer heist. While the birthday party for my 40-year-old friend Pat Kelly raged on in the final rays of the spectacular setting sun, it became apparent that the actual baseball game was secondary to the merriment on the sidelines throughout the park. The Vancouver Canadians were apparently playing a team called the “Hillsboro Hops.” No one I asked knew or cared where Hillsboro was (I Googled: Hillsboro is a small city/suburb west of Portland, Oregon). Few I asked knew what the score was (I Googled: the Canadians won 3-2) but none of that seemed to matter. It’s all about the atmosphere. And the giant hotdogs. And the dancing groundskeepers. And the extended fireworks display. Oh, and just in case you had any lingering questions about customer service at Nat Bailey? Due to the booze SNAFU in the Hey Y’all zone, Pat Kelly gets to celebrate his birthday (his 40th birthday) all over again: the stadium gave him and his wife Lizzy 50 free tickets as an apology! See you at the AquaSox game, eh? W

Pedal power in Vancouver is poised to get a major push in the coming weeks. The city’s long-promised bike rental network, dubbed Mobi, will be fully rolled out by the end of the summer and will include a network of 1,500 bike rentals offered at 150 docking stations. About 25 stations are currently set up in locations along the seawall and

other major intersections and thoroughfares: West 10th Avenue and Cambie Street, at Granville and Georgia streets and at Beatty and Dunsmuir streets. The first phase of the network will be offered in an area bounded by Arbutus Street, West 16th Avenue and Main Street. A specific start date, however, hasn’t been set. “For an actual launch, one of the key things that we’re looking for is a critical number of those [stations] to be

upright bikes.” Each bike will have seven speeds and a free helmet offered. About 2,600 docking points will be available to accommodate additional trips. Riders will use a card similar to the Compass pass to unlock a bike and return it to a docking station along with the helmet. Start-up membership prices range between $99 and $129, depending on the duration of trips. For more information, see VancouverBikeShare.ca. –Courtesy of theVancouver Courier W

Pastry chef and chocolatier Thierry Busset not only crafts some of the best macarons, truffles and brandy snap tuiles in the city, he also serves a fantastic lunch menu that features a niçoise sandwich, quiche Loraine with thick chunks of bacon and mushrooms, and hot chocolate flavoured with your choice of caramel, Basque chili or hazelnut. Even better, this is the considered one of the finest coffee houses in the city, and the house blend espresso is rumoured to be able to revive both the hungover and the comatose. Ah, patios. As soon as the sun and warmth return to Vancouver, people flock to restaurant patios like migrating Canada geese returning to Lost Lagoon. Patios have come a long way since the early ‘80s, when most were unlicensed and had, on average, a maximum of one or two tables. Even better, the food being offered at restaurants with patios has become laudable in its own right. And, while a few restaurants with patios – especially those close to water – still rest on their geographic laurels, more are trying to throw shade on the views with their edible attractions. My third annual patio feature (see 2014 and 2015 for more options) looks at some of the city’s prettiest – and tastiest – patios.

BEACH BAY CAFÉ

Since executive chef Felix Zhou took over the kitchen here a few months ago, Beach Bay has become a dining destination worthy of visiting even without the stunning views from the patio overlooking English Bay. With the help of senior sous chef Michael Winning, Zhou churns out dishes like the groan-inducing lobster and asparagus, a minimalist pairing that sees butter-poached Nova Scotia lobster paired with buttery shaved asparagus (yes, it’s a wee bit buttery) over a mustard emulsion that saves you from drowning in the afore-mentioned butter. Or, go with the divinely simple radish salad with kalamata “dirt” and almond slivers, drizzled with herbed oil. Bar manager Adrian

ANCORA

Despite the beauty of its large, shady, waterfront patio, it’s really hard to scoff at anything about this restaurant. The concept, Peruvian-Japanese cuisine, is delivered with panache by executive chef Ricardo Valverde and raw chef

Yoshihiro Tabo. Dishes like the Dungeness crab causa, finished with olive emulsion and a runny quail’s egg, are delicious and classic in presentation. More innovative items like the seared scallops with pork belly and peach-jicama salsa, are comforting enough to tempt even the least adventurous eater. I would also highly recommend just coming in to partake of raw items, like the salmon tartare with aji amarillo, the pickled mackerel with sansho pepper, and one of the trio of ceviches. GM and wine director Andrea Vescovi holds the keys to an excellent wine list and cocktails, by new bartender Phillip Karatsyupa, are heavily influenced by craft vodka and sake (sometimes combining the two), as well as several intriguing

variations of the Pisco Sour, the national drink of Peru. Desserts, by pastry chef Amy Lee, range from light coconut custards with mango pearls and passionfruit sorbet to chocolate mousse and gently-spiced piccarones with dulce de leche. T7XX OL-: " 7X;@73T@TT7; " 'M>LJU#2M2M6G>LN

BRIX AND MORTAR

It’s been in operation for more than a decade, and after its massive renovation and restructuring, Brix and Mortar (formerly Brix Wine Bar) now offers not one, but two stunning patios in Yaletown. On one side, there is the glassceiling and brick-walled garden patio accessed from Homer Street, complete with fairy lights and English garden accents. On the

other, a massive open-air patio (covered and heated, natch) overlooks Hamilton Street, perfect for peoplewatching. It would all be nothing, however, without the food and drinks to match. The contemporary Canadian menu features favourites like the lamb bacon salad and the smoked sablefish gnocchi with pinot gris cream. Wines are available by the glass and flight, as well as several featured reserve bottles available by the glass each night, thanks to the Coravin wine system. Sushi is so ubiquitous in Vancouver as to be almost passé, but I never get tired of the beautiful Aburi sushi and innovative fare at this upscale Japanese restaurant that inhabits the former Aqua Riva space at the base of Granville Street, directly on the water. The sweeping views are rather nice, especially on a sunny day, but it’s the pressed salmon or mackerel sushi (among others), topped with thin rounds of jalapeño and seared with the secret Miku sauce, that will bring you back. Need something more hearty? Try the sake and soybraised beef shank with pickled wasabi, the misobaked sablefish with prawn tempura, or the massive chilled seafood platters. BC’s emerging wine regions Michaela Morris By the Bottle

@MichaelaWine

One of the best thing about living in BC is having vines in our own backyard. We’ve practically been weaned on our local juice and wine tripping has become a classic summer activity. The Okanagan Valley is well-trodden. Those in the know head to the Similkameen. Both Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands offer quaint getaways. And the Fraser Valley makes for a quick and easy excursion from downtown Vancouver. Wineries are popping up in every nook and cranny with the web of BC’s vineyard area continuing to expand north and east. Heading to Lillooet, Kamloops or Shuswap? They’ve got you covered. These emerging wine regions tend more to the extremes with hotter days, colder nights and an even shorter season, but there are a few brave souls who are up for the grapegrowing challenge. With just one officially licensed winery to date, Lil-

In fact, my first question to Fort Berens co-owners Rolf de Bruin and Heleen Pannekoek was why (on earth) they came all the way from Holland plant grapes here. Lillooet, which is one of BC’s hottest spots in the summer had no track record for grape growing. Looking to escape the corporate rat race, they moved to Canada looking

for a better environment to raise a family. They also had their hearts set on winemaking but land prices in the Okanagan had become prohibitive. Harry McWatters (ex-Sumac Ridge), who is actually working on his own project in Lillooet, advised them that the area had potential.

CRAFT BEER

I’ve, like, really had it with Molson. Here’s why. Stephen Smysnuik The Growler @TheGrowlerBC

I’m being disingenuous with that headline, because I’d actually “had it” with Molson the very first time I barfed it all up, because Canadian tastes so repulsive. But this time, they’ve gone and made it personal. Here’s the story: This is three weeks ago. I’m at the Imperial to see Shabazz Palaces perform as part of Levitation Festival. I’d loaded up earlier on Pabst Blue Ribbon at a buddy’s house (don’t ask), and I was excited to drink at least one good beer. And the Imperial typically has good beer. Now, I’m not really snooty about beer, but I loathe terrible beer. When terrible is all that’s available, I’m prone to throwing what my wife calls “tantrums.” I call them “fits,” similar to how I imagine the owner of a Lamborghini might react if he was forced to drive a Pontiac Aztek for a day. Anyway, I was looking forward to the Imperial, which is cinching out the Commodore as the best live venue in Vancouver. The Commodore has the better room, but also arguably the worst beer selection in the city, if not the planet. The Imperial has been

Continued from page 6 Tapping into their pioneering spirit they planted 20 acres in 2009 and have been experimenting ever since. A second vineyard is in the works and they are currently deciding what to plant there. After tasting through their current stable, I have my fingers crossed for Cabernet Franc and Riesling. If you run out of things to do in Whistler, take the scenic two-hour drive on Highway 99 onward to Lillooet and enjoy lunch on Fort Berens’ beautiful outdoor terrace overlooking the vineyards. Executive Chef Dylan Foss sources as much as he can locally and manages to come up with creative clean-flavoured dishes. Another two hours east, the Kamloops Wine Trail taps into a bit of the Wild West history. Offering a whopping four wineries, it’s reminiscent of the Okanagan in its early days. All four are sourcing some of their fruit from Vernon or points further south in the Okanagan. However, Harper’s Trail is working towards making wine from grapes completely from their vineyard on the bank of the South Thompson River. Of the estate wines,

Westender.com

a haven for people who are snooty about music and beer. So imagine my dismay when I walk to the bar, and see not the varied selection I’d expected, but an entire wall of backlight emerald green behind the bar. Nothing but Heineken. All Heineken, everywhere.

Every major venue in the city seems beholden to these Big Brand beer contracts – for what? The bartender informs me that Molson has sponsored the event tonight, and what I see is what I get. So I ordered a Heineken and I drank two-thirds of it, because like anything Molson-related, the final third tasted as if a goat had swam in it, pissed in it, then gave birth in it. And then I ordered another. And I was angry. I was angry at Molson for interfering with my, and my beer-loving brethren’s ability to enjoy a good beer at an awesome show. I was angry that Molson tried to mask its sponsorship by serving only Heineken. As if Molson’s brand managers knew the Levitation crowd the Cabernet Franc stands out. Lighter weight than Okanagan examples, the 2014 is a chillable, chuggable style that clocks in at a refreshingly moderate 12.2 per cent. The Pioneer Block Dry Riesling is also welldone. Be forewarned though, it’s not completely dry as the label suggests but is still wellbalanced with mouthwatering acidity. The most unlikely of places is Shuswap. North of the Okanagan, this cooler area has attracted a handful of restless retirees who clearly aren’t ready to stop working hard. It‘s not the place to come looking for Cabernet Sauvignon or even Pinot Noir. Plantings are mostly German crossings such as Ortega, Optima, Siegerrebe and Madeleine Angevine along with hybrids like Maréchal Foch which can all be relied on to fully ripen and survive the cold. After cruising the lakes on a house boat, you can choose between seven wineries to get a taste of these. It’s early days for the folks in these nascent areas. Most are still experimenting to determine which grapes will work best. I predict plenty more novelties ahead as our still young wine industry continues to evolve. W

would be too sophisticated to sell Canadian too, what with their keen musical tastes and fashionable jeans. It was then that I noticed the massive inflatable pillar on stage left, emblazoned with the Red Bull logo, which seemed weird. Levitation celebrates psychedelic and outsider music, which by nature is anti-commercial and countercultural. Granted, Levitation likely wouldn’t exist without this kind of corporate sponsorship, which would be fine if these corporations weren’t in this case restricting the beer supply and selling only mediocre beer. This is in no way an isolated occurrence. The week before, legions of Facebook friends were complaining about the dismal beer selection at The Cure concert at Deer Lake Park. Every major venue in the city seems beholden to these Big Brand beer contracts – for what? Fear that they’ll lose out on beer sales if patrons are unfamiliar with the brands? No! People will drink the beer no matter what (obviously), and if you give them some not terrible choices they’ll be more likely to go

back for seconds. What’s it going to take for these big venues to get some bloody decent beer on tap? My wife, if she were with me, would have thought I was overreacting as usual, but I don’t think I was. Good beer is a small part of what can make or break an experience. Every event that we’ve ever been a part of – a concert, a football game, a backyard

barbecue – has been elevated by the quality of what was available there:Was the music good? Was the company enjoyable? Was the food tasty? This all adds to the personal experience. It’s fundamental to event planning. If the beer’s shit at a concert, those brands are responsible for diminishing our ability to have the best time possible.

So I’m sipping this syrupy Heineken, just obsessing over this issue and before I know it, the show’s over. I’m drunk and disappointed because I can’t remember a single song Shabazz Palaces played. Naturally, I blame Molson for this and now they’re in my bad books. A curse on your house, Molson! W

Studio Vostok: The underground is rising ALLAN MACINNIS @westendervan

On first blush, Studio Vostok – located in a disused retail space in Chinatown, at 246 Keefer – reminds one of classic East Hastings underground locations: those small, off-the-grid venues for local metal, punk and noise events that spring up in abandoned offices and such. With names like the Emergency Room or, indeed, the Secret Location, such spaces usually exist for a limited time only, before the rigours of No Fun City catch up. But that’s only how it looks on the surface. Studio Vostok is aboveground, and proprietors Mitch Ray and Taya Fraser plan “as much as possible” to meet city bylaws and get all required permits and licenses. They borrow at least one aspect from the underground aesthetic, however: the address of the venue, while not a secret, isn’t visible on gig posters, and may take just a little bit of insider knowledge or effort to find. “It just looks tacky on a poster,” Fraser says, sitting at a table at Vostok, where the two have been cleaning up after a successful launch party last month. “If people are actually interested in the shows, if they’re interested in the space, they’ll come, they just have to do the work [to find out where it is].” Ray picks up the thought. “I think by not concealing the address, but by making them work just a little bit,

you attract people who are more invested in the music community, and less likely to be assholes” – meaning people more interested in alcohol and causing trouble than checking out the bands.Which is a valid concern, because “if you are running a DIY venue” - even aboveground – “there’s a risk of getting shut down, always.” “The only way we’re going to stay active is if people respect the neighbourhood,” adds Fraser. “The neighbours, the space, the landlord, everything. Like, you have to actually give a shit about the space to come here!” As part of the collective Art Signified, the two have been booking shows these last three years. “We’ve probably done over 300 shows, since we’ve been operational,” Ray recounts. “And it’s all over the map. It could be metal, punk, jazz, funk, acoustic: everything. Our thing is everything, as long as it’s good.” They’ll continue to promote shows as Art Signified, at venues like the Astoria, the Cobalt, the Rickshaw, Lanalou’s, or elsewhere – but they also plan two or three shows per month at Studio Vostok. “That’s all we can do by the licenses,” Ray explains. “You’re allowed three per month, or 24 in a year; on average two per month.” The two also plan things like “art exhibits or any sort of idea that people come up with, of how to use this space. We don’t see this as a conventional space in any way. It’s

Film screenings, music video production ideas…” “Ninjaspy just filmed their music video in our basement,” Fraser chimes in. “Because it’s an open space, we can configure the room however we want, depending on the event,” Ray offers. “We’d like to get to the point where there’s something here every single night and every single day. Baring it all on the air

KELSEY KLASSEN @kelseyklassen

Emelia Symington Fedy is many things: writer, comedian, yogi, actress. The Chop Theatre co-founder’s select artistic credits include creating a dark comedy about parenting called Motherload, appearing in the Jessie Award-winning play Assembly, and even writing a cover story about Vancouver’s hippest hipsters for this very publication. She can now add radio host to her lengthy resumé with her weekday evening show Trying to be Good on Roundhouse Radio. Based on Symington Fedy’s popular blog of the same name, the show deals with all the things we’d rather not, functioning partially like an advice column and partially like diary. Symington Fedy takes her no-holds-barred approached to blogging and satire, and uses her own outlandish, painful and personal experiences to get her guests to open up. We caught up with the dirty laundress to learn more about the art of baring it all on the air.

8 W July 7 - July 13, 2016

How did you come to join the cast at Roundhouse? So, I’ve had a blog called Trying to be Good that’s been going strong for close to five years now. It’s podcasts and videos and writing, and it’s usually just speaking about my own personal experiences with something. It might be about feminism, it might be about parenting. And, in the blog, I’m the clown. I’m the person asking the questions that everyone asks – or wants to ask – but is a bit too shy to ask. I put myself in the vulnerable position of asking the kind of stupid questions so that we all culturally can maybe learn. And, long story short, there is a producer at Roundhouse Radio who loves my work who brought me in. So it went from writing form to live conversation, which is so fascinating and wonderful.

And how does that take shape? My secret goal in every interview is to see, “How close can I get? How intimate can we get in this conversation?” For example, this one recent guest we were talking about her mu-

sical career as a hip-hop artist, and then we got into her recent diagnosis with MS. And then we got into her beliefs around God and death. So we just kept going deeper and deeper. Having these guests who are really willing to open their hearts and souls, completely candidly, I think they’re able to because I do it, too. And we have this really intimate, brave conversation on live radio, which is pretty rare, I think. Have any of your guests ever been

We’re willing to work within the budget of whatever people have – it’s totally flexible. We come from a background of putting on events where what drove us crazy was having to work within the guidelines that a certain venue has, like: you can’t come in at this time, you have to have this done by that time, this is the fee for this, this is the fee for that. We want to remove that and be flexible, which is what we wanted from other spaces total flexibility, and very artistminded.” The two have had lots of community support - from

donated hours from various volunteers, getting the venue up and running, to a PA lent to them by former Scratch Records honcho Keith Parry, who used to put on shows at the Interurban.Their friend April-Lee Rivera Johnson – of the bands Passive, Career Opportunities, and Want – designed their logo and the mural to the left of the stage. “She’s probably our main artistic collaborator,” Ray says. Studio Vostok has lots in the works, though July shows haven’t been confirmed at press time. The next gig Ray and Fraser have scheduled in

the space that they can actually talk about is Peregrine Falls and Molten Lava on Aug. 5.The Studio Vostok and Art Signified Facebook pages should have plenty more information before that time, however. In the meantime, there’s still work to be done on the space. “The essentials are done, it’s just adding little bits and pieces as our resources build up,” Mitch says. “We have to make money from shows to be able to afford to do shit, so we’ve got to build it up as we go.” W

too uncomfortable to continue? That’s a good question. And I say at the beginning of the conversation that, “You’re in charge. Anything I say that you don’t want to talk about, just tell me you don’t want to talk about.” It’s really straight-up and honest. Sometimes I’ll say, “I’m going to ask you a question right now, it might be really intense, and you don’t have to go there.” For example, I had a woman on who hears voices, and struggles with multiple mental illness diagnoses, and so

I wanted her to tell the particular story of finding herself standing in a train station, not knowing how she got there, preaching the Bible. Like, kind of a vulnerable thing for her to expose, she’s kind of a big deal in the theatre community, so I asked her on air, are you willing to go there. And she was like, “Hell yeah, let’s go.” And the listener is getting this in real time. Like, she could have told me no and we would have been kind of stuck for a moment [laughs].

I think I’ve always been a bit of a brash one. But the truth is for me is it’s an active choice to put myself in the position of the clown, the innocent, asking the questions, pointing out that I think the emperor is wearing no clothes. I think it’s a political act. I’m doing it for the purpose of change making. For example, I had a yogi on, and we were talking about the privilege of being able to eat meat, and how in this society, the way the world is going, maybe we should all be vegetarian. And I kind of put forward the thought that if you can’t afford really sustainable, healthy, happy meat, maybe you shouldn’t be eating it. And then she slammed me and said that is so classist. That is such a classist, privileged thing to say. And so I put forth that question intentionally, so that she would have the opportunity to educate us all in that moment about classism. It’s a subtle form, and I use it in my theatre work too, of being political. But it’s in a way that the audience can laugh. They don’t feel judged. They think I’m kind of the dumb one. But then they go home and they think about it. ) $&%+ "!*+#!+',+%-.&( W

How did you become this person who feels so comfortable being exposed?

FILM & TV

Sibling drama with a bro’d trip twist

Locally-made ‘When the Ocean Met the Sky’ winning film fest awards across the globe Sabrina Furminger Reel People

@Sabrinarmf

There’s a reason that filmmakers keep sending their characters on road trips: it makes for mighty gripping cinema. Take a group of people who hate each other, and yank them out of their comfort zones and into a cramped car careening down a bumpy road to a hazy, high-stakes destination. Sooner or later (usually after a string of disasters), long-standing tensions boil to the surface and the characters find something that could have only found on the road: peace, reconciliation, closure, mad love, or some combination thereof. Cue acoustic ballad; roll credits. If it sounds like a formula, that’s because it is – but it’s the kind of formula that can be used a million times and take audiences on a million different journeys, many of them satisfying and revelatory. When the Ocean Met the Sky is one such satisfying and revelatory road trip movie. The locally made feature stars Aren Buchholz (When Calls the Heart), Phillip Thomas, and Spencer Foley as three estranged brothers who reluctantly convene after the tragic deaths of their parents. A lawyer quickly informs the brothers that a substantial inheritance awaits each one of them – so long as they embark on a difficult journey into the British Columbia wilderness to a mysterious

REVIEW // THE LEGEND OF TARZAN

Starring Alexander Skarsgård, Margot Robbie Directed by David Yates Not even Alexander Skarsgård’s rippling abs can deter Tarzan’s latest on-screen iteration from landing with a collective thud. The iconic character, created by pulp author Edgar Rice Burroughs (also of John Carter fame) in 1912, works best as a magazine serial hero but struggles to find footing and relevance with today’s audiences. The Legend of Tarzan begins later in the adventurer’s life when he

Vancouver buds Phillip Thomas and Spencer Foley wrote and star in When the Ocean Met the Sky. Contributed photo destination of their mom and dad’s choosing. And they have to take this trip together (accompanied by a stoner guide, played by Terry Field), or no one gets a dime. When the Ocean Met the Sky – which was directed by Lukas Huffman and filmed in Squamish, Ucluelet, Tofino and Vancouver – has done exceptionally well on the film festival circuit. To date, it’s garnered 12 audience awards at 18 international fests, as well as a nomination for Best Canadian Film on the Toronto International Film Festival’s Film Circuit. On July 12, the bro-drama will join the ranks of iTunes and VOD. When the Ocean Met the Sky was co-written by two of the three on-screen brothers, Foley and Thomas. The Vancouver duo were inspired by Jay and Mark Duplass’ 2005 indie hit The is already an established English noble enjoying the buttoned-down life with the lovely Jane (Robbie). Tarzan’s backstory is revealed through a series of flashbacks, which are well-placed at first but soon grow tedious and generic. It will come as a surprise to no one that he is lured back into the jungle after George Washington Williams – an actual American Civil War soldier, played here by Samuel L. Jackson – raises concerns about slave labour in the mines of the Belgiancontrolled Congo. The team sets out to investigate and it’s not long before Jane is taken hostage by the nefarious Captain Leon

Puffy Chair, in which the main character drives across America to deliver a vintage recliner to his father and finds hilarity and personal truths along the way. The Duplass Brothers made The Puffy Chair for $15,000, and went on to screen at Sundance and South by Southwest. This ilk of DIY film journey was highly attractive to Foley and Thomas. “We looked at each other and said, ‘well, we have me and you, we both act, we both write,’” says Foley. “So we thought, ‘why don’t we write a movie about brothers?’” Foley and Thomas aren’t brothers in real-life, but they are best friends, and so focusing on brotherhood wasn’t a stretch. “Everyone can relate to family,” says Foley. “Everyone has brothers or sisters or parents, and everyone has different dynamics within that.” Rom (Christoph Waltz). The rest plays out utterly predictably with plenty of vine-swinging, gorillapunching, and scenerychewing. Unfortunately, the film offers very little new ground not already covered in the numerous Tarzan adaptations preceding it. Skarsgård and Robbie are effective but Jackson is reduced to one-liners and two-time Oscar winner Waltz is once again reduced to a one-dimensional villain. Mix in some unconvincing CGI with a painfully pedestrian script and The Legend of Tarzan fails to capture the wonder beheld in his former glory on the page. –Thor Diakow

They wrangled their other best friend, Buchholz, to fill the role of the youngest brother. Filming a road trip movie can be challenging, and a little

method. You’ve got to go on an actual road trip in order to film your fictional one. While When the Ocean Met the Sky’s off-camera road trip wasn’t as fraught as the scripted one, it did begin rather dramatically. On the first morning of shooting, their primary production vehicle died on the ramp to the ferry. “I was in the car behind them and I said, ‘You have got to be kidding me. Is this a sign from somewhere that we shouldn’t be doing this movie?’” Foley chuckles at the memory. There were a couple more vehicle breakdowns, and other standard road trip drama. The rain was relentless; cast and crew were soaked to the bone every day, and “every day, every emotion under the sun was felt by all of us,” says Foley. Even the actors had to pitch in to get shit done. “We had such a small crew of 12, and everyone was doing everything,” says Foley. “I was carrying generators up the hills and we were all carrying lights. It was a team effort in every way. When we started filming, the sweat that you saw on-screen was our real sweat.”

But every bead of sweat was worth it, because Foley and co. got to play out their story in picture-perfect locales. “BC is the most beautiful place on Earth,” he says. “We’re spoiled. We see the beauty every day, but when [non-residents] see it onscreen, they’re really wowed by the backdrop.” For Foley, the most meaningful moment of the filmmaking journey occurred after a When the Ocean Met the Sky screening in Montreal, when “a French-Canadian man stood up and started crying, and in broken English he said that he hadn’t spoken to his brother in 10 years, and he was about to go call him after our movie.” Later, outside the theatre, Foley spotted the man engaged in an emotional conversation on his phone. “It was powerful,” says Foley. “That’s why we make movies: moments like that.” W 7 When the Ocean Met the Sky D.(( %8 ','.('%(8 ;> .6->82 %83.>>.>3 1-(A FE&

has interesting articles that feature artists. I also like Awesomer.com, which is more of a mix of art, design, movies, and technology.

Jennifer Scott A Good Chick to Know

@Jennifer_AGCTK

If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing? I’m interested in vintage road bikes and cars. I have about 15, mostly Italian, road bikes from the mid ‘80s to the mid ‘60s. Some of them I’ve restored (which is a hobby of mine) and other’s are in their original conditions. I’ve also restored an old Mercedes 230 SL Roadster, and an SE 280 coupe. If you could make a living racing vintage cars, I would do that for a living.

In Home Is Where The Art Is, we usually tour the works and studios of our city’s top fine artists. This week, however, I wanted to explore the craft of a creative studio that heavily impacts the relationship between art and its place in our homes.Tucked into the heart of Parker Studios, Harrison Art Services (HarrisonArtServices.com) creates the space for the art we choose to hold our focus through custom framing, restoration and professional installation. Owner David Harrision has made it his life’s work to give works of art a new life. Tell us a little about yourself and your craft. There is a history of art in my family and it is very much our family business. When I was eight years old, I started learning the craft of art restoration from my father, who studied at Frost & Reed, until I was eventually mentored by a graduate of The Courtauld Institute of Art who worked for my father and helped me develop

In 1994, I took over my father Alex’s business, which consisted of art and antique restoration as well as art services like framing, installation, delivery and the storage of art. Jean therapy: doing denim differently Aileen Lalor Style File @AileenLalor

Denim jeans will never stop being staples – they’re comfy, go with everything, and flatter everyone. But they’re a no-no on most office dress codes, and blimey, in the summer months, they’re blooming hot. In the past few seasons, different forms of denim, like overalls, pinafores and jean jackets, have become popular. On spring/summer

2016 runways and into fall/ winter, things went a step further. Pieces lost jean-like accoutrements such as studs and buttons, becoming lighter and more fluid, and there was everything from off-the-shoulder tops to kimonos. “It’s great to see brands elevating their craftsmanship to meet the tastes and demands of sophisticated and astute female customers,” says Eric Dickstein, founder and owner of denim designer and retailer Dutil. For those who feel denim is still too heavy or informal

looking, Dickstein suggests chambray, which is typically lighter, softer and less rugged, but still has the classic mottled blue/white look. Here are our denim and chambray picks for right now – everything from dresses to a fabulous nail polish. You could even wear them all together without anyone uttering the words “Canadian Tuxedo.”

1. DRESS CODE

Japanese denim is the best in the world because it’s tightly woven and uses only natural dyes. Canadian brand Naked & Famous’s Bubble Dress is made from its luxury Japanese denim – 100 per cent cotton so it’s light and breathable. Dress it up with jewellery and heels, or wear with flat sandals or sneakers. $135, at Dutil Denim and DutilDenim.com

Denim accessories get a bad rap because they’re perceived as trashy. This season, designers got it right – bags were embellished, while shoes were simple and elegant. For a runway fresh look, there’s Stella McCartney’s chain metal, starspattered Falabella pouch ($847.45, at Nordstrom). Vintage fans should check out Lanvin’s charcoal denim

Is there something you wish more people would check out in your studio/ about your services? People who know us for our art restoration work don’t always know that we offer installation, framing, transport, and storage services. Conversely, our clients who know us for installation and framing are not always aware that we also do art restoration and the wide array of works that we can restore. I guess just exploring the full range of offerings we can provide to artists and art collectors. W

pumps ($225 at Mine & Yours and MineAndYours.com).

3. OVER AND OVER

When it’s too warm for a coat or sweater, but you still need a cover-up, throw on Ali Golden’s linen coat in blue chambray. It’s ultralight, loose without being sloppy, and you can wear it with or without a belt. $276, at Still Life Boutique and StillLifeBoutique.com.

4. TALON SHOW

We love blue nail polish but are tired of navy and baby. CND’s Denim Patch is aptly named with its cool greyish tone. It’s available in the brand’s seven-day Vinylux formulation ($12.50, see CND.com for stockists), and in 14-day shellac (at salons including Onyx Aesthetics, OnyxAestheticsStudio.ca). W

So you have started the journey into a healthier lifestyle, you are packing all the whole foods you didn’t even know existed into your daily diet, you even shop at the farmers market from time to time. This new lifestyle of yours might even have you going to the gym or some sort of yoga class, helping you have a better understanding of why people wear yoga tights as pants (range of motion of course, cause you never know when you are going to need to show off your downward dog or break out into a spontaneous squat

while waiting for the bus). Or maybe you are just an avid foodie that is conscious about what you put in your food hole. Being “healthy” has become an obsession of sorts, and with all the contradicting, overwhelming information out there, it’s easy to get confused or be roped in to an unnecessary fad. For example eating gluten-free doesn’t make you better than anyone else or healthier, it’s a diet made for people with a gluten allergy/sensitivity. Or maybe your guru suggested you juice everything or even drink your own urine (Yes, this is a thing. No, don’t do it). There is no one diet that cures all, and no matter what, you will inevitably find yourself in a situation where your new diet isn’t catered to.You might panic at the idea of getting invited out to eat at a restaurant or friend’s house that isn’t in your now regular healthy food domain. But don’t worry, you don’t need to settle for a piece of lettuce drizzled with olive oil (although that sounds good too), help is here! Here are some basic tips to help you stay healthy while eating out:

EAT UNTIL YOU FEEL SATISFIED, NOT FULL

Avoid stuffing yourself! Be aware of what you are eating and how you feel. Take smaller bites of food and remember to chew, chew, chew.

CHEW YOUR FOOD

Digestion starts in the mouth; the act of chewing not only breaks down our food to smaller particles to swallow but it secretes saliva which coats the food with enzymes that begin to digest fats and starches right in your mouth. Even if your chicken burger isn’t freerange and organic, help your body out with the digestion process.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

Are you hungry or just thirsty? This is a good question to ask yourself when hunger strikes a little too often. When you find yourself feeling hungry, have a glass of water and see if this satisfies you.You may be surprised by the results.

RESEARCH THE MENU

Look at the menu ahead of time so you can plan out your meal. Because of my dietary restrictions I always do this before I go out, generally if they don’t have too many options of something that you can eat, they are OK with substitutes and swapping items throughout the menu. And know that there is nothing wrong with a salad with protein, especially if it’s local, which is all the rage here in Vancouver.

80/20 RULE

Let yourself indulge once and awhile. If you are eating a whole foods, nutrient-

dense diet most of the time that your body will know what to do with the extra crap and calories you have on cheap beer and wings night at the legion (I don’t know if the legion actually has a cheap wing and beer night, but if they don’t they should!) Most restaurants are pretty good about catering to your dietary needs, after all they want you to spend your money there. And if you really aren’t sure or are uncomfortable, then snack before you go out.You don’t have to give up fun to be healthy. W

SEX

Free Will Astrology By Rob Brezsny Events in the coming week may trick your mind and tweak your heart. They might mess with your messiah complex and wreak havoc on your habits. But I bet they will also energize your muses and add melodic magic to your mysteries. They will slow you down in such a way as to speed up your evolution, and spin you in circles with such lyrical grace that you may become delightfully clear-headed. Will you howl and moan? Probably, but more likely out of poignant joy, not from angst and anguish. Might you be knocked off course? Perhaps, but by a good influence, not a bad one.

In the book A Survival Guide to the Stress of Organizational Change, the authors tell you how to raise your stress levels. Assume that others are responsible for lowering your stress levels, they say. Resolve not to change anything about yourself. Hold on to everything in your life that’s expendable. Fear the future. Get embroiled in trivial battles. Try to win new games as you play by old rules. Luckily, the authors also offer suggestions on how to reduce your stress. Get good sleep, they advise. Exercise regularly. Don’t drink too much caffeine. Feel lots of gratitude. Clearly define a few strong personal goals, and let go of lesser wishes. Practice forgiveness and optimism. Talk to yourself with kindness. Got all that, Taurus? It’s an excellent place to start as you formulate your strategy for the second half of 2016.

Normally I’m skeptical about miraculous elixirs and sudden cures and stupendous breakthroughs. I avoid fantasizing about a “silver bullet” that can simply and rapidly repair an entrenched problem. But I’m setting aside my caution as I evaluate your prospects for the coming months. While I don’t believe that a sweeping transformation is guaranteed, I suspect it’s far more likely than usual. I suggest you open your mind to it.

As I gaze into my crystal ball and invoke a vision of your near future, I find you communing with elemental energies that are almost beyond your power to control. But I’m not worried, because I also see that the spirit of fun is keeping you safe and protected. Your playful strength is fully unfurled, ensuring that love always trumps chaos. This is a dream come true: You have a joyous confidence as you explore and experiment with the Great Unknown, trusting in your fluidic intuition to guide you.

“You can only go halfway into the darkest forest,” says a Chinese proverb. “Then you are coming out the other side.” You will soon reach that midpoint, Leo. You may not recognize how far you have already come, so it’s a good thing I’m here to give you a heads-up. Keep the faith! Now here’s another clue: As you have wandered through the dark forest, you’ve been learning practical lessons that will come in handy during the phase of your journey that will begin after your birthday.

My devoted contingent of private detectives, intelligence agents, and psychic sleuths is constantly wandering the globe gathering data for me to use in creating your horoscopes. In recent days, they have reported that many of you Virgos are seeking expansive visions and mulling long-term decisions. Your tribe seems unusually relaxed about the future, and is eager to be emancipated from shrunken possibilities. Crucial in this wonderful development has been an inclination to stop obsessing on small details and avoid being distracted by transitory concerns. Hallelujah! Keep up the good work. Think BIG! BIGGER! BIGGEST!

After years of painstaking research, the psychic surgeons at the Beauty and Truth Lab have finally perfected the art and science of Zodiac Makeovers. Using a patented technique known as Mythic Gene Engineering, they are able to transplant the planets of your horoscope into different signs and astrological houses from the ones you were born with. Let’s say your natal Jupiter suffers from an uncongenial aspect with your Moon. The psychic surgeons cut and splice according to your specifications, enabling you to be re-coded with the destiny you desire. Unfortunately, the cost of this pioneering technology is still prohibitive for most people. But here’s the good news, Libra: In the coming months, you will have an unprecedented power to reconfigure your life’s path using other, less expensive, purely natural means.

In high school I was a good athlete with a promising future as a baseball player. But my aspirations were aborted in sophomore year when the coach banished me from the team. My haircut and wardrobe were too weird, he said. I may have been a skillful shortstop, but my edgy politics made him nervous and mad. At the time I was devastated by his expulsion. Playing baseball was my passion. But in retrospect I was grateful. The coach effectively ended my career as a jock, steering me toward my true callings: poetry and music and astrology. I invite you to identify a comparable twist in your own destiny, Scorpio. What unexpected blessings came your way through a seeming adversary? The time is ripe to lift those blessings to the next level.

Do you remember that turning point when you came to a fork in the road of your destiny at a moment when your personal power wasn’t strong? And do you recall how you couldn’t muster the potency to make the most courageous choice, but instead headed in the direction that seemed easier? Well, here’s some intriguing news: Your journey has delivered you, via a convoluted route, to a place not too far from that original fork in the road. It’s possible you could return there and revisit the options – which are now more mature and meaningful – with greater authority. Trust your exuberance.

I love writing horoscopes for you. Your interest in my insights spurs my creativity and makes me smarter. As I search for the inspiration you need next, I have to continually reinvent my approach to finding the truth. The theories I had about your destiny last month may not be applicable this month. My devotion to following your ever-shifting story keeps me enjoyably off-balance, propelling me free of habit and predictability. I’m grateful for your influence on me! Now I suggest that you compose a few thank-you notes similar to the one I’ve written here. Address them to the people in your life who move you and feed you and transform you the best.

Lets bring back public humiliation for predators Sex with Mish Way

@MyszkaWay

Sometimes I really miss Dateline NBC’s To Catch A Predator. If you are still in college right now, you probably won’t remember this legendary show. Hosted by Chris Hansen, To Catch A Predator worked to bust men for arranging sex with underage boys and girls in online chatrooms. Using decoys (full grown adults who have really tiny bodies and voices), Dateline would monitor online chats between the predator and his “prey,” then when he finally made the big step to go meet the child in person, Hansen would be waiting there at the house to read the transcripts of the illegal conversation – “‘I want to BLANK your BLANK while your little BLANKS bounce around,’ did you write this to a 14-year-old, sir?” – while the busted fool crumbled in fear thinking Hansen was his love interest’s father. The cameras were hidden, so only some men knew exactly what was happening once they recognized Hansen’s handsome face. Others, like the legendary perp who was caught twice in one week, were clueless. After a primetime hour of questioning, the perps would be able to leave. Of course, police were always waiting outside to arrest the man upon exit. The show is not supposed to be funny at all. Pedophiles and molesters all deserve to be jailed, tossed away, all of that. However, when Hansen would

walk into the room and shock the predator while throwing in one of his zippy opening lines, you couldn’t help but laugh. A predator was caught, no child was ever harmed, and the only person who walked out slightly scathed was the decoy (that is, if the perp tried to give her a hug). My personal favourite was when Hansen would come around the corner with his stack of paper transcripts and ask the man, “No hug for me?” I always wondered why these busted perps would sign release forms to allow their sorry mugs to be down on television. It turns out no such releases are needed to be signed by the subjects because this was not a reality show like COPS or Honey Boo Boo, but officially a news report, and news reports do not require talent releases. Dateline NBC was using a technicality to their full advantage. Smart. The men who drove for hours only to be busted by Hansen and Dateline NBC only made the episode that much more of a victory. Irrationally, I always felt bad for the slightly handicapped men, or the ones who were clearly mentally ill.The 25-year-old rockers and military staff sergeants, I sure did not. I liked it when they were being interrogated by Hansen and yet “needed to pee since Nashville.” Recently, a 37-year-old man from Waterloo, Canada, created his own underage sexual relationship that I wish had been intercepted by Hansen and the decoys. Ala El Bashatly had started an af-

fair with a 14-year-old girl in Indiana through the famous adultery site, Ashley Madison (“Life is Short. Have An Affair.”). Bashatly was arrested outside a JCPenny at a Fort Wayne shopping mall after police had gathered substantial evidence that he had driven from Canada, on multiple occasions, to have sex with the minor. The girl’s father found out about the affair when he asked his daughter to borrow $20, and she had a whole $200 in her hand. When he asked where she got that, she revealed that a friend who she was sleeping with had given it to her when she thought she might be pregnant. The money was “for baby clothes.” The father reported this to the police and the rest of the story unfolded. The couple first had sex at home, while the girl’s mother was at work and the next time at a hotel. Apparently, the girl told Bashatly that she “wanted to become pregnant” and he encouraged it, even giving her money for pregnancy tests. Obviously, most of their flirting was done online. FBI got contact of the girl’s email account and a few months later, they busted Bashatly at the mall. Sadly Bashatly was just a small blip in the news. I wish Chris Hansen had been there to sucker punch you with a one-liner before they toted your ass off to jail. W

After an Illinois man’s wife whacked him in the neck with a hatchet, he didn’t hold a grudge. Just the opposite. Speaking from a hospital room while recovering from his life-threatening wound, Thomas Deas testified that he still loved his attacker, and hoped they could reconcile. Is this admirable or pathetic? I’ll go with pathetic. Forgiving one’s allies and loved ones for their mistakes is wise, but allowing and enabling their maliciousness and abuse should be taboo. Keep that standard in mind during the coming weeks, Aquarius. People close to you may engage in behavior that lacks full integrity. Be compassionate but tough-minded in your response.

Can water run uphill? Not usually. But there’s an eccentric magic circulating in your vicinity, and it could generate phenomena that are comparable to water running uphill. I wouldn’t be surprised, either, to see the equivalent of stars coming out in the daytime. Or a mountain moving out of your way. Or the trees whispering an oracle exactly when you need it. Be alert for anomalous blessings, Pisces. They may be so different from what you think is possible that they could be hard to recognize.
