spreading E. coli and ignoring all the “No dogs” signs. And, no, it is not the people setting up temporary shelters living on the beaches. The new epidemic in the West End is cigarette butts. They are everywhere. Cigarette butts include chemicals such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, nitrogen oxides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, ammonia, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, benzene, phenol, argon, pyridines and acetone, over 50 of which are known to be carcinogenic to humans. Cigarette butts can leach chemicals such as cadmium,

The new epidemic in the West End is not all the drunks and screaming girls on English Bay Beach at night after the park is closed at 10pm (and why does the Park Board allows this – see Grant Lawrence’s excellent article in the June 30th edition). No, it is not all the street garbage all over the place, especially around the new bus benches. No, it is not the fighting and the drinking. No, it is not all the unsafe bicyclers going through stop signs and red lights. No, it is not all the dogs on the beaches

CAN’T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS

Re:“I’ve, like, really had it with Molson. Here’s why.”The Growler, July 7, 2016. So, you’re OK with the big breweries spending tens of thousands in sponsorship money to make these festivals possible, but you fly into a huff when the sponsor actually tries to do something with that sponsorship? Talk about entitled. I’m no fan of big beer, but having been on the event side of things, sponsorship contributions from big companies are essential to the making festivals possible. lead and arsenic into our environment within an hour of contact with water. But then, it hardly rains in Vancouver so not big deal, right? A prime example is the park at the corner of Cardero and Burnaby, which has become the neighbourhood’s ashtray (not to mention the garbage thrown all over the place by the people that sit on the benches). Solution: put your butts into your cigarette package after smoking and throw your butts away in a garbage bin. I know people who do this and good for them – but that would be

less than one per cent of smokers. –Anti-Butt Head

YOUR CITY CITY SHORTS // VANCOUVER VOWS TO HAVE VACANT HOME TAX BY NEXT YEAR

One week after homeowners had to shell out the balance of their property taxes, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson announced initial steps the city and province are taking to implement a tax intended to temper the city’s white-hot housing market. Monday’s announcement came hours after provincial finance minister Mike de Jong said the legislature will convene for a summer sitting on July 25 to enable Vancouver to enact the measures. “[Housing] is a crisis right now,” Robertson said. “So far we’re not seeing any specific delivery. We’re seeing some initial steps, which is a positive thing, but we need a lot more follow through. We’re going to need significant action to address the market that has basically taken the option for home ownership, and even rental, away from many people in our city.” Robertson offered few specifics Monday, other than to suggest a vacant home will be defined as being empty for 12 months per year. At what rates those properties will be taxed remains to be determined, though any funds that come back to the city will be earmarked for affordable housing measures and creating incentives for

GOVERNMENT’S FOREIGN BUYER NUMBERS WAY OFF

A provincial government statement that only 3 per cent of BC residential sales are made to foreign buyers and that Chinese nationals represent just 2.5 per cent of Metro Vancouver home buyers drew rolling eyeballs and laughter at the packed July 7 Asia Real Estate Association of America (AREAA) conference in downtown Vancouver. “No. Absolutely not,” said an incredulous Byron Burley, Shanghai-based vicepresident of Chinese-language Juwaii.com, China’s largest foreign residential real estate search engine. “It is way, way higher than

that.” Burley noted that millions of Chinese nationals use his site, which has from 3,000 to 5,000 residential listings from BC at any time. “My intuition says it has to be much higher [than 3 per cent],” said Michael North of the Asia Pacific Network Foundation, “just based on the number of people and the number of deals being done at this conference.” North, COO of Hawaiibased Pacific Royalties, which specializes in linking North American real estate with Asian buyers, had just finished telling the conference that “a next wave of Chinese buyers” was about to crash into the Vancouver market. “The rollout is accelerating,” North said, citing the recent expansion of China’s Qualified Domestic Institutional Investor program that encourages wealthy residents of China to invest in

foreign real estate and stock markets. “I would like to know where the BC government is getting their statistics,” said North, who estimated “at least 10 per cent” of Metro Vancouver home buyers are foreign nationals. Finance Minister Mike De Jong said the information was based on residential sales during a near threeweek period in June, which began as the province began tracking the addresses of all buyers for the first time. According to De Jong, there were 10,148 transactions between June 10 and 29 throughout BC, half of which were in the Lower Mainland. Only 337 of those sales — 3.3 per cent — involved foreign nationals. Vancouver real estate agents were less cautious in their response to the government data. “I would say 50 per cent of house buyers, maybe 60 per cent [are foreigners],” said Eve Chuang of Macdonald Realty. Chuang and other agents at the AREAA conference said it is not the nationality of the buyer but the source of the capital that is important. Money from China, the real estate agents said, can be transferred to a relative with an address in Vancouver, who then acts as the buyer. –Frank O’Brien, Business in Vancouver

The future of hydro in a warming world David Suzuki Science Matters

@DavidSuzuki

People have harnessed energy from moving water for thousands of years. Greeks used various types of water wheels to grind grain in mills more than 2,000 years ago. In the late 1800s, people figured out how to harness the power to produce electricity.Throughout the 20th century and into the 21st, hydropower has expanded, producing about 17 per cent of the world’s electricity by 2014 and about 85 per cent of renewable energy – and it shows no signs of slowing. According to the online magazine WaterWorld, “An expected 3,700 major dams may more than double the total electricity capacity of hydropower to 1,700 GW within the next two decades,” – including in my home province of BC, where the government has started a third dam on the Peace River at Site C. “Hydropower is the most important and widely-used renewable source of energy,” the US Geological Survey says. But how “green” is hydropower, and how viable is it in a warming world with increasing water fluctuations and

Westender.com

shortages? To some extent, it depends on the type of facility. The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions notes some large dams are used mainly for water storage or flood control with power generation an additional function, while some are used primarily to generate electricity. Small hydro such as run-of-river is installed on running water and doesn’t use water stored in reservoirs. Pumped storage facilities don’t generate additional energy, but store energy by pumping water from a lower reservoir to a higher one when demand and price are low, sometimes using renewable energy, and release water through turbines when price and demand are high. All have varying environmental impacts. One of the biggest tradeoffs with large-scale hydro facilities is that building them often means flooding land used for farming and human communities. Damming rivers also impedes fish – even with technologies like fish ladders – and can harm wildlife habitat and alter river temperatures, dissolved oxygen levels and flows. And while hydropower creates fewer pollution and climate problems than fossil fuel power, it isn’t entirely clean. Clearing vegetation to build a dam and flood land

can release greenhouse gases. And as vegetation decays and water levels fluctuate, methane – a greenhouse gas far more potent than carbon dioxide – can build up and escape from reservoirs. Ironically, although hydropower is seen as an energy source that helps slow global warming, in many areas its viability is threatened by climate change. Rising greenhouse gas emissions and a warming world affect the entire hydrological cycle – surface and ground water, glaciers, precipitation, runoff and evaporation. Shifting precipitation patterns and increased droughts are changing water levels in rivers and behind hydro dams. The massive Hoover Dam on the Colorado River is operating at 30 per cent capacity, and new turbines have to be installed at lower elevation because of low precipitation and drought. In Nepal, “low water levels rendered a brandnew dam project ineffective and cut off the water supply farther downstream,” said John Matthews, director of fresh water and adaptation at Conservation International, in Scientific American. Matthews and co-authors of a study in the journal PLoS Biology wrote that climate change puts 40 per cent of

hydro development investments at risk. They recommend an approach to dams and hydro that takes climate change into account, by building projects in stages so adjustments can be made as more is known about climate patterns, or by “building with nature” rather than on top of it. Meanwhile, as more environmentally benign power technologies become increasingly cost-effective and viable, the US is removing older dams, many of which don’t have fish ladders, because costs to maintain and repair them are too high, as are environmental impacts. Hydropower will remain part of the clean-energy equation, but we need to find the least disruptive, most efficient methods. Scientist Peter Gleick, president and cofounder of California’s Pacific Institute, says the key to supplying energy to growing populations in a warming world will be to use a diversity of power sources. “We need to design our energy systems to be resilient in the face of growing uncertainty about technology and climate and national security and all of the factors that affect energy,” Gleick told online magazine Slate. Vancouver Folk Music Festival photo

39 years of Folk Fest gold Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown @GrantLawrence

When you saunter through the East Gate of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, just past the money-soaked Royal VancouverYacht Club on Kitsilano’s “Golden Mile,” you quickly get a sense that you’re entering a different world, a weird and wonderful parallel universe of what Vancouver should be like all year round. No matter how kooky you’re dressed (or undressed), inside those gates there’s no judgment or prolonged stares. Instead, you’re greeted with a smile and often kind words from complete strangers. That’s the kind of inclusive vibe the Folk Fest has created over its 39 proud years of existence and perseverance, and you can experience it all for yourself this weekend in Jericho Beach Park (July 15-17). While the organizers are checking the weather forecast every 10 minutes or so, no matter what this so-far cool and temperate summer of 2016 brings, it won’t put a damper on the 60-plus acts from 18 countries around the world performing on seven beachfront stages. Personally, I’m most excited to see hometown heroes the New Pornographers bring their bombastic blast of indie-rock melodies to the main stage, but I also can’t wait to experience American balladeer M. Ward in the open air, and Hamilton’s upstart blues and rock singer Terra Lightfoot. While she has no relation to Gordon, she can write songs seemingly with the ease of a legend just like that. Speaking of the blues, local faves the Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer will be performing with the incredible gospel vocalist Dawn Pemberton. If you’re a fan of music, full stop, you simply can’t be miss this collaboration. (Full disclosure: I won’t be missing any of the artists this year, as I’ll be your humble Folk Fest mainstage emcee throughout the weekend).

Folk Fest artistic director Linda Tanaka has booked the artists at the festival since 2008, and is often trying to find the perfect balance of performers. That means she hopes to find artists that align with the festival’s philosophies, in that they are both highly entertaining and engaging, but also politically-minded and ethical. Then there’s the finer balance of satisfying longtime folkie patrons (like with this year’s headliner Bruce Cockburn), but also continually attracting a new and young audience (not to mention intense competition from upstart mega-festivals around the Pacific Northwest region). Tanaka readily admits that she is particularly looking forward to funky Afro-beat of Betsayda Machado y La Parranda el Clavo from Venezuela, and the soulful, deeply danceable traditional roots music of Lakou Mizik from Haiti. “Both groups have overcome huge obstacles to get to the festival,” says Tanaka. “Lakou Mizik formed after the earthquake to inspire their people to keep Haitian traditions alive. The Venezuelan band held fundraisers to get to Canada and are hoping to do a few other events besides the [Folk Fest] to earn extra money to take home for food and medicine for their communities. I am sure our audiences will love them both”. Since folk festivals were one of the first arenas to provide a platform for The Protest Song, you can expect to hear plenty of those too in these unsettling times. Local klezmer accordionist Geoff Berner is one of the only artists I have ever seen to perform with absolutely no fear. He’s always worth it, and he’ll be there, too. So hop on your bike and use those controversial new bike lanes along the Golden Mile. They’ll take you straight to the festival, where you can experience musical gold from your own backyard and around the world all weekend long. Kids 12 and under get in free. Parents: meet you in the beer garden. W

opened up on Main Street in the old Pho Hoang location (by the son and daughter of the original owner). Now, another brother-and-sister team has expanded the Vietnamese dining profile with the opening of House Special in Yaletown. Owners Patrick and Victoria Do come from a long line of family restaurateurs, both here and in Texas. You might

have heard of Green Lemongrass on Kingsway, founded by their mother,Yen. It’s still in operation, with a second location in Richmond. Patrick and Victoria have got game galore, and aren’t afraid to borrow successful recipes from family members, like the chicken wings from Uncle Hing in Houston ($12).These are plated over a thin layer of crispy rice bits and are slightly magical. Deeply crispy exteriors hide plump, succulent free-range meat flavoured with nuoc cham. Another winner was the frybread off the lunch menu. For $7, you get a soft, hollow, sesame-laced bread stuffed with hearties like fivespice duck confit with Asian slaw or sautéed mushrooms with house aioli. Less successful was the Son-In-Law Egg ($6).While the soft-boiled and deep-fried egg was perfectly runny and delicious, the tamarind jam it sits on is grindingly sweet and overpowers any other flavours on the plate. The jam appears again on the pork ribs ($12), which are nicely crisped, but rather bare in meat and also overwhelmed by the sweetness of the tamarind. The restaurant’s name is a reference to the house special

House Special’s confit duck fry bread. Dan Toulgoet photo pho that every Vietnamese restaurant features. Here, the large bowl ($14) holds a beef-based broth that is filled with tendon, tripe and other off-cuts of beef, as well as bean sprouts, basil, onions and lime. It’s a bit light on the herbs, but is aromatic and tasty nonetheless. The house salad ($14) is more inventive and delivers some punch. Green papaya and dehydrated mango play nicely with avocado, fresh herbs, goji berries, peanuts and heart of palm for some well-balanced flavours and textures. Shaken beef ($17) was a favourite dish on several visits. In line with the more modern and upscale presentation, the wine list (by the bottle) is small but smartly chosen and full of value, like New Zealand’s The Ned ($40). A

handful of decent cocktails are also worth trying, including the Kaffir Lime Collins ($9) and the Plum Smuggler ($10), but it’s the beer list that shines brightest, with selections from Four Winds,Yellow Dog, Bridge and Steel Toad. House Special still has some kinks to work out. Music is alternately quite nice or overly blaring, service is still inconsistent, and that tamarind jam needs to check itself, but, on the whole, there is more to applaud than disapprove, and there’s potential for this spot to turn into a top restaurant in any category. In other words, it’s paradise. Every region in Italy has its own unique identity but there’s something particularly distinct about Sardinia. Sitting 200km off the coast, it’s the most isolated. The locals consider themselves Sardinian rather than Italian. In fact, the second largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia is like a mini-continent unto itself. The landscape changes every few miles as do the dialect, traditional dress, cuisine and wine. Sardinia is one of Italy’s richest regions in terms of native grapes. In the past,

each corner of the island boasted its own specialty, from the poor deep sands in the southwest of Sulcis to the heat reflecting granite in the northeast of Gallura, by way of black volcanic rock, calcareous clay and a host of other soils. Obscure white varieties like Vernaccia di Oristano, Nasco and Nuragus as well as reds such as Bovale Sardo, Cagnulari and Nieddera are still linked to tiny limited areas. In many cases, passionate winemakers have come to their rescue, saving them from extinction.

Pemberton artists recount their favourite boozy memory Stephen Smysnuik The Growler @TheGrowlerBC

Pemberton Music Festival starts today (July 14) so we interviewed several of the performers about their first, worst or most memorable experience with alcohol. We were really hoping Noel Gallagher would be available to grace us with some of his stories, but no such luck. Oh well. Here are the two best stories we heard. Enjoy?

NICK SWARDSON: COMEDIAN, “SERIOUS DRINKER”

Good lord. I like the contradiction of your favourite booze memory, like both those things go together at all. It’s a good question, because I remember it vividly. My mother growing up used to drink a beer called Coors Light. My mom used to drink it like ice cold. I’ve told this story in my standup before. I remember summer nights and stuff, she would crack open a beer and she would give me a sip. She had some thing where she was like, if you give a child a couple sips, it was something like it was fine for them or something.Whatever her

Wines made from Vermentino (white) and Cannonau (red) are more widely available and have become Sardinia’s flagships. They cover the island from north to south but express themselves differently depending on where they grow. From whatever pocket they hail, both capture the fragrant Mediterranean brush and provide an evocative introduction to the island. Sending you bright rays from sun-soaked Sardinia. I was literally nine years old, and I remember going around school and talking loudly about how my favourite beer was Coors Light. I thought I was super cool. I remember the teacher got super upset when I said it in class. She called my mom and shit, but I thought I was super badass. “Yeah man, Coors Light – you guys haven’t tried it? That’s weird. It’s really good – probably one of the best.”

ZACH GRAY: VOCALS/ GUITAR FOR THE ZOLAS

I have this scarring experience with pastis (a French anise-flavoured spirit), but the way that alcohol works, even when you know you had

a terrible time with it, it still somehow produces nostalgia for that exact thing. I had a very weird couple months a few summers ago where I was shooting a movie with a few friends. They were shooting it in Europe, so we flew to Paris and had a few scenes there. Our next bunch of scenes was in Barcelona, so we took a train there. This train is a 12-hour overnight train. It was six people in one train cabin and nobody had thought to bring any food, except for our French souvenirs, which were an entire wheel of smelly cheese, and a big bottle of pastis. At first we thought this was a hilarious problem to

have and we were just going to consume it all, but anyone who has any experience with pastis can imagine how that would combine with smelly cheese in a confined space. By the end of it, we could barely live with ourselves. There was no window to

open, it was just this little cell filled with the Frenchest smells you could possibly ask for all floating around together. After 12 hours of only eating cheese and drinking pastis, I think the vomit rate was above 50 per cent.

Everyone was accepting that that was going to happen. Finally we landed in Barcelona and we were removing our bags from a compartment under the beds. From underneath one of the beds, out popped this tiny man. This tiny man had been stowed away – is there another word for a train stowaway? He was stowing away on this train to get free passage and he was this little, kind of, he looked like a…I don’t know how to describe him. He was a little man. He hopped out and he didn’t speak any English. All he said was, “No police please.” We were all in shock, and then he said, “Smells so bad,” and then he ran away. It was so gross, and we didn’t have that good a time at the time. But thinking about stinky cheese and pastis – and even vomiting – it just makes me want to go back to Paris. W

Tyler, The Creator courts controversy ALEX HUDSON @chippedhip

“Yes, I’m here babe. What’s up, give me the dick.” These are the first words that Tyler, The Creator says when he answers Westender’s call while running pre-tour errands in Los Angeles. The 25-year-old rapper quickly provides an explanation for his sexually charged greeting, barking, “I’m drunk! I’m drunk!” Just a couple of minutes after this, however, he reveals that he’s actually straightedge and never touches alcohol. “I could easily go get a gun and shoot myself in the dick,” he offers as a reason for his teetotaling lifestyle. “You probably have access to a knife. Why don’t you just cut your dick off? Because you don’t want to, am I right? I just don’t want to [drink alcohol].” These opening minutes of conversation provide a perfect introduction to Tyler, The Creator’s button-pushing personality: he’s provocative, a little gross, and full of fascinating contradictions. On the one hand, he’s been widely accused of promoting violent misogyny with his lyrics, and he’s known for using a certain homophobic slur that beings with “f ”; on the other, he has released a line of gay pride-themed T-shirts and described himself in a Tumblr post as “one of the least homophobic guys to walk this Earth.” He has been banned from the UK because of his lyrical content, and he cancelled a 2015 Australian tour due to visa issues apparently stemming from feminist protests. Over the course of this conversation, he makes numerous homoerotic quips

“My focus right now is Caucasian males and salad dressing.” –Tyler,The Creator

Rapper Tyler, The Creator may have come out with a gay pride themed T-shirt design and refer to himself as the “one of the least homophobic guys to walk this earth,” but he makes no apologies for using a certain homophobic slur that begins with “f” more than 200 times on his 2011 debut album Goblin. Golf Wang photo – something that could raise eyebrows among those who have accused him of homophobia in the past. “I like kissing guys on the mouth,” he claims at one point. When asked about his current projects, he declares, “My focus right now is Caucasian males and salad dressing.” He then goes on a lengthy spiel about his plans to launch a salad dressing company with his friend Jasper Dolphin, and I’m left unsure about where the jokes end and reality begins. For a multi-hyphenate artist like Tyler, a brand of

salad dressing sounds like a plausible next step. He is the ringleader of the (now mostly defunct) hip-hop collective Odd Future, has a clothing label called Golf Wang, makes visual art, directs music videos, and previously spearheaded the sketch comedy show Loiter Squad on Adult Swim. When making music, he does all of his own production, and his kaleidoscopic vision shines on 2015’s fulllength Cherry Bomb. Opener “Deathcamp” charges forward with head-banging rock riffs and Tyler’s gruff snarl, while “Fucking

Young/Perfect” is an R&B slow jam about the inner turmoil that results from falling in love with an underage teenager. Many rap fans will inevitably gravitate towards “Smuckers,” which contains high-profile guest verses from Kanye West and Lil Wayne and finds Tyler brashly declaring, “Cherry Bomb [is] the greatest fucking album since the days of sound.” The lyrics across the album’s 13 tracks are less inflammatory than the ones that Tyler was known for writing as a teen. That being said, he’s hardly cen-

soring himself: the venomous “Buffalo” takes aim at those who have criticized his homophobic epithets, and it’s hard to imagine a more graphically sexual song than the cunnilingusexalting “Blow My Load.” “I’m just making what I want to listen to,” Tyler says of his current musical direction. “When I was 17, 18, 19, saying crazy shit was fun. Like, ‘Awwww yeah, watch this lady get pissed off at this!’ But now it’s more about just making cool shit.” Although the international controversy surrounding

the rapper isn’t likely to die down anytime soon, this hasn’t hindered his prolific artistry: in June, he released a new single called “My Ego” and shared a remix of Zayn’s “Pillowtalk.” He’s got a busy summer tour schedule, which includes a slot at the local Pemberton Festival, and he’s even signed on as a voice actor in the upcoming animated feature The Adventures of Drunky (alongside Sam Rockwell, Jeffrey Tambor and Steve Coogan). Given his diverse output, it’s difficult to know what to expect from him next. But there’s one thing that we definitely won’t hear from Tyler anytime soon: any apologies for his contentious early lyrics. “I was young, it was cool at the time,” he offers. “I’m not sorry for it at all. It sucks that people go back to that stuff and decide to not allow me to travel as I please, but I’ll get over it. Everything will work itself out.” W

Maria Bamford finds her balance KELSEY KLASSEN @kelseyklassen

Comedian Maria Bamford tackles the subject of her own struggle with mental illness head-on in her Netflix series Lady Dynamite. Piper Ferguson photo

8 W July 14 - July 20, 2016

Maria Bamford’s new Netflix show is nothing like her life. Rather, it’s loosely like her life was, and nothing like it is now. With a little help from her friends Pam Brady (South Park) and Mitch Hurwitz (Arrested Development), the beloved standup comedian, voice actress and Pemberton Music Festival comedy headliner has gleefully laid out her neuroses in Lady Dynamite – a poignant, absurd and hilarious look at mental illness, shown through the exaggerated lens of the woman who lived it. In the show, Bamford

plays three fictionalized versions of herself: the shrill, overconfident, oversaturated and charmingly manic Past Maria; Blue Maria, living at home with her parents in Duluth after an emotional breakdown, spending her days as a day patient at a psychiatric hospital; and Present Maria, haplessly trying to find a balance between the two. The series is making waves for its unflinching portrayal of mental illness, while at the same time remaining lightheartedly bizarre and entertaining. And while reenacting that time in her life could have been a potential trigger, Bamford explains that making Lady Dynamite was

nothing but a fun and collaborative learning experience. “I’m a stable person now, with meds, and so it’s just acting,” adds the star, known for her cult comedy special Maria Bamford:The Special Special Special, which she shot in her parents’ living room with just them as the audience, and hit web series,The Maria Bamford Show. “I haven’t been manic in the years since I’ve been on medication, which is about four now. And I think it’s a much better way of life. Though slightly boring!” she admits. In an incredibly layered 2014 portrait by The New York Times, however, Bamford’s years-long battle with anxiety, OCD, suicidal and

violent thoughts, over-work, and Type-II bipolar disorder – which all came to a head in 2011 with the accidental death of her beloved pug, Blossom – were revealed to be a nearfatal struggle for the star. It’s not the standard makings of a smash comedy, but the ordeals have often served as fodder for Bamford’s unique, self-deprecating standup routines, and provided a leaping off point for Hurwitz and Brady to actually push the somewhat clichéd autobiographical comedy genre (see Louie, CurbYour Enthusiasm, and Netflix’s own Master of None) into new territory.

@WESTENDERVAN

PEMBERTON MUSIC FESTIVAL “A nice thing about Netflix is they want the writers of the show to get a voice,” says Bamford of the online streaming service, which has become a go-to source for binge-worthy original content. “Whereas network television in the past […] kind of wants a more likeable character, a perceived ‘marketable’ character or marketable story, rather than just tell the story and give the comic a voice as it is.” She also jokes, though, of the data-hoarding corporate behemoth, that even after filming the show, she still doesn’t know what goes on at Netflix HQ. “They are very mysterious…” she chuckles. “[Netflix chief content officer] Ted Sarandos is very friendly – everyone is very friendly – but I don’t know… I somehow imagine that there’s this giant computer that’s just keeping track of all the secrets and it’s just tons and tons of data from all over the world. Maybe space!” she exclaims. “Maybe they’re taking readings on Mars and the moon to see how programming’s going out there.” No matter how they do it, the fact is that Netflix has another hit on its hands. Threads from Bamford’s life and standup material provide the stitching to the show – her dark, unwanted thoughts, her unwavering love of pugs, her soul-crushing stint as a corporate spokesperson – but then the writers’ room has had its way with unforgettable supporting characters like agent/emotional tyrant Karen Grisham (SNL’s Ana Gasteyer), fourth-wall bending cutaways with celebrity guests like Patton Oswalt, and recurring gags that will remind many of Arrested Development at its best. Despite Lady Dynamite’s popularity since it was released in May, though, the show isn’t really top of mind for Bamford when reached at her home in Southern California. Instead, in her trademark tremulous stutter, Bamford makes pleasant chit

chat about a nightmare bathroom renovation, couples’ pizza parties, and her elderly pug cartel. She’s in a good place now, she says, and her latest material, which she hopes to roll out soon in a new special, reflects that. “I just got married last year, which has been wonderful,” she says, giddily. (Bamford met her husband, visual artist Scott Marvel Cassidy, on OkCupid after changing her profile name to “Hog-

book”). “And that’s been really exciting, because I’ve never had a relationship last over a year, and we’ve been together three years. It’s kind of a miraculous experience,” she laughs, “and I think I’ll talk about that. “And yeah, I don’t have as much stuff about [mental illness],” she continues. “I mean, I hope I can write new material. It’s not my desire to have any sort of symptoms in order to get more material, though. I’m feeling really

good, and so there’s no need. I don’t believe the whole thing about somebody having to suffer to create important work.” In fact, Bamford, who will be performing this week at Pemberton alongside the likes of Cheech and Chong, Craig Robinson & the Nasty Delicious and the Lucas Brothers (who make a few comically sardonic appearances on Lady Dynamite as well), has had the epiphany that she doesn’t need to suffer to create work, period. One of the themes of Lady Dynamite is Bamford’s attempt to be “less ambitious,”

so as to not get overwhelmed by the cannibalistic pace of Hollywood. In real life, it’s a strategy that’s worked. “I am definitely happier,” she says. “Sometimes I’ll get anxious and, you know, fear of missing out. Like, ‘Why am I not doing a tour of Brazil right now??’” she jokes, her voice doing accent gymnastics. “‘That’s the place to be…’ Or, you know… ‘I gotta be in a magazine,” she riffs, switching to a southern drawl, “‘cuz when people are in magazines they’re happier. Isn’t that one of the main things they’ve gotten from

all those happiness studies?’” she asks, sassily. “It’s okay, you know? I took the weekend off and my husband and I went out for dinner with some friends, and then kind of had a pizza party and just hung out with people. It’s just so nice. “It’s not very ambitious, but it’s wonderful.” W

FILM & TV

L-R: Brittney Wilson, Maija Tailfeathers, and Xantha Radley portray Downtown Eastside survival sex trade workers in On the Farm, a new feature film based on the bestselling book by Stevie Cameron. Lincoln Clarkes photo

Beyond Pickton ‘On The Farm’ retells Robert Pickton story through the eyes of its victims Sabrina Furminger Reel People

@Sabrinarmf

The story of serial killer Robert Pickton and the devastation he wrought on the Downtown Eastside is a complicated one to tell. More than a decade after Pickton’s arrest, a new film takes on the difficult story in order to give voice to its victims. Pickton is part of the story,

but he’s not the whole story. His Port Coquitlam pig farm of horrors is part of the story, too, as is the sum total of women he murdered and dismembered: 49 is what he told an undercover officer. Those are the elements of the story that are easily recalled, but the serial killer (who was convicted in 2007 of the second-degree murders of six women; the DNA of 27 more were found on his property), his pig farm, and the cold statistics are fractions of a larger story about sexism, racism, addiction, systemic prejudice, and police indifference – and that larger and infinitely more nuanced story is the one that has gone mostly untold. Investigative journal-

ist Stevie Cameron pieced together that labyrinthine tale in her 2010 national bestselling book, On the Farm: Robert William Pickton and the Tragic Story ofVancouver’s Missing Women. Cameron introduced her readers to the vulnerable women – the majority of whom were survival sex trade workers, First Nations, and addicts – Pickton targeted, and painted a portrait of a climate in which vulnerable women were dehumanized and the police establishment refused to acknowledge the existence of a serial killer in the DTES. Cameron’s 700-page tome was subsequently optioned by Vancouver producer Rupert Harvey, who – along with screenwriter Dennis Poon –

shaped the difficult story into On the Farm, a feature-length film that screens at VIFF’s Vancity Theatre on July 17 before its broadcast premiere on CBC Television on July 23. In June, On the Farm won three Leo Awards, including Best Television Movie. The film stars Maija Tailfeathers (The Guard, Rebel) as Nikki Taylor, a fictionalized composite of many of Pickton’s victims. Nikki – who works in the survival sex trade – struggles with addiction and watches helplessly as her friends disappear without a trace or any action from the authorities, until her own violent confrontation with the killer. Sara Canning (Eadweard, Remedy) co-stars as a beat

REVIEW // THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS

Starring Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet Directed by Chris Renaud, Yarrow Cheney It may not break any new narrative ground but The Secret Life of Pets provides plenty of breezy, animated summer charms. From the studio behind the highly successful Despicable Me flicks, the movie begins with a New York City terrier named Max (C.K.) who enjoys the quiet life with his owner in

their highrise apartment. Before long, a serious case of pseudo-sibling rivalry

12 W July 14 - July 20, 2016

ensues after a recently rescued stray called Duke (Stonestreet) is adopted

and enters the fray. What transpires is predictable from afar – dogs

cop determined to get her department to take an interest in the growing stack of missing persons’ reports, and Sarah Strange portrays an equally determined coordinator at a DTES women’s dropin centre. At the helm of On The Farm is veteran director Rachel Talalay (whose numerous credits include Tank Girl, DoctorWho, and an episode in the upcoming season of BBC’s Sherlock). It almost wasn’t to be. Talalay wasn’t keen to watch, let alone direct, what could easily be a salacious and exploitative MOW about Pickton’s crimes, and she had a hard time understanding why Harvey (her husband) optioned the book in the first place – until she actually read the book. “It’s really not the Pickton story,” she says over tea in Kitsilano. “It’s so easy to say, ‘I’m not going to watch that film about those awful murders.’ But that’s not why Stevie wrote the book, and it’s not why Rupert set out to make the film, and we communicated that from beginning to end, which is why everyone wanted to be involved.” Tailfeathers had that same first reaction when she cracked open the script and realized she was auditioning for a role in a film about the murders. “I got this sick feeling in my stomach. I had that initial response of, ‘Oh god, really? Why? Why are they doing this? Who wants to tell this story?’ But then I was, ‘Well, why would Rachel be involved? Why would she be doing this if that was the approach that they were taking?’” says Tailfeathers, seated beside Talalay. Then she read the entire script, and realized that the story is humanizing and ethical. It focuses on the innumerable challenges faced by the women in their daily lives – as well as their relationships and burdens – and hands the power back to the victims. “It was a huge responsibility to tell this story in the right way, and do justice to the get in precarious situation, meet other adorable and not-so-adorable animals, have bonding adventure, put their differences aside – but the journey is full of laughs, dressed up with some rather gorgeous animation, and even contains enough heart to add the right amount of depth. The movie features a lot of celebrity vocal talent and the cast does a credible job of enhancing their respective characters. In addition to C.K. and Stonestreet, Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Jenny Slate, Bobby Moynihan, Hannibal Buress, Dana Carvey and Albert

families, who are living with that trauma and that reality every day,” says Tailfeathers. Filming occurred over four weeks in 2015 at locations in Vancouver, Langley, and Abbotsford. Both Talalay and Tailfeathers describe the shoot as emotionally charged and inspiring. “There was always the thought of the importance of what you’re doing at all times,” says Talalay. Numerous family members of Pickton’s victims were present on set as background performers. As for the character of the killer, Pickton (portrayed by Ben Cotton) functions mainly on the periphery. “This film isn’t about the serial killer, or the crimes,” says Talalay. “It’s about the bigger story.” Last week, the filmmakers screened On the Farm for the victims’ families. Many were invited to the screening (which was bookended by words and songs from a medicine man), and at least 10 chose to attend, as did the community liaison from VPD victim services. Family, cast, and crew shed tears together before, during, and after the screening.Talalay says the family members “came and thanked us, and they’d seen exactly what we’d wanted them to see, which was the big story,” says Talalay. “That was my first moment of relief.” Tailfeathers hopes On the Farm will inspire reflection and change in its audiences – especially because “not a whole lot has changed since [2005]. Pickton is a serial killer, but there are still women who are going missing, particularly Indigenous women, and women who are working in the survival sex trade,” she says. “Homelessness rates are up, and people living with addictions are still marginalized and criminalized. It’s an ugly place, but there is beauty and richness to that community.” W ! On the Farm&A #MH6,@' $-4M@C4 A6C44H,H/ ),** K4 2G**G)45 K' M FMH4* 5,A6>AA,GH? $,6+4@A M@ #:NN?GC/?

Brooks are just some of the highlights. However, it’s Kevin Hart’s tough-talking bunny Snowball who steals the show. The Secret Life of Pets is never as endearing as it could have been and not every character makes a lasting impression. But, the film does provide a highenergy, joke-filled escape that combines plenty of wit with good old-fashioned slapstick. While never rising to greatness yet fully capitalizing on the broad appeal and intriguing premise, the movie manages to gleefully find its footing. –Thor Diakow

My Digs: Scott Morison and Elizabeth Burke James Day. Mostly we keep things simple and fun. Art will continue to become a big part of our lives and Scott will hopefully keep painting, too!

Jennifer Scott A Good Chick to Know

@Jennifer_AGCTK

Downsides: Our kitchen is lovely but a little small for us. There is a wok kitchen (as we did not design the house ourselves) and we are thinking of opening up the whole space to have one larger kitchen. As our friend Josh says, “First World Problems.” We are very fortunate.

Scott Morison defined the Browns Socialhouse brand by creating a stylish social gathering space, so it comes as no surprise that the Dunbar home he shares with his wife, Elizabeth Burke, offers a bold, inviting design perfect for family and entertaining. This week, Elizabeth walks us through the custom space they have created together at home. What is it: A 4,200-sq.-ft. house in the West Dunbar neighbourhood.

living in such a beautiful neighbourhood.

Occupant: Scott Morison, president and founder of Browns Socialhouse Restaurant Group and wife Elizabeth Burke, a Pilates instructor.

First thing I changed: We changed the basement to accommodate a custom, fullyequipped Pilates studio. Also, we changed all the lights to LED to be more sustainable.

Major selling feature: The prime location, being close to the endowment land trails, downtown and amenities near by. It’s a dream

Feature I brag about: We converted a bedroom into my dream closet. It has a custom pink chandelier, marble counter on the island

This is my happy place; often you will find a pug cuddled up under the Louis XIV chair in (of course) a matching pink doggy bed. That one conversation piece: I think our large 10-foot media screen with surround sound downstairs gets a lot oohs and ahhs… People always want to come over to watch sporting events and movies.

The décor: Colour and warmth! The space is open concept on the main level so we wanted each area to have a distinct feel. The family room is warm and bright, the dining area is soft with a custom maple table and the formal area has lots of blues and was designed with some fun pieces like our dinosaur glass table. We grounded the different areas with beautiful rugs from East India

Carpets. Scott is not afraid of colors and textures and I never get bored of seeing all the eclectic artwork as Vancouver’s climate can be cool and grey. It feels nice to be in a warm space. The Deighton Cup is one of Vancouver’s precious few opportunities for getting gussied up. The only problem: If you’ve been to the event one or two (or seven) times, how do you keep things fresh? Take inspiration from current fashion trends, horseracing culture or historical eras, says Crystal Carson, Deighton Cup style director and judge of Style Stakes, the event’s competition for best-dressed. “Androgyny is big on runways and I’m going to do a menswear look with lingerie. A jockey-inspired look would also be fun,” she says. “Horseracing has been around for hundreds of years, so why not look at what people did in the ’20s or ’50s?” But by far the easiest way to change things up annually is to alternate your focus – one year, concentrate on the outfit and keep the hat simple, the next, do the opposite.

HEADS UP

Hats aren’t mandatory, however, plenty of Vancouverites relish the chance to put something other than a

Hat by Hive Mind Millinery. Paul Behm photo toque on their heads. “People find hats intimidating because they’re not used to wearing them, but often clients who say they want something small end up with the most dramatic pieces,” says Dominique Hanke, owner of Hive Mind Millinery. She says choosing a hat is all about balance. “If you’re tall, don’t wear something tall and if you’re wide, don’t wear something wide. If you’ve got a little round face, don’t cover it with a big floppy hat,” she says. “You don’t have to go for traditional styles – The Duchess of York wore a fedora to Royal Ascot this year.”

The dearth of dressy occasions in our neck of the woods means a Deighton Cup outfit will often be worn just once. Carson says the way to get bang for your sartorial buck is to wear separates so you can re-use the pieces. “Culottes are a great thing to try this year,” she says. Hats are seen as pricy, but can be affordable – Hanke’s start at $150 for a fascinator. Carson says you can also modify something you’ve worn before by removing or adding flowers and ribbons. “It’s traditional – when women wore hats all the time they would re-trim them at home,” she says. Carson suggests turning that into an event. “Get creative! Have a hat exchange or get together for a crafting session with cocktails.”

FUN FOR ALL

The stereotype of horseracing events is that they’ll be stiff and stuffy, but Carson says the Deighton Cup is an exception. “It’s only eight years old and doesn’t come from a historical tradition, so its focus is just fun. It’s not snobby at all. Of course it’s classy and luxurious, but not pretentious – just like Vancouver,” she says. W

Smoothies can be a delicious and nutritious way to start your day. iStock photo

@WholeNourishBC

Smoothies are all the rage these days, and have been for a while now. Anyone from the sports enthusiast to the basic trend-follower can enjoy their meals in liquid form and get very creative with it. All you need is a blender, and not even a fancy one at that. Now don’t get me wrong, some of us still fantasize about one day being the fine owner of a Vitamix – the Bentley of all kitchen appliances, and the true carrier of the key to my heart (because food and efficiency is awesome). But even a handheld blender will do to make food magic. Smoothies are not only delicious, but are easy to make. They’re great for a breakfast or a snack, and they’re a sneaky way to get your kids to eat fresh veggies and fruits. But what actually makes a good, healthy smoothie? I think that most people have a tendency to mix a bunch of fruit together with juice and call it a day. The problem with fruit smoothies is that it will only provide short bursts for energy because they contain so much sugar. Your body will metabolize it right away, making you crash a short while after. And while green smoothies are a great way to get tons of veggies

into your diet, some people really don’t like the taste. So why not try a combination of both? Components of a healthy smoothie should be high in nutrients and flavor. THE ISSUE WITH PROTEIN POWDERS

Not all powders are created equal, and too much protein is acidic and hard on the kidneys. North Americans get three times the amount of protein we should through diet. Many protein powders are highly processed and heated to the point where the protein is denatured, which makes it impossible for the body to recognize and use, resulting in high levels of acidity and toxicity in the body which can lead to illness and disease. Some powders can contain preservatives,

@MyszkaWay I’ve been dating this girl and she keeps asking me to roleplay rape, and to pretend to rape her, but it makes me feel weird. My fear of acting in this role, primarily due to the terrifying idea that I would actually enjoy playing it, has led to tension in previous relationships. I am wondering how I might become more comfortable with this idea. Alternatively, if it’s something I just can’t do, what are some sensitive ways to communicate this. I have noticed my previous reactions have led to my partners being less willing to share other fantasies in the future. Am I being stupid? If you are being stupid or not depends on one clarification: the purpose of your reluctance. Are you opposed to her rape fantasy in some “White Knight” morality crusade to support feminism, and prevent the perpetuation ¤¬ t ¸ ´ ¶ § ´®¢ y ¸ ´ you not down to fake rape your girlfriend because the idea of forcing someone who is wincing and disgusted by your advances, even if you know it’s role play, super unsexy? Does your boner turtle at the idea of fucking someone who has no interest in you? If you find yourself nodding along with the latter, congratulations: stupid you are not. Men who rape are losers. They are psychopathic, sexually dysfunctional humans because no mentally sound human gets off on shoving their penis into a crying, struggling victim. Sadly, rape will always be a part of our society. Demented, deranged, damaged people

roam the world. But for the most part, they are the minority. Back in 2009, two researchers at the University of North Texas took data from 20 different studies over the last three decades and found that between 31 and 57 per cent of women have rape fantasies, and these fantasies are frequent in up to 17 per cent of those women. The subjects all had varying reasons for their rape fantasies, ranging from masochism, desirability (the woman is so attractive the man must have her at any cost) to “Sexual Blame Avoidance” (for women who feel as though asking for sex would make them tramps, then guilt is removed ©¥ ¶¤´ ¶´µ ´ v ¥´ ¤ ª´ idea was “sympathetic activation,” the nervous system becomes engaged in times of danger pumping out a flight or fight response marked by respiration, increased heart rate and genital arousal. Ultimately, the guy ended up completely falling for her and embodying the opposite of the dangerous, thrilling sexual experience her loins were after. It’s a hilarious piece that you should read. A fantasy is just that, and there is nothing wrong with acting them out in the bedroom with people who trust one another.Your girlfriend is scripting the fantasy, so consent is implied and that is the opposite of ¸ ¸ ´v ª´ ¦¤ ´y ©¥ ª´ fantasy, she is being raped by

{ y ¸ « ª´ © µ¸ ©¥« ¸¥µ thinks is attractive. It’s safe. It’s role play. That’s why we explore these kind of sexual desires with someone we trust. These experiences are improv. They don’t involve uncontrollable violence. A real rape – a disgusting, lifethreatening rape – is rarely used as masturbation material for the victim years later. Ask your girlfriend why she is so into this fantasy and see if there is a way that you can work within it. She probably just wants you to dominate her in a way you haven’t before. She wants to be squished like a submissive little bug, crushed under the weight and power of you, and fucked like crazy. There is this scene in Sex and the City ª´ ´ ª´ | w y marriage-obsessed “prude,” Charlotte, screams, “Don’t you just ever want to be really pounded hard, you know? Dammit, I just really want to be fucked!” Sometimes that’s all one wants. What is your regular sex like? Are you dominant in the sack or is she the more aggressive one? If you like her and she wants this, why not try it for her sake? If you are having trouble getting past it, remember that she wants this from you. Don’t worry about enjoying the fantasy too much because this is not a real rape and that does not make you sick or twisted. This is the one time where saying “she asked for it” is the irrefutable truth (don’t forget to use a safe word!). And as the saying goes, “you can’t rape the willing.” Love, Mish W

Horoscopes as provided by WE Editorial By Rob Brezsny

Upcoming adventures might make you more manly if you are a woman. If you are a man, the coming escapades could make you more womanly. How about if you’re trans? Odds are that you’ll become even more gender fluid. I am exaggerating a bit, of course. The transformations I’m referring to may not be visible to casual observers. They will mostly unfold in the depths of your psyche. But they won’t be merely symbolic, either. There’ll be mutations in your biochemistry that will expand your sense of your own gender. If you respond enthusiastically to these shifts, you will begin a process that could turn you into an even more complete and attractive human being than you already are.

I’ll name five heroic tasks you will have more than enough power to accomplish in the next eight months. 1. Turning an adversary into an ally. 2. Converting a debilitating obsession into an empowering passion. 3. Transforming an obstacle into a motivator. 4. Discovering small treasures in the midst of junk and decay. 5. Using the unsolved riddles of childhood to create a living shrine to eternal youth. 6. Gathering a slew of new freedom songs, learning them by heart, and singing them regularly – especially when habitual fears rise up in you.

Your life has resemblances to a jigsaw puzzle that lies unassembled on a kitchen table. Unbeknownst to you, but revealed to you by me, a few of the pieces are missing. Maybe your cat knocked them under the refrigerator, or they fell out of their storage box somewhere along the way. But this doesn’t have to be a problem. I believe you can mostly put together the puzzle without the missing fragments. At the end, when you’re finished, you may be tempted to feel frustration that the picture’s not complete. But that would be illogical perfectionism. Ninety-seven-per cent success will be just fine.

If you are smoothly attuned with the cosmic rhythms and finely aligned with your unconscious wisdom, you could wake up one morning and find that a mental block has miraculously crumbled, instantly raising your intelligence. If you can find it in your proud heart to surrender to “God,” your weirdest dilemma will get at least partially solved during a magical three-hour interlude. And if you are able to forgive 50 per cent of the wrongs that have been done to you in the last six years, you will no longer feel like you’re running into a strong wind, but rather you’ll feel like the beneficiary of a strong wind blowing in the same direction you’re headed.

How often have you visited hell or the suburbs of hell during the last few weeks? According to my guesstimates, the time you spent there was exactly the right amount. You got the teachings you needed most, including a few tricks about how to steer clear of hell in the future. With this valuable information, you will forevermore be smarter about how to avoid unnecessary pain and irrelevant hindrances. So congratulations! I suggest you celebrate. And please use your new-found wisdom as you decline one last invitation to visit the heart of a big, hot mess.

My friend Athena works as a masseuse. She says that the highest praise she can receive is drool. When her clients feel so sublimely serene that threads of spit droop out of their mouths, she knows she’s in top form. You might trigger responses akin to drool in the coming weeks, Virgo. Even if you don’t work as a massage therapist, I think it’s possible you’ll provoke rather extreme expressions of approval, longing, and curiosity. You will be at the height of your power to inspire potent feelings in those you encounter. In light of this situation, you might want to wear a small sign or button that reads, “You have my permission to drool freely.”

The latest Free Will Astrology poll shows that thirty-three percent of your friends, loved ones, and acquaintances approve of your grab for glory. Thirty-eight per cent disapprove, 18 per cent remain undecided, and 11 per cent wish you would grab for even greater glory. As for me, I’m aligned with the 11-per-cent minority. Here’s what I say: Don’t allow your quest for shiny breakthroughs and brilliant accomplishments to be overly influenced by what people think of you.

You are at the pinnacle of your powers to both hurt and heal. Your turbulent yearnings could disrupt the integrity of those whose self-knowledge is shaky, even as your smoldering radiance can illuminate the darkness for those who are lost or weak. As strong and confident as I am, even I would be cautious about engaging your tricky intelligence. Your piercing perceptions and wild understandings might either undo me or vitalize me. Given these volatile conditions, I advise everyone to approach you as if you were a love bomb or a truth fire or a beauty tornado.

Here’s the deal: I will confess a dark secret from my past if you confess an equivalent secret from yours. Shall I go first? When I first got started in the business of writing horoscope columns, I contributed a sexed-up monthly edition to a porn magazine published by smut magnate Larry Flynt. What’s even more scandalous is that I enjoyed doing it. OK. It’s your turn. Locate a compassionate listener who won’t judge you harshly, and unveil one of your subterranean mysteries. You may be surprised at how much psychic energy this will liberate. (For extra credit and emancipation, spill two or even three secrets.)

What do you want to be when you grow up, Capricorn? What? You say you are already all grown up, and my question is irrelevant? If that’s your firm belief, I will ask you to set it aside for now. I’ll invite you to entertain the possibility that maybe some parts of you are not in fact fully mature; that no matter how ripe you imagine yourself to be, you could become even riper – an even more gorgeous version of your best self. I will also encourage you to immerse yourself in a mood of playful fun as you respond to the following question: “How can I activate and embody an even more complete version of my soul’s code?”

On a summer day 20 years ago, I took my five-year-old daughter Zoe and her friend Max to the merry-go-round in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Zoe jumped on the elegant golden-maned lion and Max mounted the wild blue horse. Me? I climbed aboard the humble pig. Its squat pink body didn’t seem designed for rapid movement. Its timid gaze was fixed on the floor in front of it. As the man who operated the ride came around to see if everyone was in place, he congratulated me on my bold choice. Very few riders preferred the porker, he said. Not glamorous enough. “But I’m sure I will arrive at our destination as quickly and efficiently as everyone else,” I replied. Your immediate future, Aquarius, has symbolic resemblances to this scene.

Early on in our work together, my psychotherapist confessed that she only works with clients whose problems are interesting to her. In part, her motivations are selfish: Her goal is to enjoy her work. But her motivations are also altruistic. She feels she’s not likely to be of service to anyone with whom she can’t be deeply engaged. I understand this perspective, and am inclined to make it more universal. Isn’t it smart to pick all our allies according to this principle? Every one of us is a mess in one way or another, so why not choose to blend our fates with those whose messiness entertains us and teaches us the most? I suggest you experiment with this view in the coming weeks and months, Pisces.
