SIDEWALK SAFETY
The impressive upswing in cycling in Vancouver, partly due to a not-so-cost-effecitve transit system, and expense of owning a vehicle (on top of costly living expenses) has brought some new challenges. The good intentions of gradually stripping away traffic lanes for bike lanes has created a bike culture that now uses sidewalks where there are no separated bike lanes. They’ve been spoiled,
and it is getting out of control. Sidewalks are not safe for walking anymore. The city would have been smarter to designate ALL single, or right side traffic lanes as bike-priority, along with appropriately lowered speed limits for most routes. Also the impressive growth of racing bike culture has added swarms of super-quiet, expensive bikes, apparently with no bells, to our parks and streets.Vancouver, we

YOUR CITY CITY SHORTS // NEW 15% TAX FOR FOREIGNERS BUYING UP VANCOUVER HOMES
Just because you don’t want to leave the house doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy live music, like the Good Lovelies, who recently performed in Grant Lawrence’s front lawn. Grant Lawrence photo
Old and burnt out? Throw a house concert! Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown @GrantLawrence
If you’re a fan of live music, chances are you’ve spent many long nights in clubs, bars, ballrooms, or arenas, often into the wee, wee hours. When you’re in your 20s, it’s awesome and there’s no place you’d rather be, even when you get puked on by your pal as a result of that bouncy Commodore dance floor. In your 30s, getting sloshed in a live music venue until 2am is still acceptable if it’s the right band. If you’re in your 40s (like me) or older, with little kids at home (like me), the only person puking on you at 2am is your cranky toddler with Daycare Flu, and your late night rock-a-thons have taken on a completely different meaning. So what is a live music fan to do once they hit the wall of domestic exhaustion? How about this idea: bring the live music home. Don’t even leave your house! Imagine seeing your favourite artist from the comfort of your living room La-Z-Boy at the most civilized hour of 7pm, while surrounded by your closest and now also completely lame friends. This serene scene is possible. It’s called a house concert. Here’s what you do: figure out a way to contact your favourite artist and… just ask them. Even some of the largest names in the business will do private house concerts if you and your friends are willing to pay. You’d be surprised. A lot of artists like playing shows at 7pm, too. House concerts don’t really work
for bands (unless you live in some sort of punk rock squat on Mitchell Island), but they’re great for singersongwriters and acousticbased groups. Last week, my wife organized our first-ever official house concert on the front lawn of our home, starring Juno Award-winning roots band the Good Lovelies. It wasn’t easy. First we had to confirm a date with the band (a Monday night), send out the invitations, count up the RSVPs, organize enough chairs, set up some food, drink, and the sound system, as well as tarps and tents in case of rain. All of this required two full days worth of driving around the city picking up and dropping off heavy stuff. About 75 invited people showed up, a mixture of friends and neighbours and their kids. All the adults contributed the suggested donation of $20 (kids were free), and all proceeds went to the band. Everyone seemed to have a pretty good time, it didn’t rain, and the Good Lovelies strolled away with a fairly good payday. The concert on the lawn could be heard all over the neighbourhood, and that attracted plenty of looky-loos. That’s fine, but if you’re going to hang out and watch more than two or three songs at a house concert, you too should contribute to the cause, which some wander-bys didn’t. That minor gripe aside, house concerts seem like the perfect solution. They build community, support artists, and best of all, if you’re old and exhausted like me but still love the live tunes, you don’t even have to leave your house. And nobody puked! W

Foreigners who buy BC homes will have to pay a new 15 per cent tax starting Aug. 2 thanks to new legislation that the BC government introduced July 25. The measure comes after speculation that foreign money is to blame for surging Metro Vancouver home prices. The tax is set to apply to the sale of all homes in Metro Vancouver except those on treaty lands of the Tsawwassen First Nation. Those who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents will have to pay the tax. That includes corporations that are either not registered in Canada or are controlled by foreigners. BC residents already pay a 1 per cent tax on the first $200,000 of their purchase, 2 per cent on the remaining value up to $2 million and 3 per cent on the portion above that. The new measure would add $300,000 in new tax on a $2 million home. “The data we started collecting earlier this summer is showing that foreign nationals invested more than $1 billion into
Foreign nationals will now have to pay an additional 15 per cent tax on homes bought in BC beginning Aug. 2. Rob Newell photo BC property between June 10 and July 14, more than 86 per cent of it in the Lower Mainland,” said BC Finance Minister Mike de Jong to explain the government’s rationale for the new tax. “While investment from outside Canada is only one factor driving price increases, it represents an additional source of pressure on a market struggling to build enough new homes to keep up. This additional tax on foreign purchases will help manage foreign demand while new homes are built to meet local needs.” The new legislation also establishes a fund for market housing and rental initiatives, strengthens consumer protection, and gives the City of Vancouver
the tools it requested to increase rental property supply. –Glen Korstrom, Business in ,FXBV42>;
POP-UP POOLS ON THE WAY?
The Vancouver Park Board is looking at installing pop-up pools in areas of the city where residents don’t have easy access to beach or other aquatic facilities. Pop-up pools are essentially shipping containers filled with water that can be built either above or below ground. Planning and building the pop-up pools is part of a larger, more long-term strategy called VanSplash, which aims to identify areas that lack aquatic infrastructure
and determine ways to fill those gaps. “We saw this as something that is a new, very early, very fast-to-deliver facility that could be part of an aquatic strategy once gaps are identified,” said Malcolm Bromley, the city’s general manager of parks and recreation. “We could have a temporary pool in an area while we’re getting our act together to plan for a permanent pool.” Park board manager of research and planning Dave Hutch noted the annual operating costs for a pop-up pool would be about $120,000, funds that would cover staffing and set-up and teardown costs. The pool would likely be in place for a five-year term, and the ideal location would be situated in an existing park or near a community centre. Connectivity to transit and bike routes, along with parking and how the pool operation would impact other park amenities, are also considerations. Both staff and commissioners were careful not to attach a fixed date or location for a potential pop-up pool. Instead, they suggested the pool “could be” in place by next summer. Will growing fuel drive us to a cleaner future? David Suzuki Science Matters
@DavidSuzuki
The shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy is occurring mainly at the power plant level. But what about transportation? Can we significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by switching to cleaner fuels? Or is this just an attempt to keep 20th century technology chugging along while trading one set of environmental problems for another? Biofuels aren’t new and they aren’t used solely for transportation. Power plants can burn wood, for example, and many of the first autos, including Ford’s Model T, ran on ethanol or peanut oil. But they’re now seen as an alternative to fossil fuels for transportation. Biofuels offer several advantages over fossil fuels. Most are less toxic. Crops used to produce them can be grown quickly, so unlike coal, oil and gas that take millions of years to form, they’re considered renewable. They can also be grown almost anywhere, reducing the need for infrastructure like pipelines and oil tankers and, in many areas, conflicts around scarcity and political upheaval.
The main biofuels are ethanol and biodiesel. Biomass like wood can also be burned directly for fuel, although that usually produces more greenhouse gas emissions to produce the same amount of energy as burning fossil fuels. Biofuel greenhouse gas emissions are offset to a great extent because plants absorb and store carbon dioxide while they’re growing and sometimes in roots left in the ground, so CO2 emissions are roughly equal to or less than what the crops store. Despite the advantages, numerous problems have led many to question whether biofuels are a green alternative. Andrew Steer and Craig Hanson of the World Resources Institute noted in the Guardian that biofuel has three major strikes against it: “It uses land needed for food production and carbon storage, it requires large areas to generate just a small amount of fuel, and it won’t typically cut greenhouse gas emissions.” Producing biofuel with crops like corn often requires converting land from food to fuel production or destroying natural ecosystems that provide valuable services, including carbon sequestration. Crops also require fertilizers, pesticides and large amounts of water, as well as machinery for plant-
ing, growing, harvesting, transporting and processing. If forests are cleared for fuel crops, and if the entire lifecycle of the fuels is taken into account, biofuels don’t always reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions. Palm oil, used for biodiesel, is especially bad, because valuable carbon sinks like peat bogs and rain forests are often destroyed to grow palms. Using better farming methods and more efficient feedstocks and growing fuel crops on land that isn’t good for growing food can reduce land use and climate impacts. For example, fastgrowing grasses, agricultural and forest-industry wastes, and even household wastes can be used rather than crops like corn that are normally considered food. Some feedstocks are more efficient at producing energy than others. Ethanol from canola and sugarcane is better than from corn, as it delivers more energy compared to what’s required to produce the fuel. Cellulosic materials, including switchgrass and agricultural and forestry wastes, are even more efficient than sugar- and starch-based fuel stocks. They produce fewer greenhouse gases and don’t normally displace food crops, but the process of converting
cellulose to ethanol is more difficult than turning starch and sugars from corn or sugarcane to fuel. Some studies show switchgrass ethanol can produce 540 per cent more energy than that required to produce the fuel, compared to just 25 per cent more for corn-based ethanol. Experimental biofuels made from biomass like algae, as well as genetically synthesized organisms, show a great deal of promise, as they’re efficient and can be produced without large land bases. Biofuels can play an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, especially for applications like long-haul trucking and possibly air travel. Biodiesel and gasoline mixed with ethanol are already widely available. Research into new types of biofuels is also important, but the massive amounts of land, biomass and water required to produce conventional biofuels mean they aren’t a panacea. We can get further in transportation by focusing on fuel efficiency and conservation, increased public transit and other alternatives to private automobiles, and shifting to electric vehicles, especially as clean electricity sources become more widely available. 6 O>F;X YV;> F7 3F2%@.4zuki.org. Despite numerous and consistent accolades from both critics and the public, ask any Vancouverite, and you’ll hear one of the following: “It’s too expensive.” “It’s not fancy enough.” “The food is too complicated.” “The dishes lack depth.” Yadda-yadda-yadda…

Railtown Café is set to expand in a major way over the next year. The second location, at 1691 Main, will open in the winter, with 30 seats plus a small patio. The final open-

Well, love it or hate it, Hawksworth’s newest offering, the newly-born Nightingale, will likely have those detractors singing a different tune, and it’ll likely go something like this: “Erm-my-God, why is this so good?”That was one dining companion’s heartfelt utterance while still chewing a large mouthful of octopus. After averting my eyes from their gaping maw and trying the dish for myself, I had a similar, albeit quieter, reaction. It was excellent. Full stop. The menu here is envisioned as being considerably more casual than Hawksworth, but the focus on modern Canadian flavours, local and sustainable ingredients, and cocktail-friendly dishes is still very much in evidence. Prices are definitely more palatable. Pizzas
hover around $15-$18, all vegetable dishes and desserts are $12, and the rest falls in the $12-$22 range, with only a couple of dishes hitting the $24-$25 mark, and one, a roasted halibut and cioppino platter suitable for two, reaching $45. Those vegetable dishes are called side dishes, but they’re really quite large. Lightly marinated beets are dressed with sumac labneh and dukkah. Oven-roasted cauliflower comes with green harissa and sunflower seeds. The salt and pepper frites with garlic aioli are classic and perfect; creamy flesh cased in crispy exteriors. Despite some of the Middle Eastern influences, it’s really an ode to Italy here, with fantastic pizzas and handmade pastas worthy of
repeat investigation. Roasted mushroom with garlic confit, fontina and young potatoes is earthy and soul-satisfying. Ricotta tortellini is delicate and delicious, with chanterelles and pine nuts. Dishes like the crispy chicken were too good not to order several times. Served over a preserved lemon yogurt and sprinkled with fresh dill, it’s a perfect symphony of texture and flavour, marred only by the mild espelette peppers, which felt a bit out of place here (pickle is ideal). In keeping with the casual ethos, the room is bright and cheerful, with acres of light wood, white tiling and high ceilings and windows. The two levels are loud, but not uncomfortably so, and the vintage architectural
details of the famed Marine Building have been incorporated for a truly lovely take on a beautiful classic style. The full menu is available at the bar, so sitting here gives you both front-row seats to the action in the kitchen (it’s more than a bit busy, as you might imagine) and access to the full menu with less chance of long waits. Service at opening was better than expected, and it’s only improved since. Like many restaurants dealing with Vancouver’s archaic and slow permit process, Nightingale’s opening was delayed, meaning several experienced staff that had been hired in advance were forced to find work elsewhere as the delays dragged on. This in turn meant that a week before opening, the
restaurant was madly scrambling to fill its FOH roster. Despite this, the service has been solid on every visit, no mean feat for any new open. In addition to the dozenor-so excellent cocktails here, you can also indulge in some stellar local draughts and cans, and even some zero-proof libations for those in the designated driver seat. Nightingale’s ode to Canadian comfort food might not be new, but it’s a pretty tune and one I’ll be singing again. W

homebrewer who cultivated a likeminded community without ever intending to. His death in June 2013 – from lung cancer just a month shy of his 50th birthday – left a chasm in the beer community at large. He was a guru, a fountain of simple advice that gave the city’s novice home brewers coming through his store the confidence to thrive. Above all, he stressed simplicity. No esoteric ingredients. No funky styles. Brew good pale ale and move on from there. It was advice that helped foster that community. “Anybody who’s opened a brewery [in Vancouver] in the past few years has walked through Dan’s door at some point,” says Chris Booth, who took over managing the store after Small passed away. “He was the only game in town at the time.” In the years leading up to his death, business was thriving, but it hadn’t been a boon for long. He started the shop in 1991 at 28 years old, and business dragged for over a decade. He made his own bread at times just so he could eat. “There were lots of years that were really dry. Hard, grueling years,”Tom says. But stubbornness kept him going, along with a driving need to educate people on what good beer actually is. He’d record interviews with the brewers of Shaftsbury, Granville Island Brewing and Okanagan Springs – back when these were still independent breweries – and use these for a homebrewing column he wrote for the Bum Report, a local zine dedicated to living on the cheap. He collected and compiled recipes in a Duo-Tang and made them available for all his customers. “He was plugged into the beer scene when it was almost non-existent, when the most edgy brewery was Storm,” says Saul Moran, a Dan’s Homebrew employee since 2007.
It wasn’t until he moved the shop to its location in the Heatley Building on Hastings Street in 2006 that business began to pick up.This gave the shop some much-needed visibility, which was vital because the move coincided with a growing local interest in homebrewing. “People were waking up to the fact that commercial beer is a fucking scam. Commercial beer had just been getting worse and worse,”Tom says. At the time, there weren’t too many good options for beer, and people were discovering that they could make it at home for cheap. Moran says the shop’s peak business years were 2008 and 2009, as interest in craft beer swelled, but right before any of the craft breweries had opened. “Vancouver got a leg up before we even knew we needed it,” Moran says. “We’re still not caught up with Portland, but we might have been a lot further behind [if not for Dan].” Dan passed away less than a year after his diagnosis, and a month after moving the shop to its current location on East Hastings, between Hawks and Campbell. After he died, Booth and Blair Calibaba – a close friend of Dan’s, who later opened Bomber Brewing – launched the Dan Small Award for homebrewing, given out every year at the BC Beer Awards. Bomber and Parallel 49 Brewing each released commemorative beers in his honour. These were small tokens to remember a guy who’ll never get to see the community he helped cultivate blossom into a full-blown industry. It’s something his friends says he would have been impressed by.Well, mostly impressed by. “To be perfectly honest, the periodic dartboard of styles that happen right now, he would’ve laughed his head off at that,” Calibaba says. Because remember: Keep it simple. W

When wine collides @MichaelaWine
What do the legendary Elton John, Pulitzer Prizewinning writer Richard Ford and prominent wine critic Antonio Galloni have in common? Well, for one thing, they were all wandering the streets of Barolo at the same time last week. Collisioni is an annual festival hosted in the Langhe hills of Piedmont offering a collision of music, literature and wine. This five-day event is jam packed with concerts, symposiums with literary figures and tastings, all in the town which gives its name to the region producing the most profound expression of the great Nebbiolo grape. With a population of 750, Barolo swells to over 100,000 for these few days. Called a cultural marathon, Collisioni’s objective is to bring together these various art forms which are capable of provoking thought, pleasure and interaction. This is the second year I participated in Collisioni’s Progetto Vino. I like to
think of it as summer camp for adult oenophiles. While the wine seminars didn’t draw the same crowds as Mika, the initiative does attract top sommeliers, buyers, Masters of Wine and other esteemed professionals from around the globe. We attend to connect over the magnificent wines of Barolo and there were outstanding examples from Elvio Cogno, Rocche Costamagna, Ceretto, Ciabot Berton and Marchesi di Barolo to name a few. However, just as enticing are the sessions on unheralded wines like the newly rediscovered Nascetta grape and sadly out-offavour Grignolino variety. Not all the wines were great, but the conversations they evoked were stimulating – and our glasses were always half full. This is where the seeds are planted for what will eventually find its way to your palate. I love the meeting of the arts that Collisioni provides. The gigs, recitals and wine tastings take place simultaneously. Next year I propose not just a collision but a complete mash-up. I’d be curious to hear singer-songwriter Tom Waits and author

David Sedaris weigh in on wine for example. There are many parallels that can be drawn between wine and music.Wine offers a similar diversity of genres that matches every mood and satisfies different cravings. For example, the frothy red Lambrusco is like the unexpected syncopated rhythm of early swing. Both are guaranteed to put a smile on your face. As for Elton John, this year’s headliner at Collisioni, I make the comparison with good, solid and delicious Chianti. The two are widely popular, crowd-pleasing and

have stood the test of time. In terms of literature, reading a good book is like enjoying a good bottle. One of my favourite authors, David Lodge, describes the love of reading as “the inevitable compression of pages.” Just as you don’t want the story to end but can’t stop turning the pages, with wine you regret the diminishing levels of liquid yet are compelled to take another sip. While the story on the pages of a book may be more obvious, both music and wine have a tale to tell. Wine in particular has the ability to express place, time and people. If you listen closely, you can hear it. Rather than making specific recommendations
Piedmont is where wine, music and literature come together. Michaela Morris photo this week, I am simply giving general encouragement to drink. Turn on the music, pour yourself a glass
of wine, settle in with that book you’ve been meaning to read and enjoy a collision of sound, taste and words. W

Five Finds: ‘Glamp’ it up Jennifer Scott A Good Chick to Know
@Jennifer_AGCTK
This week I’ve rounded up my top five picks to step up your outdoor adventure style and easily transition from camping to glamping.

1. Lotus Bud tent; available at LotusBelle.com ($950USD). As with any design, a strong foundation sets the tone for a successful space. Applied to the great outdoors, I’ve never seen a better starting point for a fabulous camp site than the Lotus Bud. With an aesthetic to make any bohemian festival goer stop and stare, the tent offers a unique circular alternative to the traditional linear options. The fully waterproof cream canvas structure boasts a 9ft floor diameter, a pop-up roof, and stands at 7.5ft tall when fully pitched. 2. Aya Shibori pillows ($69 each) and fringed wool bedspread ($250); available

at Atelier St. George, 11 East 7th. Your childhood nylon sleeping bag just won’t fit the bill for this trip – sleeping in style is an essential element of any glamping adventure and Atelier St. George has got you covered. Literally. These traditionally-dyed linen pillows and 100 per cent wool blankets have nailed how to get you warm and keep you cool all at the same time. 3. M Light; available at Vancouver Special, 3614 Main ($350). Forget the flashlight – the M Light brings ambient lighting to the camping level. These portable LED spotlights are battery operated, can be charged by a traditional outlet or a USB port (read: you can charge it in your car) and have a dimmer button to allow for search-light brightness or a perfect bedside reading lamp.
fabulous camp abode, the search for a glam place to lounge is over. This bohoinspired woven cotton hammock perfectly coordinates with the Lotus Bud and at just over 10 feet in length and nearly three feet wide, it’s the perfect place to kick back in style.
5. Vacances Portable Grill; available at Nordstrom, 799 Robson ($89). Available in a variety of fashion-forward colours, the Vacances grill is a chic must-have for when hunger strikes. Designed with aluminum and steel, this portable grill can suit any menu plan as it can be used with either charcoal briquettes or smoking chips. W

CONTOUR KIT
Kim Kardashian can suck it. Any fool knows that if you really want to master high-maintenance makeup, you need to take advice from a real queen – a drag queen. They’ve been contouring, highlighting and applying falsies since before Doris Day was a virgin. Peach Cobblah has been performing in drag for six years. She learned her beauty skills from makeup artists, her husband (also a drag artiste) and other members of the community. “We have a real collaborative spirit, spearheaded by queens who are makeup artists like Jaylene Tyme of Curlique, who I think is the most incredible artist in the city,” she says. Ms. Cobblah describes her makeup as, “like a trashbag clown! It’s much more feminine than my day-to-day look but I’m not trying to look like a woman.” She found her face through years of trying different things, not by mimicking others or watchingYouTube. “Part of the joy of drag is the journey of finding out
Peach takes around two hours to apply her makeup each night. Contour powders and highlighters are a must. Top tip? “Hold a piece of cardboard up to your face while you’re brushing on whatever product you use to contour so that you get a firm edge. Then use some of your highlight along that firm edge to really make your new cheekbones pop,” says Peach.
LASHING OUT
Dramatic lashes are key. “I used to buy expensive ones, but now I just go to the dollar store,” says Peach. Lash glue often contains formaldehyde, so Peach sticks to Quo Full Eyelash Adhesive ($5.50, at Shoppers Drug Mart), which is free from both formaldehyde and latex, a common allergen.
GLITTER GIRL
Peach shops at pro makeup stores Curlique (410 Robson) and Studio FX (825 West Georgia), and also likes Sephora. “They give samples, which is great – I need to know that products
will last,” she says. She’s a fan of Make Up For Ever’s Glitter ($20, at Sephora). “It’s long-lasting and beautifully pigmented,” she says. “I also like Sephora’s own-brand eyeliner pencils.” These come in 25 shades and three finishes – matte, shimmer and glitter – $12, at Sephora.
FACE OFF
At the end of the night, the makeup comes off and the skin needs love. Peach Cobblah starts with a professional solvent, then uses Caudalie Grape Seed Make Up Removing Cleansing Oil ($31, from Sephora), followed by Caudalie Polyphenol C15 Overnight Detox Oil ($59, from Sephora). She relishes the half-hour ritual. “It’s part of my coming in to land – a contemplative moment,” she says. Welcome to Vancouver Pride 2016
On behalf of the citizens of Vancouver and my colleagues on City Council, I am incredibly honoured to welcome you to Pride 2016. Vancouver’s Pride Parade and Festival is one of the biggest and best in the world, attracting hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors every year who come out to show their support and join in the festivities. Besides being a fabulous time, Pride is a celebration of hard-fought progress in the community’s work to secure equal rights and acceptance, and of our city’s commitment to diversity, equality, and acceptance. This year the City of Vancouver is excited to celebrate the opening of Jim Deva Plaza in the heart of

played an enormous role in shaping the city that Vancouver is today. As Mayor, it was an honour and a privilege to march with Jim each year
at Vancouver Pride, and his legacy continues to inspire our work to keep building a safer, prouder, more inclusive, and more equal
Vancouver. We are strongest when we are together, and the new Jim Deva Plaza gives us space to gather and celebrate everything the community has accomplished. I would once again like to thank the Vancouver Pride Society, its sponsors, and the dedicated volunteers for hosting such a world-class celebration of culture, freedom, and community spirit in Vancouver. On behalf of the City of Vancouver, Vancouver Park Board, Vancouver Public Library, Vancouver Police Department, Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, and the City’s LGBTQ2+ Advisory Committee, happy Pride! –Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson

Why Pride still matters
As theVancouver Pride Parade celebrates its 38th year, the LGBTQ rights movement continues to evolve, with many battles still to be fought. KRISTYN ANTHONY @allovthethings
Forty-seven years ago, Martin Boyce had just come out and was living in New York City. It was a hot, hazy summer’s night and he was headed to the Stonewall Inn, a hole-in-the-wall bar down on Christopher Street, deep in the heart of Greenwich Village. Outside the bar a police officer was losing a battle with a drag queen he was attempting to stuff into a paddy wagon. The cop took one look at Boyce and his friends and sneered, “Get out of here you faggots.” “It looked like it was going to be a rough summer,” Boyce recalls on the line from New York, where he still lives. “Police were antagonizing [the gay community] and raids had increased. Everybody knew someone who was in trouble in some way or another. It was this gathering feeling of concern, there were too many people who
had a story to tell.” Led by the queens and the transgender community – largely people of colour – the crowd fought back against the police, sparking what came to be known as the Stonewall riots. That night, in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, marked the start of the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for the LGBTQ community worldwide. After years of living as the unjust targets of both police and mainstream society, the LGBTQ community fought back. “It was a city sport to attack people,” Boyce remembers. “And that made us guerrilla fighters.” Just one year later, New York City would be the birthplace of the modern Pride parade. For Boyce, it stands in history as the first time he ever saw the gay flag flying in victory. However, as the Pride movement became more
commercialized, Boyce says it started to feel like the political message was being lost. For almost 30 years, he didn’t participate in Pride. But Orlando changed all of that. On June 12,
49 LGBTQ revellers and their allies, many from Latin communities in Florida, were gunned
down just after last call on a similarly unsuspecting warm summer night at a popular gay nightclub in Orlando. Overnight, the party became political again. The Orlando massacre forced a long, hard look at the oppression and discrimination still facing the LGBTQ community all over the world. For something of this scale and magnitude to occur on the eve of Pride, the annual celebration of the queer community, it immediately threw into question just how important and how necessary Pride still is. “Gays know what it’s like to be hunted. That kind of antagonism led to Stonewall and I think it’s being re-examined, because gay people are starting to realize we face a global crisis,” Boyce says. “There is a premonition that we’re always a target. It never
leaves you, that kind of feeling.” For today’s LGBTQ communities, particularly those of a younger generation living in more progressive and safe countries, these stories seem far removed from their reality. But, the events in Orlando brought that back, ripping off the veil of perceived acceptance and safety to expose the ugly and very real faces of homophobia and transphobia. To some outside the queer community, Pride has been viewed as a showpony act of overindulgence, prompting some to ask why it is necessary. Recently, the hashtag #HeterosexualPride has gone viral, suggesting the original message of Pride and the importance it carries may have been lost somewhere amidst the rainbows and the glitter.

Continued from page P3 West End MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert has long fought for the LGBTQ community of which he is a part, beginning in his home constituency and for the rest of the province. He believes Pride can be both a protest and a celebration. “A protest for equality for all of us, and a celebration for some of us,” he says. “If every day of the week is heterosexual pride day because the assumption is that you should be straight, I think it makes people sometimes consider their privilege.” Chandra Herbert recently travelled to Prince George and Quesnel for Pride celebrations, communities where he says sidelong glances at two men holding hands are still frequent reminders not of how far equality has come, but just how much further it still has to go. In Surrey, the LGBTQ community hosted their first Pride parade this year, and in Maple Ridge rainbow crosswalks have been painted at the gateway to Memorial Peace Park in solidarity with those killed in the attack in Orlando. West End MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert’s private member’s bill to recognize transgender people under BC’s Human Rights Code was passed unanimously this week in the BC legislature. Jennifer Gauthier photo introduced his private member’s bill to recognize trans rights six years ago. This week, the Gender Identity and Expression Human Rights Recognition Act was finally passed with unanimous support in the
legislature – a feat considering four failed previous attempts to get the BC Liberals to support the bill. “We’ve seen the federal conservatives take an aggressive anti-trans stance,” he explains. “They don’t
up behind legal change, making these provisions especially important. “It’s been against the law to be racist [for some time], but as we see, that’s still happening.” Chandra Herbert says

Orlando felt personal. As part of the middle generation in the modern queer community, he says he knows people who have been locked up or institutionalized because of their sexuality or gender identities, and also knows people who have no idea any of that occurred. “I think there’s a huge risk to losing the stories,” he says. “If we’re comfortable, there’s an assumption it’s just always been this way.” As events like Stonewall and icons like Harvey Milk dot the American queer landscape, Chandra Herbert doesn’t feel they were formative moments in his own coming out, or his personal understanding of queer rights in Canada. Instead, he cites early Vancouver activists like ted northe, who in 1958 stood on the steps of the city courthouse (now the Vancouver Art Gallery) dressed in full drag, calling for equality and the end to discrimination. “In the ‘80s, Little Sisters was firebombed, and I’ve been told stories of mobs of men and police carrying out attacks on gay clubs right here in Vancouver,” Chandra Herbert says.

Pioneering LGBTQ activist and lawyer barbara findlay (on right) is the subject of filmmaker Becca Plucer’s documentary In Particular, barbara findlay. Jennifer Gauthier photo
Gay rights activist Martin Boyce stands in front of the Stonewall Inn in New York City, where he was a part of the 1969 Stonewall riots, which helped ignite the fight for LGBTQ rights around the world. Alfonso Iandiorio photo Many of these stories are buried with those lost to the AIDS crisis, or slowly disappearing with an aging population. Filmmaker Becca Plucer went looking for those stories in her directorial debut, the OUT TV documentary
exploring the life and career of BC queer feminist lawyer, barbara findlay. In Particular, barbara findlay screened to a packed Rio Theatre back in April, something Plucer says she wasn’t sure would happen, unsure of the relevance a
film like this would have in Vancouver’s current queer climate. “I think once upon a time, Pride meant visibility,” she says. “We are in a passing of the torch to generations and I think there’s discomfort right
now because it’s evolving.” “There’s still a momentum to Pride, but who’s setting the rules of it?” Plucer imagines a more cohesive Vancouver LGBTQ community, with engaged mentors driving leadership in order to
bridge the divide between generations and other communities within the queer identity. “I sort of went looking for a blueprint for social change,” Plucer explains of her journey making the film. “What I really like about barbara is what she said in the film […] you need a community base, you need a public education campaign and you need a legal strategy.” “And, the more you learn, the more you learn what you don’t know.” For Boyce, having lived through the last 50 years of progress of LGBTQ rights,
the one truth learned then, is still relevant now. “The one thing I learned from Stonewall, is that no one is going to give you your freedom, you have to win it. They can give you your liberty on paper, but your freedom…” he trails off. “The saving grace of the whole thing is that they’ve done something for us, these people who died in Orlando,” Boyce declares. “Stonewall was the beginning, but Orlando is not the end.” 6 GRX LF;7%B4!F;J DF;DF;F findlay’ screens again as part ofVQFF, Aug. 15 at Cineplex Odeon InternationalVillage. Saturday, July 30, 11am It’s no secret the Vancouver Dyke March has seen a difficult year. Rumours flew earlier this year about the existence of its board and whether the resources were in place to continue the festival for 2016, but board member Christine Osgood says the show will go on. “Our new board is taking an active role to promote the Vancouver Dyke March’s social media presence and working to make the sure the march and the festival are as inclusive as possible,” Osgood says. Cicely-Belle Blain of BLM says the group is excited to participate in what they consider a show of ally-ship and concrete action in supporting black communities in Vancouver. “We are excited to show up as a group of black folks and queer people of colour to ‘visibilize’ our communities and celebrate the diversity of queerness in this city,” says Blain. As the march winds down Commerical Drive to Grandview Park, a host of queercentric vendors will dot the lawn, along with live music, DJs, drag performances and ASL interpretation. Now in its 13th year, the Vancouver Dyke March works hard to retain many of the same values Pride did in its early days: a family-friendly event designed to build on the traditions of community. As Osgood, and a new generation take the reins, the women who blazed the trail before them are always close in mind. “It’s time to give back and support the community that has supported me,” she says. 6,FXBV42>; 3/#> NF;B& FX@ 0>97%2F! If you’re going to indulge this year at Pride, get in the spirit with a Pride-themed craft beer or cocktail.
RAINBOW DREAMSICAL
Ryn Broz, founder of the popular Queers & Beers monthly East Van craft beer meet-up at The Cobalt, wanted to get into the brew game and figured she’d invite her friends along for the tasting. “I wanted it to be the gayest beer ever,” she laughs. “The beer we made turned out a bit different than what we had planned, but that’s brewing.” Dubbed the Rainbow Dreamsical, the wheat-based
brew is both creamy and fruity, clocking in at 5.0 per cent ABV and boasts a modest 15 IBUs. The collaboration with Real Cask Brewing, spearheaded by Broz and Adam Chatburn, went down at Callister Brewing Company, the co-op brew spot where Broz says small-batch, innovative beers are encouraged in an effort to support independent and beginner brewers like herself. Rainbow Dreamiscal will be on tap at Callister and The Cobalt throughout Pride weekend, until the kegs run dry.
HARVEY MILK
Kaitlyn Stewart, bar manager at Royal Dinette, is known for getting
creative. Incorporating Portuguese milk liqueur, Stewart has fashioned a new cocktail with a Pride theme. The Harvey Milk was inspired by the LGBTQ pioneer of the same name, the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California, who Stewart considers one of the biggest and most significant gay advocates of the last 50 years. Stewart collaborated with Absolut Vodka to create the cocktail, infusing her homemade liqueur with blueberries to create a shade of purple in an homage to the queer community. Swing by Royal Dinette this Pride weekend to visit Stewart and put your lips on Harvey Milk. W

Cat Empire welcome all to the dancefloor
GREGORY ADAMS @gregoryadamsbc
Looking at the Cat Empire’s social media presence, you’d figure that famed Australian genre blenders are also big gamers. A recent Tweet posted before the band left for their current Canadian tour pictures a meeting between a couple of longtime members and brightly-coloured Pokémon Go feather flapper Pidgey. According to an Instagram post uploaded just minutes before the Westender receives a call from trumpeter/ vocalist Harry James Angus, the act had been enjoying some backstage time at Quebec’s Le Festif! festival playing vintage console classic Super Mario World. Angus doesn’t know about any of this, mind you, as he’s still trying to master basic telecommunication. “I can’t even work this fucking phone,” the musician says with a laugh of not understanding the mechanics of his hotel phone, adding that this is the fourth interview in a row that he’s done by resorting to “kind of talking into the speaker.” Of his bandmate’s advanced tech abilities, Angus admits that bassist Ryan Monro is augmenting his reality on tour by undertaking an international Pokémon spree. The trumpeter, however, isn’t as interested in catching them all. “I was never good at that stuff, I missed my chance,” he says with a sigh that somehow reflects both disappointment and deep satisfaction. “I could start practicing now, but I think of all the hours I saved that I wasn’t playing video games.” Considering the Cat
Aussie party-starters the Cat Empire play back-to-back shows at the Commodore Ballroom, Aug. 2 and 3. Contributed photo Empire’s many achievements since first forming in the late ‘90s, from recording seven full-length albums to traveling through venues around the world, you can’t blame the guy for wanting to put his digits onto his brass instrument instead of a Nintendo controller. Currently, the fusionists are out on the road promoting the recently released Rising with the Sun, an 11-song balancing act that brings together standard jazz sounds with sweltering cumbia rhythms, peaceful reggae grooves, and the overjoyed bustle of a midnight soul revue. Oftentimes, this happens within the same song. Though Angus notes the
Cat Empire casts its net wide, 15 years of performing together has led to a more organic blend than the direct genre exercises of album’s past. “On our early records, it was this thing where every song was from a different place. One song sounds like it’s from Eastern Europe, and all of a sudden you’re in Jamaica. That was kind of our gimmick, and it was really fun for us because we were interested in the music of the world,” Angus says, adding that they’ve since moved beyond simple song-to-song eclecticism to make less definable arrangements. “It’s worn thin, the idea of borrowing and stealing from other cultures and cover-
ing their music. The last two records, we’ve really tried to make music which sounds exotic still, but it can’t be pinned down to any place in particular.” For proof, the electronicsspiked thud of Rising with the Sun opener “Wolves” initially plays out as four-on-the-floor heavy EDM-Pop, but the pack of Aussies quickly add Latin funk-inspired brass and turntablist Jamshid “DJ Jumps” Khadiwhala’s various swirling samples to the template. “Bulls” traffics in both rock and rocksteady rhythms, while “Midnight” is a hip-swerver that wraps old school hip-hop scratches around a Studio One-styled reggae organ. But while Rising with the
Sun still presents a sort of musical tourism, Angus and co. are conscious of what they’re cribbing. The band hadn’t always contemplated the implications of cultural appropriation, but the trumpeter feels it’s more than willing to have a dialogue on what’s respectful and what’s ill-informed pastiche. “There are certain things that I now believe are really weird,” he explains. “One is singing in a Jamaican accent if you’re not Jamaican. I’d never really thought about it when we started: whenever you do a reggae song you just slip into a slight, pseudo-Jamaican accent. Now I think that’s so strange.” As it stands, “Midnight”
finds Angus and wife Emily Lubitz using unaffected but effective falsettos as they become king and queen on the dancefloor. The vocalist explains: “that song is about losing yourself in dancing. It’s a feeling which I find very hard to attain. It’s a feeling of when you’ve been dancing for so long that you don’t think about whether you look cool or not anymore.” Another united number on the new album is “Bataclan,” a song co-vocalist Felix Riebel wrote in response to last November’s mass shooting at an Eagles of Death Metal concert at Paris’ Bataclan venue, which claimed close to 90 lives. It’s a spot that the Cat Empire had themselves played in 2007 and 2012, leaving the group to wonder a truly horrific “what if?” “It felt very close to home, even though it actually wasn’t physically close to home,” Angus posits. “It’s a place we’d been, and it’s also something we do every night, being onstage at a concert and seeing happy faces looking up.” While it begins with a mournful ring of brass, “Bataclan” turns into both a tribute for the fallen (“nothing but the sun can black out what’s been done”) and a swinging rally cry for the survivors (“tonight we’ll beat the drums louder than our pain”). It’s a song that crosses the spectrum of emotion the way the Cat Empire mixes musical styles. After all, the dancefloor is a place where everyone is welcome. Early Music Vancouver celebrates the best of Bach KELSEY KLASSEN @KelseyKlassen
If you’re going to throw a classical music festival, you want Johann Sebastian Bach as your headliner. At least according to Early Music Vancouver artistic director Matthew White. A composer with the divine virtuosity of Prince and the commercial appeal of Coldplay, Bach is not only a rockstar of the early and classical music scenes, says White, but a name that transcends those worlds, as well. “Bach is obviously a sort of early music composer who everybody in the early music world knows, but he’s also a composer who appeals to people from every musical interest, every genre,”White explains, of the 18th-century German great. White is the driving force behind Vancouver’s inaugural Bach Festival, running in the heart of the city at Christ

Billed as a veritable best of Bach, the festival is the first summer classical music festival of its size to take place in Vancouver since the closure of MusicFest in 2013.

For White and other classic music programmers, the void left by MusicFest – an inclusive, century-spanning music festival held at multiple venues downtown – was palpable.
“When MusicFest folded in 2013, I think a lot of classical music lovers in Vancouver were really disappointed,” says White. “Early Music Vancouver had been a really big part of MusicFest Vancouver,
and when it folded we still continued – and continued successfully – at UBC, but I think it still bothered all of us that we’d had to give up on this idea of a slightly wider appeal-type festival in down-
town Vancouver.” Looking for a way to resurrect a similarly diverse classical event while also honouring Early Music Vancouver’s mandate of presenting music performed on rare period instruments in a historically-informed context, White felt there was only one man who could tie it all together. “The thing that’s amazing about Bach is there’s lots of composers who have written lots of great music, but I don’t think there’s any other composer who’s written so much great music in so many different sizes, you know what I mean?” White says. “The whole universe can be the Bach Cello Suites, or it can be in The Art of the Fugue. And then he’s also just as capable of writing disarming, incredibly beautiful stuff for huge orchestra

If you grew up in a decade where your teacher would occasionally wheel a television cart into the classroom and pop in a VHS tape from the National Film Board for a few minutes of peace and Can-con, you’re probably familiar with that animated log driver “birling down and down the white water…” That classic film – The Log Driver’sWaltz – is one of the National Film Board of Canada’s most iconic works. It’s right up there with The Cat Came Back and The Sweater. But that particular trio of works is only the tip of a giant iceberg of 13,000 films that extends back to 1939, when the NFB was founded to develop and nurture what NFB Commissioner Claude Joli-Coeur calls “Canada’s visual fabric” in a recent interview. Since those pioneering days, the NFB has been churning out all manner of cinema – animated, live-action, documentaries, and shorts – as part of its mandate to “foster an understanding of what Canada is about, and make Canada known to the balance of the world,” says Joli-Coeur. “The mandate has been

in the NFB Act since 1939, and it’s barely changed,” he says. “It’s how that mandate has been fulfilled that has changed over the years, with the evolution of the different kinds of creation, the emergence of the private sector, and the cuts that happened in 1996.” Those cuts slashed the NFB’s budget by 30 per cent, and led to the film board’s decision to focus primarily on animation and documentaries, says JoliCoeur. Currently, the NFB produces an average of 50 films per year. Recent highlights include 2014’s Everything Will Be, in which filmmaker Julia Kwan explores the sweeping changes facing Vancouver’s Chinatown, and Ninth Floor, Vancouverite Mina Shum’s haunting examination of the 1969 Sir George Williams riot. Both films screened to packed houses at consecutive editions of the Vancouver International Film Festival. And now, the NFB invites
you – yes, you! – to screen their gargantuan body of work whenever and wherever you want: at home, on the bus, during lunch breaks, when you should be working... It’s the binge-watching age, after all, so the NFB is diligently digitizing their archives for widespread consumption. Of the aforementioned 13,000 films, more than 3,200 are already digitized and available for streaming via the NFB’s web site, various YouTube channels, partner sites like Canada Screens, and the NFB Films app – all free of charge. “Even though we have recorded more than 80 million screenings of our films since we launched the platform in 2009, our biggest challenge is to get our stuff known and that every Canadian discovers the content and accesses it,” says Joli-Coeur. For Canadians who love the stories behind the onscreen stories, there’s the
Making Movie History app, which the NFB rolled out in May. The app facilitates access to the short films in the Making Movie History: A Portrait in 61 Parts project, in which pioneering filmmakers and producers discuss the challenges they faced building the NFB into the prolific institution it is today. Legendary BC filmmakers Anne Wheeler, Mort Ransen, and Bonnie Sherr Klein are featured in the project; it can be viewed online or via the iTunes store. The app isn’t the only way that the NFB is demonstrat-

fine meta-fashion, things are starting to feel “episodic.” But, this is Star Trek and eventually someone or some “thing” shows up to ruin the party. A ruthless alien named Krall (an unrecognizable Elba) launches a devastating attack against the intrepid crew, leaving them separated and/or ma-
rooned. This plot development leads to some of the film’s best moments as the script has a real chance to breathe and plenty of amusing character dynamics ensue. In many ways, the movie is a throwback to the original show and the vision crafted by creator Gene
performing Bach’s aweinspiring Mass in B Minor (Aug. 5); Grammy-nominated violinist Monica Huggett and oboist Gonzalo Ruiz reuniting for their revolutionary interpretation of Bach’s Orchestral Suites for a Prince (Aug. 12), Davitt Moroney’s recital of Bach’s “greatest puzzle,” The Art of the Fugue (Aug. 3); past Leipzig International Bach Competition winner Beiliang Zhu performing Bach’s transportive Cello Suites (Aug. 11); and French pianist and
improvisational genius Dan Tepfer returning for a second time with his jazz-influenced GoldbergVariations/Variations (Aug. 2). “Dan Tepfer is a jazz pianist who has been extremely successful with his Goldberg Variations/ Variations program, and actually brought it here to Vancouver about three years ago,” White explains. “The idea is to make connections between seemingly separate musical genres and his show is almost sold out
now. People sort of wonder, ‘Why are you starting a period instrument festival with a modern jazz pianist on a Steinway?’ Because there’s nothing really period about that,” he laughs. “But one of the things about Bach that people forget is he was one of the greatest improvisors to ever walk the earth. He was just a monster, monster musical improvisor who was capable of making really difficult, complicated things up on the spot.”

On International Women’s Day 2016, the NFB announced that, going forward, 50 per cent of all NFB films would now be directed by women. Why the gender parity? “To paraphrase our prime minister, because it’s 2016, and it’s about time that it happens,” says Joli-Coeur. Last month, Joli-Coeur accepted the Please Adjust Your Set Award at Women in Film and Television Vancouver’s 2016 Spotlight Gala. That particular award Roddenberry; that is, until the action takes over. Epic space battles and intimate fight sequences have always been an essential part of the Trek universe but Beyond crams so much generic action into the story that is starts to feel bloated. Director Justin Lin, taking over duties from J.J. Abrams, And for those who think Early Music Vancouver might run out of shows to present if it themes a festival around Bach again next year, White invokes the name of another great who keeps on giving. “There’s something new written about Bach every week, and that’s part of the reason why putting a Bach festival on makes so much sense. He still captures people’s imagination in the same way that Shakespeare does, in a way. In fact, that’s

@WholeNourishBC At one point or another (if you haven’t already), you are probably going to plant mint, or be gifted some when someone you know gets an overwhelming amount. You basically become an unwanted mint factory, and you can’t give that stuff away fast enough. But did you know that this overbearing herb has many uses and talents? So much so that after reading this article, you may never give another dirty look to a crowd of mint again. You might even rejoice in its slightly unwieldy presence. There are three different main types of mint: spearmint, peppermint and pennyroyal. You are probably quite familiar with the first two, whether it be as a flavouring source for chew-
ing gum or toothpaste, or some sort of culinary purpose. But it is oh-so-much more than that! Planting mint will attract good bugs for your garden and repel the nuisance bugs that you don’t necessarily want lingering around, like ants. Mint can be stored like you would flowers, in a cup of water in your fridge or counter, and will keep for weeks if you change the water regularly. And like most herbs, mint can also be brought back to life by submerging it in water. Putting a bouquet of mint in your kitchen will fill your space with the sweet aroma, and keep the handy herb close by for any culinary or medicinal purposes, as it is widely known to be a great palate cleanser and appetizer. Here are just a few more reasons to start loving yourself some mint.
DIGESTION
Mint promotes digestion and soothes your stomach during indigestion or even inflammation. Mint activates glands which secrete digestive enzymes, and in turn facilitates digestion.
HEADACHE
The smell of mint oil or freshly crushed mint will help relieve a headache surprisingly quickly. I personally always carry some peppermint oil in my purse just in case, as it can also be very invigorating if you are feeling a little fatigued.
NAUSEA
Similar to relieving headaches, mint also has the same effect on nausea – the refreshing strong scent is almost immediately effective. Motion sickness? Take some mint.
SKIN
Mint juice, as it turns out, is a very effective skin cleanser and is soothing when applied directly to the skin. It is also great for relief of bug bites such as mosquitos. Not only that, but its anti-inflammatory properties help bring down swelling.
ORAL CARE
This comes as no surprise to most of us, since mint flavour is often marketed to us as a breath cleanser, but it also inhibits harmful bacterial
Mint and seasonal berries make for a refreshing and healthy summer drink. iStock photo growth inside your mouth and cleanses the tongue and teeth.
CULINARY USES
Yes, mojitos are delicious but you can get more versatile in the kitchen with this fine herb. Add a bit of freshness to a salad, dress up your water and even bring pizzazz to your desserts by simply adding this humble herb that’s taking over your garden. W

Ask Mish: Help, my ex isn’t getting the hint! Sex with Mish Way
@MyszkaWay
I’m a 25-year-old man who recently broke up with my girlfriend of five months. We originally met on Tinder and were not in the same social groups at all. We had a great time but she just was not right for me. It’s been a month since we broke up and she has tried really hard to remain friends with my friends and family. We have stopped talking, but it’s to the point where she is trying to rub it in my face over social media. She even posted a photo of her and my sister partying the other night and tagged me in it. I guess they ran into each other at the bar, but come on. Her behavior has not calmed down, as I thought it might, but is only getting more intense. What is she doing? How do I tell her this bothers me without her flying off the handle? Technically she is not doing anything wrong, but this is annoying and insane. According to Urban Dictionary the definition of a “psycho hose beast” is as follows: “a person who is so needy they create a force
Westender.com
akin to gravity, that pulls everyone’s attention, energy, and cash into their gaping maw.” Ignoring the cash part, I believe what you have on your hands here is a true blue psycho hose beast. Thanks, Stacy! I don’t even own a gun, let alone many guns that would necessitate an entire rack. It is one thing to want to remain friends with your group of buddies, who she perhaps got close to while you were dating. There is nothing wrong with that at all as long as it’s respectful to you and done in a way that acknowledges your break up. Some of my best guy friends have been birthed from my ex’s friends. I never rubbed these new found relationships in the mug of my ex, and I kept my distance until things were cool between everyone involved. Then again, when I was in my early 20s, Instagram was not a thing and Facebook was only for the socially savvy. “Tagging someone” was only part of a game you played on the soccer field at recess. Now, two things could be happening here. She could be trying to mess with you and get your attention in the most pathetic way possible, OR she could just be that obtuse. I’m
What do you do when your ex keeps hanging out with your friends? iStock photo leaning towards the former, if only for the fact that she took a photo of herself and your sister at the bar and tagged you.The tagging meant she wanted you to see it. Duh. But did she want you to see it for malicious reasons or because she is clueless to anyone’s feelings other than her own?
Was she kind of a dumbdumb when you dated? Did she seem particularly unaware of her surroundings? Did she take up two spaces when parking her Kia? Was she unable to compute why giving her 55-year-old, newly divorced and depressed aunt a joke card about being a spinster was pretty rude?
Then, you have a stupid idiot on your hands, in which case, talking to her about how her behavior is inappropriate will be a lot easier. Just call her up and explain yourself in a calm voice. If she had no idea this would make you angry, she will stop. Stupid idiots are usually nice guys at heart.
However, if we are dealing with a manipulative, psycho hose beast, then trying to communicate with this monster might be a little tougher. I feel for you because this kind of despicable selfish behavior is the work of a demented genius. A true mean girl. She has concocted the perfect way to get under your skin, scratch around a bit, spray paint “fuck you for dumping me” on your bones and then pass out, drunk with power. I hate her for you. Annoying does not begin to describe this. But yelling or spazzing out – any sudden movements – are only going to send her into a rage. You can’t feed the beast. You have to coax her in with a treat and then lay down the bear trap. If I were you, I would call her up and explain, again very calmly, that you do not mind her being in touch with your friends, but that you do not need her to tag, comment and make you aware of every move she makes with them. Also, ask your sister what happened before you launch into any family stuff. Facts always trump feelings and you need to get your bullet points ready before dealing with your Stacy. Party on, Wayne. Good luck. W

An Interesting Opportunity is definitely in your vicinity. It may slink tantalizingly close to you in the coming days, even whisper your name from afar. But I doubt that it will knock on your door. It probably won’t call you seven times on the phone or flash you a big smile or send you an engraved invitation. So you should make yourself alert for the Interesting Opportunity’s unobtrusive behavior. It could be a bit shy or secretive or modest. Once you notice it, you may have to come on strong – you know, talk to it sweetly or ply it with treats.

HOME IMPROVEMENTS
Free Will Astrology
The people of many cultures have imagined the sun god as possessing masculine qualities. But in some traditions, the Mighty Father is incomplete without the revitalizing energies of the Divine Mother. The Maoris, for example, believe that every night the solar deity has to marinate in her nourishing uterine bath. Otherwise he wouldn’t be strong enough to rise in the morning. And how does this apply to you? Well, you currently have resemblances to the weary old sun as it dips below the horizon. I suspect it’s time to recharge your powers through an extended immersion in the deep, dark waters of the primal feminine.

[Editor’s note: The counsel offered in the following oracle was channeled from the Goddess by Rob Brezsny. If you have any problems with it, direct your protests to the Queen Wow, not Brezsny.] It’s time to get more earthy and practical about practicing your high ideals and spiritual values. Translate your loftiest intentions into your most intimate behavior. Ask yourself, “How does Goddess want me to respond when my co-worker pisses me off?”, or “How would Goddess like me to brush my teeth and watch TV and make love?” For extra credit, get a t-shirt that says, “Goddess was my co-pilot, but we crash-landed in the wilderness and I was forced to eat her.”
Be alert for white feathers gliding on the wind. Before eating potato chips, examine each one to see if it bears a likeness of Rihanna or the Virgin Mary. Keep an eye out, too, for portents like robots wearing dreadlocked wigs or antique gold buttons lying in the gutter or senior citizens cursing at invisible Martians. The appearance of anomalies like these will be omens that suggest you will soon be the recipient of crazy good fortune. But if you would rather not wait around for chance events to trigger your good luck, simply make it your fierce intention to generate it. Use your optimism-fueled willpower and your flair for creative improvisation. You will have abundant access to these talents in the coming weeks.
You have just begun your big test. How are you doing so far? According to my analysis, the preliminary signs suggest that you have a good chance of proving the old maxim, “If it doesn’t make you so crazy that you put your clothes on inside-out and try to kiss the sky until you cry, it will help you win one of your biggest arguments with Life.” In fact, I suspect we will ultimately see you undergo at least one miraculous and certifiably melodramatic transformation. A wart on your attitude could dissolve, for example. A luminous visitation may heal one of your blind spots. You might find a satisfactory substitute for kissing the sky.
For many years, my occupation was “starving artist.” I focused on improving my skills as a writer and musician, even though those activities rarely earned me any money. To ensure my survival, I worked as little as necessary at low-end jobs -- scrubbing dishes at restaurants, digging ditches for construction companies, delivering newspapers in the middle of the night, and volunteering for medical experiments. During the long hours spent doing tasks that had little meaning to me, I worked diligently to remain upbeat. One trick that worked well was imagining future scenes when I would be engaged in exciting creative work that paid me a decent wage. It took a while, but eventually those visions materialized in my actual life. I urge you to try this strategy in the coming months, Libra. Harness your mind’s eye in the service of generating the destiny you want to inhabit.
You have every right to celebrate your own personal Independence Day sometime soon. In fact, given the current astrological omens, you’d be justified in embarking on a full-scale emancipation spree in the coming weeks. It will be prime time to seize more freedom and declare more autonomy and build more self-sufficiency. Here’s an important nuance to the work you have ahead of you: Make sure you escape the tyranny of not just the people and institutions that limit your sovereignty, but also the voices in your own head that tend to hinder your flow.
Of all the forbidden fruits that you fantasize about, which one is your favorite? Among the intriguing places you consider to be outside of your comfort zone, which might inspire you to redefine the meaning of “comfort”? The coming weeks will be a favorable time to reconfigure your relationship with these potential catalysts. And while you’re out on the frontier dreaming of fun experiments, you might also want to flirt with other wild cards and strange attractors. Life is in the mood to tickle you with useful surprises.
You have a special talent for accessing wise innocence. In some ways you’re virginal, fresh, and raw, and in other ways you’re mature, seasoned, and well-developed. I hope you will regard this not as a confusing paradox but rather as an exotic strength. With your inner child and your inner mentor working in tandem, you could accomplish heroic feats of healing. Their brilliant collaboration could also lead to the mending of an old rift.
“Where is everybody when I need them?” Even if you haven’t actually spoken those words recently, I’m guessing the voices in your head have whispered them. But from what I can tell, that complaint will soon be irrelevant. It will no longer match reality. Your allies will start offering more help and resources. They may not be perfectly conscientious in figuring out how to be of service, but they’ll be pretty good. Here’s what you can do to encourage optimal results: 1. Purge your low, outmoded expectations. 2. Open your mind and heart to the possibility that people can change. 3. Humbly ask – out loud, not just in the privacy of your imagination – for precisely what you want.
Millions of Pisceans less fortunate than you won’t read this horoscope. Uninformed about the rocky patch of Yellow Brick Road that lies just ahead, they may blow a gasket or get a flat tire. You, on the other hand, will benefit from my oracular foreshadowing, as well as my inside connections with the Lords of Funky Karma. You will therefore be likely to drive with relaxed caution, keeping your vehicle unmarred in the process. That’s why I’m predicting that although you may not arrive speedily at the next leg of your trip, you will do so safely and in style.
