I just had to write in about how disappointed I was that, in EastVan on Saturday night, a full day after the “big snowfall”, barely anyone had made the effort to clear their sidewalks for pedestrians. I had to walk home from Nanaimo to Chinatown after a work Christmas party, and it was slippery suicide! It took me over an hour to navigate in the dark – especially the hills that run between Commerical and the hellish carscape that is Clark. What happened to doing your civic duty? Or has

So, I live at 2095 Beach Avenue. Each year, one of the residents takes out the Christmas lights and decorates the hedges and gardens in magical red LED lights. I say magical because we get so much positive feedback from the neighbours and passersby. This year, the lights go up for maybe three nights and then are stolen overnight, extension cords and everything.Terry spent almost all day putting them up.What

kind of person steals Christmas lights, which have provided joy to so many? Sad commentary at this time, when so many of us give to those who have less. Humbug! –Anonymous

YOUR CITY

Greetings from Hell (AKA Maui) Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown @GrantLawrence

Maui in December: Sounds awesome, right? But if it’s your friend / co-worker / neighbour / frienemy who’s taking the holiday, and boasting nonstop about it on social media while you shiver here in Vancouver, it can be more than a little annoying. Well, here’s the flipside, for those of you with a taste for some sweet schadenfreude. Imagine, if you will, saving up for a Maui vacation for two years, booking the trip back in January, and making it extra special by taking three generations of family. Now imagine being woken up by your jetlagged kids at 5:20am Hawaii time, then pulling back the curtains on the lanai to groggily stare out at palm trees bending in hurricane-force winds against a charcoal sky as sheets of rain pelt the windows. Then pretend you’re Bill Murray in Groundhog Day when it happens the next morning, and the morning after that, and the morning after that. If you can conjure such a thing, you’ll have a pretty good feel for our recent family vacation. Go ahead and revel in our bank-breaking sogginess, but you have to admit: There’s something downright cruel about Vancouverites spending thousands of dollars to fly 4,356 kilometres to escape the rain, only to arrive

Grant Lawrence and son, experiencing some rainy Maui misery. Jill Barber photo to much more of it. Hey, we made the best of it. What choice did we have? Stay in the hotel room all day? I did that on a vacation in the Dominican Republic when, again, it rained the whole time. I ended up watching a five-day-marathon of Little House on the Prairie in Spanish. The hot tub at our hotel was still fun in the rain. We even met someone in the tub who voted for Trump. She was very anti-Obama, saying, “Who is Obama, anyway?

I mean, where does he even come from?” My wife responded, “Um… Hawaii, actually,” which was followed by the Trump supporter’s stunned silence. Just as the weather was finally starting to clear up, a middle-aged couple from Minnesota arrived in the suite above us. Oddly, they kept their curtains drawn tight all day, emerging only at night. They were loud talkers, but we didn’t think much of it – that is, until the man, who resembled

cartoonist Robert Crumb, got absolutely and repeatedly wasted. Drunk as a skunk, he’d slur abusive remarks at his wife at the top of his lungs, then beg for sex and “a baby,” all the while flicking his Marlboro butts down onto our lanai (in a non-smoking resort). His lunatic ravings and smashing and banging went on all night long, which thoroughly freaked us out: I barricaded the doors and my 11-yearold nephew cried. It was like a cross between National Lampoon’sVacation and Cape Fear. When the couple finally checked out a few days later (after repeated run-ins with security), we were shocked to learn they were on their honeymoon. My sister finally had enough of it, treating her family to a one-night stay in a big, fancy resort a little further south, in what is typically the sunnier part of Maui. Except it poured there, too, and the hotel’s deluxe pool was closed due to a Code Brown (that’s resortspeak for a kid taking a dump in the pool.) But their room had a lovely view of a gigantic construction site. We did eventually manage to capture the “Aloha spirit” of the islands, and it was the time spent with each other that mattered most: snorkelling with my 15-year-old nephew, a sunset dinner with Mom, watching the cousins play in the sand, and hearing my 11-month-old daughter say “Mama” for the first time. All that, and listening to my three-year-old yelling, “It’s raining AGAIN?” W

‘Being Hungry Sucks’ strives to feed thousands MICHAEL WHITE @westendervan

Vancouver restaurateur and philanthropist Mark Brand has been shuttling back and forth across the West Coast since September, when he began serving as a civic-innovation fellow at Stanford University’s “the d.school” (Institute of Design) in Northern California. There, he imparts the knowledge acquired from his efforts to greatly reduce hunger and unemployment among the Downtown Eastside’s homeless and addicted populations. But he remains in daily collaboration with his colleagues at Mark Brand Inc., which owns and operates various enterprises, including the eateries Save on Meats and the Diamond, craft brewer Persephone, and charitable initiatives A Better Life Foundation and the Greasy Spoon fundraising dinner series. The latter invites celebrated chefs to create a four-course meal inspired by diner fare, with proceeds going to the community’s most vulnerable. Brand returns to Vancouver this week to preside over the 22nd edition of Greasy Spoon (Dec. 19) and to be on the ground as he and others rally for seasonal contributions to Being Hungry Sucks, another charity effort, which aims to raise funds equivalent to 50,000 free meals – distributed via community organizations including Megaphone magazine street vendors, the Vancouver Women’s Health Collective,

Youth Unlimited, and others – before Jan. 1. A Better Life will match donations up to $15,000. Last year’s drive raised $138,486, equivalent to 39,567 meals. (A Better Life’s annual goal is to raise enough funds to provide a minimum of 350,000 free meals in the Downtown Eastside.) “Achieving upward mobility requires many things to fall in place, and all of those things need to happen with a full belly,” says Brand. “Being hungry does suck, and [the initiative’s name] helps all of us to understand, in simple language, the plight of those less fortunate. I speak about this often, and I use the analogy of missing a meal and how that makes you feel. I walk people through their inability during that time, and then ask them how it would be to try to navigate that situation with no money, no fixed address and little to no opportunity.” Despite the best efforts of his company and many others, and ever-increasing awareness about those hardest hit by Vancouver’s rapid gentrification, Brand admits the plight of DTES residents is now “much worse, and not for lack of effort. It’s heartbreaking to see the dozens of agencies work their fingers bloody and not gain much traction. Our time is now to get together as a community and push hard for safety and opportunity for all of our citizens. It’s our duty.” • Learn more and make a donation at BeingHungrySucks.ca. Our Digs: Kelsey Klassen and the ‘Westender’ office Jennifer Scott A Good Chick to Know

@Jennifer_AGCTK

Here at Westender, we’re closing out the year with a lot of amazing changes, so we want to share some of the fun with you this week. Normally, My Digs tours the amazing pads of our city’s most stylish peeps, featuring some of the coolest layouts, décor details and uses of space Vancouver has to offer. This week, however, we’re inviting you into our digs, to check out where we’re at and what our style is all about. We somewhat recently moved our “home” from South Granville to the hip and artistically booming Yukon and 5th neighbourhood, and we’re seriously loving our new spot; with a massive openconcept layout and stellar wood-beam detailing throughout the building, the new office is definitely a step in the right style direction. We’ve checked in with Westender’s ultra-chic new editor, Kelsey Klassen –

The décor: Cubicle chic. Underneath the usual piles of papers – yes, I tidied up for the photos – I also keep a few books for design inspiration, as well as some fun accessories from shops like The Cross, and an ever-changing array of plants and flowers to bring the outside in.

whom you may also know as the woman behind the reins of VITA Daily and VITA magazine – and had the chance to scout out her office set-up. Occupants: Editor Kelsey Klassen and the Westender team, as well as the staff of Vancouver Courier, Business inVancouver, REW.ca, VITA, The Growler, and other awesome Glacier Media publications. What is it? A spacious, nicely renovated single-storey office with high wood-beam ceilings, clean finishings and a sweet kitchen. Major selling feature: Its proximity to coffee shops, the seawall, and the hustle and bustle of Olympic Village, as well as lunch saviours like Whole Foods on Cambie and the retail therapy of Main Street. It’s also very central – on a good day, I can get to work from my house in Strathcona in about eight minutes, and to most interviews and events in about 10.

Westender editor Kelsey Klassen at her desk. Dan Toulgoet photo The first thing we changed: When you share a space like this, you can’t really go crazy with your décor. We have a heavily tagged vintage Westender box, though, that was rescued from the streets and has been with the paper for years, which currently sits next to my desk. I have a feeling it’s against the rules. The feature we brag about: How new everything is.

It’s really a privilege to work in a space designed for what we do. That one conversation piece: The retro beer-vending machine in the kitchen. It’s a relic that our staff photographer brought in, which he keeps stocked with craft beer for those late nights at the office – when it works.

The story behind the collectibles: They’re just little things that help brighten up the space. You can’t see my embarrassing magnet collection in the photos, but it includes places that my closest colleagues have visited lately – we have a tradition of bringing each other magnets from vacation – and a hilarious baby photo of my husband. Downsides: The neighbourhood has a lot of industrial buildings, so there’s not a lot of green space in the immediate vicinity. And the office is so long that I have to walk what feels like half a football field to get to the bathrooms! But when you sit at a desk all day, you certainly don’t

mind an excuse to stretch your legs. Neighbourhood haunts: Terra Breads with the VITA team, R&B Brewing with the Westender crew, and places like Big Rock and Bao Down for birthdays and special events. Fun fact: Big Rock Brewing has a very handy electric-car charger in the back, which keeps my interview mobile – AKA my Nissan Leaf – in juice. Favourite office activity: This will sound super nerdy, but staff meetings. I have the pleasure of working with some amazingly creative people, and I always leave our planning sessions inspired. Also, one of the biggest pluses of sharing the space with other papers is that we get to mingle with other writers and editors and chit-chat about life and politics and our respective beats each day. Some interesting collaborations have grown out of that, including some fun podcasts on the company’s Press Play network. • For more photos, head to Westender.com W

Crowdfunded fashion is now more about customers than cash Aileen Lalor Style File

@AileenLalor

The original purpose of Internet crowdfunding was to raise money from a crowd to fund a project (the clue is in the name). But the medium has evolved over the years to become a tool for creating buzz around a product, a way of building a community, and a chance for customers to get involved in product development.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR BACKERS?

Crowdfunding backers love to feel like they’re participating in something new and exciting. “You need to be in constant conversation with your customer base, always there for them to answer questions,” says Vancouverite Gary Chang, who has just launched Skye Footwear via Kickstarter. “You can create relationships and connections, which is something a big-box brand can’t do.” San Francisco’s Peak Design – an award-winning camera bag and accessories company – has run six campaigns and raised more than $13 million. It has two people working full time to answer up to 400 enquiries a day during a Kickstarter. “Our customers are so hungry for product details that we can feed them informa-

Westender.com

tion non-stop,” explains Adam Saraceno, the brand’s chief marketing officer. “With the website, we wouldn’t put more than a couple of bullets. For Kickstarter, people want pictures, videos and live hangouts. It’s part of what gives them a sense of ownership.” Backers also get the opportunity to be involved in the development of a product. For example, Knix Wear – a brand that made its name on Kickstarter with seamless athletic bras and underwear – introduced a padded version of its Evolution bra and different colours as a direct result of interaction with its backers, says founder Joanna Griffiths. Some brands will offer weird and wonderful experiences in exchange for high donations. That’s not KnixWear’s approach. “In the early days we tried to be creative – backers could give $1,000 for a photoshoot – but we realised that’s not what people want. They just want to be first,” says Griffiths. And, says Saraceno, “pie-in-the-sky” campaigns can be more hassle than they’re worth. “They’re tempting – maybe some rich dude will want to pay $5,000 to come see his bag being made – but the fulfilment is a nightmare and ultimately these things are just a distraction from your actual product.”

HARD WORK TO FOLLOW THROUGH

Brands need to support

CROWDFUNDING, LONGTERM

Left: San Francisco’s Peak Design has raised more than $13 million dollars via crowdfunding to develop its range of technical camera bags and accessories. Right: Vancouver’s Skye Footwear has already exceeded its crowdfunding target for its first campaign. Contributed photos campaigns with PR efforts – Griffiths attributes some of the success of her Evolution Bra campaign to a social media post by George Takei. Not hitting your goal means you’re on record as having missed your mark. And afterwards, there’s the question of delivering the goods – and delivering them in time – or you risk losing all the goodwill you’ve built during the campaign.

BEYOND FASHION

Saraceno balks at the description of Peak Design as a fashion brand. His company makes equipment to help people transport stuff – bags, clips, straps and so on. Its main customer base is creatives, and the first product, launched in 2011, was a clip

that allows a DSLR camera to be secured to the body. “There’s a fashion nature to all our products – we make things that people wear and people care about how they look. But the main thing is really utility: functional, beautiful gear that solves problems,” Saraceno says. Skye Footwear’s shoes are innovative, too – inspired by Gary Chang’s experience of standing all day at trade shows, they’re comfy enough for long wear, but good-looking, as well, and all the materials used are biodegradable or recyclable. And Knix Wear products aren’t pure fashion either – the company makes knickers with built-in pantyliners and ultra-comfortable, reversible,

anti-odour bras. “A fashion brand launching a beautiful new collection might not get the coverage they need to drive a campaign. You need something feature driven, maybe technical, with a story behind it that will pull in an audience,” says Griffiths. Saraceno adds that crowdfunded businesses typically do well with younger early adopters. “We launched in 2011 with a product that was an accessory for a DSLR camera. People with fancy cameras are tech-savvy and gear-orientated. Almost all of them are going to invest in accessories. At that time, Kickstarter was fairly new and there was a disproportionate number of tech-savvy people on the site,” he explains.

It’s early days for Chang and Skye Footwear, but his first Kickstarter has been a hit (the company exceeded its target of $30,000 by $13,000) and he’ll be launching another campaign on Indiegogo soon. The first batch of products will be delivered in March 2017. In spite of her success (the Kickstarter campaign for the Evolution Bra raised over $1.5 million, surpassing the initial goal by more than 5,000 per cent), Griffiths has decided to step away from the method because it’s so time-consuming. “Going forward, we’ll take the principles of crowdfunding, involving customers in the product development to get them enthused. We’ll always ask if there’s a product story or an innovation story that will resonate with customers and media,” she says. Crowdfunding remains an integral part of Peak Design, and Saraceno believes it will be continue to be successful for other companies, too. But he has a warning for would-be entrepreneurs. “A lot of people see brands like us making lots of money on Kickstarter and think, ‘OK, I’m going to make a lot of money on Kickstarter.’ But what it boils down to is the same things that make any business successful: hard work, luck, and having a great product.” W

DINING OUT

‘Cool-weather’ cocktails We launch our new weekly cocktail column with the hottest drinks of the season Joanne Sasvari The Alchemist

@TheAlchemistBC What’s the best way to get into the festive spirit? Why, with some festive spirits, of course. All over Vancouver, the city’s best bartenders are shaking, stirring and mulling the best seasonal flavours into cocktails designed to warm body and soul. And truly, can you think of a better way to bring this cold, dreary year to a close? Summer may have us craving light and refreshing thirst quenchers, but on wintry days, when the skies fill with sleet and slush piles up at the curb, we yearn for comfort, richness and deep flavours. Think luscious eggnogs, steamy mulled ciders, brown spirits and, above all, plenty of spice. “I like spice. I like that sensation of warmth, whether it’s a hot cocktail or not,” says Sabrine Dhaliwal, bar manager at Uva Wine & Cocktail Bar. She’s featuring five seasonal drinks on her “cool weather cocktails” list, including a toasty toddy, a creamy concoction that’s like a slice of apple pie crossed with eggnog, and a spiced berry drink she’s called What’s Haskap’in? (See recipe below.) The punny name refers to Okanagan Spirits’ new haskap liqueur. The haskap, also known as the honeyberry, is an antioxidant-rich, cool-climate powerhouse with a flavour that hits the sweet spot between blueberries, raspberries and saskatoons. “It’s super delicious, it’s super tart and it’s really cool,” Dhaliwal says.

Clockwise from top: L’Abattoir head bartender Katie Ingram; Uva Wine & Cocktail bar manager Sabrine Dhaliwal; L’Abattoir’s cranberry Donner & Blitzen holiday cocktail; Royal Dinette’s toasted marshmallow Kumbaya; Uva’s spiced honeyberry What’s Haskap’in. Dan Toulgoet photos Meanwhile, over at L’Abattoir, head bartender Katie Ingram is taking inspiration from her historical Gastown neighbourhood for some seasonal gallows humour. She recently won the Knob Creek Whiskey Cup competition in Toronto with her Gaoler’s Mews cocktail, referencing her restaurant’s origins as the city’s first jail; her Slaughternog on the other hand, is a nod to its location around the corner from the city’s first slaughterhouse. “We make a custard and add booze and shake it up and make it delicious,” she

says. Her version of eggnog is lighter and fruitier than most, with a healthy slug of citrus juice and an appealing splash of Sons of Vancouver’s locally made amaretto. And for those who dream of escaping to someplace tropical, Ingram has created the Donner & Blitzen, with its flavours of cranberry, clove, cherry, pineapple and mezcal. “It’s smoky and sweet and spicy,” she says. Of course, for many of us the holidays are all about tradition, and that includes Kaitlyn Stewart, bar manager at Royal Dinette. Her winter

cocktail list includes the rosemary-scented Just Like Heaven (think coastal forests) and the Kumabaya, “my nod to the Pacific Northwest with hickory-smoked rye and a toasted marshmallow on top.” But her special holiday feature, The Little Lebowski, is a homage to the movie she and her family would gather to watch each year. “It’s a spinoff of The Dude’s favourite cocktail, the White Russian,” Stewart says. Instead of the traditional vodka, coffee liqueur and cream, she mixes together housemade eggnog, vodka,

Tia Maria, Galliano, espresso and chocolate bitters. “It’s what the season reminds me of,” she says. “When I’m putting together cocktails, it’s what my family traditions are. It’s the flavours, aromas and fun traditions like watching The Big Lebowski with my family.” Still thirsty? There’s also Max Borrowman’s mouthwatering mulled wine at Juniper Kitchen + Bar, Lauren Mote’s spirit-forward Northwinds at theYew Seafood + Bar at the Four Seasons, Justin Taylor’s hot buttered rum at the Cascade Room, and the hot

apple cider that fills the tent at the Reflections Winter Terrace with the fragrance of cinnamon and apple pie. Whatever your own holiday traditions, why not make Vancouver’s terrific coldweather nogs, toddies, flips and punches part of them? They’ll keep your spirits warm no matter what winter throws at you. RECIPES // WHAT’S HASKAP’IN? This tart, juicy and refreshing take on wintry flavours is created by Sabrine Dhaliwal, bar manager of Uva Wine & Cocktail Bar. • 1 ½ oz (45 mL) Taylor Fladgate White Port • 1 oz (30 mL) Beefeater gin • ¼ oz (7 mL) Okanagan Spirits Haskap Liqueur • ¾ oz (22 mL) freshly squeezed lemon juice • 2 dashes Bittered Sling Autumnbog Cranberry Bitters • Tonic water Place all ingredients except tonic water in a cocktail shaker with ice. THE LITTLE LEBOWSKI Kaitlyn Stewart, bar manager of Royal Dinette, takes inspiration for this creamy, coffee-

laced libation from The Dude’s favourite cocktail, the White Russian. So drink up and let’s go bowling! • 2 oz (60 mL) house-made or purchased eggnog (see next recipe) • 1 oz (30 mL) vodka, such as Absolut • ½ oz (15 mL) Tia Maria coffee liqueur • ¼ oz. (7 mL) Galliano herbal liqueur • 1 oz (30 mL) espresso • 9 drops chocolate bitters, such as Mrs. Better’s Bitters Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake vigorously for 10 to

15 seconds. Fine strain into a mini milk bottle, chilled coupe or rocks (Old Fashioned) glass.Garnish with a pinch of cocoa nibs and serve with a side of chocolate chip cookies. Serves 1.

CLASSIC EGGNOG Sure, you can buy a carton of eggnog, but homemade is always better. Note that this recipe includes raw eggs; if that’s a concern for you, use pasteurized eggs, available in some grocery stores. • 3 cups (750 mL) whole milk • 1 cup (250 mL) heavy cream • 3 cinnamon sticks • 1 vanilla bean pod

• 1 teaspoon grated nutmeg • 5 egg yolks • 2/3 cup (160 mL) granulated sugar In a saucepan, combine milk, cream, cinnamon, vanilla bean and nutmeg. Bring just to a boil over medium heat, stirring continuously. Remove from heat and steep for 20 to 30 minutes, then strain out solids. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, beat egg yolks and sugar until combined. Slowly whisk in the steeped milk until combined and smooth. Bottle and refrigerate; consume within two days. Makes about 1 quart (1 L). W

DINING OUT

Spirited gifts: What BC bartenders want to see under the tree STACEY ACKERMAN

We asked some top BC bartenders which bottle of local spirits they would put on their Christmas list.

KATIE INGRAM

Head bartender, L’Abattoir Restaurant I’d pick Okanagan Spirits Laird of Fintry Single Malt Whisky. It is a Scotch-style single malt made with 100 per cent BC malted barley using French and American oak, and finished in Okanagan wine barrels. The nose is unbelievable, with plum, vanilla, raisins, berries, poached pears, nuts, and classic oak characteristics that continue on the palate. It has a dry finish, with a hint of sweet vanilla and baking spices. I would make a twist on a Rob Roy – a Rodney’s Roy – with 2 oz. Laird of Fintry, 0.3 oz. Noilly Prat Rouge, 0.3 oz. Noilly Prat Ambre and two dashes Bittered Sling Cascade Celery Bitters.

PETER VAN DE REEP

Bar manager, Upstairs at Campagnolo Odd Society Bittersweet Vermouth, please. This is a wonderful example of the new style of vermouth being produced in North America: bitter, herbaceous and very complex, with a dominant tree-bark and citrus-peel character. It’s very versatile in cocktails and delicious on its own. I’d whip up a Mile Zero, a dark and brooding cocktail, perfect for a cold, rainy Vancouver night: 1 oz. Bulleit Rye, 1 oz. Odd Society Bit-

Okanagan Spirits Laird of Fintry Single Malt Whisky. Contributed photo tersweet Vermouth, 0.75 oz. Luxardo Amaro Abano. Stir all ingredients with ice, strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

J-S DUPUIS

Bar manager, Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar Queensborough Small Batch Dry Gin from Central City Brewers & Distillers. I love its crispness, balanced juniper, light citrus notes and spruce-tip flavour. It’s a great Pacific Northwest gin. If it’s in my stocking, I will definitely be making a GibsonWet Martini – one of my all-time favourite cocktails. I like a wet martini only if the gin is strong and flavourful enough to stand up to the vermouth, and Queensborough fits the bill. Come Christmas, I will share a few of these with my wife, while wearing my favourite sweater, and with my big dogs by my side.

Bar manager, West Restaurant Sons of Vancouver No. 82 Amaretto. I’ve got a bit of a sweet tooth and it’s by far the best amaretto I’ve ever tried. Excellently balanced with the flavours of vanilla bean, orange peel and blackberry honey. I’m almost finished my test bottle, so it would be great to find another in my Christmas stocking. I’ve found it pairs incredibly well with a smoky scotch, so I created The Godfather of Vancouver, a take on the classic Godfather cocktail, using Sons of Vancouver Amaretto, 10-year-old Ardbeg, 10-year-old Glenmorangie, and a lemon twist to finish. It’s my new favourite thing!

PETER SULLIVAN

Bar manager, Forage I’ll take The Woods Spirit Co. Amaro, because they love local like we love local here at Forage, and it’s a spirit that is super user-friendly in cocktails. I’d make a Forage Negroni: 1.5 oz. Sheringham Seaside Gin, 1 oz.The Woods Spirit Co. Amaro, and 0.5 oz. Odd Society Bittersweet Vermouth. You can’t get more local that that!

direction BC distilling is going, utilizing local ingredients and being creative with Old World recipes. I’d go with a Christmas Morning BC Martinez, with equal parts Legend Distilling’s Black Moon smoked rosemary gin and Moderna Vermouth, a splash of Okanagan Spirits Maraschino Liqueur, and a dash or two of Bittered Sling Moondog Bitters.

MAX BORROWMAN

Head bartender, Juniper Restaurant & Bar I would like a bottle of Sheringham Seaside Gin, because I love the delicious briny notes that come from the winged sea kelp, one of its key botanicals. I used to go surfing near where the distillery is located on Vancouver Island, so those coastal flavours evoke fond memories for me. My first drink would be the Islander G&T we serve at Juniper: 1.5 oz. Sheringham Seaside Gin, a dash of Bittered Sling Cascade Celery Bitters and Fever Tree Indian Tonic Water. –Story courtesy of The Alchemist magazine

CRAFT BEER

Brews in the ’burbs Get outside the bubble and discover these great Metro Vancouver breweries Robert Mangelsdorf The Growler

@TheGrowlerBC

A mere two decades after it was first proposed, the (very) long-awaited Evergreen Line SkyTrain extension opened earlier this month, connecting the far-flung outposts of Coquitlam and Port Moody to the Metro Vancouver rapid-transit grid. What does this have to do with beer? Well, now it’s easier than ever to visit some of BC’s most impressive breweries. Since driving is a really terrible way to go brewery hopping, there’s no better excuse to load up your Compass card and venture into the vast unknown that is suburban Vancouver. For those diehard, downtown-dwelling Vancouverites who might be unaware, the suburbs are that desolate re-

gion that exists beyond Boundary Road. Some of your closest friends and family may have made the trek there (likely not long after having children), never to be seen again. So, what life exists in this seeming black hole? Is this hinterland a hellscape where the living envy the dead? It’s hard to say, but the beer is fantastic! Seriously, though, do yourself a favour, hop a train and get out of the downtown bubble.

THE NEXT STATION IS… MOODY CENTRE

I mean, it’s just all too perfect. The second stop on the new Evergreen Line drops you off right in the middle of the most densely populated brewing district in the province. With Twin Sails, Yellow Dog, Parkside, and Moody Ales all within a block and a half of each other on Murray Street, the area known as Brewers Row is a destination in its own right. The four breweries couldn’t be more different, and whether you’re partial to the funky farmhouse ales at Yellow Dog, or Twin Sail’s Con Leche Horchata Milk

8 W December 15 - December 21, 2016

IBU) while you’re there, before they’re all gone. The second in Central City’s Sour Series, this Belgianstyle kriek is infused with cherries and aged for two years in oak wine barrels.

Stout (7.5% ABV, 18 IBU), there’s something on this block to pique the interest of even the most jaded craft beer snob. Also, when the sun is out, the adjacent Rocky Point Park is seriously beautiful.Walk off those pints with a jaunt around the waterfront trail.

THE NEXT STATION IS… NEW WESTMINSTER

THE NEXT STATION IS… PRODUCTION WAYUNIVERSITY

(You’re totally reading these in the SkyTrain Lady’s voice, aren’t you?) Around the back of an unassuming industrial park at the bottom of Burnaby Mountain lies one of BC’s best breweries. Despite its humble location, Dageraad has been creating arguably some of the best Belgianinspired beers this side of the Low Countries. The recently released Brune (7.5% ABV) is an abbey-style dubbel brewed with mission figs, and is worth the trip alone. Dageraad’s current tasting room is, shall we say, modest. However, the brewery has a new mezzanine tasting lounge in the works that I’ve been assured will be open any month now.

Get out of the downtown bubble and discover the breweries of the ‘burbs on the new Evergreen Line. Tri-City News photo

THE NEXT STATION IS… SCOTT ROAD

Ah yes, scenic Whalley – easily Metro Vancouver’s most maligned neighbourhood. Until Central City set up shop on Bridgeview Drive, there was really no reason to come here (unless your 1992 Dodge Neon needed a new radiator). But just a short walk past the junkyards, car lots, and more junkyards, stands Central City’s glorious flagship brewery and distillery, like a shimmering diamond in the rough. The facility is so impressive, it’s even helping to

spark a bit of a renaissance in the neighbourhood, with new development sprouting for the first time in decades. Central City is really a must-visit destination for any craft beer fan. The dozens of towering stainless-steel tanks give the building a cathedral-like feel, and truly, the 65,000-sq.-ft. building is a monument to the fermentable arts. Central City also offers one of the best brewery tours in town, running Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Be sure to pick up a bottle of the Sour No. 2 Kriek (10.8% ABV, 17

Since opening in 2014, New Westminster’s Steel & Oak has been producing a consistently notable roster of European-inspired beers. The small tasting room is tucked in next to an overpass, and is a popular hangout with proud New Westminsterites (New Westminsterians?) who love their local brewery. One of Steel & Oak’s latest creations, Kaffee (5.1% ABV, 17 IBU), is a blonde ale that tastes almost nothing like it looks. The beer is infused with whole coffee beans, giving it a rich, roasty flavour despite its light golden hue. The walk from the station to the brewery can be a bit treacherous if you decide to follow Columbia Street (the main trucking route through town), so take the scenic route instead, along New Westminster’s waterfront promenade next to the Fraser River. It’s a couple of minutes longer, but totally worth it. W

WINE

Festive sips: New wines for Christmas Day traditions Michaela Morris By the Bottle

@MichaelaWine

Christmas is all about tradition. Most of us stick rigorously to our family rituals around what we do and how we do them, right down to what we eat. I’ve mildly threatened my brother that I won’t show up on the 25th if he doesn’t make his always excellent ham. And, of course, I’m also counting on candied yams, scalloped potatoes and Brussels sprouts. (I sure hope my family is reading this.) The all-important wine selection falls on my shoulders and I take the responsibility very seriously. This is where I like to change things up, at least a bit. While I typically lean toward vibrant, characterful whites and light to medium fruity reds, I take great pleasure in introducing everyone to my favourite new finds within those realms. It’s way more exciting than watching them open their gifts. I’ve combed the shelves for the latest releases to pair with that familiar and beloved feast. I have sweet ‘n’ salty ham in mind. But don’t worry, my picks will work equally well with turkey dinner. Here’s to keeping traditions fresh! 2015 L’Ora, Pinot Grigio, Alto Adige DOC, Italy, $16.99, BC Liquor Stores Sure to be a crowd pleaser, L’Ora stands out in a sea of Pinot Grigio, both in terms of packaging and price. Promising green almond and banana on the nose, it is unctuously textured, slightly honeyed, with lovely peach flavours, yet clean and minerally on the finish.

2015 Donnafugata, ‘Anthìlia’ Sicilia Bianco DOC, Italy, $27-30, private wine stores (Liberty, Legacy & Everything Wine) Though not new to BC, if it is to you, the Anthìlia is worth seeking out. A blend of the local Sicilian grapes Ansonica and Catarratto Bianco, it offers jasmine and herb flowers, orange and lime peel, as well as juicy flavours of pear. A vivacious match for the array of side dishes that will be served up Christmas Day. 2014 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf, Wachenheimer, Riesling Trocken, $31.49, BC Liquor Stores A concentrated mouthful of white peach, white grapefruit and stones. I just love this dry, tightly wound expression of Riesling. Pure and racy, it will relax a little bit with food and refresh between bites. Regularly $33.99, the $2.50 off is a Christmas gift for the month of December. Accept it graciously.

2014 Domaine Pascal Aufranc, ‘Vignes de 1939’ Chénas AOC France, $26.99, BC Liquor Stores Though my wine selection changes from year to year, I inevitably include something from Beaujolais. I’m very excited about sipping this cru Chénas with baked ham on the 25th. Succulent raspberry, cherry and red currant with violets and a snap of fresh-cracked pepper, it’s approachable, charming, crunchy and very easy to drink. 2014 Greywacke, Pinot Noir, Marlborough, New Zealand, $44.99, BC Liquor Stores Penetrating and gorgeously scented with plum blossoms, lavender and wild cherry wafting from the glass. Our Man: Vancouver musicians pay tribute to Leonard Cohen GREGORY ADAMS @gregoryadamsbc

It’s been a rough year for a multitude of reasons, but the music world has been hit especially hard via a painful series of deaths.Throughout 2016, we lost icons and gamechangers including David Bowie, Prince, Sharon Jones, A Tribe Called Quest’s Phife Dawg, and many more. While felt around the globe, the early November passing of poet, author and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen has left a mark locally. Accordingly, this week will see two different tribute concert taking place across town. Both the “Tower of Song” concert at the Fox Cabaret on Thursday (Dec. 15) and the “I’mYour Man” celebration at the Rio Theatre on Saturday (Dec. 17) unite a wide spectrum of Vancouver artists ready to toast the prolific, impactful, and passionate songbook of Our Man. “He’s obviously super influential to a ton of people I know, including myself,” Fox Cabaret live-music director Adam Fink says of booking his venue’s event, adding that while he won’t be onstage himself, his first band was named the Beautiful Losers, after Cohen’s 1966 novel. “We thought it would be nice to do something honouring him, and hopefully making a little bit of money for charity at the same time.” Banding together at the Fox to raise funds for the Canadian Red Cross will be local artists like dark-pop performer Louise Burns and glam experimenter Johnny De Courcy. While Belle Game keyboardist and vocalist Katrina Jones has lived in Vancouver for the last five years, her involvement in both tribute nights reflects being raised in Cohen’s off-andon home base of Montreal, where it wasn’t unheard of

to run into the songwriter. “He’s always been this mythical creature, [but] there’s a general knowing, appreciating and understanding of him in Montreal,” she says. “When I was doing my undergrad at McGill, I worked at a café called Bagel Etc for four years, and it was directly across the street from his apartment. I actually had the pleasure of serving him, meeting him and hanging out with him.” Jones reveals of his ordering habits: “It was always just coffee. If he ate anything, it would be very simple, like eggs, bacon and bread. That was it. He would just come in some mornings, sit at the bar with his coffee and just want to hang out.” Endearingly, says Jones, Cohen would address everyone he came into contact with as “friend.” While not every musician on the bill had the chance to meet Cohen, his influence on their lives is no less personal. Malcolm Biddle, who performs solo as Malcolm Jack, had his love for the baritonevoiced icon passed on through his dad’s old record collection. “I still have my dad’s Songs of Leonard Cohen,” he says, referencing Cohen’s 1967 debut. “I think a lot of people did this at the time, but it’s got his initials on the front cover, MB, which is the same as mine.” While Biddle’s attachment to the album will have him bringing an interpretation of “The Stranger Song” onto the Fox’s stage, he’ll also cover “There is a War” from 1974’s New Skin for the Old Ceremony, a piece his full band project, Dada Plan, had already been including in their live repertoire. “He was a focused and furious artist, which is an oldworld trait,” Biddle praises. “In a world of hyper-fast

Leonard Cohen in his younger years. The legendary Canadian singer-songwriter passed away on Nov. 7. Roland Godefroy/Wikipedia photo media consumption, he could be compared with those old artists in the sense that he built a body of work, and every piece is specifically unique and perfected.” Over the last 50 years, Cohen’s music evolved from the acoustic, finger-picked beauty of Songs of Love and Hate, to the synth-based smooth jazz of The Future, and onto the occasionally symphonic You Want it Darker, a mortalityfocused collection that landed mere weeks before Cohen’s death. No Sinner frontwoman Colleen Rennison, who will be singing at both the Fox and the Rio, admits that songs like “Suzanne” and “Hallelujah” have lived with her for years, but it’s not Cohen’s versions she’s generally been drawn to. A self-described “second-hand fan,” she loves the “potency” of Cohen’s poetry, but has been far more affected by other artists’ musi-

cal interpretations. “I think that it really speaks volumes of the power of words that I can hear one of his songs and be like, ‘This is never something that I would choose to put on’ – not that that’s true for everything he’s done,” says Rennison. “Chances are the best writer isn’t going to be the best singer; chances are the best singer isn’t going to be the best writer. If you take the best singer, like k.d. lang, and pair her with a song like ‘Hallelujah,’ it’s magic.” Rennison’s own booming, blues-stained pipes are quite different than the minimalist, gravel-voiced vocals Cohen displayed on record. She’ll put a twist on the 1974 song “Why Don’tYou Try?”, which she calls a feminist anthem. “[It’s] basically a pep talk to a woman that’s just come out of a relationship. I love that: ‘You need to hold a leash to be a lady.’You need to have some-

body on a string in order to feel like a woman. I just love that line so much, because I see so many men on leashes, you know?” But she’ll be rendering the song in her own way – which she believes is the only way to approach any of Cohen’s material. “Nobody can mimic Leonard Cohen. He’s just the suavest Canadian dude ever. You have to put your own brand on it. I think that’s neat about covering Cohen: that it’s really up to interpretation. W The Tower of Song tribute concert takes place Thursday, Dec. 15, at Fox Cabaret (2321 Main), 8pm; tickets $12 from FoxCabaret.com. I’m Your Man is on Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Rio Theatre (1660 E. Broadway), 8pm; tickets $17 from RioTheatre.ca

“I don’t think we ever could have foreseen that we would carry it on for this long,” says Bob Sumner, chuckling. The co-founder and co-namesake (alongside sibling Brian) of Vancouver roots-rock band the Sumner Brothers is talking about A Sumner Brothers Christmas XI, the upcoming 11th edition of one of the city’s most enduring – yet least known – holiday celebrations. Beginning in 2005 at the ANZA Club, the combination multiband concert and unhinged seasonal brouhaha has since relocated to the WISE Hall, the Biltmore, and the Rickshaw. This year, it takes place for the first time at Main Street’s Ellis Building alongside the popular Eastside Flea, the fortnightly artisan/vintage market that helped revitalize the previously moribund, century-old storefront. The Eastside Flea unwittingly revitalized A Sumner Brothers Christmas, as well. If not for an uncannily well-timed intervention, the event likely wouldn’t have returned this year. “About three or four months ago, my brother sent me a text, out of the blue, and said, ‘Think about it. Don’t make any rash decisions, but maybe we should quit the annual shows and just focus on art: music videos and songs,’” Sumner recalls. “I agreed, and then literally the same day, one of my good friends, who helps run the Eastside Flea, sent me a text that said, ‘Let’s do the Christmas show here [at the Ellis].’ I thought that was an awesome idea.”

Hello Paul McGillion

‘Stargate: Atlantis’ actor dishes on challenging ‘Hello Destroyer’ role Sabrina Furminger Reel People @Sabrinarmf

When Paul McGillion’s mother gazed down upon her newborn child – her sixth of an eventual seven, all born in the family home in Paisley, Scotland – and considered his full head of hair, she was struck by inspiration. “She looked at me and said, ‘Oh, my god, look at his hair! He looks like he’ll be a Beatle; let’s call him Paul,’” says the veteran actor, adopting a Scottish accent when quoting his mother. “She still tells me, ‘You’ve been a performer since the day you were born.’” Fans of the über-popular Stargate SG-1 spin-off Stargate: Atlantis will recognize that Scottish accent as the one McGillion wielded for five seasons as Dr. Carson Beckett – a role that wasn’t originally designed to be Scottish, but became so

when McGillion brought the accent into the audition room and convinced the casting director otherwise. But McGillion doesn’t use that accent in most of his projects. He doesn’t use it when he meets with Reel People to discuss his career journey (except when quoting his parents). His default accent could be categorized as “Canadian” – perhaps because he spent the bulk of his childhood in Niagara-onthe-Lake, attended university in St. Catherines and St. John’s, and honed his acting chops in Toronto before heading west to crack the BC screen scene. Today, McGillion is a busy actor who enjoys variety. His lengthy filmography includes a staggering range of genres, character archetypes, and big budget and independent screen projects (including The X-Files, Sanctuary, Tomorrowland, Once Upon a Time, and Supernatural). McGillion enjoyed a lot of variety in 2016. He logged roles in Heartbeats (a musical comedy about an American hip hop dancer who finds love and Bollywood moves during a family trip to India), Big Fat Liar 2, appeared in On the Farm (an award-winning feature about

the Robert Pickton case) and Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce. McGillion also graced festival screens on both coasts in Hello Destroyer. The feature film directorial debut from Vancouver director Kevan Funk – which premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) – centers on a junior hockey player (portrayed by Jared Abrahamson) whose life is shattered by an in-game act of violence. The film also stars Vancouver stalwarts Ben Cotton, Ian Tracey, and Sara Canning, and won its director the BC Emerging Filmmaker Award at the 2016 Vancouver International Film Festival. McGillion plays the father of the disgraced hockey player. “I could relate to this film,” says McGillion, who was a wrestler throughout high school and college, and majored in physical education at Brock University. “It’s a dark subject matter that really hasn’t been broached on this level in Canada. It really brings to life institutional violence in sports, especially in Canada, and how there’s pressure put upon young men to perform.” Vancouver audiences will get another chance to see Hello Destroyer when the film

Paul McGillion stars in the new film ‘Hello Destroyer.’ Contributed photo returns to the 604 in January as part of TIFF’s touring 16th annual Canada’s Top 10 Film Festival. Although McGillion plays a father in Hello Destroyer, the character is vastly different from that of his own father, on whom he admittedly based part of his Stargate: Atlantis character. “The [Stargate: Atlantis] writers weren’t Scottish, so I could use a lot of my background and my family’s background,” recalls McGillion. “The Scots always wear their hearts on their sleeves,

and [Beckett] was sort of like the Cowardly Lion in a lot of ways. He had a lot of comedy, as well as a lot of drama.” In 2008, McGillion read for the part of another famous Scottish character from the sci-fi sphere: that of Montgomery “Scotty” Scott in the reboot of the Star Trek movie franchise. The family of James Doohan (who portrayed Scotty in the original TV series and films) publicly endorsed McGillion for the role that ultimately went to Simon Pegg. McGillion did appear in a small role in the

final film. “It’s because of the Stargate fanbase that I even had a crack at that,” says McGillion, who travels to fan conventions around the world each year and calls Stargate “the gift that keeps on giving.” W • Hello Destroyer screens Jan. 13-22 at The Cinematheque as part of TIFF’s 16th annual Canada’s Top 10 Film Festival. Jessica Chastain stars as a Washington lobbyist in ‘Miss Sloane’. Kerry Hayes photo

MISS SLOANE

Starring Jessica Chastain, Mark Strong Directed by John Madden A headstrong, soughtafter Washington lobbyist takes on the toughest opponent of her career – the gun lobby – in John Madden’s sometimes pedantic but ultimately watchable drama, Miss Sloane. In a plot that could have been ripped right from the headlines – given America’s political divisiveness and controversial firearm laws – powerbroker Elizabeth Sloane (Chastain) is asked to help oppose a bill that imposes regulations on

Westender.com

firearms. Faced with a moral conundrum, she instead joins a small firm (led by Mark Strong) that represents the backers of the law. Her sudden defiance unleashes some powerful new enemies who threaten her livelihood, including a former boss (Sam Waterston) and a shady Congressman (John Lithgow). Chastain brings a percolating ferocity to her role, elevating the often industry-jargon-laden script. Beneath the polished veneer of her character lies a cracked interior reliant upon frequent use of prescription drugs and occasional intimate encounters with a male escort (Jake Lacy).

Miss Sloane boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Stuhlbarg and Alison Pill, each of whom get their fair share of fiery arguments and clip-worthy one-liners that look great in the trailers.Yet there’s something hollow about the movie that makes it feel like an extended episode of a TV legal drama. Despite some missteps in the dialogue department and the inevitable Hollywood gloss, Miss Sloane features one hell of a lead performance, and is a fascinating glimpse at the clandestine world of political lobbying. How to be a veggie-friendly host at your holiday party Patty Javier Gomez Whole Nourishment

@WholeNourishBC With all the food-oriented social gatherings going on during the holiday season, it can be a pain having dietary restrictions that don’t jibe with the majority. If you’re vegetarian or vegan, you know what I mean. What with myself being gluten free (to be clear: it’s a legitimate intolerance, not a preference), I often find myself eating ahead of a dinner party just to ensure I’ll be sated. While I know it can be an inconvenience to prepare something just for that one guest with special requirements, it’s really not difficult to whip up a suitable dish that everyone in attendance can enjoy. (And no, the crudité platter doesn’t count.)

ment other than gross bottled ranch dressing. Go for hummus: all you need is chickpeas, olive oil, tahini, lemon juice, and a blender or food processor. Spice it up or customize it according to your tastes – maybe adding roasted beets to the mix. Let the kitchen be your playground.

If gluten isn’t an issue with your veggie invitees, then stuffing something into phyllo pastry is a great way to look like you just channeled Martha Stewart in the kitchen. All you’ve got to do is buy some premade pastry sheets and fill them with spiced squash and goat or nut cheese, perhaps accompanied by a dipping sauce.

Words of wisdom from the ‘Relationship Fairy Godmother’ Sex with Mish Way

@MyszkaWay Vancouver-based relationship coach Tara Caffelle is known as the Relationship Fairy Godmother. She’s not going to be able to fix your romance problems with the wave of her wand, but she’ll help you and your significant other pick up your own wands and swirl away the bullshit yourselves. (With positivity and cognitive strategy, of course.) Caffelle gets in there before the problems start, adding guidance and wisdom while helping you and your partner become stronger and more connected. So, I asked Caffelle about her practice

and why relationship coaching can be as necessary as your daily workout. Why did you become a relationship counsellor? What led me to working specifically with people in relationships is that I was always drawn to, and fascinated by, how couples interact, and how strong relationships – like the ones I grew up around – can really be a springboard for the success of the whole family. It was a natural progression from the work I was doing with individual clients. What exactly does a Relationship Fairy Godmother do? For the duration of my work with my clients…, I’m really like a secret weapon-

slash-teammate in the relationship. I work with the couple and the individuals in the relationship to not just be “okay,” but to be incredible together. Our sessions become a soft place for them to land and grow together. Clients I worked with a few years ago started to call me their Fairy Godmother, and the name stuck. Why do you think people only go and see a relationship counsellor when it’s dire or they’re “in trouble”? How do we remove the stigma of thirdparty help? I think a lot of couples may choose to visit a therapist when their relationship is perhaps in dire condition for a number of reasons. It can actually make breaking up safer and easier to do, and it may be a last resort because it’s seen as shameful or there’s been failure to fix it on their own. My clients aren’t typically in this position, and choose to work with a skilled and powerful coach for the same reason that a team like the Canucks would: to take something that’s functioning pretty well and reach an even better – Stanley Cup – level. What are the rules for solid communication? Make and share your observations about what you see and hear: “It feels really tense between us right now. Can we talk about what’s happening?” Take responsibility to ask for what you need from your partner. Don’t be afraid to have it be a little messy – you can always recover if you’re respectful. And finally, separate behaviours from character traits; for example, your partner may act in a selfish way, but they’re not necessarily selfish. Big difference. What are your tips for communicating while in an argument with your partner? I would say that we seem to spend a lot of time in arguments formulating what we’re going to say next, and if, instead, we sought to understand our partner, we may have a different experience. In addition, I always tell clients that it’s important to take breaks if one of you is feeling overwhelmed and unable to continue. This is a physiological response we call “flooding.”You can continue the discussion at any time, and it’s never a bad idea to cool off and gain some perspective. Free Will Astrology By Rob Brezsny “Living is a form of not being sure, not knowing what next or how,” said dancer Agnes De Mille. “We guess. We may be wrong, but we take leap after leap in the dark.” As true as her words might be for most of us much of the time, I suspect they don’t apply to you right now. This is one of those rare moments when feeling total certainty is justified. Your vision is extra clear and farseeing. Your good humour and expansive spirit will ensure that you stay humble. As you take leap after leap, you’ll be surrounded by light.

“Since you are like no other being ever created since the beginning of time, you are incomparable,” wrote journalist Brenda Ueland. Pause for a moment and fully take in that fact, Libra. What a huge responsibility it is to be absolutely unique. In fact, it’s so monumental that you may still be shy about living up to it. But how about if you make 2017 the year you finally come into your own as the awesomely unprecedented creature that you are? I dare you to more fully acknowledge and express your singular destiny. Start today!

“We are torn between nostalgia for the familiar and an urge for the foreign and strange,” wrote author Carson McCullers. Are you ready to give that adage a twist, Taurus? In the coming weeks, I think you should search for foreign and strange qualities in your familiar world. Such a quest may initially feel odd, but will ultimately be healthy and interesting. It will also be good preparation for the next chapter of your life, when you will saunter out into unknown territory and find ways to feel at home there.

“To dream… to dream has been the business of my life,” wrote author Edgar Allan Poe. I don’t expect you to match his devotion to dreams in 2017, Scorpio, but I do hope you will become more deeply engaged with your waking fantasies and the stories that unfold as you lie sleeping. Why? Because your usual approaches to gathering useful information won’t be sufficient. To be successful, both in the spiritual and worldly senses, you’ll need extra access to perspectives that come from beyond your rational mind. Here’s a good motto for you in 2017: “I am a lavish and practical dreamer.”

“If you don’t use your own imagination, somebody else is going to use it for you,” said writer Ronald Sukenick. That’s always true, but it will be especially important for you to keep in mind in 2017. You Geminis will have an unparalleled power to enlarge, refine, and tap into your imagination. You’ll be blessed with the motivation and ingenuity to make it work for you in new ways, which could enable you to accomplish marvellous feats of creativity and self-transformation. Now here’s a warning: If you DON’T use your willpower to take advantage of these potentials, your imagination will be subject to atrophy and colonization.

Physicist Stephen Hawking is skeptical of the hypothesis that humans may someday be able to travel through time. To jokingly dramatize his belief, he threw a party for time travellers from the future. Sadly, not a single chrononaut showed up to enjoy the champagne and hors d’oeuvres Hawking had prepared. Despite this discouraging evidence, I guarantee that you will have the potential to meet with Future Versions of You on a regular basis during the next nine months. These encounters are likely to be metaphorical or dreamlike rather than literal, but they will provide valuable information as you make decisions that affect your destiny for years to come.

Why are Australian sand wasps so skilled at finding their way back home after being out all day? Here’s their trick: When they first leave the nest each morning, they fly backwards, imprinting on their memory banks the sights they will look for when they return later. Furthermore, their exiting flight path is a slow and systematic zigzag pattern that orients them from multiple directions. I recommend that you draw inspiration from the sand wasps in 2017, Cancerian. One of your important tasks will be to keep finding your way back to your spiritual home, over and over again.

During these last few weeks, you may have sometimes felt like smashing holes in the wall with your head, or dragging precious keepsakes into the middle of the street and setting them on fire, or delivering boxes full of garbage to people who don’t appreciate you as much as they should. I hope you abstained from doing things like that. Now here are some prescriptions to help you graduate from unproductive impulses: Make or find a symbol of one of your mental blocks, and bash it to pieces with a hammer, and perform rituals to reinvigorate your love for them.

Vault 21, a restaurant in Dunedin, New Zealand, serves sautéed locusts. For $5, patrons receive a plate of five. The menu refers to the dish not as “Oily Sizzling Grasshoppers,” but rather as “Sky Prawns.” Satisfied customers know exactly what they’re eating, and some say the taste does indeed resemble prawns. I bring this to your attention, Leo, because it illustrates a talent you will have in abundance during 2017: re-branding. You’ll know how to maximize the attractiveness and desirability of things by presenting them in the best possible light.

Singer-songwriter Tom Waits has a distinctive voice. One fan described it this way: “Like how you’d sound if you drank a quart of bourbon, smoked a pack of cigarettes and swallowed a pack of razor blades.” Luckily, Waits doesn’t have to actually do any of those self-destructive things to achieve his unique tone. In fact, he’s wealthy from selling his music, and has three kids with a woman to whom he’s been married for 36 years. I foresee a similar potential for you in the coming weeks and months. You may be able to capitalize on your harmless weirdness… to earn rewards by expressing your charming eccentricities… to be both strange and popular.

The literal translation of the German word Kummerspeck is “grief bacon.” It refers to the weight gained by people who, while wallowing in self-pity, eat an excess of comfort food. I know more than a few Virgos who have been flirting with this development lately, although the trigger seems to be self-doubt as much as self-pity. In any case, here’s the good news: The trend is about to flip. A flow of agreeable adventures is due to begin soon. You’ll be prodded by fun challenges and provocative stimuli that will boost your confidence and discourage Kummerspeck.

Was punk rock born on June 4, 1976? A band known as the Sex Pistols played that night for a crowd of 40 people at a venue in Manchester, England. Among the audience members was Morrissey, who got so inspired that he started his own band, the Smiths. The men who would later form the Buzzcocks also saw the performance by Johnny Rotten and his crew. According to music critic David Nolan, these future pioneers came away from the show with the conclusion, “You don’t have to be a virtuoso or a musical genius to be in a band.” I see parallels between this seminal event and your life in the coming weeks.
