A MANNER OF SPEAKING

Re:“Rant/Rave”, Jan. 19, 2017 In regards to “MindYour Manners” appearing in the Jan. 19 edition, I, too, have encountered a lack of manners and politeness from the under-25-year-olds.Why are so many young people ignorant of proper manners? I am a woman in my 40s and always look and open

the door for others when I enter or exit a doorway. I have encountered many people – mostly young women – waltzing by as if it is expected that I am their doorman. They don’t have the courtesy to say thank you as they pass me, or even look me in the eye to acknowledge me. Once, I opened a door that opened towards me, and before I

could enter, a young woman (18 at the most) walked through without a glance in my direction. When I called out to her, “Someone just opened the door for you, and it would be nice if you said thank you,” she turned and told me to “fuck off.” Alas, I now find myself going through doors and not looking to see if anyone is near. I know the impolite-

I hear you, John, about the skank who didn’t have the courtesy to say thank you for the bus change. I, too, get that behaviour all the time. When I hold a door open for someone and they don’t say anything, I always say “You’re welcome,” quite loudly and with a smile. All hail Henrik Sedin’s (almost) perfect career Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown @GrantLawrence

It was a thing of beauty. There was the Canucks’ captain, Henrik Sedin, poised on the precipice of 999 NHL points, on a two-on-one rush with his twin brother Daniel. Daniel feathered a sweet pass over to Henrik, who backhanded some poetry in motion between the legs of Florida’s goalie. That ’tender was, of course, his ex-teammate and old friend, Roberto Luongo. And all of this in front of a home crowd. James Cameron couldn’t have directed it better. It was just like old times. I was off my couch and cheering for the Canucks, cheering for Daniel and Henrik, and marvelling at their Swedish touch. One-thousand points for Henrik and Daniel not far behind! Canucks history made! When I sank back down, a bit of reality sank in, too.The achievement was truly amazing, but I couldn’t help but feel that it was also bittersweet. Am I the only Canucks fan who would trade in 700-or-so of those points for one Stanley Cup? It’s been almost six years since the Canucks lost the Cup to the Boston Bruins in

Vancouver Canucks center Henrik Sedin (33) has joined the exclusive 1,000-point club. Wikimedia Commons photo their brutal seven-game series. It was finesse (Canucks) versus goons on skates (Bruins). The NHL is a copycat league, and had the Canucks won that series, you could bet like Gretzky that the league would have leaned far more toward Olympics-like skill than the smashmouthhockey that dominated the NHL for several seasons following the Bruins’ win. Despite the Sedins’ remarkable regular-season suc-

cess, it’s never been an easy skate. When they arrived in Vancouver from small-town Sweden back in 1999, they were awkward and gangly. I remember seeing them wandering around downtown, always together, and looking somewhat bewildered. When the twins hit the ice in 2000, it was pretty much the same thing. They didn’t have the immediate impact that other Canucks superstars like Pavel Bure and

Trevor Linden did. But little by little, with the reliability of a twin-turbo Volvo, the twins put up numbers and eventually turned most of their linemates into scoring stars. Just ask Jason King, Trent Klatt, Taylor Pyatt, Anson Carter and, especially, Alex Burrows. Most of them have said that you just had to keep your stick on the ice – the twins would find you. Vancouver Park Board puts off decision on cetacean plebiscite MEGAN STEWART @mhstewart

Outbursts of “Shame!” and “Moratorium!” shook the cramped hall at the park board office Monday night, as spectators unleashed the full range of their frustration after keeping it somewhat in check while commissioners debated the future of cetaceans at the Vancouver Aquarium. Demonstrators passed out signs that read, “The public demands a whale referendum,” but those opposed to cetaceans being held at the aquarium are not uniform in their preferred political outcome. Some called for a moratorium on whales and dolphins at the aquarium while waiting for the results of a plebiscite, if approved, close to two years from now. Vision commissioner Catherine Evans tabled the motion to defer discussion on the plebiscite, arguing it was a “blunt tool” that did not offer enough information or agency to the park board, but instead passes off responsibility to city council to approve. A voice from the crowd interrupted her: “We want

The Vancouver Aquarium is no longer home to any beluga whales. Dan Toulgoet photo something immediately.” Chairman Michael Wiebe, a Green Party commissioner, used his gavel for a third or fourth time to silence the gallery. Leveraging information from staff that a report could be delivered in as little as a month’s time, Evans said the park board must take a greater stance on the issue of cetaceans in captivity. A plebiscite, she said, “Is not the only tool of democracy and not necessarily the best tool of democracy,” while adding, “We may just be punting it off and not taking our responsibility. I would like there to be other options available to us. […] If council said, ‘No,’ and we are not going to

have a referendum question added to the ballot, we would be back to nowhere then.” Sarah Kirby-Yung, the NPA commissioner who first brought forward the motion on the plebiscite, suggested Evans’ request for a deferral was a “delay tactic.” Fellow NPAer John Coupar was drowned out by both jeers and applause when he took the floor and said, “I don’t understand what we need a report on.” He was making the point that a referral had deterred the opportunity for a possible plebiscite in the past. Stuart Mackinnon, the Green Party commissioner who argued for a plebiscite in 2010 as a park board commissioner, supported the deferral.

“I came fully expecting to support the motion as it stood. The referral disturbed me because I wasn’t sure when that would come back – six months, nine months, in a year – but the general manager has assured us probably in a month staff could come back with a report,” he said. When he brought forward a similar motion, the park board was subject to different rules, but when he said “It’s important to hear from the public,” he too was drowned out by shouts from the crowd. “We have been heard and heard. We keep talking,” said one voice. And, “Science keeps talking,” shouted another. A woman stood in the second row and asked how the commissioners might feel if they lived in a bathtub for 20 years. The board elected to defer the decision on the plebiscite. Kirby-Yung, Coupar and third NPA commissioner Casey Crawford voted against the motion to defer. Evans, Wiebe, Mackinnon and Erin Shum supported the deferral. Staff will prepare a report for the board. –Story courtesy of the Vancouver Courier

possession, the likes of which the league had rarely seen before, Henrik and Daniel rose through the ranks of the Canucks and the league, becoming first-line, leagueleading all-stars. Pretty much every team in the NHL adopted their patented slap-pass. They won scoring races and MVP awards, and have been nothing but prime examples of commitment and poise on and off the ice. They’ve played a thinking-

person’s style of hockey that you should be proud to show off to your kids, and their jerseys will be raised into the rafters pretty much the day after they retire. The Hall of Fame will likely come calling for the ultra-talented twins. And then there was the Stanley Cup run of 2011. The Sedins and the Canucks “slayed the dragon” that was the beastly Chicago Blackhawks, then laid waste to the Predators and the Sharks. The Bruins were next, and we all know how that went up in smoke. I’ve never quite gotten over the events of the spring of 2011 (downtown riot included), so I’ll be the first to admit I haven’t been paying close attention to the Canucks for the past few seasons. When I have tuned in, I’ve been unimpressed with the entertainment factor. But the TV was on last week for the Panthers game and point number 1,000, and I’m very glad I saw it happen. Vancouver sports fans should feel blessed to have watched the twins make magic on ice for the past 16 seasons and counting. So, congratulations on 1,000 points, Henrik. I just wish that trophy case full of individual awards and statistics had one more: the chalice it takes an entire team to win. W

BCIT nursing student who helped Halloween stabbing victim asked to come forward MARTHA PERKINS @marthajperkins

Last Halloween, a BCIT nursing student came across a young man who had been stabbed outside the Plaza of Nations. She provided first aid to the victim, who later succumbed to his injuries, before leaving the area. The Vancouver Police Department is now asking this woman to come forward to share her observations from that night. “She was doing the right thing,” Const. Jason Doucette, the VPD’s media relations officer, said at a press conference on Monday morning. “She stuck around and did her best.” The police have no reason to believe she’s trying to avoid coming forward; she might not know they would appreciate her help, Doucette said. The 911 call came in at 2am Nov. 1. Two groups of men were involved in an altercation near the taxi stand at 750 Pacific Bou-

File photo levard. Three men received stab wounds; one of them, 25-year-old Hansen Jia Chen of Burnaby, died. No charges have been laid yet. Police have already had people come forward with cellphone videos from that night but they continue to issue an appeal for more videos and photos from 9pm on Oct. 31 to 2am on Nov. 1. The BCIT nursing student and other people who might have information are asked to call 604-717-2500. “Every little piece of information is important,” Doucette said. W

City Hall, Fat Mao opened in late summer of that year to long line-ups and nightly sell-outs of its menu – several hours earlier than the intended closing time. Since then, business has steadied, although line-ups still aren’t uncommon. The tiny space (25 seats) has a long open kitchen running along one side, and seating on the other. Service can be a bit hitand-miss: One night, my server couldn’t explain the difference between the two choices of noodles with certain dishes (“Rice noodle or rice noodle.” Huh?); on another visit, I had to give several enthusiastic waves to catch anyone’s attention after waiting 30 minutes (in a half-empty room) to order another beverage. But everyone is super-friendly here, and the hiccups were just that: small interruptions in an otherwise well-run room. The menu focuses on bowls of hot, slurpy things, but don’t miss the sides. Roti with curry dipping sauce ($5.99) was itself good enough to encourage repeat visits. The bread isn’t made

in-house (JS Roti Factory in Richmond is responsible for these delightful, buttery chunks), but when paired with the thin, flavourful sauce, it made for an easy, excellent snack. Likewise, the tasty century egg ($7.99) is made elsewhere in Chinatown, but is paired with very nice house-made tofu, making for a silky textural mashup alongside fried shallot and bonito flakes. A standout was the tuna-and-mussels ceviche ($9.99), which came in a beautiful herbed dressing accompanied by excellent yam chips that I saved to go with my noodle bowl. The noodles all come in under $12, and are a decent size for the price. The northern Thai-style changmai curry ($11.99) comes with both wonton and crispy noodles, a free-range chicken leg that is almost confit, and lots of turmeric. It’s rich, a little oily, and quite fragrant. Southern Thai beef laksa reminds me of a brisket broth I enjoyed as a child; this version is heartily spiced and dotted with peanuts and dried shrimp. You can choose the wonton noodles or

steamed rice with this one. Here, again, a hint of oiliness seems to call for the absorbent rice, but it’s the noodles I’d rather have. If the soft-serve durian ice cream ($5.99) is available, give it a try, as I’ve never found the infamously funky southeast Asian fruit a palatable flavour before. Otherwise, the Vietnamese-coffee affogato ($4.99) is a palatecleansing finish. Fat Mao is also licensed now, meaning you can pair your meal with a good beer or even one of two cocktails, of which the Gin Mao ($8.99) is a good choice, with its Noilly Prat vermouth and hint of citrus. There might still be a few kinks here and there, but there’s no denying that An has created another hit in his growing restaurant empire. And if the past is any indicator, things are only looking up from here. W

When it comes to ringing in the New Year, the Chinese have one up on Western culture. Their Spring Festival celebrations last a couple of weeks, and beyond the parades, fireworks, and red envelopes filled with dough, feasting is at the centre of the revelry. At least that’s what it seems like to me. On New Year’s, the Chinese dine for good fortune. Yummy specialties like dumplings, spring rolls and noodles symbolize prosperity and a long life. According to some studies, drinking wine in moderation can also contribute to the latter. More than that, though, Chinese cooking presents a fascinating palette of flavours that invites unique wine pairings. If you’re joining in the merriment, consider including a celebratory bottle. QUINCE ROYALE Cocktail created by Kris Girard, head bartender at Torafuku. Note that the Vancouver-made Ms. Better’s Bitters are available online at MsBetters.com; quince paste is available at gourmet stores.

@TheAlchemistBC Gung hay fat choy! This Saturday (Jan. 28) ushers in the Year of the Rooster with bright red packages, shiny gold coins and festively fizzy cocktails. “It’s spring, so you want lighter flavours, and everyone loves bubbles at New Year’s,” says Kris Girard, bar manager at Torafuku restaurant, referencing the Lunar or Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival. “I think cocktails are good for any occasion, but New Year’s – everyone likes to drink a little more and it brings out the comfort of family. Plus, everyone likes Champagne.” Girard is just one of many local bartenders creating cocktails for the New Year, which is celebrated by millions of people worldwide. Festivities begin on the 28th – with parades, dragon dances, firecrackers, and red envelopes stuffed with lucky money – and wrap up two weeks later

• 1 oz (30 mL) sake • 1/2 oz (15 mL) quince syrup (see below) • ¾ oz (22 mL) lemon juice • Sparkling wine • 3 healthy dashes Ms. Better’s Lime Leaf Bitters Kris Girard crafts a golden Quince Royale in honour of Chinese New Year. Dan Toulgoet photo on what is known as the Lantern Festival. That’s two weeks of sweeping out the old year and ushering in the new with plenty of drinking and dining. Throughout the city, you can also expect to see symbols of spring, prosperity, abundance and good fortune, including golden fish, plum blossoms, red lanterns and plump tangerines. The latter adds a juicy citrus note to Micky Valens’s Chinese New Year

cocktail at Hello Goodbye Bar in Yaletown. Called the Shanghai Spritz, it’s a variation on a classic Aperol spritz made with a Chinese five-spice honey syrup and cold-pressed mandarin orange juice from Commodity Juicery (see recipe at Westender.com). “We make a lot of fun, colourful and sophisticated cocktails. It’s good to have a feature cocktail that’s part of what’s going on,” he says. “It’s a sparkling-wine cocktail, which is always cause

for celebration. And it’s going to be a glowing orange, with some star anise pods poking through.” Colour, of course, is also a big part of Chinese New Year celebrations: red for good fortune and joy, gold for good luck and prosperity, the green of lettuce leaves for wealth. In keeping with that, two of Girard’s cocktails are red, while the third, the Quince Royale, is golden. “It’s made with infused quince sake. It’s a little like

a French 75,” he says. The subtle flavours of quince – a fruit that originated in Asia and symbolizes love and fertility – mingle with fragrant lime-leaf bitters (from Vancouver’s own Ms. Better’s bitters) and, of course, bubbles for a delicately springlike cocktail. “I find it has that aspect of what we do here in the restaurant, playing with those Asian flavours, but having these background notes as well.” Girard notes that cocktails can often be a better

Craft beer embraces the lost art of barrel-aging MEGAN COLE @thegrowlerbc

In competitive industries like craft brewing, staying ahead of the curve and on top of the trends is vital to keeping consumers interested. Craft brewers are taking traditional styles and flavours and are making them their own using different ingredients. Barrels, which have been used in making spirits like bourbon, whisky and wine, have gained popularity in craft beer because of the unique flavours that can be imparted through barrel-aging. Unlike bourbon makers in the United States, who are required by federal code to use new charred-oak barrels to produce their product, breweries acquire theirs from distilleries and wineries who have already bottled their products. But with so many breweries exploring the world of barrel-aging, and there being only so many cooperages (barrel makers) left in the United States, the number of barrels available to breweries is limited. “Barrel-aging is sort of a popular thing to do these days, which means we are getting creative with where we get our barrels, because they are so in demand,” said Chloe Smith, manager of Townsite Brewing in

Townsite Brewing in Powell River barrel ages its beer in barrels sourced from wineries, whisky houses and distilleries. Staff photo Powell River. Smith added that it isn’t just harder to get barrels, it’s also more expensive. Since Townsite began barrel-aging its beers, the price has increased from $100 a barrel to $150. “We buy them from wineries, from Jack Daniel’s, from whisky houses and distilleries,” she said. “We go together with our brewing colleagues, and when they are placing orders, we

8 W January 26 - February 1, 2017

will do one together. We are reaching out to everybody to see where we can get barrels, and we are getting all kinds of stuff like fruit wine, red wine, whisky and bourbon.” Even though Jack Daniel’s, the only major distiller that makes its own barrels, produces half a million empty barrels a year, most of their empty vessels go to the Scotch whisky industry.

In the world of craft beer, Victoria’s Phillips Brewing and Malting Co. could be considered to have been ahead of the curve with barrel-aging beers. Matt Phillips, founder of Phillips, said it’s been producing barrel-aged beers for nearly seven years. “It’s definitely more difficult to get a hold of barrels now,” he said. “I think it has a lot more to do with the

Scotch whisky industry and distilleries than breweries.” But Phillips added that because those two industries are sucking up a lot of barrels, there are fewer left for the craft breweries looking for them. Phillips built a relationship with Heaven Hills Distillery in Kentucky, where they were, at one point, sourcing up to 150 barrels a year. Now Phillips is only using about 50 annually, and some of this has to do with the challenges of getting barrels with the flavour profiles the brewery looking for in its beer. While some craft breweries have looked to their partners in the spirits and wine industries, Rogue Ales and Spirits, based in Newport, Oregon decided to start coopering its own barrels. This was a natural fit with its DIY mantra, which now includes growing its own hops, producing its own honey and distilling its own spirits. Unlike other breweries that began barrel-aging its products in sourced vessels, Rogue hadn’t put beer in a barrel until it had a “real reason to do it.” “Once we got inspired to make our own barrels, we really felt we had a story to share and a product we thought would be really unique,” said Brett Joyce,

president of Rogue. In the fall of 2016, Rogue released its first beer aged in its own barrels. Their Rolling Thunder Imperial Stout is a beer that doesn’t just go from farm to glass, but from farm to barrels, made by Rogue and soaked in its own whisky, where it was aged for six months before being bottled. “Barrel-aged products provide a lot of complexity that consumers are looking for, which pairs with the experimentation that breweries are into, and there is also the rarity of barrel-aged beers,” said Joyce. “I’m glad that, in some small way, we control our own destiny by making our barrels, but that certainly wasn’t our intent the way growing our own hops was. We didn’t want to be 100 per cent reliant on the open market, and, accidentally, the barrel making provides that as well.” While Rogue may have chosen to enter the cooperage industry, it is safe to assume that most craft breweries will stick to sourcing its barrels the way they have been. But with certain barrels, like bourbon, being in high demand, those in the craft beer world, like Smith, think we’ll see brewers do that they do best: get creative and use what they can find to innovate great new beer flavours. DINING OUT

An expert’s picks: 10 of the best Chinese restaurants LEE MAN @westender

The quality of Chinese restaurants continues to improve around the world as China’s growing middle class travels and lives abroad with greater frequency. But Metro Vancouver’s number and diversity of experienced restaurateurs, resourceful suppliers and knowledgeable diners has created an unmatched excellence at every level – from inexpensive holes-inthe-wall to budget-destroying fine-dining temples. I’ve written about and judged Chinese food for over a decade, and here, in alphabetical order, are 10 I consider to be among our best.

ALVIN GARDEN

4850 Imperial, Burnaby (No website) Like it really hot? Beef with pickled peppers, cuminspiked lamb, and stir-fried smoked mushrooms and bacon each pack afterburner heat. Icy beer, soothing rice, and delicious tea-smoked duck will provide muchneeded relief to the palate. Serious spice-heads who are tempted to risk Big Heat (they call it “da la”), consider yourselves warned.

BAO BEI CHINESE BRASSERIE

163 Keefer Bao-Bei.ca With organic and sustainable ingredients, and informed traditional techniques, Bao Bei defines how Vancouver has embraced modern Chinese cuisine. Sharp Sichuan cucumbers awaken the appetite, lamb shao bin warms with cumin and spice, and fried rice hums with hot wok immediacy. The smart cocktails, enthusiastic service, and stylish room sparkle with ease and sophistication.

CHEF TONY SEAFOOD RESTAURANT

101-4600 No. 3 Rd., Richmond ChefTonyCanada.com/en Among the new ultra-

high-end Chinese restaurants, Chef Tony has best made the leap from shiny novelty to local favourite. The baked goods at dim sum are superb – particularly the legendary steamed egg sponge cake. Dinner dishes such as bubbling ling cod hot pot, roasted squab, and Dungeness crab in spicy eggplant sauce glow with exuberant generosity.

DYNASTY SEAFOOD RESTAURANT

108-777 W. Broadway Dynasty-Restaurant.ca Chef Sam Leong Dynasty ambitiously imbues Cantonese cooking with West Coast sensibilities of clean lightness. Dim sum must-orders include pepper pork pastry, mushroom dumplings, and stir-fried Buddha’s feast. For dinner, Dungeness crab – served with spicy garlic chips over sticky rice – is a showstopper, and the Peking duck is the best around.

GOLDEN PARAMOUNT SEAFOOD RESTAURANT

8071 Park Rd., Richmond (No website) Blink and you’ll miss this hidden gem of restrained Cantonese cooking. The dim sum menu is full of delicate charmers like crab-andpork dumplings, daikon spring rolls, and deep-fried wontons. A dinner of their salt baked chicken, panfried oysters, and superlative sweet-and-sour pork is both homey and sophisticated.

HK BBQ MASTER

4651 No. 3 Rd., Richmond (No website) The gloriously succulent BBQ pork (char sui) draws aficionados from across Metro Vancouver. (Those in the know ask for both cuts: half fatty, half lean.) Take it to go, or settle in for an unpretentious meal of roasted meats over rice. Don’t let the strange location (in the parking lot under Real Canadian Superstore) or the line-ups put you off. It’s that good.

The tan tan noodles at Long’s Noodle House draw a devoted crowd to the tiny Main Street spot. William Luk/Chinese Restaurant Awards

KALVIN’S SZECHUEN RESTAURANT

5225 Victoria (No website) The crowd-pleasing flavours of Sichuan cuisine are executed with Taiwanese refinement at this long-standing room. Fried pork in red fermented sauce, chili stir-fried shredded beef with bamboo shoots, and tilapia blanketed under a pungent hot bean sauce are all firm favourites. Great prices, and the jostling atmosphere actually adds to the family-friendly charm.

4023 Cambie LandmarkHotPot.com This immensely popular hot pot restaurant distinguishes itself with fastidiously sourced seafood (and crippling prices to match). Smart diners build a delicious meal by focusing on the gorgeous vegetables, dumplings, and iced tofu. Don’t miss the magically delicate house-made fish tofu puffs, fried silver fish with spicy salt, and meltingly fatty beef.

KIRIN RESTAURANT

4853 Main (No website) Tender-skinned steamed soup buns bursting with broth, tan tan noodles richly slicked in a dark meat sauce, and tender drunken chicken are just a few of the menu items that draw a devoted crowd. The tiny space is perpetually packed, but Sandy, the force-of-nature hostess, keeps things moving at a brisk pace – whether you like or not. W

Various locations KirinRestaurants.com Kirin was a pioneer in applying classic Cantonese technique with top local ingredients to create a distinctive Vancouver style of Chinese food. Seasonal fresh sheets and ever-changing dim sum menus reflect the best of the season. When in season, there’s no better place to feast on local spot prawns (wokseared with soy sauce).

Barbara-Jo’s Books to Cooks to close MARTHA PERKINS @marthajperkins

Barbara-Jo McIntosh’s sister owns lots of cookbooks, but when she needs to look up a recipe, she’s more likely to go onto the Internet, prop her computer on her kitchen counter and begin to cook. The recipe she’s following is probably in one of her cookbooks, but there’s an ease to searching for it online rather than on her bookshelf.

Westender.com

So McIntosh understands why fewer people are coming to Barbara-Jo’s Books to Cooks on West 2nd Ave. And now she needs her loyal fans to understand why she’s closing Vancouver’s venerable all-things-culinary destination at the end of February. “It’s a societal shift and you have to find another way. Everything’s changed so I had to change too,” she says. “But I have to change

A spectacular evening of music, song and film by celebrated indigenous artists from Australia

Cavalia’s ‘Odysseo’ offers breathtaking acrobatics alongside additional feats of horse and human collaboration. Jak Wonderly photo

World-largest horse show returns SANDRA THOMAS @sthomas10

There’s a scene in Cavalia’s Odysseo that sees costumed handlers and horses taking to the stage with not a bridal, harness or saddle in sight. In that scene, there’s also no physical contact made between horse and human as they walk the stage, yet the connection between the two is obvious. Call it telepathy, call it training, call it what you like, but the bond between animal and handler is palpable. It’s just one of the goosebump-inducing scenes that makes up Odysseo, considered the world’s largest touring production, that this season brings together 70 horses and 45 artists in a spectacular journey of discovery, featuring some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes as backdrop. Looking for pure equine artistry? The show includes what’s known as a “liberty act,” because the purebred Arabian horses are directed

10 W January 26 - February 1, 2017

only by the soft murmurs of their trainer, and a “caravan act,” which comprises too many humans and horses on stage to count. Cavalia founder and artistic director Normand Latourelle brings together equestrian arts, acrobatics and hightech theatrical effects for this larger-than-life show. In celebration of this country’s 150th birthday, Cavalia is interrupting its US tour to launch a multi-city Canadian run with Odysseo, starting in Vancouver on Jan. 31. Odysseo’s theatrical effects are as spectacular as they are numerous, and include a state-of-the art projection screen, a life-sized merrygo-round (custom-built for the show), a three-storey mountain for dazzling perspectives and a lake made up of 40,000 gallons of recycled water, which magically appears for a dramatic finale. Fittingly, the entire show takes place under the Big Top, a white tent standing 124-feet tall, which has been erected in Vancouver at the

Olympic Village grounds near the Cambie Street Bridge. There, horses, trainers and performers will transport their audiences to the desert and savanna of Africa, the American Southwest, the Northern Lights, an ice cave and Easter Island without them ever leaving their seats. The Odysseo big top is more than twice as large as the one created for Cavalia’s original production. For more information and tickets, visit Cavalia.net or call 1-866-999-8111. Special VIP tickets include premium seats, a buffet dinner and an exclusive visit to the stables after the show. Odysseo runs until Feb. 19. W

REASONS YOU NEED TO SEE SHEN YUN THIS SEASON

1. Because millions have seen it and loved its uplifting energy.

2. Because classical Chinese dance has 5,000 years of history and opens your eyes to wonders.

3. Because of its unique live orchestra that blends East and West. 4. Because it features groundbreaking animated backdrops that immerse you in the action.

5. Because each year Shen Yun performs an entirely new program, and

Vancouver actor Patrick Sabongui is taking names and making waves in the newest season of Homeland. Showtime’s juggernaut political thriller – which stars Emmy Award-winner Claire Danes as an embattled intelligence agent – kicked off its highly anticipated sixth season on Jan. 15. Sabongui recurs throughout the season as Reda Hashem, a purposeful New York City law professor who runs a non-profit organization that defends wrongly accused MuslimAmericans. “I’ve heard from very close friends, ‘I had no idea how the CIA worked until I watched that show,’ and, sure, the show takes creative liberties, but it does shed some light on how that whole universe works,” says Sabongui, who also plays Captain David Singh on The CW’s locally shot superhero show The Flash and Hassan Al Afshar on Crackle’s The Art of More. “We’re conscious of that on this show,” he continues, “and that’s part of what sets this show apart.” The versatile actor has

tackled a similar character before, albeit it in a vastly different venue: Sabongui played New York City lawyer Amir Kapoor in Ayad Akhtar’s Pulitzer Prizewinning play Disgraced at Vancouver’s Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage in 2015 – a character who, unlike Reda, does everything he can to distance himself from civil rights cases. “When I first read Reda’s character, and thought, ‘What do I know about this, what do I connect to about this?’ and then it hit me all of a sudden: this is Amir Kapoor five years later, when he has realized, ‘I’ve been pushing away my Islamic heritage for so long, and now I’m going to embrace it and become an advocate for my people,’” Sabongui says. He adds: “I’m sure that the Homeland writers, that’s not where their heads were at, but for me, it was informative. It informs details about Reda, and where he came from, and the journey that maybe he’s been on.” On Homeland, Sabongui shares the bulk of his scenes with Danes, who he describes as “no joke. She is as good as you think she is. She is so prepared and so available and what I learned from working with her so closely is to keep searching and keep

digging deeper, and every time you play the scene, there’s an opportunity to learn something from it and to move past what you came in prepared with.” Homeland’s new season follows a transfer of power from one federal administration to the next. The timeliness of this particular story point is not lost on Sabongui and his co-stars. “I think everyone is acutely aware that we’re working on something that is meaningful and has social influence,” says Sabongui. “The conversations that happen around the table are very conscious, and they include social impact. What are we doing? What are we saying? What are people going to learn from this? “What I’ve learned is that, as an artist, you never stop growing, and you hopefully never stop taking part in work that has a social impact, and realizing that, and not taking that for granted, and acknowledging that you have a responsibility to do the right thing with your work.” W • Homeland (@SHO_ Homeland) airs Sundays on Showtime. FILM & TV

Short Film Festival showcases the power of small Sabrina Furminger Reel People @Sabrinarmf

If you want to acquaint yourself with the next generation of Vancouver filmmakers, expect to watch a ton of short films. Some movie fans immediately recoil at the pairing of those two words. The genre has a not-completely-unwarranted reputation for tedium. They tend to be associated with film-school students and newbies who want to try out an idea for a feature film before they have the funds and expertise to bring a bigger project to fruition. And yes, sometimes they’re dreck. But more often than not – especially in Vancouver, where we have a concentration of scrappy showbiz professionals with stories to tell, and the drive and mad skills to commit them to film – short films are compelling, satisfying, audacious and really, really good. This truth is crystal clear at the Vancouver Short Film Festival (VSFF).The seventh edition of the annual fest,

which runs this week at the Vancity Theatre, screens more than two-dozen live-action, animated, and digital shorts by emerging and established local, national and international filmmakers.VSFF’s films have one thing in common: a run-time somewhere between two and 19 minutes. Other than that, the line-up runs the gamut of genres and voices, from dystopian sci-fi to documentary to horrorcomedy. A primo example of the latter is I LoveYou So Much It’s Killing Them, directed, edited and co-written by Joel Ashton McCarthy. The Vancouver filmmaker’s eclectic filmography includes several awardwinning feature films (like his dark comedy Shooting the Musical, and the documentary Taking My Parents to Burning Man) and shorts (most recently Fathers and Son, which screened at the 2016 Whistler Film Festival). I LoveYou So Much It’s Killing Them follows Vivian, a nerdy, lonely serial killer whose three loves are math, accounting and killing random people. The original version had a male protagonist, but “we decided it would be more interesting if it was a female

Amelia Lyttle stars as Young Vivian in I Love You So Much It’s Killing Them. Contributed photo serial killer, because women should be able to kill people on screen,” says McCarthy, in a recent phone interview. It’s a parody of vanilla short films about shy office workers who fall in love with their new co-workers, says McCarthy. “I think we’ve seen that short film a million times, and we’re so sick of it.We wanted to play with a format we’ve seen a million times and add, ‘Oh, she happens to be a really messed up serial killer on the side,’ but it’s not all about that.” In this way, I LoveYou So Much It’s Killing Them is similar to Shooting the Musical (about film-school grads making a musical about a school

shooting) and another McCarthy short, Why Does God Hate Me? (a coming-of-age comedy about a 14-year-old boy whose best friend tries to “cure” him of being gay): It’s irreverent. “Either we’re dealing with subject matter that some people are uncomfortable with, or we’re making jokes that cross the line,” says the filmmaker. “We don’t try to make stuff that’s going to be loved by every single human being.” “In my other films, I’ve tackled religion and other things that people get very sensitive about, and I’ve found that there are people who will take that journey with you,” adds McCarthy, who is cur-

rently shooting a web series titled Inconceivable, about an unplanned pregnancy between friends. I LoveYou So Much It’s Killing Them was created as part of last year’s Crazy 8s filmmaking competition, wherein six teams film and finesse a short in eight days. Crazy 8s’ pressure-cooker conditions – as well as the cash and production package that supplies everything needed to shoot and lock a film in the allotted time – only served to make the film better, according to McCarthy. “It wasn’t this backyard filmmaking that we were used to.We had a crew that was an army.We had three days to shoot, five

days for post[-production], and 13 locations. It made me really obsess over the details. We ended up shooting exactly what we needed for the film – nothing more and nothing less.” Last August, I LoveYou So Much It’s Killing Them beat out hundreds of submissions from all over the world to win the award for best short in the third annual Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival in Chicago. Other highlights on the VSFF schedule include Brenda at 10, 15, 20, in which director Ana de Lara intertwines three time periods in the life of a breast-cancer survivor, with a focus on the character’s relationship with her breasts; Arun Fryer’s Before She’s Gone, a documentary love story about a 67-year marriage and the husband’s role as caretaker after his wife is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s; and Counter Act, an awardwinning short from the Affolter Brothers about a 1960s lunch-counter protest. After an unusually large order is placed, he heads to California only to find a tiny burger joint being run by siblings Mac (John Carroll Lynch) and Dick (Nick Offerman) McDonald. Kroc is immediately impressed with their speedy service and sets his sights on franchise opportunities; the McDonalds are a little reluctant. At this point, things get juicier than a Big Mac as the shrewd capitalist slowly finagles the company to create his own legacy. Keaton is sensational in the complex, multilayered role; you know he’s a bit shady but his gritty determination makes

you want him to succeed. The real sympathies, and heart, of the story lie with Mac and Dick. Lynch and Offerman are excellent in their respective roles as one remains naively optimistic and the other’s dire warnings go unheeded. Laura Dern is also particularly effective as Kroc’s wife, playing a steadfast but increasingly distant partner through her husband’s tumultuous financial dealings. As far as biopics go, The Founder is mediocre in execution and contains a rather dry legalesefilled middle section, but there can be no denying Keaton’s riveting performance in an utterly compelling saga. There’s nothing typical about the Lemon Twigs GREGORY ADAMS @westender

It’s only two days into the Lemon Twigs’ 2017 North American tour when Westender catches multiinstrumentalist/vocalist Brian D’Addario on the phone, but things have already gotten a bit shaky for the group. That’s not to say that the shows haven’t been well received. The previous night’s performance in Philadelphia had the crowd fully embracing the psych-pop sounds of D’Addario and younger brother Michael’s recent Do Hollywood album. Instead, the teenage prodigy explains that the Long Island outfit’s bass drum is currently missing a couple of legs, and thus keeps bouncing off its mark during each song. “We just made a stop at Home Depot to get a sand bag. Did we get the sand bag? No. It was a failed attempt,” he says with laugh, from inside a van en route to Boston. Despite the group’s onstage plight, it’s fitting that their equipment is acting somewhat unruly. Released last October, Do Hollywood is an ambitious and awesomely all-over-theplace affair.Though full of sweetened sounds, the album takes multiple left turns through the annals of rock. Take “Those Days is Co-

The teen wunderkinds play the Cobalt Feb. 1. Autumn de Wilde photo min’ Soon,” which conjures flapper-jazz whimsy and the Beatles’ “Ob-La-Di, Ob-LaDa” force-filtered through the prism of ’70s glam. The

Brian-sung “These Words” offers AM-radio softness before upping the eccentricity with beer-parlour piano and grininducing xylophone solos.

Michael’s “As Long as We’re Together” is a Big Star-sized rock ballad built for making out in the back of your grandparents’ Dodge Polara.

Though performed on record almost entirely by the D’Addario brothers (keyboardist Danny Ayala and bassist Megan Zeankowski fill out the live band), there wasn’t much collaboration on the songwriting side of Do Hollywood. Instead, the siblings worked out the arrangements of their respective tracks on their own before bringing them into the studio. “[Michael] likes really to-thepoint lyrics, and I like lyrics that are dressed up in different ways,” says D’Addario. “I don’t want to give too much away about my life.” While the elder sibling may keep things oblique in song, he and Michael are more than comfortable with being in the public eye. Before hitting stages as the Lemon Twigs, the pair were child actors racking up IMDB credits in CSI: NY (Brian) and horror flick Sinister (Michael). The pair also occasionally upload staged basement and backyard brawls ontoYouTube as part of their Miz Rules Wrestling collective. Brian “fights” as The BumbleBee, a selfdescribed “nutcase” who has beefed with a guy in an Easter Bunny costume (fittingly called “The Bunny”) and a million-dollar minor named Cash W. Smellington.

“We’ve just watched wrestling since we were really little and love how ridiculous it is,” says D’Addario. “There’s a certain aspect of wrestling that’s kind of lost because they try to be subtle, like it’s real life or whatever. In the ’80s, it was really over-the-top and crazy.” While a trash-talkin’ wrestling event, filmed over the holidays in Long Island, is expected to go online at some point, the D’Addarios have even more in store as the Lemon Twigs. A followup to Do Hollywood is in the works, and will be the first to find the brothers writing material together. (“There’s going to be a unifying concept that ties it together,” D’Addario teases). Until then, they’ll be treating their steadily growing fan base – referred to as Twiglets – to more concerts. That is, if they can find a sandbag. “Now we’re in the parking lot ofWalmart and we’re going to give it a shot here,” D’Addario reports as the conversation comes to a close, adding dryly, “And if they don’t have it here, then I guess we’re not going to play tonight.” W • The Lemon Twigs play the Cobalt on Wednesday, Feb. 1.

‘Shake’ brings local musicians together in the fight against Parkinson’s MICHAEL WHITE @westendervan

When the R&B quintet Champagne Republic split up two years ago, its frontwoman, Emily Chambers, was able to accomplish something as a solo singersongwriter that she never could within what she describes as the “insular” confines of her former band: cultivate a proper relationship with the Vancouver music community at large. “I felt like I’d made enough connections in this city, musically and otherwise, that I could put something together that people would want to be a part of,” she recalls. Contemplating what that something could be, the North Shore native’s thoughts turned to her father, who had been diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s disease at the age of 48. In late 2015, she hit upon the idea of a multiband concert benefitting the Parkinson Society of British Columbia. The result was Shake, Shake, Shake, and it brought 350 through the doors of Chinatown’s Imperial nightclub, raising more than $16,000. It returns Friday (Jan. 27) for its second

Shake, Shake, Shake founder Emily Chambers. Contributed photo edition with the aim to raise $25,000. For Chambers, the greatest accomplish of the inaugural Shake was that it attracted a audience that usually has little involvement with – or interest in – Parkinson’s fundraising. “A lot of the

14 W January 26 - February 1, 2017

things that the Parkinson Society does caters to an older crowd,” she says. “Obviously, most of the people on their mailing list are people who are affected with Parkinson’s, which is usually diagnosed after 50. Early onset is only 10 per cent of people who

have it.” Shake drew in “a demographic they hadn’t reached before. We framed it as a concert in benefit of Parkinson’s – I didn’t want it to be an information session. I wanted young people to come out to see bands coming together, and know that

they were doing something for a cause that maybe they didn’t know so much about.” “I was surprised to see how many people are affected by Parkinson’s in some way,” she continues. “Among the musicians I reached out to, a lot of them were only an arm’s length from a person they know who has the disease – a grandparent or a cousin or a mom’s friend – so everyone was really stoked to be performing on the bill. I got people excited about the night, and then the cause was just the cherry on top.” This year, Chambers performs backed by an eightpiece band, largely playing tracks from her recently released album, Magnolia. Joining her on the bill are soul/ hip-hop trio I M U R, veteran R&B artist (and original Ohio Players member) Dutch Robinson, and Victoria bluesman Jesse Roper. Chambers comes to this weekend’s Shake having learned that music and Parkinson’s complement one another in ways beyond fundraising. As with other ailments whose victims have experienced a breakthrough from treatment that embraces neuroplasticity (in essence, the belief that the brain can be reprogrammed

to restore proper function, without drugs or surgery), many Parkinson’s patients have been found to respond well to therapies that incorporate dancing, singing and timekeeping. Chambers took part last year in SongShine training, which uses singing to help people whose voice has been affected by Parkinson’s, other neurological disorders or aging. “Parkinson’s doesn’t make you shake; medication does. Parkinson’s makes you freeze up,” Chambers explains. “My dad can get frozen, but if you give him a beat or a pulse or a song – sometimes getting your mind to go somewhere else, you’ll be able to at least take a step.” Speaking of her dad, it was he who suggested the name for Chambers’s event. “He hasn’t lost his sense of humour,” she says, laughing. W • Shake, Shake, Shake takes place Friday, Jan. 27, at the Imperial (319 Main), 7:30pm. Tickets $25 from ImperialVancouver.com; $30 at the door. VIP Reception tickets $125 in advance only. Donations can be made to Parkinson.bc.ca.

Fitness on demand

Navigating the world of online trainers, YouTube yogis and fitness apps AMY WATKINS @writeway2travel

Shopping, dating, communicating – we live our lives online. Now, the rise of million-subscriber YouTube channels like Yoga With Adriene, and Instagram fitness celebrities like Kayla Itsines (Bikini Body Guides and the Sweat with Kayla app) and Toronto’s Lyzabeth Lopez (Hourglass Workout), has taken personal training into the virtual realm, too. Local fitness model turned trainer Meghan Amelia Wilson has noticed an increase in clients contacting her via Instagram (@ meghanameila). “People like to see photos and videos, so it helps get clients in,” she says. “People feel like they have a personal connection to you. Before, you just went into the local gym and it was whoever is available. Now you can find a trainer anywhere in the world, and that’s incredible.” With online training typically costing between $100 to $1,000 a month, it pays to find a customized program that includes personal chats, emails, texts or Skype calls. “Do your research,” advises Wilson. “Anyone can post a photo of themselves at the gym and say they are a personal trainer. You’re throwing money down the drain and can hurt yourself if you don’t know what you’re doing.” Catherine Roscoe Barr launched The Life Deli-

cious in 2013, and as word of her “personal training for mind, body and spirit” spread outside of Vancouver, she used Skype to work with international clients. “Online training removes barriers. There’s no commute, often it’s more cost-effective, and you can do it from the comfort of wherever you are,” she says. “You can connect with people online… and get a good feel for whether you want to work with them, regardless of where they are. It opens a great pool of personality, talent and expertise. The disadvantage is [it lacks] the energy exchange you get in real life:You can’t finish a session with a high-five or a hug!” One of Roscoe Barr’s clients, Eric Pateman, has a busy travel schedule as owner of the Edible Canada restaurant and shop, so the online option worked for his lifestyle. “Trying to set a regularly scheduled in-person meeting was close to impossible, so having the flexibility to use Skype was amazing,” he says. “The biggest thing is finding someone you can connect with that has that energy. It didn’t matter if we met in person or on Skype. Catherine’s always so incredibly positive, you know she’s going to inspire you.” Inspiration also comes from regular communication, as even professional athletes can find motivation challenging at times. Former NFL player Mitch Berger uses his friend (and former CFL player) Tommy Europe’s app. Now a stunt performer and star of the TV shows Bulging Brides and The Last 10 Pounds Bootcamp, Europe began offering online training 10 years ago in

order to reach more people. “The last year and a half of training with Tommy has got me in the best shape of my life,” says Berger. “I’m very committed, but once in a while, if I’m very tired or don’t want to do something, the daily reminder inspires me to do it.” “It’s easy to b.s. and check in and say you’ve done [the training]; you definitely have to want to do it,” says Europe. “If someone is not motivated at all, then online training is not for them. It’s like buying a treadmill and thinking you’ll be running every day.” Europe suggests taking a couple of in-person sessions with a personal trainer before you head online, as proper form is important and some people end up injuring themselves if they lift more than they can handle. His online programs range from the Tommy Europe Fitness app to the 4 Weeks to a New You and TE60SHRED programs. “Constantly encouraging and offering variety is key,” he explains. “Through my app, people can message me, get their programs, get email alerts reminding them they have a work out the next day, check in, and track what they are doing. It’s an extra bit of accountability. Because we have our phones with us all the time, it doesn’t really matter where they are. It keeps them motivated.” But motivation doesn’t have to cost money. Free fitness apps can be a “pocket personal trainer” if you have the willpower and the Wi-Fi. MOVR is a new app that creates customized workouts using algorithms based on questions and five ranges of motion.

The Life Delicious founder Catherine Roscoe Barr is among a growing number of personal trainers using digital tools to help clients get in, and stay in, shape. Dan Toulgoet photo “I wanted to bust the myth that working as hard as you can from a template isn’t the way to see long-term change,” says app creator Aaron de Jung, founder of Kitsilano’s 108 Movement Studio. “I see a huge disparity between what people actually need and what they do in regards to their bodies. As a personal trainer, I’ve de-

veloped a movement system that works for my clients, and I wanted to bring it to life and share it with as many people as possible.” Getting fit online is not just a solitary sport. BCbased 5F is a new “Tinder for fitness buddies” app that connects people looking for a platonic tennis partner, running mate or gym friend.

“Thanks to dating apps, people are comfortable using a service like 5F to connect online,” says app founder Urs Camenisch. “There are lots of workout apps and tracking apps, including GPS. 5F is taking a bit of a different angle… Somebody has to motivate everyone to actually use all those other workout apps.” W

SEX

Ask Mish: How do I shut my mother up about my dating life? Sex with Mish Way

@MyszkaWay

I’m a 28-year-old single woman. I have a busy job in the television industry and it sucks my life away. I don’t mind, because I love what I do and I’ve worked really hard to get where I am. However, Valentine’s Day is coming around the corner again, and it’s not so much that I care that I’m single, but that everyone else in my life does. Whereas everyone else is just kind of annoying like a fly, my mother is a big, fat elephant sitting in the doorway. I ended a long-term relationship years ago with a guy who my family absolutely adored. In fact, I think they loved him more than I did at the end. Anyway, every Valentine’s Day, my mother brings up the fact that I’m single, which usually leads to her talking about my ex and how it was such a mistake to let him go. It’s getting exhausting. It’s been almost five years. Although I’ve not had another serious relationship since him, I’ve dated many other people and enjoyed myself. I’m fine

with where I’m at right now, but I just can’t deal with her clinging onto the past. I honestly feel like she won’t stop until I start dating someone seriously again. I don’t want to go through this with her again, but it’s very hard to get through to my mother. Furthermore, I can’t even talk to her about the guys I casually see because she’s so old-school and uptight that she won’t approve. (I only introduce my family to people I would consider marrying because it’s such an ordeal.) How do I deal with my mother? I’m fed up and about to lash out at her, which I don’t want to do.

First off, congratulations on your successful career and being content in your life choices. I’m happy that you’re happy. Now, let’s get down to dealing with the woman who raised you. I’m not a mother (yet) and I assume you aren’t either. Whenever my parents do anything that drives me nuts, I try to remind myself that I have absolutely no clue what it means to raise a child into an adult, and I give them a break. I was never easy. When I was a baby, I had colic and cried every minute

Patience is key when dealing with parents. iStock photo of every day for over a year. As a child, I was an annoying showboat who took everything I did much too seriously. As a teenager, I was a rebellious pest who always thought she was right. I have some making up to do. My mom has never annoyed me or pissed me off. I was trying to think of a relatable time to share with you, but I can’t. My mother is incredible. She encouraged me, stood up for me, and always made me laugh. She’s an amazing mother. We rarely fought. I remember she hit me once. I back-sassed her and called her a bitch. I totally deserved it. A bitch is one thing my mother surely isn’t.

The point is that parents are crazy because having children makes them crazy. You’re lucky if you make it to adulthood able to be semi-friends. A mother can’t be anything but your mother. That’s her job. We’ve all seen what happens when your mother treats you like a friend:You end up snorting meth together and competing for boyfriends. Your mother carried you around for nine months and then she pushed your melon head out of her vagina. After hours of torturous contractions, she squeezed your tiny, jellyfish body out through her birth canal like you were the world’s biggest

shit, stretching herself to accommodate the size of your skull. Then, after all the ripping, tearing, pushing and placenta were done, she went home and, for the next 28 years, managed to raise you into the competent, successful woman you are today. She probably wasn’t perfect all the time, but who is? She did her best. Being a mother is the hardest job in the world. It’s a 24/7 position that demands 100 percent of your being, and that kind of work starts to make people mental.Your mother is just riding the earthquake of your birth into her own dementia. I know how annoying it must be to hear her brokenrecord comments about your love life, but there is the right way to put your foot down. You need to do a few things here and they all require honestly with a pinch of biting your tongue. This Valentine’s Day, when your mother calls you up for her yearly speech, tell her the truth. Tell her that you are happy just how you are, and that you do date people casually, but no one has been serious enough to bring home yet. Tell her exactly what you told me about you

ex.Yes, you loved him and he loved you, but it’s over and has been for years, and it frustrates you that she won’t let go. If she loves you, then she needs to let go with you. Listen to what she has to say and don’t argue with her. (Bite your tongue.) Really listen. Do not interrupt her no matter how many times she does it to you. I can’t stress that enough. As a difficult person, I know how annoying it can be to get through our heads. However, sometimes we need to be cracked open like a coconut. It requires the right tools and some elbow grease. You can get through to your mother. Speak calmly but directly. Remember that you love her and she loves you. She only fusses over you because she cares what happens to you. The opposite of love is indifference. Being stuck with a mother who doesn’t give a shit would hurt a lot worse. W

As the holiday décor gets tucked away for another year, we have an opportunity to give an easy refresh to our homes and our selves, to kick off the NewYear in style. Not just an aesthetic makeover, this is the time of year to invest in pieces that offer double-duty options for improving the home while boosting personal style.

This week, I’ve rounded up a selection of a few of my fave décor finds that offer benefits from personal wellness to organization.Whether it’s something to purify your space, add a sense of Zen and energy to the room, or keep your life on track, these are my top picks for the year ahead.

1. DYSON PURE HOT + COOL LINK

One of the essentials for a truly clean home is an air purifier. Dyson’s latest venture into home purification, the Pure Hot + Cool Link, takes

the industry to the next level by doubling as a heater during the winter months and a cooling system in warmer months. From a functional standpoint, the device has the ability to remove 99.97 per cent of all allergens and pollutants with its 360-degree HEPA filter, and it also has a layer of active carbon granules to capture odours and VOCs from within the home. From a style perspective, the Pure Link fits into any décor with its sleek silhouette and gloss-white finish, plus a space-saving size that works even for small

10 books to motivate you in 2017 SIOBHAN LIDDER @siobhan_lidder

2017 is a fresh new start. Here are 10 books that will keep that motivation up throughout the year! All books available at Chapters.indigo.ca.

holistic nutritionist Joy McCarthy has released a 10-day detox plan along with 100 new detox-friendly recipes. $32

Food, Health and Happiness by Oprah Winfrey Oprah Winfrey shares her favourite recipes with a healthy spin. $45 MUJI Canada will follow up its pop-up shop with two permanent locations in Vancouver this year. Pictured: the Japanese brand’s iconic wall-mounted CD player. Contributed photo

Canada’s largest MUJI store coming soon Aileen Lalor Style File @AileenLalor

Different countries have different aesthetics – French chic, Brit eclectic formality or pretty-pretty, and American sportswear. The Japanese look is typically minimalist, perhaps with a touch of the avantgarde – an extra sleeve for that tricky third arm you’ve been hiding – or a little bit of kitsch. And we absolutely love it. My family and I moved to Vancouver from Asia and it was a fashion wrench because of the loss of two specific stores: Muji and Uniqlo. Now, there’s confirmation that Muji is coming our way. Its pop-up at the Fairmont Pacific Rim is open Jan. 27 to Feb. 28, and will be followed by two permanent stores on Robson and in Metrotown later this year. Meanwhile, Uniqlo opened last fall in Toronto, and rumour has it ecommerce is arriving here very soon. Here’s a breakdown of what both brands are about.

MUJI

The stores of this 37-yearold brand are the most peaceful and orderly place on earth: Products have no logos

or excess, there’s a soft, folksy soundtrack and lots of neutral colours. The brand makes everything from furniture to fashion; beauty products to bedding. Stationery is a big favourite, as are the simple and elegant wooden kids’ toys. Fashion-wise, it makes great tunics, shirts, jeans, knitwear and simple sneakers. The flagship store in Ginza,Tokyo, even has an in-store optical shop where you can get prescription spectacles within the hour. While it doesn’t reveal its roster of collaborators, it’s known that they include Naoto Fukasawa, who created Muji’s iconic wall-mounted CD player, andThonet, Germany’s oldest furniture company. The Vancouver pop-up will have a carefully curated selection of lifestyle items, including ultrasonic aroma diffusers and essential oils, Fukasawa’s CD player, and stationery. It will be a part of Fairmont Pacific Rim’s Japan Unlayered exhibition, which celebrates Japanese design, food and culture. FYI, it’s anticipated that the pop-up will be so popular that advance reservations will be required.Visit Eventbrite to sign up. Note: There’s no confirmation regarding the opening dates of the two permanent locations, but Retail In-

sider reports (and our sources confirm) that the branch on the 1100 block of Robson will be the largest in Canada at 10,000 sq. ft., while the Metrotown store will be a still substantial 8,000 sq. ft.

UNIQLO

We could have done with a branch of this 67-year-old brand in Vancouver over the past few weeks. It makes fantastic, affordable cold-weather gear such as down jackets and thermal undergarments. There are also edgy graphic T-shirts under its pop-culture line, UT, as well as great basics. But the headline-grabbers are the designer collaborations. Fashion icon Inès de la Fressange and designers Hana Tajima and Christophe Lemaire have created collections for Spring/Summer 2017. Previous partners include Carine Roitfeld, Opening Ceremony and Pharrell Williams. There was also the amazing, sadly defunct +J line by Jil Sander, which formed many a fashion editor’s wardrobe for a few seasons. The brand is not confirming its online launch, nor the rumours of bricks-andmortar stores in Vancouver, but we reckon both are just around the corner.Till then, it’s worth the price of a flight to Toronto to stock up. LGBTQ Monthly Events February 2017 February may be short of days but certainly not short of activities for the community. Fans of exhibitions have the choice between Taboo, Naughty But Nice Show or more sedate, the BC Home and Garden Show. Why not learn the Argentine Tango with HiM and then strut your stuff at Pride’s Unicorn Ball later in the month? If dance is not your thing you could catch one of the 2 performances of “Singing Can Be A Drag” by Vancouvers Men’s Chorus. Brian Burke of the Calgary Flames is unusual in the world of professional sports as an advocate on LGBTQ issues. Catch him at a breakfast arranged by the Canadian Club of Vancouver. In another sport, it’s time to to sign up with WESA for the 2017 slo-pitch season. Details of all the selected events in the coming month are shown on the right. Local buyers help drive BC apartment sales higher in 2016 PETER MITHAM @bivnews

BILLION-DOLLAR YEAR

Apartment sales logged another blockbuster year in 2016, even though numbers didn’t quite match those logged in 2015. A total of 174 purpose-built rental properties worth nearly $1.5 billion changed hands in 2016, according to numbers compiled by David and Mark Goodman, who recently added Cynthia Jagger to their team at HQ Real Estate Services Ltd.This was down four per cent from 2015. About $3 billion in apartment properties changed hands in the past two years, more than in the previous five years combined. However, the number of properties represented by those dollars was far lower – 355 in the past two years versus 510 between 2010 and 2014. Breaking down the sale prices, the dramatic shift in asset values becomes clearer.

This past year, the average price per suite in Metro Vancouver rose 52 per cent to $377,000, well above the average of $248,000 in 2015. Driven by redevelopment and densification potential, the upward movement of prices was particularly in evidence in Marpole. With its proximity to the Canada rapid-transit line, Marpole is among the key areas next in line for redevelopment in Vancouver. While suite prices in East Van were relatively flat, values in Marpole jumped 43 per cent to $351,000. David Goodman said buyers were primarily local, with no offshore purchasers.

LOCAL STRENGTH

The recent sale of 833 West Pender to an undisclosed local buyer also reiterates the strong presence of locals in the Vancouver investment market. The building, purpose-built for the Edward Chapman clothing company in the 1960s, sold for $19 million on

Shutterstock the strength of its redevelopment potential (a formal plan for the building’s redevelopment isn’t yet available). The price works out to about $330 a square foot, based on potential building size of 56,160 square feet. The existing two-storey building is about 16,000 square feet, including the basement. Six parties, all local, placed bids on the property, said Lance Coulson, senior vicepresident with CBRE Ltd.’s investment properties group. “I did have some calls from

outside of Canada asking for additional information, and there was interest,” he said. “But when the offers came in, it was the local interest that wanted to move forward.” Coulson said offshore demand has typically focused on residential properties, and when it comes to development sites, they’re interested in larger developments. The small, boutique nature of the Chapman site made it more appealing to locals who saw value in having a piece of a hard-to-get location with redevelopment

potential. Meanwhile, demand for the headquarters of Avigilon Corp. – one of the city’s tech stars – has come from all quarters. Avigilon paid $42 million for 555 Robson Street in early 2015, but at the end of November 2016 announced its intention to sell the property. CBRE senior vice-president Kevin Nelson characterized demand as “tremendous.” “[It’s] attracting interest from a wide range of groups including local, national, US and offshore investors,” Nelson said. “This points to continued strong interest in Vancouver office assets in a market where supply remains constrained.”

The owner of CF Pacific Centre is selling half its Vancouver portfolio to the Ontario Pension Board and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. Cadillac Fairview did not disclose terms of the deal following Friday’s (Jan. 20) announcement. The Ontario Pension Board and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board will each take a 25 per cent stake in the property management company’s Vancouver

assets, including CF Pacific Centre, 200 Granville Square and Waterfront Centre. In total, the deal represents about four million square feet of leasable space. Cadillac Fairview and the Ontario Pension Board are already partners on four properties in downtown Toronto. third most productive mall, with tenants bringing in $1,523 in sales per square foot in the year ended Aug. 31, 2016. Other properties in Cadillac Fairview’s Vancouver portfolio include Canaccord Genuity Place, PricewaterhouseCoopers Place, HSBC Building and TD Tower. tory was won as BC Supreme Court decided that property taxes on sites where greater density is allowed should reflect current use rather than future development. However, on Jan. 13, BC Assessment informed Sullivan that the outcome of the case (known as the Amacon decision) wouldn’t become the norm for other properties. Sullivan, therefore, plans to fight on. “Personally, I am outraged to litigate for three years, spending your money, win the case and to have it ignored as if it never happened,” he told those who funded the fight, including Vancouver business improvement areas, the Urban Development Institute and, of course, Amacon. “What we hope to convince the courts is that properties where there are business enterprise in it should be valued based on their existing use rather than as redevelopment value.” • For more stories like this, go to BIV.com

Westward Ho! is the name of a village in southwestern England. Its name is impressive because of the exclamation point. But it’s not as dramatic as that of the only town on earth with two exclamation points: Saint-Louis-duHa! Ha!, which is in Quebec. I invite you Aries folks to be equally daring. According to my reading of the astrological omens, you have a cosmic mandate and poetic license to cram extra !!!!s into all your writing and speaking, and even add them to the spelling of your name! Why? Because this should be one of the most exciting and ebullient phases of your astrological cycle – a time to risk showing just how enthusiastic and energetic you are!!!!!

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.

The roulette wheels at casinos in Monaco have 37 pockets. Eighteen are black, 18 are red, and one is green. On any particular spin, the ball has just less than half a chance of landing in a red or black pocket. But there was one night back in August of 1913, at the Casino de Monte-Carlo, when probability seemed inoperative. The little white ball kept landing on the black over and over again. Gamblers responded by increasingly placing heavy bets on red numbers. They assumed the weird luck would soon change. But it didn’t until the 27th spin. (The odds of that happening were 136,823,184 to 1.) What does this have to do with you? I suspect you’re in a comparable situation – the equivalent of about 20 spins into an improbable streak. My advice: Don’t bet on the red yet.

Is there a person or event that could heal you if you had a better understanding about how you need to be healed? The coming weeks will be a favourable time to get useful answers to these questions – and then take action based on what you discover.

The next two weeks will be a favourable time to kiss the feet of helpful allies, but not to kiss the butts of clever manipulators. I also advise you to perform acts of generosity for t yu k y k || mu iymv ou zt || zt|i mt not for those who will waste your blessings or treat you like a doormat. In my astrological opinion, you Libras are in a wild cabbage phase of your long-term cycle. In the coming months, you can and should do seminal work that will ultimately generate an abundance of useful derivatives.
