Re:“Rant/Rave”, Jan. 26, 2017 I read with interest your rants of Jan. 26-Feb. 1. Some poor woman is going to stop holding doors for others because people aren’t polite (read: grateful) enough? Nonsense. It’s important to be polite because it’s simply

the right thing to do. And, if you want to achieve an objective, be an example of the behaviour you want. Should I smoke because others do? Should I spit and curse because other people do? Should I call some poor woman a skank over some inconsequential bus change because

The Vancouver Intention: ‘We should totally do brunch!’ Grant Lawrence Vancouver Shakedown

@GrantLawrence

A couple of years ago, I wrote in this very space about a social-planning syndrome that has plagued our city for years, so much so that it has its own name: the BC Bail. That’s when a person makes plans with friends but cancels at the last minute, usually by text message. It’s stressed that the reason for cancelling is something serious, but in reality it could be as lame as glancing away from The Crown for two seconds and noticing it’s raining. Well, guess what, everyone? We’ve managed to take our unwillingness to socialize with each other one notch below the BC Bail. It’s something I call the Vancouver Intention. That’s when you run into friends on the street and eagerly say, “We should totally have you guys over!” or “We really need to sit down and have a drink!” or “We should get together for brunch sometime!” Your friends will respond with equal enthusiasm. “Absolutely! Yes, let’s do it! It’s been way too long, right?” Then both parties go their separate ways and no plans are ever confirmed. This is not to be confused with “ghosting,” because the intention to get together is relatively genuine. But that’s socializing in Vancouver these days: talking about getting together but not actually getting together – which is often good enough for a lot of people. Maybe brunch is the problem. It’s everyone’s favourite meal, which means it’s near impossible to easily go out with a group of people in this town and actually get it. From the Naam in the west, to Red Wagon in the east, to Café Medina in the

Westender.com

middle, the line-ups are like at Disneyland. The intention to go for brunch is there, but really, who wants to bother? Kelsey Klassen, the editor of this very paper, admits that she is “horribly guilty” of the Vancouver Intention. “When I lived in Australia, my ex and I had full on arguments about how rude and insincere this seemed to him, whereas at home it’s a weird version of being polite or friendly.” Soraya Thomas, a friend of mine who’s married with two busy kids, has made a New Year’s resolution to actively fight against the Vancouver Intention. “I want to make a real effort to spend time with the friends I care about this year.” Okay, so forget about brunch on the town, but what about a dinner party at your place? If you live in Kits and your friends live in North Burnaby, that’s practically different time zones, so forget them. But if you can find friends in your neighbourhood, you could always try the Crappy Dinner Party. The “crappy event movement” is something professor Alex Samur has recently embraced. It’s an attempt to make socializing less daunting. Don’t clean up your place. Use the food that’s in your fridge. Call your friends last-minute and invite them over for dinner. Go through your contacts until someone bites, literally. BOOM! You’re actually socializing. The other night, we put Soraya’s resolution to the test. It was Saturday at 5:30pm, and the text went out from our family to theirs: “Do you want to come over for dinner right now?”Three minutes of silence. “Yes! We’re coming!” We all had a blast. Do your part to end the Vancouver Intention and the BC Bail: Make actual plans and stick to them. And if you own a popular brunch spot in this town, do us all a favour and take reservations, for f—k’s sake! W

Downtown’s beloved Railway Club will reopen with a new name and a new lease on life that points to the future while honouring its past, say the new owners of the iconic upstairs venue. Contrary to initial reports, live music and entertainment will still be on tap when the Railway Stage & Beer Café reopens this spring, but so will a “progressive craft beer program.”The renovated space will serve 32 craft beers with a rotating tap program and focus on attracting customers throughout the day rather than relying on nightclub business to pay the bills. “It is a strange and awkward second-level space with nooks and crannies, a small city patio and a back room bar.That’s what we love about it and why we spent so much time there,” Jeff Donnelly wrote via email. “It’s calling to be brought back to life, we’ve hired a young design firm that puts the history of the space first.” The Railway Club got its start in 1932 as a membersonly club for railway workers and became an iconic music venue in the 1980s and ’90s hosting the likes of Radiohead, k.d. lang, Los Lobos, and the Tragically Hip. But over the years, the cozy upstairs hotspot had lost considerable steam, its identity and much of its loyal clientele. Earlier this year, Donnelly and his business partner, Chad Cole, took over the lease of the 84-year-old club, which had been closed since March and its former owners couldn’t find a buyer. Donnelly and crew will also be calling on local musician and “impresario”Thomas Anselmi to “develop the programming vision for The Railway Stage, including cu-

And his music cred goes further back as the former frontman of Copyright and Slow, which infamously ended its career at Expo 86 while performing at the fair’s Festival of Independent Recording Artists. Anselmi reportedly mooned the audience after organizers cut the show short and a mini-riot ensued. Donnelly said having Anselmi on board is a good fit for the club’s new vision. “Andi Akhavan our head of programming and talent has worked with Thomas in the past at Arrival Agency. Not only was he a cultural fit but he had a lot of passion for this particular project since we first started talking with him. He chose to work with us as much as we chose to

work with him.” While exact details of the club’s live entertainment offerings are still being worked out, according to a press release Dino Archie’s popular comedy night and Joe Rotundo’s “Saturday Sessions” will return. No word yet on the crowd-favourite Hardrock Miners’ monthly Monday night singalong. As for the club’s train set, which hung from the ceiling and wound its way around the venue, delighting many a drunken onlooker, there had been rumours online that the trains had been sold and the set permanently derailed. Not so, according to Donnelly. “The trains have not been sold, the track hasn’t worked for some years and unfortunately a lot of the cars were stolen over the years. As a team we think the train should be represented somehow in the new space.” Still, this being Vancouver, news of the Railway Club’s resurrection wouldn’t be complete without a little online

snarkiness and worries that the new venue will lose some of its soul. However, Donnelly takes it all in stride. “We can’t pay too much attention to snarky comments, most people think we’re a faceless corporation of executives making decisions in boardrooms.That’s just not the case.We’re a small independent company that started here in Vancouver,” said Donnelly. “Trevor Kallies, Alvin Pillay and David Gunawan partner on our products, Evoke Design, St. Marie and others partner on our rooms, Andi Akhavan and now Thomas Anselmi partner on our entertainment, we have an incredible team culturally. It’s myself and my partners living/ breathing these rooms every day.We always take people’s comments into consideration if they’re informed about our company, at The Railway, we’re going to put all our effort into our trade and let the product speak for itself.” • Story courtesy of the Vancouver Courier

Home is Where the Art is: Jesse Nightingale of Handsome Mountain Pet Supplies Jennifer Scott A Good Chick to Know

@Jennifer_AGCTK

When designing the perfect space, it’s essential to remember the practical role of décor: who will be using the room, and how? Some of the most overlooked details are the needs of our four-legged family members. Even the most perfectly styled room can be easily disrupted by a typical bed for Fido. Jesse Nightingale, founder of local brand Handsome Mountain, has created a line of pet beds and accessories that is so chic, you may want to bring some of her wares into your home whether you have a fur-baby or not. For instance, one of her beautiful beds can double as a super-stylish floor pillow. Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Jesse Nightingale and I’m the founder of Handsome Mountain Pet Supplies.The company was created shortly after I adopted by beloved dog, Beaumont, from the SPCA in Kelowna. It was on the drive back home that I named him and, ultimately, my brand, Beaumont. Quick translation: Beau = Handsome + mont = Mountain. Et voilà! Weaving my design skills from being a fashion designer and a textile-arts graduate together with my love for animals, I starting dreaming up [Beaumont’s] perfect pet bed. I decided to develop the brand to share with others what I felt was missing in the pet industry: high-quality, well-designed and all-aroundfun pet accessories. Looking back, the decision to follow my passion was life-changing. No other words can describe it. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

How would you describe Vancouver’s creative community? I absolutely love it! There are always things to attend, and people doing amazing things.The more people you get to know, the more you hear about and can discover.

the dog beaches in the summer and catching those sweet sunsets.That’s the beauty of this city:We have it all!

Do you collect anything? I’ve actually started collecting small vintage dog figurines, and dog-related décor items that are really original and not cheesy, that keep the studio looking fun by adding these elements of pets all around.

It allows for me to not have to commute to work, and I quite love the big windows and light that I get in there. If you could speak to a room of youth who were considering a career in the arts, what would your advice be? I would definitely ask them if they think they could get up in the mornings and get to work without their alarm or parents having to wake them up. I would obviously highly recommend that they follow their passion in the arts, and to know that it may be a bit of a struggle at first to reach their goals, but to never stop trying and to never stop creating. It’s really difficult to buy perfume as a gift. One of the ways you can get it wrong is to go for this year’s biggest designer scent – usually whatever’s being heavily promoted

at department stores.There are two problems with this: One, your partner will end up smelling like all her friends and colleagues, and she probably doesn’t want that; and two, many of these perfumes are generic, synthetic, too sweet, and/or bland. You can’t go far wrong with mainstream brands like Chanel, Hermès and Guer-

lain, which always manage to produce original and beautiful scents. Another option is to buy from independent and artisan producers; they often work with noses who are given no restrictions, so they have free rein to execute their most creative ideas.What they produce might not be to everyone’s taste (I recall a peculiar but kind of amazing

Serge Lutens scent that smells like antiseptic), but it won’t be typical, and it might just blow her mind. Niche brands can be hard to find in Vancouver, though. Some can be sniffed out at department stores and luxury boutiques, or at the Perfume Shoppe (757 W. Hastings), which has a great selection. Many are available online only, but you can order samples – free or for a small fee – so you’re able to try before you commit. Here are some of my recent favourites. Serge Lutens L’Incendiare (€450 at SergeLutens.com) A light but smoky scent, in the French designer’s typically contradictory style. If it’s out of your budget, visit the Perfume Shoppe, which has a good selection of Lutens fragrances around the $150 mark. Comme des Garçons Blackpepper ($145 at Neighbour) and Grace ($145 at Nordstrom) I couldn’t choose between the two scents from this Japanese avant-garde designer, so I didn’t. First, there’s the spicy, woody Blackpepper; second, there’s the rose-based Grace, which was created with legendary stylist Grace Coddington. Maison Francis Kurdjian Aqua Celestia (US$205 at FrancisKurkdjian.com) The latest from this perfumer/olfactory artist has his signature clean aesthetic, with fresh mint, lime and blackcurrant notes.

From left: 7 Virtues Lisa Ray, Comme des Garçons Blackpepper and Grace, The Different Company, and Serge Lutens. 7 Virtues Lisa Ray Jasmine of India ($70 at Hudson’s Bay) Created in conjunction with model/activist Lisa Ray, this has notes of orange blossom, cardamom and jasmine flower. Ingredients are sourced from India, from farmers who are paid a living wage.This is in line with the Canadian brand’s philosophy of ethical sourcing from troubled and impoverished regions.

Le Labo Thé Noir 29 ($245, at Nordstrom) An ode to our favourite drink, this has notes of black tea, bergamot, fig and bay leaves, with a tobacco-ey note in the drydown. Sensuous, but fresh, and absolutely lovely.

Byredo Rose of No Man’s Land ($200 at Holt Renfrew) The packaging and fragrances from this Swedish brand are equally simple yet luxurious.This one hasTurkish rose, pink pepper and white amber, to add sophistication.

Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 ($149.99 at Goodge Place) Scentless in the bottle, this reacts differently to everyone’s skin and has a single note, Iso E Super, known for its pheromone-like qualities. The unisex fragrance has been described as woody, clean, musky, powdery, floral, peppery and lemony – so, basically, no one can agree.

CB I Hate Perfume Invisible Monster (US$110 at CBIHatePerfume.com) US perfumer Christopher Brosius’s philosophy is that perfume is not an accessory, but the main event – art, not beauty.This scent is inspired by an episode of 1960s cartoon Jonny Quest, and has notes of ToYo Ran orchid, sumac, oakmoss and cedar.

The Different Company Sublime Balkiss (€101 at TheDifferentCompany.com) The twin inspirations for perfumer Celine Ellena’s beautiful chypre were 1940s Hollywood glamour and Ireland’s sweet rains.The result is floral – heavy on the violet, with notes of rose, lilac and heather – with the warmth of patchouli. WINE & DINING OUT

Chain restaurants upping their wine game Michaela Morris By the Bottle

@MichaelaWine

Vancouver is a breeding ground for “casual fine dining” chains. Most notably, Cactus Club Cafe, Joey and Earls started on the West Coast, and are now established in multiple provinces across Canada. The latter two also have locations in the US. All three have distinguished themselves from other chains with a serious commitment to their wine program, attracting some of Vancouver’s finest sommeliers in the process. Cactus Club upped the food ante when it brought in Rob Feenie as executive chef in 2008, and aimed just as high for wine when it hired Sebastien Le Goff as Sommelier and Service Director in 2011. Le Goff has an impressive resumé, including tenures at CinCin Ristorante + Bar, Lumière and Cibo Trattoria, as well as fine-dining restaurants in Toronto and Asia. He was named Sommelier of the Year in 2006. Part of improving Cactus’s wine program meant making the list easier for guests and staff to navigate. He and colleague Sam Zavari organize it by the wines’ body rather than by price or region, which is the traditional approach. Le Goff also decreased the total number of wines, yet expanded offerings by the glass “to match as many of our customers’ tastes as possible,” he says. Joey Restaurant Group followed Cactus’s lead in 2016 by snapping up 2015 BC Sommelier of the Year Jason Yamasaki, formerly of Chambar. His criteria requires a wine to be delicious, of course, but it also has to provide value and match the food, vibe and ethos of Joey. For the classics, such as Chablis and Chianti, Yamasaki describes them as “exceptional benchmarks that we are proud to carry across the country.” Like Le Goff, he also looks at

Westender.com

the particular region a Joey location is in – for instance, BC wines in BC and Ontario wines in Ontario. At Earls, Vancouver’s original upscale chain, wine has long been an important focus. Under the direction of George Piper, the group established its own brand, Mon Ami Rascal, and forged long-term relationships with great producers around the world to secure wines at a good price. Recently, Earls introduced Torr Keg, a locally developed tap system, for all its wines by the glass. And, as of February, it has sommelier David Stansfield overseeing all locations. Stansfield is formerly of Tap & Barrel, where he ran the wine program since it opened five years ago. The list is 100-per-cent BC wines on tap, with many single barrels or exclusive lots that Stansfield sourced for the restaurant. In terms of the move to Earls, Stansfield is thrilled. “They’ve been a leader with their wine service in the style of restaurant they are,” he says. “I’m excited not to throw that out.” He intends to take what he learned with BC wine at Tap & Barrel and apply it at Earls, giving a local flare to each location. As talented as Le Goff, Yamasaki and Stansfield are, obviously they cannot be physically present to sell every bottle or glass. Each has his own unique way of providing wine training to ensure staff is comfortable talking about wine to guests. “Creating wine culture is one of the most challenging things across a restaurant group,” admits Stansfield. “But it’s not impossible.You do it by finding the people for whom this is a passion and foster that.” For Le Goff, this means working alongside them, and he continues to serve on the floor daily. “I love interacting with guests and getting their feedback firsthand about our service, wine selection and food,” he enthuses. “Being on the front lines is very crucial to my job.” W

How Vancouver changed dining out, locally and beyond Anya Levykh Nosh

@FoodgirlFriday

Thirty years ago, if a typical Vancouver family decided to go out for dinner, it more or less had one of three choices: a fine-dining establishment, White Spot, or a diner/fastfood outlet.The disparity was glaring, and wanting a glass of wine with dinner meant the mandatory donning of a suit and tie or stockings and heels, as it was usually only the high-end establishments that were licensed. Then, in 1983, Earls opened in North Vancouver with its casual burger-andbeer concept. By 1987, it had expanded that concept to include dishes based on the owners’ travels around the world. It was a licensed restaurant that offered goodquality food without white tablecloths and tableside service, and customers flocked. “‘Casual fine dining’ didn’t exist back then,” says Mo Jessa, president of the Earls restaurant group. “You had to make the choice between fast food and fine service. In the ’80s, when we got into that niche segment of high quality at casual prices, nothing [like Earls] existed.” By 1988, when Cactus Club Cafe opened its first location, also in North Vancouver, the concept of “upscale casual” sounded a revolutionary boom.The idea that people could go out for a nice dinner with a few drinks and not beggar themselves to do it was unprecedented, and it quickly became popular.

Other chains – Joey, Moxie’s, et al – soon followed, and the “casual fine dining” concept was born. Within a decade, the concept resulted in multiple independent restaurants mushrooming across Greater Vancouver, each proclaiming its adherence to well-aboveaverage food and drink in a relaxed atmosphere and for reasonable prices. The locavore/sustainable/fair-trade/ ethically-sourced mantra was championed by these small independents, which in turn inspired the chains to start focusing on the same ideas. “We depend on [independent restaurants],” acknowledges Jessa. “They make a city vibrant. And they inspire us, rather than the other way around. They’re able to quickly adapt and address customers’ changing needs faster than a chain can.” Jessa also notes the struggle that smaller, independent operators face: “It’s mostly a function of real estate costs. When prices get high, small businesses get marginalized.” These days, that struggle also involves the lack of skilled labour, especially when it comes to the “back of house” staff behind the kitchen doors. Here again, chains have an advantage over the independents. Earls, among others, pays for its employees’ Red Seal certification, a national program that trains people in skilled trades to a recognized standard of excellence. At Earls, leadership training is given to anyone who wants it, no matter where in the restaurant he or she works. “We want people to leave better

than when they start with us,” says Jessa. Richard Jaffray, owner of the Cactus Club Cafe group of restaurants, agrees. “We offer the Red Seal certification to our employees, and they also have inspiration from working with people like Rob [Feenie, Executive Chef] and Sebastien [Le Goff, Service Director and Sommelier].” Inspiration seems to be a draw at many chains. Joey Restaurants’ award-winning executive chef, Chris Mills, has been invited to cook at the none-more-prestigious James Beard House in New York several times. Earls has created the “chef collective” to harness the ideas of superstar chefs such as Hamid Salimian, Brian Skinner and David Wong, among others. At Cactus Club, Rob Feenie works with acclaimed pastry chef Wendy Boys. Even Browns Socialhouse recently lured away former Hawksworth luminary Kristian Eligh to join a triumvirate of chefs who plan to overhaul the menu and concept. The goal, according to Jessa, is to create that unique experience that brings back the customer on a regular basis. “Our battleground is ideas,” he says, “and that’s where our chef’s collective comes in. It’s all about quality, but still approachable.” Jaffray agrees, describing the experience at his restaurants as broader than just casual fine dining. “We offer fine-dining-quality food within an unpretentious, fun and vibrant atmosphere. That experience is an important part of what makes the restaurants so successful.”

As is paying attention to who those customers are. “Today’s target demographic is much broader than it was in 1988, and it also depends on the location of the restaurant,” explains Jaffray. “One of the things that has remained consistent is that every community that we open up in brings in a different type of guest. For example, our Toronto location is right in the heart of the financial district, which naturally draws a business crowd Monday to Friday. However, on the weekends at the same location, it brings out a young, urban-professional, social clientele, which is similar to locations such as Yaletown and English Bay.” And while the menus have evolved over the decades, the concept of fine-dining-calibre meals in a casual atmosphere is one that is now firmly rooted in the collective dining consciousness, to the extent that actual fine dining is now limited to little more than a handful of restaurants in the city. In fact, the concept has gone even further, to the creation of fast-casual restaurants that follow a cafeteria format while delivering more than just burgers. From panAsian rice bowls or bao to organic salads and sandwiches, the city is now teeming with fast-service, slow-food establishments. Many may gripe about chain restaurants and the impact they have on independent operators, but, love ’em or hate ’em, they seem to have done a fair amount of good for this city’s food scene – and many other cities, too. Brewmaster Gary Lohin, left, and head distiller Stuart McKinnon are the creators of Central City Brewers + Distiller’s new Lohin McKinnon single malt whisky. Central City Brewers + Distillers

BC distilleries strive to produce world-class whisky Joanne Sasvari The Alchemist

@TheAlchemistBC Ever since the first drops of elixir trickled from a local craft still more than a decade ago, whisky lovers have been waiting to taste a true madein-BC single malt. And now, we can. Last week, Surrey’s Central City Brewers + Distillers launched its Lohin McKinnon single malt whisky, joining a handful of small-batch BC distilleries that are producing the water of life (and even more that have whisky quietly aging in barrels). “It’s really a wonderful whisky,” says Davin de Kergommeaux, whisky historian and author of the book CanadianWhisky:The Portable Expert. “This is not cowboy whisky. This is whisky that is mature and balanced.” Lohin McKinnon single malt is a light, easy-drinking whisky that is enjoyable on its own, but versatile enough for cocktails: pale straw in colour, with a delicate balance of grain and fruit, mostly vanilla but with a hint of soft spice, and a smooth mouthfeel. It has a surprising depth for a spirit that was in the barrel

of whisky, trying a variety of malts and barrel finishes, and even a heavily peated whisky. “I think we have 15 different barrels – mostly Tennessee whisky and bourbon barrels, but also sherry and fortified wines,” says McKinnon. “We’re up to 1,200 barrels, and every year is a little bigger production.” So far, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. “We get a lot of people who are surprised,” says Lohin. “That it’s from BC is a surprise, and that it’s only three years old is a surprise.” All of this is just want de Kergommeaux likes to see. “Why would we make malted whisky in Canada when the Scots already perfected it? Because we can do it our way,” he says. “We make fabulous whisky here in Canada.” As Lohin says, “We’re trying to put some excitement in the Canadian whisky business. I think BC is going to lead the way in Canada. It’s taking off in the way craft beer did.” Central City’s Lohin McKinnon single malt whisky is available for a suggested price of $59.99 at BC Liquor Stores, private retailers, and the distillery in Surrey. for only three years. Although Central City is best known for its award-winning beers, making spirits – especially whisky – was always part of the plan, says brewmaster Gary Lohin, whose name, along with that of head distiller Stuart McKinnon, adorns the bottle. “I could see what was happening in the US and I saw [spirits] as the next wave,” he says. The distillery has already proved successful with its vodka and gin, but whisky takes time – a minimum of three years’ aging in barrels – and money, too: Those shiny copper Holstein stills don’t come cheap, and neither do the barrels, let alone the cost of storing them. “We think each barrel is retailing for 15 grand, and then it’s tied up [with aging] for three years before you can sell anything,” says Lohin. While other regions in North America are exploring rye and corn whiskies, BC’s distillers are focusing on barley. The Lohin McKinnon single malt, for instance, is made from 100 per cent Canadian barley, mostly from Alberta, with a few promising barrels of BC malt tucked away. Lohin and McKinnon are also experimenting with different styles

CRAFT BEER

BC craft beer industry fights the good fight Welcome to Painsville, population: Me. Robert Mangelsdorf The Growler

@TheGrowlerBC Oh, dear God, what have I gotten myself into? That’s what went through my head as I listened to boxing coach Dave Schuck explain the world of pain I was about to enter. He didn’t mince words about the grueling training regime I had flippantly signed up for. “It’s going to be tough, you are going to be in a lot of pain, and some of you aren’t going to make it.” Gulp. For the second year in a row, the craft beer industry and the Eastside Boxing Club in Chinatown are teaming up to help raise funds for the free community programs the gym offers. It’s called Beer Wars, and stupidly, I volunteered to be one of the sacrificial lambs. Have you heard of Aprons for Gloves? It’s the same thing, but with beer nerds instead of bartenders and baristas. So how it works is, each brewery gets to send a fighter, Schuck and his staff will abuse train us three days a week for three months, and the lucky ones who survive will get to beat the crap out of each other at the main event at the end of April. The proceeds from the event will help support the non-profit boxing club’s free community programs, many of which focus on supporting youth and women in the Downtown Eastside. “Our afterschool kids program provides free training and food for kids at risk from the ages of 11 to 19,” says Schuck. “We also have a group of young adults in

transition from hospice, and self-defence class for women in the Downtown Eastside. “We’ve got kids who’ve been here for the last year, and they’ve seen improvements in their grades and their health, of course. A lot of kids, the only healthy meal they get is when they come here.” A noble cause, for sure. The event raised close to $30,000 last year, which has undoubtedly done considerable good for the Downtown Eastside community. I’m representing Main Street Brewing Co., and they would be wise to bet against me at this point. I’ve hit a bag before, I’ve done a few “boxercise” classes here and there, but I’m coming into this with basically no idea what I’m doing. Thankfully, I’m not alone. In all, about 60 people from the craft beer industry are taking part, around two thirds of them women. I am very thankful I’m not fighting in their division, because just about every single one of them would mercilessly beat me to a pulp. Lots of Tough Mudder and triathlon T-shirts. They are fit, prepared, and this isn’t their first rodeo. The dudes on the other hand? We’re looking preeetty soft, I gotta say. (I’m probably going to get pummeled for saying that, but that was bound to happen anyway.) It should be noted that I am the undisputed King of Soft. I’m literally the squishiest person there, as well as the sweatiest. My apologies to whoever has to mop the floors at Eastside. The average 90-minute training session involves Schuck hurling abuse and running us ragged. He made it very clear that he has a “three strikes” rule when it comes to crying. Thankfully, no such rule applies to puking, which I’ve come very close to doing pretty much every class. But to Schuck’s credit,

he’s an equal-opportunity sadist. Everyone gets their fair share of abuse. After all, it’s his job to get us fight-ready in just three months, so he’s really got his work cut out for him. Schuck runs a tight ship, but what it boils down to is this: Do what he says, work hard, and no whining. And whatever you do, don’t show

up late, or you’ll be sweeping the gym (I found that one out the hard way). It’s a long road to the main event, and I’m only two weeks into the training. It’s still not a given I’ll even be picked for the fight night (or if I’ll even survive that long). I’m currently going through Epsom salts by the metric ton and I’m popping ibupro-

fen like they’re Tic Tacs. I live in a world of pain. The main event takes place April 29 at the Croatian Cultural Centre, and all of the breweries fielding fighters will also be pouring, so the craft beer selection is guaranteed to be on point. “You’re going to see people who have been training really, really hard for three

months, and they are letting it all go and letting the fists fly,” says Schuck. “All their friends are there, so they are swinging for the fences.” So keep an eye out for Rob “The Human Punching Bag” Mangelsdorf. Has a nice ring to it. • Follow BC BeerWars on Instagram at @BCBeerWars W

THEATRE

Shadow-puppetry masterpiece comes to the Chan KELSEY KLASSEN @kelseyklassen

If you still think shadow puppetry consists solely of nimble fingers and paper figures on Popsicle sticks, it’s time to let your imagination grow up. At the hands of companies like Chicago-based puppetry wizards Manual Cinema, the art form has fully matured to encompass complex, featurelength storytelling, live music and technically sophisticated cinematic elements such as live actors and surround sound. In fact, those are the building blocks of a critically acclaimed Manual Cinema show, making it’s one-nightonly debut in Vancouver on Feb. 7 as part of the Chan Centre’s Beyond Words storytelling series. Entitled Ada/Ava, the show follows two septuagenarian twins through melancholy New England in a haunting, gothic journey of grief, death and family ties. Hailed as an “unclassifiable story of spectral beauty” by the NewYork Times, and with more than 20 such shows under their belts, we

identical – like, read them as twins – already, before you put any dialogue or text on it, you’re telling a story. There’s already a little hint of character or story there. So, we think of it in terms of: there’s some things the medium does well, and some things the medium doesn’t do well. If you can land on a story where it feels like the medium is working with you, then 50 per cent of the job is already taken care of.

caught up with co-artistic director Drew Dir to discuss the making of two-dimensional magic. In your experience, what do adults react to? What kind of things really work on a more mature audience? It’s been a process of us learning what’s interesting about this work and how people view it, because we’ve been learning about the medium at the same time as our audience. In general, because we’re making shows that don’t have any dialogue or narration or text – they’re told purely through image and music – already we’re dealing with a set of restrictions on the kind of story we can tell. So, often times we chose very simple stories, like, one or two characters just following their journey. But through that simple story, we try to make the way we tell it super complex and super cinematic. I think what people are drawn to in our work is that, like, everyone grows up watching cinema and watching films, and everyone is really fluent in cinematic language. To see that cin-

Manual Cinema’s ‘Ada/Ava’ will be in Vancouver for one night only, Feb. 7. Contributed photo ematic language recreated in a very analogue, handmade, manual way is, I think, really gratifying to people. Because they’re recognizing something familiar, but it’s presented to them in a totally strange, new context. What is the back bone of a good puppet story? Even for

a simple one- or two-character journey like this? They need to be stories that read well in shadow. To take Ada/Ava, as an example – that show started with the idea of telling a story about a set of twin sisters, because we realized that if you put two actors behind a screen and you make them look

In what ways does shadow puppetry work against you? Depth? Facial expression? A lot of it is that; because there’s so little information, the audience loses access to the face, they lose access to text and words. We want to tell the audience how this character is feeling and on paper, when we plot it out, it looks great and the story is super compelling, but when we stage it in the medium you can discover that the story isn’t coming across at all, or not clearly enough. We experience that almost every day when we’re staging our stuff. A lot of the rehearsal process is us failing at telling a story and

us listening to the medium, telling us what kind of story it wants to say. Is using people – actors – with wigs and prosthetics on their face a form of ‘cheating’ in the puppetry world? [Laughs] I worry about that all the time. I think it gets to something about our work which is that it’s not pure puppetry. I feel conscious of that when we’re around puppetry people. We’re using a lot of different tools in our work because it is multidisciplinary. A large part of it clearly is puppetry, at the same time we’re also using a cinematic language to tell a story, which is really more film than it is puppetry, and we’re also using music to tell a lot of the story. There are a lot of different vectors of storytelling that are coming together, and only one of those vectors is puppetry. W

Introducing seed. Vancouver is one of the greenest, most livable cities in the world. Our population is growing and so is demand for energy. In fact, demand for electricity in Vancouver is expected to grow by 75% over the next 30 years. We can provide the clean renewable power that Vancouver needs, but our substations serving downtown Vancouver are aging and need to be upgraded or replaced. Our usual way of doing things would be to find and buy a piece of land and build a substation on it. But that means putting a substation on land that could otherwise be used for housing, businesses, schools, or parks. A substation that neighbours would always see.

A better idea? Instead, what if we used money and land more wisely and built two new electricity substations below ground, while using the space above them for new schools, new daycare spaces and improved parks.

There are several ways for you to get involved:

THEATRE & FILM

Non-binary child actor considered for male and female Leo Award Short film about a gender-fluid child premieres Feb. 5 in Portland, Ore.

Aryo Khakpour and Milton Lim star in the immersive multimedia production, ‘Foreign Radical.’ Contributed photo

Two-year-old ‘Foreign Radical’ more timely than ever SABRINA FURMINGER @sabrinamf

It can be difficult to pin a label on Foreign Radical. Even the well-crafted press release doesn’t quite answer the question: What is it, exactly? “I’ve been asked to describe it numerous times, and it’s like, ‘Well, it’s a dramatic documentary installation multimedia theatre experience that’s participatory,’” says Tim Carlson, artistic producer of Vancouver’s Theatre Conspiracy and writer and co-director (with Jeremy Waller) of Foreign Radical. The elaborate production resurfaces in Vancouver this month after a successful run in 2015, during which it won a Jessie Award for Critics’ Choice Innovation and earned its place on several best-intheatre lists. Foreign Radical is a means to many different ends. It’s an interactive multimedia theatrical game – with multilingual elements in Farsi and Arabic – that explores

security, profiling, freedom of expression, and privacy in the age of cyber-surveillance. Each performance is unique in that the audience dynamic influences the outcome. In 2017’s fraught and ever-evolving geo-political landscape, Foreign Radical is especially poignant. “Unfortunately, and ironically, it seems to be the case that the show just keeps getting more relevant all the time,” says Carlson. “Best-case scenario: it would become irrelevant. But we’re speaking on a day where the new administration in the US is talking about bringing back things like black sites.That was the worst of the worst of post-9/11 reaction, so the stakes seem to be getting higher all the time.” The Foreign Radical experience is immersive. The theatre space at Studio 1398 is divided into four quadrants. The audience of 30 is on its feet the entire time, and “depending on your personal opinions or your choices in various game-play elements, you might see dramatic

scenes from different perspectives than the rest of the audience, and, therefore, that might skew your opinion of what’s happening,” Carlson explains. There are opportunities to debate and trade opinion, and as the show progresses, it becomes more about the social dynamic and collective opinion of that particular group. “It really is quite different show to show, and it’s fascinating to see that happen.” Foreign Radical has changed somewhat since its critically acclaimed freshman run in 2015. “We took out some video and made more opportunities that are more tactile, where the audience is dealing with props and that kind of thing, rather than sitting back and watching documentary video,” says Carlson. “There still is some documentary video out there. But as we move forward, we want to make it more and more about the personal, the hand-to-hand experience, and less about watching media.”

The physicality of Foreign Radical means that participants who are having a difficult time with the current political climate might experience something akin to catharsis, says Carlson. “When people get in close proximity and get to know each other a little bit over the course of 75 minutes, it opens up empathy and a willingness to listen to each other that maybe wouldn’t happen online or elsewhere in a really politically polarized society, and that’s one thing that theatre can do that maybe doesn’t happen with television or with film documentary to the same degree.” W • Foreign Radical runs Feb. 7-11 at Studio 1398 on Granville Island. Two performances nightly. There is no seating, but the production is wheelchair accessible. The Feb. 11 matinee will have an ASL interpreter. Tickets and info at Conspiracy.ca

Review: McConaughey strikes it rich THOR DIAKOW @thordiakow

GOLD

Starring Matthew McConaughey, Édgar Ramírez Directed by Stephen Gaghan A struggling prospector, desperate for a lucky break, looks to strike it rich in Gold. Down on his luck businessman Kenny Wells (McConaughey) teams up with renowned geologist Michael Acosta (Ramírez) and embarks on a tropical adventure

in Borneo to search for a massive gold deposit. After Wells suffers a particularly nasty bout of malaria and the local miners walk off the job, things seem fairly dismal until some precious ore is finally discovered. At this point, the story shifts gears and moves to the boardrooms of Wall Street as the pair must now navigate an urban jungle where mosquitoes have been replaced by bloodsucking executives. You won’t hear any direct references but the movie is

based – very loosely – on the events surrounding the mining scandal involving Calgary’s Bre-X in 1993. McConaughey enjoyed weeks of burgers and beer to gain a significant amount of weight and, sporting a bald look as well, transformed physically once again for an iconic role. The results are often stunning; the actor’s sheer magnetism is infectious to watch as he utilizes all the tools in his acting arsenal. The Oscar winner also has tremendous support

from the uber-cool Ramírez and Bryce Dallas Howard (playing his wife) providing a poignant emotional anchor. Though the film features several plot twists it generally treads familiar territory and the script, from director Stephen Gaghan (Syriana), Patrick Massett, and John Zinman could have used some polish. Gold isn’t quite up to snuff but does provide another vehicle for McConaughey’s considerable talents. W

FILM & TV

Genre-hopping actress shakes her funny bone in polyamory sitcom Sabrina Furminger Reel People

@Sabrinarmf

Jennifer Spence loves to work on projects that get people talking, and the Vancouver actress’s latest series, the TV comedy You Me Her, has given audiences plenty to talk about. You Me Her premiered at South by Southwest in 2016 and returns for its second season on Valentine’s Day. The locally shot series stars Greg Poehler and Rachel Blanchard as Jack and Emma, a married couple who embark on a polyamorous relationship with a 20-something escort named Izzy (portrayed by Priscilla Faia). Spence plays Carmen, Emma’s best friend. Spence, whose lengthy filmography includes scenestealing roles on Continuum, The Killing, SGU Stargate

Universe and Travelers, and a Leo Award-winning turn as a timid painter in 2013’s Down River (directed by her husband, filmmaker and actor Ben Ratner), relishes the fact that You Me Her casts a light on polyamory, a relationship practice in which individuals have more than one partner with the knowledge and consent of all involved. “You might talk about polyamory with friends or you might talk about it in hushed conversations, but it’s not really something that people are that open about in general,” says Spence. How You Me Her sets itself apart from the bulk of other series that attempt social commentary is that it’s also surprisingly funny, says Spence. “It’s not done in a heavy-handed way. There’s a lot of humour and lightness.” As the best friend to one of the polyamorous pro-

tagonists, Spence’s Carmen is “the voice of reason, even if that reason is delivered in a crass kind of way,” she chuckles. Carmen is happily married with two kids, and “watching her best friend go into this with her husband and another woman is somewhat threatening to their friendship, in a sense, and that’s one of the things that the show talks about, is how alienating it can be for the trio, or however many there are in the relationship. Friendships erode. Other relationships in your life can fall away. “There’s a lot packed into that one show, and I love it.” The second season of You Me Her finds Jack, Emma and Izzy ramping up their relationship, and Carmen navigating through everything the trio’s unconventional relationship brings up for her. “The situation that her good friends are in has sparked some things in Car-

men that she has to look at and figure out how to move through in order to still be happy,” says Spence. Spence’s journey to the BC screen scene began in Toronto. She was a stereotypical teenager, she says (“I filled journal after journal with angst-ridden boredom, which was kind of my goody-two-shoes version of rebellion”), imagining herself pursuing any number of careers, including marine biologist, lawyer, pilot and vet. It wasn’t until her final year in high school, when she was cast in a community theatre production of The Crucible, that she found her calling. “I just kind of realized, ‘I don’t want to do anything else but act.’” She uncovered her specific passion for film and TV while an acting student at the venerable National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal. “There’s that intimacy and that realism to film and television.You can’t lie.You can’t get away with anything. And I especially love the medium of TV, because it allows you to go on a tremendous journey with a character, hopefully over many seasons.” Spence has embarked on several such tremendous journeys since moving to Vancouver in the early 2000s, including her role as police-cyber-specialistturned-spy Betty Robertson on the sci-fi crime procedural Continuum (“Betty was really liberating, because she was so much ballsier than I am”), and, before that, as Dr. Lisa Park on SGU Stargate Universe. The SGU gig was “where I really cut my teeth as an actor, because that was the most I had ever been on set, and that was the most I’d

‘You Me Her’ star Jennifer Spence. Dennys Ilic photo had to sustain a character over an extended period of time,” says Spence, who reunited in 2016 with SGU showrunner Brad Wright on his new series, Travelers. Travelers stars Eric McCormack (Will & Grace) as the leader of a team of timetravellers attempting to save humanity from a terrible fate. Spence plays Grace Day, a high school counselor and tech programmer. Wright “knows how to make a good show,” says Spence. “It was a wonderful experience to come back and to play a character that was so different than the

character I played on Stargate Universe.Yes, the person is still kind of a tech person, but that’s the only overlap. There was a lot of new, fun stuff to do.” You Me Her returns to Audience Network for its second season on Feb. 14. Ask Mish: Has my best friend betrayed my trust? Sex with Mish Way

@MyszkaWay

I’m a woman and I need help! I made friends with his girl a few years ago. We hit it off right away, like that immediate friend-crush thing, and we quickly became best pals. We spent every day together and confided in one another with every aspect of our lives. I opened up to her, which is not an easy thing for me, and trusted her with all my heart. I thought she did the same with me. I had to go away for work for about three months to Calgary, and we kept in touch, but I was not in Vancouver with her. While I was away, we continued to text and talk, but obviously our closeness changed a bit, because it wasn’t face-to-face and hanging out. When I got back to Vancouver, I found out that she started dating my ex-boyfriend. They are now moved in together and a “thing.” I went out with this guy for a few years, and even though we broke up before I met his girl, it really bothers me that she didn’t even tell me what was going on. Now things are tense between us on my end, but she seems fine. I don’t know how to let this go, or if I really can. It pisses me off that she was not honest with me and I had to find out through the grapevine of our friend circle. How do I talk to her about this? How can I remain friends with her? I’m angry and I don’t want to be. I don’t love my ex anymore or anything, but it’s the dishonesty that makes me feel as though I can’t trust her anymore. What should I do? I completely understand your anger and, without a doubt, it is justified. However, whether you want to

hold onto that anger and let it ruin your friendship is your call. When I was in my midtwenties, I started dating a friend of mine who was also friends with my ex. Even though my ex and I were well over, we had been together for a long time. The new guy I started dating decided that he needed to call up my ex and let him know that we were seeing one another. I

“There is a reason you and he broke up: You didn’t want to be with one another anymore. So, does it really matter who he finds happiness with? ” –MishWay was kind of blown away at how direct and honest he was. He just called up my ex, told him he wanted the news to come from him and not another friend, and they put the issue to rest. I don’t think their friendship was ever the same, or that close to begin with, but I think ex-boyfriend respected the honesty. It was a very mature and respectful thing to do. Perhaps your friend wanted to wait until you got back into town before she told you what was happening. Maybe she had a plan to sit you down, face-to-face, friendto-friend, and be the bearer of awkward news. Gossip could have wedged in the way of this. People talk, and those people talked enough that the news of your friend and your ex got back to you before she could tell you. On the other hand, she

could be a coward who had no plan of telling you.You won’t know unless you just ask her. I think you should meet up with your pal and just talk it out. No one ever destroyed a relationship by talking. This is the only way to get past the big shit that bugs you. I wish people would be more inclined to just hash it out mug-to-mug. Body language and presence are so important.You can’t see her emotions through a text conversation. Forgiveness is going to be your call, and whether she even apologies for this new relationship is up in the air. Again, you have to just talk to her. I would like to believe that she didn’t do this to spite you, but she just happened to have a spark with your ex-boyfriend that she wanted to get some more of. There is a reason you and he broke up:You didn’t want to be with one another anymore. So, does it really matter who he finds happiness with? It’s going to be annoying, strange, stomach-churning and weird to see them together, but you’ll get over it. Without speaking to her, you won’t; you’ll harbour all your anger until it finally explodes in a rage. And no one looks cute in a rage. Talk to your friend. If you were meant to be friends, you will be. Talking solves everything. Open up that snake jaw and get down to business. W

Mica, a blind, seven-year-old Dachshund, has been waiting for his forever home since March 2016. Megan Posnikoff/Of Earth and Soul Photography

Adopteez: Mica NOA NICHOL @adopteezpleez

Blind and unable to walk, seven-year-old Mica was transported from a First Nations reserve in Bella Coola, BC, to Vancouver by Dhana Metta Rescue Society, where he received critical surgery to repair his hind-end paralysis. “Mica is doing great after his procedure in March,” says Yuana, the rescue’s founder and director (who asked that her last name not be used). “He is walking well and working on his strength to run again. But he cannot do stairs, so he’s looking for a home that either doesn’t have them or where someone is absolutely willing and committed to helping him up and down.” He is, she adds, completely “house broken and does not need to have his bladder expressed. Handily enough, he’s vocal around needing to go,

and he’ll let you know when it’s time.” This despite being visually impaired – a condition that will affect the little Dachshund for life. Still, Mica manages exceptionally well. Once familiar with new surroundings (and provided everything is left relatively in place), he navigates with ease. Again, a reminder: stairs are hazardous and should either be nonexistent or gated at top and bottom in his forever home. Mica has been given a clean

bill of health, and, having been neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped, is more than ready to find his forever home. A few more things to keep in mind: though he does get along with most dogs, he can be selective and should not be with any dogs that are rambunctious, for risk of re-injury. Cats are OK, but the same goes for kids: younger children may, for lack of knowing better, not be gentle with Mica or be tempted to lift him roughly and cause injury. As such, a quiet, adult-only home is desired. “He does have some separation anxiety, so it would be great if he could go to a home where someone is on a regular schedule and wouldn’t leave him alone for long hours,” Yuana adds. “He is very affectionate, though, once he knows you and trusts you, and I know he’ll make the greatest little buddy for someone out there.” Mica would love to be adopted before Valentine’s Day – but after is fine, too! The 17th-century German alchemist Hennig Brand collected 1,500 gallons of urine from beer-drinkers, then cooked and re-cooked it ’til it achieved the “consistency of honey.” Why? Once upon a time, Calvin of the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip made this bold declaration: “Happiness isn’t good enough for me! I demand euphoria!” Given your current astrological aspects, Aries, I think you have every right to invoke that battle cry yourself. From what I can tell, there’s a party underway inside your head. And I’m pretty sure it’s a healthy bash, not a decadent debacle. The bliss it stirs up will be authentic, not contrived. The release and relief it triggers won’t be trivial and transitory, but will generate at least one long-lasting breakthrough.

So, if you’re a pedestrian trudging through the streets as it starts to rain, you may suddenly behold, emerging from the blank grey concrete, Langston Hughes’s poem “Still Here” or Fred Marchant’s “Pear Tree in Flower.” I foresee a metaphorically similar development in your life, Virgo: a pleasant and educational surprise arising unexpectedly out of the vacant blahs.

When he was in the rock band Devo, Mark Mothersbaugh took his time composing and recording new music. From 1978 to 1984, he and his collaborators averaged one album per year. But when Mothersbaugh started writing soundtracks for the weekly TV show Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, his process went into overdrive. He typically wrote an entire show’s worth of music each Wednesday and recorded it each Thursday. I suspect you have that level of creative verve right now, Libra. Use it wisely! If you’re not an artist, channel it into the area of your life that most needs to be refreshed or reinvented.

Many vintage American songs remain available today because of the pioneering ¡ r p £|½ s £ of the 20th century, he travelled widely to track down and record obscure cowboy ballads, folk songs, and traditional African American tunes. “Home on the Range” was a prime example of his many discoveries. He £ £ © £ anthem of the American West,” from a black saloonkeeper in Texas. I suggest we make Lomax a role model for you Scorpios during the coming weeks. It’s an excellent time to preserve and protect the parts of your past that are worth taking with you into the future.

The mountain won’t come to you. It will not acquire the supernatural power to drag itself over to where you are, bend its craggy peak down to your level, and give you a free ride as it returns to its erect position. So, what will you do? Moan and wail in frustration? Retreat into a knot of helpless indignation and sadness? Please don’t. Instead, stop hoping £ ¢ ½ ± on a journey to the remote, majestic pinnacle } £ ¡ z £ ½ Pace yourself. Doggedly master the art of slow, incremental magic.

Who can run faster: a person or a horse? There’s evidence that under certain circumstances, a human can prevail. In June of every year since 1980, the Man Versus Horse Marathon has taken place in the Welsh town of Llanwrtyd Wells. The route of the race weaves 22 miles through marsh, bogs, and hills. On two occasions, a human has outpaced all the horses. According to my astrological analysis, you Capricorns will have that level of animalistic power during the coming weeks. It may not take the form of foot speed, but it will be available as stamina, energy, vitality, and instinctual savvy.

Who would have guessed that Aquarian Charles Darwin, the pioneering theorist of evolution, had a playful streak? Once he £¡ £ £ } £ £ £ } £ y £ } see if anything interesting would happen. “That’s a fool’s experiment,” he confessed to a colleague. “But I love fools’ experiments. s £ £ }£z £ ½ n } } be an excellent time for you to consider trying some fools’ experiments of your own, Aquarius. I bet at least one of them will turn out to be both fun and productive.

In Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, three witches brew up a spell in a cauldron. Among the ingredients they throw in there is the “eye of newt.” Many modern people assume this refers to the optical organ of a salamander, but it doesn’t. It’s actually an archaic term for mustard seed. When I told my Piscean friend r £¢ © £ © £ ¦ n } s } why Jessica didn’ fall in love with me.” He was making a joke about how the love spell he’d tried hadn’t worked. Let’s use this as a teaching story, Pisces. Could it be that one of z £ ¢ ¡£ £¡ the correct ingredients? Did you perhaps have a misunderstanding about the elements you needed for a successful outcome? If so, correct your approach and try again.
