Bond, James Bond Diamonds are forever and so too, it appears, is James Bond. For the past 50 years, no matter who he is played by — Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig — we want to sit in darkened movie theatres to watch him single-handedly (albeit with a few gadgets) save us all from being destroyed by an evil, cunning genius. Why is that? As part of the 007 Reloaded: Bond vs Bond retrospective, the Vancouver International Film Festival is hosting a series of events that probe our enduring fascination for all things Bond. Between screenings of Octopussy and Never Say Never Again on August 30, UBC professors Brian McIlroy and Ernest Mathijs give an academic perspective while on August 31, Canada’s foremost James Bond expert, Murray Gillespie, who is sharing his Bond memorabilia for display, is hosting a quiz where you can compete for prizes as an individual or team. The 20-film retrospective kicks off on August 23 with a sexy Licensed to Party gala ($50) which includes a screening of Dr. No. Single tickets are $11 ($9 for students and seniors) or you can get a four-ticket pack for $32 or a six-ticket pack for $45. If you want to introduce Bond to the younger generation of fans, there will be matinees on Aug. 24, 25, 31 and Sept. 1. (The evening shows are for adults only.) Go to VIFF org for details.

Stylish, dress-coded events keep popping up around Vancouver this summer. If you missed out on the last couple (Deighton Cup, Diner en Blanc) or are simply craving more, the Motionball Port & Starboard Sunday Brunch fundraiser for the Special Olympics Canada Foundation might just be the swank injection the doctor ordered. On August 25, the Keg Yaletown will be transformed, Hamptons-style, by social-goers in their “chic nautical” best. Motionball helps link volunteers and donors to the Special Olympics through integrated social and sporting events, and has donated more than $3,260,000 net since its inception in 2002. Tickets to Port & Starboard are $60 and include two drink tickets, canapés, door prizes, games, entertainment and a ticket to the after party. Hosted by TSN’s Cabral “Cabbie” Richards, brunch runs from 10am to 3pm. Vancouver.Motionball.com

Happy birthday, Stanley Park By Sabrina Furminger

T

hey say that after a certain age you don’t want presents for your birthday, so it’s understandable that all Stanley Park wants for its 125th birthday is one heck of a party. It’s been one-and-a-quarter centuries since Stanley Park was formally opened in the name of Lord Stanley of Preston, the then-Governor General of Canada. The City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Park Board are celebrating this impressive milestone with Celebrate! Stanley Park, a two-day festival featuring free family entertainment, performing and visual arts, interactive sports, heritage experiences and First Na-

tions cultural presentations. The festivities will take place on August 24 and 25 at three Stanley Park hotspots: Second Beach, Lumbermen’s Arch, and Brockton Point. On Second Beach, partygoers will feast on a community picnic and a jam-packed line-up of performances by local musical talent; Lumbermen’s Arch will play host to family-oriented entertainment and Coast Salish artisans and performances; and Brockton Point will be the place to find sporting demos and drop-in games (under the name Brockton Sportsapalooza), as well as an evening theatre performance by Boca del Lupo. Happy birthday, Stanley Park; you don’t look a day over 120. StanleyPark125.ca

Fast Facts

Stanley Park history

• In 1886, as its first act, Vancouver’s newly formed City Council petitioned the federal government to dedicate the land as a park. • Archaeological evidence suggests human activity in the park dating back more than 3,000 years. Historically, the area was the traditional Coast Salish territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. • Siwash Rock, also known by the Squamish name Slhxi7lsh, stands 50-60 feet tall. In Legends of Vancouver, poet Pauline Johnson relates the Squamish oral history that a man was transformed into this rock by four powerful giants as monument to clean fatherhood. • The Nine O’Clock Gun is a 12-pound naval cannon cast in England in 1816. It was brought to Stanley Park in 1894 to warn fishermen of the 6pm Sunday close of fishing, and was fired for the first time on Oct. 15, 1898 at noon. The 9pm firing was established later, as a time signal for Vancouverites and ships in port. Previously, the Brockton Point lighthouse keeper, William D. Jones, had detonated a stick of dynamite over the water to similar effect. The cannon was stolen by UBC Engineering students in 1969. The gun also has a Twitter parody account that tweets “BOOM!” every day at 9pm.

• On Sept. 21, 1980, the Seawall loop around Stanley Park was declared completed, with the final paving between Third and Second Beach. One-way cycling counterclockwise began in June, 1984. A view from Georgia Street including part of the Lost Lagoon Tea Room (1938) | City of Vancouver archives

• In December of 2006, a powerful windstorm downed 10,000 trees in the park.

• Stanley Park is a Canadian National Historic Site and covers 1,000 acres of peninsula. • The park sees 8 million visitors per year, and the totem poles at Brockton Point are the most visited tourist attraction in BC. • The park has roughly 500,000 cedar, fir and hemlock trees and produces 18,000 tons of oxygen each year . • The Stanley Park section of the seawall is 8.8km long and takes 2-3 hours to walk, or 1 hour to bike. • Due to an inebriated crew, the S.S. Beaver — the first steamship to operate in the Pacific Northwest — went aground on rocks at Prospect Point on July 25, 1888, finally sinking in July 1892. • Largest crew working on the seawall at one time: 2,300 in 1920. Art in the park

Cycle City tour guide Dan Hayes could conduct a lengthy public art tour just in Stanley Park alone, but he highlighted three pieces for us, notable for their unorthodox history: • Queen Victoria Memorial Fountain (1905) Bronze and granite (pictured, above). Located across from Vancouver Rowing Club. Rendered obsolete and hard-to-access in the creation the of Lions Gate Bridge roadway. Designed by James Blomfield (creator of Vancouver’s Coat of Arms). Made from the same batch of granite as the Victory Square Cenotaph. “It’s kind of cool how you have this serious piece of public art, but because of some rerouting, it gets totally lost.”

• Sideways Tree (post-2006) Located along the Stanley Park Causeway. “Placed here after the windstorm that hit Stanley Park, it’s an example of how an object gets recontextualized and therefore becomes art. It’s also really successful because people are always interacting with this piece. • Two Spirits (mid-1990s) Tucked away, this beautiful but unauthorized sculpture (pictured, right) is found just west of the crossroads of trails that enter into Stanley Park from the swimming pool located at Second Beach. The sculpture was chiseled into a stump that remains from one the large trees in the area. “For a piece of amateur, guerrilla art, I think it’s pretty impressive.”

New species named after Stanley Park

During the research conducted following the windstorms of 2006, UBC’s John McLean led surveys as part of the restoration program to identify insects which had a special appetite for wood. This work ultimately led to the discovery of two new species of insects, one of which was named after the park itself. The Seawall’s enduring legacy

The majority of the Stanley Park portion of the wall was built between 1914 and 1971. The idea was conceived to stop foreshore erosion from the wake of ships passing through First Narrows. James Cunningham, a Park Board master stonemason, spent 32 years on the project until his death in 1963 and oversaw much the construction of the original wall. Cunningham continued supervising the project into his final days, despite being ill, and, apparently, on at least one occasion, went to check the seawall’s progress still wearing pajamas. He died in 1963, 17 years before the wall was completed, and plaque commemorating Cunningham’s work can be seen in the rock face above the Seawall at Siwash Rock, where his ashes were scattered.

Hunting in Stanley Park? Only the BioBlitz kind

H

erons, geese, raccoons, rhododendrons, trees — if this is the extent to which you can describe the flora and fauna of Stanley Park, then its 125th birthday is the perfect chance to get to know it a whole lot better. You might even discover a neverbefore-seen species in the process. August 24 to 25, the Stanley Park Ecological Society (SPES) is hosting a BioBlitz to identify what flies, hops, crawls and flutters around the clock in the park. Even though the park is surrounded by a highly urbanized landscape and sees more than eight million visitors a year, it is an oasis for a wide range of plants, animals, fungi and pollinators. Wetlands such as Beaver Lake and Lost Lagoon teem with plants and wildlife. But even managed landscapes such as the Rose Garden and other areas with ornamental plantings provide food and shelter for many insects, small mammals and birds. During the BioBlitz, visitors will have the opportunity to survey local wildlife, take part in hands-on stewardship activities and learning about everything from forest ecology to local birds to bats and beavers through educational walks and talks. “While we may think we know

Stanley Park pretty well, it’s a vast place and remains full of surprises,” says Patricia Gooch, SPES’ BioBlitz organizer. “At the BioBlitz, you will have a chance to get up close to some of the tiniest creatures that live in the ocean just feet away from the seawall during a plankton survey or you can learn more about the park’s forest ecosystem and the giant trees during a forest walk. Or, if you come along to one of the evening events, you may see a bat feeding over Beaver Lake, hear an owl calling in the distance or make discoveries about the social lives of our resident beavers.” This weekend, scientists, volunteers and members of the public will collaborate on finding, identifying and recording as many species of plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms as possible to increase SPES’ knowledge of the park’s biodiversity. This will help SPES, a non-profit that connects park visitors with nature through school and educational programs, improve its stewardship activities and will guide the advice SPES gives to the Park Board on habitat management strategies. At the previous BioBlitz in 2011, 395 different species of flora and fauna were found and, of those, 152 new species were

With more scientists and naturalists involved and more events, SPES is hopeful that it will make even more discoveries in Stanley Park this year. With more than 30 nature events happening throughout the weekend, there’s something for everyone. All events are free and there’s no need to register, just show up a little early. and watch out for swans and herons stalking the shallows.

f there’s anyone who knows what to do and where to go, it’s Tourism Vancouver. We’ve enlisted their expertise about how to best enjoy and explore Stanley Park. “With 1,000 acres of forests, lakes, beaches and trails, Stanley Park is a must-see for visitors to Vancouver. Recently recognized as one of the World’s Best City Parks by Travel + Leisure magazine, Stanley Park has something for everyone, including a stunning ninekilometre seawall, the Vancouver Aquarium and a collection of First Nations totem poles. But what about the park’s lesser-known gems?”

Work on your short game At Stanley Park Pitch & Putt. This 18-hole, par-3 golf course is located inside the park and bordered by a rhododendron garden that flourishes in summer. Sculpted fairways, lush greens and towering trees add up to a memorable afternoon for duffers of all levels. Rounds start at just $12.95.

Soak in the sunset At The Teahouse. Situated on a grassy bluff overlooking English Bay, this restaurant tucked away on the park’s western edge is great for viewing summer sunsets. Fresh West Coast cuisine, with an emphasis on local seafood, makes a perfect end to a day in the park.

Hike to Beaver Lake A network of well-marked trails winds through the park’s expansive forests. For a quick and rewarding hike, pick up the Beaver Lake trail, which leads to a lily-covered pond frequented by ducks, raccoons and even a few namesake beavers.

Garden-hop Stanley Park boasts spectacular gardens, some of which remain in bloom year-round. Take a stroll through the Ted and Mary Greig Rhododendron Garden and view 4,500-plus hybrid rhododendron and azalea plants. Afterwards, visit the Stanley Park Rose Garden and wander among some 3,500 vibrantly coloured rose plants.

Explore Lost Lagoon This man-made lake is hidden at the park’s overlooked southern edge, in the shadow of downtown’s high-rises. Take a scenic walk around the tree-lined shore

Modern vs authentic ramen FollowMeFoodie By Mijune Pak

L

ast week I wrote about authenticity in food. We live in a multi-cultural city with endless ethnic dining options, so we end up using the term “authentic” loosely. We see so many cuisines borrowing ideas from each other that we become more open minded to modern interpretations for traditional dishes, or a fusion style of cooking. Ramen has become widely celebrated outside of Japan over the last few years, and Vancouver has fully embraced it. Following last week’s article here is an example and recommendations of where to find modern and traditional styles of ramen.

Modern ramen Harvest Union Community Foods doubles as a local artisan foods store and a casual ramen shop seating about 10. The style of ramen is Westernized, but that is not to say it is not good. Their ramen with pork shoulder, radish, egg and candied bacon is a much lighter, healthier and colourful version of the Japanesestyle ramen. The candied bacon (from Two Rivers Meats) and radish (from North Arm Farms) is not typical of authentic ramen, but they believe in the “eat local” movement and their ingredients are sustainable. Their rice noodle with hazelnut and charred chili is a soupless dish that is not authentic to any cuisine, but nonetheless culturally inspired and delicious. Hazelnuts are not found in Asian cuisine but I actually preferred this noodle bowl to their ramen and it was an original idea. It is a nice option to have during the warmer weather, too. HarvestUnion.ca | 243 Union.

Traditional ramen There are many to choose from, and while the ramen scene in Vancouver can get even better, I prefer Ramen Santouka or Motomachi Shokudo for my ramen fix. Both offer traditional Japanese ramen but represent very different styles which are regional

in Japan. Motomachi Shokudo is sister restaurant to Kintaro, which was the first specialty ramen shop in Vancouver. Kintaro still gets line-ups, but I prefer Motomachi, just a few doors down. Their healthier Bamboo-Charcoal Dark Miso Ramen option with Japanese leek, menma (bamboo shoots), soft-boiled local organic egg, green onion, BBQ pork, thinly sliced chili pepper, white pepper, seasonal green vegetable, and chili pepper powder is a signature dish and not available elsewhere. 740 Denman. It is apples and oranges to compare the mentioned ramen bowls and shops, but my favourite is Ramen Santouka. They specialize in a Northern style of ramen, which is different than ramen from Tokyo, Hakata and Sapporo, three cities known for the dish. Their Toroniku Shio Ramen has a very rich and creamy, savoury, milky broth made of simmered pork bones. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is healthy though; this is pure Japanese indulgence. Standard toppings include Toroniku pork jowl, menma and “wood ear mushrooms” also known as Auricularia auricula-judae — a fungus popularly used in Chinese cuisine. There is no candied bacon, and in the context of Vancouver these toppings might sound more exotic, but this how traditional ramen is served. It might be an acquired taste and it is not about the “eat local” movement here, but traditional is traditional and they make Japanese food with Japanese ingredients. 1690 Robson. Find Mijune at Diner en Blanc, Vancouver’s largest all-in-white outdoor dinner party on August 22. Graze Restaurant is also hosting a vegetarian and vegan BBQ on August 24 ($30/ticket) in support of FCancer.com (GrazeRestaurant.ca), and the “Culinary arts, wine and travel enthusiasts” meet-up is happening the same evening 5 to 10pm at Vinci’s Caffe and Gallery at 194 W 3rd ($20/ticket). recently hosted an event that was ostensibly a ‘German Riesling 101’ for some folks. It was towards the end, as I was starting to put glasses back into their racks, that a lady’s comment summed up the whole evening. “Wow, knowing how to decipher just a few of a label’s terms really makes German wines so much less complicated than I thought they were,” she said. And she was totally right! I immediately decided to try to make things less complicated for a broader audience in this week’s column. Most importantly, German wines are all about regionality and ripeness. In saying that, words in italics are key terms to pay attention to. Here are six bottles worthy of your time.

Schiefer Gymnasium Riesling | Mosel, Germany | $20 | BC Liquor Stores This one’s from the Mosel region which is also Germany’s coolest growing area. Rieslings here are amongst the country’s most crisp and delicate, often with flavours of apple and floral characteristics.

Moselland Kabinett Riesling | Mosel, Germany | $13.99 | BC Liquor Stores The Prädikat system categorizes wines based on how ripe they were at harvest. The later grapes are picked, the riper they’ll be, which will most often translate to more sweetness and alcohol. Kabinett is the first level in the hierarchy, meaning these are the driest wines. The one’s from the Mosel, so we know to expect a slightly more delicate style as well.

Schmitt Niersteiner Spätlese Riesling | Rheinhessen, Germany | $13.99 | BC Liquor Stores Spätlese literally means ‘late harvest,’ and this is the second tier of ripeness. Expect some slight honeyed notes with gently carmelized edges, but still lively acidity keeping everything balanced.

Dr Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese | Mosel, Germany | $57.95 | BC Liquor Stores Gruen Riesling | Rheingau, Germany | $22-ish | Private Wine Stores

The Rheingau region is warmer than the Mosel, with slate-driven soils that offer great minerality. Wines around here are often a little more powerful and sturdy. Citrusy intensity is common.

One more step up the ladder are Auslese wines, which are where you’ll start to get into more of a rich wine, full of stewed stonefruit with even more of those honeyed notes. You’ll notice that this is also where the prices start climbing their own ladder! Of course, there’s so much more to German wine, with many more regions and higher levels on the ripeness scale. But for now, grab a couple styles that may appeal, order in some Thai food, and have fun exploring the wonderful world of German Riesling! What grows around, comes around Vancouver Community College’s culinary college and cafeterias are helping the farmers who grow our food. Several times a week, leftover food scraps are trucked by Northwest Organics to a ranch near Lytton. The waste is processed into clean compost that is spread on surrounding farmland to help grow crops such as alfalfa, which is sold to dairy farms as cattle feed. In the first three months of the program, the college diverted more than 111 tonnes of organic waste, most of which comes from the downtown campus. VCC, which has been carbon neutral since 2010, is also exploring ways to grow organic food on campus.

Sockeye run upgraded but concerns linger Fraser River temperatures still a worry as more salmon arrive By Jeff Nagel

T

he estimated size of the Fraser River sockeye run was boosted Friday as more inbound salmon are arriving later than anticipated in the waters around Vancouver Island. The Pacific Salmon Commission now estimates the main summer run of

sockeye at 2.3 million fish, up from two million as of Aug. 13, and the early summer run is now pegged at 520,000 fish, up from 475,000. The overall run size is currently estimated at just over three million, with laterun sockeye that were projected to add 583,000 not yet included in the count. That’s well below the 4.8 million run size forecast for this summer, but an improvement from the 1.6 million return of four years ago that triggered the Cohen Inquiry. There’s still deep concern that high river temperatures of around 21° – 3.3 degrees higher than average – may kill up

to 70 per cent of the incoming sockeye before they can spawn. That prompted the commission to scale back test fishing to reduce pressure on the stock and DFO cut off all sports angling for salmon on the lower Fraser to avoid any sockeye bycatch there. Observers have reported seeing more floating carcasses in the river but the PSC said most sockeye swimming upriver appear to be in good condition so far. Close to nine million pink salmon are also forecast to arrive, however, and large numbers are now being detected, suggesting an even bigger run than predicted.

The Wiens Family

Moore blasts back at telcos Federal Industry Minister James Moore has fired back at Canada’s big three telecom firms in response to their campaign against the potential entry of US mobile phone carrier Verizon. Bell Canada, Telus and Rogers have taken to the airwaves with ads objecting to Verizon’s ability to use existing infrastructure without having to build its own network if the US giant buys up one of Canada’s two smaller wireless firms that are up for sale. They also have a website, FairForCanada.ca, that contends Verizon would threaten Canadian jobs and potentially users’ privacy and security. Their spokesman accused the Tories of scoring populist political points by tempting a “misinformed public with the lure of lower prices through more competition. Moore said the companies’ claims are filled with assumptions and misinformation about the federal government’s intent. The federal Conservatives launched their own website Friday to counter the telcos — ConsumersFirst.ca. It underscores the high prices Canadians pay compared to other countries and argues Canada’s big three carriers won’t be forced out by Verizon because they own 85 per cent of the wireless spectrum.

Traffic map taps cellphone signals A new online traffic map for the Lower Mainland has been unveiled that anonymously tracks cellphone signals to calculate and display congestion levels in real time. According to the transportation ministry, personal data from cellphones is removed before being incorporated in the map’s data system, but privacy advocates have expressed concern. The map is on the Translink.ca and DriveBC.ca websites. Major arteries are colour coded, with red indicating very slow traffic and green showing it’s moving smoothly. It’s also expected to help various agencies study traffic flows in Metro Vancouver. The map covers Highway 1 from Horseshoe Bay to Chilliwack, Highway 99 from the Peace Arch to Whistler, as well as all other numbered highways and major commuter routes in the region.

Coal fight turns to Texada Island Anti-coal campaigners opposed to a new coalhandling terminal in Surrey have turned to Powell River in their search for allies. The proposed Fraser Surrey Docks terminal would take coal by rail and then send it by barge to Texada Island, just a few kilometres offshore of Powell River on the Sunshine Coast. Up to eight million tonnes of coal a year could be barged there and stockpiled for transfer to ocean-going ships. Port Metro Vancouver has not yet ruled on whether the new terminal can be built, but it has been opposed by Metro Vancouver, several local cities and faces demands from medical health officers for a health impact assessment.

Herbicide OK’d in tidal zones The province will spray herbicides for the first time to control cordgrass, an invasive weed that’s taken root in tidal areas of Boundary Bay and Roberts Bank. The work began Aug. 19 and is limited to infestations on cobble beaches, salt marshes and intertidal mudflats, with follow-up spraying set for September. Environment ministry officials say cordgrass can turn coastal mudflats into large patches or solid stands of dense grass, with severe habitat loss for shorebirds, waterfowl, shellfish and fish while increasing the risk of flooding due to sediment accumulation and altered drainage. No submissions opposing the recently approved pesticide use permit were received during a fivemonth public review. More cordgrass infestations along Burrard Inlet in North Vancouver and near Port Moody may be treated in 2014 or 2015.

Bosa Development’s Pacific Point includes gourmet kitchens with stainless-steel appliances and an undermount sink, above, as well as open layouts and huge windows that let the natural light pour in, top and bottom right.

Fine Yaletown living at Bosa’s Pacific Point By Kerry Vital

In the Lower Mainland’s busy real estate market, luxury and sophistication is tops on the lists of many buyers. Bosa Development ticks both of those boxes with Pacific Point, its condominium project in Vancouver’s Yaletown neighbourhood. “Response has been overwhelming for Pacific Point,” says Bosa Sales and Marketing

Manager Lisa Murrell. “There simply isn’t anything like it in Vancouver.” Pacific Point was originally a rental building, but was purchased by Nat Bosa and converted into condos. Every suite has been completely redone, with new appliances, new decor and new plumbing. The building holds 214 homes, ranging from 450 to 1,680 square feet. Buyers will find amazing views of False Creek, George Wainborn Park, David Lam Park, English Bay and downtown Vancouver from every suite, along with high-end kitchens, elegant living areas and gorgeous bathrooms. The kitchens feature a quartz-slab backsplash, polished quartz countertops and stainless-steel appliances, complemented by undercabinet task lighting, an undermount sink and imported Italian Armony Cucine cabinetry with soft-close doors and drawers,

which also appears in the bathrooms. Laminate wood flooring is included throughout most of the main living areas, with large porcelain tiles in the dens and chic carpeting in the bedrooms. The modern bathrooms have their own porcelain tiles and polished quartz countertops, as well as a fantastic soaker tub and an enclosed glass shower in select ensuites. In-suite laundry facilities come standard in every home, as well as custom roller blinds and solid wood entry doors that will easily block out the rest of the world. Homeowners have the choice of two interior colour schemes, Latte and Grey, designed by Cristina Oberti Interior Design. Bosa has long been known for amazing homes and its customer service focus, and this certainly continues with Pacific Point.

Nat Bosa himself is a real estate legend in the Lower Mainland. “Buyers know they are going to get quality and Nat Bosa’s value assurance backing the project,” Murrell says. The Yaletown neighbourhood is known as one of the most vibrant in the city, and Pacific Point is perfectly situated to take advantage of everything that the area has to offer. Restaurants and shopping are right on your doorstep, as well as transit, entertainment, leisure and recreation. If you’re in the mood for some outdoor activity, you’re just moments away from the SeaWall. At Pacific Point itself, you’ll find a swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, fitness studio and yoga area, and a residents lounge with a pool table, as well as a grand double-height lobby and concierge. Homes at Pacific Point are move-in ready and start at $344,900. For more information, visit www.pacificpointcondos.com, call 604-685-0855 or visit the sales centre at 1323 Homer Street, Vancouver any day except Fridays, from noon to 5 p.m.

Why, thank you! In line at Subway on Robson on August 13, I was surprised to find myself behind a gentleman who actually said please and thank you when he was dealing with the person making his sandwich. I made the point of thanking him for being so polite. (I said something to the effect that I thought I was the only person left who said please and thank you because you rarely hear it anymore). He responded that if he were not polite, his dad would not be impressed. Good on ya, dad! You brought up a polite son! Wouldn’t it be nice if more people would opt for the polite route, instead of seemingly barking out orders! John

Fuel for thought Why does Downtown Vancouver currently have the highest gas prices in North America at $1.44

per litre? I’d love to know why we Downtown Vancouverites are deemed to be so well off that we can afford pay an extra 12 cents per litre over, say, Mission, which currently has the lowest prices in the Lower Mainland at just $1.32. Glad I brought my European diesel-driving habits with me when I moved here! Roger

Cull the gulls I want to thank the owners of an apartment building on Barclay that has hired a firm to install barriers to keep the hundreds of seagulls from using the roof to live and nest. The NOISE from these sea gulls is unacceptable. Everywhere in the West End, I can hear the constant bleating of the young gull chicks, as well as the screaming parents who are protecting the nest and warning off other birds and predators. It is excruciating, to hear this. The gull population is out of control and no one will do anything to keep them from using our buildings or cull them in some way. If car alarms go off we can do something about it, but the noise coming from gulls goes through my double glaze windows. Someone in the government needs to take this over-population seriously! BC Liberals out-spent NDP on way to election By Jeff Nagel

T

he BC Liberals spent $11.75 million this year on their way to a come-from-behind provincial election victory. The governing party, which listed $8.5 million in donations, out-spent the NDP, which listed spending of $9.4 million and received $9.7 million. The disclosures released by Elections BC Monday include amounts spent before the formal 60-day campaign period when specific limits apply. The Liberals spent more in advance of the May 15 election. Within the 60-day campaign itself, the

Liberals spent nearly $4.3 million to the NDP’s $4.1 million. Corporate contributors gave $5 million in donations to the Liberals, followed by individuals at $2.4 million, unincorporated businesses at $420,000 and $385,000 from other sources. NDP got nearly $2.6 million from individuals, $2.5 million from trade unions and $2.1 million from corporations. The Green Party of BC, which won its historic first seat in Oak Bay-Gordon Head, did so on spending of just $180,000. The Green Party spent more than the BC Conservative Party, which listed $155,000 in expenses.

Improving Vancouver’s infrastructure: Construction at the south end of the Burrard Bridge – Expect delays Effective August 26 The Burrard and Cornwall intersection at the south end of the Burrard Bridge will be under construction beginning August 26. This project will improve traffic safety and accessibility around the Burrard Bridge. The improvements to the intersection will: • Simplify the intersection by making it easier to navigate and safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to use. • Improve safety and decrease travel time for pedestrians at the intersection by reducing the maximum number of pedestrian crossings from five down to two. • Decrease the volume and speed of vehicle traffic coming off the Burrard Bridge onto Cornwall Avenue.

WEVancouver.com

The replacement of expansion joints on the Burrard Bridge will also be coordinated with this work. During construction, motorists can expect traffic changes, lane restrictions and delays and are encouraged to use the Granville Street Bridge. The intersection will remain open and be accessible to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, and there will be full access to businesses along Cornwall Avenue and Vanier Park. Paradise Lost? Exhibit at Museum of Anthropology questions the way we view the Southern Pacific By Martha Perkins

I

n Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, Adam and Eve’s nakedness is initially as natural as the lush beauty of the Garden of Eden. Then Eve goes against God’s command and bites into the apple from the Tree of Knowledge. Suddenly, Adam and Eve look at each other’s nakedness differently. They lust after one another, have sex, and awake to the knowledge

that there is good and evil in this world. The burden of having to choose between the two has been mankind’s to bear ever since. For centuries, Westerners portrayed the South Pacific as a Garden of Eden, where demure bare-breasted women pluck flowers to put behind their ear — sexual but in an innocent sort of way. The men are all noble savages, strong and brave even as the onslaught of modernity reveals their powerlessness.

David Ambong’s painting, Land Disputing in Port Vila, 2010, he explores conflicts that are arising between families. While some people want to sell land in Vanuatu to developers (the fellow in the white hat), others say that it’s not their land to sell. All this in a collection of islands in the South Pacific called “the happiest place on earth.”

Northern Coast and South Pacific cultures, past and present, co-exist as part of the Paradise Lost? exhibit at the Museum of Anthropology. A Haida Gwaii totem stands between a sculpture by Papua New Guinea artist Michael Timbin and polystyrene cube, Box of Promises, by Maori artist George Nuk and Squamish/Haida artist Cory Douglas. Martha Perkins photo

An exhibit at the Museum of Anthropology challenges those stereoptypes. It asks whether the South Pacific ever was a paradise and, if it was, whether that paradise has since been lost to such things as ecological degradation and the cultural pressures that go with it. “The Pacific is a complicated place; it’s not what you think,” says Carol Mayer, curator of Paradise Lost?, a collection of 28 works by 13 artists dotted throughout the MOA until September 29. (There are also works on display at the Satellite Gallery, 560 Seymour, until August 31.) The exhibit was born out of the 2013 Pacific Arts Association’s international symposium, which MOA hosted in early August. Since there was already a major art exhibition at the museum (Safar/ Voyage), Mayer decided to intersperse the contemporary art pieces throughout the existing displays.

One-third of the world is touched by the Pacific Ocean yet, given how small some of the islands are, and how far apart they are from one another, it’s hard for us to know much about the people at the other end of our horizon. Mayer showcases — sometimes for the first time in North America — work by artists from Papua New Guinea, Aotearoa (New Zealand), the Republic of Vanuatu and Samoa. Sometimes they want to challenge our perceptions. Sometimes they want to sound the warning bell, letting the world know what’s really happening. However, what each artist seems to be asking for is our understanding. Since we’ve all bitten from the apple, they want us to embrace knowledge by getting to know more about their culture, good and bad. One of the most telling paintings is by David Ambong, who was born on an island in Vanuatu,

described by some as “the happiest place on earth.” Centuries of colonization ended in 1980; the idea was to return the land to the original owners, but no one can agree who those owners are, even among the islands’ families. “Land Disputing in Port Vila, 2010,” shows a cool-as-a-cucumber white man walking away from two fighting brothers, one of whom is clutching a bag of gold coins. The brother with the gold coins — the modern-day equivalent of Satan’s apple — wants to cash in on the tourism potential and, like the white man, doesn’t care that the island’s beauty will have to be destroyed to make room for the hotels. The other brother says it isn’t his land to sell. The question mark in exhibit’s title is telling: the answers always lead to more questions; we’re even told to question our questions.

Movie Reviews A tasty end to Cornetto trilogy THE WORLD’S END

Starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost Directed by Edgar Wright Comedic film collaborations come and go but few are as dependable as the trio of director Edgar Wright with actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The Cornetto Trilogy (named for the different Cornetto ice cream flavour that appears in each movie) began in 2004 with the genrebending Shaun of the Dead, continued with the acclaimed Hot Fuzz in 2007 and now concludes with The World’s End. This time around, five high school friends, led by a washed up Pegg, reunite in their hometown to complete The Golden Mile, a famous pub crawl they couldn’t finish in their bygone days. Things begin to get weird when it appears most of the neighbourhood’s residents have been

taken over by blue-blooded alien robots. Having tackled horror and the buddy cop genres, Wright sets his sights squarely on sci-fi for this frequently hilarious and sometimes poignant, pint-filled escapade. The jokes come fast and furious for the first 45 minutes as Pegg rounds up his former misfits, all of whom have now become buttoned-down professionals. The strength of Wright and Pegg’s reThor Diakow lentlessly witty script is enhanced wonderfully thanks to a talented bunch which comprises of Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and veteran Eddie Marsan. Once the body snatching premise unravels things get a little silly and violent but Wright is quick to steer the ship back in the right direction for a satisfying denouement. The World’s End may not be the game changer of its predecessors but marks a triumphant return for the talented team.

This cup doesn’t runneth over THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES

Starring Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Jonathan Rhys Meyers Directed by Harald Zwart The clearest evidence that Cassandra Clare — author of The Mortal Instruments young adult fantasy series — got her start writing fan fiction online is her willingness to mix and match “influences” and rely on the question “Wouldn’t it be awesome if...?” to serve as the catalyst for her slapdash plotting. To wit: Wouldn’t it be awesome if you (or, in this case, Lily Collins) learned that you weren’t just another human “mundane”? If you were this dimension’s last line of defence against demons? If you could gain mystic powers by drawing tribal tattoos on yourself? If werewolves and vampires duked it out in New York City? If there was a High Warlock of Brooklyn who threw killer parties? If a leather-clad brooder (Jamie Campbell Bower) made eyes at you? If another leather-clad brooder (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) declared you his arch-enemy? While you appreciate City of Bones owning its goth silliness and employing some unexpectedly grotesque creature de-

sign, its transition to the big screen is an awkward one. Haphazardly directed by Harald Zwart, it serves as the cinematic equivalent of taking an adolescent ADHD sufferer, filling them with Red Bull, and asking them to recount the events of Clare’s novel from memory. It’s soon tripping over its tangle of storylines and backtracking to cover important details it initially forgot. It also leaves you wondering how, given the narrative’s evident surfeit of (largely borrowed) ideas, it couldn’t manage a more evocative name for a key sacred relic than “the cup”? Unfortunately, you can’t help but see the over-stuffed Mortal Instruments as half-empty. — Curtis Woloschuk

Skills and Spills

Think pink... salmon

The Hospitality Grind, Wine Barrel Race, Tug of War... If this sounds like your type of fun, then put together a team of six to eight friends to compete in Skills and Spills. The day of challenges and games is hosted by the BC Hospitality Foundation as part of its Tip Out to Help campaign. It supports workers within the hospitality community who are coping with a financial crisis arising from a health or medical condition. Teams must raise a minimum of $1,000. It’s October 20 at the Hellenic Cultural Centre from noon to 5pm. Go to SkillsSpills.ca to register.

While there are concerns about sockeye salmon numbers this year, an estimated nine million pink salmon are expected to flood the Fraser River. To celebrate, The Pacific Salmon Foundation is hosting a festival on August 25 at Hadden Park next to the Maritime Museum. There will be interactive educational displays, children’s activities, music and raffles from noon to 5pm and a donation gets you samplings of barbequed pink salmon prepared by sustainable food advocates Robbert Clark, Ronnie Shewchuk and Garrett Schack. What’s your style/beauty life saver? Be happy because today is the first day of the rest of your life. Finish this sentence: Even on my ‘blah’-est day, I won’t leave the house without: My high heels. If you could have coffee with a fashion icon, past or present, who and why? I think it would be Coco Chanel. She started from nothing and created an empire. Of course it was during a time when clothing was becoming fashion, and what amazes me is that she was able to build a powerhouse during a time when women supposedly were unable to accomplish much outside of the household.

Thursday, August 22, 2013 WE Vancouver that for prehistoric cave painting.” Whether or not you’re an artist, Gemini, this would be an excellent approach for you in the coming days. You’re in a phase when you can thrive by being a gatherer of everything that attracts and fascinates you. You don’t need to know yet why you’re assembling all these clues. That will be revealed in good time.

Your assignment, Virgo, is to conjure up your own version of that wild desire: a clear statement of exactly what you really, really want in all of its extravagant glory. I think it’ll be healthy for you to identify this pure and naked longing. (P.S. I’m not implying that you should immediately try to get it fulfilled, though. For now, the important thing is knowing what it is.)

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): An Indian student named Sankalp Sinha has invented the “Good Morning Sing N Shock.” It’s an alarm clock that plays you a song and gives you a small electrical jolt when you hit the snooze button. The voltage applied is far less intense than, say, a taser, and is designed to energize you rather than disable you. I encourage you to seek out wake-up calls like the kind this device administers, Aries: fairly gentle, yet sufficiently dramatic to get your attention. The alternative would be to wait around for blind fate to provide the wake-up calls. They might be a bit more strenuous.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): Can you remember the last time you bumped up against a limitation caused by your lack of knowledge? What did it feel like? I expect that sometime soon you will have that experience again. You may shiver with worry as you contemplate the potential consequences of your continued ignorance. But you may also feel the thrill of hungry curiosity rising up in you. If all goes well, the fear and curiosity will motivate you to get further educated. You will set to work on a practical plan to make it happen.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): Now and then a British Libra named Lloyd Scott dresses up in funny costumes while competing in long-distance races. He does it to raise money for charity. In the 2011 London Marathon, he wore a nine-foot snail outfit for the duration of the course. It took him 27 days to finish. I suggest you draw inspiration from his heroic effort. From a cosmic perspective, it would make sense for you to take your time as you engage in amusing activities that benefit your fellow humans.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): If you Google the statement “I can change overnight,” most of the results that come up are negative, such as “It’s not something I can change overnight” or “I don’t think I can change overnight.” But there’s one Google link to “I can change overnight.” It’s a declaration made by Taurus painter Willem de Kooning. He was referring to how unattached he was to defining his work and how easy it was for him to mutate his artistic style. I wouldn’t normally advise you Tauruses to use “I can change overnight” as your battle cry. But for the foreseeable future you do have the power to make some rather rapid and thorough transformations.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): “My story isn’t sweet and harmonious like invented stories,” wrote novelist Herman Hesse. “It tastes of folly and bewilderment, of madness and dream, like the life of all people who no longer want to lie to themselves.” As interesting as Hesse’s declaration is, let’s not take it as gospel. Let’s instead envision the possibility that when people reduce the number of lies they tell themselves, their lives may become sweeter and more harmonious as a result. I propose that exact scenario for you right now, Leo. There might be a rough adjustment period as you cut back on your self-deceptions, but eventually your folly and bewilderment will diminish as the sweet harmony grows.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): “The artist is by necessity a collector,” said graphic designer Paul Rand. “He accumulates things with the same ardor and curiosity with which a boy stuffs his pockets. He borrows from the sea and from the scrap heap; he takes snapshots, makes mental notes, and records impressions on tablecloths and newspapers. He has a taste for children’s wall scrawling as appreciative as

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): Novelist James Joyce once articulated an extreme wish that other writers have probably felt but never actually said. “The demand that I make of my reader,” said Joyce, “is that he should devote his whole life to reading my works.” Was he being mischievous? Maybe. But he never apologized or issued a retraction.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21): What will you do now that you have acquired more clout and visibility? Will you mostly just pump up your self-love and bask in the increased attention? There’s nothing wrong with that, of course. But if those are the only ways you cash in on your added power, the power won’t last. I suggest you take advantage of your enhanced influence by engaging in radical acts of magnanimity. Perform good deeds and spread big ideas. The more blessings you bestow on your fellow humans, the more enduring your new perks will be. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21): You’ve been pretty wild and uncontained lately, and that’s OK. I’ve loved seeing how much permission you’ve given yourself to ramble free, experiment with the improbable, and risk being a fool. I suspect that history will judge a majority of your recent explorations as tonic. But now, Sagittarius, the tenor of the time is shifting. To continue being in alignment with your highest good, I believe you will have to rein in your wanderlust and start attending to the care and cultivation of your power spot. Can you find a way to enjoy taking on more responsibility?

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): To launch your horoscope, I’ll steal a line from a Thomas Pynchon novel: A revelation trembles just beyond the threshold of your understanding. To continue your oracle, I’ll borrow a message I heard in my dream last night: A breakthrough shivers just beyond the edge of your courage. Next, I’ll use words I think I heard while eavesdropping on a conversation at Whole Foods: If you want to cook up the ultimate love feast, you’re still missing one ingredient. And to finish this oracle, Pisces, I’ll say that if you want to precipitate the trembling revelation, activate the shivering breakthrough, and acquire the missing ingredient, imitate what I’ve done in creating this horoscope. Assume the whole world is offering you useful clues, and listen closely.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): “I want to be with those who know the secret things, or else alone,” wrote the eccentric ecstatic poet Rainer Maria Rilke. That wouldn’t be a good rule for you Aquarians to live by all the time. To thrive, you need a variety of cohorts and allies, including those who know and care little about secret things. But I suspect that for the next few weeks, an affinity for those who know secret things might suit you well. More than that, they may be exactly the accomplices who will help you attend to your number one assignment: exploratory holy work in the depths.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19): “The person who can’t visualize a horse galloping on a tomato is an idiot,” said the founder of Surrealism, writer André Breton. I wouldn’t go so far as to call such an imagination-deprived soul an “idiot,” but I do agree with the gist of his declaration. One of the essential facets of intelligence is the ability to conjure up vivid and creative images in one’s mind. When daily life has grown a bit staid or stuck or overly serious, this skill becomes even more crucial. Now is one of those times for you, Capricorn. If you have any trouble visualizing a horse galloping on a tomato, take measures to boost the fertility of your imagination.
