It’s our friends, our families, our neighbours that make Vancouver the best place on Earth. So for the 19th year in a row, Westender has asked you, the people of Vancouver, our readers, to tell us what makes this city so special. This year a record number of people took part in the online poll, proving once again that Vancouverites love their city, and they’re not afraid to say so. The Sunday Service Sundays are about rituals. If there’s one day of the week when we always do that one thing, it’s Sunday. For some, it’s laundry. For others, it’s daytime drinking at the pub and British dramas on PBS. Some people even go to church. For one diligent group of comedians, Sunday is the day they hold court in the hallowed house of worship that is the Fox Cabaret. Their ritual involves a live improv show that keeps attendees coming back for more games, sketches, and absurdity each and every week. The group and their live show are interchangeably called The Sunday Service. Their members include Ryan Beil, Caitlin Howden, Kevin Lee, Aaron Read, Taz VanRassel, and musical director Emmett Hall. The Sunday Service began 10 years ago at a now-defunct vegan fast food café, says Beil in a recent phone interview (“We’ve been saying 10 years ago for about two years, so we’re really loose with the time,” interjects Howden, who is also present on the call). Exact date aside, back in those early days, the group was a duo – Beil and VanRassel – performing an improv show on a very tiny stage for youth and “people who were there for the vegan pear sandwich.” As the group has added to its numbers, and changed venues a couple of times, they’ve never deviated from their particular strain of high-energy improv comedy. “It’s a fun, safe place to be,” says Beil of the weekly shows. “It’s welcoming you into our collective imagination while we [mess] around with each other on stage in front of you.” They’ve racked up numerous Canadian Comedy award nominations in the process, and even had Nov. 18, 2011, proclaimed Sunday Service Day by Mayor Gregor Robertson. “We’re not really politically charged,” adds Howden, who joined the group in 2011 after moving out here from Toronto. “We don’t have a big agenda that we feel the need to push. We barely read the newspaper.” “We barely read,” clarifies Beil. Each Sunday Service member has their own distinctive comedy style, which Beil and Howden chose to explain using boy band terms. Read is “the cute one who’s also insane,” says Beil, and Howden describes Lee as “the strong boy” (“with good 4

reading retention,” adds Beil). Taz is “the 38-yearBEST COMEDY/ old who’s in a boy band and IMPROV GROUP smokes,” says Howden. “I’m kind of the Paul McCartney,” says Beil. “I’m the gentle genius with soft eyes. The Everyman.” “For the sake of the article, let’s just say that I said that,” says Howden. As for Howden: “I’m more of a Charlotte/Miranda/ Carrie,” says Howden, ditching the boy band analogy altogether. “Ooh! We forgot Emmett, who is our musical director. He’s like the Larry David of the boy band.” She pauses. “This isn’t helpful, is it?” The Sunday Service regularly shares the stage with visiting comics – like Paul F. Tompkins, Chris Locke, and DJ Demers – who “know that to come and do our show, you’re going to be guaranteed a full house with a great audience and a really fun vibe,” says Howden. Speaking of the full house and fun vibe: The Sunday Service has enjoyed plenty of both since moving their show to the Fox Cabaret in 2014. The two-hour improv extravaganza regularly attracts a mix of devotees and nervous newbies. “Every week, we poll the audience and say, ‘Who’s here for the first time?’ And it’s half the crowd that is trying this new show that they heard about from a friend,” says Howden. “So they’re taking a pretty big risk, and you can tell within the first five minutes when they figure out what the show is, that they’re having a good time.” The ticket price has remained the same since the beginning: the otherwise unheard-of low sum of $7. The Sunday Service is hard at work on a sizzle reel for a television series pitch, based on the improv show and also “a hyperbolized version of our lives where we’re playing ourselves but a bit more interesting and quirky for the television audiences,” says Beil. But that’s down the road. Until then, you can find The Sunday Service every Sunday at 9pm at the Fox Cabaret (2321 Main). –Sabrina Furminger

Red Cat Records It’s no secret that these are tough times for the music industry. CD sales have plummeted in favour of online streaming and torrenting, and music retail chains have been dropping like flies as a result. However, amidst this, Red Cats Records on Main Street has not only survived – it’s thrived, largely due to owners Dave Gowans and Lasse Lutick’s decision to shift their focus to vinyl sales. “When we started, it was 80/20 between CDs and vinyl,” says Lutick. “Now its 70 per cent vinyl.” Lutick and Gowans first met each other more than 20 years ago in a tree-planting camp in Northern BC, and went on to form the indie country-rock band, the Buttless Chaps. The pair were long-time employees at Red Cat when they had the opportunity to buy the store nearly 10 years ago from the original owners.

“It was definitely a dream of ours to have our own store someday,” says Lutick. “I think a lot of musicians have that dream.” For music fans that want something tangible, something substantial they can hold in their hands and display in their homes, vinyl is an ideal medium. However, the shift to vinyl has not been without its challenges. For one thing, records are a whole lot bigger than CDs, resulting in Red Cat having to upgrade their digs two times on the same block. But as Red Cat has grown, the store’s welcoming atmosphere has remained. “It’s a friendly store,” says Gowans. “It’s really comfortable and you’re not going to be judged by the records you buy. BEST WEST END HIDDEN GEM A greenhorn, by definition, is a newcomer – one who is inexperienced or naïve, unacquainted with local manners and customs. Walter Le Daca knows a thing or two about being the new kid in town; a native Argentinian, he arrived in Canada in the early ‘90s and some 20 years later, is now the owner and operator of Greenhorn Espresso Bar. With the idea in mind to recreate the café culture of home, Le Daca wanted Greenhorn to be about more than just coffee. Serving up Moja, a local roast from North Vancouver, Le Daca’s staff of 15 offers a brew to strike the perfect balance between coffee snobs and caffeine junkies alike. In the full-service kitchen, it’s all about an authentic, madeto-order experience with no pre-made, warmed up sandwiches but instead, homemade croissants, sandwiches laid upon freshly baked breads and the signature tortilla Espanola. “People had their doubts about me opening here,” he says gazing around the café on a rainy Vancouver morning. “But the West End is Vancouver’s most dense neighbourhood, an incredible melting pot, and really needed a spot like this.”

With its proximity to the tourism hubs of downtown, folks from all over the world have sipped espresso here, as do a faithful community of regulars. What sets Greenhorn apart from your average java joint, though, is back behind the bustle of the front end. A tiny window opens to the lush green alley, nestled in the curvature of a small listening booth Le Daca built to sample the sounds of his makeshift record shop – a hidden gem in itself. “Music to me, is very important,” he explains. “And here, coffee is not the centre. It’s about art and music, too. We have a vinyl ‘wish list’ and, usually, a turntable.” Greenhorn’s preservation of culture isn’t new either. The café’s name is a nod to the three Englishmen who, in 1862, bought over 500 hectares of the West End at an inflated price, earning them the nickname of naivete, “I’m not much of a businessman either,” Le Daca laughs. “This really is a passion project, but I’m so grateful for the people who come here – the West Enders.” –Kristyn Anthony Greenhorn Café • 994 Nicola • GreenhornCafe.com

Score on Davie When it comes to the Caesar game, no one comes close to Score on Davie. So it’s little wonder that the West End bar was this year’s winner for Best Sports Bar and finished third for Best West End Bar. Of course there’s the huge patio, awesome staff, and huge TVs to watch the game. But no trip to Score on Davie is complete without a legendary Checkmate Caesar. This diabolical culinary monstrosity is not for the weak of heart (or liver). “We got called out online,” floor manager Mitch MacDougall explains. “We had a line of specialty Caesars, and someone called us out saying their Caesar was bigger. “So this is our mic drop on the Caesar game.” Checkmate, indeed. Four ounces of vodka. An entire Cornish game hen. A

Score burger. A pulled pork slider. Half a dozen hot wings. Half a dozen onion rings. A hot dog stuffed with pulled pork and mac ‘n’ cheese. And to top it all off, a BEST SPORTS BAR brownie for dessert. “Substantial engineering goes into this,” says MacDougall. “It’s not easy to get this to the table without dropping it.” Cooking and assembling the Checkmate can take more than 20 minutes, so be patient. And make sure to bring a friend (or two): with four ounces of alcohol, the Checkmate is intended to be shared. Not surprisingly, the legend of the Checkmate has spread online, and many make the trip to Score on Davie just to challenge the world’s most ridiculous Caesar. “Lots of people visiting Vancouver for the first time will make us their first stop to try the Checkmate,” MacDougall says. What’s Up? Hot Dog! Hot dogs have long been held back by the ketchup mafia. Every once in a while, mustard and onions were allowed in on the action, but for the longest time the sweet red sauce ran the show. Enter Matt and Jenna Hagarty, husband and wife hot dog… connoisseurs? It certainly seems that way, with their 25-seat, punk rock hangout in Hastings-Sunrise offering nearly a dozen different versions of the classic dugout snack. You’ve got the best-selling Matt and She’s, a dog so loaded down with mac ’n’ cheese, bits of bacon and green onion that you need a fork to slay the beast; you’ve got the Reuben, a corned beef, swiss cheese and sauerkraut creation that can proudly call itself one of What’s Up? Hot Dog!’s original three; and you can’t forget the Hanzai, the pickled ginger, cucumber, wasabi and sriracha party that rolls with a tempura-and-black-sesame-seed entourage. They pickle their own onions, smoke their own pork, and all their dogs – made with all-natural Two Rivers beef or

Field Roast veggie – run from eight to 11 bucks. “We put a lot of time and work into the ingredients,” says Matt proudly from one of the red vinyl booths. “There’s no space cheese or anything on top.” So, it’s no surprise that within seven short months of opening, the couple, who also both play in local bands, now hold silver for Best Hot Dog in our Best of the City: Dining readers’ choice poll. They also won Best Cheap Eats, Best Diner/Greasy Spoon (city-wide AND East Side), and bronze for Best Burger. Not bad for a couple who didn’t really want to do a restaurant in the first place. “My goal wasn’t necessarily to create a restaurant,” admits Matt with a laugh. “Our food is really good and it’s gotten a lot better since we started, but my goal was just to create another place where we could hang out that wasn’t just a bar. “Vancouver is so saturated with sports bars and there’s a lot of places I love to go to see bands,” he continues, “but in between those two things I didn’t feel like there was a lot of spaces that had more than just drinking.” Matt adds that they want people in the neighbourhood to know it’s also a place to just come by with a laptop to work.
