Ugly Christmas Sweater Day They used to be the gift from Grandma that you dreaded — the handknit Christmas sweater. But thanks to Vancouverites Chris Boyd and Jordan Birch, you can wear them proudly. Their Now That’s Ugly Society has got Vancouver’s mayor to declare the third Friday of December as Ugly Christmas Sweater Day. On Dec. 20, people sporting an official UCSD button can get in to the Vancouver Christmas Market for free. The buttons are $5 each and can be purchased at UglySweaterDay.com or at the market. Proceeds go to the Children’s Wish Foundation. That night, the Commodore hosts the 12th Annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Day Party for 1,100 sweater wearers. Tickets are $37.50 at Ticketmaster. ca. Handel’s Messiah Hallelujah! You don’t have to be religious to marvel at the sheer power and beauty of Handel’s Messiah, a 270-yearold oratorio that never loses any of its vibrancy and joy. While the soloists can make the Biblical verses soar, it’s the combined energy of the chorus’s voices that give so much majesty to the retelling of Jesus Christ’s birth. And that will be amply evident on December 14 when the 130-voice Vancouver Bach Choir, accompanied by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, both under the direction of music director Leslie Dala (pictured), fills the Orpheum Theatre with some of the most beloved music of the season. Tickets are $25 to $59 and are available at VancouverBachChoir.com. Let the heavens rejoice! Karen Tregillis photo

All the lobby is a stage Refurbished York Theatre’s colourful façade creates drama on Commercial Drive By Martha Perkins

O

ld vaudeville theatres didn’t have lobbies because they didn’t need them — the shows were continual, with audience members coming and going as they pleased. Last Friday night, when temperatures dipped south of zero, the hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the relaunch of the York Theatre were grateful that architect Gregory Henriquez had somehow managed to create a lobby where only sidewalk had been when the theatre had been built in 1913. As some of the players in Vancouver’s arts scene — Mayor Gregor Robertson, financier Bruno Wall, Bard on the Beach’s Christopher Gaze, the Arts Club’s Bill Millerd — mingled in the long, narrow foyer of the former vaudeville theatre, passersby on Commercial Drive could peer through

the large windows and create their own stories about all those characters standing about in the lobby. It’s exactly what Henriquez imagined. He draped the new exterior glass wall in red tiles to represent the red curtains of a vaudeville stage. The inside walls are a mosaic of rectangular glass tiles made by Burnaby’s Interstyle Glass + Ceramic, creating the shimmering mirage of a colourful stage backdrop. The project was spearheaded by the late Vancouver politician Jim Green. “This renovation,” Bruno Wall said Friday night, “started very innocently when Jim Green phoned and said, ‘You need to buy the York Theatre.’ I got on the phone with my uncle Peter who said, ‘Go figure it out and make it happen.’” Gregor Robertson was also on Green’s speed dial. “Jim came to see me,” the mayor recounted at the opening night reception. “He said, ‘We have to make the York Theatre happen.’” Arts and community groups had long been adding their voices to the chorus and, $13 million and more years than anyone wanted to admit later, the theatre was finally

When architect Gregory Henriquez designed a lobby at the front of York Theatre, he wanted to create a sense that the lobby itself was like a stage, and audience members were players on it for the enjoyment of Commercial Drive passersby. Martha Perkins photo ready to regain its beloved status on The Drive. “Jim Green believed culture is for everybody. This building is a legacy to him,” Henriquez said. The York Theatre will be a theatre and rental facility operated by The Cultch. Until December 29, audiences are invited to celebrate the holidays with Jack and the

Beanstalk: An East Van Panto with words by Charles Demers (CBC’s Debaters, Vancouver Special), music by Veda Hille (Do You Want What I Have Got? paleo traveller for the _______________ Metal, glass or ceramic food storage containers are a great holiday gift for a paleo friend. We recommend these over plastic because they are more durable and do not leak chemicals into your food. Lunchbots is our hands down winner for food storage containers. Metal is used on the contact surfaces to avoid leaching. They also offer insulated containers for hot food storage.

Friends Dillon Zolnierczyk and Cameron MacDougall have been leading a paleolithic lifestyle for more than a year, and work with suppliers such as Windsor Meats to bring it across BC. They suggest gifts for people looking to kick off the old-school eating style. Lou Lou Childs photo modern technology. It should be one of the first tools in any primal kitchen, as making multiple meals at one time is a huge benefit for anyone living the paleo lifestyle. Entry level models start at around $25. Crock-Pot is the brand that sits atop our list; these guys have been making them since they were invented. Cuisinart, Black and Decker and Hamilton Beach also offer great options that start under $30 and can go up to $200.

One of the best modern cooking mediums to bring your meats — whether a grass-fed filet minion or a

wild-caught pacific salmon — to a perfect temperature is the cast iron pan. A properly cared for pan will develop a nonstick surface that perfectly sears meat to lock in juices. Look around at garage sales or ask your grandmother if she has an extra one lying around before going out and purchasing one. These things will usually outlive their owner and can stay in a family for many generations, carrying with them the history of every meal. If you do have to buy new then we recommend Lodge.

rossfit athletes Dillon Zolnierczyk and Cameron MacDougall believe in a simpler era, and founded the Barons of Beef, in partnership with handpicked meat suppliers, to bring a simpler style of eating to communities across BC. Called the paleo diet (you might know it as caveman, anti-inflammatory or elimination), it utilizes evolutionary clues left by our ancestors to optimize health. A key aspect of the paleo diet is to select meals filled with whole and unprocessed foods whenever possible. This is becoming increasingly difficult, however, for the modern caveman or cavewoman while foraging for meals outside of their homes. Thus the modern-day paleo must opt to cook more of their meals at home. The following items are their gift ideas for someone trying to embrace a more traditional paleolithic lifestyle:

Cooking over an open flame is about as primal as it gets. When selecting the perfect BBQ for a friend or loved one, be sure to make the following considerations. • Charcoal vs gas grill: Users of charcoal swear by its superior flavor. However it is much more labour-intensive than gas and some apartment buildings don’t allow charcoal BBQs due to safety concerns. • Tabletop or free-standing: When buying a BBQ as a gift, make sure you understand the space available. An added benefit of tabletop BBQs is that they can be transported for use at the beaches and parks. • Steel vs cast iron grates: Whenever possible, opt for cast iron grates; they trap and distribute heat more evenly over the entire grilling surface, leaving you with a far superior end product. We like this Weber Q 100 Gas Portable BBQ available at Home Depot for $159.99.

s a firm believer that, through steady practice and devotion, all people — regardless of age, gender, race or religion — can experience the “Oneness of Yoga,” Ryan Leier has focused on making it accessible for everybody. His donation-based yoga studio, One Yoga for the People, offers the support of yoga in times of plenty and in times of need. The Wanderlust instructor also founded Vinyasa Yoga for Youth, an innovative non-profit organiza-

tion designed to meet the physical, mental and spiritual needs of youth ages three to 23. Although the yogi isn’t supposed to want or need anything; Leier offers suggestions that will spread some love this Christmas: • A pass to the Float House (70 W. Cordova) is a great way to recharge and tune out distractions while tuning into yourself. • Local beeswax candles are always a favourite. • The Manduka Black Mat (available at OneYoga.ca) is

my mat of choice. It is a little thicker and heavier than most mats, but is also more comfortable, more stable and less slippery. • Books: The Essential Rumi by Coleman Barks is illuminating and entertaining and Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse is a must for any seeker. • Arcade Fire’s Reflektor is the best album of the year! Dance with a tear in your eye. • Also, any yoga nerd will love the movies Enlighten Up or I Am.

rossFit is a style of strength and conditioning exercise, sometimes described as gymnasticsmeets-Olympic-lifting, that was created by former gymnast Greg Glassman in the ‘70s. It emphasizes muscular strength, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility, and workouts offer a mix of exercises that don’t require treadmills or other equipment. It also happens to be the fastest growing fitness phenomenon worldwide. Vancouver stylist and CrossFit athlete Wendy Keown crowdsourced this list of gift ideas from the members of her CrossFit class: • Jump rope; RX brand is a must. • PR wrist straps, for heavy

overhead lifts and handstand push-ups. • Olympic lifting shoes; any are great. • Weight lifting belt. I prefer the non-leather Velcro option as it adjusts to any size, with tight support; a material one may fit more snugly than leather. • Rings. This is the Mecca of gifts. Rings will help to practise ring dips, ring rows, and their first muscle-up. • Gym tape, or KT tape, which will help recovery, support for injuries, and tears in their hands. Other ideas include their own kettle bell for home or knee-high socks to keep from skinning their shins.

en Rustemeyer is an independent writer and film producer by night and an analyst for a green building non-profit by day. She is a dedicated recycler, zero-waster and community-builder who produced The Clean Bin Project (CleanBinMovie.com), a multiple award-winning documentary film and blog about a year-long competition to live waste free. She recently spent six months living off discarded/rescued food as part of a forthcoming documentary on food waste called Just Eat It (FoodWasteMovie.com). The following are her gift ideas for someone trying to embrace an eco-friendly or even zero-waste lifestyle.

ECO BATHROOM KIT My bathroom staples are a wooden toothbrush, refillable tooth soap and lotion, package-free bar soap, and a safety razor. Once hard to find, these quality items are making a comeback, and your friends will think you’re straight out of Mad Men. Look for them at The Soap Dispensary (3623 Main) for $2-$100, depending on what you get.

FOOD Wallets $90-110 50% OFF with purchase of any bag.

Who doesn’t love homemade goodies? One of my favourite all-time gifts was a “cookie of the month” tin from my Mom that I returned each month to be refilled with a new kind of cookie. That was

12 months of deliciousness in one gift! Make the cookies yourself or check out Vancouver Farmers Markets (they also have gift tokens); $10-50.

METAL OR GLASS STORAGE CONTAINER I was gifted a really good quality metal lunch container, and I take it everywhere. Look for these at the Tiffin Project or Life Without Plastic; $25. Throw in a gift certificate for a local eatery (like one of the Tiffin Project partners) and a set of bamboo cutlery, and you have the perfect, reusable gift that can be appreciated every day.

EXPERIENCES Gift certificates for massage, a sports game, cooking classes, the Museum of Vancouver, Science World, or a concert are something that the whole family can enjoy. They take up zero closet space and are one of my favourite things to get and give. If possible, I try to book an actual date and time to make sure it gets used.

MAKE YOUR OWN SOAP KIT This is for those who are the DIY type and love making things from scratch. Making your own soap is not as hard as it sounds, and it’s a great way to avoid the packaging and the toxins found in many commercial soap bars. Available at Homesteader’s Emporium (649 E. Hastings); $70.

Gifts that make you Feel Good

W

hen you ask Krista and Sara Rose McKenna for five gift ideas, they deliver 10. Not only is that indicative of their passion for going above and beyond, but it also fits well with their topic of expertise: Gifts that give more. Co-founders of Social City Networking INC, Get Warm Project, and Team Awesome. these identical twins and superhumans are all about positively engaging their community with businesses and events. Here are their suggestions for ways to give that have a warm and fuzzy ripple effect.

STOCKING STUFFERS: Inside every black LUSH Charity Pot is a whole lot more than creamy body lotion. Of course it’s filled with the finest ingredients, including fair trade organic cocoa butter, and made by hand with love. But what makes it so special? Every penny that you pay for a pot, excluding the tax, goes to fund and support grassroots charities all around the world; $5.95-$22.95. Kiva is a person-to-person microloan site where you can lend money (starting at

WEVancouver.com

$25) to real entrepreneurs in need of funding throughout the developing world. Kiva Gift Cards give your family and friends the opportunity to choose which borrowers they want to support. When you purchase Body Shop’s Dragon Fruit Lip Butter (our favorite!), 100 per cent of the profits go to charity; $3. Save On Meats Food Token program, providing hot meals to the hungry, aligns 100 per cent with our community initiatives. Social City Networking co-founded a local social initiative called the Get Warm Project, and last year partnered with Save On Meats. They were wonderful in their support, and donated 100 food tokens for us to give out with our Get Warm outreach bundles. Available for purchase online and at the store, the $2.25 meal tokens can be redeemed for a nutritious hot breakfast sandwich at the sandwich window (7am-4pm) or in the diner (7am-10pm). People can choose to distribute them directly, or purchase the tokens and have Save on Meats give them to one of dozens of community partners to share amongst

their organization.

UNDER THE TREE: We work directly with the VivedU.org team, and highly recommend their website as a source of holiday gifts. VivedU.org creates scholarships for Canadian students by implementing an automatic donation with every purchase made from their online store. Not only are they providing students financial support with scholarships, but they’re also providing access to incredible deals on quality brands such as Sitka, IceBreaker, Metal Mulisha, The Berrics, and more. For each peaceBOMB piece of jewelry sold, Project peaceBOMB donates the equivalent of the cost of clearing 1 to 15 square metres of land in Laos of unexploded ordinances. Krista’s favourite: The Peace Ribbon Sterling Silver Bangle. Sara’s favourite: PeaceBomb Arrow Bracelet Set and the Let’s Spoon Necklace. We love Lüt Boutique, a space that supports local and emerging designers and artists as well as national and international brands with unique visions. Lüt Boutique has been an active supporter

and contributor to the Get Warm Project since day one. From Lüt, we suggest Ten Tree Apparel: purchase a product and they plant 10 trees. Ladies’ – Ten Tree Breeze Hoodie or The Hippie Tree. Men’s – Ten Tree Nightlife Hoodie or Ten Tree Live Unbound T-Shirt. We also support the Pacific Wild Organization because the founders are West Coast natives through and through. Nothing beats the beauty of the environment we live in, and keeping our coastline safe and protected is their priority. Donations are always welcome, but Pacific Wild products (books, cards, DVDs) make great gifts that spread their message.

CHARITIES TO SUPPORT: The Get Warm Project is a community blanket and goods drive that strives to ensure that members of our city will be warm this winter. Members of the community, such as Lüt, are hosting ‘Get Warm Project’ donation boxes. All donations will dropped off at Union Gospel Mission. We are asking to fill the boxes with new or gently used warm clothes, blankets, and quality essential items

Sara Rose and Krista McKenna, co-founders of the Get Warm Project, make it easy to give back this holiday season. Rob Newell photo such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste, quality razors, winter boots, etc. We support Beauty Night Society because we strongly believe in the impact wellness can have on changing someone’s life. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect, dig-

nity and support — regardless of their situation. We also love YWCA for their three “Sponsor a Family” programs that offer assistance and support to families in need during the holiday season.

Gifts for the Sweet Tooth

By Anya Levykh

I

t’s week two of my foodfocused gift round-up, and this week, it’s all about the sweet surprise, the delectable dessert, the tasty treat, the — well, you get the picture. Here are five sweet gifts that will make the food enthusiast in your life drool with delight.

YEW STÖLLEN Former Four Seasons executive chef (and master baker) Gerhard Weitzel has been retired for years, but he does don the apron once each year in order to put out just over 1,000 of these unique Christmas cakes. Raisins, sugar, and a creamy marzipan centre make this one holiday loaf that is guaranteed not to stick around long enough to get stale. $22 at YewSeafood.com.

BETA 5 EDIBLE SCULPTURES

BEAUCOUP BAKERY COOKIES

Think of it as a modern take on the candy-filled chocolate Santa. The Santa hat ($40), snowman ($75) and fir tree ($50) are each made from 64 per cent dark chocolate. They’re filled with an assortment of pebbles, like the chocolate-covered Marcona almonds, caramelized Fraser Valley hazelnuts and sun-dried Okanagan cherries, as well as peanut butter pretzels, and are edible from top to bottom. Beta5Chocolates.com

Can’t have Christmas without cookies, right? This year, Beaucoup Bakery has taken the classic financier, and given it a candied ginger twist. $6 for a bag of three makes for a lovely little stocking stuffer, or try a bag of the mini peanut butter sandwich cookies ($8). Small gifts with big flavours make for happy holiday cheer! BeaucoupBakery.com

GANACHE PATISSERIE BÛCHE DE NOËL The only log-like thing about this cake is the shape. Peter Fong, owner and pâtissier at Ganache in Yaletown, specializes in decadent French desserts with exotic flavours. The Bûche Chocolat Caramel Passion is a pavéstyle cake made up of multiple layers of brownie biscuit, caramel crunch, salted caramel ganache, 70 per cent dark chocolate-caramel mousse and flourless chocolate biscuit, with a centre of passionfruit mousseline and vanilla guimauve. Available in 6” ($34.95) and 12” ($54.95) sizes. GanacheYaletown.com

LUCKY’S DOUGHNUTS/49TH PARALLEL COFFEE For the holiday season, 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters have released their Holiday Celebration Blend ($20/lb), a Honduras roast with intense fragrances of honey and spice, and a flavour-profile of caramel apple, cherry and hazelnut. Pair it with Lucky’s stöllen Bismarck with marzipan pastry cream and spiced fruit dough, or the gingerbread old-fashioned topped with white chocolate ganache, candied orange peel, ginger and cranberries. Coffee is also available in gift sets starting at $33. LuckysDoughnuts.com | 49thParallelRoasters.com

Gifts for the Photographer

V

ancouver photographer Lindsay Elliott’s CV reads like an arts and culture retrospective on the city. The girl who shoots for everyone from the Cheaper Show to Vice to Aveda offers these gift ideas for the photographer: • Renting new gear is one of the best ways to get excited about photography, gain confidence through experimentation and figure out what you might like to buy in the future. Flashpoint (171 W. 3rd) offers gift certificates in $25 denominations that can be used rent lenses, strobes, flashes, backdrops and pretty much anything else you’ll need to experiment without spending huge amounts of money. The crew at Flashpoint is also ridiculously knowledgable, friendly and clearly have a passion for the business. • I’ve always struggled with proper colour correction but the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport makes it virtually impossible to mess it up. The card is a checkerboard of 24 squares in a range of colours that represent natural objects (skin/sky/trees), which reflects light properly and gives you an Adobe DNG RAW profile to match your images to. On the other side you’ve also got a handy, tiny grey card for your camera bag. Available at B&H photo and most professional camera stores in Vancouver, such as Kerrisdale, Beau and Leo’s; $89. • Every photographer needs to own a reflector. The Interfit is great because not only do you get silver and white, but also soft sun (gold), black and a 1/2-stop translucent defuser. The defuser will save the day if you’re shooting in harsh sunlight and the stand + arm comes in handy if you shoot alone (bring a sand bag on windy days!). Interfit Photographic INT273 5-in-1 reflector kit (42”) with arm + stand; $129; Kerrisdale Cameras. • It feels like everyone owns the Canon “Nifty 50” and has been frustrated at some point by some of its quirks and limitations. Canon’s new(ish) 40mm F2.8 Pancake lens corrects so many of the issues I

Building relationships one room at a time!

Lindsay Elliott. Self portrait had with the 50mm. It’s 64mm on a cropped sensor, semi-wide angle coverage on a full frame, no more plastic mount, sharp as a tack, and not much bigger than a lens cap. This is a great, cheap lens to add to a collection or as a first lens to add to a camera+lens kit. $209.99; Broadway Camera. • I really miss having albums full of images. When I discovered the 4x6 Canon Selphy CP900 photo printer last week I was completely sold on the quality and price (photos are about $0.39 each to produce). You can purchase refill packs at Staples for $42.96 and they come with paper and ink for 108 images. You can also wirelessly print jpegs from your iPhone or Android. The printer could handle a party photobooth and it prints your Instagrams to send to grandma. Starting at $89.99; Amazon, London Drugs.

FOOD

Gaming sessions can last for hours, and the most successful gamers eat strategically. They’re not contending with complicated fare like spaghetti; they’re consuming manageable food that’ll fill their bellies while also kicking their energy up to the next level — food like Awake Caffeinated Chocolates, a made-in-Canada, super-charged treat that’ll keep players in the game. Safeway, Shoppers.

HEALTH & WELLNESS Gaming can be hard on the body, especially those parts responsible for operating the all-powerful controller. Soothe tired arms, shoulders and hands with the locally produced Be Soothed Muscle Balm (and consider throwing in a gift certificate for a massage). $24; Spruce Body Lab.

INSPIRATION Consider giving the gamers on your list a selection of movies that delve into the art of gaming: classics like War Games, The Wizard, and Tron — and the 2011 Disney animated flick Wreck-It Ralph, in which the titular character (a protagonist in a videogame) grows tired of his own game, jumps into others, and then — sorry, no spoilers. orn, raised, and still residing in Vancouver, Daniel Kalla spends his days (and sometimes nights) working as an emergency room physician. In his “off” time, though, he is the author of eight books, two of which have been optioned for feature films. As a reader, writer and many other things, he thinks these gift ideas will please the book lover on your list: • An e-reader will never replace the tactile joy of holding an actual

book, but it sure is a convenient way to take a story with you on a trip. Kobo Touch Black. $79; Chapters. • On those cold winter nights, why not curl up with a great new Canadian novel? The Orenda by Joseph Boyden is a bleak, raw and beautifully told story set at a pivotal point in the nation’s nascent history. Not recommended for the faint of heart, though. $32 at your local independent book store. • Every writer — even ones who

A Good Book Drive allows you to donate a book online to the Frontier College Waiting Room Literacy Pilot Project. A few of my favourites from those halcyon evenings spent reading to my own kids? Love You Forever (Robert

Learn more at AGoodBookDrive.com. • Help save your marriage with the LED Ultra Bright Booklight, a little clip-on reading lamp that provides great illumination for your book, without lighting up the whole bedroom! For those of us who like to read a little later than our partners, this is just one of many LED options in this category. $12.99; Chapters-Indigo.

rant/rave Brought to you by:

Santa’s naughty I was recently coming home from playing Santa Claus at a friend’s brunch. Still dressed as the big guy, I was driving over the Burrard Bridge and saw a crap load of broken glass in the bike lane. As Santa is a cyclist first and foremost, I looped back and put the hazard lights on to clean up. People saw the hazard lights quickly and merged with little issue — I agree it wasn’t the best place to stop, but I was careful and it got people smiling. Well, most people were smiling. A guy from the other side of the six lanes was screaming at me and freaking out as either a) I was slowing traffic; or b) he thought I was taking his bottles. I ignored him for a bit, but he just got so annoying so I gave him the “finger” and screamed “f-off”! So here is Santa giving this guy the finger as kids are coming by shouting “Hi Santa!” out the window. I told him off only once but it was “Hi Kids!” followed by a “F- You!”. Don’t worry, no kids actually saw Santa having it out. Have a great holiday, Santa

Hit # for complaint I’m in my 70s and want to get a points card at my West End grocery store. I don’t have email or a com-

puter so I was given a phone number to call. Last night I went through 20 minutes of bullshit on the phone and in the end, I was told to do the application online. It’s like, “We value your business and screw you very much.” It really bothers me that people who aren’t computer savvy are being cut out of the loop. Clarence Sinclair

We named our youngest son after Nelson Mandela and other heroic men. He is Nicholas (after the patron saint of children) Andrei (after Andrei Sakarov) David (after Henry David Thoreau) Nelson. His only complaint is that his name is too long to get on a driver’s licence. In 1981, I was teaching in New Zealand when the South African Springbok Rugby Team came to play the All Blacks. Theretofore I knew very little about apartheid and attendant issues. I got an education in a hurry. I ended up very much involved in the protest movement as I came to understand that a boycott of sports was a strong weapon against the oppression of apartheid. We feel greatly privileged to be part of this history and to know something of this great man. We hope our son will emulate Mandela’s works in some small ways. After graduation Nick plans to go to the Philippines to work in restoration following the recent disaster there. That will be a good start. Gary Pennington

Local Food & Drink Happenings

THE DISH For those heading up to Whistler for fresh powder, fuelling pre- and postski is essential — not to mention a good excuse to indulge. Westin Resort and Spa, Whistler’s newly opened Grill & Vine has some hearty and delicious options, such as the starter of crispy quail with multi-grain waffle and maple-glazed grapes ($15) or the burrata and North Arms Farms beet salad, with crispy and raw beets, ver jus dressing and candied hazelnuts. Executive chef Bradley Cummings has created a menu that focuses on modern interpretations of classic grill favourites, like the sea scallop and bone marrow risotto, with its monstrous bone luge, Sakura Farms pork duo, and wild boar lasagna, as well as classic Napoletana pizzas from the Wood Stone oven and a few childhood favourites. Chorizo tater tots were creamy, salty and addictive, as was the black truffle mac ‘n’ cheese (no truffle oil here, just the real thing). The restaurant also has an Enomatic system installed, meaning a rotating selection of 16 wines by the glass on offer. GrillandVineWhistler.com

ver the last couple weeks I have made Cookie Monster look like an amateur. Cookies are not even my favourite category of dessert, but it’s easy to make room for them. Calling them “biscuits” makes me feel less guilty about it, too, although who am I kidding? I never really feel guilty unless I eat 10 in one sitting. Here are 10 stand-out holiday cookies, and many are even available throughout the year. They aren’t necessarily “the best”, because we all know how I feel about “the best” anything, but they are 10 that I wouldn’t mind having all at once.

10 Holiday Cookies (in no particular order) Holiday Spiced Whipped Shortbread from Bel Café — Pastry Chef Wayne Kozniko killed his shortbread from last year with his new and improved version. The addition of rice flour and confectioner’s sugar always gives shortbread a melt-inyour-mouth consistency, and whipping the batter makes it extra light. Buttery flavour, hint of vanilla, and soft and tender texture makes it my favourite new shortbread this season. Santa’s Milk & Cookies and Vin de Noix Macarons from Soirette Macaron & Tea — Pastry chef Shobna Kannusamy’s Santa’s Milk & Cookies macaron comes with an unexpected homemade, egg-free cookie dough in the centre, and her Vin de Noix macaron is filled with a dark chocolate ganache infused with Vista D’oro Farms & Winery’s flagship fortified walnut wine. Both are exclusive to her holiday collection of macarons. Ginger Chocolate Cookies from Kitchening & Co. — Carly Wintschel specializes in macarons, but I actually prefer her new ginger chocolate cookies now. They’re soft and chewy, not too sweet, and made with freshly grated ginger, cocoa and chocolate.

Vancouver’s favourite breakfast destination for over 10 years.

Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies from Beaucoup Bakery — Jackie Kai-Ellis opened her store with these and it was an instant favourite. It’s rich, sweet, and decadent, and it will make you question the other ones in the city. She offers them in a mini stocking stuffer size this year, too. Polvoron from Goldilocks — It’s a Spanish-style shortbread cookie and they’re available all year at Goldilocks, a Filipino bakery. The cookie itself is almost creamy, but the Pinipig Polvoron has Rice Crispies in it for contrasting texture. It’s my favourite kind of polvoron.

Gorgonzola & Pistachio Shortbread from Coach House Shortbread Company — It’s based in Toronto, but you can order them online. They are a shortbread pioneer in shortbread and one of my all-time favourites. Their savoury collection is hard to beat. Parmesan & Rosemary Shortbread from PÉCHÉ MIGNON — If you’d rather buy local, then this allnatural sweet and savoury artisan shortbread is also very good. Chocolate Sparkle Cookies from Thomas Haas — It’s nothing new, but a classic. The recipe is online, or you can buy them in cookie dough form and bake them at home. Made with ground almonds and chocolate, this rich cookie is gluten free. Okinawa Matcha Shortbread from Cake-Ya — It is a quaint little Japanese bakery with to-go items in Port Moody. Their matcha shortbread is like biting into a sandcastle in a very good way. I need to do a back-to-back comparison with Bel Café’s, the texture was similar. Gluten Free Marzipan Ginger Cookies from Chef Kev — You’ll find Pastry Chef Kev at various Christmas Markets in Vancouver. These soft, moist and tender cookies and made with ground almonds, fresh candied ginger and a bit of ginger powder. It’s my favourite from his cookie collection. Meinhardt’s new look By Martha Perkins

einhardt Fine Food has long been a destination for Europeans looking for a taste of home and travellers who want to revisit culinary adventures. But just as we can’t live in our past, a retail store can’t stay there either. Meinhardt’s recently underwent a renovation and facelift that show off enhanced frozen and on-the-go hot sections, gourmet gluten-free options and rejigged v-shaped checkout area that makes waiting in line more convivial. Last Wednesday, general manager Michael Meinhardt, whose mother Linda founded the store 18 years ago, also unveiled an array of new Meinhardt Artisan Collection products. They include caramelized pineapple frozen yogurt, cheese palmiers and twists, an porcini and asiago frozen pasta. “We need to give the customer a reason for coming here,” he says of his quest to search out the best products from around the world. “We like to think of ourselves as purveyors of culinary discoveries.”

ain Hill dips his finger into the clear liquid that is burbling in a cup attached to the huge brass still at the Yaletown Distilling Company. The company’s longtime head brewer and neophyte head distiller pauses as he absorbs the full impact of the gin’s flavours, noting the strong hints of juniper berries, coriander and bitter almonds. The flavours are intense because there’s a bit more distilling to go before the gin is bottled and sold at the distillery’s bar on Hamilton Street, but the promise of good things to come is definitely there. While gin drinkers are accustomed to a distiller’s penchant for tinkering with flavours — Hill wants to introduce lavender and bitter orange peel — Hill also knows his vodka might take a bit of getting used to. “Personally, I like it as a sipping vodka, which is why it does have more flavour,” he says of his version. “But we’ll probably end up with a couple of different vodkas.” Shaun Layton is the bar manager at L’Abattoir but he’s been working with the Mark James Group — which includes the distillery, sister restaurant and lounge, the neighbouring craft beer company and liquor store — to come up with some signature cocktails. He too likes the stronger taste of Hill’s vodka. “This reminded me of Polish vodka because it actually tasted like something,” Layton said during a recent media tour at the distillery. “Most don’t have much personality” because they are distilled so many times.

Yaletown Distilling Company head distiller Iain Hill toasts the new venture with a Vesper Martini created by L’Abattoir’s Shaun Layton. Martha Perkins photo Layton’s created a vodka version of the French 75 with citrus, sugar and sparkling wine as well as introduced his take on the Vesper Martini, which James Bond drinks in Casino Royale, using vodka, gin and Cocchi Americano. Yaletown’s vodka might take a bit of getting used to for some cocktail drinkers but Fraser Boyer, the director of operations for the Mark James Group, believes that Vancouverites’ palates are ready. “The gin is a runaway success; the vodka you have to explain,” he said. “We’re having the same challenge with the vodka that we had with IPA 19 years ago.” In December 1994, Yaletown Brewing Co. opened its doors and one of its first offerings was an India Pale Ale. No one bought it. Then the craft beer revolution happened and Yaletown’s IPA is one of its most popular offerings.

FINE DINING

The new distillery is part of the recent artisan spirits revolution, joining Long Table Distillery, Odd Society Spirits and Liberty Distillery in Vancouver. Yaletown Distilling Company creted the first tasting bar and is back-to-back with Paulie’s Kitchen and The Distillery Bar. Just as you can sit in Yaletown Brewing Company and look through a window at the brewery chugging away, people sipping cocktails at the bar can have a view of the distillery. Hill has lots of ideas for other spirits, including a pear eau de vie. In his first experimental batch, it took 2,400 pounds of Bartlett pears to make about 80 litres of saleable spirits so he’ll finetune his recipe.... Meanwhile, his vodka and gin will be available at some BC Liquor Stores as well as the Yaletown Liquor Store and the distillery.

Lini 910 Labrusca Lambrusco Rosso NV | Italy | $19.99 | BC Liquor Stores Jess Bryans, the wine buyer for the Joey restaurant chain, has an adventurous palate that I’ve long admired. It comes as no shock to me that she shook things up a little bit by going with this gem of a sparkling red. “I chose this Lambrusco because to me it has all the makings of a treat for the holidays. It’s bubbly and festive, but also has that ripe berry character you’d find in a hearty red. Lively on the palate with refreshing acidity and flavours of raspberry, blueberry and black cherry, it’s perfect for sitting by the fire,

ho wouldn’t dream of waking up to these pancakes with caramel sauce on Christmas morning? Mary MacKay, the chief baker and co-owner of Terra Breads, has created this wonderful way to combine pancakes and granola and top it all off with some of her salted caramel sauce and yogurt. How many more sleeps until Christmas morning? Buttermilk Pancakes with Terra Breads Granola and Granny Smith Apples Makes about 10 pancakes

1 cup all-purpose flour 1 tbsp. sugar 1-1/4 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. baking soda 1/4 tsp. sea salt 1 cup buttermilk 1 large egg 1-1/2 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted and cooled 3/4 cup Terra Breads Granola 1 Granny Smith Apple, peeled, cored and grated

Valle dell’Acate 2011 Frappato Vittoria | Italy | $24.99 | BC Liquor Stores Brooke Delves, wine director at Wildebeest, is also prone to venture off the beaten path to find wines that suit Wildebeest’s playful, carnivorous fare. “Whether you’re decorating the tree or needing something to pair with a traditional turkey feast, this light-bodied, gulpable red should suit any holiday occasion. Full of ripe strawberries, cherries, mint and orange blossom, it’s so delicious that this isn’t just a recommendation, but a wine that I’m really bringing to my family Christmas dinner!” Vale do Bomfim 2011 Reserva | Portugal | $19.99 | BC Liquor Stores Emily Walker is currently on maternity leave from her position as the sommelier at the Four Seasons Hotel but, as someone who doesn’t idle well, she still comes in a couple days a week to run her wine program — now with baby in tow. “From the famed Port house of Dow’s, this tasty Portuguese red is packed with cozy

and festive flavours of currants, baking spice and licorice, plus savoury notes of black olives and mineral. It will make for a worthy guest at your dinner table, pairing nicely with a variety of traditional holiday dishes such as baked ham, candied yams and Grandma’s famous stuffing!” Château Rousselle 2009 Côtes de Bourg | France $29.99 | Liberty Wine Merchants/Private Stores Tyler Dawson runs the Park Royal location of Liberty Wine Merchants while Tweeting a slew of deals, tasting notes and more, over at @TyTheWineGuy. In a nod to many Bordeaux wines being ultra-expensive and the fantastic values being tough to find, he shares that, “This blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Cabernet Franc is a delicious reason this Christmas to believe (in Bordeaux) again. There’s supple fruit, plump plums, classic Bourgeois dirt, and the label even looks like Christmas!” Gonzalez Byass Pedro Ximenez Dulce Nectar Spain | $29.99 | BC Liquor Stores Bryant Mao, the Hawksworth Restaurant wine director, is ensuring that he’s saving room for dessert this year with a little something that should warm you up quite nicely. “This intensely sweet Sherry is Christmas pudding in a glass! With plenty of warm flavours including raisins, dark chocolate and toffee with cinnamon and nutmeg, it’s great poured over ice cream, too!”

Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk the buttermilk eggs and melted butter. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir gently until the wet and dry ingredients are just combined. Fold in Terra Breads granola and grated apple; batter should appear slightly lumpy. Let the batter rest for 10 minutes while heating griddle or skillet.

Heat a griddle or a large skillet over medium heat. Lightly oil the griddle. Pour 1/4 cup of the batter onto the griddle for each pancake, space about 1 inch apart. Let cook until bubbles rise to the surface and the edges look dry, 1 to 2 minutes. Flip the pancakes over and cook until the second side is nicely browned, about 1 minute more. Pancakes can be served immediately or held in a 200°F oven until ready to serve. Top warm pancakes with plain yogurt and Terra Breads Salted Caramel Sauce.

Computer literacy is a great skillset, no matter your age or stage in life. And while using the Internet is an invaluable tool, it can also be a slower and more involved process for older people just familiarizing themselves with all the nuances of online communication. This makes them relatively easy targets for automated online scams. Being isolated at home without computer support or knowing who to ask for help can be daunting.

Common scams come from ‘pop-up’ windows simulating virus-scanning software that can trick the untrained viewer into downloading a fake anti-virus program (at a substantial cost). Email messages can be equally as sly, appearing to come from a legitimate company or institution, asking the recipient to “update” or “verify” their personal information. They may ask for passwords, account numbers, billing history or other personal details.

A less savvy computer user may not know they should never submit personal information when it comes from a source that is initiating the contact. No one should have to provide personal information online.

Having assistance and training on hand can make a dramatic difference in your level of safety. Unhappy holidays Not everyone feels this is a time of joy-filled family celebrations. Here are some ways you can reach out to those in need By Glen Truax

Middle Earth, middle story: Smaug paves the way for Hobbit’s grand finale.

Smaug better, but bloated THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

Starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen Directed by Peter Jackson After a muddled and meandering start with his first Hobbit installment, director Peter Jackson returns in fine form with The Desolation of Smaug and reminds audiences why we fell in love with Middle Earth in the first place. That being said, the film still feels bloated and sags considerably at the halfway mark. Picking up, after a short flashback, almost immediately following the events of An Unexpected Journey, Bilbo (Martin Freeman), Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and their band of not so merry dwarves are on the run from the vicious Azog and his fearsome pack of Orcs. The group soon enlists the help of a shape-shifting bear named Beorn (one of the

film’s brief highlights), gets caught by some suspicious Wood-elves (including familiar face Orlando Bloom as Legolas) and eventually reaches the human settlement of Lake-town as they draw ever closer to the Lonely Mountain and its fire breathing inhabitant, Smaug the dragon. The action scenes in the first hour of the film are breathlessly paced and, for the most part, brilliantly executed; the Thor river rapids barrel sequence is jawDiakow dropping and makes for one of the most compelling parts in Jackson’s films. Many of the characters have more room to grow now that overlong dinner introductions are no longer needed. However, The Desolation of Smaug inevitably becomes a chore to sit through as the filmmaker’s excessive padding becomes obvious; still, there are magic and thrills to behold that certainly pave the way for an epic finale.

T

he holiday season is supposed to be a time to bask in the warmth of human companionship but not everyone will feel included. With Vancouver expecting a long, cold winter, any kind of aid is needed to help those who may be experiencing unhappy holidays. Our own apathy may get in the way — according to survey info collected by the Vancouver Foundation, a solid 27 per cent of interviewees felt that no matter what they did, it would not make a difference. And the city doesn’t seem to support community involvement either. A majority of young people between 25 and 35 years old feel alienated and lonely around this time of year. So what can we do to reach out to our neighbours? A number of organizations are making a difference, and they invite people to get involved. Union Gospel Mission on East Hastings provides food, shelter, and addictions services. They’re expecting a surge of people looking for vacancy this winter, and they plan to “open every nook and cranny for sleeping space,” according to Union Gospel’s president, Bill Mollard. The mission recognizes that loneliness is a big concern during this time of year, and they provide bus fare and long distance phone calls for residents who are far away from their families. “A sense of community is developed around this time of year,” added Mollard.

Every Christmas, the staff at Glowbal Group cook and serve a meal for 2,000 people at Union Gospel Mission. In this photo are Bill Mollard, Union Gospel Mission president, with Emad Yacoub, President and CEO of Glowbal Restaurant Group. Another cause for concern is individuals who are unable to buy or cook food. A Loving Spoonful aims to provide AIDS/HIV survivors with the basic nutrition that some are unable to receive, by delivering goods right to their door. Executive director Lisa Martella says that they’ve been running their Holiday Hamper program for at least six years, and people can help out by donating various food and hygiene products. “We make sure we know what our clients’ needs are,” said Martella, adding that Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve will be especially busy. Anybody looking to act as a driver on these busy days is encouraged to contact A Loving Spoonful. And finally, if committing to just one organization doesn’t suit you, donating to the Vancouver Foundation will always help. The foundation funds and support a number of philanthropic projects and non-profit start-ups, including food co-ops and especially youth homelessness solutions. Your time can always be spent supporting the community. Take the initiative and help your neighbours.

Question OF THE WEEK:

Do you plan to install winter tires this year? – If not, why not?

Top ten winter road trip tips: 1. A full night’s sleep ahead of a long drive is important. 2. It’s also a good idea to let a friend know when you’re leaving and the time you expect to arrive. 3. Fill the windshield washer bottle with seasonal cleaner and carry an extra container in the trunk. 4. Don’t forget to bring sunglasses – glare from snow can be hard on the eyes. 5. Wear (warm) clothes that allow good movement to steer and operate the foot pedals. 6. Bring water plus non-perishable food supplies on longer trips. 7. An emergency (first aid) kit. 8. Check the weather forecast, road conditions and for road closures on your route before heading out on a long trip. 9. Good winter tires are mandatory on most high-elevation BC highway routes during the winter. 10. If you must drive in bad weather, it’s a good idea to refuel when the tank drops below half full. If the car breaks down or gets stuck in the snow, having engine heat until help arrives could be important.

Mazda tops in Canada’s Top Twelve for 2014 By Bob McHugh Mazda bagged three of 12 “Best New” 2014 model year category awards just announced by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada. The triple award sweep (Mazda3, Mazda3 Sport and Mazda6) had to taste extra sweet as Mazda only had three entries in a field of over 50 vehicle entries. This also positions Mazda with three (of the final eight) contenders for overall 2014 Canadian Car of the Year. The 2014 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year Award was also narrowed down to four “Best New” category award winners: the stylish all-new Jeep Cherokee (SUV/CUV under $35K), great value Kia Sorrento (SUV/CUV $35K to $60K), luxurious Acura MDX (SUV/CUV over $60K) and the tough-as-nails GMC Sierra 1500 pickup. AJAC award wins in both Best New Small Car categories (under $21K and over $21K), gives the Mazda3, in various forms, an impressive total of nine trophies over its 10-year history. The Mazda6 had previous category wins in 2009, 2005 and 2004, its introductory year. Both the new Mazda3 and Mazda6 are now SKYACTIV-equipped vehicles and offer outstanding fuel economy. This was also a good awards event for General Motors, the recipient of two AJAC trophies in very different vehicle categories. In addition to the Best New Pickup Award, the 2014 Corvette Stingray was also voted the Best New sports Performance Car. “This is a monumental step for the

Chevrolet brand and the first all-new Corvette, since the first Corvette ... we couldn’t be prouder of it,” said Rob Assimakopoulus, GM Director of Marketing, during his acceptance speech. The other double-award winning manufacturer was Kia. The Best New Family Car under $30,000 award went to the revamped Kia Soul. A new and softer rendition of its offbeat five-door wagon-like design plus numerous other refinements helped the surprisingly practical Soul out-perform the competition. The new Kia Sorento notched an even more impressive victory, as it was in a highly competitive light-luxury SUV/CUV category ahead of some renowned competitive products. Free Will Astrology by Rob Brezsny • Week of December 12

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected President of the United States four times, more often than any other president. And yet he never won a majority of the votes cast by the citizens of his home county in New York. I foresee the possibility of a comparable development in your life. You may be more successful working on the big picture than you are in your immediate situation. It could be easier for you to maneuver when you’re not dealing with familiar, up-close matters. What’s outside your circle might be more attracted to your influence than what’s nearer to home. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): In 2009, actress Sandra Bullock starred in three films, two of which earned her major recognition. For All About Steve, she was given a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress. Her work in The Blind Side, on the other hand, won her an Oscar for Best Actress. I’m thinking that you may experience a similar paradox in the coming days, Taurus. Some of your efforts might be denigrated, while others are praised. It may even be the case that you’re criticized and applauded for the same damn thing. How to respond? Learn from Bullock’s example. She gave gracious acceptance speeches at the award ceremonies for both. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Almost 2,000 years ago, a Roman doctor named Scribonius Largus developed recipes for three different kinds of toothpaste. One contained the ashes of burned-up deer antler, aromatic resin from an evergreen shrub known as mastic, and a rare mineral called sal ammoniac. His second toothpaste was a mix of barley flour, vinegar, honey, and rock salt. Then there was the third: sun-dried radish blended with finely ground glass. Let’s get a bit rowdy here and propose that these three toothpastes have metaphorical resemblances to the life choices in front of you right now. I’m going to suggest you go with the second option. At the very least, avoid the third. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Are you feeling a bit pinched, parched, and prickly? Given the limitations you’ve had to wrestle with lately, I wouldn’t be surprised if you were. Even though you have passed some of the sneaky tests and solved some of the itchy riddles you’ve been compelled to deal with, they have no doubt contributed to the pinched, parched prickliness. What can be done to help you recover your verve? I’m thinking that all you will have to do is respond smartly to the succulent temptations that life will bring your way in the coming weeks. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Have you ever situated yourself between two big bonfires on a beach and basked in the primal power? Was there a special moment when you found yourself sitting between two charismatic people you loved and admired, soaking up the life-giving radiance they exuded? Did you ever read a book that filled you with exaltation as you listened to music that thrilled your soul? These are the kinds of experiences I hope you seek out in the coming week. I’d love to see you get nourished stereophonically by rich sources of excitement. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Mythically speaking, this would be a propitious time for you to make an offering to the sea goddess. In dreams or meditations or fantasies, I suggest you dive down into the depths, find the supreme feminine power in her natural habitat, and give her a special gift. Show her how smart you are in the way you express love, or tell her exactly how you will honor her wisdom in the future. If she is receptive, you may even ask her for a favor. Maybe she’ll be willing to assist you in accessing the deep feelings that haven’t been fully available to you. Or perhaps she will teach you how to make conscious the secrets you have been keeping from yourself.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Don’t linger in a doorway, Libra. Don’t camp out in a threshold or get stuck in the middle of anything. I understand your caution, considering the fact that life is presenting you with such paradoxical clues. But if you remain ambivalent too much longer, you may obstruct the influx of more definitive information. The best way to generate the clarity and attract the help you need will be to make a decisive move — either in or out, either forward or backward, either up or down. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “It’s a rare person who wants to hear what he doesn’t want to hear,” said TV talk show host Dick Cavett. I will love it if you make yourself one of those rare types, Scorpio. Can you bring yourself to be receptive to truths that might be disruptive? Are you willing to send out an invitation to the world, asking to be shown revelations that contradict your fixed theories and foregone conclusions? If you do this hard work, you will be granted a brainstorm and a breakthrough. You might also be given a new reason to brag. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): There are pregnant truths I could reveal to you right now that I’ve decided not to disclose. I don’t think you’re prepared to hear them yet. If I told you what they are, you wouldn’t be receptive or able to register their full meaning; you might even misinterpret them. It is possible, however, that you could evolve rather quickly in the next two weeks. So let’s see if I can nudge you in the direction of getting the experiences necessary to become ready. Meditate on what parts of you are immature or underdeveloped -- aspects that may one day be skilled and gracious, but are not yet. I bet that once you identify what needs ripening, you will expedite the ripening. And then you will become ready to welcome the pregnant truths. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “Finifugal” is a rarely used English adjective that refers to someone who avoids or dislikes endings — like a child who doesn’t want a bedtime story to conclude, or an adult who’s in denial about how it’s finally time to wrap up long-unfinished business. You can’t afford to be finifugal in the coming days, Capricorn. This is the tail end of your cycle. It won’t be healthy for you to shun climaxes and denouements. Neither will it be wise to merely tolerate them. Somehow, you’ve got to find a way to love and embrace them. (P.S. That’s the best strategy for ensuring the slow-motion eruption of vibrant beginnings after your birthday.) AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): According to 20th-century British author John Cowper Powys, “A bookshop is a dynamite-shed, a drugstore of poisons, a bar of intoxicants, a den of opiates, an island of sirens.” He didn’t mean that literally, of course. He was referring to the fact that the words contained in books can inflame and enthrall the imagination. I think you will be wise to seek out that level of arousal in the coming weeks, Aquarius. Your thoughts need to be aired out and rearranged. Your feelings are crying out for strenuous exercise, including some pure, primal catharses. Do whatever it takes to make sure that happens. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “I am not fearless,” says Mexican journalist and women’s right advocate Lydia Cacho, “but I’m not overtaken by fear. Fear is quite an interesting animal. It’s like a pet. If you mistreat it, it will bite, but if you understand it and accept it in your house, it might protect you.” This is an excellent time to work on transforming your fright reflexes, Pisces. You have just the right kind of power over them: strong and crafty and dynamic, but not grandiose or cocky or delusional. You’re ready to make your fears serve you, not drain you.
