All the lobby is a stage Refurbished York Theatre’s colourful façade creates drama on Commercial Drive By Martha Perkins

ld vaudeville theatres didn’t have lobbies because they didn’t need them — the shows were continual, with audience members coming and going as they pleased. Last Friday night, when temperatures dipped south of zero, the hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the relaunch of the York Theatre were grateful that architect Gregory Henriquez had somehow managed to create a lobby where only sidewalk had been when the theatre had been built in 1913. As some of the players in Vancouver’s arts scene — Mayor Gregor Robertson, financier Bruno Wall, Bard on the Beach’s Christopher Gaze, the Arts Club’s Bill Millerd — mingled in the long, narrow foyer of the former vaudeville theatre, passersby on Commercial Drive could peer through

the large windows and create their own stories about all those characters standing about in the lobby. It’s exactly what Henriquez imagined. He draped the new exterior glass wall in red tiles to represent the red curtains of a vaudeville stage. The inside walls are a mosaic of rectangular glass tiles made by Burnaby’s Interstyle Glass + Ceramic, creating the shimmering mirage of a colourful stage backdrop. The project was spearheaded by the late Vancouver politician Jim Green. “This renovation,” Bruno Wall said Friday night, “started very innocently when Jim Green phoned and said, ‘You need to buy the York Theatre.’ I got on the phone with my uncle Peter who said, ‘Go figure it out and make it happen.’” Gregor Robertson was also on Green’s speed dial. “Jim came to see me,” the mayor recounted at the opening night reception. “He said, ‘We have to make the York Theatre happen.’” Arts and community groups had long been adding their voices to the chorus and, $13 million and more years than anyone wanted to admit later, the theatre was finally

Santa’s naughty I was recently coming home from playing Santa Claus at a friend’s brunch. Still dressed as the big guy, I was driving over the Burrard Bridge and saw a crap load of broken glass in the bike lane. As Santa is a cyclist first and foremost, I looped back and put the hazard lights on to clean up. People saw the hazard lights quickly and merged with little issue — I agree it wasn’t the best place to stop, but I was careful and it got people smiling. Well, most people were smiling. A guy from the other side of the six lanes was screaming at me and freaking out as either a) I was slowing traffic; or b) he thought I was taking his bottles. I ignored him for a bit, but he just got so annoying so I gave him the “finger” and screamed “f-off”! So here is Santa giving this guy the finger as kids are coming by shouting “Hi Santa!” out the window. I told him off only once but it was “Hi Kids!” followed by a “F- You!”. Don’t worry, no kids actually saw Santa having it out. Have a great holiday, Santa

puter so I was given a phone number to call. Last night I went through 20 minutes of bullshit on the phone and in the end, I was told to do the application online. Mandela memories

We named our youngest son after Nelson Mandela and other heroic men. He is Nicholas (after the patron saint of children) Andrei (after Andrei Sakarov) David (after Henry David Thoreau) Nelson. His only complaint is that his name is too long to get on a driver’s licence. In 1981, I was teaching in New Zealand when the South African Springbok Rugby Team came to play the All Blacks. Theretofore I knew very little about apartheid and attendant issues. I got an education in a hurry. I ended up very much involved in the protest movement as I came to understand that a boycott of sports was a strong weapon against the oppression of apartheid. We feel greatly privileged to be part of this history and to know something of this great man. We hope our son will emulate Mandela’s works in some small ways. After graduation Nick plans to go to the Philippines to work in restoration following the recent disaster there. That will be a good start. Gary Pennington

ver the last couple weeks I have made Cookie Monster look like an amateur. Cookies are not even my favourite category of dessert, but it’s easy to make room for them. Calling them “biscuits” makes me feel less guilty about it, too, although who am I kidding? I never really feel guilty unless I eat 10 in one sitting. Here are 10 stand-out holiday cookies, and many are even available throughout the year. They aren’t necessarily “the best”, because we all know how I feel about “the best” anything, but they are 10 that I wouldn’t mind having all at once.

10 Holiday Cookies (in no particular order) Holiday Spiced Whipped Shortbread from Bel Café — Pastry Chef Wayne Kozniko killed his shortbread from last year with his new and improved version. The addition of rice flour and confectioner’s sugar always gives shortbread a melt-inyour-mouth consistency, and whipping the batter makes it extra light. Buttery flavour, hint of vanilla, and soft and tender texture makes it my favourite new shortbread this season. Santa’s Milk & Cookies and Vin de Noix Macarons from Soirette Macaron & Tea — Pastry chef Shobna Kannusamy’s Santa’s Milk & Cookies macaron comes with an unexpected homemade, egg-free cookie dough in the centre, and her Vin de Noix macaron is filled with a dark chocolate ganache infused with Vista D’oro Farms & Winery’s flagship fortified walnut wine. Both are exclusive to her holiday collection of macarons. Ginger Chocolate Cookies from Kitchening & Co. — Carly Wintschel specializes in macarons, but I actually prefer her new ginger chocolate cookies now. They’re soft and chewy, not too sweet, and made with freshly grated ginger, cocoa and chocolate.

Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies from Beaucoup Bakery — Jackie Kai-Ellis opened her store with these and it was an instant favourite. It’s rich, sweet, and decadent, and it will make you question the other ones in the city. She offers them in a mini stocking stuffer size this year, too. Polvoron from Goldilocks — It’s a Spanish-style shortbread cookie and they’re available all year at Goldilocks, a Filipino bakery. The cookie itself is almost creamy, but the Pinipig Polvoron has Rice Crispies in it for contrasting texture. It’s my favourite kind of polvoron.

Gorgonzola & Pistachio Shortbread from Coach House Shortbread Company — It’s based in Toronto, but you can order them online. They are a shortbread pioneer in shortbread and one of my all-time favourites. Their savoury collection is hard to beat. Parmesan & Rosemary Shortbread from PÉCHÉ MIGNON — If you’d rather buy local, then this allnatural sweet and savoury artisan shortbread is also very good. Chocolate Sparkle Cookies from Thomas Haas — It’s nothing new, but a classic. The recipe is online, or you can buy them in cookie dough form and bake them at home. Made with ground almonds and chocolate, this rich cookie is gluten free. Okinawa Matcha Shortbread from Cake-Ya — It is a quaint little Japanese bakery with to-go items in Port Moody. Their matcha shortbread is like biting into a sandcastle in a very good way. I need to do a back-to-back comparison with Bel Café’s, the texture was similar. Gluten Free Marzipan Ginger Cookies from Chef Kev — You’ll find Pastry Chef Kev at various Christmas Markets in Vancouver. These soft, moist and tender cookies and made with ground almonds, fresh candied ginger and a bit of ginger powder. It’s my favourite from his cookie collection. einhardt Fine Food has long been a destination for Europeans looking for a taste of home and travellers who want to revisit culinary adventures. But just as we can’t live in our past, a retail store can’t stay there either. Meinhardt’s recently underwent a renovation and facelift that show off enhanced frozen and on-the-go hot sections, gourmet gluten-free options and rejigged v-shaped checkout area that makes waiting in line more convivial. Last Wednesday, general manager Michael Meinhardt, whose mother Linda founded the store 18 years ago, also unveiled an array of new Meinhardt Artisan Collection products. They include caramelized pineapple frozen yogurt, cheese palmiers and twists, an porcini and asiago frozen pasta. “We need to give the customer a reason for coming here,” he says of his quest to search out the best products from around the world. “We like to think of ourselves as purveyors of culinary discoveries.”

ain Hill dips his finger into the clear liquid that is burbling in a cup attached to the huge brass still at the Yaletown Distilling Company. The company’s longtime head brewer and neophyte head distiller pauses as he absorbs the full impact of the gin’s flavours, noting the strong hints of juniper berries, coriander and bitter almonds. The flavours are intense because there’s a bit more distilling to go before the gin is bottled and sold at the distillery’s bar on Hamilton Street, but the promise of good things to come is definitely there. While gin drinkers are accustomed to a distiller’s penchant for tinkering with flavours — Hill wants to introduce lavender and bitter orange peel — Hill also knows his vodka might take a bit of getting used to. “Personally, I like it as a sipping vodka, which is why it does have more flavour,” he says of his version. “But we’ll probably end up with a couple of different vodkas.” Shaun Layton is the bar manager at L’Abattoir but he’s been working with the Mark James Group — which includes the distillery, sister restaurant and lounge, the neighbouring craft beer company and liquor store — to come up with some signature cocktails. He too likes the stronger taste of Hill’s vodka. “This reminded me of Polish vodka because it actually tasted like something,” Layton said during a recent media tour at the distillery. “Most don’t have much personality” because they are distilled so many times.

Martha Perkins photo Layton’s created a vodka version of the French 75 with citrus, sugar and sparkling wine as well as introduced his take on the Vesper Martini, which James Bond drinks in Casino Royale, using vodka, gin and Cocchi Americano. Yaletown’s vodka might take a bit of getting used to for some cocktail drinkers but Fraser Boyer, the director of operations for the Mark James Group, believes that Vancouverites’ palates are ready. “The gin is a runaway success; the vodka you have to explain,” he said. “We’re having the same challenge with the vodka that we had with IPA 19 years ago.” In December 1994, Yaletown Brewing Co. opened its doors and one of its first offerings was an India Pale Ale. No one bought it. Then the craft beer revolution happened and Yaletown’s IPA is one of its most popular offerings.

The new distillery is part of the recent artisan spirits revolution, joining Long Table Distillery, Odd Society Spirits and Liberty Distillery in Vancouver. Yaletown Distilling Company creted the first tasting bar and is back-to-back with Paulie’s Kitchen and The Distillery Bar. Just as you can sit in Yaletown Brewing Company and look through a window at the brewery chugging away, people sipping cocktails at the bar can have a view of the distillery. Hill has lots of ideas for other spirits, including a pear eau de vie. In his first experimental batch, it took 2,400 pounds of Bartlett pears to make about 80 litres of saleable spirits so he’ll finetune his recipe.... Meanwhile, his vodka and gin will be available at some BC Liquor Stores as well as the Yaletown Liquor Store and the distillery.

Computer literacy is a great skillset, no matter your age or stage in life. And while using the Internet is an invaluable tool, it can also be a slower and more involved process for older people just familiarizing themselves with all the nuances of online communication. They may ask for passwords, account numbers, billing history or other personal details.

Middle Earth, middle story: Smaug paves the way for Hobbit’s grand finale.

Smaug better, but bloated THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

Starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen Directed by Peter Jackson After a muddled and meandering start with his first Hobbit installment, director Peter Jackson returns in fine form with The Desolation of Smaug and reminds audiences why we fell in love with Middle Earth in the first place. That being said, the film still feels bloated and sags considerably at the halfway mark. Picking up, after a short flashback, almost immediately following the events of An Unexpected Journey, Bilbo (Martin Freeman), Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and their band of not so merry dwarves are on the run from the vicious Azog and his fearsome pack of Orcs. The group soon enlists the help of a shape-shifting bear named Beorn (one of the

film’s brief highlights), gets caught by some suspicious Wood-elves (including familiar face Orlando Bloom as Legolas) and eventually reaches the human settlement of Lake-town as they draw ever closer to the Lonely Mountain and its fire breathing inhabitant, Smaug the dragon. The action scenes in the first hour of the film are breathlessly paced and, for the most part, brilliantly executed; the Thor river rapids barrel sequence is jawDiakow dropping and makes for one of the most compelling parts in Jackson’s films. Many of the characters have more room to grow now that overlong dinner introductions are no longer needed. However, The Desolation of Smaug inevitably becomes a chore to sit through as the filmmaker’s excessive padding becomes obvious; still, there are magic and thrills to behold that certainly pave the way for an epic finale.

he holiday season is supposed to be a time to bask in the warmth of human companionship but not everyone will feel included. With Vancouver expecting a long, cold winter, any kind of aid is needed to help those who may be experiencing unhappy holidays. Our own apathy may get in the way — according to survey info collected by the Vancouver Foundation, a solid 27 per cent of interviewees felt that no matter what they did, it would not make a difference. And the city doesn’t seem to support community involvement either. A majority of young people between 25 and 35 years old feel alienated and lonely around this time of year. So what can we do to reach out to our neighbours? A number of organizations are making a difference, and they invite people to get involved. Union Gospel Mission on East Hastings provides food, shelter, and addictions services. They’re expecting a surge of people looking for vacancy this winter, and they plan to “open every nook and cranny for sleeping space,” according to Union Gospel’s president, Bill Mollard. The mission recognizes that loneliness is a big concern during this time of year, and they provide bus fare and long distance phone calls for residents who are far away from their families. “A sense of community is developed around this time of year,” added Mollard.

Another cause for concern is individuals who are unable to buy or cook food. A Loving Spoonful aims to provide AIDS/HIV survivors with the basic nutrition that some are unable to receive, by delivering goods right to their door. Executive director Lisa Martella says that they’ve been running their Holiday Hamper program for at least six years, and people can help out by donating various food and hygiene products. “We make sure we know what our clients’ needs are,” said Martella, adding that Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve will be especially busy. Anybody looking to act as a driver on these busy days is encouraged to contact A Loving Spoonful. And finally, if committing to just one organization doesn’t suit you, donating to the Vancouver Foundation will always help. Mazda tops in Canada’s Top Twelve for 2014 By Bob McHugh Mazda bagged three of 12 “Best New” 2014 model year category awards just announced by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada. The triple award sweep (Mazda3, Mazda3 Sport and Mazda6) had to taste extra sweet as Mazda only had three entries in a field of over 50 vehicle entries. This also positions Mazda with three (of the final eight) contenders for overall 2014 Canadian Car of the Year. The 2014 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year Award was also narrowed down to four “Best New” category award winners: the stylish all-new Jeep Cherokee (SUV/CUV under $35K), great value Kia Sorrento (SUV/CUV $35K to $60K), luxurious Acura MDX (SUV/CUV over $60K) and the tough-as-nails GMC Sierra 1500 pickup. AJAC award wins in both Best New Small Car categories (under $21K and over $21K), gives the Mazda3, in various forms, an impressive total of nine trophies over its 10-year history. The Mazda6 had previous category wins in 2009, 2005 and 2004, its introductory year. Both the new Mazda3 and Mazda6 are now SKYACTIV-equipped vehicles and offer outstanding fuel economy. This was also a good awards event for General Motors, the recipient of two AJAC trophies in very different vehicle categories. I’d love to see you get nourished stereophonically by rich sources of excitement. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Mythically speaking, this would be a propitious time for you to make an offering to the sea goddess. In dreams or meditations or fantasies, I suggest you dive down into the depths, find the supreme feminine power in her natural habitat, and give her a special gift.
