Polar Bear Swim
Alberta Ballet’s Nutcracker
Stanley Park’s secrets
On January 1, mobs of the brave (and seemingly impervious) will throw their nearly naked bodies in the Pacific Ocean, in conditions that would normally cause hypothermia. The Polar Bear Swim attracted a record high in 2011, drawing in more than 2,000 participants. Parks and Recreation has a number of tips online to prevent physical harm, and they should be read and understood by everyone before they strip down to their trunks. Just in case you were partying a little too hard on the previous night, Parks and Rec strongly recommend not imbibing any booze prior to the swim. Alcohol may feel like it warms you up, but it actually leads to a greater chance of real hypothermia. Swimmers have to be stone cold sober (and yes, that is a pun). Stick to hot chocolate. Swimmers are also warned not to stay in the water for more than 15 minutes — assuming there are die-hards who want to prove their mettle by freezing themselves to death after swimming around for half an hour. Costumes are encouraged, and photos can be uploaded to the Parks and Rec website. Participants will be given a commemorative button that will demonstrate, once and for all, that they’re truly fearless. Registration takes place at the English Bay Bathhouse between 12:30 and 2:30pm (registration is free). The mad dash into the water has a shotgun start at 2:30. Donations to the Vancouver Food Bank are appreciated. Photo by Cliff Lemire/On Site Photos
As much as we bemoan the fact that Christmas marketing seems to start the day after Halloween, when the holiday’s over we actually miss it. For those who aren’t quite ready to let the magic end, there’s the Alberta Ballet production of The Nutcracker. Who doesn’t welcome a little opulent grandeur in their lives? Set at the turn of 20th century Imperial Russia, the gorgeous sets and costumes (by Emmy Award-winning designer Zack Brown) rival the beauty of Tchaikovsky’s music, which will played live by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Alberta Ballet’s version, choreographed by Edmund Stripe, first delighted Vancouver audiences in 2011. You can relive its magnificence and splendour at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre December 28 to 30 at 7:30pm or December 29 and 31 at 2pm. Tickets range between $26.50 and $85 and can be purchased at 1-855-985-2787 or online at Ticketmaster.ca. Darren Makoivichuk photo of Aska Homma
Stanley Park is ready to whisper her secrets in your ear during a one-and-a-half-hour walking tour on December 29. Your tour guide will also share rare historical photographs that let you travel through time. Meet at the viewing plaza overlooking Lost Lagoon at the foot of Alberni at 1pm. It’s $10 cash. Go to StanleyParkHistory.ca for more information. Rob Newell photo
Christmas Eve jazz vespers Vespers, or evensong, will take on a deeper meaning on December 24 when We Three Queens, the trio of Kate Hammett-Vaughan, Jennifer Scott and Karin Plato, fills St. Andrew’s Church at Burrard and Nelson with some jazzy Christmas music. It will be a joy-filled respite that’s guaranteed to fill you with the spirit of the holiday. It’s free from 3 to 4pm but they’ll be passing the basket to benefit Convenant House, which provides love and hope to Vancouver’s street youth.

Actor Warren Christie touched by the spirit of Dinner of Love By Martha Perkins
L
ast Tuesday afternoon, actor Warren Christie had a break from shooting his new role in the CTV hit series, Motive. He thought the stores would be quiet and he’d be able to get a lot of his Christmas shopping done. The mall was packed. Everyone was stressed — the shoppers, the sales staff, the people who were just trying to get from Point A to Point B.... He’d almost forgotten that he and his wife, Sonya Saloma, had agreed to a friend’s request to help out that night at Westside Church’s monthly Dinner of Love for people whose concerns in life were a bit more pressing than his. “You’re rushing around thinking I have to get so and so the perfect bag and then you go to a place where someone just wants to come in and get warm and eat,” he says. It would be a cliché to say that he rediscovered the true meaning of Christmas that night, but it did make him stop and become more aware of those who struggle for even the most basic necessities. “It’s so prevalent and in front of us,” Christie says of the obvious signs of poverty in this city. “You promise yourself you won’t get numb to it but you do.” He and his wife were touched by the people they met, both the patrons and the volunteers, many of whom, unlike him, do this on a regular basis. They were glad that their four-year-old son, whose
It’s not all red carpet glamour for actors Warren Christie and Sonya Saloma. The Vancouver couple recently helped out at a church dinner for people who struggle to put food on the table. Sabrina Furminger photo perception of Christmas is “already a bit skewed,” was also able to experience the different kind of gift giving. Christie was touched by “how sweet and thankful everyone was and how easy it was to help. It was not something I sought out but I should have. It was something else.” If you’d like to volunteer with the monthly dinners, go to WestsideChurchVancouver.com/dinneroflove. There are many other ways you can volunteer in Vancouver. Websites such as CharityVillage.com, GoVolunteer.ca list dozens of agencies that need help. For the civic minded, the City of Vancouver often requires qualified volunteers for their boards and committees, as well as eco-conscious volunteering opportunities, and pet lovers are always welcome at the BC SPCA.

Christmas Eve & Boxing Day

f Christmas isn’t your bag, don’t worry. Vancouver is trying to make everybody happy on December 25: The Vancouver Aquarium is showcasing its Luminescence exhibit from 11:30am to 4:30pm. Robson Skating Rink is open from noon to 5pm. A number of films, including American Hustle, 47 Ronin, The Wolf of Wall Street, and even the latest Sly Stallone flick, are premiering. Buyer beware: this is also when Hollywood dumps its worst movies into the mix, movies that were neither exciting enough to draw crowds in the summer, nor intelligent enough to really get by during the fall Oscar season. If you can’t handle Keanu Reaves imitating a ninja, steer clear. Of course, there’s nothing like blasting your quads to improve your mood. Thankfully, Hillcrest, Kitsilano and Trout Lake fitness centres will all be open, as well as the aquatic centre. Golf courses at Fraserview, Langara and McCleery will also be open for putters. Capilano Suspension Bridge Park is hosting Canyon Lights, with massive Douglas fir trees decked out in lights and the suspension bridge itself glittering in the night. The event runs from 4-9 pm, with transit service running from Canada Place to the canyon. If you feel like saving your fun until Boxing Day, Chabad East Van is holding a special skating session at Trout Lake ice rink, as part of its annual post-Chanukah festivities. There’s no need to burrow down. Enjoy a calm and peaceful Vancouver!

The life and style
C
rystal Carson — stylist, media darling, event consultant — is as in-demand as it gets in Vancouver’s competitive and intimate fashion scene. We asked her for a window into her whirlwind life, especially in the lead up to the most lavish date on the social calendar: New Year’s Eve. How did you get to this point? My mother had a catering and event management company, so I have been in the event business since I was 15 years old. That evolved to include being a founding partner of Social Concierge. But, in 2007, my brother passed away and my family began experiencing financial difficulty. It was not the right time for me to be involved in a start-up, and I decided to take a break from the industry to Crystal help look after my family. My current focus is creative direction, crowd sourcing, sponsorship coordination and hosting. I will only take on a coordinator role for small private parties of 150-200 people. I am known for thinking of every detail, so you literally just show up in the right outfit, and enjoy the ride. Even though I put my career on hold, I have always kept myself in the game. Since 2011, I have started to get a lot more serious about my direct involvement in the event industry, social scene, and travel. I have become the go-to girl for friends and people around the world on where to go, what to do and with who. This is finally going to become a business; I plan to launch Global Glitterati in 2014! Follow @carsoncrystal on Twitter/Instagram or sign up at GlobalGlitterati.com for updates. What are some of the pressure points? Everything is about timing; you have to keep on

track! Organizing people’s leisure activities may be my priority but not always theirs. And then there is effective communication management. Coordinating and hosting an event or a party is a juggling act. If you drop one ball everything can fall apart in seconds. What do you look for in a party? It all comes down to the people and the energy you surround yourself with to create F.U.N. — Fabulous, Unique, Nostalgic. I always look for a unique experience, such as Deighton Cup or Diner en Blanc. I often refer to Deighton Cup as my NYE as it is my favourite annual event in Vancouver. Also, an amazing theme with a dress up element seems to get people in the spirit before the event.

Where will you be going on NYE? My current first choice is Extravaganza at the Vancouver Club for members and their guests. They have hidden rooms, incredible cocktails and a shoe valet, which means I am SOLD. Oddly, NYE is the one day of the year that I pull a typical Vancouverite move and make plans at the last minute. My main concern on NYE is who I am with rather than where I am. Although, I have been known to hop on a plane and take off to another part of the world. How will you be getting around this year? A limo bus for 25 people, so we can have a moving dance party between locations — the party does not have to stop, and no one has to drive. Most memorable NYE? During the 2010 games I became friends with a number of the IOC and I was invited to celebrate

of Crystal Carson NYE in Verbier at a chalet there. The Swiss alps are incredible. You can sled into one of the bars, DJs set up in the middle of Village Square. Homes on the mountainside stage four-hour firework battles and the village is filled with people dancing and drinking champagne. Oh, and it rains champagne for 20 minutes at midnight. Literally... You need to bring an umbrella! You can see it in the video here: Youtube.com/watch?v=QmvBnfJ05D4. What is your pre-party checklist? For a stylist, getting ready is half the fun! As an attendee rather than a coordinator, I do the following: • Morning of party, confirm all details with the host, as I am usually contributing in some capacity. • Blast out all details of timing, transportation, schedule of events for the evening, attire and any other details needed for attendance to my wingers. • Pick up my dress/outfit. Blush Occasions and Mine & Yours sponsor me for my event attire. • Go home to pair all of my accessories to complete my look. • Then the transition from my day to evening look begins. Shower, apply tanning products, blow dry hair, makeup, get dressed. • Ask my mom how I look. • Take a selfie so I can remember not to wear the exact same look again. And then it’s go time! Essentials when you leave the house? Phone and phone charger, credit card and ID, lip gloss and gum. I am actually quite low maintenance once I leave the house. NYE drink of choice? Champagne!! I know it sounds cliché but it’s actually my drink of choice all the time. Tell us what kind of looks we’ll be seeing? Shiny things!!! This season both men and women

can wear shiny lush fabrications. I actually styled a James Bond holiday look for one of my TV segments. Dolce & Gabbana made a killer oxblood velvet deconstructed blazer and tuxedo pants with a bow tie. For girls, sequins and metallic party dresses in all different silhouettes are a go. Advice for the perfect coat? Well, to be honest, I have a collection of vintage fur coats. I tend to go to thrift stores out in the suburbs to source them. Outside of that, my advice is going for length, and a great big collar on your jacket, men’s and women’s. Also, jackets that draw in at the waist look slimmer while bundled up. Which hotel do you recommend for an overnight? Fairmont Pacific Rim — the amenities will be useful in the morning, and The Lobby Lounge will be a party before you head out to your first destination. This is the first year they are throwing a non-ticketed NYE ‘Suit & Tie’ party in The Lobby Lounge. Something that surprises people about you? I didn’t really have friends growing up; I was bullied a lot and extremely shy. I was always teased for being ugly, overweight and a geek. I only had a couple friends from kindergarten to Grade 12. It wasn’t until I was about 19 that things started to change, which is why I try to always be open minded and gracious with everyone I meet. Until you have gotten to know someone with firsthand knowledge of who they are on the inside, you have no right to draw any conclusions. I try to include everyone and pay extra attention to those who may not be as outgoing.

Good night but not good bye It might be premature to say veteran Vancouver broadcaster Tony Parsons is retiring By Glen Truax
A
nother life, another chapter, awaits Tony Parsons, media figure and Vancouver icon. Parsons is retiring from the supper broadcast for CBC Vancouver, although this may not spell the end of his career. “I’m keeping my options open,” Parsons said in our interview. It’s an apt phrase coming from the same man who declared his “retirement” from his long career with Global three years ago. While he may be considered the quintessential Canadian, Parsons was actually born and raised in London, followed by a move to Ontario as a young man. By the middle of the 1970s, Parsons had already established himself as an authoritative voice in broadcast news. Beginning his career as a country music station DJ, he had climbed the rungs on air, and in 1975 Parsons flew to Vancouver to begin his storied career at BCTV, which would later be known as Global. “Vancouver was the frontier then,” says the 74-year-old broadcaster. “It was the frontier of politics, it was the frontier of development.” Parsons anchored BCTV for 30 years, beginning when nightly local news was the predominant media forum. Parsons has seen the news format mutate over the decades, witnessing the emergence of 24-hour news broadcasts, the near death of print, and the advent of blogs and online news sources. “It’s a fragmented audience now — the pie is much smaller.” The sheer number of competing news resources has spelled the end, or at least the change, of the supper time TV news. “People like me may
Tony Parsons signs autographs at a CBC open house. Wendy D Photography not exist in 10 years’ time,” Parsons remarked. “The CBC is a national institution, but it could well be different in the future.” After his last broadcast on December 20, Parsons is returning to his weekend home in Victoria, where he’ll assume full-time residence. In the past few years, he has juggled anchor duties in Vancouver and then flying via helicopter to Victoria to anchor CHEK-TV’s broadcast. Parsons is looking forward to the permanent move. “Some people talk about ‘island fever’, but I’ve never experienced it.” The mild weather of Victoria will support his fondness for golf, but he still maintains a love for Vancouver. “This is a vibrant, growing part of the country. Vancouver has overcome its geographic boundaries, and now everyone wants to be here. You don’t meet many Vancouverites who have moved out of the city.” Parsons is leaving Vancouver, but his impact is still present in the city. Media personalities are rare enough, and in the age where C-list “celebrities” get their own cable shows, we may never have genuine icons like Parsons again.

THE DISH West Side residents have long been unfairly favoured by living near awardwinning La Quercia. Now, there’s another reason for gastro-envy. Owner/ chef Adam Pegg also runs L’Ufficio next door. This cozy little wine bar focuses on Italian salumi (think charcuterie) and cheeses, as well as a rotating list of small plates, pastas, and daily set menus, all perfect for some post-shopping refreshment. On a recent visit, the house-smoked herring with buratta and pickled onions was a wonder of flavour and contrasting textures, while a dish of chicken meatballs with crispy sage was a warm, juicy amuse that prepared us for the large wooden block of cured meats that followed. Paired with a few glasses of Prosecco Zardetto, and the night was complete. LaQuercia.ca/Lufficio

Perfect recipe for last-minute gifts By Anya Levykh
I
t’s the final week of my gift guide series, and for those last-minute shoppers, I always advise the simplest and best of gifts — a book. More specifically, a cookbook! As the old saying goes, “Give a girl some chocolate, she’ll be fed for a day; teach a girl to make chocolate, and you’ve created a lifetime obsession.” Or, something like that. Here are five Canadian cookbooks that have rocked the stands this year, are easy to wrap, and — most importantly — contain recipes that taste extra primo super good. Available at Barbara-Jo’s Books to Cooks (BooksToCooks.com) or your local bookstore. The Butcher, the Baker, the Wine and Cheese Maker: An Okanagan Cookbook by Jennifer Schell This book just won the Gourmand International Cookbook Award for Best Local Cuisine Book in Canada, and justifiably so. Schell is a passionate advocate of all things local, and comes from a long line of Okanagan farmers. Each recipe is also a story about the various chefs, winemakers, farmers and producers who worked together to create each pairing. It is a heartfelt testament to the dedi-
cated people behind BC’s food scene. $24.95 Butter Baked Goods: Nostalgic Recipes from a Little Neighborhood Bakery by Rosie Daykin It’s the sweetest cookbook from what started as a tiny little bakery on Vancouver’s West Side, and is now famed for its delectable baked goods, and what are widely acknowledged as the best gourmet marshmallows in North America. With over 100 recipes for everything from cakes and pies to confections and creams, this is sure to please the avid home baker in your life. $35 The Complete Chocolate Book by the Canadian Living Test Kitchen Because it’s Christmas, a list of cookbooks without chocolate just wouldn’t be complete — and this is one complete list. With recipes divided into categories like Gooey, Creamy, Crumbly, Melty, Chewy, Chilly and Cakey, the mouth is already starting to salivate. Every recipe has been triple-tested for perfection, and there are more than 100 tips and how-to photos to guide you through everything from slow-cooker hot cocoa cake to Earl Grey chocolate truffles. This is the chocoholic’s guide to heaven. $34.95
Free Will Astrology by Rob Brezsny • Week of December 26
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): Edmund Kean (1789-1833) was one of the most famous British actors of his time. But the poet Samuel Coleridge was frustrated by Kean’s inconsistencies. “To see him act,” said Coleridge, “is like reading Shakespeare by flashes of lightning.” You have bursts of brilliance that you sometimes don’t follow up on. You’re like a superstar who loses your concentration. I’ve got a strong feeling that in 2014 you will at least partially overcome this tendency. Your word of power is consistency.
Alice Eats: A Wonderland Cookbook by Julie van Rosendal and Pierre A. Lamielle Anyone with kids — or who’s still a kid at heart — will enjoy one more trip down the rabbit hole with Alice, the Mad Hatter and all the rest of Lewis Carroll’s timeless characters. Even better, this time you can eat along with them, everything from Dinah’s saucer of panna cotta to the Dormouse’s sticky toffee tea cake. Recreate the Mad Hatter’s tea party, as well as more savoury dishes like the pork and pepper soup in chapter six, and enjoy the trip back to Wonderland. $34.95
would be. Relax into being more content with the intriguing creation you have already become. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): Folk musician Nick Drake recorded his album Pink Moon in a mere four hours. It took years for anyone to appreciate his artistry, but eventually Melody Maker selected Pink Moon on its list of “All Time Top 100 Albums.” Here’s one way I suspect your efforts will be similar in 2014: You will have the ability to get a lot done in a short time. Here are two ways your fate will be different: First, you will have a big pool of trustworthy allies to call on for help. Second, what you produce won’t take nearly as long to get the appreciation it warrants.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): Your last best hope to get rich was back in 2001. From July 2025 to June 2026, the cosmos will again conspire to give you another big fat chance. But why get bogged down dreaming of the past or fantasizing about the future when opportunities to boost your prosperity are in front of you right now? Financial luck is flowing your way. Viable ideas for making money are materializing in your subconscious treasure house. The contacts that could help you build your wealth are ready to play with you. (This offer good until July 2014.)
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21): “We don’t accomplish our love in a single year as the flowers do,” says Rainer Maria Rilke in the Duino Elegies. Do you promise to take that truth into consideration in 2014? Will you devote yourself to creating the right conditions for love to flourish? In the past, you may not have been fully able to carry out this slow-building marvel; you may not have had quite enough wise perseverance. But you do now.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): “Now that you don’t have to be perfect, you can be good,” says a character in John Steinbeck’s East of Eden. Make this your rallying cry in 2014, Virgo. Free yourself of the pressure to be the polished, ultimate embodiment of everything you’d ever hoped you

horoscopes
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21): Eierlegende Wollmilchsau is a colloquial German term for a mythical pig that lays eggs like a chicken, provides milk like a cow, supplies wool like a sheep, and ultimately becomes bacon and pork chops. Imagine a futuristic smart phone that could interpret your dreams, trim your unwanted hair, fix you a perfect cup of coffee and tell you you’re beautiful in ways you actually believe. There’s no such thing, right? Not yet. But there’s a chance you will find the next best thing in 2014.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): In the coming months, you will exit a confined place or shed cramped expectations or break off your commitment to a compromise that has drained you. How the escape unfolds will have to do with how thoroughly you extract the lessons that your “incarceration” has made available. Give a gift to the people you’re leaving behind, or offer a blessing in the area where your difficult teachings have taken place.
look for the secret of the Triple O sauce. That’s one recipe staying locked in the vault. Available at White Spot locations for $19.28 or in stores for $24.95.
White Spot Cookbook by Kerry Gold It’s BC’s original family
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): Ernest Rutherford (18711937) is known as the father of nuclear physics. He was also a superb teacher. Eleven of his students won Nobel Prizes. That’s the kind of teacher or mentor I urge you to connect with in 2014, Taurus. The coming months will potentially be an optimum time for you to learn deeply, and at a rapid rate. Apprentice yourself to those who have mastered the skills and savvy you want to acquire.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): Poet Edmond Jabès had this to say about the birth of big creative ideas: “For the writer, discovering the work he will write is both like a miracle and a wound, like the miracle of the wound.” I expect that you will experience a wrenching and amazing awakening like this in 2014. The opening you’ve been working for will finally crack its way into your destiny. It may be one of the most pleasurable disruptions you’ve ever had.
restaurant, founded by Nat Bailey, and has been serving burgers with Triple O sauce since 1928. With recipes for classics like the chicken pot pie to contemporary additions from local celebrity chefs, such as John Bishop’s chicken curry, it’s all here. You can recreate your childhood experience at home, while reading about the history of this landmark institution — just don’t
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19): In 1588, the ruler of Japan confiscated the swords, daggers, and spears belonging to every citizen and melted them down to make a giant Buddha statue. What if you could “melt down” some of your primal rage and use that energy to build your personal equivalent of a Buddha icon? AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): The period between last July and next June is prime time to find or create your dream job. That might mean simply upgrading your existing gig. Or it could involve you rethinking your relationship with work and going off in quest of a new way to earn a living. The goal should be clear, and you should be more disciplined, organized, and determined than ever. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): “Singing teaches two skills that are essential for any creative process,” says Rachel Bagby, “the ability to listen and the ability to be flexible and spontaneous.” 2014 could potentially be a Golden Age for your creativity, a time when you benefit from exploring and enhancing your imaginative originality. Cut loose with your vocal stylings whenever you have a chance, and take a vow to propel yourself out of funky moods with the creative energy of your singing.

erhaps it’s a common thought that there’s a sense of cliché, or ubiquity, with toasting the new year with sparkling wine. I almost wish it was that common, because it can be such a fantastic, versatile and food-friendly style of wine. When I was running restaurants, we always upped our stock of sparkling towards the end of December, and after conversations with a bunch of colleagues, I know that still to be the case. The thing is, while there are usually plenty of cases on hand, more often than not there’s barely a dent in that stock come the wee hours of January 1. When asking non-wine trade friends why they don’t drink sparkling more often, the response usually entails something to the effect of it being more of a ‘special occasion’ thing. My thought is that, sure, sparklings can absolutely add an extra splash of cheer or whimsy to a special occasion, but last time I checked there’s no rule against enjoying a glass or two of the good stuff on an idle Wednesday in January as well. Let’s make a resolution to drink more bubble in 2014. You can begin with it being your beverage of choice as the clock strikes 12 on New Year’s Eve. Here are three suggestions, all of them done in the ‘traditional method’ a la Champagne, to get you started down the right path. Antech Cremant de Limoux | Languedoc, France | $25+ | Private Wine Stores Carrying on six generations of tradition for stellar sparkling in the south of France, the house of Antech has a solid reputation for consistency, quality and value. This blend of Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Mauzac has a nice little just-baked yellow sponge cake thing on the nose, then muddled lemon and Seville orange on the palate with a hint of of high-quality olive oil, adding an extra touch of sophistication.
EAT MEAT. REPEAT.
Blue Mountain ‘Gold Label’ Brut | Okanagan Falls, BC | $25+ | Private Wine Stores/WineryDirect Long established as the winery making some of the best bubbly in British Columbia, the Mavety family’s Gold Label is composed of estate-grown, hand-harvested Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. After harvest and the second fermentation in the bottle, the wine sits on the spent yeast lees for 24 months, resulting in some charming brioche-y aromas, which then get slathered with orange marmalade and fresh lime. The value here is incredible. Lanson Black Label Brut | Champagne, France | $64.99 | BC Liquor Stores This is the real deal from Champagne, offering the toasty nose, crisp minerality and vibrant citrus character one would expect. The classic blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier is super-fragrant and reminiscent of those first few moments peeling a Mandarin orange around the holidays. While the wine is dry, there is a juicy component to it too, making it all the more welcome at your dinner table. As always, if you’re having trouble finding something or just want to say hi, find me via KurtisKolt.com or on Twitter @KurtisKolt.

t’s the last article of the year. Oh, the pressure. How do I sum it all up? Highlight the restaurants that opened? Or mourn the restaurants that closed? Talk about the year’s most overdone food trends, such as mashups like the Cronut© or Ramen Burger? Or address the most over used culinary words of this year? Hello “farm-to-table”, “artisan”, “hand-crafted”, “small-batch”, “foraging”, and “eat local”. I use all these words, too, and some do their subject justice, but much of it has become culinary “greenwashing”. I say, “Baloney!” No, not the lunch meat, but bull shhhh… Phew… Deep breath. Okay, I don’t want to end the year on a bad note, so how about a Christmas carol from yours truly? Although, I can’t promise my singing is great. Here we go... On the first day of Christmas a foodie once told me: It’s been 12 Years for Klippers Organics 11 Years for Provence Marinaside 10 Years for Guu Gastown 9 Years for Chambar Restaurant 8 Years for Ocean Wise 7 Mark Brand projects 6 Sean Heather restaurants laying 5 Onion rings (I like the ones from Romer’s Burger Bar) 4 Hapa Izakayas 3 French Men who opened: 2 Meat & Bread and a Scott Jaeger in a “Pear Tree” Congratulations from the Westender family!

simplythairestaurant.com Mijune wrote about Guu’s Maguro with Five-Coloured sauce in November, and sings the restaurant’s praises again for her last story of the year. Vancouver can be a tough market for chefs, farmers, and anyone in the restaurant industry. It’s long hours, sleepless nights, and small margins, but it’s the passion and energy that keeps our culinary scene glowing and diners well fed. Wishing all old and new restaurants, and socially responsible farmers and programs, continued success for 2014. PS: The men from Meat & Bread are not really French, but they are for the sake of the song.

Stiller misfires in silly Mitty The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Starring Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig Directed by Ben Stiller As amusing as Ben Stiller thinks he is skateboarding down an Icelandic country highway with a generic pop song blasting as the soundtrack, it’s just not that compelling for us. Such is The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a film that meanders and wavers into wacky daydreams, forced melodrama, overwrought soul searching and downright silliness. Based on the extremely short story by James Thurber, Stiller directs and stars in the title role as a lonely LIFE magazine employee who copes with the aid of elaborate daydreams in which he saves an attractive coworker’s dog from a burning building and beats up his megalomaniac boss in an imaginary fight sequence like something out of a Marvel movie.
The problem with these moments is how jarring they are to the overall mood of the film and how artificially they are executed. As a testament to the unstoppable digital age and a commentary on modern print journalism, the magazine is facing cutbacks and Mitty embarks on a bizarre journey around the globe to find a mysterious photo that has Thor gone missing and is needed Diakow for the final issue. This is where things go off the rails even more; we follow Mitty to Greenland, Iceland and Afghanistan and suddenly his daydreams disappear only to be replaced by cartoonish and one dimensional ‘real world’ characters. Sure, a lot of money was spent on location shooting, but, for a movie that boasts the power of dreams, this one comes up exceedingly short on heart and humanity.

Starring Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman Directed by Joel Coen, Ethan Coen While Joel and Ethan Coen have certainly made films every bit as accomplished as their latest, they’ve never told a story so fuelled by raw, unfettered emotion. Dispensing with the distance they often keep from their protagonists, they craft a drama as intimate and aching as the captivating folk songs that serve as its soundtrack. Transported to the snow-swept streets of 1961 New York, we’re introduced to Llewyn Davis (loosely based on Dave Van Ronk and exquisitely played by the doleful Oscar Isaac), a self-involved, misanthropic singersongwriter still reeling after the loss of his partner. The fact Llewyn has a credit on his account with the local abortionist clearly indicates that things rarely go to plan for him. And, of course, the Coens delight in raining down chaos on anyone
foolish enough to try and instil order on their lives. Guided by the lilting melancholy of composer T Bone Burnett’s inspired reinterpretations of folk standards, the filmmakers employ a darkly comic touch in twisting the staples of the ‘60s film, leaving these conventions beguilingly distorted. To wit, a road trip with an opiate-addled, Mephistophelian jazz musician (John Goodman) offers disillusionment rather than self-discovery. Likewise, Llewyn pours his dark soul into a go-for-broke one-song audition only to be callously dismissed in the most heart-wrenching sequence the Coens have ever penned. Frequently the orchestrator of his own misery, the recalcitrant troubadour emerges as both thoroughly unlikeable and yet eminently loveable. His actions (and inactions) occasionally leave you aghast but they ring as true as the notes so skilfully elicited from his guitar. — Curtis Woloschuk
A hustle worth every penny AMERICAN HUSTLE
Starring Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper Directed by David O. Russell Whereas most “con job” movies centre on a single mastermind who’s on top of everything, David O. Russell’s fictionalized account of the FBI’s infamous Abscam sting hinges on a handful of misfits who are struggling just to keep it together. Despite the disco era wardrobes, these characters are cut from the same cloth as the endearing head cases found in Russell’s recent delirious confections like The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook. American Hustle’s brilliant opening sequence traces the meticulous construction of the elaborate combover that allows Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), a low-rung shyster, to convincingly feign a full head of hair. In fact, everyone involved here is chasing the America dream of reinventing themselves, whether it’s Irving’s ex-stripper girlfriend Sydney (Amy Adams) with her fake accent or Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper),
the FBI agent whose casual swagger scarcely conceals that he’s more tightly wound than his perm rods. Given the instability of everyone involved (including the scene-stealing Jennifer Lawrence, as Irving’s looney tunes wife), there’s rarely the sense that anyone is actually running the operation that Richie ropes Irving and Sydney into. Instead, it appears to be on a runaway course, careening wildly as it assumes an exhilarating velocity. In turn, Russell’s camera swoops about wildly, emulating vintage Scorsese and heightening the sensation that the film is as unhinged as the lunatics populating it. And right around the point the Bee Gees plaintively croon “How can a loser ever win?”, Russell shows us precisely how characters with limited options but lofty ambitions claw their way to victory. If only every Hollywood film employed such panache when making off with our hardearned money. — Curtis Woloschuk

Video stores are dead? Not here they’re not
L
et’s pretend for a moment that you want to see a movie from the comfort of your couch. You punch in Netflix, attempt to find the film — which should be easy, the movie is a classic — and you come up with nothing. What can you do? Where are you going to go to find a copy of, say, The French Connection? As it turns out, the renter still has options, even if dinosaurs like Rogers Video and Blockbuster have been driven to extinction. The venerable granddaddy of independent video stores, Black Dog Videos, still maintains two locations, one on Cambie, the other on Commercial. It’s been a tough year, says proprietor Darren Gay. “There’s so much out there to compete against now — the Netflix, VOD, Redbox, illegal and legal downloading....” But what Gay adds as a caveat is echoed by staff at stores from Limelight to They Live Video — people like interacting with other people, preferably someone who has some knowledge of what they’re talking about. Instead of letting Netflix “recommend” other movies to you via keyword searches and genre staples, stores such as Black Dog have the staff and the selection to offer alternatives. Not that these locations are necessarily hubs of underground cinema. Even They Live Video, a store named after a cult John Carpenter film, makes the rent by offering blockbuster, mainstream videos. Still, nearly every location mentioned some kind of specialization — documentaries and British movies in Limelight’s case, and genuinely oddball offerings at They Live. “Blockbuster movies are our bread and butter,” said Ben Jacques, owner of They Live. “But that gives us the money to get a hold of the really weird stuff that you can’t normally find.” Of course, repertory film houses have known about this for a long time, and classic films (either reissues or otherwise improved screenings) remain
dealt with a loss of about 20 per cent rentals. Some businesses such as Rio Theatre and They Live are unafraid to mix media — Rio regularly hosts cabarets and special events, and They Live runs karaoke nights. But what these businesses provide is something sorely missing in online transactions. “We’re hoping that we can continue to stay in business and offer our great customers a fun, comfortable place to peruse our awesome collection and talk to an actual human being,” said Darren Gay. Comfort may still be attractive in this digital age.
to provide film classics as well as a traditional “evening out.” Vancity Theatre in Yaletown is offering a $50 Holiday Film Pass, valid for all film showings from Dec 21 to Jan 2. It will be home to a number of classics for the holiday season, ranging from the obligatory Woody Allen retrospective to series devoted to directors such as the Coen Brothers and Jacques Demy. These are all labours of love for the most part. “I’m broke. I work 12 hours a day, and I make about four dollars a day after everything,” They Live Video’s Ben Jacques said. hat better way to end the year than jostling for dancing space in a massive coliseum? The Contact Winter Festival is once again blasting through Vancouver, bigger than ever. This is a sequel to the 2012 Contact festival, which had thousands dancing to the likes of Deadmau5. This year, the festival sprawls over two days (December 26 and 27), with Skrillex, Diplo, and Tale of Us running the sound-systems of BC Place to their limits. This is going to be a busy month for EDM in Vancouver, with a similarly gargantuan showcase (Solid) at the Pacific Coliseum on New Years’ Eve, and the party will continue right through the post-holiday daze of January. Contact, the biggest electronic fes-
tival in Western Canada, is organized by Blueprint, the company behind last year’s Winter Festival as well as numerous club events throughout Vancouver. “We wanted to offer more content, more artists for the people. We have a healthy scene with more faces than before,” says co-founder Alvaro Prol. This also marks a growing trend in popularity of electronic music in general, especially in a city as comparatively small as Vancouver. It shows that there are literally thousands of EDM fans who are willing to exit the clubs and enter the arena. There is a limited number of artists that can fill an arena — Prol guesses that there may be as few as 15 or 20 such stars — but the popularity of these events means that there are at least some faces who can transition to arena rockers. Honda’s contemporary on a dying breed 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6 It’s fascinating to watch trends in the auto industry play out over time. Some changes happen quickly, with one manufacturer coming out with a feature, then the rest of the industry following suit. Backup cameras would be a good example of this. Other trends are much slower, changing because of demographic fluctuations. One example of a slow-moving trend is the two-door coupe falling out of favour and its replacement by sedans and crossovers. This trend is greatly affected by baby boomers getting older and buying more for practical reason, rather than styling. In the 1980s, and even the beginning of the 90s, there were plenty of coupes to choose from and they sold well. But where are the Honda Prelude, Toyota Celica, Pontiac Sunfire and Ford Probe coupes? Now gone and many not replaced with newer models. I’m thrilled to report that there are a few coupes still available and one that is worthy of consideration is this new 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6. Looks The Accord Coupe is based on the all-new Accord sedan that has been selling very well for Honda. In fact, it won the Canadian Car of the Year this year as decided by the Automobile Journalist Association of Canada. Honda has done a good job of updating this big coupe with a more modern twist. Sold in three configurations from the base EX to the EX-L Navi (L stand for leather and navi is self-explanatory),
which are both 4-cylinder way the radio stores and equipped models. The top retrieves pre-set radio trim is the EX-L Navi with stations. It took a long V6. This top trim level is the time to set the stereo model seen here: it comes up and having to go with LED projector headback and forth between lamps, 18-inch wheels and different screens is not duel chrome exhaust tips. If you like the idea that intuitive. The rest of The 4-cylinder equipped the dash is large, with big models come with halogen of a smart looking car cup holder and plenty of headlamps and 17-inch storage areas. that is well equipped alloy wheels. The coupe The steering wheel and powerful, you starts at $26,400, a $2,500 buttons and heat controls premium over the regular might want to move on on the dash use first rate an Accord Coupe. sedan but when the switches and they are sedan is equipped with placed with precision. Zack Spencer alloy wheels, the price is Drive Another trend almost identical. The EX-L that Honda is bucking, with this Accord is $30,100 for the leather and navi and Coupe, is the inclusion of a 6-speed the V6 premium is $35,500. Not an manual transmission and V6 engine. The inexpensive car but most are very well latest movement is to turbo or superequipped. charged 4-cylinder engines to replace V6

Inside It’s a big and comfortable coupe. The back seat is actually usable for adults and the front seats are very comfortable. The trunk is huge and the back seat folds for extra long items but the seats do not split and fold, plus the opening to the back seat is small. Standard feature on all Accord models is a backup camera and heated seats. Honda, in my opinion, has raised the bar in the mid-sized category and produced the nicest dash I have seen in this class. There are two screens in the centre console, one for the navigation unit and the other for the radio. They are framed in beautiful, high quality satin metal, chrome and soft touch materials. One area that could be improved is the
power plants and duel clutch automatic transmission in favour of a manual. I’m glad that Honda still offers this layout; it shows they are serious about being a true enthusiast’s car company. Granted, most buyers will get the very good 6-speed automatic transmission with the 3.5L V6, but with 278hp and 252 lb.ft. of torque it will be a very lively car in either configuration. The manual is a joy to use and it is like a throwback to drive a V6 equipped manual car. The 4-cylinder models have 185hp from a direct injection 2.4L engine and either a manual transmission or continuously variable transmission (CVT) for added fuel savings. The CVT is capable of 7.8L/100km in the city and 5.7L on the highway. The
V6 uses more at 10.0L/100km in the city and 6.1L on the highway. Verdict When I started reviewing cars back in the early 1990s, cars like this were common: a mid-sized sedan with a V6 engine and a manual transmission. I can clearly remember driving a Toyota Camry, Nissan Maxima and Accord equipped this way. While most companies are moving away from this design, Honda is sticking with it for now. Soon Honda will have smaller turbocharged 4-cylinder engines available and this big coupe might too be fitted with something more efficient. If you like the idea of a smart looking car that is well equipped and powerful, you might want to move on an Accord Coupe V6 before it follows the latest trend.
The Lowdown Power: 2.4L 4-cylinder with 185hp or 3.5L V6 with 278hp Fill-up: 7.8L/5.7L/100km (city/highway 4-cylinder) Sticker price: $26,400-$35,500
