Welcome to Vancouver Pride 2015
Every year, all over the world, the LGBTQ community has what some might call a “family reunion”. We all meet up for Pride, and sometime in the week leading up to the big day, we get our hair cut, go to the gym for our last set of ab crunches and make sure our outfits are fabulous so that we look our best for the “cousins” we see once a year. We celebrate in many ways around the world: we march, we protest, we host festivals or put on parades, but whatever it is we do, we call it Pride. For that one day, we are visible and proud and we welcome everybody to celebrate our community at our reunion. No matter where you might be for Pride, you know that once you step into it, you’re a part of it. And if you’re not, you want to be. There is joy, 6
love, laughter, acceptance and a sense of elation and wild abandon at the spectacle. For that one day, we don’t have to hide, we don’t have to be afraid and we don’t have to feel shame, for there are thousands and thousands of us standing together, united as one. It’s on this day that Pride links us together, wherever we are. There’s a familiar and welcoming feeling when you arrive at Pride. It’s not just the leather men, gyrating twinks, colourful drag queens, sporty softball jocks, or topless women. There’s something in our spirits that’s visible to those who look past the party. It doesn’t show itself by waving a rainbow flag nor does it need to march. It’s the deep sense that we’re a family that’s journeyed here, and now we’re connected in celebration.

Welcome to the West End, the home of Pride
For more than 35 years, Vancouver’s West End neighbourhood has been the home of Pride, and a place where people from all walks of life can call home. “It’s a great place to visit, and it’s a great place to live,” says Stephen Regan, executive director of the West End Business Improvement Association. The diversity of the neighbourhood is apparent the second you step foot on the street. People of every culture, background, age, and sexual orientation have been drawn to the neighbourhood thanks to its proximity to nature and to Downtown Vancouver. Although the West End is one of 8
the most densely populated neighbourhoods in North America, it has a well-deserved reputation for being a friendly and welcoming place, to visitors and new residents alike. “There’s a recognition here that you have to share this wealth and share these blessings,” says Regan.”This neighbourhood has always opened its doors.” Life in the West End is centred around Davie, Denman, and Robson streets, and each bring their own unique flavour. Davie Village is the quirky hub of Vancouver’s gay community, and also home to many of the services in the West End, with St. Paul’s Hospital providing the 24-

hour heartbeat for the neighbourhood. Denman is a tourist mecca stretching from sea to sea, lined with some of Vancouver’s best restaurants, all a stone’s throw from majestic Stanley Park. Robson is home to some of the best shopping anywhere, and is a hub for Vancouver’s Asian community. “We have three great streets making up one great neighbourhood,” says Regan. The West End is Vancouver’s second oldest residential neighbourhood, and quickly became a desirable destination for families who didn’t want to live near the many mills that once lined Vancouver’s harbour. The Manhattan Building, located on the corner of Robson and Thurlow, is Vancouver’s oldest apartment building. The corner of Davie and Georgia was once home to the grand Denman
Arena, a 10,500-capacity rink that was the home ice of the Vancouver Millionaires, winners of the 1915 Stanley Cup. The neighbourhood was also the birthplace of tourism in Vancouver, thanks to its close proximity to English Bay, Coal Harbour, and Stanley Park. Today, the West End is one of the most desirable neighbourhoods in the city, the place where Vancouver comes to celebrate, and is expected to grow by 10,000 people in the coming decades, according to Regan. “There’s a renewed energy and vitality here,” he says. “This neighbourhood has a bright future. It’s just humming!” To learn more about the West End neighbourhood and its many businesses, visit WestEndBIA.com W –Robert Mangelsdorf

New York City, 1969
LGBTQ history at a glance
• The history of homosexuality can be recorded back to as early as 12,000 BC, with artifacts and artwork suggesting an appreciation for homoeroticism, including a graphically carved double dildo, found in Gorge d’Enfer, France. • An ancient Egyptian tomb dating back to the 24th or 25th century BC was built for two male lovers, likely the first record of a homosexual relationship. • In 54 AD emperor Nero marries two men in a legal ceremony and accords one of the men the same honours, status and privileges as a Caesar’s wife. • In 342, the criminalization of homosexuality begins with the sons of Constantine the First outlawing gay prostitutionand gay marriage, eventually outlawing all homosexuality. • In 589, medieval Spain outlaws homosexuality, but in the rest of Europe homosexuality remains completely legal. • Between 1250 and 1300, homosexu12
ality passes from being completely legal in most of Europe to incurring the death penalty in all but a few countries. • In 1533, King Henry VIII introduces the Sodomy Laws to England which criminalizes masturbation, anal and oral sex regardless of gender. • In 1779, Thomas Jefferson prepares a draft for the Virginia Criminal Statute that called for castration as the punishment for sodomy. • Between 1791- 1858, many countries start to decriminalize homosexuality, including France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Tuscany, the Netherlands, Bavaria, Brazil and the Ottoman Empire. • In 1871, the penalty in England for sodomy is reduced from hanging to imprisonment only in 1861. • In 1880, Japan becomes the first Asian country to decriminalize homosexuality. PRIDE IN THE PAST Continued from page 12 • In 1886, Queen Victoria outlaws sexual relations between two men (but not between women). • In 1920, the word “gay” is used for the first time in reference to homosexuals. • In 1937, the pink triangle is used to identify gay men in the Nazi concentration camps. When the allied forces liberate the camps in 1945, those men interned for homosexuality are not freed, but instead forced to serve out the full term of their sentences. • In 1969, the Stonewall Riots in New York City serve as a catalyst for the gay liberation movement. • On July 20, 2005, Canada becomes the fourth country in the world – and the first country outside Europe – to legalize samesex marriage with the enactment of the Civil Marriage Act. • On June 26, 2015, the US be-
14
London, 1983 comes the 18th country to recognize samesex marriage nationwide, following a ruling by the US Supreme Court. • Today more than 80 countries around the world still criminalize homosexuality, while eight countries have the death penalty for anyone caught or suspected of being queer (Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Nigeria, Mauritania, Sudan, Iran, Somalia). –Caryl Dolinko

QUEER ARTS Festival
Sister Mary’s a Dyke?!, July 28-Aug. 2.
Trigger: Drawing the Line in 2015 The Queer Arts Festival is known for being provocative, but this year’s programming comes with a Trigger warning. Building on the 25th anniversary of Kiss & Tell’s groundbreaking Drawing the Line exhibition (the Vancouver photography show has since been cited in the Oxford Dictionary of Art as the epitome of LGBT art), and the modern controversy surrounding the work of local young adult author Raziel Reid, QAF organizers sought to explore the theme of where people draw the line today, while celebrating the landmark moment in Vancouver’s queer arts heritage. Censorship persists, and Trigger: Drawing the Line in 2015 questions what sets people off, and what is being sacrificed for “safety’s sake.” While already holding its own one of the top five queer arts and culture festivals in the world, QAF certainly isn’t resting on its acclaim: here are 10 boundary-pushing events from the fest to explore. COR FLAMMAE: FALLEN ANGELS Friday, July 17, 8pm; Saturday, July 18, 9pm 30
St. Andrew’s Wesley United Church (Friday); Club 8x6 (Saturday) Dubbed the “pre-festival fluffer”, Fallen Angels is a concert of sacred and profane choral works by queer composers. Choose your venue – church or sex club. TRIGGER: DRAWING THE LINE IN 2015 Thursday, July 23 – Friday, Aug. 7 Roundhouse Exhibition Hall Curated by SD Holman, QAF’s signature visual arts show honours the 25th anniversary of Kiss & Tell’s legendary Drawing the Line exhibition. Artists are asked, “Where do you draw the line in 2015?” SALON DES REFUSÉS Thursday, July 23 – Friday, Aug. 7 Opening night: July 26, 7pm Little Sisters Book & Art Emporium In a cheeky salute to the iconoclastic 1863 Paris exhibition of the same name, anti-censorship champion Little Sister’s exhibits visual art by queer local talent that is too explicit for the show at the Roundhouse Community Centre.

QUEEROTICA Friday, July 24, 7:30pm Roundhouse Exhibition Hall Anti-censorship readings to tantalize and titillate – aka “Catherine and Jim’s dirty porn night.” KISS & TELL Saturday, July 25, 7:30pm Roundhouse Performance Centre Notorious Vancouver collective Kiss & Tell’s first public appearance together in 13 years, co-presented with Kickstart Disability Arts & Culture. Videos with talkback moderated by Janine Fuller of Little Sister’s. TRIGGER WARNING: A VIDEO CURATION BY CORAL SHORT Monday, July 27, 7:30pm Roundhouse Performance Centre Fearless queer video art curated by international curator Coral Short. Followed by a dialogue with artists and the curator facilitated by Gwen Haworth. SISTER MARY’S A DYKE?! Tuesday, July 28 – Sunday, Aug. 2, 7:30pm Roundhouse Performance Centre Co-produced with the frank theatre, this coming-out tale set in a Catholic girls’ school becomes a fantasy of attacking church patriarchy. Kim Villagante stars in Flerida Peña’s energetic solo show.
COSMOPHONY Saturday, Aug. 1, 2pm Firehall Arts Centre Co-presented with the Powell Street Festival, pianist and QAF staffer Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa performs contemporary music inspired by the beauty and mystery of the cosmos. Twelve composers share their inner reflections on outer space. PROX:IMITY RE:MIX & NIGHT Tuesday, Aug. 4, 7:30pm Roundhouse Performance Centre Queer contemporary dance by Kinesis Dance somatheatro and MACHiNENOiSEY’s youth dance intensive. A QUEEN’S MUSIC: REGINALD MOBLEY IN RECITAL Thursday, Aug. 6, 7:30pm Roundhouse Performance Centre Countertenor Reginald Mobley and harpsichordist/pianist Alexander Weimann shine a light on music by gay composers from the 18th century onwards. Co-presented with Early Music Vancouver. Queer Arts Festival runs July 23 – Aug. 7. Passes range from free to $40. For more events and info, head to QueerArtsFestival.com. W – Kelsey Klassen

DYKE MARCH
Photo: Jonny Sopotiuk
Vancouver Dyke March celebrates 12 years Every year as Pride celebrations get underway and the Davie Street Village becomes the epicentre for all things loud and proud, over on the East Side, the Dyke March celebrates in its own way, taking to the streets. The grassroots organization first strutted down Commercial Drive in 2004. The small gathering was put together through the volunteer efforts of seven women recognizing a need for greater visibility for women in the LGBTQ community. The inaugural walk saw only a few hundred participants, but now, in its 12th year, the Vancouver Dyke March and Festival Society present this staple Pride event, drawing thousands of women, allies, family and friends. “The Dyke March gives women a place to come forward, meet interest-
40
ing, like-minded people and play important roles in creating change within the community,” explains former VDM president Sam Levy. Over the past decade, the event has seen a lot of change and growth. What started as a two-block saunter has evolved into a full-on march beginning at McSpadden Park, winding along half of The Drive to the festival site. Crowd-goers merge in Grandview Park for an afternoon of family fun where artisan vendors, drag performers and live music keep crowds entertained, all hosted by the hilarious Amy Wilding. “People like the differentiation of an event in East Van,” Levy says. The Dyke March wouldn’t be possible without its dedicated board of volunteers who meet monthly throughout the year.
’s UNofficial guide to Vancouver Pride 2015
Fundraising is imperative, and Diva’s Den – a women-for-women-centred strip show encouraging amateur performers to get on stage and let loose in a safe and supported environment – is a key financial contributor. As sexuality and gender identity become more fluid, the historical relevance of the Dyke March is more important than ever. Maintaining the history of pride, visibility and family –the principles on which the march was built – is integral in the ongoing fight against homophobia and transphobia. The Vancouver Dyke March starts at noon on Saturday, Aug. 1 at McSpadden Park, on Victoria Drive between East 4th and East 6th Avenue. ASL interpreters will be on site at the festival grounds at Grandview Park, and pets on leash are welcome, too! W –Kristyn Anthony
