Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare has a way with death. He can make it brutal. He can make it haunt our dreams. And, in Romeo and Juliet, he can make it seem oh so romantic. Written in the 1590s, his tale of two star-crossed lovers has enough passion and tragedy to inspire numerous retellings. Even though most readers are beyond the need of a spoiler alert, when the final scene unfolds during the upcoming production of Romeo and Juliet by the Winnipeg Royal Ballet, the wound of loss will hurt afresh. This will be the first time Amanda Green dances as principal ballerina in the role; she’s joined by guest artist Liang Xing of the National Ballet of China. Told in all its classic beauty, the choreography is by the late Rudi van Dantzig, who honours the lyrical poetry of Prokofiev’s score with his own deeply romantic interpretation of the story. It’s January 30 to February 1 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Tickets are $29 to $89 and available at Ticketmaster.ca. Réjean Brandt photo

Dragon’s eye view of China
Kilt up
There are times during Flight of the Dragon that you wonder if it’s not just the serpent-like dragon that’s been digitally created for the eight-minute film. The scenes of China are so jaw-dropping beautiful that you think you’re flying into a scene from Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. As the camera soars high above the Yangtze River, you marvel not only at how the experience mimics skydiving from the heavens but at the magnificent forces that have created such incredibly awe-inspiring vistas. This is the first time Flight of the Dragon has been shown outside of China and FlyOver Canada couldn’t be the more perfect host. With its 20m spherical screen and specially designed, tilting seats it comes so close to making you think you’re flying that you have to stop yourself from waving back at the people on the screen. What’s more, as part of the presentation at Canada Place you also get the equally impressive flight from coast to coast to coast of Canada. The stunning scenery has you yearning for more, more, more. The double feature runs until March 2. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and youth and $15 for children (at least 102cm tall), with discounts if you book at FlyOverCanada.com.
Haggis fans (an oxymoron if there ever was one) who like to celebrate the birth of Scottish poet Robbie Burns and Chinese New Year at the same time are going to have to trade their tartan for a some green velvet. Todd Wong has had to postpone his Gung Haggis Fat Choy dinner to March 16, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day. Go to GungHaggis.com for updates. If you like your Burns poetry without the sheep’s pluck (heart, liver and lungs), SFU’s Centre for Scottish Studies is hoping to set another world record (five hours, 41 minutes and 57 seconds) for the “longest continual recitation of Burns’ poetry and song” on January 25. It starts at 9am at the SFU Harbour Centre Campus (515 W. Hastings.) There is a handful of tickets left for Simon Fraser University Pipe Band’s ode at the Executive Plaza Hotel in Coquitlam January 25. The annual fundraiser includes 2012 world champions, the Robert Malcolm Memorial Pipe Band. Tickets are $70; call 604-942-3292.

Brent Butt has written and stars in No Clue, a mix of The Maltese Falcon and Pink Panther. He’s joined by Amy Smart (Butterfly Effect, Just Friends) as the dame who walks into his office and David Koechner (Anchorman and Talladega Nights.) Before it opens, his stand-up comedy tour makes a pitstop at The Vogue in Vancouver.
Brent Butt turns a corner Vancouver funny man is about to premiere his film noir-edy, No Clue, but first there is his cross-country comedy tour By Martha Perkins
W
hen Brent Butt was 12, he told his mother he wanted to be a stand-up comedian. “I often joke that she said, ‘Go do it outside,’” he says, just days away of the launch of his cross-Canada comedy tour. Not to let the truth get in the way of a good laugh, she actually took him seriously. “She didn’t scoff at it or pooh-pooh it. I just talked to her about it as she was doing the dishes.” Mrs. Butt, we thank you. Creating Canada’s much loved Corner Gas in his home province is proof enough that funny things can come out of Tisdale, Saskatchewan. (His mother knew it already, obviously, hence her encouragement of her youngest child’s seemingly far-fetched dream.) His upcoming 17-stop hopscotch stand-up comedy tour — including a show
at Vancouver’s Vogue Theatre on February 6 — will further cement this legacy. But it’s the March 7 release of Butt’s movie, No Clue, that will earn Mrs. Butt the award for best supporting mother. Butt wrote and is the lead character in the movie, directed by fellow Vancouverite Carl Bessai. It’s about Leo, a “speciality advertising” salesman — think pens with your plumber’s name on it — who’s happily working away in his office when this dame (Amy Smart) strides in, a “stone cold, gorgeous dish full of red-hot fox meat who was set up under a hottie lamp until it was smoking” kind of dame. Kyra thinks Leo’s a private detective but she’s unwittingly walked into wrong office. Smitten, Leo decides not to tell her the PI is on vacation and decides to take on the case — finding Kyra’s brother. When he discovers blood in the brother’s trashed apartment, he’s clueless in that what-in-the-heck-have-Igot-myself-into kind of way. Although the movie is funny, it’s not a comedy. As he told the cast and crew before filming started in Vancouver, “forget it’s a comedy. Just shoot it as a drama; then it’s funny just because my character does some funny things.” At first Butt was worried the jokes — ordering a glass of “chabolais” in a fancy
restaurant in hopes of impressing Kyra with his knowledge of wine — would “knee cap” the darker, grittier scenes, but he was “over the moon” when he first saw the rushes. Think Humphrey Bogart’s Philip Marlowe meets Peter Sellers’ Inspector Clouseau. “The movie was made to entertain,” he says during an interview at Calhoun’s, one of his favourite neighbourhood haunts. Maybe it’s his proximity to water but Butt uses a lot of swimming analogies to describe Leo’s character: “You don’t know how far you can swim until you’re drowning in the middle of the ocean. You’ll take more strokes than you ever thought you could.” Butt is calling his comedy tour “Almost a Movie Star” in deference to this addition to his resume but he’s also happy to be going back to his roots as a stand-up comic. There’s nothing but a microphone, a stool and a glass of water on the stage with him. He likes to gauge the mood of the audience as he stands in the shadows listening to the warm-up act, trying to figure out “what will make it angry and what will make it roll over and let you rub its belly?” Being alone with an audience expecting you to make them laugh seems a pretty intimidating task, but Butt has his inner 12-year-old’s sense of anticipation. “I’ve been doing this for 25 years and it’s fresh
and exciting every time.” Although there are many people who still mourn the end of Corner Gas, Butt needs to find ways of taking his imagination out for a walk. While he respects the show, and feels blessed to have been able to do it for 107 episodes, he didn’t want Corner Gas to overstay its welcome. “You don’t ever want someone to hand you your coat at the party.” He will always be grateful to Corner Gas for the way it pumped up his career and invites his fans to ride shotgun as he steered his career towards the next destination. “There are 107 episodes of Corner Gas and you can see it three times a day on TV [as reruns],” he says, shortly after someone walks by his table at Calhoun’s and says, “Corner Gas” in passing. (Earlier, two construction workers outside Calhoun’s were debating whether or not that was Brent Butt who had walked in.) “It’s there but I can’t keep going back to it.” After watching No Clue, no one will dare want to hold him back. Hot Thespian Action and more at Sketchfest Men, where people are, like, pregnant and smoking. Chris: We’ll see how that goes.
By Kelsey Klassen
I
What is your earliest memory of comedy: Chris: In Grade 4, I used to write down Jerry Seinfeld’s jokes when he would do stand-up on Seinfeld. My thinking was that when he retired and everyone forgot about him, I would be able to perform this material. Peter: Mine was probably high school. It sounds overly philosophical, but it was to avoid getting bullied. I did a show called A Room with an Alan — a BBC radio play. I was the only one in the drama class that could sort of do a British accent, because my mom is super British, so I got to say ‘Cock, piss, partridge!’ on stage. And high school kids? Could not deal with that. It was the funniest shit they’d ever seen.
n its first year up to bat, Vancouver Sketchfest is proving the old sports adage, ‘If you build it, they will come.’ Peter Carlone, the festival’s artistic director, has witnessed local comedians coming out of the corn since he first put out the call to audition. “As soon as I asked people to come forward with their sketch groups, we had groups that I previously wasn’t aware of — groups from all over the place, like Assaulted Fish from Burnaby — coming in. There were a good five or six that I didn’t know and I was like, ‘Oh! Here we go. Okay.’” Sketch comedy talent pools already dot the Vancouver landscape like watering holes, attracting new groups and earning loyal fans, which in turn attract more newcomers to the water’s edge. “I’m seeing a growth of shows,” Carlone, one half of Fringe Festival favourite Peter n’ Chris, confirms. “Everything from Clusterfun to the China Cloud comedy. And East Van Comedy is adding more shows to their docket.” Carlone teamed up with Instant Theatre’s acclaimed artistic director Alistair Cook to lure the best in national and international sketch comedy to Granville Island this weekend. “With Sketchfest, the focus is on the groups. It’s almost like a tradeshow of comedy,” he jokes. “You walk around and see what everybody has to offer. I’m hoping to get a broader audience that isn’t maybe the built-in comedy crowd. People that just want something to do for the weekend, to have a couple of drinks and laugh.”
What is your definition of sketch comedy? Peter: A lot of times people assume it’s like improv and standup, but it’s Saturday Night Live or Kids in the Hall or Monty Python. Chris: The thing about sketch that I like is you get to do the same thing over and over, and you can really hone a joke down to the word. You get to be scientific about comedy. Sort of like stand-up... Do you do that as well? Peter: I’ve done it a total of three times. Chris: The audience tends to be more hostile. Peter: Or there’s an attitude of, like, ‘Say jokes, funny man.’ As opposed to sketch comedy, where everybody is just looking for something silly and the laughter comes easier. Chris: I don’t like doing stand-up because I’m at an open mic level, and those open mics are always the worst. You go in and the standup’s not having fun because the audience isn’t laughing. So it’s like, ‘Who’s having fun here?? No one is having fun.’
More with Peter n’ Chris Five acts you can’t wait to see during Sketchfest: Peter: Aside from us... Mark and Kyle from Picnicface, for sure. Chris: Charles and Ladystache will be phenomenal. Peter: I’ve got a local one I’m excited about. Friday the 24th: Andrew Barber, Cam & Colin and Pump Trolley. Chris: There’s so many people coming in from out of town, and the people who tour know what they’re doing. Like Hot Thespian Action, they’re a Canadian Comedy-nominated group. Peter: Local group Sunday Service is also pretty hot.
So the basis of your show is at least you two are having fun. Chris: Yeah! Peter: Absolutely!

Vancouver Sketchfest, with more than 25 sketch comedy groups from around the world, runs January 23-25 at various venues on Granville Island. Tickets start at $15; VancouverSketchfest.com.
What route do you recommend for the home joker? Peter: Instant Theatre has some beginner-level character and improv workshops that are a pretty great place to start (InstantTheatre.com/classes). That’s how you become a writer, you start improv-ing and realize you just have to write the funny ones down. Chris: We also found the Fringe festivals to be a great avenue. That’s our bread and butter all summer. Do you ever tackle political subjects? Peter: Only if it serves the joke. I love to be political and talk about that stuff, but the comedy that I want to do is more positive. It’s not just a desire to be accessible — we don’t want to be lowest common denominator, Two and a Half Men, or whatever — but we like to be tolerant and accepting. Chris: People have said lately that we do shows that are like live-action Pixar, so it’s not really political. Peter: In our new one we poke fun at the idea that we’re all obsessed these days with period pieces, and how we’re allowed to be kind of sexist or racist in them — like Deadwood or Mad

North Shore mourns loss of rescue leader Tim Jones By Jane Seyd
H
e was fearless, obstinate and a born “alpha” who never let the niceties of protocol get in the way of getting the job done. It is to those qualities that hundreds of people who’ve been lost or in trouble in the North Shore mountains over the last 25 years probably owe their lives. This week the North Shore is mourning Tim Jones, the longtime leader of North Shore Rescue, who died suddenly while returning from the team’s Mount Seymour cabin on Sunday. Jones, 57, had been at a social event at the cabin and was walking back to the parking lot with daughter Taylor and another member of North Shore Rescue when he reportedly said, “Hang on a minute” and collapsed. Those at the scene started CPR immediately and paramedics, firefighters and members of North Shore Rescue raced to the scene. Jones was rushed to Lions Gate Hospital but doctors were unable to save him. City of North Vancouver Fire Chief Dan Pistilli was one of the many first responders who knew Jones who raced to the hospital Sunday night. Pistilli said fellow North Shore Rescue teammates and Jones’ colleagues from the BC Ambulance Service were in shock. “It was tough to see them,” he said. “It really hit home who it was.” Jones was remembered as a community hero this week. “He was tenacious. He had a really strong will,” said Doug Pope, spokesman for North Shore Rescue. “It helped in a rescue situation. When Tim was in control it made it easier to do our jobs.” Those who worked closely with

Jones recalled his larger-than-life personality. “What drove Tim was saving lives. He didn’t let anything else get in his way,” said Jeff Yarnold of North Shore Rescue. Jones worked a regular job as an advanced life support paramedic, but could usually be counted on to drop everything when someone was lost or in trouble and lead a team of experienced backcountry rescuers into often treacherous terrain. During one of his first rescue operations, Jones was lowered from a helicopter into a ravine on Mount Seymour to rescue a hiker who’d fallen and injured himself. Years later, he spoke about the mixture of fear and adrenaline he felt when the helicopter was caught in a fog bank. When the rescue was finished, he was hooked. Jones and another team member were the first ones in when snowshoer Chris Morley fell 200 feet down a steep ice slope above Theta Lake on Mount Seymour in January 2007. Jones leaped out of the helicopter as darkness fell. John Blown and his advance team made it through with supplies the next day just as the rest of the rescue was called off due to treacherous conditions. The men ended up spending two nights in a snow cave with the injured and hypothermic Morley while a storm howled around them. “We could hear the avalanches coming down around us,” said Blown. Both Blown and Yarnold were with Jones again when the North Shore Rescue team pulled off the high-risk rescue of snowshoer Sebastian Boucher on Cypress in December 2012. “Everyone was pretty exhausted and we were starting to lose hope,” said Blown. Then they got word
that tracks had been spotted from the helicopter. At the time, Jones was at his daughter’s bedside in the hospital. Blown called him and said, “’We need you here.’ “He ran down to the police station in Vancouver and said he needed to get to the North Shore for a rescue.” Officers gave Jones an escort to the airport where the helicopter team picked him up, dropping him off in challenging conditions. They set up ropes and began to rappel into the dark, eventually finding Boucher near the bottom of a 300-foot waterfall. When the military chopper arrived to airlift the men to safety, Jones was “the last guy out.” Jones would usually assemble the team first and get authorization later, said Yarnold. “If he followed the book there would be a lot of people who wouldn’t be here today.” Jones was known for being sometimes tough on team members, calling them out in a dressing down he called “the shred.” The “shred” happened “if you did something stupid or unsafe,” said Blown. “He made sure we were operating at the highest level at all times.” It wasn’t uncommon for Jones to work a night shift as a paramedic, then go on a rescue call. For Jones, helping people was “almost like a drug,” said Murray. “It was all encompassing. . . . In a full platoon barrage way. Not in a Mother Teresa way.” A celebration of life is planned for noon on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver. Details are at northshorerescue.com. Jane Seyd is a reporter with the North Shore News. A longer version of this story is at NSNews.com.
Dissident associations win injunction against park board By Sandra Thomas
T
he BC Supreme Court has temporarily halted the attempted evictions of six community centre associations by the Vancouver Park Board. In a decision brought down Jan. 17, BC Supreme Court justice Gregory Bowden ruled Hastings, Kensington, Kerrisdale, Killarney, Riley Park Hillcrest and Sunset community centre associations can stay put until a court case is heard, possibly in 2015. The Vision Vancouver-dominated park board served the six dissident associations with eviction notices last fall after the group launched several legal proceedings in BC Supreme Court regarding an interim joint operating agreement. The associations launched the first lawsuit in September, asking for an injunction against what was initially the forced use of the OneCard, a universal access pass that eliminates the need for individual community centre memberships. According to the provincial Societies Act, the associations must have a membership list to qualify as a non-profit society. The park board also wanted to centralize programs and services at community centres across the city, which the associations say isn’t practical. As well, the board wants to create a new financial model which, when first proposed, would have seen all of the associations pooling their revenues and that money being diverted to “have not” community centres. A new financial model has yet to be decided and negotiations are ongoing in cementing a permanent joint operating agreement. The associations then accused the park board of alleged violations of their joint operating agreements and filed for damages, which was followed by eviction notices from the park board. The third court proceeding was a successful request for an injunction to temporarily lift the eviction notices until the court case regarding the joint operating agreement
can be decided. Ainslie Kwan, president of the Killarney Community Centre Society, said in a press release: “This decision is a win for all non-profit community associations across the city, including those not involved in this legal action. It means not only can we continue providing our services and programs in the centres we built and have jointly operated for decades, but that the park board cannot bully community volunteers when they aren’t getting their way.” According to the associations, with the injunction in place it’s business as usual for patrons of the six community centres and services and programs will continue as always. Based on comments made during various court proceedings in 2013, the associations hope the park board will drop its efforts to evict the six groups. Last Friday park board chair Niki Sharma told the Vancouver Courier she’s unaware of any promise to drop the eviction should the associations win this injunction. On Monday, Sharma added the board hopes the six will return to the negotiating table alongside the city’s 12 other community centres. “Our position has always been we’ve wanted to negotiate with those six since the beginning, even in light of the lawsuit,” said Sharma. “The new joint operating agreement is still on the table.” In response to the decision, Dean Davison, legal counsel for the six associations, said, “The court clearly recognized that the relationship between these parties is unique. One party cannot decide arbitrarily how the two parties should work together, nor can one party decide unilaterally what should happen if the two cannot work together.” In the past year, NPA commissioner Melissa De Genova unsuccessfully put forward motions calling for community consultation on the new joint operating agreement with the support of fellow NPAer John Coupar.

High-tech fabric creates a buzz UBC researchers get grant to create a material that could harvest and store solar power By Cheryl Rossi
P
eyman Servati’s passion for scientific projects — including tents that store solar power and shirts that monitor heart rates — paid off last week. Federal Minister of State for Science and Technology Greg Rickford featured the work of the associate professor of electrical and computer engineering when he announced $43 million in research grants for 23 universities across the country at UBC earlier this month. Servati’s solar cell and bio-sensing textile projects received $1.03 million. “I have been working on flexible electronics for a long time,” Servati said. “[I have] passion about it, basically making real contributions to the life of people in both of these projects.” Servati works with Frank Ko who’s an expert in nanofibres. Their team is developing fabric
that could harvest and store solar energy to be used as electricity. A tent made of such material could be used in remote areas and the developing world, or by the military and campers. “Maybe in the future we can integrate in clothing so it enables people to wear stuff that can charge mobile [devices such as] our health monitoring sensors,” he said. Servati is working with colleagues to create clothing or flexible, fine material that could be attached to one’s skin to monitor vital signs. This furthers Ko’s earlier work of creating a “skin” for aircraft that could sense the environment and detect small cracks on a plane’s surface. ReFleX Wireless, a BC-based company created by three UBC undergraduates who have gained attention for their wireless health monitoring systems, is also involved. Kendall Ho, an emergency room doctor at UBC Hospital, is also delving into new technologies. “What they see is a great potential for wearable electronics that can monitor the health and vital signs of patients. Suppose that somebody goes to an emergency room and they had a cardiac issue,
UBC’s Peyman Servati is working on developing a bio-sensing material that can harvest and store energy, as well as monitor health. Dan Toulgoet photo if they wear a vest or very comfortable shirt that monitors their signs, if something, even a slight thing happens, it alerts the doctors,” Servati said.
Servati and Ko have already created shirts with integrated sensors. Servati expects early solar products related to their research could hit the market in five to 10 years,
with supple sensing products arriving in five years. Ten UBC projects received $9 million in research funds from the federal government.

The ‘real deal’ on Dine Out menus
T
ourism Vancouver’s Dine Out Vancouver Festival is in full swing until February 2. I wrote about the “Do’s and Don’t’s” for patrons and restaurateurs last week and a few points sparked some interest. I mentioned how portions and ingredients can be altered to meet the set prices for Dine Out, or how some menus are created exclusively for the festival. With the latter, the pro is that the menu becomes special for the event and there might be new items to try at your favourite restaurant. The con is that it might not be representative of the menu on a regular night. I took the liberty of calling 45 (selected randomly) of the 263 participating DOVF restaurants to see who was offering regular menu options on their Dine Out menu. I also asked about portion by Mijune Pak sizes to see how the food would compare to a regular night. It is a good indicator of the “real deals” because you can go on their regular menu and calculate prices if you really want to see who offers the best value. That is if you’re looking at the food alone and not ambiance and service, etc.... I called 15 restaurants in each category — $18, $28, and $38 for three courses. In the $38 category, the 15 restaurants had an exclusive Dine Out menu, or items were “not too much smaller” if they were also featured on the regular menu. In the $28 category it was easier to find restaurants serving similar items on both menus, but most were new menus. By far the easiest was the $18 category restaurants. Most are serving almost the same menu for Dine Out and the same portion sizes. Dine Out Vancouver is not just about the deal, and a “real deal” is not just in the price. Many $38 menu restaurants are a good value since you can’t walk out of most of these restaurants without spending $70+/per person. But if you are just about snagging the food at the right price, then the following restaurants aren’t changing much of their menu and keeping portions the same.

Chefs turn tables on online critics By Martha Perkins
I
t was the chefs’ turn to critique all the people who come into their restaurants, take photos of every course and then post instant, sometimes hurtful, reviews on social media. “I have one request,” chef Scott Jaeger of The Pear Tree in Burnaby told the crowd at 6 Course Discourse on Monday night. “Eat it before you tweet it.” This prompted, of course, many people at the Dine Out Vancouver event at the Edgewater Casino to take out their smartphones and tweet about his comments. (See photo.) Julian Bond, who has taught dozens of this city’s chefs at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, had a similar request. He wants diners to think before they write. “Everyone’s a critic and they don’t understand how powerful it is,” he said. “My vision is that we only talk well about a restaurant. If a restaurant is bad, don’t talk about it and it will go away on its own. Some comments can tear people’s day apart.” Bond said he turns away applicants who want to take cooking classes so they can be on the Food Network. This
prompted Vikram Vij, a popular Food Network judge, to say, “You go to school to become a doctor, lawyer or chef but you don’t got to school to become a celebrity.” The evening, hosted by Follow Me Foodie and WE Vancouver columnist Mijune Pak, started with ticket holders sampling food and wine from some of our favourite restaurants and wineries. Six chefs — John Bishop, Julian Bond, Tina Fineza, Scott Jaeger, Hamid Salamian and Vikram Vij — then talked about what drives them as chefs. Some of them felt uncomfortable coming out from behind the saucepan but by the time they too had had a glass of wine or two while they listened to the other presenters, the Q and A which followed was like sitting around a dinner table and swapping stories from the trenches. Asked about the biggest challenge facing Vancouver restaurants, Bishop, the culinary veteran, said that he could cope with recessions and trends but what he really needs on West 4th is easier parking. Vij said he’d like Vancouver to be more proud of our restaurant scene. We have amazing access to produce from nearby fields and oceans, and “once we are proud of ourselves, everyone will be proud of us.”

Le Gavroche closes Hawksworth to open 2nd restaurant #CupOfWarmth helps Food Bank ‘World’s Best Chef’ coming to Vancouver Food trucks take over VAG plaza Paula Deen gets hot chocolate treatment
This week’s dish is both a tease and a memory, since, unfortunately, it’s no longer available — but for a very good reason. Executive chef Jefferson Alvarez of Secret Location has launched his revolutionary 300 Dishes in 30 Days. Running through February 15, each day will see a new 10-course set menu available for dinner for $75, including alcoholic beverages. No dish will ever be repeated, and no menus will be posted in advance. Not for the gastronically faint of heart, but worth more than one visit, as it’s not just any chef who can have me raving about edible clay (among other things).
SCENE | HEARD After more than 35 years of serving up fine French food to Vancouver diners, Le Gavroche has closed its doors. A bailiff’s sign on the door of the converted heritage home where the restaurant was located indicates over $80,000 in rent is owed. The former owner and founder, Manuel Ferreira, sold the restaurant last year to his executive chef, Robert Guest, who converted the traditional French menu to one that was highly contemporary and experimental…perhaps too experimental for Vancouver, in hindsight. David Hawksworth, celebrated chef and owner of the award-winning Hawksworth Restaurant, is planning to open a second restaurant (name TBA) in downtown Vancouver in 2015. Look for a more casual concept loosely designed around shared dishes, with local and Italian influences. Oyama Sausage is holding their annual Choucroute Festival January 23 to 26. Get thee to the Vancouver Wine Fest! City Cellar by Kurtis Kolt
W
hile this year’s edition of the Vancouver International Wine Festival doesn’t start until February 24, I’m sharing my recommendations of can’t-miss events sooner than later since, at press time, more than half of the tastings, seminars and dinners have sold out. I’m sure a big chunk of this year’s popularity is due to France being the theme country and sparkling wine holding court as the general wine-style focus. In saying this, you’ll definitely want to hit the International Festival Tasting Room at least once during the Thursday, Friday or Saturday editions, and enjoy the opportunity to sip 780 wines from 178 wineries and 14 countries. All the information’s over at VanWineFest.ca, including tickets for these three events I’m heartily advising you nab sooner than later. France Bubbly Party | Tuesday, February 25 | Ginger 62 | 9-11pm | $65 I love casual, nighttime stand-up events — there’s just something so cosmopolitan about them. Besides the fun DJ and
lounge atmosphere, there’s a raw bar for snacking and a host of sparkling wines and Champagnes from the likes of Pierre Sparr, Lanson and H. Blin. Who said being civilized couldn’t be fun? SIP THIS: Zinck Crémant d’Alsace Brut ($23.99, BC Liquor Stores) is a tremendous value that you can keep top-of-mind all year long. Fresh, crunchy apples with lemon and sea-spray for under 25 bucks makes it a bargain. The Heart of Burgundy | Wednesday, February 26 | Coast Restaurant | 6:30pm | $155 What a great opportunity to feast on Chef Pedro Gonzalez’s local fare while tucking into many a bottle of Burgundy from world-famous vineyards. Find out why most wine geeks go to the storied region when they’re asked for their all-time favourite wines. SIP THIS: Latour Corton 2010 Charlemagne Grand Cru ($200-250, various vintages, BC Liquor/Private Stores) comes from stony, limestone soil and is the poster child for pitch-perfect elegant oak treatment in a stunning vintage.
Mediterranean Mingler | Saturday, March 1 | VCC West, Level 3 | Noon–2pm | $80 With a backdrop of the North Shore Mountains and plenty of snacking to be had during this grazing lunch, it’s no wonder it increases in popularity each year. A completely different atmosphere from the sometimes-frenetic International Tasting Room, there’s a much more leisurely pace at this event where you’ll have the chance to chat with winery principals from some of the biggest names in the south of France, like Paul Mas, Gerard Bertrand, Chapoutier and more. SIP THIS: There’s fresh and lively Southern French expression to be found in a bottle of Chapoutier Bila-Haut Cotes-du-Roussillon ($15.99, BC Liquor Stores), which blends Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault while keeping things full of purple fruit and herbs at a chipper 13 per cent alcohol.

Make your dream music video Following on the heels of the Summer Music Video Fund, Public Records and TELUS are launching the Winter 2014 Music Video Fund — a grant program that supports and gives exposure to emerging Canadian musicians and filmmakers. The grants offer musicians and filmmakers across BC and Alberta up to $7,500 to produce music videos this winter, while retaining full rights to their content. The final music videos will appear on TELUS Optik Local and online at telus.com/optiklocal. “We were blown away by the response to the Summer 2013 Music Video Fund — thousands of artists joined the community, and hundreds more applied for grants,” says Dan Costello, co-founder of Public Records. To be eligible for a grant, participants must be musicians or filmmakers from the following communities: Metro Vancouver (including Whistler, and now Sechelt & Gibsons), Victoria, Nanaimo, Prince George, Kelowna, Penticton (now also covering Oliver and Osoyoos), Kamloops, Vernon (now also encompassing Salmon Arm & Armstrong), Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie. ancouver real estate ranks as the second most expensive in the world as a multiple of the average resident’s income for the second year in a row, according to St. Louis-based research firm Demographia. Hong Kong remains the world’s most expensive real estate market, with properties selling for an average 14.9 times the average resident’s annual income. Vancouver earned the No. 2 spot thanks to its 10.3 multiple of average income. In 2011, the city ranked No. 3, behind both Hong Kong and Sydney. San Francisco this year passed Sydney to become the world’s No. 3 most expensive real estate market with a 9.2 multiple of average income. No other Canadian cities ranked in the top 10, which includes San Jose (8.7 multiple), Melbourne (8.4 multiple), Auckland (8 multiple), San Diego (7.9 multiple), Los Angeles (7.7 multiple) and London (7.3 multiple).
agricultural land reserve (ALR) is largely responsible for high housing prices in Metro Vancouver. “The leadership of BC has placed the preservation of agricultural land at a higher priority than the standard of living of people and the minimization of poverty,” Cox said. He accepted that Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has taken some action with his housing affordability task force and initiatives such as more laneway housing. But, he said those efforts at most could achieve minor gains. “Forcing people to live on granny flats in the backyard represents a lower standard of living,” Cox said. “The basic reason Vancouver house prices are so unaffordable is that you do not allow a competitive market to operate on the fringe. That has been the story in every first world metropolitan area that has similar problems.” A longer version of this article is on BIV.com

movies Chris Pine and Keira Knightley star in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Larry Horricks photo
Ryan spy saga a complete reboot JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT
Starring Chris Pine, Keira Knightley Directed by Kenneth Branagh It may be a post-9/11 landscape but there is still ample appetite for CIA anThor Diakow alyst-turned-spy Jack Ryan in today’s movie world. Late author Tom Clancy’s iconic character has been played by three previous actors (Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck) in four separate films. This time around, rising star Chris Pine teams up with Thor director Kenneth Branagh (who also serves as the main villain) for a complete reboot. After a brisk setup that cuts right to the chase, we see Jack get shot down in a helicopter while serving in Afghanistan,
complete some lengthy rehab after sustaining serious injuries and finally go to work for the CIA as a covert analyst who uncovers a Russian plot to collapse the U.S. Economy. Casting is always key and Shadow Recruit gets full marks in that department — Pine proves a formidable and genuinely likeable hero while Keira Knightley provides some beauty with brains. Kevin Costner establishes the mentor role extremely well. The film’s story doesn’t reinvent the wheel but recalls what audiences love about the Bond or Bourne franchises. Unfortunately, the action sequences are far too frantically edited to register any sense of what is happening on screen. Thankfully though, Shadow Recruit has enough intelligence and old-school thrills to compensate.

Gentle, genuine Romeo and Juliet tale GABRIELLE
Starring Gabrielle Marion-Rivard, Alexandre Landry Directed by Louise Archambault As we’re introduced to Gabrielle (Gabrielle Marion-Rivard), she’s in full voice and visibly ecstatic, singing at choir practice while exchanging flirtatious glances with the mutually smitten Martin (Alexandre Landry). And while such reverie seems to come naturally to this young woman, it’s increasingly harder to come by in Louise Archambault’s moving, measured drama concerning her fiercely fought struggle for independence. Born with Williams syndrome, Gabrielle routinely finds herself constantly denied the experiences that are commonplace in the pop songs she belts out with her special needs choir. As Archambault illustrates, while most parents experience some measure of discomfort in acknowledging their children’s sexuality, that level of unease can red-line should those progeny be developmentally disabled. Consequently, Gabrielle and Martin discover that their infatuation has been cruelly deemed unacceptable by influential loved ones based largely on their chromosomal makeup. Offering a wholly original spin on the Romeo and Juliet dynamic, Archambault evidently sympathizes with her protagonist’s yearning for the freedom to act on her desires. Yet, her storytelling remains clear-eyed, raising
Gabrielle Marion-Rivard and VincentGuillaume Otis star in Quebec director Louise Archambault’s movie Gabrielle. Philippe Bossé photo questions about what’s achievable. Marion-Rivard (who also suffers from Williams syndrome) is a wonderfully expressive performer, engagingly careening between pride and panic as Gabrielle undertakes challenges in hopes of proving her capabilities. While much of the film hinges on lowkey drama, gentle comedy and well-defined relationships, Archambault does indulge in a showy climax featuring Gabrielle’s choir joining Quebec music icon Robert Charlebois for a rendition of his swoon-inducing (and thematically significant) “Lindberg.” However, the most genuinely rousing moments are to be found its more graceful depictions of minor triumphs. — Curtis Woloschuk
Devil’s Knot adds little to tragic story DEVIL’S KNOT
Starring Reese Witherspoon, Colin Firth Directed Atom Egoyan When Atom Egoyan has dipped his toe into the mainstream in the past, it’s typically taken the form of tawdry psychological thrillers such as the recent Where the Truth Lies or Chloe. While hardly successes by any traditional measure, they’ve at least offered some intermittent amusement with their stilted eroticism and wayward performances. While Devil’s Knot marks yet another misfire for the Canadian auteur, there’s no perverse pleasure to be gleaned on this occasion. Instead, there’s only bewilderment. Devil’s Knot tells the story of the wrongfully convicted West Memphis Three that’s already been detailed both exceptionally and exhaustively in four documentaries (including West of Memphis, which is barely out of the rearview). This dramatization seems to exist solely for
STEPHEN BURKE
those fickle viewers adverse to non-fiction films and more inclined to take an interest in true stories if they feature a star like Reese Witherspoon masquerading as a mourning blue collar mother (achieved through a frumpy sweatshirt and somnambulistic bearing). As a private investigator, Colin Firth is a far more active participant on screen, trying to make sense of how three teenage outcasts came to be accused of the gruesome murders of three young boys. This allows Egoyan to stitch together the particulars of the trialturned-travesty-of-justice but they fail to cohere into a compelling narrative. A harrowing story hinging on rampant prejudice and witch hunt-level hysteria has been bled of its combustive emotions and reduced to an inert courtroom drama. In turn, the only outrage here is derived from watching Egoyan continue to squander his considerable talent. — Curtis Woloschuk

Do you know this cat?
E
very once in a while we get a phone call into the newsroom that tugs at our hardened heartstrings. This week, a good samaritan called in on press day to report she had found a cat while walking to work. Not just any cat, though. A stuffed, toy cat. With just enough wear-and-tear to reveal that it is probably missed dearly. We’d love to help reunite this wayward companion with its rightful owner. Email kelsey@wevancouver.com with which bridge you suspect Kitty Walksalot was picked up on, and we’ll put you in touch with his foster mom for verification. Even if it’s not your cat, feel free to email in your own stories about the stuffed heroes of your childhood. And with that bit of hard news out of the way, we leave you this: “Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.” The Velveteen Rabbit
An uplifting encounter To the many passersby who came immediately to my assistance when I collapsed onto the sidewalk at Davie and Cardero. They were all so kind and helpful, and really restored my faith — they propped me up and called an ambulance. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone. A grateful Westender

What I don’t always talk about is the great on-road driving capabilities. The Toyota 4Runner hugs the road and the bucket seats hug you. It is very comfortable to drive and you feel safe driving it. The suspension and shocks give you a firm ride but not enough to give you that washboard effect. Vision while driving is superb, with little to no blind spots. The thick steering wheel and responsive steering makes you feel like you are driving a car. Verdict The Toyota 4Runner could be on just about everybody’s wish list, given its on and off-road capabilities.

Lots of ‘ohh-ahh, what a car’ at Detroit show Detroit - Flocks of international journalists roamed the floors of COBO Hall in downtown Detroit on the occasion of the 25th annual North American International Auto Show. With a plethora of automotive goodness under one roof, it’s hard to narrow down which ones to focus on. After all, there are concepts, production vehicles and much more. And there are a lot of them. To kick things off on my list, let’s start with some concepts.
of information was released but you can bet your bottom dollar that it’ll be fast. There are large air inlets, 18inch wheels and the unmistakable MINI silhouette and face. It’s built as much for the road as it is the track. Did I mention it’ll be fast? Until the production vehicle is produced, we will just have to be patient and wait for pricing, specs and all the fun stuff.

presence. And also packs a healthy dose of 315 horsepower from a turbocharged, 4-cylinder powerplant. The Korean carmaker mentions that there are no pending plans to bring this particular car to market, however, Kia has a history of delivering production vehicles that bear a strong resemblance to the concept that preceded them, and the GT4 Stinger provides a possible and highly provocative glimpse into Kia’s future. And if it’s the future we’re after, it looks good. Moving from fantasy to fiction, we have the Honda Fit. It’s a spectacular little car and has been a popular selling vehicle in Canada. And it’s all new for 2015. Up front, the Fit sports a new grille and headlight design. Around back, there are rear reflectors and LED taillights run along the hatch with a chrome tailgate garnish and rear diffuser. Furthermore, Honda keep’s their exclusive Magic Seat, which offer multiple configurable seating positions. Translation, the Fit provides an unrivaled 52.7 cubic feet of cargo space when the second row seats are folded flat. It also gets a bump in horses. Included is an all-new directinjected 1.5-liter DOHC i-VTEC engine producing 130 horsepower and 114 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s an increase of 13 horsepower and 8 lb.-ft. of torque in comparison to the outgoing engine. The VW Golf R is no stranger to Canadians. It has been sold here in the Great White North for the last couple of years. But they’re kind of like the tooth fairy. You hear about them, but you rarely see them. Why? Because they were sold in limited quantities. Meaning only a few hundred were allocated for Canada. But I’m hoping such is not the case with the upcoming 2015 Golf R. Making its debut at the show, you can liken it to a donut. A donut that is fat free, calorie free and has sprinkles on top. Yes, it’s just that delicious. The all-wheel drive 5-door has plenty of appeal. But with the option of outfitting it with a 6-speed DSG with paddle shifters (it was previously only available with a 6-speed manual,) it might just reach out to a few more takers. That’s if we can get our hands on them. Oh, and there’s an allotment of 290 horsepower, too. Yum. Speaking of cars with four cylinders and all-wheel drive, the Golf R has some competition lined up in the form of the Subaru WRX STI. With a 305 horsepower horizontallyopposed turbocharged boxer engine, multi-differential controllable all-wheel-drive system, and a six-speed gearbox, those looking to take shortcuts off the beaten path can do it. And do it in style. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Rick suddenly and unexpectedly left us on January 12, 2014 at age 58. He is survived by his mother Lonnie and siblings Randy, Debbie (Howard), Rob (Colleen), nieces and nephews Cory, Megan, Kelsey and Nicholas, and his great - nephews Kaedon and Ezra. He is predeceased by his father Norman (2013). Rick grew up in the Guildford area of Surrey. He graduated from North Surrey Secondary School in 1973. It was there that he met lifelong friends through the music program, fueled by the energy of music teachers Murray and Springer. Rick was passionate about music and used his “big” voice in numerous musical theatre productions over the years. Rick was full of life. He loved his city, Vancouver, and actively followed its growth and evolution. He loved nothing better than to take his sibs and friends on a walking tour of the city. He was especially knowledgeable of the history and architecture of the city. Many a night was spent debating civic politics over a fine scotch and cigar. Rick loved his West End community and the Friday nights and Sunday afternoons with the boys at the “Pumps”. His summer was planned around Pride and the Fireworks festivals. Rick’s annual road trip with best friend Allan was the highlight of the year. The two would travel, after extensive planning, the western US exploring the national parks, geological formations, and hiking trails. Rick loved all things natural, especially his geodes and orchids. Rick was happy and at peace with his place in the world. He loved and was loved by family and friends. He will be missed. A Celebration of Rick’s life will be held 1 pm, Saturday, January 25, at Victory Memorial Park, 14831 28th Ave. Surrey. All Rick’s friends are welcome.

horoscopes Free Will Astrology by Rob Brezsny r 8FFL PG +BOVBSZ
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): Actor Casey Affleck appreciates the nurturing power of his loved ones. “My family would be supportive,” he says, “if I said I wanted to be a Martian, wear only banana skins, make love to ashtrays, and eat tree bark.” I’d like to see you cultivate allies like that in the coming months, Aries. Even if you have never had them before, there’s a good chance they will be available. For best results, tinker with your understanding of who your family might be. Redefine what “community” means to you.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): Author John Koenig says we often regard emotions as positive or negative. Feeling respect is good, for example, while being wracked with jealousy is bad. But he favors a different standard for evaluating emotions: how intense they are. At one end of the spectrum, everything feels blank and blah, even the big things. “At the other end is wonder,” he says, “in which everything feels alive, even the little things.” Your right and proper goal right now, Taurus, is to strive for the latter kind: full-on intensity and maximum vitality. Luckily, the universe will be conspiring to help you achieve that goal.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): At her blog otherwordly.tumblr.com, Yee-Lum Mak defines the Swedish word resfeber this way: “the restless race of the traveler’s heart before the journey begins, when anxiety and anticipation are tangled together.” You might be experiencing resfeber right now, Gemini. Even if you’re not about to depart on a literal trip, I’m guessing you will soon start wandering out on a quest or adventure that will bring your heart and mind closer together. Paradoxically, your explorations will teach you a lot about being better grounded. Bon voyage!

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): How does a monarch butterfly escape its chrysalis when it has finished gestating? Through tiny holes in the skin of the chrysalis, it takes big gulps of air and sends them directly into its digestive system, which expands forcefully. Voila! Its body gets so big it breaks free. When a chick is ready to emerge from inside its egg, it has to work harder than the butterfly. With its beak, it must peck thousands of times at the shell, stopping to rest along the way because the process is so demanding. According to my analysis, Cancerian, you’re nearing the final stage before your metaphorical emergence from gestation. Are you more like the butterfly or chick?
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): Whatever adventures may flow your way in the coming weeks, Libra, I hope you will appreciate them for what they are: unruly but basically benevolent; disruptive in ways that catalyze welcome transformations; a bit more exciting than you might like, but ultimately pretty fun. Can you thrive on the paradoxes? Can you delight in the unpredictability? I think so. When you look back at these plot twists two months from now, I bet you’ll see them as entertaining storylines that enhance the myth of your hero’s journey. You’ll understand them as tricky gifts that have taught you valuable secrets about your soul’s code.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): “I’m not sure where to go from here. I need help.” I encourage you to say those words out loud, Leo. Even if you’re not sure you believe they’re true, act as if they are. Why? Because I think it would be healthy for you to express uncertainty and ask for assistance. It could free you from the unrealistic notion that you’ve got to figure everything out by yourself. And this would bring you, as if by magic, interesting offers and inquiries. In other words, if you confess your neediness, you will attract help. Some of it will be useless, but most of it will be useful.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21): Manufacturing a jelly bean is not a quick, slam-bam process. It’s a five-step procedure that takes a week. Each seemingly uncomplicated piece of candy has to be built up layer by layer, with every layer needing time to fully mature. I’m wondering if maybe there’s a metaphorically similar kind of work ahead for you, Scorpio. May I speculate? You will have to take your time, proceed carefully, and maintain a close attention to detail as you prepare a simple pleasure.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): Dogs have a superb sense of smell, much better than we humans. But ours isn’t bad. We can detect certain odors that have been diluted to one part in five billion. For example, if you were standing next to two Olympic-sized swimming pools, and only one contained a few drops of the chemical ethyl mercaptan, you would know which one it was. I’m now calling on you to exercise that level of sensitivity, Virgo. There’s a situation in the early stages of unfolding that would ultimately emanate a big stink if you allowed it to keep developing. There is a second unripe situation, on the other hand, that would eventually yield fragrant blooms. I advise you to either quash or escape from the first, even as you cultivate and treasure the second.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21): I understand the appeal of the f-word. It’s guttural and expulsive. It’s a perverse form of celebration that frees speakers from their inhibitions. But I’m here today to announce that its rebel cachet and vulgar power are extinct. It has decayed into a barren cliche. Its official death-fromoversaturation occurred with the release of the mainstream Hollywood blockbuster “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Actors in the film spat out the rhymes-with-cluck word more than 500 times. I hereby nominate you Sagittarians to begin the quest for new ways to invoke rebellious irreverence. What interesting mischief and naughty wordplay might you perpetrate to escape your inhibitions, break taboos that need to be broken, and call other people on their BS and hypocrisy?

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19): German philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) has had a major impact on the development of ideas in the Western world. We can reasonably divide the history of philosophy into two eras: pre-Kantian and post-Kantian. And yet for his whole life, which lasted 79 years, this big thinker never traveled more than ten miles away from Konigsberg, the city where he was born. He followed a precise and methodical routine, attending to his work with meticulous detail. According to my analysis, you Capricorns could have a similar experience in the coming weeks. By sticking close to the triedand-true rhythms that keep you grounded and healthy, you can generate influential wonders. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): The Aquarian author Georges Simenon (1903-1989) wrote more than 200 novels under his own name and 300 more under pseudonyms. On average, he finished a new book every 11 days. Half a billion copies of his books are in print. I’m sorry to report that I don’t think you will ever be as prolific in your own chosen field as he was in his. However, your productivity could soar to a hefty fraction of Simenon-like levels in 2014 — if you’re willing to work your ass off. Your luxuriant fruitfulness won’t come as easily as his seemed to. But you should be overjoyed that you at least have the potential to be luxuriantly fruitful. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): When I’m older and wiser, maybe I’ll understand the meaning of my life. When I’m older and wiser, maybe I’ll gain some insight about why I’m so excited to be alive despite the fact that my destiny is so utterly mysterious. What about you, Pisces? What will be different for you when you’re older and wiser? Now is an excellent time to ponder this riddle. Why? Because it’s likely you will get a glimpse of the person you will have become when you are older and wiser — which will in turn intensify your motivation to become that person.
